Suffolk’s Supervisors Convene in Hauppauge in 250th Tree Planting

With less than two months to go until the historic 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, all ten towns in Suffolk pitched in on Friday in Hauppauge to “plant it forward.”

The County has encouraged residents to take free red oak saplings from various County parks to be planted anywhere in Suffolk. Each tree will be documented with the County Clerk’s office and each planter will receive a plaque as a commemoration.

The supervisors of Suffolk’s ten towns brought soil from their respective municipalities. Each bag of soil coated the trunk of a cherry blossom tree, each forming a semi-circle around the existing Freedom Plaza.

Additionally, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine (R-Center Moriches) planted a separate tree, while Presiding Officer Anthony Piccirillo (R-Holtsville) planted a tree along with Legislators Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset), Steve Flotteron (R-Brightwaters), and Ann Welker (D-North Sea).

Lake Ronkonkoma Fireworks Show Cancelled After months of planning and debate within the community, the fireworks show for May 30 over Lake Ronkonkoma has been cancelled.

Sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator Trish Bergin (R-East Islip), the show was originally slated for Memorial Day Weekend to revive the age-old tradition of fireworks over Long Island’s largest freshwater lake.

However, the community pushed back against the show. Veterans said that Memorial Day Weekend is a somber occasion not typically celebrated with fireworks, while the greater community gave concern to chemical contamination of the water from the fireworks and disruption of nearby eagles’ nests.

The cancellation ultimately came down to Islip Town Code 37-58(B), which prohibits motorboats and propeller-driven vessels on Lake Ronkonkoma. The Lake bottom is owned by the Town of Islip. The fireworks barge, which was set to be launched and operated by Fireworks by Grucci, would not be permitted on the Lake. The Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum was also one of the organizers for the “Salute to Our Fallen” event.

“From the beginning, our goal was simple: honor our fallen heroes, support the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum, and unite our community in

However, Bergin countered that Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter’s (R-West Islip) “interpretation” of the Town Code “could now jeopardize” the Lake Keeper Program, a position created by the County for a specialist to study and remediate the Lake’s quality, as that program, according to Bergin, “regularly uses a motorboat to monitor and study the Lake.”

“In addition, the Suffolk County Marine Dive Team operates a motorboat during its dive training exercises.

Inconsistent application of this code raises serious questions about fairness and selective enforcement,” said Bergin.

Romaine, a former history teacher, briefly described the history of the county. Southold, founded in 1640, was the first town in Suffolk to be established. Later that year, Southampton would be established. East Hampton followed in 1648, Huntington in 1653, Islip in 1683, Brookhaven in 1686, Shelter Island in 1730, and Smithtown in 1788. Riverhead would split from the Town of Southold in 1792, and Babylon would split from Huntington almost a century later in 1872.

“We are very proud of all the towns and 32 villages in this county,” said Romaine, adding that Suffolk County is one of four in the state that have never been subdivided. “These trees represent each of our towns that are united with the County. We work as a team, we work together to benefit the people of Suffolk County.

We have two different governmental structures, but we are united in our vision and our commitment to the future of this county and the people who live here.”

Presiding Officer Piccirillo said that the working relationship between the Legislature and the County has “never been better,” owing much of that to the leadership of Romaine.

“We’ve been able to do a tremendous amount of work through our budget process and our general meetings to make sure that we’re moving Suffolk in the right direction,” said Piccirillo. “I look forward to our continued work together.”

Suffolk County Clerk Vincent Puleo (R-Nesconset) rang the ceremonial bell to welcome each planter to their cherry tree.

“I carry with me today the rich soil from the great Town of Brookhaven on behalf of all the elected officials and the 500,000 residents who make up the biggest town in New York State geographically, second by population,” said Brookhaven Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Center Moriches) (1st picture). “I hope this soil will nourish this tree and we appreciate our partnership with the county and all of the other towns so very much.”

Immigration Enforcement Isn’t the Problem.

Lack of Local Cooperation Is. Some people are still unaware that the president who deported the most people in the history of this country, during his entire tenure, was Barack Obama (D-IL), who deported almost 3 million people over his eight years in office.

Donald Trump (R-FL), on the other hand, deported about 1.5 million people during his first term, and while numbers are still being crunched for his second term thus far, the general consensus is that about 1 million have been deported.

The DHS reported over 605,000 deportations for 2025 alone.

Immigration was a central campaign theme in 2016, as it was in 2024. Before Trump’s ratings took a complete and total nosedive recently, immigration was one of the only aspects of his administration where he remained net-positive among Americans.

Immigration enforcement has obviously been a contentious subject since Trump returned to Washington, but it was an undeniable choke point for Joe Biden (D-DE) as well, and would later be a significant albatross around Kamala Harris’ (D-CA) neck in 2024. While the Trump Administration has been far from perfect in their execution, recruitment, and training, the picture would likely be much less chaotic if Democrats hadn’t laid down such a bipartisan principle to primarily be opposition for the sake of itself.

But why was 2016 the turning point, what made Democrats abandon their years-long philosophy of a strong border and enforcement of immigration laws, and why does the crisis seem evermore out-of-control?

When Trump came down the escalator in 2015, he immediately generated headlines from a brash speech that many to this day still align with his entire character on immigration. Many of those same journalists who wrote those headlines and the activists who parroted them conveniently forgot that the “kids in cages” controversy was a leftover PR disaster from the Obama Administration.

They also had never clearly watched a State of the Union Speech from President Obama or Bill Clinton (D-AR). Their prerogatives on immigration would make you think they were Trump voters in 2016. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-Park Slope) is no exception either, and his caucus-leading position in the Senate was seriously complicated by his pivot to a party-line standard solely for political expediency.

We think Democrats overplayed their hand in 2016 hoping that Trump would just be a passing phase that the history books would forget. They could gin up the emotional aspect of the campaign for Hillary Clinton (D-NY), who would likely not have made such a spectacle of the issue. What her actual policy would have been is anyone’s guess, but we wonder if she would have embraced the Obama-era levels of action.

What’s more important to note is that state- and local-level cooperation was and is tantamount to an effective immigration platform, especially when it comes to detention, prosecution, and/or deportation.

In the eleventh-hour budget votes, Albany Democrats pushed through a provision to limit federal agreements under the federal 287(g) program. That one allows Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deputize state and local law enforcement officers to carry out immigration duties.

The move effectively strengthens New York’s sanctuary laws, which is at the very bottom of the list of what this state needs. In fact, repealing the sanctuary laws is one of the most important actions New York needs.

Democrats also dealt themselves a hand by declaring sanctuary status and then playing coy when Biden’s border policies were clearly disastrous. Redstate governors who bear the brunt of the crisis gladly sent the migrants to New York and other blue bastions, which only made leaders cry about lack of resources and being swamped with people they didn’t request.

Governor Kathy Hochul (D-Hamburg) and company were no exception, and the State has spent over $5 billion combatting the migrant crisis in 2024.

Why would our elected governor and representatives dig the Empire State in further by expanding the sanctuary? We wish we knew the answer, but any answer we give could be purely speculative. Our conversations with Albany insiders this week say Democrats are on edge from the violence in Minnesota, except that state also prevented state and local authorities from cooperating with ICE. It’s amazing how Obama deported millions more than Trump has and no one batted an eye, and Democrats and Republicans were able to agree that immigration enforcement was a bipartisan necessity.

Now, Democrats clutch their pearls and say that only those who commit truly heinous crimes should be targeted for deportation. We agree that they should be prioritized, but entering the country illegally is a crime in and of itself. That’s why it’s called “illegal immigration.” Is every country on Earth allowed to have borders and laws except the U.S.?

But to their point, a Guatemalan national was just arrested two weeks ago with six counts of arson following a year-long arson spree across Long Island. In a different incident, an illegal migrant accused of raping a five-year-old child was released before being detained by ice.

Yes, homegrown crime is still crime, but we can still walk and chew gum.

Albany Democrats clearly can’t or simply won’t. Neither is excusable.

All Politics is Local This week, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine (R-Center Moriches) hosted supervisors of all ten of Suffolk’s towns to the County Center in Hauppauge to take part in a symbolic gesture of unity, conscientiousness of the future, and reverence for the past. All planted their own cherry blossom tree with soil from their own corner of Suffolk.

As this great country careens towards its 250th anniversary, Suffolk officials are cognizant of the precarious state of affairs of today’s world, but remain optimistic having navigated significant episodes together.

It’s also a reminder that all politics is local. Forget what the President is doing and you can disregard more than half of what Congress does - the scrutiny is more in what they don’t do - but look no further than your own Town Hall. That’s where the most substantive changes that affect your daily life pass through.

Moreover, it’s not about partisan politics here. Of the ten towns, five (Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, Shelter Island, and Smithtown) are governed by Republican supervisors and five (Babylon, East Hampton, Riverhead, Southampton, and Southold)

by Democrats. One of them, Babylon, is run by Supervisor Rich Schaffer (D-North Babylon), who also serves as Chair of the Suffolk County Democratic Committee.

Yet Romaine and company were joined by him anyway, as he’s just as much a part of the process here in Suffolk as anyone else.

Supervisors made the long treks from the East End, even a ferry ride from Shelter Island, to take part in the 250-oriented ceremony, but it was also interesting to see all these officials in the same place at the same time. Rarely might some of their paths intersect, but the ceremony, we think, was a reminder that governing a county as large and as complex as Suffolk is like toying with a Rubik’s Cube. One turn affects the other.

Furthermore, your local officials tend not to resemble national politics, as not only are the typical hot-button issues absent, mostly, from local campaign trails, but the hard-fought battles are more merit-based rather than ideological.

