Dodgers driven to create momentum

If offseason work is a true indicator of future success, Fort Dodge boys head coach Willie Williams has confidence that this season’s Dodgers will be the best of his five-year tenure to date.

“I really think this was the best and most work we’ve done in the spring and summer months together since I’ve been here,” Williams said.

“They’re on the same page and committed to the same thing: getting better every day. We keep focusing on communication, being coachable and trusting each other, and I truly believe we’re getting a lot closer to reaching those main goals.

“The success will take care of itself from there if we do.”

A large senior class of contributors will anchor the lineup, as the Dodgers focus on replacing graduated leading scorers

Cade Westerhoff and Carter Woodruff. Williams believes his squad will be able to do so by committee, with the return of regulars Taevon Feeley, Hayden Zuspann and Tytrell Mosley from the 12thgrade class, alongside rising sophomores Reggie Pederson and Brody Maehl.

FORT DODGE BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM MEMBERS are, front row (left to right): Kyree Rochon, Karter

Mosley, a four-year regular, will run the point. Zuspann, who averaged 6.7 points and knocked down over 34 percent of his three-point attempts in 2024-25, will flank him in the backcourt.

“Tytrell is ready,” Williams said. “He’s gone through a lot of ups and downs, but he’s matured and is excited to run this team.

“He’s a quiet leader and a really good person. Very positive to have around and be around.”

“The energy and focus is good,” Williams said. “Of course, we need to cover a lot in a short amount of time. But it’s all about effort and staying positive. Believing in yourself and your teammates. And constantly looking at what we can do to get better. That goes for myself and the coaching staff on down the line.”

Zuspann is “such a solid shooter,” Williams added. “He’s worked to be more consistent and less streaky. Hayden has put a ton of time into that and is embracing the role of being another senior leader.”

Pederson and Feeley are active and athletic on the wing. Despite being just a freshman last year, the 6-foot-3 Pederson averaged 7.2 points and 3.1 rebounds. The 6-2 Feeley scored at a 4.5-point clip while being active on the glass at 4.9 rebounds.

“Reggie and Taevon give us good size but even better contributions with their wingspans and ability

to play bigger than they are,” Williams said. “I’m excited to see what both of them can do now that they’re a year older and more prepared.”

Maehl gives Fort Dodge a legitimate post presence. He swam in deep water a year ago underneath as a 6-5 freshman, with 39 points and 33 rebounds as a rotation regular in the second half of the year.

“Brody’s a great kid,” Williams said. “Like Reggie, as just a sophomore, he’s still (a work in progress). But they’ve both taken some really nice steps and will be a big part of what we’re

doing the next three years.”

Seniors Kauner Jensen and Tisyn Hook both saw the court in every varsity contest off the bench last season and will again be valuable contributors, alongside classmate Gavin Davis. Seniors Carter Morris and Karter Hemrick offer backcourt depth, along with juniors Kyree Rochon and Javion Soppeland.

“I’m thankful to have this many seniors,” Williams said. “It’s been a while since we’ve had such a deep class like this, and they’re all really motivated to make the most of this last run.

“There are different skill sets and personalities, of course, but as long as they leave the ‘I’ out of team, we’ll be moving in the right direction.”

Williams is hoping defense “continues to be a program staple.”

“We need to get stops and take pride in that,”

Dodgers focus on gradual ascension

With 10 players back who saw varsity action last year, the long-term expectations remain high for the Fort Dodge girls basketball team.

But head coach Scott Messerly acknowledged his team still has plenty of room for improvement as the Dodgers head into the 2025-26 campaign.

Fort Dodge went 8-15 overall last year, including just a 2-6 record in the Iowa Alliance Conference North Division.

Senior standout LJ Maehl returns after a junior year that saw her earn Iowa Alliance first team honors. The four-year varsity starter is the only one of four players recognized by the league last year who returns for the Dodgers this winter.

Messerly noted the FDSH offense will center around the six-foot Maehl, who has signed to play basketball collegiately at Northwest Missouri State, a Div. II program.

“We want LJ to get at least five more shots a game (than last winter),” said Messerly. “Everything goes through her, whether it’s an in-bounds play or our offense. She’s got to get touches and clean looks.

