Bobcats out to make ground gains By ROSS THEDE TIMES-REPUBLICAN

The Marshalltown football team added nearly 80 yards per game on the ground last season in its second rendition of running the flexbone offense, but the monumental jump only gained the Bobcats one more win on the ledger. Head coach Adam Goodvin is hoping what they say about Year 3 is right. Marshalltown’s rushing attack tallied 245.1 yards per game last season thanks to its system-wide installation and execution of the flexbone, but the Bobcats’ final record of 3-6 was only a one-game improvement from the first year in the new scheme. MHS graduated 21 seniors but

brings back 21 letterwinners in hopes of making another leap forward thanks to its run-first attack popularized by college football’s service academies. “Year 3 is when everyone says it’s supposed to really click, so we’ll see,” said Goodvin, beginning his 10th season at the helm. “We’re seeing things on film now daily where we’ve got to clean it up, but hopefully the things we’ve got to clean up can be fixed a lot quicker now versus how they were a couple years ago. “The younger guys have got some experience running this (offense) and, like the older guys, they start understanding the big picture a heck of a lot sooner rather than later.” Marshalltown finished sixth out of 36 teams in Class 5A with

2,206 rushing yards last season, and a bulk of those return to the backfield. Quarterback Jamison Niehouse rushed for 829 yards and eight touchdowns, while running back Tyler Englund got 820 yards and four scores a season ago. Now seniors, the onus is on them to make the most out of the triple option-based offense and lead the team around them into the end zone. “Those two obviously are going to play a big role for us again this year,” Goodvin said. “I think their total understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish on offense has come a long way. They’re seeing the big picture.” Niehouse saw some snaps as a sophomore before taking the reins of the run-heavy scheme last sea-

son, and the flexbone fed into his strengths as a ball carrier. Coupled with Englund’s speed as well, the Bobcats’ backfield has the potential to erupt again. “Jamison’s a smart kid, he picked up on it pretty quick and then the big concepts came pretty easy,” Goodvin said. “Then it’s just really honing in on the minor details and the fundamentals and all the little techniques that come with playing that. He’s come a long way. He was inconsistent with some footwork early on, but that was expected. And now he’s out there helping our younger guys with some of those little details. “Same goes for Tyler at B-back. He’s marking steps and letting the younger guys know when they’re off track a little bit and guys are doing the same for him, too. It’s

been fun to see.” Auditing each other in the minutiae of the flexbone offense is something Goodvin preaches as teammates help each other improve with each repetition in practice. “The little things can throw you off a ton — it can be the difference between a two-yard gain and a touchdown,” he said. “Those little details do matter, and I think communicating that between the guys is extremely important.” As will be the offensive line play in front of them. The Bobcats graduated four starters from last year’s front but bring back two with considerable varsity experience and others with time on the line in junior varsity play. BOBCATS | 13

Trojans touting basics behind new line By ROSS THEDE TIMES-REPUBLICAN

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall team is prepared to do it with defense — at least until the offense catches up. The Trojans bring back more defense than offense from last year’s Class 1A District 7 champion squad in hopes of extending its eight-year playoff streak. West Marshall went 7-3 overall and 4-1 to win its district title on a tiebreaker before bowing out in the second round. If the preseason rankings are right, the Trojans are poised to be in the mix again this season. Head coach Cody Hackett has 11 letterwinners back for this fall’s foray into 1A football, where last season West Marshall’s offense was a bit of a juggernaut. Kinnick Geers scored 18 of the team’s 43 touchdowns, Wyatt Brown got 11 more, and both big-play-makers are gone to graduation. In addition to averaging 31.0 points per game, ranking ninth out of 48 teams in 1A, the Trojans allowed just 15.2 points per contest — good for seventh in the class. West Marshall’s chances of getting back into the playoffs will hinge on how well its defense will play while the offense finds its footing. “We’ll get better offensively, but our strength I truly believe will be our defense,” said Hackett, “and our kicking game.”

West Marshall’s defense allowed no more than 28 points in a game until the team was eliminated by Underwood in the Round of 16, 42-21. The Trojans gave up eight points or fewer in six of their seven wins, proving their ability to lean on their defense. Senior quarterback Blayk Hart

returns to captain the offense, but the playmakers around him will be relatively new to the spotlight. “He’s getting more familiar with the offense, with his reads, and he’s just an overall tough, physical player,” Hackett said of his signal-caller. “I’m excited for him. I expect to have a big year

out of him. He does a nice job with the young guys in the backfield, getting them in the right positions as a leader and making sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to do for our plays to be successful.” The Trojans ranked fourth in the state in rushing offense last fall

with 2,490 yards on the ground, and they were third in rushing yards per game (276.7). Hart, the team’s leading rusher, got 1,001 of those on his own in addition to completing 63-of-134 passes for 1,345 yards and 11 touchdowns. Only 92 of those rushing yards TROJANS | 5

