NOTE FROM THE CEO GROWTH STARTS HERE When people hear the words economic development, they often picture ribbon cuttings, groundbreaking ceremonies, or the announcement of a new company choosing our region. Those moments are exciting, and they absolutely matter. We celebrate every one of them.

What makes this effort especially meaningful is that it truly is a regional collaboration. City leadership, County leadership, our regional partners, state economic development professionals, educational institutions, utilities, and industry leaders all play an important role in helping turn conversations into solutions. Economic development has never been about one organization; it succeeds because communities work together.

Q&A

JENNIFER MICHELS

WITH

BUSINESS CONNECTION - FALL 2026

Nestlé Purina

What did you know about Fort Dodge before you took this job, and what surprised you once you got here? I knew Fort Dodge had a strong manufacturing history and a reputation for hardworking people. What has impressed me most since arriving is the sense of community. People genuinely care about one another, and that extends into our kitchen. I…ve also been impressed by how invested the community is in seeing local businesses and employers succeed. It…s a place where people take pride in their work and where they live. On a personal note, I…ve really enjoyed exploring Fort Dodge…s extensive trail system. Whether I…m walking my dogs, going for a run, or riding my bike, the miles of well-maintained trails have been a wonderful surprise and a great way to experience the community. They really add to the quality of life here.

Do you have any pets of your own?

A lot of people drive past the plant on Fifth Avenue South every day. What's actually happening inside? Inside our kitchen, team members are working together to safely produce high-quality food for pets that are shipped across the country. It…s a highly automated operation where every step—from receiving ingredients to cooking, packaging, and quality testing—is carefully monitored. There is an incredible amount of teamwork, technology, and quality assurance behind every product that leaves our facility.

Absolutely. I have two adopted cats, Olive and Ellie, and two Old English Sheepdogs, Walter and Mabel. Like many of our associates, I…m a pet owner, so producing high-quality pet food has a very personal meaning for me. I understand the special bond people have with their pets because I feel the same way about mine. It…s rewarding to know that the products we make help families care for pets that are truly members of the family.

What's the journey of a can of Purina cat food, from the ingredients arriving to the truck pulling out?

Every can begins with carefully selected ingredients that arrive at our Fort Dodge kitchen and are inspected to ensure they meet our high standards for quality and safety. From there, our team combines them using carefully crafted recipes, gently cooks the food, and packages it into cans. Throughout the process, we perform quality and food safety checks to make sure every can meets the standards pet owners expect from Purina. Once the cans are packaged, they…re prepared for shipment and delivered to retailers across the country.

How many employees do you have there?

We currently employ approximately 335 associates at the Fort Dodge facility, with additional growth occurring as we continue to expand our operations.

12 • Fall 2026 Business Connection

The best part of the journey happens after the truck leaves Fort Dodge—when someone opens a can at home and a hungry cat comes running, eager for mealtime. Knowing that something made here helps nourish pets that are cherished members of the family is what makes our work so meaningful.

Q&A Why Fort Dodge? Purina has plants all over the country — what made this the right place to grow? Fort Dodge has been an important part of Purina's manufacturing network for 50 years. The community has a skilled workforce, a strong manufacturing culture, and excellent transportation access, making it a great location to serve customers across the country. Just as important, we've built lasting relationships here. Our associates and the community have consistently demonstrated their commitment to excellence, making Fort Dodge a natural place to continue investing for the future.

JENNIFER MICHELS Nestlé Purina

This project is a several-hundred-milliondollar expansion in Fort Dodge. Can you tell us about the new products, Fancy Feast gems, and how this is the only plant in the US that produces this type of product? Can you help readers picture what that means? This investment demonstrates Nestlé Purina's confidence in both Fort Dodge and our people. The expansion adds the capability to produce Fancy Feast Gems, a premium wet cat food that features a unique presentation and texture designed to provide cats with an elevated mealtime experience.

What makes this especially exciting is that Fort Dodge will be the only Purina facility in the United States producing this product. That means pet owners across the country who purchase Fancy Feast Gems are receiving a product made right here in Fort Dodge. To help picture it, imagine adding an entirely new, state-of-the-art kitchen inside an already busy operation. It includes advanced equipment, new production capabilities, and highly skilled associates working together to produce an innovative product while maintaining the highest standards for quality and food safety.