Suffolk supervisors and Executive Romaine, along with partners in the Legislature, were able to “plant it forward” for the next generation. On this day, Romaine invoked a well-known Greek proverb: “A society grows great when old men plant trees under whose shade they shall never sit.”

Indeed, we find the ceremony should remind residents to put their attention, not in the national throes of partisan politics, but in the village it takes to raise a child who might just run our country one day.

Progress With Problems

By Assemblyman Doug Smith The New York State Budget is now 57 days late, and while I believe the people of New York deserve an on-time budget, they also deserve a budget that is thoughtful, responsible, and improves upon flawed policies that have contributed to New York’s affordability and public safety challenges.

This year’s budget included several provisions that I proudly supported because they reflect common-sense priorities that will benefit Long Island families, students, taxpayers, veterans, first responders, and local communities.

I supported a record increase in school aid, expanded support for students experiencing homelessness and foster care, additional investments in Universal Pre-K, and the ‘Back to Basics in Math’ initiative focused on evidence-based instruction and stronger foundational learning. As a former mathematics teacher, parent, and Ranking Member of the Assembly Education Committee, I believe we must continue prioritizing educational excellence and student achievement.

I also supported major investments in local roads and infrastructure, clean water projects, volunteer fire departments, libraries, public safety initiatives, Veterans’ services, community colleges, biotechnology innovation, crime labs, and programs that support vulnerable New Yorkers.

Additionally, I supported reforms designed to lower costs for ratepayers and consumers, including utility affordability measures, insurance transparency reforms, and changes that make New York’s climate policies more realistic, achievable, and economically responsible.

However, despite these positive reforms, I strongly opposed the Sanctuary State provisions included in the budget. I do not support policies that restrict cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, weaken local decision-making, create additional bureaucracy, or move New York further in the wrong direction on public safety and immigration enforcement.

At a time when many New Yorkers are deeply concerned about public safety, we should be

Dear Editor, Another school board budget has come and gone and as the largely illegally-planted lawn signs are being collected by the respective special interest groups who supported their slate of Board of Education candidates, the rank-and-file property owner is left once again scratching their head as to what just happened.

First, to see the media outlets talk about the budget vote as if it really determined what would happen to the vast majority of the expenditures in a particular school district is galling. District voters are actually only voting on things that shouldn’t be voted on like sports, transportation, arts and music programs, etc. In most cases, well over three-quarters of the operational expenses (positions, salaries, and benefits of school district employees) can’t be voted on by the very taxpayers they are accountable to!

Second, based upon the last decade of annual school district vote tallies, it appears that the average voter turnout for a Long Island school district hovers around 12%; some are as low as 7%. How can we allow such a small number of voters to determine the outcome of a budget, and who gets to sit on the Board in that district? It is very obvious that the School District employee unions who benefit financially from a passed budget also have a vested interest in the results of both who sit on the board and in the monies approved for expenditure. That is unfair to a community that does not have the spending power of millions of dollars in union political campaign coffers!

Third, why is the public prohibited from dropping in any school they choose unless they have a specific permission to engage in “school business?” That’s right, even though we pay for the education of our school district’s children, no taxpayer is allowed to navigate the hallways of any school building to merely examine how their taxpayer monies are spent! At least I can view my police, courts, and other governmental employees who are paid by my tax dollars, but not the teachers who are literally crafting the future of our country?

The amount of annual NYS public school spending is consistently well above the inflation rate and the highest in our country. Until the NYS Legislature enacts meaningful school choice legislation, the public-school monopoly in NYS (the worst in the U.S. if you look at per-pupil spending versus educational outcomes) needs the following changes made to an out of control spend fest for the 730 public school districts in NYS. 1) All of the budget for a school district should be available for an up or down vote by the taxpayers it serves 2) A quorum of at least 20% of voting property owners should be needed to pass a budget, or the budget fails automatically due to a lack of interest from the community it serves 3) Any property owner in the school district should be allowed to drop in to any school in their district to peruse the actual educational activities taking place before they cast their vote.

A budget should be evaluated item by item, not through blind partisanship. I supported provisions that I believe move New York in the right direction and opposed provisions that I believe weaken public safety, increase bureaucracy, and fail to reflect the concerns of many hardworking taxpayers.

There were meaningful improvements in this year’s budget, and I appreciate the efforts made to achieve some of those reforms, but much more work remains to make New York safer, more affordable, and more accountable to the people we serve.

Where Is Our Congressman?

Dear Editor, The current NY-01 member of Congress ignores the people whom he calls the hard-working average Long Islander. He touts raising the cap on property tax credits and eliminating taxes on tips as his gift to working families in Southold and across New York State.

Meanwhile, the federal government spends money on a war, seizing foreign oil tankers, bombing small boats, adding a new East Wing to the People’s House, even an arch, and now the slush fund of almost $2 billion to people who attacked police and defaced the Capitol of the United States.

Here in Southold, as everywhere else, I presume, the price of a gallon of gasoline is moving toward the six-dollar mark. Our trips to the local grocery store become an adventure as inflation rises to over 3%. We squeezed more cash from the ATM than we did last month or year - while our First District Congressman sits by and takes a Memorial Day break instead of getting a hold of the federal purse strings, the sole purpose of their role as elected officials.

Meanwhile, he silently approves of the cost of an unending war, the removal of a leader of a South American country, the devastation of small outboard-equipped boats, and a slush fund to pay those who attack the police on January 6, 2021.

And now, the Department of Justice just deleted history. They erased from their website the news about the criminal cases related to the events of January 6, 2021, calling it “partisan propaganda” (Newsday, May 24, 2026, page A22).

History is being erased by our federal government, money is being spent to pay those who attack police, funds are used for an arch and a ballroom, while people need relief from higher prices. Where is our Congressman? Who will you vote for?

Why Does Trump Care What His Approval Rating is Abroad?

Dear Editor, During a press briefing outside the White House, President Donald Trump (R-FL) was asked about the ongoing Iran War, the armed conflict White House officials expected to be as swift and decisive as their operation in Venezuela that has now dragged into its second month without much resolution.

Trump added that his approval rating in Israel is at “99%.”

While that figure is exaggerated, it’s not too far off from where the numbers actually are. According to The Jerusalem Post, Trump’s policies are rated as better-than-average by 73% of Israelis, and 49% say he is the best U.S. presidents in history for Israel’s interests.

On the homefront, Trump is hemorrhaging by just about every metric. His own party’s voters have turned on him, he’s got terrible marks on inflation, the economy, and foreign policy, arguably the three biggest reasons people voted for him in a historic coalition. Had Trump delivered on his core promises of “America First,” no new forever-wars in the Middle East, and chasing out waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government, the Democrats probably wouldn’t have won another presidential election for at least a decade.

Yet he brags about his approval rating in a foreign country?

It’s frankly insulting not only to the people who voted for him expecting him to make good on his promises, but also to the people who didn’t vote for him and despise him. He’s just as much their president as he is to those who supported him, and they deserve good representation and good government just as much as any American citizen.

Why do we care what Israel thinks of him, much less any country? Israel didn’t elect him…or did they?

State A curveball was thrown in the New York governor’s race, as Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman (R-Atlantic Beach) received an endorsement from the Governor of Puerto Rico.

Governor Jennifer González-Colón (R-PR) endorsed Blakeman, urging a partnership between the two entities.

“We’re changing the policies here on the island [Puerto Rico]. That’s what we need in New York,” said González-Colón, standing aside Blakeman in Puerto Rico.

There are nearly 6 million Puerto Ricans

living in the mainland U.S. Of those, 1 million call New York State home, and of those, 70% reside in the Big Apple.

A shooter was killed in Washington, D.C., after firing several shots near the White House on Saturday evening. He was fatally shot by the Secret Service and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The shooting took place near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, the northwestern corner of the White House property.

President Trump was in the building at the time of the shooting. Journalists who were in and on the grounds of the White House were quickly ushered into the press briefing room.

A bystander was also struck by gunfire.

Another key official in the second Trump Administration has resigned.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard (R-HI) resigned on Friday after announcing her husband’s diagnosis of bone cancer. She will serve in the role until June 30, at which point Principal Deputy Director Aaron Lukas will assume the post in an acting capacity.

Gabbard is a former Democratic Congresswoman from Hawaii who notably endorsed Trump in 2024 and subsequently registered as a Republican.

That shuffle accompanies another dealing of blows between the Trump Administration and the Republican-led Congress.

In Tuesday’s runoffs, four-term Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) lost the runoff to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R). This makes 2026 the first cycle since 2010 in which more than one incumbent lost renomination in a primary.

Paxton has run as the more MAGAaligned candidate, and has been endorsed

by Trump. Cornyn, bringing up the more establishment wing of the party, was generally seen by insiders as the preferred candidate, as Paxton’s controversies and politics might make for a more competitive race. Democrats haven’t won a Senate race in Texas since 1988.

Also in Texas, long-time Congressman Al Green (D, TX-09) lost his bid to run in another Houston district after his seat was gerrymandered to be handily Republican.

Green, 78, was first elected in 2004, and gained notoriety for being one of Trump’s most vociferous Hill critics in 2016. He was defeated by Congressman Christian Menefee (D, TX-18), 38, who has served since February after winning a special election.

The national redistricting “arms race”

is entering its third act as Southern states move to redraw their maps in light of recent Supreme Court developments and as two states have done about-faces in their stated redistricting plans.

In South Carolina, one of the original contenders for a mid-decade redraw, finally put the plan into action after the Callais decision. However, Republican state senators said that as early voting for the state’s June 9 primary has already started, they couldn’t back the proposal. It’s a surprise blow against Trump’s national plan that kicked off in August, as the GOP was set to eliminate the only Democratic seat in the state.

