Highlights of our autumn list include a new Father Browne collection of photographs, Wandering Wicklow with Father Browne, with a fascinating introduction by Robert O’Byrne. As usual we have our three Sacred Space titles, perennial bestsellers all. We are proud to have been invited to publish a beautiful volume to celebrate 225 years of St Patrick’s College, We Remember Maynooth. Jesuit theologian, Brian O’Leary SJ, brings together a lifetime of work in To Love and To Serve. Other Ignatian titles include a really accessible introduction to Ignatian spirituality, Pathways to a Decision, by Jim Maher SJ, and an essential guide to The Art of Spiritual Direction by Jos Moons SJ. Fr Michael Hurley has worked for many years in the cell church movement and Inspiring Faith Communities is based on his experience. We have our tried and tested resources for the new liturgical year, Hearers of the Word by Kieran O’Mahony OSA and You Have the Words of Eternal Life by Fr Martin Hogan. Fr John Cullen brings us a really fresh and different collection of Advent reflections in Alert, Aware, Attentive. Last but certainly not least we have Catherine McCann’s inspiring reflections on Spirituality and the Senses.

The Wisdom of Laudato Si’

Paperback

Dermot A. Lane

176pp

This book builds bridges between theology and ecology. It challenges theology to re-imagine who we are, who the Spirit is, who Christ is, where creation is going, and what the role of liturgy is in society – all in the glare of the climate crisis. Up to now climate change was left to scientists, politicians, and activists. It is now time for religion to enter the debate. Climate change is not just one more problem to be addressed; it is the major challenge facing humanity in the 21st century. This thought-provoking text will be of interest to activists, policymakers, educators, priests, and theologians.

Dermot A Lane is a priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin and former President of Mater Dei Institute of Education, Dublin City University. His publications include The Experience of God, Keeping Hope Alive, and Stepping Stones to Other Religions.

Robert O’Byrne is a writer and lecturer specialising in the fine and decorative arts in Ireland, and the author of more than a dozen books, among them Luggala: The Story of a Guinness House and Romantic Irish Homes. A former Vice-President of the Irish Georgian Society, he is currently a trustee of the Apollo Foundation and the Artists Collecting Society.

Wandering Wicklow with Father Browne Edited by Robert O’Byrne

Father Browne is well-known for his collection of Titanic photographs. He spent much of his life taking photographs all around Ireland and beyond. He made frequent trips to Wicklow where he photographed the landscape and people. Robert O’Byrne, well known commentator on Irish art, architecture and artefacts, has selected the best of these photographs and arranged them as a grand tour of the Garden of Ireland. Robert’s introduction brings to life this extraordinary Jesuit, often referred to as Ireland’s greatest photographer. Those with Wicklow connections, as well as visitors, will enjoy these wonderful images of a time past and the people and places as they looked in the first half of the twentieth century. Hatshops, train platforms, mountain scenery, sea views are just some of the subjects covered in this gorgeous, nostalgic collection. An ideal Christmas gift! MP Autumn 2020 | 9

We Remember Maynooth A College Across Four Centuries

Edited by Salvador Ryan and J P Sheridan

9781788122634

The Art of Spiritual Direction A Guide to Ignatian Practice Jos Moons SJ

This is a concrete, practical book about spiritual accompaniment. It resembles a toolbox with a user’s manual. In six chapters, the author presents the following tools: ‘there is no rush’, ‘listening by following’, ‘searching for the soul’, ‘going deeper’, ‘evaluating’, and ‘accompanying towards spiritual maturity’. By means of examples and case studies, he demonstrates how these tools may be used to good effect. Two introductory chapters discuss the choice for a practice-oriented book and the core values of an Ignatian approach to spiritual accompaniment. A final chapter specifically focuses on vocational discernment. New spiritual directors can learn from this book the tricks of the trade and experienced directors can be encouraged to reflect upon their own practice. Although it is written from a Roman Catholic, Jesuit background, this book may be used in a wider variety of Christian contexts. 10 | MP Autumn 2020

Jos Moons is a Dutch Jesuit priest living and working in Belgium. He has always combined pastoral and academic work. Currently he combines chaplaincy work for the University Parish and lecturing at the KU Leuven with a research position at Tilburg University. In addition, he supervises spiritual directors in formation.