What are some of the benefits of being a Nestle employee?

Our people are our greatest strength. We strive to create a workplace where associates feel safe, respected, and supported while having opportunities to grow their careers. We invest in training and development, promote from within whenever possible, and encourage employees to share ideas that improve safety, quality, and performance. Beyond competitive pay and benefits, we work to build a culture where everyone understands how their work contributes to something bigger. Every day, our associates help provide nutritious food for pets that families love.

You recently celebrated 50 years in Fort Dodge, is this longevity typical for Nestlé Purina?

Yes. Nestlé Purina has a long history of operating manufacturing facilities for decades because we make long-term investments in our people, our products, and the communities where we operate. Reaching 50 years in Fort Dodge is something we're incredibly proud of, and our recent expansion is another sign that we're committed to the future here. We see Fort Dodge continuing to play an important role in helping us serve pet owners for many years to come.

How does Nestle give back to our community?

Being a good neighbor is an important part of who we are. We support organizations that strengthen our community through volunteerism, charitable giving, and partnerships with local nonprofits. One example is our support of Purple Leash initiatives, which help domestic violence shelters become petfriendly so survivors don't have to choose between their own safety and leaving a beloved pet behind. We're proud to support programs like these, along with many other local organizations and events that make Fort Dodge a stronger community.

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Founded in 1956 in Jefferson, Iowa, McClure was built on a commitment to strong relationships and practical solutions. In 1964, the company officially relocated its headquarters to the Warden Plaza in Fort Dodge, Iowa. What began as a small Iowa-based firm has grown into a team of more than 285 professionals across 18 offices, serving clients and communities nationwide. Throughout its history, McClure has remained focused on making lives better by turning clients’ visions into reality. Today, the firm’s expertise spans aviation, site development, transportation, water, wastewater, structural engineering, surveying, real estate, and construction, allowing McClure to deliver integrated solutions that shape communities and support long-term growth.

Celebrating Jo

lure

Years

On June 30, 2026, McClure celebrated 70 years in business, and the Fort Dodge region has been an important part of that story every step of the way. Just two years after relocating the company to Fort Dodge, Jon McClure recognized potential in a young construction worker named Mike Trotter and hired him as a survey crew member on his 20th birthday in 1966. He later encouraged Trotter to attend Iowa State University and pursue an engineering degree. Thousands of projects later, as both a professional engineer and surveyor, Trotter marked an incredible milestone: 60 years at McClure, on his 80th birthday in January 2026.

14 • Fall 2026 Business Connection

During the celebration, Trotter quickly redirected attention away from himself, recognizing the many clients, coworkers, contractors, and stakeholders who have made McClure such a rewarding place to spend six decades. Trotter also highlighted what many knew to be true of Jon McClure, “Some people test you, some people love you. Jon did it all and always brought the best out in you”. While many current team members were not yet born when Trotter began his career, a video tribute captured the lasting impact he has had on generations of team members. Words such as trusted mentor, advisor, teacher, and reliable expert were used repeatedly to describe their colleague and friend. He recently admitted some newer team members’ talent and technology may be quicker than him, but he often still gets to show them a thing or two. He further emphasized his 60 years of McClure and 80 years of life experience, saying, “Humility is not a character defect; it’s a strength that helps create solutions to challenges.” Trotter exemplifies the value of combining engineering and surveying expertise to provide unique and dependable solutions. In recognition of those qualities, one of McClure’s highest internal honors is the Mike Trotter Technical Excellence Award. Today, he remains based in Fort Dodge and continues to mentor engineers throughout the company, while still finding time to drag race in his free time! Another longtime leader, Terry Lutz, joined McClure in 1978 and was immediately drawn to Jon McClure’s entrepreneurial spirit, a quality that continues to define the organization today. Jon encouraged Lutz to build relationships, embrace calculated risks, and seek opportunities for growth. That philosophy led Lutz, Trotter, and their trusted partner Brent Johnson to purchase part of the company from Jon McClure in 1981.

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: “Humility is not a character defect; it’s a strength that helps create solutions to challenges”.

