BEEZZ--ness BEEZZ of Bees!

Evan Ely finished 8th grade this year, but was looking ahead to what type of hobby he might enjoy. The first step was to build a unit that would contain the bee hives.

When Evan Ely received the 2026 Youth Beekeeping scholarship earlier this year from the Iowa Honey Producers Association, it wasn’t a one-time project for him. It was the beginning of a new hobby, and potentially a business.

“I wanted a hobby to do, to do something fun,” said 13 year old Evan Ely, who is finished his 8th grade year at the Webster City middle school. “Wasps are no fun, but bees are fun.”

“He already has a vision: he formed EEz BEEz LLC, plans to manage his own bee farm, and market the honey and by-products himself,” said his father, Scott Ely. “Adding this to our family’s farm—which already includes walnut trees and orchard work—ties into the broader story of how young farmers are diversifying and innovating in agriculture.”

Evan was notified early in the year that he had been accepted into the 2026 Iowa Honey Producers Association (IHPA) Youth Beekeeping Scholarship Program. This is a selective initiative that supports young people who want to gain hands-on experience raising bees, managing hives, and marketing honey.

Local bee keeper Ken Malaise has been helping Evan learn about taking care of bees.

“He invited me over to his house and he untapped some hives and removed the honey,” said Evan. “He’s my mentor for beekeeping. The scholarship lets you bring in a mentor, and we decided we would like him to be my mentor.”

Malaise has invited the family to see his beekeeping operation, and he has helped him set up his hives and transfer the bees. His support and information is essential to the first years of operation.

“I’m just learning all the skills, and managing the hives,” said Evan. “My dad, he’ll do most of the business stuff, my job is to keep them alive.”

With four years of high school ahead of him, there is a lot of time to get the bees and honey business established.

The bees under Evan’s care are critical to helping keep pollinators healthy, assisting with the natural infrastructure in Iowa.

The Iowa Honey Producers Association are bringing opportunities to young people who can look forward to future generations of a healthy environment created when all things are in balance.

The program is designed to support young people who want to gain hands-on experience raising bees, managing hives and marketing honey.

• The Iowa Honey Producers Association (IHPA) is a nonprofit organization that has been active since 1912, working to bring beekeepers in Iowa together, promote good practices, and educate the public about the value of honey bees in pollination and agriculture.

• Their Youth Scholarship Program is open to youth ages 13 to 16 and they must go through an application process, obtain recommendation letters and be interviewed before acceptance.

With the help of Malaise, the more than 20,000 bees and their queen are doing their best to help make the bees and their honey another Iowa farm enterprise.

Ken Malaise has worked with bees for many years, and is pretty fearless.

words to live by Washington’s Farewell: The Founding Father’s Warning to Future Generations

As I continue to focus on books of American history during this year of the nation’s 250th birthday, I went in search of something featuring our Founding Father, George Washington. We owe so much to the general who led us to victory in the Revolutionary War, and then set us on a path of democracy as our first president — and yet we don’t find a lot about him today.

Avlon wastes no time in distinguishing Washington’s Farewell Address from the vast majority of political speeches, even yet today. Usually, political speeches are full of promises, lower taxes, cheaper health care, we’ve all heard them. But Washington made no promises in his farewell, he offered caution. He told what not to do if we wanted this Republic to survive and prosper.

Published in 2017 by Simon and Schuster, ‘Washington’s Farewell: The Founding Father’s Warning to Future Generations’ by John Avlon is a timely read as we prepare to celebrate our semiquincentennial. (And we thought bicentennial was a mouthful 50 years ago.)

I have to admit, early on in this book, I had trouble giving credence to any advice from a man who owned slaves. How’s this for advice to a new nation: don’t allow slavery. That can rip a nation apart, and it did, and we are still suffering as a result, because one man’s suffering is a cancer upon us all.

As the title indicates, Avlon focuses this brisk, but indepth, read on Washington’s final farewell. Washington had more than one farewell. A farmer at heart, he was always trying to get back to his beloved Mount Vernon.

But whether it be on the battlefield, or the “President’s House” in Philadelphia, he never failed to answer the call to serve when the budding young nation needed him.

Recitation and memorization were important building blocks in early American education, and Washington’s Farewell Address was once considered so important that school children learned it well.