Meanwhile, in Maryland, Senate President Bill Ferguson (D) has now publicly flirted with the idea of redrawing their congressional map, despite being the most prominent opponent of the plan for months. Ferguson has signaled that the “rules have changed” in response to the Callais decision. The Old Line State is heavily Democratic and only one seat is Republican-held. That seat, MD01, would be the target of a Democratic gerrymander, as it had been in the 2020 regular redistricting cycle. That map, however, didn’t survive judicial scrutiny.

Alabama lawmakers were blocked by a federal court from using the map they passed earlier this week. Alabama was required to have a second black-majority district in 2024, but the state has appealed that ruling following the Callais decision.

Montgomery Republicans sought to revert to a 2023 map that had just one blue district, but a three-panel judge ruled against it, requiring the state use a map that has two black-majority districts. Republicans say they will appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.

“The endorsement comes at a time when Republicans continue gaining support among Latino voters nationwide, particularly among working-class families, entrepreneurs, small business owners, and younger Hispanic voters increasingly focused on economic issues, public safety, inflation, and quality of life concerns,” said the Blakeman team in a press release.

González-Colón was elected Governor of Puerto Rico in 2024 and served four terms in the House of Representatives as Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner, a position similar to that of a U.S. House member, but one that cannot cast final floor vote.

Local Last week, Suffolk County Legislators honored EMS personnel from each of the eighteen districts across the county.

The event was held in Hauppauge and hosted by Legislator Dominick Thorne (R-Patchogue), Chair of the Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services and Preparedness Committee, and an active volunteer with South Country Ambulance.

The event coincided with EMS Appreciation Week, observed in Suffolk during the third week of May. “It’s a privilege to celebrate the incredible life-saving efforts of these highly trained and dedicated emergency services workers,” said Legislator Thorne in a statement. “Some 600 times a day, our EMS units respond to emergencies throughout the county. EMS personnel are ever ready, ever responding, always

with a high level of professionalism, empathy and care for every patient they come across.”

Thorne shared that his district’s honoree, John Skippon, has a public service record spanning nearly three decades, beginning in 1996 with his joining of the Farmingville Fire Department. Since 2004, Skippon has worked with the Patchogue Ambulance Company, teaches CPR, FirstAid, and Defensive Driving, and has been a full-time police officer with the County since 2009.

On his EMS record, he was 26 cardiac resuscitations, a choking save, and assisted in two births.

Presiding Officer Anthony Piccirillo (R-Holtsville) honored Ryan Stahl, a ten-year member of the Holbrook Fire Department where he has earned “numerous unit citations and life-saving awards.”

“In addition to his volunteer service, Ryan has spent the last four years serving as a Hazardous Materials EMT with the FDNY, specializing in high-risk response environments that require advanced technical knowledge, rapid decisionmaking, and exceptional teamwork,” said Piccirillo in a statement.

Last year alone, Suffolk County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services (FRES) handled nearly 300,000 emergency calls, 185,000 (70%) of which were EMS-related.

East Islip Church’s Jesus Statue Vandalized

Last week, detectives from the Suffolk County Police Department’s Hate Crimes Unit launched an investigation after a statue at St. Mary’s Church in East Islip was damaged. According to the SCPD Hate Crimes Dashboard, Suffolk County has already recorded more than 20 hate crimes and hate incidents so far in 2026.

From January 19 through March 30, 2026, the Suffolk County Police Department recorded 23 total hate-related events, according to the SCPD Hate Crimes Dashboard. Of those, two were officially classified as hate crimes, while 21 were categorized as hate incidents. A hate crime, as defined by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), is a criminal offense that police determine was motivated by bias or hate. In contrast, a hate incident refers to bias-related behavior that may not rise to the level of a criminal charge.

The Second Precinct, which serves residents in the Town of Huntington, and the Sixth Precinct, which serves parts of the Town of Brookhaven, reported the highest number of events, with six each.

Religion-based reports were the most common overall.

Only a few days after the crime was committed, police arrested Deyonna Subert outside of Bay Shore shortly after 6:30 a.m. on May 21. Subert, 41, who police said is undomiciled, was charged with Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree. She was held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned later that day at First District Court in Central Islip.

Subert allegedly decapitated a statue of Jesus outside the church late on the night of May 15. The statue had stood outside St. Mary’s Church for more than a decade. Since the incident, a plastic tarp has covered the

vandalized statue in the church courtyard, where flowers have also been left in the days following the incident.

Many East Islip residents and members of St. Mary’s Church took to social media following the incident, expressing confusion, sadness, and outrage, with hundreds of comments voicing concern over the vandalism. Father Anthony Iaconis, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, told News12 that he discovered the severed head of the Jesus statue in nearby bushes on the church grounds.

Father Anthony also published a statement on the Church of St. Mary’s Facebook saying, “Thank you to everyone who has shown concern and support following the damage to our Sacred Heart Statue. Your prayers,

Legislator Flotteron Recognizes 70-year Member of the Islip Fire Department Legislator Steven J. Flotteron (R-Brightwaters) recognized Benjamin Galletto, a 70-year member of the Islip Fire Department. Galletto joined the Islip Fire Department on May 1, 1956, with a singular purpose—to serve and protect his community. Over the course of seven decades, he has exemplified unwavering dedication, leadership, and commitment to public service. His career began in Fire Police Company #1, where his strong work ethic and natural leadership abilities quickly became evident. He rose through the ranks, serving as an officer and later being elected Assistant Chief, a role he held for four years before being elected Chief of Department from 1972 to 1974.

Following his tenure as Chief, Benjamin continued to serve the department in numerous capacities, including as a member of Engine Company 2 and as Company Secretary.

He also played a vital role in mentoring the next generation as a director of the

Junior Fire Department program, helping to prepare young community members for future service. In 1976, he was elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners, serving with distinction for 35 years until 2011. His leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the department into what it is today.

Throughout his remarkable career, he has held numerous leadership positions, including: 2nd Lieutenant, Fire Police (1960–1962); 1st Lieutenant, Fire Police (1962–1964); Captain, Fire Police (1964–1966); 2nd Assistant Chief (1968–1970); 1st Assistant Chief (1970– 1972); Chief of Department (1972–1974) and Fire Commissioner, Islip Fire District (1976–2011). Presently, he remains an active and engaged member of Fire Police Company #1 and continues to respond to alarms and can often be found on scene, demonstrating the same dedication and professionalism that have defined his entire career.

A similar incident we saw recently involved Suffolk County Police investigating the theft of a Baby Jesus statue from a nativity scene outside the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. The statue, which had been part of the county’s holiday display, disappeared sometime between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, prompting an investigation that included K-9 units and discussions over whether the incident could be considered an anti-Christian hate crime.

As the investigation continues, Suffolk County Police and its Hate Crimes Unit continue working to investigate bias-related incidents and help keep local communities safe. The vandalism at St. Mary’s Church, located at 20 Harrison Avenue in East Islip, has left many parishioners and residents saddened, while also highlighting the department’s ongoing efforts to respond quickly to incidents involving potential hate crimes across the county.

Brentwood Students Earn Top Honors at State Art Competition

Brentwood students earned multiple top honors at the 44th annual New York State Art Teachers Association Olympics of the Visual Arts competition in Saratoga Springs, where more than 200 teams from across the state showcased creative problem-solving and artistic talent.

“Our Brentwood students never stop amazing us,” said Superintendent Wanda Ortiz-Rivera. “Their creativity, imagination and ability to express themselves in such powerful ways is truly inspiring. To see our students recognized at the New York State Olympics of the Visual Arts is such a proud moment for our entire Brentwood community. These accomplishments reflect so much more than artistic talent, they reflect teamwork, perseverance, confidence and heart.”

Over three months, students collaborated on projects in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, illustration and fashion design.

East Middle School earned first-place finishes in photography, painting and sculpture, while teams from North Elementary, Twin Pines Elementary, Southwest Elementary and Brentwood High School also placed in several categories, including fashion, illustration and sculpture.

“I am so grateful to our teachers for nurturing these gifts,” OrtizRivera added, “and to our students for representing Brentwood with such pride, passion and excellence.”

Hauppauge H.S. Students Hear Firsthand Accounts from Veterans Ahead of Memorial Day Hauppauge High School eleventh grade social studies students received a powerful, personal lesson in history as five Veterans visited to share their experiences and reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day. Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Frank D’Aversa, retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Grace Mehl, retired U.S. Navy Seal and Purple Heart recipient Ron Paccianna, retired U.S. Navy officer and Nassau County Police Detective Michael O’Leary and retired U.S. Army officer, Purple Heart recipient and Gold Star father Clarence Simpson spoke with students about their service and the importance of honoring those who gave their lives for the country.

Throughout the visit, the Veterans

shared firsthand accounts of their time in Vietnam and other military experiences, offering students a rare glimpse into the realities of service and sacrifice. The discussions were described as moving as students listened to personal stories that brought history into sharper focus. The students also passed around a Purple Heart, giving them a tangible reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces.

Cmdr. Grace Mehl encouraged students to take time on Memorial Day to reflect. “I want you to spend a minute on Memorial Day remembering those who gave their lives so that we can live on in peace,” Mehl said.

The Veterans also spoke about resources available to help service members cope with the long-term effects of their experiences, as well as the importance of giving back by volunteering in Veterans’ hospitals, nursing homes and other care

facilities.

The session provided students with an impactful opportunity to connect classroom learning with lived experience, leaving a lasting impression ahead of the Memorial Day holiday.

East Islip’s ‘Lucky 13’ Bring Home the Special Olympics Gold East Islip’s Special Olympics team competed with great enthusiasm, athleticism and sportsmanship in this year’s Spring Games, held on May 2 at Alfred G. Berner Middle School in Massapequa. East Islip’s newly expanded team ranged in age from 8 to 29 years old, and included student athletes from East Islip High School, East Islip Middle School and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School as well as returning alumni. The “Lucky 13” athletes brought home 15 gold, seven silver and three bronze medals in a variety of track and field events.