Mike Trotter It was a risky time to invest due to minimal work and a tough economy, but they believed in each other, hard work and the people around them. Johnson found humor in the moment being quoted, “How can we refuse an offer to be a minority stockholder in a closed corporation with no work and 18% interest?” They went on to buy the remainder of the business in 1985. Following Jon McClure’s footsteps, they invested countless hours building relationships and creating opportunities that laid the foundation for the company's growth. Lutz has always believed civil engineering consultants possess a unique perspective on economic development because they work closely with so many communities and stakeholders. That perspective inspired him to run for Mayor of Fort Dodge, a role he passionately held from 2006 to 2010. His time as mayor and as an individual real estate developer provided valuable insight into how municipal leaders evaluate and prioritize projects, a perspective that later influenced his approach to mentoring younger McClure team members. People within McClure are taught to view projects through the eyes of owners, contractors, developers, and community leaders so they can better understand stakeholder needs and help bring visions to life. After 48 years of leadership and a career dedicated to advancing McClure’s vision of making lives better and mission of building relationships for success, Terry officially retired from the company on July 1, 2026.

Mike Trotter and Terry Lutz are just two examples of the many McClure team members who have invested in themselves, their colleagues, and the communities they serve. The Fort Dodge region has benefited from those investments in countless ways, some highly visible and others behind the scenes. Among the many local projects McClure has helped design are: the Wastewater Treatment Plant; the Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Plant; Community Sewer Initiative rehabilitation and hydraulic upgrade projects; runway, taxiway, hangar, and apron improvements at Fort Dodge Regional Airport; recreational trail systems; drainage district improvements; Webster County Ag Park Surveying and Infrastructure Master Planning; Decker Industrial Park; Corridor Plaza Development; 5th Avenue South Corridor Enhancements; 1st Avenue North Streetscape Enhancements; Triton Plaza Development; Williams Bend Development; Orchard Glen Development; Marker 126 Development; and improvements at Snell-Crawford Park and Badger Lake at Kennedy Park.

Terry Lutz Today, McClure’s Fort Dodge office is home to 14 of the company’s 285 team members and remains one of 18 offices stretching from Sioux City to Kansas City to Boston, Massachusetts. With growth being constant on McClure’s horizon, these numbers will have changed by the time this prints. While the company’s headquarters is now located in Ankeny, Iowa, its Fort Dodge roots and founding values remain deeply embedded in its culture. As McClure celebrates 70 years of service, the company extends its gratitude to the Fort Dodge region and its many project partners for their continued investment in the future and for trusting McClure to help bring that future to life.

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

We’re Available — right here. In Fort Dodge, banking has never just been about transactions. It’s about showing up — for your neighbors, for local businesses and for the everyday moments that actually matter. That’s what Availa Bank has been doing here for more than 25 years. You see it in the small, familiar interactions. A quick question that turns into a real conversation. A stop into the bank that feels more like catching up than checking a box. A team that doesn’t just recognize your name but also understands what you’re working toward. Because around here, people are building something. A business. A home. A future that takes shape one decision at a time. And when it comes to those decisions, you don’t want to feel like you’re on your own. You want someone who gets it — who knows when to offer guidance and when to simply listen. That’s what the Fort Dodge team is here for.

With 19 employees who live and work in this community, Availa Bank isn’t a voice on the other end of a phone or a name on a screen. It’s people you run into at the grocery store, at local events or on the golf course on a Saturday morning. People who’ve built relationships here over decades — not months. That kind of connection doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built over time. And it’s one of the reasons Availa Bank has been voted “Best Bank” by Reader’s Choice five years in a row.

And while a lot has changed over the years, one thing hasn’t: People still want banking to feel simple. Accessible. Human. Sometimes that means sitting down and talking things through. Sometimes it means handling it quickly from your phone. Most of the time, it’s a mix of both. However you prefer to bank, the goal is the same — to make things easier, clearer and a little more manageable. That’s what having the right bank should feel like. Less friction. More confidence. A sense that you’re moving forward with someone in your corner.

But if you ask the team, they’ll tell you that recognition isn’t the goal — it’s just a reflection of something bigger. You’ll find them giving their time outside the bank, too. Volunteering. Serving on local boards. Supporting community events. Being part of the same organizations and causes that make Fort Dodge what it is. Because being available doesn’t stop at the front door — it carries into the community.