return around Hart, however, and the offensive line is almost entirely new, too. The Trojans will turn to a cast of players to pick up the slack offensively, including the likes of sophomore Turner DeRossett, juniors Drake Whitaker and Teegun Edler, and senior Connor Yakel. Senior Beckham DeSotel moves inward from tight end to join the offensive line, with seniors Bryce Crawford and Jacob Dare and juniors Jacoby Honeck and Damian Ficken aligning next to him. Senior Alex Corson and junior Kyle Hilleman have been fighting to find time up front as well. “We’ve just got to continue to work and improve day by day, play by play, and that’s what I tell the guys,” Hackett said. “Let’s move on to the next play, let’s get better in the next play, let’s get better each rep(etition). “A lot of them haven’t played a lot, but we’re just getting them up to date, getting them to play fast and not think as much. We kind of went back to the basics to help them do that.” The Trojan defense will be led by its three top tacklers from a year ago in linebackers Joe Kielman, a sophomore, and junior Dalton Eldridge. Both made 70.5 tackles a year ago, totalling 28.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks. Drake Whitaker, a junior, brings back 41.5 stops in a linebacker/strong safey role. “We’re going back to our 3-5 (because) we just don’t have the size that we had before,” Hackett said. “We’ve got more speed up front.” DeSotel, Crawford and

Times-Republican | Marshalltown, Iowa | Friday, August, 28, 2026 | Gridiron Glory 2026 | 5 Dare will lead the defense up front, while DeRossett and Yakel will join in as linebackers. Wilson Buckley, Waylon Mumm and Edler will draw assignments in the defensive backfield along with Whitaker. Hackett also thinks a lot of Buckley as his placekicker and DeSotel as the team’s punter, pinpointing the Trojans’ kicking game as a strength going into this season. “Wilson Buckley’s our returning kicker and he can probably put it into the end zone or down inside the 10 consistently,” Hackett said, “and that’s huge to start your opponents at their 20 and force them to have to move the sticks and play another four downs before they get down the field. He can put it through the field goal post as well. He’s consistent from 35, 40 yards out — he can do it. And Beckham can boot a ball.” Buckley ranked fifth in Class 1A with 13 touchbacks on 48 tries last season, was 6-of-8 on point-after kicks and 5-of-7 on field-goal attempts. DeSotel ranked second in Class 1A with a 42.9 yards-per-punt average. West Marshall’s only district loss last season came to Pleasantville, which is ranked fourth in the preseason by the Cedar Rapids Gazette. The Trojans, polled fifth, went on to win their

final three contests, including a 43-0 blowout of Interstate 35 that all but wrapped up the district crown. Hackett expects the same three teams to contend for the District 7 title again this fall. “I would say the team to beat in our district right now would be Pleasantville,” he said. “They’ll be tough, they’ve got a lot of returners coming back, so I’m looking forward to playing them. “I would think that we probably have a target on our back having won the district last year, so I’m sure everybody will come with their best effort against us. I think I-35 will be tough as well. It’ll be a tough district.” The Trojans open with a home game against preseason No. 3 South Hardin before visiting New Hampton and Roland-Story to complete non-district action. Three of West Marshall’s five district contests will be on its home field this year. “Our expectation is to win,” Hackett said. “If you didn’t have that mentality, I don’t know why I’d be coaching or you’d be playing football. There’s a score on the scoreboard and our job is to have more points than our opponents. “We’re on an eight-year playoff run, so we’re just looking to continue that streak, but it’s got to start one game at a time.”

Ironman Mustangs low on numbers Fresh off first playoff berth in 23 years, East Marshall dealing with roster attrition By ROSS THEDE TIMES-REPUBLICAN

LE GRAND — The East Marshall football team was one of the top passing threats in all of Class A and just balanced enough to keep opposing defenses honest. With most of its offensive line gone from a year ago, the Mustangs will have to hook into a new herd of pullers in hopes of getting to the playoffs again. East Marshall ended a 22-year playoff drought last fall, finding its way to fourth place in Class A’s District 4 to make it to state for the first time since 1992. A first-round exit against eventual finalist St. Ansgar didn’t hurt as bad as graduation did, and the Mustangs (5-4) were left with quite a few holes to fill. Head coach Greg Lee believes he’s got the guys to do it, but it’s going to demand more of his Mustangs than before. “I’m telling them we’ve got to be in great shape, you’ve got to be in better shape than last year because you’ll be playing both ways without a lot of breaks,” Lee said. “So that’s on us, to make sure they’re mentally ready and physically ready to handle four quarters without getting many breaks.” East Marshall opened practice with just 23 players on its roster after graduating two of its top receivers and two starting lineman, including All-District Defensive Line MVP Wyatt Stalzer. Two more starting

offensive linemen from last year’s squad didn’t go out for football, so the Mustangs have had to move their depth chart around to fill spots up front. “We have Braxton Fisher coming back as our starting center, and then we’re