Blue Point Time Travels to the 1700s Blue Point Elementary School fourth graders stepped back in time during Colonial Day, experiencing what daily life may have been like in early America through hands-on activities and interactive stations.

Students participated in a reenactment of a typical colonial school

day by reading from the “Blue Point Primer” and practicing their alphabet using horn books along with feather and ink writing tools. They also rotated through a variety of colonial-themed stations, including candle making and weaving.

leading up to the American Revolution, a “tax collector” visited classrooms to collect taxes in the form of M&Ms, helping students experience firsthand the frustration colonists once felt. Students also churned their own butter by hand and enjoyed it with delicious cornbread.

History and Origin

The FY2026 budget approval for the DOE was $63.3 billion, which includes funding for the Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation. The department workforce comprises about 109,000 employees, 14,000 federal-level employees and over 95,000 management, operating, and contracting positions. There are over 83 field locations nationwide.

The seventeenth and current Secretary of Energy is Chris Wright (R-CO) (pictured right), who assumed the position on February 3, 2025. He was nominated by President Donald Trump (R-FL) was confirmed in a 5938 vote of the U.S. Senate. He earned the support of seven Democrats and one Independent who caucuses with the Democrats. He notably earned the support of both of his homestate Senators, who are Democrats.

In 1992, Wright founded Pinnacle Technologies, which commercially produces shale gas through fracking. He served as CEO until 2006. He chaired Stroud Energy, another shale gas company, before selling in 2006.

In 2011, he founded Liberty Energy, which, under Wright’s leadership, got in on the fracking boom of the 2010s. Wright sold the company for $5.6 million in 2023.

In 2019, Wright made headlines for drinking fracking fluid to demonstrate its safety. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Denver Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City from January 2020 to April 2024.

Before his ascension to the Cabinet, Wright had testified to federal groups that “there is no climate crisis” and that “we’re not in the midst of an energy transition.” He’s also called the term “carbon pollution” misleading.

As Secretary, Wright has supported rollbacks of climate change measures and has overseen the DOE’s prerogative questioning mainstream findings on the subject. He’s said that “too little” CO2 in the atmosphere is a “bigger risk” than too much CO2, and that climate change is not an impact on extreme weather events.

He’s also called the plans for net-zero emissions by 2050 a “colossal train wreck” and a “monstrous human impoverishment program.”

Wright has also been an advocate for nuclear power and said that it would receive the largest amounts of loans from the DOE. Bureaus and Agencies Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office (EERE): This group creates and directs programs to increase the production of renewable energy, such as solar, biomass, wind, geothermal, alcohol fuels, and hydrogen. They also work to improve energy efficiency of transit, buildings, industrial, and utility sectors through R&D. Additionally, it administers programs that provide financial assistance to state energy plans, implementing state and local conservation plans, promote energy efficient construction and renovation of federal buildings,

and weatherizes houses owned by the poor.

Energy Information Administration (EIA): The statistical and analytical wing of the DOE, this bureau collects and analyzes energy information for the purpose of policymaking. Federalregister.gov describes the EIA as the “nation’s premier source of energy information.”

Their data, analyses, and forecasts are “independent of approval by any other officer or employee of the U.S. government.”

Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E): This department advances “high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private-sector investment,” according to the DOE’s website. These projects are to develop new ways to generate, store, and utilize energy, as well as to discourage disruptive technologies.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC): This bureau regulates interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil. It sets rates for transportation and sale of natural gas and oil via pipelines, administers valuation of those pipelines, and reviews proposals to build liquefied natural gas terminals, interstate natural gas pipelines, and the licensure of hydropower projects. FERC is composed of five commissioners who each serve five-year terms, appointed by the president. The president appoints one member to serve as the Chairman.

National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA): This agency was created by Congress through the National Defense Authorization Act of 2000. It merged the DOE’s Defense Programs, Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, and Naval Reactors bureaus to be overseen by an undersecretary who reports directly to the DOE Secretary. NNSA is concerned with strengthening U.S. security through military usage of nuclear energy and reducing the global threat of weapons of mass destruction.

Nuclear Energy Office: This office promotes nuclear power as a “resource capable of meeting the nation’s energy, environmental, and national security needs by resolving technical and regulatory barriers through research, development, and demonstration,” according to the DOE website.

Office of Energy Dominance Financing (EDF): This branch works to ensure that American energy and manufacturing products contribute “meaningfully” to the country’s energy security, grid reliability, and affordability.

It helps the private sector invest “in the future, help win the AI race, strengthen American industry, and restore American energy dominance.”

Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM): Works to minimize the environmental impacts of fossil fuels and invests in carbon capture and storage.

Office of Environment Management: Works to remediate and reduce risk of the country’s nuclear weapons production and research.

Power Administrations: The DOE has various regional power administrations: Alaska, Bonneville (Pacific Northwest), Southeastern, Southwestern, Western, Arctic, etc.

Office of Science: Oversees and supports physical research and 10 of the DOE’s 17 National Laboratories.

The first origins of the DOE go back to World War II, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers administered the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bombs.

The Atomic Energy Commission then took up further control of nuclear projects in 1946, after the war had ended. The act that created the commission also created the framework for the country’s National Laboratories. Today, 17 exist across the country, one of them being Brookhaven National Lab in Upton.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower (R-KS) signed the Atomic Energy Act, which allowed for developments of a civilian nuclear power program.

The 1973 oil crisis was the final event necessary to warrant a DOE, namely one that saw split administration between atomic research and everyday energy concerns. In October 1973, the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) implemented an oil embargo against any country that had supported Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, which saw Egypt and Syria launch a surprise attack in an attempt to reclaim territories they’d lost to Israel during the Six-Day War in 1967.

With its embargoes, OAPEC targeted the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, and Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe).

While the embargo was lifted in March 1974, oil prices had skyrocketed from $3 per barrel to $12 per barrel. The short-term and long-term effects are described as the “first oil shock” in the modern global oil market. U.S. demand for oil was peaking by the 1970s and began importing oil from Venezuela and Canada.

To consolidate energy policy, President Jimmy Carter (D-GA) signed into law a bill to create the DOE. The agency began on October 1, 1977, and consolidated the Federal Energy Administration, the Energy Research and Development Administration, and the Federal Power Commission, among others. Carter’s intention with the DOE was to promote energy conservation, energy independence, and developing alternative energies to ease U.S. reliance on fossil fuels.

James Schlesinger (R-VA) served as the first Secretary of Energy under President Carter from 1977 to 1979. He’d previously served as Chair of the Atomic Energy Commission, Director of Central Intelligence, and Secretary of Defense - all under President Richard Nixon (R-CA). Schlesinger’s defense and nuclear backgrounds parlayed into his tenure at DOE, where he stressed Soviet nuclear threats and adequate U.S. defenses.

As Secretary, Schlesinger launched the Carbon Dioxide Effects and Assessment Program in 1977 to study CO2’s effects on the atmosphere, and would be a key voice in civilian nuclear power. Regarding climate change studies, Schlesinger opined to then-President Carter that the issues were “too uncertain to warrant Presidential involvement and policy initiatives.” Thus, Schlesinger is seen as one of the first modern detractors against greater climate change narratives and action within the federal government.

A/S Italian Fine Foods Remains a Staple in East Islip 30 Years Later

By Madison Warren For the past 30 years, A/S Italian Fine Foods has remained a beloved staple not only in the East Islip community but also throughout many surrounding towns. Known for offering a unique experience that customers cannot easily find elsewhere, the market features fresh and imported cheeses, specialty meats, pasta, cold cuts, pre-made meals, gift baskets, and a wide variety of authentic Italian favorites, making it a true one-stop shop for Italian food lovers.

Located in the heart of East Islip, A/S, a familyowned business has been committed to providing nothing but the best for its customers. Owner Ralph Pica said he has been in this business since he was a child. His father, Gregorio, came from Italy for a better future.

His father first worked at a bakery across the street from one of the original A/S stores in Brooklyn.

At the time, several of his family members had already entered the business and, as it continued to grow and thrive, they encouraged him to join as well.

He eventually became part of the business, working under Anthony Scicchitano, the inspiration behind the name “A/S.” From there, the business continued to grow. At one point, there were 52 stores throughout the tristate area, including 16 locations across Long Island.

Ralph explained that over the years, many of the stores relocated south to states such as Florida, following the growing number of New Yorkers moving there and the shift in demand.

In 1996, Ralph took over the East Islip location.

The store was originally opened by his cousin and his cousin’s business partner, but over time, the partnership fell apart. At the time, Ralph was working full-time in the city in the stock market but still spent his evenings and weekends helping at the store whenever he could. Eventually, his cousin approached him about becoming his new business partner.

Taking a leap of faith, Ralph agreed, a decision that would ultimately shape the future of the East Islip location.

Ralph said the business has always been in his blood, and after being around it his entire life, he felt drawn to it naturally. Although his father encouraged him to create his own path because of how demanding the business could be, Ralph said he could not stay away from it and has never looked back since.

After some time, the two were successfully running the East Islip location and eventually opened a second store together in Sayville. Ralph said they were working seven days a week, trying to keep up with the demands of both locations. After a pipe burst at the Sayville location, the store was later relocated to Merrick.

With the constant travel between both stores becoming exhausting, the pair eventually agreed that Ralph would remain at the East Islip location while his cousin would operate the Merrick store.

According to Ralph, the arrangement has worked ever since, with both locations continuing to thrive.

Over the years, Ralph focused on building the East Islip store into a destination customers could rely on for quality products and authentic Italian specialties.