Salvador Ryan is professor of Ecclesiastical History at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and has published widely on popular religious culture from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. John-Paul Sheridan is a priest of the Diocese of Ferns. He joined the staff at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth as Education Programmes Coordinator and currently lectures in Religious Education and Catechesis, Liturgy and Children and Systematic Theology.

Founded in 1795, Maynooth College has a singular place in the history of the Irish Church, and indeed the Catholic Church globally. It has been the subject of riots in the streets of London and has played host to kings and popes. The Maynooth buildings have created one of the loveliest of university campuses and its chapel is among the highest freestanding structures in Ireland. It expanded rapidly, becoming a Pontifical University, a constituent college of the National University of Ireland and, at one time, the largest seminary in the world. It has educated many thousands of students and led the way in many branches of the arts and sciences. This book is a compilation of pen pictures – personal reminiscences and sketches on aspects of the college’s life and history. The contributors have all been associated with Maynooth in many different spheres. These pages are part history, part folk history, part aide-mémoire. The book will open up this historic centre of learning and tell the tales of those who walked its Pugin-designed buildings. MP Autumn 2020 | 11

Pathways to a Decision with Ignatius of Loyola Jim Maher SJ

Since Fr Jorge Bergoglio SJ became Pope, many people have wondered what Jesuits are. Are they Catholics? How are they different to other religious orders? Ignatius of Loyola, the co-founder of the Jesuits, developed a spirituality which has helped countless numbers of people since the sixteenth century. This book presents some of Ignatius’ key insights which inspire Jesuits and others all over the world. For those associated with the Jesuits or those who want to find out more about their spirituality, this basic introduction will be helpful. Ignatius emphasises how God is always close to us. God speaks individually to us through our feelings, desires, thoughts and actions in unexpected places and at unexpected times. Ignatius gives us the tools to identify God’s presence and to make good decisions to welcome God into our lives through the ordinary daily routine. 12 | MP Autumn 2020

£11.95 Jim Maher SJ has spent most of his Jesuit life ministering at Crescent College Comprehensive SJ as a teacher of English and R.E. He managed the 5th Year Social Outreach Programme and led 6th Year pilgrimage retreats for over thirty years. Since his retirement from the classroom he continues to provide pastoral support at Crescent College Comprehensive.

Michael Hurley is a priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin and has had seven very varied diocesan appointments. In 2013, as part of a team, he was asked to lead seminars on the formation of parish cells for the priests of the diocese of Masaka, Uganda. He has also been invited to speak or lead events in Malta, England, Scotland and Florida, USA.

Inspiring Faith Communities A Programme of Evangelisation Michael Hurley

In an easy to read style, this book presents a programme of evangelisation that helps individuals, communities and parishes to explore together how they can live life more fully and with authentic freedom. Inspiring Faith Communitites will be of interest to those involved in the cell church movement. This step-by-step programme of evangelisation is guided by the author’s three convictions, namely that God invites us all to know him personally, that we as Christians are called to reach out and proclaim the goodness of God and that the parish is an important entity in the renewal of God’s people as a dwelling place of God among them.

To Love and To Serve: Selected Essays

Exploring the Ignatian Tradition Brian O’Leary SJ

Brian O’Leary, an Irish Jesuit, has been researching and writing on Ignatian spirituality since the 1970s. His new offering, To Love and To Serve, is a selection of essays that have appeared in spirituality journals in a number of countries. The essays vary considerably in content, purpose, and style. Some are short and aimed at a popular readership, others are more academic or written with practitioners of Ignatian spirituality in mind. All are eminently readable and display great clarity of style. Ignatian spirituality is most commonly associated with the Spiritual Exercises. Consequently these figure largely in O’Leary’s writings. There are also a number of pieces on the Jesuit Constitutions – frequently quoted today in the context of spiritual formation and of leadership. And then there is spiritual direction – is there a specifically Ignatian model of this ministry? There are also intriguing questions around the mysticism of St Ignatius Loyola himself, and what it might look like if lived out in the post-modern world? The range of topics is remarkable.