“LJ is always on the move. She’s going to take a shot or hit a free throw, but she’s also a fantastic teammate and isn’t selfish with the ball. Everybody knows their role in our offense from there.”

Maehl led the team in scoring and rebounding last season as well. She scored 18.5 points per game and

pulled down eight rebounds per contest.

No other Dodger averaged double figures last year.

Meah McCaleb, who was second team all-conference, was second in scoring at 6.9 per game. She’s now playing volleyball at Iowa Central.

Maehl, the only senior on the team this year, is also closing in on 1,000 career points. She will more than likely become the all-time leading scorer for fiveplayer ball at the school.

Maehl had 981 points heading into the season opener. Former Drake Bulldog Molly Nelson scored 1,172 points from 1994-98 and is still at the top of the charts. Morgan Paulson is second at 995 points from 2001-05.

Messerly pointed out Maehl’s focus being on everything other than the record.

“LJ is handling it well. She just wants to win,” said Messerly. “She wants to go out in her senior year with a good season as a team.”

The Dodgers’ last winning record was in 2022-23 when they finished 12-10. They beat Webster City in a regional quarterfinal that year before losing to Humboldt. Maehl was a freshman with that group.

Last season, the Dodgers lost their postseason opener to Storm Lake.

The top two scorers outside of Maehl that return are juniors Ellie Doster and Maddie Hoshaw. Doster averaged 3.4 points per game. Hoshaw was scoring at 4.9 clip before a knee injury ended her season after seven games. She is slated to return in the new year.

Fort Dodge also lost Addison Lentsch to injury last season, which opened up some playing time for younger players. That should help this squad, according to Messerly.

“We have quite a few sophomores and juniors that played a lot for us last year,” said Messerly. “Right now, we are expecting a lot out of them.”

Sophomores Malay Hollins, Linnie Pratt, Charlotte Breeser and 6-foot-2 Grace Nichols join juniors Lentsch, Emma Lloyd, Ellie Doster, Bella Lee and Hoshaw as varsity returnees.

Lee played in 22 games last year, while Doster saw time in all 23. The others all saw action at least a dozen games.

“We can do more with all of them because they already know the offense

and the things we do,” Messerly said.

Freshman Brooklyn Gilliland will be the Dodgers’ starting point guard this year. Gilliland was the leading eighth grade scorer, and has plenty of AAU experience.

“Being a starting point guard as a freshman in 4A is tough, but everything just comes naturally for her right now,” said Messerly. “Brooklyn handles the ball well and distributes it well. She’s not necessarily looking to score first, but she can and shoots well.”

Sophomore Adele Seltz, also a six-footer, rounds out the varsity roster.

The Dodgers started the season on Nov. 21 against Waverly-Shell Rock. Their early season is busy, with games on Dec. 1, 2, 5, 8 and 9.

Messerly will again be assisted this year by Bill Foval, Alex Nagel, Noah Stanley and Max Morud, who was a volunteer assistant last year.

Excitement in the air for Gaels

dbecker@messengernews.net

Expectations come with the territory of a basketball team returning five leading scorers from a 23-win state semifinal campaign the year prior.

St. Edmond, under legendary head coach Adolph Kochendorfer, is not worried about any of that as they prepare for the 2025-26 boys campaign.

Instead, the Gaels are focusing on staying in the present by working day-by-day — just like they did last year.

“Honestly, we haven’t really talked about the expectations of this group a whole lot,” said Kochendorfer, who enters his 33rd season with a state championship and four runner-up finishes on his

resume. “We are still working just to get everybody healthy for the start of the season.

“I do think they know and understand what is expected of them, but they also know they have to prove it all over again on the court.”

All-stater Hunter Horn leads a savvy group. The senior is joined by returning starters and fellow classmates Jakob Koopman, Jack McElroy and Grant Galles.

A fifth senior, Carson Bargfrede, will replace the lone graduated player — Andrew Clavey — in the expected opening night starting lineup.

“They will challenge each and every single night out,” Kochendorfer said. “They are a pretty good group to coach, as they are easy to pull back in because they don’t get to full of

themselves.”