kind of filling our line from there,” said Lee. “Braxton’s a senior, he’s got lots of experience and he’s a good-sized kid, so he’ll play both ways for us.” Fisher stands in as the Mustangs’ biggest cog up front at 6-foot-3, 280

pounds. Juniors Deagan Madison (5-8, 179), Landon Miller (6-6, 215) and Kaedyn Arredondo (6-0, 205) and sophomore Cael Drury (6-0, 250) will be the newcomers up front for the varsity squad. “Our biggest challenge

is going to be building up some stamina so kids can go both ways on our offensive and defensive lines,” Lee said. “Although I’m very confident in them, we’re not very deep and we don’t have a lot of varsity experience. Fortunately last year

we had good numbers to where they got a lot of reps against our first team and they got a full JV schedule, so we kinda feel like they got some varsity experience going up against our varsity last year.” MUSTANGS | 7

Most of East Marshall’s returning minutes are represented by its skill position players, including quarterback Jaxson Boswell. The 6-foot senior threw for for 1,357 yards and nine touchdowns last season as the Mustangs ranked 10th in Class A in passing offense. Two of Boswell’s top three targets graduated in Blake Neuroth (37 receptions, 542 yards, 4 touchdowns) and Cody Weaver (23-283-2), but fellow senior Eli Burns (32-476-4) is back. Burns was a firstteam all-district pick as a kicker, while Boswell was a second-team quarterback. Lee believes senior Austin Crandon and junior Gavin Gaschler will throw their respective hats into the ring as receivers, along with sophomore Trent Criswell. “We have five seniors, and Jackson Boswell and Eli Burns all summer have been the leaders in the weight room,” Lee said. “They’ve been the leaders in their class and they led a lot last year in football and in other sports. They’re two hard-working, good kids, so it’s really nice to have them back, and in my opinion they’re two of the best at their positions in the area, especially in Class A.

“We’re putting a lot on them, but they’re the kind of kids that love it. They expect it, they appreciate it, and they get kind of mad if you don’t put it on them. It’s a lot easier when you’ve got leaders that want to be leaders and they are.” Kaden Grant is a junior who took a bulk of the handoffs last year, rushing for 451 yards and six touchdowns, but a newly assembled offensive line my need time to find its footing for the Mustangs this fall. “The kids we have out, although our numbers are down, are a really solid group,” Lee said. “We’re off to a good start with attitude and effort and attendance. No one gets to decide how their season goes other than themselves. “We’re really thin, obviously, but we feel like we can pick up where we left off last year, but it’s going to be a challenge.” East Marshall’s 2025 campaign kicked off with

a pair of non-district victories over BCLUW and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, propelling the Mustangs into District 4 action. Consecutive losses by two scores or less delayed East Marshall’s drive toward the state playoffs, but the Mustangs found their momentum again and got into the first round of the postseason. This year’s schedule will again be a gauntet in district play, led by district champion Wapsie Valley — a state semifinalist — and quarterfinalist North Linn. Maquoketa Valley won its first-round playoff game as well. “Last year it ended up being the best district in the state,” Lee said. “In the preseason rankings there’s three teams in our district ... but we still feel like we’re a playoff qualifying-type team. Things go our way when we work hard and play well.”

Rebels carried forward by tradition, expectation By ROSS THEDE TIMES-REPUBLICAN

REINBECK — The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s annual football record book missed a year that Gladbrook-Reinbeck qualified for the playoffs. Let’s be honest: it’s hard to keep count. The Rebels reached the state football playoffs last fall for the 16th year in a row, advancing to the UNI-Dome for the second straight season before a 38-30 loss to Woodbine in the 8-Man semifinals. Graduation claimed G-R’s starting quarterback and leading receiver, but the Rebels expect to meet their high standard again this fall just the same. Gladbrook-Reinbeck has made the playoffs in each of its eight years in 8-Man, but you won’t hear head coach John Olson preaching postseason-or-bust in practice. “Honestly we don’t talk about it, we just talk about the right now and stay focused on the process,” he said. “I’m sure it gets brought up by the players and I’m sure I’ll start at some point in time saying ‘I can’t wait until maybe we have a chance to go to the Dome,’ but it’s definitely not something we focus on. “Right now, let’s just get stronger and more athletic and let’s be good at basketball and when we’re done with that soccer or track, and then hopefully we play 13 games of some sort this season. We want football to be something that

when they’re done with practice, they say ‘that was a tough practice, but I can’t wait for tomorrow.’” Year over year, the Rebels have done it with defense. Gladbrook-Reinbeck led the state in defensive scoring average a sea-

son ago, allowing just 11.42 points per game on the way to an 11-1 record. G-R hasn’t lost more than three games since 2012, and even that season it made the playoffs. “We love defense,” Olson said. “We just try to make it really sim-

ple. We feel like our 3-2 zone defense is something that can work against pretty much anything. It doesn’t mean it’s going to stop everything, but it’s gonna work against pretty much anything. “It’s kind of one size fits all.