He said the goal was never to be like a typical supermarket, but instead to provide customers with fresh, carefully selected products that are becoming harder to find elsewhere.

He said that since 1996, nearly 40% of his

customers have moved out of state, but he still maintains a strong base of loyal customers that keeps him motivated. Many continue returning to A/S for specialty products and quality items they cannot easily find elsewhere.

“We give them real prime meats. We give them Berkshire pork, the highest-quality you can get. We give them Bell & Evans Chicken, organic chicken, which you can’t get anywhere else,” Ralph told The Messenger.

Ralph explained that while some supermarkets and wholesale retailers, such as Costco, may carry similar brands, like Bell & Evans, many are prepackaged and vacuum-sealed with gases and preservatives to extend shelf life, which he says differs from the freshness and quality A/S provides.

He believes the store’s commitment to avoiding hormones and unnecessary chemicals, along with its ability to keep prices affordable through high customer volume, is what continues to set A/S apart and keep loyal customers returning.

They also provide customers with top-of-the-line recipes and cooking guidance, making A/S much more than just a typical pork store. Their pre-made meals are carefully crafted and prepared with quality ingredients, creating an experience that keeps customers coming back for more.

Ralph said the team he has built is full of “all-stars” who truly enjoy being part of the East Islip community.

Over the years, he said he has developed personal relationships with many of his customers, standing beside them through life’s biggest moments, from illnesses and marriages to the birth of children.

The connection between the store and the community goes far beyond business, with

customers knowing him on a personal level just as much as he knows them. He said he has even invited customers-turned-friends and family to his annual Fourth of July party.

When discussing future plans, Ralph shared that he has, at times, considered eventually moving to Florida, where many of his longtime customers have relocated over the years. He explained that he already owns a home there and that there is an existing A/S store located in Fort Myers.

However, Ralph made it clear that the East Islip location is not going anywhere because of its importance to both him and the community. While the idea of relocating has crossed his mind over the years, he emphasized that nothing has been decided, especially given that much of his family remains in New York.

A/S is what it is today because of Ralph and his family’s unwavering support. One person who means especially a great deal to Ralph is his 12-yearold son, who, much like Ralph at that age, is already growing up around the business and naturally gravitating toward the shop’s atmosphere. Ralph said his son already has a strong passion for cooking and tries to spend as much time at the store as possible, especially on weekends.

He also noted that his son has a natural ability to connect with people, and if he ultimately decided to follow in the family business, Ralph said he would fully support him. In many ways, Ralph said, history is beginning to repeat itself. Just as his father once encouraged him to find his own, Ralph now finds himself giving that same advice to his own son, reminding him that while rewarding, the business is far from easy.

But he stated that no matter what his son decides to do, he will be exceptionally great at it.

As A/S Fine Foods celebrates 30 years in East Islip, Ralph and his team have taken time to reflect on the journey that brought them to where they are today.

From building lifelong relationships with customers to maintaining the quality and traditions that first made the store stand out, A/S has become far more than just a local market; it has become a part of the community itself. With a loyal customer base, strong family support, and a continued commitment to authentic, high-quality food, Ralph hopes A/S Fine Foods will continue serving generations of families for many years to come.

Albany Democrats Tighten Sanctuary Policies

By Matt Meduri Seventeen states plus the District of Columbia have sanctuary laws, those that limit law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities and protect illegal immigrants from certain legal ramifications based on the offense of entering the country illegally. The laws vary by state, but New York is one of them.

As State legislators jump the final hurdle in what is Governor Kathy Hochul’s (D-Hamburg) fifth delayed budget since she assumed office in 2021, and the latest budget under her tenure to date, Albany Democrats managed to work in a proposal to further strengthen New York’s already-liberal sanctuary laws.

The final proposed budget as it’s presented to lawmakers is divided into ten sections. The third section includes immigration provisions, the highlight of which is a limitation of 287(g), a federal agreement that allows local law enforcement to cooperate with or be deputized by federal immigration authorities. It allows said local law enforcement to serve certain civil immigration concerns, conduct detentions, and carry out arrest warrants.

“It pretty much bars any cooperation,” Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo (R-Sayville) (pictured right) told The Messenger. “In Suffolk County, if someone who’s here illegally commits a crime that doesn’t qualify as bail-eligible, local law enforcement could contact Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to make an arrest on immigration grounds and get that person off the street. Now, any of that cooperation will be in violation of the new sanctuary laws.”

Gandolfo added that local officials were already hamstrung enough and have had to get creative on ensuring public safety. District Attorney Ray Tierney (R) recently dropped a charge to a desk appearance so ICE could make an arrest, as ICE can’t

make arrests at courthouses in New York under the “Protect Our Courts” statute.

Gandolfo says that Albany Democrats have a “lot of the gripes” that have “nothing to do with local cooperation.”

“They have general grievances with ICE. I think it’s a political calculation that they have to be seen as standing up to the federal government. They’re pointing to what happened in Minnesota and trying to extrapolate that that’s what would happen here if there’s cooperation with local police.”

Gandolfo counters with the opposite, in that the absence of local cooperation led to the situation unraveling on two separate occasions.

“What they’re [Democrats] doing here [New York] is a total overreaction and it’s a solution in search of a problem that doesn’t exist. To completely bar local police from working with ICE even in situations where the person here illegally is out committing crimes is just lunacy to me. It serves no public safety purpose.”

Gandolfo said that Hochul and some Democrats had softened their images on immigration at the height of the migrant crisis, but ramped up resistance after Donald Trump (R-FL) returned to Washington. Moreover, he warns that if local jails can’t connect with federal authorities, then the federal government will have no choice but to detain that person in any feasible facility, one that might be in a different state.

“Even if ICE wanted to keep that person closer to home and their families, they’re forced to send them out of state because local authorities can’t cooperate. Most people wouldn’t be sympathetic to a heinous criminal getting split up from their family, but a civil arrest could not be housed in a non-federal facility here in New York.”

Long Island History Hunt: Redcoats & Rebels Edition

The second annual History Hunt kicked off on Sunday, with a special edition titled “Redcoats & Rebels” commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. Memorial Day Weekend wasn’t particularly sunshine and rainbows, but the kickoff made up for it.

The Long Island History Hunt serves an educational purpose, to immerse ourselves in the rich history Long Island has to offer. I obtained a Masters in Journalism in 2024. My final project was a magazine highlighting the hidden gems on Long Island. I know just how special it is to live here, to learn about all the unique places and ancient stories all around us.

The 250th anniversary of the country is quickly approaching, and it’s set to be quite the celebration. The Redcoats & Rebels edition of the hunt will highlight 26 museums, landmarks, and historical sites across the Island that have ties to the Revolutionary War. There’s no better way to celebrate than by scavenging Long Island for the epic sites spanning from Montauk to the East End. “We worked with the sponsor, the Robert David Lion Gardner Foundation. They’re all about preserving Long Island history, and they support it through grants to the different museums and historic sites,” Ann Balderston-Glynn, a member of the History Hunt staff, told The Messenger. “We were trying to find ways to get people to move around to different museums that they may never have gone to. We want to get people to go around to the different historic sites of museums and learn more about the little-known stories of Long Island’s connection to the American Revolution.”

The contest kicked off on May 23 and runs until September 30. Balderston-Glynn said that at the Jones Beach kickoff, people were already waiting to sign up for the contest and braved the rain to do so.

Registration available online to participate and win prizes. The ultimate winner who completes the tasks and challenges will be crowned Revolutionary Trailblazer.

The cash prize? $1776.00.

A luncheon, merchandise, and other cool prizes are also up for grabs.

“I would say that you do not have to be into history to do this. I think what makes it fun is that there’s this interaction that you do, the selfie challenge, where you’re going and discovering things on top of the historical part. Part of the selfie challenge is that it will tell you to go find something.

It’s like a treasure hunt, it’s a little more interactive, and the whole idea is to involve people who might not necessarily be history lovers or history buffs,” said Balderston-Glynn.

If you’re a collector, special edition trading cards might be right in your wheelhouse. The set features 26 different revolutionary figures associated with each site. The trading cards are free and available at each site during their visiting hours.

“Last year, we had people who, as part of this gentleman’s retirement, his two friends took him. Every week, they picked a place to go to, and they would go there, and then they

would go have lunch somewhere. They were making it like an event, not just for history, but then they would spend time together. People made it into their own personal adventures as well as the history part,” said Balderston-Glynn.

Raising a Glass to Biodynamic Farming at Farrm Wine

Farrm Wine, a family-owned farm in Calverton, has recently earned a biodynamic certification. Owners Rex and Connie Farr have upheld organic farming practices since 1985, making Farrm Wine Long Island’s only 100% certified organic vineyard. Guided by Rudolf Steiner’s biodynamic philosophy, the certification reflects decades of patience, dedication, and sustainable farming practices.

The achievement places Farrm Wine among just three vineyards on the East Coast to receive this prestigious designation, further strengthening its reputation for environmental stewardship and regenerative agriculture.

Farrm is also the only Long Island winery to hold both 100% USDA Organic certification and Demeter Biodynamic certification.

Farrm Wine has also earned recognition for several of its handcrafted wines, including its Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Rosé. Working alongside respected North Fork winemaker Greg Gove, the Farrs have continued to refine and expand their offerings, creating carefully curated wines sold directly from the farm and at select local restaurants and hotels.

The certification was awarded by Demeter USA, widely recognized as the world’s oldest and most rigorous biodynamic certification organization. Unlike standard USDA organic requirements, Demeter certification requires farms to operate as fully self-sustaining ecosystems that work in harmony with natural cycles, soil health, and biodiversity.

To mark the milestone, Demeter USA Executive Director Evrett Lunquist traveled from Nebraska to personally present the certification to Rex and Connie Farr, recognizing decades of dedication, patience, and environmentally conscious farming practices at Farrm Wine.