VOTED “BEST BANK” by Reader’s Choice five years in a row It also shows up in how decisions are made. Here, they’re made locally by people who understand the pace, the priorities and the realities of life in Fort Dodge. That means you’re not waiting for someone miles away to weigh in. You’re getting answers from someone who knows your situation and your community.

At Availa Bank, that idea of being available isn’t just something we say. It’s something the Fort Dodge team has been living out for more than two decades — in the bank, out in the community and in the relationships they build every day. Because at the end of the day, it’s simple.

Stop in and see what’s Available when your bank is truly local.

CITY CONNECTION BUILDING A BETTER WEBSITE FOR THE PEOPLE WE SERVE Less searching. Fewer trips. Better access.

building out the site, every decision is being made with the end user in mind. Instead of asking where a page fits within the City’s organizational structure, we are asking where someone would naturally look for it. Instead of focusing on what makes the most sense to us, we are considering what will make the most sense to the person visiting the site. That shift affects everything from page names and navigation to the words we use to explain City services. The City of Fort Dodge has launched a new website, but the change is about much more than a new look or web address. It represents a shift in how we think about the City’s online presence - and, more importantly, who it is meant to serve. Over time, our previous website had become something of a repository for City staff. Information was organized in ways that reflected how we work internally: by department, program, responsibility, or process. While that structure made sense to those of us who work with City terminology every day, it did not always make sense to the residents, businesses, and visitors simply trying to find an answer. Eventually, we had to step back and decide whether to keep the existing site or start over. We chose to start over. Seven months later, www.fortdodge.gov is officially live. Fun fact - you can only get a .gov domain without a state identifier if your organization’s name is completely unique in the US and does not share a name with any other city, county, or town. Fort Dodge, Kansas has never been incorporated; therefore, it’s not recognized as an official city. The goal of the new website is to create a site that functions for the people we serve. As we continue

18 • Fall 2026 Business Connection

The site is still a work in progress. We are building and reviewing it page by page, checking links, updating information, and making sure content is accurate, useful, and located where people are most likely to find it. It is detailed work, and not always the most exciting, but it is necessary if the site is going to be dependable. Google’s search results have not fully caught up with the change, either. Older pages may continue to appear in searches, and some links may temporarily lead to outdated locations. For now, the best place to begin is directly at www.fortdodge.gov. If you are looking for information and cannot find it, please reach out. We need to hear from users so we can identify missing information, unclear wording, and pages that may not be organized as intuitively as we intended. That feedback matters because the website is not being built for City staff. It is being built for you. The best way to share feedback is by emailing communications@fortdodgeiowa.org. One of the most important improvements will be moving as many City forms and applications online as possible. We know that making a trip to City Hall during regular business hours is not always convenient. Between work, school, appointments, transportation, and other responsibilities, it can be

difficult to get away. Whenever a process can be completed securely and effectively online, our goal is to make that option available. Residents should be able to fill out forms, submit information, and begin common City processes from home, work, or a phone without rearranging an entire day or making an unnecessary trip to City Hall. Not every service can be moved online, and sometimes speaking directly with a City employee will still be the best way to get something done. But wherever we can remove a barrier, simplify a process, or save someone a trip, we intend to do it. In the coming weeks, we will also share instructions on how to sign up for email notifications about road closures, public meetings, important announcements, and other updates. Rather than requiring people to repeatedly check the website, these notifications will bring relevant information directly to them. Those who are interested can create their accounts now, but please remember that we are still building some of these features. We will also introduce a new digital assistant through Frase Answers. Our newest, although not yet named, team member will be an AI-powered chatbot that uses the City’s existing website content to answer questions 24 hours a day. Users will be able to ask questions in everyday language and receive answers based on published City information. Whether someone is searching after hours, using a mobile device, or unsure which department handles an issue, the chatbot will provide another way to find helpful information quickly. As we continue improving the site, our priorities will remain the same: clear language, logical organization, easier access, and better communication. A city website should not require residents to understand the structure of local government before they can find a form, check a meeting date, learn about a road closure, or get an answer to a basic question. It should meet people where they

are and help them accomplish what they came to do. There will still be links to fix, pages to reorganize, wording to clarify, and information to add. We hope residents will help shape what comes next. When you cannot find something, tell us. When a page is confusing, let us know. Your feedback helps us view the site through the eyes of the people it was created to serve. This launch is not the finish line. It is the beginning of a more useful, responsive, and accessible way to connect with the City of Fort Dodge - one page, one link, one online form, and soon, one not-yetnamed chatbot at a time.