Good Luck Rebels!

We’re not overly aggressive in blitzing people, but we just want to read and react and play fast. We feel like we can be a top-10 defense every year in the scoring category REBELS | 9

and that’s kinda what matters the most.” And while the Rebels have holes to fill from a year ago, they believe they can, and a 16-year playoff streak should be an indication that they will. Senior speedster Treyvon Herron returns as G-R’s home run threat a year after rushing for 1,278 yards and 26 touchdowns while also hauling in 19 passes for 254 yards and five scores. He averaged 13 yards per touch, and the 5-foot-9 tailback will touch the ball a lot again. Herron was voted the Offensive MVP in 8-Man District 6 last season. The Rebels will turn to junior Bennett Sieh at quarterback, while juniors Chad Gutknecht, Kooper Larsen and Laken Thesing look to haul in his passes. Brayton Dripps, a sophomore, will serve as the backup QB, and Brayden Utter will get a good look on the offense after having just two carries out of the backfield last year. S Cole Gramer, a senior, is the only returner on the offensive line, but G-R has worked on developing depth across the lineup and will fill out the rest of the spots depending on how the puzzle fits together. “Lane Bell, Tommy Farley, Elliott Coster can play center, and the other guard will be either Joshua Utterback or Mason Heise,” Olson said. “The good thing we’ve got going on with all those guys is that they’re all pretty good football players and we’re just trying to figure out what matches. They’re all pretty solid. “They don’t have a ton of experience, and not necessarily experience of knowing how to block a Wood-

He had 22 stops a year ago and is the standard for G-R’s defensive front. “He’s tough, he’s been lifting weights real hard for 2-3 years and he’s been a good leader,” Olson said. “He doesn’t speak a whole lot, he’s pretty quiet when the game’s going on, but he’s a leader by example and pretty much works himself to exhaustion the whole time.” The defensive backfield will see a lot of new faces for G-R outside of Gutknecht, a first-team all-district cornerback who had 56 tackles, two pass deflections, one interception and one forced fumble. Karson Van Heiden, Thesing, Larsen and Dripps all have limited varsity experience but have played a lot of football, Olson said. Mason Heise, Devin Boldt, Sieh and Bell will garner snaps on the defensive line, while Utter will serve

as the team’s placekicker a year after going 70-for-79 on point-after kicks. “We’re not necessarily a bunch of Division I guys running around, but we’re three- or four-deep everywhere,” Olson said, “even though we have the least amount of players (28) we’ve had on a team in a long time. “We’re not real big, we’ve got three guys listed over 200 pounds so it’s gonna be tough moving the big dudes, but we’ll figure out a different way to manipulate that situation.” Gladbrook-Reinbeck claimed last year’s district title with a 6-0 mark, winning by an average of 55.3 points in league play. The Rebels — ranked No. 5 by the Cedar Rapids Gazette — open the season with a non-district tilt at Janesville and mix in a showdown with perennial power Don Bosco in Week 5. “Now that we can’t play Grundy Center anymore, we just want to play Don Bosco,” Olson said. “We know that we have been fairly successful and they have been pretty successful and we also know that on a piece of paper our district is something that maybe we can be pretty successful in, so we try to play each other. “There aren’t a lot of teams that want to play against Don Bosco and there aren’t a ton that want to play against G-R.”

BCLUW football rebuilding up front

B

By ROSS THEDE

( J 2 w s j p

TIMES-REPUBLICAN

CONRAD — The BCLUW football team brings back a lot of experience but lost a lot of its size from last year’s 3-5 campaign, leaving the Comets without any returners to their offensive line. If BCLUW is going to break back into the playoffs for the first time since 2013, it’s going to need a ride from its new stable of horses up front. The Comets closed last season with consecutive wins, carrying some momentum into an offseason that head coach Robert McIntyre wasn’t much a part of in his first fall in Conrad. McIntyre got the job less than a month before the season started, so his first full offseason at BCLUW has been a productive one. “Last year was a quick turnaround, we had three weeks and everything was new,” he said. “So I do think for all the returning players, but especially ones that played significant minutes last year, the familiarity is really going to help out. “We missed that last year, so that’s helped us this year.” The Comets come back for a new season with a lot of familiar faces, including a pair of junior quarterbacks with varsity experience. Elliot McIntyre sustained a broken arm midway through the year, and Maddin Helms took the reins in his place. McIntyre will resume his role as BCLUW’s signal caller this fall, but the benefits of having two experienced quarterbacks isn’t lost on the head coach. “It’s really positive,” coach McIntyre said. “It allows us to get our best 11 guys on the field at the positions that we think they can help the team the most. In some of those cases when you have two guys that are at one position, the one that doesn’t play couldn’t play another position, so to have the versatility is great. “Maddin’s got some special traits — he’s quick, he’s fast, he’s bigger — and that should hopefully create some matchup problems for the teams that we’re playing.”