Lunquist explained that Demeter has served as the certifier of biodynamic agriculture in the United States since 1985, with the first biodynamic certification dating

back to 1928 in what is now Germany. Lunquist noted that becoming biodynamic-certified is an extensive process involving applications, inspections, and annual reviews to ensure farms continue to meet Demeter’s strict standards.

He explained that certification can take anywhere from three to nine months and requires farms to integrate multiple elements into one functioning ecosystem, including agriculture, biodiversity preservation, and soil regeneration practices.

Biodynamic certification goes far beyond traditional organic farming standards, requiring farms to operate as complete self-sustaining ecosystems rather than simply avoiding synthetic chemicals. While USDA organic certification focuses largely on what cannot be used during the growing process, Demeter Biodynamic certification evaluates the entire farm as a living organism, emphasizing biodiversity, soil regeneration, and long-term ecological balance. Farms seeking certification must meet strict requirements, including setting aside at least 10% of their

land as permanent biodiversity preserves made up of forests, wetlands, pollinator habitats, or other natural areas that support the surrounding ecosystem.

The certification process also requires farms to minimize outside inputs and naturally generate fertility through composting, crop rotation, and livestock integration. Annual inspections and soil testing are conducted to measure carbon content, microbial activity, and overall soil health.

Biodynamic farming also incorporates specialized preparations developed by philosopher Rudolf Steiner, including “Preparation 500,” a process where cow manure is packed into a cow horn and buried underground over winter to create a concentrated, nutrient-rich substance designed to improve soil vitality and microbial life. According to Demeter USA Executive Director Evrett Lunquist, biodynamic farming is both “a philosophy and a discipline,” centered around creating healthier, more regenerative farmland through natural methods.

Rex Farr spoke about the magnitude of the achievement, emphasizing the importance of healthier and more sustainable farming practices not only for Long Island but for the country as a whole. During the event, he thanked the many individuals who helped make the certification possible, including Steve Storch, the Vortex Brewer team, and several community members he has worked alongside throughout the years.

The biodynamic certification marks a major milestone for Rex and Connie Farr, reflecting decades of hard work, dedication, and commitment to environmentally conscious farming. With this accomplishment, Farrm Wine continues to set itself apart as a leader in sustainable agriculture on Long Island. Cheers to Farrm Wine!

There’s So Much to Love About The Engeman’s Lavish Production of

‘Camelot’

“The Lusty Month of May” is the perfect time for a revival of the four-time Tony Award-winning musical “Camelot.”

The John W. Engeman Theater turns back time and, for one brief shining moment, brings the Golden Age of Broadway to Long Island audiences. Inspired by the collection of fantasy novels, “The Once and Future King,” by T.H. White, “Camelot” opened on Broadway in 1960 with music by Frederick Loewe and book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, featuring a blockbuster cast that included Richard Burton, Julie Andrews, and Robert Goulet.

Set in the mythical kingdom of Camelot, the story follows King Arthur’s altruistic dream of building a utopian society governed by chivalry, justice, honor, and compassion. His ideals are tested when his wife, Queen Guenevere, falls in love with Lancelot, a young knight, putting the future of Camelot in jeopardy.

Montgomery Sutton delivered a nuanced performance as King Arthur, an ordinary man affectionately nicknamed “Wart” in his youth, who became king by kismet rather than by royal birthright. The show opens with Sutton showcasing his warm tenor in the humorous song “I Wonder What the King Is Doing Tonight,” which presents King Arthur as a witty, likable yet nervous and insecure man. Sutton’s heartfelt delivery of the show’s signature song, “Camelot,” was one of the production’s highlights.

how he should respond. As a civilized king, he realized they had not asked for this calamity. He ponders, “Can passion be selected?” He resigns himself to the fact that “violence is not strength and compassion is not weakness,” and decides to act with integrity. Sutton’s impassioned delivery of the reflective

ballad “How to Handle a Woman” was a tender onstage moment, allowing the audience to experience the depth of Arthur’s love for his wife despite the hurt and betrayal he was going through.

Liv Kurtz was perfectly cast as the beautiful and conflicted Guenevere.

With her magnificent, crisp soprano, reminiscent of a young Julie Andrews, Kurtz delivered a charmingly playful rendition of “The Simple Joys of Maidenhood,” in which she reveals her fears of losing her freedom if she marries into royal life. A showstopping number was “The Lusty Month of May,” in which the Knights, Ensemble, and Guenevere celebrate spring, a shocking time of year, “When tons of wicked little thoughts merrily appear.” The full range of Kurtz’s angelic voice was revealed in the heartbreaking ballad, “I Loved You Once in Silence.”

Alexander Ríos delivered a commanding performance as the valiant Lancelot, an arrogant man quite smitten with himself, strutting across the stage and singing the comedic introductory song “C’est Moi.” At first, Guenevere feels nothing but disdain for him. However, Lancelot begins to reveal a more introspective side to her when he says, “But the refining of the soul is an endless struggle.” Act II opened with Ríos’s beautifully executed version of one of Broadway’s most beloved romantic ballads, “If Ever I Would Leave You.” The electrifying onstage chemistry between Ríos and Kurtz made their delivery of the heartrending duet, “Before I Gaze at You Again,” an unforgettable theatrical moment.

James Kelley Carroll gave an award-worthy performance as Mordred, Arthur’s narcissistic illegitimate son, who arrives in

Camelot hellbent on usurping the throne.

Mordred reveals his lack of conscience and warped sense of morality in his dark, satirical solo “The Seven Deadly Virtues.” Carroll’s villainous scowl and sinister body language sent chills down my spine.

The three multitalented Knights, Christopher deProphetis as Lionel, John Alejandro Jeffords as Dinadan, and Riley Wesson as Sagramore, were outstanding in their roles, as was Derek Martin Hough as Tom, a young, idealistic boy who ran away from home to join the Round Table.

Max DeLuca understudies Tom. The topnotch ensemble includes Jack Baylis, Jaz Gomez, Lily Grubert, and Israel R. Hillery.

“Camelot” is a surprisingly in-depth exploration of love. King Arthur and Lancelot’s love for Guenevere represents eros, passionate, romantic, sensual love, whereas his brotherly love for Lancelot is a perfect example of philia.

During the “Finale Ultimo,” King Arthur demonstrates agape, unconditional love for humankind, when he knights Tom and commands him not to fight, but to travel back home to spread the legend of Camelot to future generations. Arthur then demonstrates his love for his Maker by recognizing that the outcome of war is beyond his control and that he must leave the decision to God. A big round of applause goes to Engeman’s outstanding creative team.

Expertly directed by Drew Humphrey, brilliantly choreographed by Alyssa Sarnoff, with precision-perfect musical direction by David Wolfson, a bedazzling storybook set by Kyle Dixon, and breathtaking costumes by Dustin Cross, the team brought the magical world of Arthurian legend to life.

In the Director’s Note, Humphrey said it best, “As we journey through this legend, I invite you to be patient with yourself. Let your empathy and introspection guide you. This story asks us to sit in the gray space between right and wrong, to relate, forgive, struggle, and empathize.”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris recently dropped several not too subtle hints that she wants to run for president in 2028. Polls, at least for now, show the leading likely Democrat candidate is California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Many Democrat pundits and insiders say Harris’ failed run against Donald Trump renders her damaged goods, and therefore insufficiently attractive to the donor class.

The Los Angeles Times recently wrote: “As Kamala Harris eyes a possible 2028 presidential bid, there is little outward enthusiasm among her biggest 2024 backers to fund a repeat performance …

“The Times reached out to more than two dozen top donors to the biggest proHarris super PAC in 2024. Several of them said they do not plan to support her should she choose to run or declined to talk about her. Others did not respond.”

For Harris, this sounds ominous. But there’s a flaw in this reasoning, and it represents a huge threat to Newsom’s plans, as well as those of any of the other names floated as possible candidates.

It is true that Harris lost every swing state. It is true that Harris performed worse than Biden among nearly every major racial and gender demographic group, except one: black women.

Among black men, Donald Trump got 20% of their vote, an astonishingly high number for a Republican presidential candidate. But black women stood firm.

They love Harris.

A Washington Post exit poll found Harris, among black female voters, got over 92% of their vote, a higher percentage than those who voted for Biden.

Newsom, like many Democrats who refused to say so out loud, believed Biden lacked the capacity to run for reelection. Like a vulture, he hovered above the White House looking for a time to pounce. But Newsom knew black female voters, the most loyal part of the Democratic base, would not take kindly to a white male elbowing Harris out of the chance to become the first female president and the first black female president. So, he gritted his teeth and sat it out.

Many black female voters consider the jokes about Harris’ “cackle” and the disparaging comments about her “word salad” answers both sexist and racist. In November 2021, TheGrio, a publication that focuses on the black community, published an article defending Harris against what it considered unfair criticism with this headline: “Can a sista get a break? Kamala Harris is an easy scapegoat amid media’s broadside against her.” It is a must-read for Newsom and others looking to compete against a possible Harris candidacy.

The author, Sophia A. Nelson, who once ran for Congress as a Republican but is now an independent, wrote: “… A group of my sorority sisters (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) and I were lamenting about how little respect Harris, also a soror, receives from her own administration and national media.

“As the first woman and first woman of color to be elected to the nation’s second highest office, you would expect that Vice President Harris would have been given a much higher-profile portfolio of issues to manage, as well as be used more strategically, considering the loyal and influential Black women voter base of the Democratic Party. …

“Why is Harris getting the blame for the clear dysfunction of the Biden administration? Because she is the easy scapegoat. Aren’t we always?