COUNTY CONNECTION NEARLY ‫‮‬16 MILLION IN THE GROUND: WEBSTER COUNTY…S BUSIEST CONSTRUCTION YEAR 390th Street and Union Avenue — Hidden Acres 1.6 miles of new pavement leading into the Hidden Acres summer camp Completed in May Hidden Acres funded 50⁒ of the project cost

Ask anyone what drives economic growth, and you…ll hear about jobs, buildings, and investment. But underneath all of it runs something more basic: the roads and bridges that get workers to their shifts, freight to market, and families to the places they love. This year, Webster County is putting nearly ‫‮‬16 million into that foundation. The 2026 construction program touches every corner of the county — new pavement, resurfaced highways, wider shoulders, replaced bridges, and the county…s newest roundabout.

160th Street — north side of Harlan Rogers 1.2 miles of new pavement, recently completed Includes a trail connection linking two major sections of existing trail Jointly funded by Webster County, Webster County Conservation, and the City of Fort Dodge

Here…s what…s happening and why it matters. Bridges and Structures Webster County…s structure work this year focuses on aging crossings that carry daily traffic: Des Moines River bridge replacement — the largest structure project on the list. Three short-span bridges are being replaced with RCB (Reinforced Concrete Box) culverts, a longerlasting, lower-maintenance alternative to a traditional bridge deck. A fourth short bridge gets a creative solution: a converted railroad tanker car serving as a 10-foot-diameter culvert — a cost-effective approach that stretches taxpayer dollars further. New Pavement — and New Partners Three stretches of new pavement highlight what happens when public and private partners share the bill.

22 • Fall 2026 Business Connection

230th Street — Highway 169 to South River Road The final new paving segment of the year Fort Dodge Asphalt will complete the work this fall Georgia Pacific is helping fund the project

Each of these projects moved forward because a partner stepped up alongside the county. That…s collaboration doing exactly what it should.

The Roundabout at P56 and D14 The county…s final road project this year is a roundabout at the intersection of P56 and D14 — an intersection with an extensive crash history and real rush-hour congestion. Castor Construction is building the roundabout Target completion: October 14 Funded in part by a ‫‮‬500,000 Transportation Safety Improvement Program (TSIP) grant A National Distinction: The SS4A Grant Webster County is one of a very small number of counties in the entire country to receive a Safe Streets For All (SS4A) implementation grant. The award: ‫‮‬8.5 million toward paving and widening county roads over the next two years. This year's work: HMA overlay and widening on P59, Badger to Fort Dodge Shoulder paving on C56, west of Badger Shoulder paving on D20, Fort Dodge east to the county line

And it will come with a landmark. The F-84 jet that long sat in front of the Air Guard will be mounted in the center of the roundabout — a nod to Fort Dodge…s aviation and service history in a spot thousands of drivers will pass every week. As for whether Santa will continue to use the jet on his December route, the county is still awaiting word from the North Pole.

Next year's work: P73, Lehigh to Dayton D54, from P73 east to the county line Paved shoulders and wider driving surfaces do more than smooth the ride. They reduce run-offroad crashes, give drivers room to recover, and make these routes safer for the ag equipment, commercial trucks, and commuters that use them every day.

Why It Matters for Webster County Infrastructure rarely makes headlines until something goes wrong. But every project on this list makes the region a little more competitive: safer roads for the people who live here, better routes for the businesses that ship from here, and improved access to the parks, camps, and trails that make this a place people choose. Nearly ‫‮‬16 million is a significant investment in Webster County — and it…s being stretched further by partners who chose to invest right alongside the county. That…s how a stronger economy and community get built. One mile at a time

How did you first become interested in making music? I’ve had a passion for music from a young age. I started playing piano by ear at 5 and my parents quickly realized I had a natural talent. Did you grow up in a musical household? Yes. My Dad played the piano and both my Mom and Dad sang. They often played classical music and jazz on the record player/stereo. Tell us about your musical background/education. Before attending college, I took private voice and piano lessons. In High School, I accompanied the choir and played piano in the musical pit. Jan Altemeier was my piano teacher from 8th grade through high school and she did a phenomenal job preparing me for college auditions and competitions. Who has had the greatest influence on you musically? After having Kathleen Schreier as my music teacher in elementary school and high school, I realized that I wanted to be a choir director, just like her. Kathleen continued to be a mentor during my first years of teaching. I learned so much from her.