Sacred Space for Lent 2021 The Sacred Space website, an inspiration of the Irish Jesuits, continues to be one of the most popular prayer sites worldwide. Twenty years ago a group of Jesuits saw the potential of the internet as a way of helping and encouraging people to pray. The books followed soon after and have been consistent bestsellers. Sacred Space Lent 2021 continues the tradition of Scripture reading, points of reflection, a weekly topic and six steps of prayer and meditation. The handy format makes this an ideal book for pocket, brief case, handbag or even the glove compartment of the car!

Martin Hogan is a priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin. He is presently co-Parish Priest of Saint John the Baptist parish in Clontarf, Dublin. He has recently retired from lecturing in New Testament Studies in Mater Dei Institute of Education. He has previously published four books of reflections on the Sunday gospel readings for the liturgical year.

Many people feel drawn to basing their prayer on the Scriptures, in particular the gospels. These short reflections attempt to listen to the gospel text on its own terms while showing how it can continue to speak to our church and our world today. The book will appeal to priests in parishes who may wish to prepare a short homily for the weekday Mass, to parishioners who wish to prayerfully reflect on the weekday gospel readings, as well as to Lectio Divina groups in parishes. The calendar of the book helps the busy presider, as the reflections are linked to the readings by calendar date rather than the church calendar.

Catherine McCann is the curator of the Shekina Sculpture Garden in County Wicklow. She is a retired physiotherapist, and formerly a religious. She studied theology in Rome during the Second Vatican Council and has a Master’s degree in theology. Later, she completed a doctorate based on the experiences of visitors to the Shekina Sculpture Garden.

Spirituality and the Senses

Living Life to the Full Catherine McCann

Many of us are largely unaware of the rich role our five senses – hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste – can play in enriching both our everyday and our spiritual lives. St Ignatius encouraged us to use the senses to relive the Gospel, and for St Augustine sight and hearing were the conduits of his garden-side conversion. In Spirituality and the Senses Catherine McCann guides the reader on a journey of increasing awareness. We move from attention to the ‘outer’ senses that connect us to the world, to an awareness of the ‘inner’ senses that connect us to our deeper selves and our spirituality. Based on her experience working with visitors to the Shekina Sculpture Garden in County Wicklow, Catherine explains how, through attention to our everyday sensory experiences, we can create a space for reflection and spiritual enrichment in our lives. Alert, Aware, Attentive Advent Reflections John Cullen

We often find it hard to believe that we have a unique voice. Advent begins with a voice crying in the wilderness. Every voice matters – especially voices in the wilderness that are stifled and silenced by alienation and apathy. This book dares you to take the time to listen to Advent voices in the wilderness that persist with calls to be heard and respected. December is a month when we fill the winter days and nights with a new busyness. This book is a chance to pause, catch our breath. It is a fingertip on the pulse to appreciate our every breath and heartbeat as a gift. It is a chance for the reader to connect with God’s word during Advent – cradling a word, a phrase or an image that whispers hope into some parched place in our lives – a place of dry bones (Ezekiel 37:1-14). This is where God’s patient dialogue waits for our response. 20 | MP Autumn 2020

Raphael’s World

Michael Collins

Raphael Sanzio of Urbino (1483–1520) was one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance. Michael Collins’ biography, Raphael’s World – a large format illustrated book – portrays the era in which the painter lived. Born thirty years after the invention of the printing press and nine years before the discovery of the New World, Raphael harnessed the new techniques of printing and the riches which flowed from the Americas into Europe in the early sixteenth century.
