Area farmers recognized with Century and Heritage Farm Awards at Iowa State Fair Decades of persistence, resilience and work noted
By MIKE DONAHEY TIMES-REPUBLICAN DES MOINES - Farm families from Grundy, Hardin, Marshall and Tama counties were well represented at the 2026 Century and Heritage Farm award ceremonies held Aug. 20 at the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. According to reports from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) - 15 farmers from the four counties which comprise the TimesRepublican’s primary readership area qualified for Century Farm awards. That is, through a
rigorous application process they demonstrated a farm of at least 40 acres had been owned by the family continuously for 100 years or more. IDALS also reported 23 farmers from the four counties qualified for Heritage Farm awards – meaning through a detailed application process they proved the farm also of at least 40-acres had been owned by the same family for 150 years or more. The Mosher family of Liscomb had seven family members on stage for their Century Farm award, including applicant Esther McKibben Mosher. “It was an honor receiving the

award,” said Dynette Mosher of the family. “The family has owned the farm since 1877.” Similarly, the Zmolek Family Farm of Traer filled the stage with 22 family members ranging from infants to toddlers to middle-aged. The farm has been in the family since 1926. The Donald and Doris Edler farm of State Center was the oldest established Century Farm in the four-county area having originated in 1873, according to IDALS. The Kim Muckler farm of Gilman in Marshall County and the Charles Bru and Alice Wrage farms of Tama County all tied with the oldest Heritage Farm, according to IDALS. The farms originated in 1855. It was evident during the ceremonies that many individuals and families were excited and also humbled to have qualified to carry on their family’s legacy. It was not unusual to see three or sometimes four generations on stage flanked by the American and state of Iowa flags. Older generations could recall World War II and of family members speaking of the Great Depression. Younger generations have experienced cyclical farm markets, increased global competition, the COVID-19 global pandemic, global warming and tariffs. Awardees ranged from some seniors using walkers and wheelchairs to middle-aged to toddlers to infants. Many wore color-coordinated tee-shirts with the family name emboldened specifically designed for the event.
IDALS reported 274 Century Farm and 240 Heritage Farm awards were recognized at the event. The 240 Heritage Farm awards was a record,” according to IDALS. More than 21,000 Century Farm awards have been made statewide since 1976, and more than 2,000 Heritage awards have been made statewide since 2006. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) President Brent Johnson and IFBF vice-president Brian Feldpausch presented certificates and farm markers to awardees who attended the nearly eight-hour event. Thousands attended to support awardees. It was free of charge and open to fairgoers. The Century Farm awards were first given in 1976 to coincide with America’s bicentennial according to IDALS. The Heritage Farm award program was established in 2006 and awards made that year according to IDALS. Staff from IDALS and IFBF and Iowa Future Farmers of America assisted with the event. Colin Tadlock and Leah Mosher of IDALS served as emcees. Mosher is an area native and a graduate of BCLUW High School. Kelley Reece of IDALS is the program coordinator with assistance throughout the year from IFBF and Iowa State University Extension offices statewide.