The BCLUW football team brings back nine letterwinners from a season ago in hopes of making another step forward under second-year head coach Robert McIntyre. Pictured above are, front row: (from left) Elliot McIntyre, Maddin Helms, Jayden Mushnick and Will Feldpausch; back row: Ethan Shadlow, Eathan i Petermeier, Avery Schipper, Marshall Caster and Beau Towne.

Helms will get regular repetitions at wide receiver along with tight end Avery Schipper, who doubled as the team’s top tackler on defense in addition to being its leading receiver (11 receptions, 170 yards, 2 touchdowns) as a sophomore. Shadlow was the team’s second-leading rusher a year ago, going for 405 yards and three touchdowns on 57 carries, while Helms and now-senior Eathan Petermeier were next in line. All the skill position players in the world, however, won’t matter if the Comets can’t move or hold the line up front.

“Our big thing is that we don’t have any starting returning offensive linemen,” said coach McIntyre. “We’ve got some returning skill guys, but our main thing over the last couple of weeks was to find linemen, and the players that are going to play for us on the offensive line this year have been some of our most dedicated players.” Coach McIntyre pointed first to junior Damian Halladay, as the 6-foot-1, 270-pound junior will step in at center. Jordan Schulmeister (5-11, 205), Ivan Conway (5-9, 260) are fellow juniors new to the O-line, alongside sophomore Marshall Caster (5-11, 240) and

senior Beau Towne (6 feet, 172). A “Damian has been incredibly com-b mitted, not only working in the weightw room but just understanding football,”l coach McIntyre said. “Jordan playedv some early on last season defensivelyD ... and Ivan like the other two we wouldB w expect to be a two-way starter. “If we gave a Most Improved Playerf from last year to this year before theL season starts, it goes to Ivan just withe the amount of work that he’s put in andj when you look at his measurables. All three of those (junior) guys did not missm r one lifting session this summer.” t COMETS | 13

Seniors Nathan Sinclair (6-foot-5, 350 pounds) and Jonathan Schaeffer (6-0, 220) both started on the line when they were healthy last season, but bouts with injuries have hampered their playing time. Another senior, John Schoenfelder (6-0, 210), took the offseason to lose some weight for his lead role as a linebacker on the defense, but his strength and toughness have earned him a job up front this fall. A cast of others — Marco Sanchez Juarez (5-8, 235), Holden Rice (6-0, 190), Austin Odom (5-8, 210), Donald Marshall (5-9, 190), Kane Hernandez (5-8, 225) and Hunter Fors (6-1, 215) — will have the opportunity to pave the way for some capable ball carriers in the Bobcats’ backfield. “We’ve got some guys that are good football players that have played other positions but are wanting to help us out in a different role,” Goodvin said. “There’s a lot of guys right there in the mix on both the offensive and defensive line, too. “We’ve got a lot to cover in a short amount of time.” The all-important A-back position in the flexbone will be filled by guys who played other positions last year as well, but Goodvin likes the group he’s got. Drake Gersema, a former B-back, and Zane Moore, a wide receiver, will have the first chances in the slot, with Larrs Schoenfelder, Usher Bollas and Jayden Hted joining the mix. Quinn McLeod, Drewmex Aichy and Gaston Feras will serve as reserves for the B-back spot. MHS threw for just 274

Times-Republican | Marshalltown, Iowa | Friday, August, 28, 2026 | Gridiron Glory 2026 | 13 yards last season, but wide receivers and tight ends still play pivotal roles in the flexbone attack as blockers. Levi Bell, Garrett Thede, Maximus Leger, Bennett Ricken and others will line up wide for the Bobcats this fall. The Bobcats averaged 32.25 points per game through their first four outings last season, but the remaining five games included four opponents who went on to make the 5A state playoffs. MHS totaled just 36 points after starting 3-1, and Goodvin expects the same kind of resistance from the back end of his schedule this year. “We were the only ‘district’ in the state that had four teams qualify for the playoffs a year ago,” Goodvin pointed out, “and that says a lot there. Obviously Dowling reloads every year, they’re the reigning state champs, and then Dallas Center-Grimes returns a lot on the offensive side of the ball. They replace a lot on defense, but I imagine they’ll be talented. “I’d imagine Cedar Rapids Kennedy is gonna be improved. I think they were probably disappointed with how their season went a year ago. Waterloo West lost quite a few kids but we saw their lower levels, and they’ve got some talented kids coming up. “They’re all talented teams in the district and it’ll be tough every week with them.” Marshalltown’s defense surrendered 36.1 points per game last fall, and that number will have to come down to give its ball-control offense a chance to either keep up or eat clock to minimize the damage done by the opposition. John Schoenfelder finished half a tackle off the

