Messenger Publications

Welcome to our Autumn 2019 Catalogue Dear Reader, We hope that you got to read and enjoy some of our Spring books. We have had several reports of successful dinners cooked using Saintly Feasts! Our autumn 2019 list is particularly strong on pastoral resources. We are excited to be publishing Kieran O’Mahony OSA, whose homily notes are so popular amongst Irish clergy. We are beginning his Hearers of the Word series with Advent and Christmas. Aidan Ryan’s fascinating book on the Irish Church, Pastoral Ministry in Changing Times, is based on his articles in The Furrow. Gavin Murphy writes from personal experience of struggling with mental health issues in Bursting out in Praise: Spirituality and Mental Health. Jack Mahoney SJ, a widely published and distinguished writer and theologian, has written in Glimpses of the Gospel, a very accessible set of reflections which will give every reader food for thought and a better appreciation of the Gospels. Mary in Different Traditions is intended to help contemporary readers better understand the mother of God by looking at the ways in which she is appreciated in other religions and denominations. A Simple Life-Changing Prayer shows us how to make the examen a part of our daily lives. Then we have perennial favourites like Fr Martin Hogan’s commentaries on the weekday readings, The Word of God is Living and Active, and of course our most popular publication, Sacred Space: The Prayerbook 2020. Two new books celebrate the season of Advent – Sacred Space: Advent & Christmas 2019-20, and Dipping into Advent by very popular author, Fr Alan Hilliard. Finally, and a bit out of season, we have Contemplating the Camino by Brendan McManus SJ which is a practical and spiritual guide for you to peruse by the fire as you plan a trip for the Spring! We all hope you will enjoy our autumn titles. Do let us know which you have found most enjoyable – we love getting feedback. And if you would like to hear from us more often, please sign up for our monthly emails at www.messenger.ie. Cecilia West Publisher P.S. We have just signed up Dublin priest, Michael Collins, to write a book on Cardinal Newman whose beatification will take place on 13 October. Newman: A Short Biography will be rushed through to appear in September.

Newman: A Short Biography Michael Collins

John Henry Newman was an important and controversial figure in the religious history of England in the 19th century. An esteemed academic, prolific author and convert from the Church of England to Catholicism, Newman was a complex and conflicted individual. Intensely loyal to his friends, highly-strung, kind-hearted and tenacious, Newman combined the best of both the Anglican and Catholic traditions. His volume of lectures entitled The Idea of a University, explained his philosophy of education. During the four years he spent in Dublin he was instrumental in the founding of the Catholic University of Ireland in 1854; this later evolved into University College Dublin, now the largest university in Ireland. John Henry Newman will be declared a saint on 13th October 2019.

Pastoral Ministry in Changing Times

The Past, Present & Future of the Catholic Church in Ireland Aidan Ryan Foreword by Bishop Colm O’Reilly

An examination of the ecclesial change in Ireland that the author suggests is mainly a result of social and economic change and of the vastly increased influence of the media, both mainstream and social. Reflecting on the factors that have caused the change, he considers the sacramental life of the Church and the present state of liturgy in Ireland. He explores the different ways of being Catholic in a parish context and discusses clergy morale, what nourishes it and what damages it. The book concludes with possible ways of renewal for the future.

Mary in Different Traditions

Seeing the Mother of Jesus with New Eyes

Currently Dean of Philosophy at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, Thomas G Casey SJ is an author on several books in the areas of spirituality and culture. He spent ten years on the teaching staff of the Gregorian University in Rome.

Catholicism in the Western world today demands real effort to turn to Our Lady in any meaningful way. The author explores the insights of other faiths — Protestantism, Orthodoxy, Islam, and Judaism; and also the insights of the ‘other’ within the Catholic tradition — the Eastern-rite Catholics who, despite their full communion with Rome, have a distinct approach to Mary based on their unique liturgical and spiritual tradition. Perhaps the novelty of their viewpoints on Mary can bring us to the joy of surprise about her once again, and help us to enjoy the even greater wonder of her son, Jesus.

Glimpses of the Gospel

Theological, Spiritual & Practical Reflections Jack Mahoney SJ

NEW BOOKS

9781788120234 Paperback 144pp 210 x 140mm

How well do you know the Gospels? Who was the man who ran naked from the garden of Gethsemane? What did Peter and Jesus talk about when Jesus appeared to him after the resurrection? For Jack Mahoney, the Gospels are a patchwork quilt presenting the ‘nuclear truth’ of Jesus’ resurrection. In Glimpses of the Gospel he makes accessible to the reader the patchwork unity of the Gospel story; tracing major themes, parables and moments across the Gospels, analysing what changes from gospel to gospel, and showing how the differences between gospel accounts can shed valuable light on the enduring questions of Christians.

Hearers of the Word

Praying and exploring the readings for Advent and Christmas, Year A

Kieran J O’Mahony OSA is an Augustinian friar and biblical scholar. He lives in St John’s Priory, Dublin and he works for Dublin Archdiocese as coordinator of biblical studies.