But I am also a firm believer in judging people according to their times, not our times. After all, if we look hard enough, our times have sins enough of their own. In addition, there are many indications that Washington was no fan of slavery.

The best evidence is the fact that in his will he ordered that all of his slaves be freed after the death of his wife, Martha. She didn’t wait that long, she freed them not long after Washington’s death. Some historians note that she may have feared for her life if those enslaved people knew their freedom was contingent upon her

death. That being said, the majority of enslaved people at Mount Vernon were there as part of the estate of Mrs. Washington’s first husband. Neither George nor Martha Washington could set them free, according to the dictates of her first husband’s will.

But what cautions from 250 years ago would have relevance yet today? Washington could not have imagined the challenges and dilemmas we would face today. And yet the root causes of these new challenges are not all that different from Washington’s time.

“Avoid foreign entanglements,” Washington urged.

That’s a tough one. What if the “Greatest Generation’ had avoided World War II? Sadly, there were those in the late 1930s and very early 1940s who used Washington’s words as part of the America First Committee. An infamous meeting of this group at Madison Square Garden featured posters of Washington as the ‘first Nazi.’ It is easy to distort words when taken in small groups, one must look at the whole of what is said. To distort Washington in such a way is horrendous.

Yet another urging of Washington was to avoid excessive debt. Oh, boy, what would he say today. But we need to look deeper at Washington’s life. As Avlon shows readers, Washington was a man who believed in being self-sufficient. Rather than being enriched personally after eight years as president, Washington was nearly broke. He left his farm to serve, and it suffered greatly in his absence. But he did not give up, and went back to work rebuilding Mount Vernon as a successful venture.

We are blessed with so many resources as a nation, and I think we can be more self-sufficient, as Washington urged. We can work on that.

Yet another urging from Washington was to curb partisanship. He was so right. We cannot have our own way all the time. Our leaders need to remember how to compromise, and we must support them when they do. And they need to work for us, not their party.

I can think of a great, and very simple place to start working together: the Congressional Baseball Game.

Several years ago, there was a shooting at the game.

It was easy to target one particular party because the two parties battled each other. Let’s stop playing Democrats versus Republicans, at least on the baseball diamond, and maybe everywhere. Let’s draw states out of a hat and make this a truly bipartisan event. They need a coach like Herb Brooks from the 1980 Miracle on Ice to make a team out of them. We are, after all, on the same team as Americans.

If Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neill can share a beer, can’t we all play baseball together? For the sake of our future, we need to start playing together, and then perhaps we can work better together.

It’s our nation. Although we are not perfect, I believe Washington would be proud of our nation today. He might just be amazed that we are still practicing this thing called democracy 250 years hence. He never told us it would be easy, he just said to keep working at it.

Let’s do that — together.

He was not afraid to change his ways. He gave up tobacco farming and focused on wheat production.

He sold high quality flour and rye whiskey. He began to fish the Potomac River that bordered Mount Vernon and sold shad and herring as far as the Caribbean, according to Avlon. Any fish left over were used as fertilizer for his cropland.

Yep, our nation has horrible debt, but I think we can learn from Washington and change our ways. I have great hope for our nation. We come from people who left everything behind to start a new life, a new nation.

We can never be without hope in this land of plenty.

Home cooks who want to expand their culinary repertoires with some particularly notable flavor can look to Cajun food and its distinct dishes to accomplish that goal. If that sounds like an exciting night in the kitchen, try this recipe for “Jambalaya With Sausage and Shrimp” from Lines+Angles.

Jambalaya With Sausage and Shrimp

Makes 4 servings

1 tablespoon vegetable oil 8 ounces chorizo or andouille sausage, sliced into 1⁄4-inch rounds 1 lb. large raw shell-on shrimp 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 rib of celery, rinsed, trimmed and finely chopped 1 small red bell pepper, rinsed; trimmed, seeded, and diced 1 small green bell pepper, rinsed, trimmed, seeded, and diced 4 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced 11⁄2 cups long grain white rice, rinsed 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, minced 14 ounces canned diced tomatoes, drained, juice reserved 4 cups clam juice 1 bay leaf Fresh parsley, rinsed and chopped (for garnish) 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Adjust oven rack to middle position.