leader in last year’s defense, racking up 44.5 stops at the center of the linebacker unit. Niehouse (28) and Moore (19) are linebackers as well, along with Fors, Thede, Larrs Schoenfelder and others. The defensive front like the offensive line was depleted by graduation, so it will be an open competition. “We’ve got a lot of work to do to get kids up to speed to play varsity football,” Goodvin said. The defensive secondary will include Gersema, Niehouse, Bell, Faith Banissan, Giles Smith, Elicha Mboungou and more as MHS searches for the right mix of players to make plays defensively. “One of our big questions is how will we develop and get ourselves ready up front on both sides of the ball,” Goodvin added. “There’s just a lack of snaps with a lot of the guys that we’re gonna be relying on to play a lot of football.” The Bobcats tapped into the fútbol pipeline again at kicker, where Angel Gomez has the inside track on kickoffs. Fellow MHS soccer player Antoni Rodriguez Torres has turned heads kicking extra points, but the punter position is as yet unsettled according to Goodvin. “We’re really excited just to get rolling,” he said. “Opening up with Ames is

always awesome because of the rivalry it has always been, so we’re definitely excited for that.” Marshalltown travels to face the Little Cyclones in Week 1, starting the season on Friday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. in Ames. The Bobcats’ home opener is a Week 2 meeting with Waterloo East, and a road trip to Mason City follows. Marshalltown entertains Des Moines East in Week 4 before the strength of schedule makes a decided uptick. “I don’t think it’s a secret the second half of our schedule gets significantly tougher,” Goodvin said. “With that being said, we’ve got to make sure that we’re continuing to get better every day and preparing ourselves to play our best football. Get btter every week so we’re playing our best football in that second half of the season.” The program’s first playoff berth since 2012 isn’t a stated goal, but Goodvin hopes it could be a superlative side-effect of his team’s hard work and improvement over the course of the campaign. “I’m very ‘today,’” he said. “Be where your feet are and get better today. Every single day, if your mindset’s anywhere else other than getting better, you’re on the wrong track. Control what you can control, and let’s ensure we’re getting better.”

Towne is a former state wrestling qualifier who wrestled at 157 pounds last winter, but he was willing to make the move to the line to help the team, according to coach McIntyre. “Beau was a very versatile player last year,” he said. “We moved him around a lot offensively wherever we needed somebody. We had one returning offensive lineman that decided not to come out this year, and it was pretty late in the game, so it’s tough, but Beau’s wrestling background, the toughness, the leverage — and he’s a really smart football player, so that’s a big help to the team.” With last year’s 3-5 overall record came a 2-4 mark in Class A’s District 2 standings. A 46-20 loss

to Belmond-Klemme was the outcome that kept the Comets from nabbing fourth place in the district and a spot in the playoffs, but coach McIntyre is hoping a better start to non-district play can propel BCLUW to greater heights this season. The schedule opens with a home game against East Marshall, and the Mustangs have won six of the last seven meetings. “I think you always want to win your first game and we play East Marshall, which is close in proximity, but they had their way with us last year,” coach McIntyre said. “So what we’re looking for is did we close the gap in Year 2? How do we stack up against them?”

Redhawks dead set on reaching playoffs By ROSS THEDE TIMES-REPUBLICAN

TRAER — The North Tama football team made its 8-Man debut in 2025, going 4-4 in its first foray into the fast-paced game. The Redhawks are ready for Round 2. North Tama has 29 players on its high school roster as they run it back in the school’s second season of 8-Man football. Nine letterwinners are back in uniform and a big freshman class has head coach Andrew Knaack excited for the future, too. “This will be one of the first years since I’ve been here that we’re not having to pull up a freshman to fill a spot,” he said, “so having those kind of numbers makes you excited. Having the numbers, being able to run two units, having guys that maybe aren’t our first group but are still good enough varsity players to be able to run scout (team), that’ll help get more of a game-like feel of what we’re going to see during the year.” North Tama finished in the middle of its seven-team District 6, going 3-3 with three-straight wins in Weeks 4-6. Back-to-back decisive losses to Collins-Maxwell and eventual state semifinalist Gladbrook-Reinbeck left a sour taste in the Redhawks’ mouths, and the only way to wash that out is to hit the gridiron again. “I don’t like to be overconfident,” Knaack said, “but with the group of guys we have coming back, I think we should be able to compete very well and be right there in the mix at the end of the year.” The Redhawks missed out on the playoffs by mere points, with Exira/EHK collecting the final spot in the 8-Man bracket after also finishing 4-4 overall and 3-3 in their district. Giving up 44.88 points per game turned out to be even harder to swallow as North Tama’s minus-1.5 point differen-

tial in district play trailed Exira/ EHK’s 0.33 to break the tie. “It’s fast, there’s a lot of points being scored,” Knaack said of the 8-Man game. “The hardest thing for us as a staff was just defensively. I know coach (Tom) McDermott takes pride in defense and that guy spent all summer trying to gameplan how to fix that. “You just realize that you’re going to give up touchdowns, no matter how good your defense is, so that’s the biggest thing we learned (about 8-Man).”