What are some of your musical accomplishments? I won a concerto competition in college and performed the Grieg concerto in A minor. This was a dream come true, especially since the Grieg concerto is one of my favorites. What is the most unusual thing to have happened to you, or to a student, during a performance? During a performance of Cinderella, the schools fire alarm was activated by the fog machine used for the fairy godmother. Luckily, the fire Marshall was in attendance at the performance and he was able to deactivate the alarm, so the show could go on. When you think back to the hundreds of student’s lives you touched as a music teacher, what do you hope they remember about you and/or your classroom? I’d like them to remember my classroom as a place where they were encouraged to challenge themselves and to pursue their dreams. I also hope that they remember it as a place where they were encouraged to be goofy and love themselves for who they are. What are your plans for retirement? I’ve accepted a teaching position at Saint Edmond High School where I will be teaching religion.

Were you always a storyteller as a kid, or did writing sneak up on you later? I was an eavesdropper as a kid who hovered on the perimeter and listened to the adult storytellers around me. I read constantly but didn’t recognize my affinity for writing until the early college years when I studied journalism. Writing columns at my first newspaper job out of college was the first time I received positive feedback for my writing. We had to write a column every day so my writing muscle got in good shape. After I fell out of newspaper work, the writing muscle got flabby. But I did complete a screenplay about the bike ride across Iowa during that time.

Did you have a teacher, or mentor, who really encouraged your creativity? Two of my music teachers, LeAnn Bigler, who chose me to sing Prepare Ye, and Kathleen Kelleher, from eighth grade on, stimulated our creativity with their cutting-edge music choices. Mrs. Kelleher really unleashed our creative spirit when we did a racy “King Tut” skit based on Steve Martin’s rendition. It’s one my favorite music memories! What’s the most fun part about writing for you? Dialogue. I love letting the characters talk away in my head then transpose it onto paper. Dialogue is a great channel to advance character development. Tell us about your newest book. What can readers expect? Shelved is a murder mystery set in a bookstore. The victim is a store employee and all of the staff are suspects. The story unfolds through the eyes of three of the employees and the police detective. A focal point of the action is the store counter area, nicknamed the Crow’s Nest. It takes place in the late ‘90s so there are a lot of cultural references from that era.

SAMANTHA HENRIKSEN When did you become interested in creating art? Honestly, I have been interested in art for as long as I can remember. I was home schooled up until high school, and I think all of that time at home allowed me the space to be artistic. My parents definitely fed my artistic pursuits from a young age as well, which I am grateful for. Did you grow up in an artistic family? No, not really. My mom wouldn’t call herself artistic, but she was an avid scrapbooker when I was young…She has

Hometown: Pleasant Hill, Iowa Profession: High School Art Teacher

long retired from that hobby, but it was definitely an art form. She was creative and very detailed in her work. When did you decide you wanted to become a teacher? I remember I was a sophomore in high school when I really thought that this was something I wanted to do for a career. I was inspired by my high school art teachers. The two I spent the most time with were Mr. Peterson and Mr. Swearngin at Southeast Polk. They helped fuel and develop my passion for art and my thought was that was something I would like to do for others someday as well. Where did you go to college and what is one of your most favorite memories during that time? I went to college at The University of Iowa. Some of my favorite memories were the last few years I was there when I shared an art studio with my best friend Sydney Miller. Whenever there was going to be a blizzard Sydney and I would try and get snowed into the art building. Well one night, we had a big enough snow storm that it worked. We ended up staying the night there in our studio and sleeping on a roll of turf that another student was going to use for their art show. Fall 2026 Business Connection • 25