2. In a deep cast iron skillet or Dutch oven, set over medium-high heat, heat oil until shimmering, but not smoking. Add sausage and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until browned.

Remove sausage from pan using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Add shrimp to the pan and cook until the shells are browned on both sides, about 1 minute per side. Transfer shrimp to a large bowl and refrigerate.

3. Add onion, celery, peppers, and garlic to the pan. Reduce heat to medium, and cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables have softened, about 7 to 10 minutes. Add rice, tomato paste, salt, and thyme; cook until rice is completely coated with oil, about 2 minutes.

4. Stir in the tomatoes, 1⁄4 cup reserved tomato juice, clam juice, bay leaf, and sausage. Place a piece of aluminum foil directly on rice. Bring to a boil, cover pan, transfer to oven and bake for about 18 to 20 minutes, or until the rice is almost tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.

5. Meanwhile, remove the shrimp from the refrigerator; peel and clean, discarding the shells. Remove pan from oven, uncover and remove aluminum foil. Gently stir in the peeled shrimp. Lay the foil back down over the surface of the rice and cover with lid, return to oven, and cook until the rice is tender, all the liquid is absorbed and the shrimp is cooked through, about 5 minutes.

6. Remove pan from oven, uncover, remove foil and bay leaf. Sprinkle with chopped parsley.

Divide between bowls. Serve.

How to Use AI Safely and Protect Yourself from Scams Dear Savvy Senior, I keep hearing about AI in the news and how it’s being used in scams.

I’m not very tech savvy and find it confusing. What should I know to protect myself?

Dear Cautious, You’re not alone. Many older adults are asking the same question. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is becoming part of everyday life, from smartphones and internet searches to banking and customer service. It’s also making scams more convincing and harder to spot, which is why a basic understanding helps. The good news is you don’t need to be a tech expert to use AI safely and with confidence.

Know the basics AI is technology that can create and analyze information in ways that seem human. It can write emails, answer questions, recommend products, generate images and even mimic voices. While this can be helpful, it also means things you see or hear online may not always be accurate. If something seems unusual or too good to be true, take a closer look.

Use it wisely A good way to get comfortable with AI is to start small. Many smartphones include voice assistants like Siri or Google Assistant that can set reminders, check the weather or answer questions. You can also try tools like ChatGPT or Claude to explain a news story, suggest recipes or help draft a message.

AI can also be useful for everyday tasks like comparing products, planning trips or organizing a to-do list. Think of it as a helpful assistant, not a decision-maker.

Keep in mind that AI isn’t perfect. It can give answers that sound confident but may be outdated or incorrect. For important matters like your health, finances or legal issues, always double-check with a trusted source such as your doctor, bank or a government website.

Watch for scams Scammers are using AI to make their schemes more convincing. You may receive an email that appears to be from your bank or Medicare or a phone call that sounds like a family member. Be especially wary of urgent messages that pressure you to act quickly or warn that your account will be closed.

Protect yourself The most important habit for avoiding scams is to slow down. If you receive a suspicious call, text

or email, stop and assess the message. Don’t click links, download attachments or respond right away.

Instead, contact the company or person directly using a phone number or website you trust – not the one provided in the message.

Scammers now use AI to mimic voices and write convincing messages. Even if something sounds like it’s from a family member, friend or company, verify it another way before taking action.

Never share sensitive information like your Social Security number, bank details or passwords unless you initiated the contact and trust the source. Banks and government agencies, including Medicare and Social Security, will not ask for this information by phone or email. Urgent requests for payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency are also red flags.

For added protection, use two-factor authentication, and keep your devices updated. You can even consider call-blocking services from your mobile service provider.

If something doesn’t look right, take time to check it or ask a trusted friend or family member before responding.

Keep learning Technology is always changing, but there are ways to stay informed. Many libraries and senior centers offer free classes on digital skills and online safety. Trusted resources like AARP’s Fraud Watch Network (aarp. org/fraudwatch) and the Federal Trade Commission (consumer.ftc.gov) also provide up-to-date scam alerts and protection tips. In addition, internet and mobile provider Cox Mobile (cox.com/mobilesafety) offers a library of research, tips and online safety tools to keep you informed and secure online.

AI may seem complicated at first, but a little awareness goes a long way. By staying cautious and building a few smart habits, you can protect yourself and make this technology work for you.
