Although born into humble beginnings, Pierre Favre would, along with Ignatius Loyola and Francis Xavier, form the nucleus of what became the Jesuit Order (1540). Favre was the first to be ordained (1534) among this group.

From 1539 onwards, Pierre Favre travelled extensively, lecturing in Spain, attending theological diets (meetings) in Germany, and in Louvain in the then Spanish Netherlands and the royal courts of Portugal and Spain. From Spain, he was summoned to attend the Council of Trent only to die in Rome (1546) before he ever arrived in Trent.

Pierre Favre had a special gift for friendship with all types of people, from kings and cardinals to paupers. St Ignatius Loyola held him in high esteem and famously said of Favre that he was the most gifted among the early companions at giving the Spiritual Exercises. Favre was a gentle, sensitive, often diffident character. He sometimes doubted his own gifts as a preacher yet he was especially noted for his talents in spiritual direction and in the confessional.

and about the religious crises at the time of the early Counter-Reformation.

Brendan Comerford SJ has qualifications in philosophy, theology and spirituality. A former Jesuit novice director and spiritual director, he is now coordinator of St Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, Dublin, while also lecturing on Christian mysticism. He is the author of three previous books: The Pilgrim’s Story (2017); Disciples of Courage (2022) and The Great Dreamer (2024).

Maynooth College Reflects on Catechesis in the Life of the Church, edited by Jeremy Corley, Andrew Meszaros, and John-Paul Sheridan, is an anthology of diverse reflections on some of the current challenges for catechesis, divided into four sections. The first part, ‘The Catechetical Task’, considers wider aspects of catechesis, including insights from the psychology of human development, the mission of the catechist and the major resources at hand for the catechist. The theme of part two is ‘Bringing Catechesis Alive’ and has both theoretical and practical chapters on animating the gospel message to touch hearts and spark imagination. Part three, ‘The Good News in Catechesis’, discusses the Church’s social teaching, theological anthropology as well as contemporary lessons for catechists from St Augustine. Finally part four, ‘Spirituality of Catechesis’, focuses on prayer and the Scriptures as nourishment for the catechetical task.

Dedicated to reflecting on how all the faithful can more effectively participate in the catechetical endeavour, this volume is an ideal resource for both commissioned catechists and parish volunteers, as well as teachers, priests, parents transmitting the faith to children or those seeking to witness to the faith in the workplace.

Jeremy Corley, Andrew Meszaros, and JohnPaul Sheridan are faculty members at Maynooth Pontifical University.

The Final Document of the Synod on Synodality (2021–2024) was agreed using a method some describe as the most expansive conversation in the history of the Church to date. Neither dialogue nor debate, neither democratic nor authoritarian, conversation in the Spirit encourages us to come together, recognising that the Spirit speaks in and through us all. As old as the Church itself, conversation in the Spirit was practised by St Augustine and St Ignatius of Loyola made it the basis for the Society of Jesus. It can inform decision-making at every level, from parish through to the local, regional and even universal Church.

In Conversation in the Spirit: A Guide to the Synodal Method, authors Juan A. Guerrero Alves SJ & Óscar Martín López SJ draw together the contributions of Augustine, Cassian and Ignatius, the formal documents of the synod, and practical examples of conversation in the Spirit in action. Working with Austen Ivereigh, Alves and López have prepared this revised English-language edition of a soon-to-be classic guide to synodality and discernment.

Juan Antonio Guerrero Alves SJ is director of the St Ignatius Spirituality Centre in Salamanca. He was prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy of the Holy See from 2019–2022.

Óscar Martín López SJ is currently vice-rector of the Jesuit University of Paraguay, director of the reflection and dialogue journal Acción, and a member of the national Paraguayan synodal team.

Austen Ivereigh is UK-based writer, journalist and commentator best known for his books on and with Pope Francis. He is fellow in Contemporary Church History at Campion Hall, Oxford.

Twenty years ago, Brendan McManus SJ suffered the most devastating blow that can befall a family, when he lost his brother Donal to suicide. Following the shock, Brendan started to write and speak extensively about his grief journey and the support structures he found valuable in guiding him towards finding peace and direction in his life. He wrote Redemption Road about walking the Camino de Compostela in honour of his deceased brother. He subsequently wrote Surviving Suicide Bereavement where he offered advice on the complex suicide grief process and what he personally found helpful for survival, adaptation and thriving. This book struck a chord in today’s tumultuous times, with many readers finding support and comfort in the text and the book became a bestseller, but has been out of print.

Now, on the twentieth anniversary of his brother’s death, Brendan has written this revised edition of the popular book, with additional reflection points and a linking of the grief recovery process to the help and guidance available in

Brendan McManus SJ is a Jesuit priest and currently works as a spiritual director and retreat giver. He has published a number of books, some on the Camino and others on Ignatian spirituality. With Jim Deeds, he co-authored the awardwinning Finding God in the Mess trilogy. His most recent title, co-authored with Katherine O’Flynn FCJ, is Living the Camino Back Home (2024).

We all get older as time goes by; aging is inevitable. On the journey we will face challenges, sorrow and loneliness, but we will also experience happiness, find love and live out the different joys of youth, adulthood and old age

In Dancing with Time, José Maria Rodríguez writes of the journey from youth to maturity. Taken together the stages of life can be understood as a dance with time. By listening to the music and following our feet, we can learn to live in harmony with others, deal with failure and talk to our past and future selves.

Drawing on Ignatian spirituality, Oliazola offers an antidote to today’s polarised, youth-obsessed culture. He shows us how to embrace our own unique life story, endure the challenges that confront us on the way, learn to dialogue with others and most of all never stop dancing with ourselves, the world, and God. Time is music. Life is the dance.

Dipping Into Hope An Anchor in Stormy Waters

9781788127219

Paperback

96pp

210 x 140mm

€14.95

£12.95

Inspired by his ministry in a Dublin city centre parish and his time spent overseas with people from different cultures and creeds, author Fr Alan Hilliard has written forty reflections rooted in an outlook of hope, entitled Dipping Into Hope: An Anchor in Stormy Waters. Hilliard believes that hope isn’t just an aspiration or a distant reality, but can be found in the present moment, in the ‘bits and pieces of everyday life’ as the poet Patrick Kavanagh put it.

Each reflection tells a succinct story using often recognisable situations taken from everyday life. Although the word ‘hope’ does not appear in every reflection, it is implicitly referenced in the wisdom drawn from the circumstances and conclusions.

Each of the forty reflections are accompanied by photos taken by the author. This book is an ideal companion for pilgrims of hope as we progress through this Jubilee Year.

‘a book to buy, to read…to ponder in the quiet of approaching night.’

The Irish Catholic

Alan Hilliard was director of the Irish Bishops’ Commission for Emigrants and the Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas and led campaigns to highlight the plight of forgotten or undocumented Irish in Britain and the USA. He was coordinator of the Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy Service at TU Dublin and now works in parish ministry in Dublin city. The People’s Celebration of the Eucharist

What are we to understand by ‘the people’s participation’ and ‘the people’s celebration’? What is it that we mean by ‘people’? What does it mean when the presider speaks of preparing to celebrate ‘the sacred mysteries’? This book is about the changes introduced by the Second Vatican Council, why they were made, and their implications, but also about the limitations of their effectiveness that emerge when the role of the faithful is considered in depth.