McDermott was the defensive coordinator when North Tama went 12-1 in 2009, allowing only 46 points all season and 28 of them in a state semifinal loss to Mason City Newman. “We definitely learned the first game what it was about,” Knaack added. “It’s fast, even if you don’t have fast kids it’s just a fast game. It’s fun though. There’s plenty of points being scored and kids are excited about it.” North Tama returns its starting quarterback and leading rusher in

Kayvin Morris as well as starting tailback Maddox Rausch. Morris was 116-for-166 passing for 1,208 yards and 19 touchdowns with just four interceptions last fall, and he also rushed for 497 yards and eight scores. Rausch got 125 rushing yards in addition to 26 receptions for 240 and four of his five touchdowns. Senior tight end Brayton Cibula added 32 catches for 197 yards and six scores as a primary red zone threat. “Coach (Dalton) Hulme loves

to throw the ball around,” Knaack said. “That didn’t change last year, and the kids are excited about doing that instead of just groundand-pound it. It’s fun to open it up a little bit — you have to keep up with the other guys. “Our speed’s not quite where it’s at with some of the other schools, so we’ve got to be able to do some things scheme-wise to put our kids in the best position to get the ball.” North Tama still averaged 39 REDHAWKS | 15

points per game in its 8-Man debut, but it’s unknown how much it will take to keep up with the likes of district powerhouse Gladbrook-Reinbeck and others. “G-R is consistently a very good team and, as a staff, we focused a lot over the summer on just doing the little things right,” Knaack said. “In our first district game last year we were ahead of Clarksville going into the fourth quarter, and they were ranked. “We’re not going to overlook anybody, we take it one week at a time, but there’s no reason with the group we have that we can’t be competitive and be right there at the end of the season hoping for a district title.”

Trojans look to build on their best season in a decade By STEVE BRANT TIMES-REPUBLICAN

It was a special fall in 2025 for the South Tama football program. Finishing 5-4, it was the program’s first winning season and most wins since 2015, when the Trojans finished 11-1. It marked their first postseason birth since 2020, and the team earned a total of 15 players on the all-district teams and honorable mentions. But, with all of that now behind them, what does the 2026 version of Trojan football do to build on their success and keep

the momentum going? “Our goal is to enhance our performance compared to last year and not settle for anything less,” said STC head coach Nate Doran, who is entering his 11th season at the helm. The Trojans have been hard at work this fall camp, with practice officially starting on Monday, Aug. 10. The week prior, the coaches hosted their annual football camp for students in grades 1-12. Doran has been pleased with the effort so far as the Trojans get ready for their season-opener on Fri-

day, Aug. 28, against Vinton-Shellsburg. He noted that, since fall camp began, “the most significant step forward has been fostering teamwork through collaboration and navigating challenges together. This has helped us create a stronger bond within this new group.” Doran and offensive coordinator Dustin Peska will rely on familiar faces when the Trojans get the ball this season. First-team all-district running back Eric Medina returns for his senior season after rushing for 1,145 yards in 2025. Medina was only the

fourth Trojan in the last 16 years to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season. “Eric is undoubtedly a playmaker,” Doran said. “I have always been taught by my coaching mentors and genuinely believe that in football, it’s essential to get the ball to your playmakers. Eric will definitely be receiving the ball this season.” STC will also bring back key offensive linemen who paved the way for Medina’s junior effort. Among others, the line will STC | 17

be anchored by two Trojans who earned all-district recognition last fall: junior Lakyr Peska (second team) and senior Manny Cervantes (honorable mention). Offensively, Doran will have an additional luxury this fall: for the first time since Clayton Rosenberger in 2015-2016, he will have a returning quarterback. Junior Ryan Brant will take the snaps after earning second-team all-district honors in his sophomore campaign. “Ryan possesses all the qualities of an outstanding quarterback,” Doran said. “He leads by example, isn’t afraid to express his thoughts, holds both his teammates and himself accountable, and has a remarkable ability to quickly move on from each play — which is an essential trait for a quarterback.” Overall, Doran likes how his offense has progressed in the preseason practices. “We’ve established our base offense, so now we will focus on addressing weak areas to fortify them. We will also adapt and introduce new concepts that build upon our successes from last year,” he said. As for the Trojan defense, STC will be led by senior Kyle Youngbear, a first-team all-district selection last season, and the fourth leading tackler in all of Class 2A last fall. Youngbear has more career tackles (174.5) than any Trojan in at least the last 16 seasons, which is even more impressive when you consider he has his entire senior year ahead of him. “Kyle embodies the spirit of ‘all heart,’” Doran said of his star linebacker. “He is the most humble, hard-working, determined, and focused kid on and off the field. His success is completely earned and deserved.”