Horn, who surpassed 1,000 career points last season, averaged 23.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, two assists and a steal per game last year. He shot 59 percent from the field and 75 percent at the free throw line.

The 6-foot-4 post presence also blocked nearly a shot per game and has worked on expanding his shooting range.

“Hunter’s outside game has really improved,” Kochendorfer said. “He can take you off the dribble and has been putting in time to get better at the mid-range game.

“We still want him down low around the basket because his rebounding abilities are so great. Hunter just has a way of finding the ball off misses and creating second-chance scoring

opportunities for us.”

Koopman was second on the team in scoring at 11 points per game, adding eight rebounds, 2.5 assists and two steals. He shot 60 percent from the field and 58 percent from the 3-point line.

In the substate championship win over Bishop Garrigan, Koopman suffered a leg injury. He returned for the state quarterfinals, putting on an incredible display by scoring 18 points vs. Woodbine, but missed much of the semifinal loss to Madrid.

“Jakob is a kid who gives 100 percent in each and every practice, so you know exactly what you are going to get from him in games,” Kochendorfer said. “He is such an integral part of everything we

Gaels’ goal is to climb the ladder

dbecker@messengernews.net

CJ Tracy feels this could be the year for his St. Edmond girls to put it all together.

The Gaels won eight games last season, the most for the program since 2016-17. They reached the Class 1A regional semifinals, losing a double-overtime heartbreaker on the road.

Now, with all but three players back from that roster, the 202526 season is shaping up to be a favorable one for St. Edmond.

Seniors Ava Andrew, Maggie Flaherty, Anna Lursen and Ava Underberg lead the experienced roster, with juniors Choloe Palmer, Sophia Schlienz, Abby Huss, Avenlee Hayek, Evie Heldorfer, Morgan Lewis and Elizabeth Tiernan joining them.

Lursen, Huss and Palmer were

all regular starters a year ago, and Underberg was a starter as a sophomore before missing last season with an injury. Schlienz has starting experience under her belt as well, while Flaherty, Heldorfer and Lewis each played in at least 11 games a season ago.

Sophomores Olivia Andrew, Ava Bradley, Kennedy Carlson and Jade Rock, along with freshmen Eden Horn, Grace Schlegel and Ellasyn Whitmore complete the varsity roster.

Andrew, Bradley and Rock were all part of the rotation as ninth-graders a year ago, while Horn is coming off an allconference volleyball season.

“You can’t overstate just how important experience is,” Tracy said. “We have it with the girls coming back. They are all great leaders who have been around the program, been around what I want to do as a coach, and know the

expectations we have for them.

“They are helping guide the younger players along and really just have a high basketball IQ.”

Lursen, who recently committed to the University of South Dakota to run track, is a four-year starter. She pulled down an incredible 257 rebounds last year, which ranked second in the NCC, adding 101 points, 88 steals and 75 assists.

“Anna is a special kid,” Tracy said. “She has shown what she can do on the basketball court, the track, the volleyball court this past fall and in cross country before.”

Palmer finished as the leading scorer for the 2025-26 St. Edmond squad with 256 points. She also dished out a team-high 86 assists with 154 rebounds, 74 steals and 12 blocked shots.

“Chloe really worked hard to improve in several key areas over the summer,” Tracy said. “She

has gotten stronger and improved her shooting; I’m excited to see the kind of season she has.”

Huss knocked down 35 triples a season ago, scoring 129 points with 50 rebounds, 19 assists and 12 blocked shots. Schlienz added 57 points with 65 rebounds, 32 assists and 14 steals, as Underberg tallied 49 points with 67 rebounds and 13 blocks two season ago.

“We had a really good summer,” Tracy said. “Many of the girls came to open gyms, we played at a shootout in Newell and competed very well. We’ve had a fall league where several of the girls have been showing up between other sports.

“As a coaching staff, we saw a lot of really good things that got us excited for the season.”

Dodgers strive to maintain excellence

Dreshaun Ross has the chance to put one final stamp on what is already one of the school’s most historic wrestling careers.

The Fort Dodge senior is chasing his fourth state championship — a feat accomplished by only one other Dodger and 33 times in Iowa state history.