Fort Dodge Community Foundation and UNITED WAY

THE POWER OF GIVING BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY Throughout our lives, from childhood to adulthood, our community is an essential part of everyday existence. No matter where we grew up, it is almost certain that, in some way, our community contributed positively to our formative years. This is why it is so important to return the favor and give back whenever we can. Thriving communities have engaged citizens who get involved and give back to their community. The more support we can offer, the better our community will be. And by investing in our community, we can enhance quality of life for ourselves, our families, our friends and our fellow citizens. Charitable giving and helping others are important principles in life. Those who are givers often receive the rewards of giving in many ways. And their giving doesn’t have to be a large donation or a grand gesture. The simplest way to contribute to your community is through your generosity and willingness to help others who are less fortunate. Whether donating to your favorite charities or causes or volunteering in ways that help others, contributing to your community can be rewarding and enriching. No doubt, by contributing to an important organization or cause, we are helping our community become a special place and a better place to live, work and raise our families. The Fort Dodge Community Foundation is Here to Help: The Fort Dodge Community Foundation is a nationally accredited community foundation that is a 501(c) (3) public charity that helps philanthropically inclined citizens support their favorite charities and causes. Getting emotionally ready to retire You’ve probably worked most of your adult life. Making the switch can be a big adjustment. It’s normal to be excited yet have some doubts. Are you okay with not having somewhere to go every day? Do you have other things you want to do? Money is only part of the picture. Make sure you’ve thought through how you actually feel about retiring. Here are five actions you can take to emotionally prepare for retirement: Think about how you want to spend your time Once in retirement, you’ll likely have more free time available than you’ve had in decades. For some, that may feel liberating, but many new retirees struggle to find a sense of purpose in their daily lives. To get a better sense of how your time might be spent, consider outlining your schedule for your first week, first month and even your first year in retirement. Are there large gaps of time in your schedule? If so, how might you fill it in ways that give you meaning and a sense of purpose? While everyone’s ideal retirement is different, common things to do in retirement include: Spending quality time with family and friends Working Volunteering Traveling Taking steps to improve health/fitness Pursuing hobbies and interests Learning new skills Identifying fulfilling ways to spend your time can better prepare you for your transition and help reduce the feelings of disorientation and uncertainty common with new retirees. Share your vision for retirement with your spouse and loved ones Getting alignment with your spouse or partner is critical, so talk with each other about your visions for retirement. Do you want to retire at the same time? Do you want to spend it the same way? Be sure to discuss what aspects of your retirement vision will be shared and what each of you will do individually. You may also want to discuss your retirement plans with close family members or friends, especially those you may be relying on and those who may be relying on you. For example, do they expect you to offer childcare or other favors after you’re no longer working full time? Are you expecting their help as you age? If necessary, decide on ground rules and boundaries ahead of time. By talking now, you can avoid surprises or contention in retirement. Test-drive retirement before you get there As you think of ways to spend your time ahead of retirement, consider test-driving those activities now to see how they suit you. Doing so can help you fine-tune your plans before retirement instead of in retirement. It can also help you build social networks and inroads into the activities you want to pursue, which may make for a smoother transition. And, if you’re thinking of making big changes in retirement, like moving to a new state, test-driving is especially important so that you don’t build your plans around something or make large financial commitments only to find out it’s not for you.

Consider stair-stepping into retirement The traditional path to retirement used to be working a 30- to 40-year career while saving enough to stop working altogether at retirement. But more and more Americans are gradually stepping into full retirement. This could include first moving to part-time employment, taking a lower-stress position or pursuing a dream job, and it may include multiple moves over time. Stair-stepping into retirement can provide financial flexibility and make the transition feel less stressful. Develop a financial strategy that supports your vision Preparing for the nonfinancial and financial aspects of retirement go hand in hand. The more purposeful you are around the nonfinancial aspects, the less likely you’ll be dissatisfied and want to adjust your plans in retirement, which could have financial implications. That’s why taking time now to think through the nonfinancial aspects helps prepare you both emotionally and financially. By understanding your retirement vision, we can work with you to develop a financial strategy to help make it a reality. How we can help It’s okay to be concerned about making the right choices about retirement – these are big decisions. Working with your financial advisor can help address some of these worries and make you feel more confident about your path forward. Contact a financial advisor today.