Joining Youngbear on the Trojan defense is a strong, experienced secondary. Seniors Michael Henry and Eli Cruickshank both earned first-team all-district selections last fall. Henry recorded 51.5 tackles last season, while also leading STC in interceptions (3). Cruickshank recorded 26 tackles. STC will also bring back plenty of other defenders with experience, including senior Josiah Houghton, junior Sam Garcia, junior Ethan Page, Peska, Brant, Cervantes, and Medina. “On the defensive side, we need to fill the gaps left by some key seniors from last year, while also striving to enhance and strengthen the areas where we lacked last season,” Doran noted. On special teams, STC returns a wealth of key contributors from last year, including: Medina (placekicking and punting), Cruickshank (kickoffs), and Henry and junior Izak Schroeder, who led the return game on his way to second-team all-district honors. The Trojans hosted West

Wolverines off and running after a win By ROSS THEDE TIMES-REPUBLICAN

GARWIN — The GMG football team is going to put the adage about strength in numbers to the test. The Wolverines only have 16 players on their roster, but they’ve formed a close-knit contingent that is set on showing its strength regardless. Seth Hedman, a threeyear assistant coach, has taken the reins for his first go-round as GMG’s head coach and has the Wolverines believing in themselves and each other, and now it’s time to go out and play. GMG won its Week Zero game on Friday, Aug. 21, at Belle Plaine, prevailing 3228 for the program’s first win over somebody other than Meskwaki Settlement School since 2023. “GMG’s had a hard go for a while,” said Hedman, an Oklahoma native who played collegiately at Drake University. “Our last best year was 4-5, that was my first year, and we had a lot of really good athletes that year. I think the athletes we have going into this season are maybe not as good individually as some of those athletes, but overall in our juniors and seniors I think we have a better group of athletes. “I think that there’s a lot of optimism and enthusiasm — they have high hopes and I think I have high hopes as well to see them reach their potential.” The Wolverines lost their seven games last year by an average of 40.2 points per game despite scoring 25.25 points per contest — up 10 points from 2024 — in a

The GMG football team has a roster of just 16 players for this year’s foray into 8-Man District 6, but half of them are returning letters. The Wolverines’ letterwinners pictured above are, front row: (from left) Dante Jay, Jacob Snider and Caleb Ferch; back row: Easton Sash, Easton Brown, Jacoby Woodbury, Bodie Hutchinson and Ethan Klemesrud.

stark display of the lack of parity in 8-Man high school football in Iowa. GMG’s lone victory came by 64 points against Meskwaki, they lost by two to Central City, and the rest of the games weren’t close on the scoreboard. Hedman is worried less about the outcome from that perspective, but more about how the team plays compared to the day before. “I feel pretty good about our ability to get out there and compete with just about all these teams (on our

schedule),” he said. “There’s a couple that are probably at another level, but that’s not to say that we shouldn’t have a good year this year. “It’s maybe not ‘sky’s the limit,’ you know — we’re not going for a gold ball over here — but for where we’ve been, I think we can have a really great year, but we’ve got to earn every inch.” Offensively, the Wolverines have a bulk of their offense back from a season ago. Senior quarterback Ethan Klemesrud returns

with 1,053 passing yards and nine touchdowns as well as a team-leading 615 rushing yards and 11 scores. His primary weapons — juniors Bodie Hutchinson, Jacoby Woodbury and Easton Sash — are all back as well. The team is missing all but 358 yards of offense from last year’s squad, which ranked third in 8-Man’s District 6 with 1,164 passing yards. “We’re going to utilize all of our skills there, all of our weapons, but ultimately

putting the ball in the hands of the quarterback and really trying to work to this strengths,” said Hedman. The Wolverines gave up 52.88 points per game, however, and ranked 61st out of 65 8-Man teams in 2025. “We’re just trying to play good football, that’s one of our real goals,” Hedman said. “We’ve got 16 guys on the roster, so everybody’s going to play a little bit of varsity and then most guys will play on JV, too. And my mentality is let’s get reps,

let’s play football. “We just want to keep getting better. We’ll add things, install things, and we’ll keep fine-tuning our skills so that we’re playing our best at Week 9.” The Wolverines forced just five turnovers in 2025. Caleb Ferch returns as the team’s leading tackler from last year’s defensive unit with 48 stops, while Woodbury, Sash, Hutchinson and Klemesrud represent Nos. 3-6. Easton Brown is the team’s only sophomore and he’ll return to the line, while senior Dante Jay will see a bump in playing time. Hedman expects a handful of freshmen to fill in and find a lot of action in the varsity lineup as well. “I really like our team culture right now,” Hedman said. “Our vision is a brotherhood of joyful sacrifice, aka doing hard stuff with your friends, so we’re embracing the difficulty, not shying away from it, having a little bit of fun and showing grit and toughness. If somebody punches you in the mouth, you spit your tooth out and smile and keep fighting. “There’s a determination, a toughness, a sacrifice to it, and the sacrifice stinks, but if we do it with joy and we go through that together then we get to have camaraderie, we get to have laughter, we get to have inside jokes, and I see it building.” The Wolverines, now 1-0 to start the season for the first time since 2021, will play their home opener on Friday, Aug. 28, against Calamus-Wheatland. The Warriors blanked GMG 35-0 to start last season.