The future Oklahoma State Cowboy will be competing alongside four other returning state qualifiers for the Dodgers, who look to send head coach Bobby Thompson out with a flurry.

“Dreshaun is bigger, quicker and stronger, and he’s always focused,” Thompson said. “He has bigger things on the horizon and this (state championship) is

actually a smaller achievement in the grand scheme of things, which is what makes him special.

“When Dreshaun goes to Oklahoma State, he’ll have the same mentality. Always focused on bigger and better.”

Thompson, who enters his 21st season as Fort Dodge head coach, will retire after this year.

“It’s time,” Thompson said. “No matter when I do it, I know it will be tough. I’m going to miss all the relationships with the kids. For 37 years, I’ve been coaching wrestling. And I’m pretty happy with where I’m at.”

Three-time senior state qualifiers Jesse Egli and Rylee Brown, two-time junior qualifier

Trace Rial and sophomore

Damien Yeoman, who was inside Wells Fargo Arena as a rookie, all return. Two-time state qualifier

Sam Davidson will also be back

in the mix after missing out last year.

The Dodgers are without fifthplace state medalist and junior Joe Constable, who is now enrolled at Humboldt High School.

“We have seniors who are really good kids, and veterans that we can lean on to teach the younger ones,” Thompson said.

“The last few years we have been working through the COVID cycle with our numbers. That’s turning around now, with a big freshman class last year and another one this season.

“The veterans will teach these young kids about Dodger trust and representing everyone on that (state) wall. They’re joining a family and representing the community on and off the mat.”

With his 6-foot-4 stature and chiseled frame, Ross’ presence is felt once he hits the mat. He has

Ross has only dropped two matches total in high school, and one within the state of Iowa. He fell to McCrae Hagarty, who is currently a sophomore at Iowa State, and Cole Mirasola, now a redshirt freshman for top-ranked Penn State.

“Dreshaun has been in the spotlight for a long time because of his size and athleticism,” Thompson said. “He has great humility and knows how to stay focused and keep his eyes on the prize.”

The race for team medals is always tough at the top, but Thompson believes the Dodgers have the potential to make a chase.

Numbers key as Dodgers continue to climb

cjohnson@messengernews.net

The story may be small so far, but the Fort Dodge girls wrestling team is adding another a new chapter to the school’s record book.

As the Dodgers enter their third season as a sanctioned sport, Mariaha Benedict and her teammates keep improving and growing.

Benedict, already the school’s career win leader (127-29) before her senior year even begins, will try to become the Dodgers’ second four-time state qualifier.

“We just have to keep Mariaha even-keel and not let her emotions get too high or too low with wins and losses,” FDSH head coach Jon Koenig said. “She is a great

kid who gets good grades, works out on top of practice and puts in the time and effort.

“This is her last year of high school wrestling before going to Northwestern (College in Orange City), and she is chasing a state title. She wants to stay in the moment and get to the top of that podium.”

Last season, Benedict and thenfreshman Makayla Liska became the Dodgers’ second and third state medalists behind Alexis Ross’ four medals: a bronze, two silvers and a championship.

“Mariaha is a big part of our room,” Koenig said. “We use her a lot for examples and a lot of girls look at her to see how hard she is going.

“Wrestling will literally take the most out of you from your time, body and mind.”

The senior, who earned her first medal a year ago with a fifthplace performance, will help lead a packed roster. The Dodgers enter a new level to the program, with 20 girls on the squad. The goal now is to compete not for just individual wins, but dual victories as well.

In the early part of this season, Benedict started 9-0. Koenig likes where his program is sitting. with three different levels to his program.

Benedict, sophomore Brooklyn Nelson and Liska make up the main returnees for Fort Dodge.

“Brooklyn has a chip on her shoulder and it will go with her for the entire season,” Koenig said. “She was so close to the state tournament, and now wants to get there.

“For the new girls, they have to

Benedict will start off the season at 135 pounds, while Liska’s status is up in the air as she is fighting through some injuries.

Liska placed sixth at state a year ago, with a record of 37-14.

“Makayla did a great job last year,” Koenig said. “We are hoping and praying that we can have her this year and she will bounce back with the same results as last year.

“We just don’t know how much we’ll have her this season.”