“Black women are as Zora Neale Hurston once said, ‘the mules of the world.’ We do all the work and we plow, and we dig, and we support, and we help.

And in return we get little to no thanks — just as Harris and Black women voters who put Biden in the White House are finding out. …

“Black women are always the spectators in the arena, versus being allowed the space be one of the victors in the arena. … It’s always a double standard for Black women — and it’s exhausting.”

South Carolina will be an early, if the not first, Democrat primary state for the 2028 presidential election. Sixty percent of the South Carolina Democrat primary voters are black, and of that number 60% to 65% are black females.

How will Newsom explain his “vote-for-me-instead-ofKamala” candidacy to black female Democrat voters, many of whom feel disrespected and unrewarded despite their loyalty to the party? Simply demonizing Trump as a “fascist” won’t cut it.

I Finally Opened the Love Letter

For many years, this love letter sat on my shelf, unread and untouched, simply because it was misunderstood. I thought that the writer’s intent was to only gain control of my life.

The letter quickly collected dust while its pages slowly absorbed the scent of loneliness, not because the letter is lonely per say, but because it’s Author awaits daily for the object of His heart and His affection to read what He wrote. He wrote it and sent it specifically with the hope that we would open it.

Daily, this love letter called out to me. It didn’t shout though; it was a just a whisper. The Author is gentle, kind, and ever so patient. As I sought the entire globe for love, a purpose, wholeness, and my reason for existing, the letter continued to sit alone and collect dust. Again, the fear was that I would be restrained and controlled by the Author. I wanted to be “free” to find my own answers, the answers that I wanted, on my terms, and in my own way. It was all about me, myself and I. Years went by and every other avenue became a dead end. Life had squeezed over time and wrung me out like a dish rag. All of the other love, promises, and hopes had shown themselves as counterfeit. Finally, I decided to dust off the love letter, not really willingly or excitedly, but more so out of frustration and desperation.

It’s pages we’re stuck together by humidity and smelled like mildew. It sat alone for so long that it was aesthetically undesirable, but that didn’t matter anymore. It was no longer about outer appearance; it was about real life.

What mattered now was that I was ready to hear what the Author and sender had to say, ready for the letters words to change my heart, mind, soul, and eternal destination.

I didn’t read the letter; it ended up reading me. Its words spoke to me about my life both in the present and far past, even as far back to my childhood. I felt seen and known by the Author. It explained to me why I was feeling the way that I was, where I had gone wrong and the internal solution. Little did I know that the Author provided the solution before my life even began in the womb.

The love letter spoke to me about hope for the future, about an even greater hope after this life’s curtain call falls for the final time. It gently suggested what I should keep busy with in the meantime and the best way to treat the fellow travelers I meet along the journey. The Author said that He was able to write these words onto my heart, so that the words became a way of life, not just an unattainable moral code or unachievable set of religious laws.

The love letter isn’t sanitized down to be palatable. It’s real, raw, and balanced. It speaks of both good and evil, right and wrong, ease and suffering.

It talks of the emotions that we all feel in different parts of life we go through.

Thankfully, it doesn’t mince words or paint everything as perfect. If it did, it wouldn’t be speaking of true love.

From the Old Testament right through the New, the heart, mind, character, and ways of God are revealed to us. God wrote us a letter of love that we so often look right past. Many say it’s outdated and out of touch. I’ve said the same things myself and much worse. I’ve even cursed at the book and used its pages to smoke marijuana, all until I flipped it open one day to never be the same again. The Author is so forgiving.

The Bible is a letter to not only humanity, but to each individual human ever created. It’s the letter from The Eternal Father, Rescuer, and Redeemer looking for those who may feel lost. If you’ve run back and forth searching the globe for answers yet still feel empty.

This may be your sign to take a short journey over to your bookshelf.

Smithtown East

Defeats East Islip in Lacrosse Semifinals

The number one seeded Smithtown East Bulls took down East Islip 12-9 in the Section XI Class B boys lacrosse semifinals to advance to the County Championship.

Bulls’ junior midfielder Jack Reddock won the opening faceoff and streaked down the middle of the field, evading every East Islip defender in his path and before even 10 seconds had gone off the clock, his shot found the back of the net giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead. While the game had its back-andforth moments, this shot by the University of Albany commit was a preview for what was to come in a statement victory as the Bulls defended their home turf.

The Bulls were able to hold off multiple runs from East Islip through a balanced offensive attack. East Islip and their zone defense was able to limit senior attacker Cameron James, who is committed to play college lacrosse in the Big 10 at John Hopkins University and entered the contest as the sixth leading goal scorer in the county, to just two goals and four total points. However, the Bulls demonstrated their depth with eight different players contributing points and six different goal scorers.

“I think we have the most depth in the entire league,” senior attack Hunter Hughes, who contributed three goals and one assist for the Bulls, told The Messenger. “Anyone from one side of the field to the other, everyone [can] pass and catch, everyone knows what they’re doing, everyone’s on the same page, and that’s why I think we’re so good.”

The Bulls have been more than good this season, compiling a 13-3 record in the regular season, with just one league loss coming at the hands of Comsewogue High School back on May 7.

They imposed their will early on East Islip, scoring three goals in the first three and a half minutes, including an unassisted goal from Hughes at the 8:32 mark that saw Hughes cut through the middle of the field and fire it back into the net untouched to give the Bulls an early three goal advantage.

East Islip did not go away easily. The defending Class B County Champions are led by Sean Hannigan, a junior attack who is committed to play at Boston University in two years.

Hannigan is fifth in Suffolk County in assists with 67, and leads an underclassmen heavy squad, including eighth grader Cody Stebbins who got Islip on the board with an unassisted top shelf goal with about eight minutes remaining in the first. After a Hannigan goal later in the quarter, Islip had life and were able to control the rest of the quarter.

After a back and forth start to the second, it was East Islip’s sophomore duo that was able to even up the score at three goals apiece. Sophomore midfielder Alex Theodoropoulos wrapped around the net and found sophomore attack Owen Madden on the right post, Madden caught it and bounced it into the goal. Madden was East Islip’s leading goal scorer this season with 38.

The Bulls were able to finish the half strong and regain momentum, with two goals from senior attack Brendan Power less than 90 seconds apart, they had a 5-3 lead and once again there was life both on their sidelines and in the bleachers.

With just over two minutes left in the half, Power found Hughes in the middle of the field about 20 yards out from the goal. Hughes reared back, and fired a ripper to the back of the net and the crowd went wild as they sang along to “Hey Baby”, by DJ Otzi, the Bulls’ signature song that was played after every goal.

“Just keep the kids grounded,” Bulls head coach Kevin Huff told The Messenger when asked about the challenges of managing the The Bulls Midfielder momentum swings of the first half. “Don’t get too Campbell Cracchiola high, don’t get too low, know what our needs are

and let’s try to accomplish those goals, and they did.”

Despite a crafty goal from Madden to end the half, the Bulls did not relinquish their grip in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals over just over five minutes of gametime in the middle of the quarter to put the game on ice, holding a commanding 11-4 lead. All five of the goals were assisted, and Huff said that ball movement was a key to breaking East Islip’s zone.

“We had sort of a cycle type of offense where we keep cycling the ball and try to get them out of their defensive shape and overcommit two guys to the wrong zone,” said Huff. “I think we did a good job, we did a good job with that all year. We have a couple of good formations to run out, so that part was good.”

East Islip scored five more goals throughout the remainder of the contest, including three from Theodoropoulos, but it was not enough. A caused turnover and groundball by Troy Ress, Smithtown East junior midfielder, led to a fastbreak. Ress found James on the run and James put it in the back of the net, giving the Bulls a 12-7 lead with eight minutes to go, proving to be an insurmountable lead.

East Islip ended the game with two more unanswered goals, but they ran out of time as the Bulls defended home turf, winning 12-9. They advance to the Class B Championship which will take place at Stony Brook University, Saturday at 10:00a.m. where they will take on West Islip High School for a chance to move on to the Long Island Championship.

“We’re so excited,” Hughes said. “This whole week we’ve been talking about the last time we were there, and just feeling that feeling as we’re walking out and just knowing we can get back there, and we can change this and we can make history for this program.”

Is This Real, New York?

By PJ Balzer Someone please pinch New York and wake us up. Is this really happening or just a long dream?

The New York Knicks are the Eastern Conference champs and headed to the NBA finals next week, for the first time in decades.

I’ve personally never been a “die hard” Knicks fan, but I do love the sport of basketball. I grew up with kids who have loved, followed, and suffered with the Knicks through some ups and a lot of downs. These friends bleed blue and orange every single year, no matter how the team is doing. I usually jump on the bandwagon when they are winning.

I jumped on for the Patrick Ewing, John Starks, and Charles Oakley era. I also jumped back on for the Anthony Mason and Latrell Spreewell days. I followed some of Carmello Anthony wearing that New York jersey as well. I jumped off for the many years they were the worst team in basketball.

The Knicks are definitely our team though - New Yorkers’, that is. They reach far past different towns, counties, and even hours Upstate. This week, I’ve chatted with friends from Wyandanch and Brentwood about the Knicks, as well as friends from Eastport and Cold Spring Harbor. I personally don’t think that the Brooklyn Nets have been fully received by us New Yorkers. We don’t necessarily dislike them, but they just can’t be to us what the Knicks are.

The Knicks haven’t appeared in the NBA finals since 1999 when they lost to the San Antonio Sours. They haven’t won an NBA championship since 1973, seven years before I was born – for perspective.

Jalen Brunson was 2 years old in 1999 when the Knicks last played in the finals. OG Anunoby was 1, Josh Hart was 4. Karl-Anthony Towns was 3 and Mikal Bridges was 2. The core group of players were toddlers when the Big Apple last hosted the biggest stage in hoops.