The growing hunger for the Word of God is an unexpected development in our time. This book sets out to nourish those who desire something deeper and richer than is possible in the usual setting of worship. By exploring the context and background to all three readings for each day of the season, the author hopes to make the readings available for personal prayer and as a preparation for taking part in the Sunday liturgy. This book is a very useful resource for all who wish to get more out of the season’s readings. Kieran is very well-known for his hugely popular ‘Weekly Notes’ – an email resource for each week’s readings throughout the year.

Reflections on the weekday readings for the liturgical year 2019-2020 Martin Hogan

NEW BOOKS

9781788120975 Paperback 280pp 210 x 140mm J473

Many people feel drawn to basing their prayer on the Scriptures, in particular the gospels. These short reflections attempt to listen to the gospel text on its own terms while showing how it can continue to speak to our church and our world today. The book will appeal to priests in parishes who may wish to prepare a short homily for the weekday Mass, as well as to parishioners who wish to prayerfully reflect on the weekday gospel readings and Lectio Divina groups in parishes. The calendar of the book helps the busy presider, as the reflections are linked to the readings by calendar date rather than the church calendar.

Martin Hogan is a priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin. He has lectured in New Testament Studies in Mater Dei Institute of Education. He has previously published three books of reflections on the Sunday gospel readings for the liturgical years of Mark, Matthew and Luke.

A Simple Life-Changing Prayer

Jim Manney is a popular writer on Ignatian topics as well as the editor of many books on Ignatian spirituality, including What Is Ignatian Spirituality?. He blogs at dotMagis.

People can sometimes experience prayer as formal, dry, and repetitious. But what might happen if you discovered a simple prayer that changed all that? In A Simple, Life-Changing Prayer, Jim Manney introduces Christians to a 500-year-old form of prayer that dramatically altered his perception of prayer and the way he prayed. The prayer is the examen, which St Ignatius Loyola developed for the purpose of nurturing a reflective habit of mind that is constantly attuned to God’s presence. What makes the examen so powerful is its capacity to leads us into a relationship with a God who desires to be personally caught up in the lives of those whom he created.

Dipping into Advent

Reflections for Advent & Christmas Alan Hilliard

Alan Hilliard is keen that people feel they can still connect with their God; he has written these reflections on faith and spirituality to show that God is a loving, supportive and ever-present reality. His style is accessible to regular faith practitioners, as well as to those who may have a remote interest in matters of faith. The reflections, complemented by Fr Alan’s own photographs, vary in length allowing the reader to absorb a short reflection or, if they prefer, ‘dip’ into a deeper, longer one. An ideal book to keep beside your bed or where people can pick it up and read awhile.

Bursting Out in Praise Spirituality & Mental Health Gavin Thomas Murphy

The author draws on his own hard-earned wisdom for this series of reflections on spirituality and mental health. He covers a range of experiences including: upsides, downsides, recovery, balance, loving life and spirituality. This is a gentle introduction to spirituality and mental health. Bringing together wisdom from psychology and spirituality, the author’s reallife examples show that there is no dividing line between mental illness and normality. Ignatian Spirituality is a consistent thread throughout that offers a psycho-spirituality of great depth and awareness. Everyone is somewhere along the mental health continuum and God is with them every step of the way.

A wonderful collection of delicious recipes, originally prepared as the main Sunday meal at the Jesuit house, ‘Manresa’, in Birmingham. Each recipe is accompanied by a saint with a (sometimes tenuous) connection to the ingredients or the dish itself. A brief life of each saint gives the book a very special dimension. Two Irish women living in Birmingham wanted to give something back to the Jesuits. They decided a way to do so was to cook Sunday dinner for them, and they continued to do this for twentytwo years. Now in their 90s and 70s respectively, they have brought their years of Sunday cooking ideas together in this very special collection. All royalties to the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS).

Adaptability is the hallmark of the Jesuit charism. From early on, they spread rapidly: to the Far East, to North and South America, to Africa and eventually to Australasia. This little volume tells the stories of a few of these Jesuits, from different continents and eras — their successes and failures, their frustrations and hopes — in the hope that their commitment and struggles will prove inspirational once again today. Sharing the Wisdom of Time

By Pope Francis and Friends

This book was specially commissioned by Pope Francis. Guided by the conviction that in order to “walk toward the future, the past is needed”, the Holy Father invited older people from around the globe to share their experience of love, loss, hope, peace and faith. The resultant book shares the wisdom of elders in our communities with young people today. In Sharing the Wisdom of Time the lessons learned by older generations become a gift to the young, empowering them to step into the world of tomorrow. The book contains Pope Francis’ interactions with elder people from every corner of the globe — Latin America, the Far East, USA, Africa, Europe, Ireland and the UK. It is illustrated with stunning photographic portraits taken by National Geographic photographer Paul Audia. MP Autumn 2018 | 25