Nelson compiled a record of 2713 and placed third at regionals, just missing a state spot.

Dodgers eager to get rolling at the lanes

cjohnson@messengernews.net

The Fort Dodge bowling teams will look to progress as the season goes on, with different style of lineups hitting the lanes.

The Dodger boys have 18 bowlers, returning six letterwinners. The smaller girls lineup of eight has three starters back and a new group with potential.

Seniors Slade Babb, Blake Seeman, Kody VanValkenburg, Leland Sassman, Shadin Roach and sophomore Bailen Peterson return to the Dodger lineup.

The lone graduate for the Dodgers was Trenton Beck, who was one of last year’s leaders.

Babb paces the Dodgers a year after a 167

average. Babb started last year with his best series right out of the gate, rolling a 519 with games of 243 and 276.

“These boys have been anxious to get the season underway and have hopes to put up some good scores this year,” said FDSH boys head coach Julie Ulrich. “Slade is our highest average returning and this will be his third year on the varsity roster and I am looking for him to continue to be our leader.

“Slade loves the sport of bowling and puts in a lot of time practicing in the offseason. He is our most positive teammate and will do whatever he can to encourage his teammates to be successful.”

Seeman averaged a 157, followed by Roach (152), Van Valkenburg (147), Peterson (138) and Sassman (136).

“Blake, Kody, Shadin and Leland are

wanting to have a big senior year and I look for them to also give us some good numbers this season,” Ulrich said. “All of the returners have potential, and it’s going to take elevating our scores across the board as a team in order to see more success than the 2-8 dual record we posted.

“Consistency was an issue last year. The boys need to be able to score well in both games in order for us to really be competitive in our district. “We will continue to focus a lot on spare shooting in practice as that is an area the boys need to shore up.”

Also returning for the Dodgers are seniors Liam Powers, Orrin Rurup, Jaxton Jones, Sam Salvatore and Aidan Russell.

Dodgers working hard, well together

The chemistry and camaraderie are already established for the Fort Dodge boys swim team.

Now, head coach Ashley Beaumont is able to focus on the mechanics that will make the Dodgers a better squad before all is said and done.

Beaumont knows her 2025-26 squad is eager to learn and support each other. What that will look like in live varsity meets remains to be seen.

“Now it’s a matter of putting all of the pieces together and figuring out who best fits where in the lineup. We’re at our starting point (in the preseason) and we’ll make the changes and adjustments as (the year) goes.”

Senior Aiden Seagren is joined by classmates Ayden Hernandez, Samuel Brockbank, Owen Gruver and Jaxson Lowrey-Jones as returning letterwinners.

“Aiden trained a lot in the offseason and was even a manager for the girls program (in the fall)

“It’s a really good group to work with — one of the best I can remember here,” said Beaumont, who is in her eighth season as head coach. “They’re very positive and close-knit. It’s a friendship that goes beyond the pool, which has been great to see.

“Ayden joined the summer program and, like Aiden, put a lot of time in to be more (varsity ready). And Owen is a kid who

showed up as a freshman and didn’t even know how to swim. He’s an inspiration to those who don’t think you can get to this point through hard work.”

Beaumont indicated that junior Jayden Stanley and sophomores Trevor Roberts and David Nelson are also in the mix to fill varsity roles. Roberts is a student at Humboldt; Nelson is at Manson Northwest Webster.

In addition to this year’s seniors, Stanley, Roberts, Nelson, junior Brek Pingel and sophomore Chance Grimm (Webster City) earned varsity letters last winter.

“We’re focusing right now on individual events a little more than the relays,” Beaumont said. “We

have 16 guys total, but we have some work to do as far as figuring out who will fill what role in the weeks to come.

“We had a solid senior class last year, so we’re still in that transition period as far as this group’s identity.”

Austin Jorgensen will again serve as Beaumont’s assistant.

Seniors Gracie Harvey and Evan Potter join junior Karlee Pearson as team managers; Harvey and Pearson were standouts on the girls’ squad this past fall.

The Dodgers open their season at Carroll on Tuesday. The annual Rusty Garst FDSH Invitational is set for Jan. 17.