The entire basketball world now turns its focus towards New York City. Basketball, with a sharp incline in international superstars, is now a globally watched sport. As Knicks fans await their opponent, the winner of the Western conference finals, Jalen Brunson and the New York Knickerbockers seek to keep the momentum rolling forward as they are on a historic 11 playoff game win streak, knocking off the Hawks, Sixers, and Cavs all in a very convincing fashion.

This Knicks team has recovered from mid-season injuries, only to click together and peak as a team at just the right time - just what every Knick fan had hoped for.

So, the only question every New Yorker is asking themselves is, is it just the right time for the first NBA title in over 50 years?

Sachem East Sends Top Seed Home

Longwood baseball has been dominant over the past several years. The Lions pride themselves on their youth leagues, team spirit, and unity. All that has resulted in several League 1 championships and a program that’s revered island wide.

Longwood came into this season as the top seed and clear favorite for a Suffolk County title in Class AAA. After a dominant League one performance and record, the county title was a little closer at hand. Until the Lions were pierced by the Sachem East flaming arrows.

Last night number 5 seeded Sachem East upset number 1 seeded Longwood.

Longwood hosted the match because of having the higher seed, yet that didn’t stop Sachem on either side of the plate. What stopped the Lions though was Sachem’s ace pitcher Chris Ragona. Ragona struck out ten batters and kept a Longwood team that usually piles on the runs. At only one run. Sachem closed out the game, winning 3-1.

Sachem will visit Commack next with hopes of advancing to the Class AAA county final game.

NCAA DI Girls Lacrosse Runs Through LI

By Ashley Pavlakis I will never get tired of seeing Long Island-born athletes do well at the collegiate level. I’m especially proud to see 27 Division I women’s lacrosse players on the rosters of all four teams competing in the Final Four of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship. As I’ve casually mentioned previously, the women’s lacrosse pipeline on Long Island runs deep.

Johns Hopkins University versus Northwestern University and the University of Maryland versus the University of North Carolina were the two semifinal round matchups that took place on Friday in Evanston, Illinois. The NCAA championship was on Sunday, where the University of North Carolina Tar Heels met the Northwestern University Huskies. Northwestern avenged its 2025 title loss to Carolina, winning the 2026 title by the score of 14-11 on its home turf.

Johns Hopkins (17-5-0): Taylor Hoss (West Sayville), Emma Haugen (Dix Hills), Samantha DiCarlo (Port Jefferson), Ashley Langdon (Mastic), Molly Hiney (Shoreham), and Lacey Downey (Babylon).

Northwestern (19-3-0): Abby LoCascio (Lindenhurst), Jenna Soto (Nesconset), Sienna Connolly (Rockville Center), Jenika Cuocco (Sound Beach), Madison Taylor (Wantagh), and Kyle Finnell (Garden City).

Semifinal matchup number one: Northwestern (1) v. Johns Hopkins (4). Madison Taylor is a force to be reckoned with at Northwestern as she’s scored 92g-32a-124pts this season. In addition, Jenna Soto (8g-7a-15pts) and Abby LoCascio (7g-6a-13pts) have contributed to the Huskies offense in 2026. At Johns Hopkins, Lacey Downey is second in scoring, recording 57g-46a-103pts. Right below her is Taylor Hoss, with 45g-57a-102pts. Samantha DiCarlo is up there as well, scoring 18g-4a-22pts.

Taylor Hoss scored the game-winning goal for Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinal round against none other than Stony Brook University. Both Hoss and Downey scored hat-tricks in the 13-12 win. On Friday night versus Northwestern, Hoss scored twice, and DiCarlo scored once in the 16-11 loss to the Huskies. Madison Taylor scored four to help send Northwestern to the national championship game.

Maryland (18-4-0): Kristen Shanahan (Holbrook), Kayla Gilmore (Mastic), Ryan Reynolds (Cold Spring Harbor), Ava Meyn (Bayport), Sawyer Scarola (Huntington), Lyla Ingrilli (Wantagh), Kylie Lamoureux (Rocky Point), and Caitlin Boden (Merrick).

North Carolina (19-2-0): Tessa Calabria (Huntington), Charlotte Rathjen (Rockville Center), Reese King (East Quogue), Eva Ingrilli (Wantagh), GraceAnn Leonard (Shoreham), Ella Cabrera (Northport), and Lexie Zenk (Riverhead).

Semifinal matchup number two: Maryland (3) v. North Carolina (2) was a meeting of the sisters as Lyla (Terps) and Eva (Tar Heels) faced off in the tournament’s semifinal round. The Ingrilli sisters hail from Wantagh. Eva, a senior attacker, is the older sibling, while Lyla is a freshman defender. For the Terrapins, Kristen Shanahan is second in team scoring with 40g-34a-74pts. Kayla Gilmore is up on the list as well, notching 13g-5a-18pts. Repping the baby blue for UNC, Eva Ingrilli has 12g-5a-17pts, and Reese King has eight assists.

Kristen Shanahan and Kayla Gilmore scored two goals apiece in their 14-10 quarterfinal win over Navy. In Friday’s match against UNC, Shanahan scored twice for Maryland. Reese King scored twice for UNC in their 16-6 win to advance to the national championship.

In the National Championship game, Eva Ingrilli scored two for UNC. Madison Taylor scored one and tacked on six assists for NU en route to the title. Madison Taylor finished the tournament with 4gp-17g-11a-28pts and was recently named a top-five finalist for the coveted Tewaaraton Award. Goalkeeper Jenika Cuocco was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Huskies.

The Division I women’s lacrosse season has come and gone. What shaped up to be an exciting season for many Long Island natives has now crowned six as 2026 National Champions. Congratulations to Northwestern, UNC, Maryland, and Johns Hopkins on an exciting final four run!

Pal-O-Mine Set to Celebrate 30 Years

By Madison Warren The Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Center in Islandia is having its biggest and best year yet.

This non-profit therapeutic horse program just celebrated its thirtieth anniversary, having first opened its barn doors in 1995. Specializing in equine therapy tailored to individuals with disabilities, survivors of trauma, Veterans, and first responders, Pal-O-Mine carries a unique mission: to help its students grow, learn, and

heal throughout life.

Today, it stands as one of Long Island’s most prominent equine-assisted programs, continuing to change lives through the powerful bond between humans and horses.

Lisa Gatti, founder and CEO of Pal-OMine, was inspired to start the organization after receiving a book from her father while in college. The story followed a young girl whose life was changed by a devastating accident that left her in a wheelchair.

Through the love and connection between people and horses, the girl discovered a renewed sense of purpose. From that moment, Lisa knew the path she wanted to take — and she has never looked back.

Fast forward to the present day, and PalO-Mine has grown into a thriving foundation spanning 13 acres across four properties.

The property is home to 25 working horses, as well as miniature horses, donkeys, chickens, and sheep. With the support of more than 85 dedicated volunteers, Pal-OMine has positively impacted the lives of over 15,000 participants.

Although horse therapy is the heartbeat of the organization, there is much more to Pal-O-Mine. For those who feel that equine therapy may not be for them, the organization offers a variety of other programs. These include traditional riding

lessons, Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL), Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), speech and occupational therapy, the Job Security Through Equine Partnership (J-STEP) vocational program, specialized services for military members and first responders, corporate leadership training, welding classes, horticulture classes, yoga, and wellness experiences.

Pal-O-Mine also offers unique events designed to serve a wide range of groups.

Weekend-long retreats for military personnel, Veterans, and others are a regular part of their programming. These

retreats often incorporate self-care activities, horse therapy, and additional wellness experiences, with participants staying on the property in Pal-O-Mine’s residential house.

In addition to retreats, Pal-O-Mine hosts annual fairs and festivals, many of which are open to the public. Their upcoming Open House and Fall Festival on October 13 will feature farm tours, crafts, scavenger hunts, horsemanship demonstrations, raffles, and more. Later in the month, on October 19, they will hold their VetFest and NYPD Fundraiser, further highlighting their strong ties to the community. To close out the year, PalO-Mine will host its annual Winter Wonderland in December, complete with holiday treats, a walk-through light show, and the chance to take photos with Santa.

The property is full of spaces designed for both participants and animals to enjoy. A large, accessible playground is available for children, and during equine therapy lessons, horses will even drop participants off there at the end of a ride. Pal-O-Mine also features a unique “horse playground,” complete with obstacle courses that both riders and horses can navigate together, adding fun, variety, and challenge to the experience.

The garden and greenhouse on the property are integral to Pal-O-Mine’s vocational program. Here, young adults with disabilities cultivate flowers, vegetables, herbs, and fruits, gaining hands-on experience and practical life skills.

Participants harvest their own produce and transform it into items such as soaps, decorations, and other handmade goods.

Some of these products, including fresh flowers, are even sold to local shops across Long Island, giving participants both pride in their work and real-world job training opportunities.

Beyond the expansion of programs and facilities over the years, Pal-O-Mine has been accomplished by the strength and generosity of the community. Countless donations and grants have supported the organization, recognizing the hard work that Lisa Gatti and her team continue to put into making a difference on Long Island.

Recently, Pal-O-Mine received an $8,000 grant from Suffolk County, presented by County Executive Ed Romaine (R-Center Moriches). The funding, made possible through proceeds from the 2024 Suffolk County Marathon, will be used to enhance programs specifically designed for veterans and their families.

The opportunities at Pal-O-Mine are endless. As Pal-OMine celebrates 30 years of service, its mission remains as strong as ever: to foster healing, growth, and connection through the powerful bond between humans and horses.

With continued community support, dedicated staff and volunteers, and an ever-expanding range of programs, the organization is poised to make an even greater impact in the decades to come. Pal-O-Mine stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished when compassion, vision, and community come together.