“We will be right there in the dogfight for a team trophy (Top-3),” Thompson said. “We’re going to fight and go at it with everything we have.”

LOWER WEIGHTS

The Dodgers will pack a punch for opposing teams at the lower weights, with a strong newcomer and two returning state qualifiers right out of the gate.

Freshman Knox Ayala, the youngest brother of three-time state champion and four-time finalist Drake Ayala as well as multi-time finalist Dru Ayala, will jump right in at 106 pounds.

“Knox comes in highly touted and has wrestled in a lot of matches around the country,” Thompson said. “He will be a little undersized, but he’s competed in some big tournaments.”

Also in the mix is freshmen Edgar Juarez and Carter Ashten.

Damien Yeoman made a splash last season and wrestled up a weight. He will stay at 113 this year.

Yeoman was 33-19 as a freshman.

“Damien looks good coming off of shoulder surgery,” Thompson said. “He was undersized last year and has gotten bigger and stronger.”

Also looking for time at 113 will be freshman Alex Lureios and sophomore Reeve Wood.

Rial, the oldest son of two-time Fort Dodge state champion Mark Rial, went 23-7 last season and lost in the blood round at state. He is 49-31 in his two-year stint, and now has the spot at 120 pounds.

“Trace has really sprouted up,” Thompson said. “I’ve seen a lot of growth out of Trace size-wise and with his attitude. He narrowly missed last year and should have been on the podium. I expect a big season out of him.

“It will definitely be nice to start duals and tournaments with these guys. It’s also good in the room because they complement each other and are great workout partners.”

Freshman Aaron Perez and Matias Lacina, along with sophomores Oseas Lopes and Leyan Frometa, are also at 120.

At 126 will be sophomore Drake Hayes, who saw varsity action last season. Also in the mix are freshmen Leighton McCrady, Brody Reimers and Lane Hansen.

— the younger brother of 2024 state champion Koy Davidson — will look to end his career with three state trips and build on his career mark of 43-29 at 132.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Sammy.

He’s had a great turnaround,” Thompson said. “He has developed in the classroom, and there is a different spark in his eye.

“Sometimes coaching isn’t just about coaching — it’s about seeing kids succeed and becoming good adults and contributors.”

Sophomore Damarion Morgan and freshmen Grayson Riley and Carlos Guzman are also at 132.

MIDDLE WEIGHTS

Senior Hunter Kasperbauer is the frontrunner at 138. He moves up from 120, where he picked up 10 victories a year ago.

Flanking Kasperbauer will be classmate Angel Sandoval, juniors Rylan Crouse and Keaton Hawkins, sophomores Talan

Pline and Mason Zuspann, and freshman Andres Perez.

“We have seven kids at 138, but Hunter is the top guy,” Thompson said. “He’s has grown and put some size on.”

Sophomore Amari McCaleb, who saw varsity mat time last year in earning 12 wins, is at 144 with sophomores Grant Maxson and Fernando Ortega.

“Amari looks confident,” Thompson said. “He looks good and aggressive. This could be a big year for him.”

There isn’t a lot of experience at 150 pounds, but there are a number of potential candidates.

Junior Zander Jones, sophomores Brexton Hines, Kadince Kisler and Kameryn Norris, and Isaiah Hernandez Gallegos are all possibilities.

Brown will look to have a breakout season at 157 pounds for the Dodgers, as the three-time state qualifier is looking to reach the medal stand as a senior.

Brown is 90-63 in his career. He will be

joined at 157 by Jaysawn Jackson.

“Rylee is a three-time qualifier and has lost twice in the blood round,” Thompson said. “Rylee has looked solid so far.”

Senior Caiden Fraher will return and compete at 165 after being out with an injury a year ago. Sophomore Javier Bacillas is also at that weight.

“Caiden is the frontrunner and has trimmed down,” Thompson said. “He started for us when he was younger but had been out with an injury (in 2024-25).”

UPPER WEIGHTS

The Dodgers will have a little inexperience at 175, paced by freshmen Mykel Benedict, Breyton Cervetti and sophomore Jesus Guillen.

Egli, the youngest of the Egli brothers (Duke, Jonah, Levi and Ben) is hungry to reach the medal stand.

Messenger photo by Britt Kudla JESSE EGLI competes in the Dodger gym last season. Egli is a three-time state qualifier for the Dodgers heading into his senior campaign.

“Jesse has been knocking on the door without a doubt,” Thompson said. “He’s hungry to get down to state again and make some noise.

“He wants to be able to walk into our room and see his name on the wall with his brothers.”

Sophomore Cael Adams is the top prospect at 215 pounds. Joining Adams will be freshmen Khian Hovey and Jesse Florez.

“Cael is athletic and goes hard,” Thompson said. “He’ll be a great fit there and will give us two solid guys on the back (end of the lineup).”

Ross bumps up to 285, building on a 20-win campaign a year ago in a shortened season at 215. Ross sat most of the season recovering from shoulder surgery.

Last year the Dodgers brought home the fifth state championship to the Ross household. His younger brother Damarion has one, as well as his sister Alexis. Ross, who is 111-2 overall, was unbeaten in 47 matches as a sophomore.

Flanking Ross will be junior Kellen Crouse.

“Dreshaun will be a leader for these younger guys,” Thompson said. “We have seven seniors and 34 underclassmen.

“He’s a great leader and a great person to be around

Williams said. “We can’t have mental lapses or dry spells on either end of the court. We have to just keep plugging away and have short memories (as a reaction to) both the good and the bad.

“Rebounding and defense is all about effort. What kind of sacrifices are you willing to make to contribute to that team in ways that will pay off beyond just shooting and scoring?”

Thompson doesn’t shy away from loading the schedule and not worrying as much about wins and losses. The tough competition prepares the wrestlers for later in the year.

The first part of December brings out the ultracompetitive Dan Gabel Donnybrook, the Iowa City Duals and the Don Miller Invitational.

The Dodgers picked up a tournament in Kansas Cityduring the first part of January, as well as the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawk Invite and the Ed Winger Invitational in Urbandale.

“We will go down and face Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids Prairie and they’re always loaded,” Thompson said. “Then the Donnybrook, which is the toughest tournament in the nation.

“The Don Miller Invitational in the last part of 2025, is always important to us.”

Joining the program is senior Tyson Squire, junior Eli Johnson, sophomore Sawyer Evans and freshmen

Holden Doster, Jace Carlson, Jake Pingel and Latrell Clark.

“I saw several positives in the few practices we have had,” Ulrich said. “Our new bowlers were eager to start practice and were very coachable. Jace Carlson and Jake Pingel bring experience from being YABA junior bowlers, and I feel good about Holden Doster and Eli Johnson improving and being able to help us out as well.

“I am excited to get to work and grow as a group so that come postseason, we can put ourselves in a place to make it back to the state tournament.”

For the Dodger girls, seniors Calli Graves and Sammantha Welter, along with junior Joely Gilbert were a big part of Fort Dodge’s season last year.

“We have high expectations for Calli and Sammantha,” said FDSH head coach Nick Vinson.

“They were on the state qualifying team, so I think that will help them step into leadership roles.”

Graves is back with the highest average at 143 and Welter sported a 140 per game. Graves had a high

series of 363 and Welter’s was a 318. Graves had a high game of 204 and Welters had a 178.

“We have a pretty young team, so it’s going to take some time,” Vinson said.

“These two will lead, and we want to be able to teach the younger kids.”

Also looking to contribute will be sophomore Cierra Robell. Freshmen Ara Eilas, Maryah McDonald, Liva Kalvig and Kaylie Guthrie

will hope to burst into the lineup and help with depth.

“Ara is a hard worker and she was a big reason we won our first meet,” Vinson said.

“She stays locked in and competes. She marked five out of the last six frames of the night.”

Vinson knows it will take some time, but sees a lot of potential in his squad.

“We will see where we can go with this group,” Vinson said. “They listen

and they’re not afraid to work.”

Vinson is hoping in the team race with the baker’s format, the Dodgers will be able to put some strong scores up as the winter months arrive.

“When it comes to the team race, I think we have potential,” Vinson said. “These girls have the ability to mark, so working in the baker’s format, we can put up some good scores.”

“Those three groups are the pieces to the puzzle. Now we have to get the pieces out of the box and put it together.”

Freshman Shayley Butrick, the younger sister of former Fort Dodge state qualifier Kane Butrick, has gained mat experience after placing third at AAU state as an eighth grader. Butrick has already had a strong start to the season, winning her first nine matches.

Classmate Ava Potter, who placed eighth at preseason nationals, has won her first eight matches as a Dodger as well.

Lydia Cowell, another freshman who is the younger sister of former FDSH state medalists and qualifiers Brooks Cowell, Lane Cowell and Bo Cowell, will be on the mat.

The rest of the freshman class is made up of Adalyn Ford, Greyson Hinds, Tori Jakeman, Ava Osorio, Emma Potter, Alyson Scwanz, Ida Simpson and McKaila Yerington.

Koenig also has a large group of girls who are new to competitive wrestling.

“We have a team of basically three different groups,” Koenig said. “We have our three returnees; a big freshman group, which has been competing at the middle school level; and a big group of girls new to wrestling.”

There won’t be as many holes in the Dodger lineup, as Fort Dodge has already won two duals early in the year.

“I’m really excited about this freshman class,” Koenig said. “They’ve been doing this the last couple of years. They are growing and getting better.

“Now we have to get the pieces out of the box and put it together.”

Dodger girls wrestling coach

“I see the potential in a lot of them. Shayley and Ava have done a lot in wrestling, competing in Florida at AAU.”

Once again the Dodgers will have a tough schedule, something Koenig takes pride in.

“After the break (Thanksgiving) it gets harder, going to the Donnybrook, Waverly and Council Bluffs, and our Fort Dodge Girls Invitational,” Koenig said.

“Once January, starts we have about one meet a week. We’ve done that on purpose (to pace the stretch run), but we still get a lot of matches and records won’t matter.

“We just want the kids to buy in and believe in the program. It’s definitely going to be harder for us this year without (the late) Aaron Miller (an assistant middle school principal and former teacher who died in an automobile accident last January). He was always at the wrestling meets for boys and girls (Miller was a former Dodger wrestler), and we will miss having him there. He was a great guy with a big heart.” Koenig will be assisted by Ben Schnurr. Corey Moody and Kiley O’Leary head up the middle school program.

COUGAR BOYS

The need for newcomers to step into key roles will be critical for the Manson Northwest Webster boys this winter.

Gone from a team that made a run to a substate final last year are graduated leading scorers Logan Moline, Kelan Koval and Matt Condon, along with Broc Patzner and Grant Pohlman.

Juniors Coy Moline and Charlie Sturgis return. Moline played in all 25 games and Sturgis in 24 last year.

Moline scored 178 points with 82 rebounds, 33 assists and 26 steals. Sturgis added 108 points, 71 rebounds, 25 assists and 22 steals.

“We are going to be a team with a lot of upperclassmen playing, but relatively few with varsity experience,” MNW head coach Caleb Wubben said. “This means we will have a bit of a learning curve as we start the season and the guys adjust to playing at the varsity level.

“I’m confident in our ability to adjust and our returning letterwinners to lead us forward. I’m really excited to see what these guys accomplish this season.”

Keegan Reis, a senior, joins juniors Isaiah Daggett and Aiden Nelson, and sophomore Logan Salazar as players taking on increased roles. Daggett played in 19 games last year, while Reis and

Nelson saw action in 12 each.

“We will lean heavily on Coy and Charlie,” Wubben said. “Both played crucial roles for us last season and really gave us a boost off the bench. I am also excited to see Isaiah step into a bigger role. We will look to him to help us get into our offense and look to him as well to be a big contributor on the offensive end.

“Keegan and Aiden are two other upperclassmen who will be post players that will be called on to contribute.”

One starter and four other letterwinners are back for the Manson Northwest Webster girls this season.

Last year, the Cougars went 6-17 under Emily Wolfe, who was in her first season as head coach.

Junior Addison Kraft returns to the starting lineup, as she is joined by Addison McCullough, Makayla Reekers, Bellah Aquino and Alison Nimke.

McCullough, a senior, posted 4.5 points and over three rebounds per game, while Kraft added three points and 2.5 assists.

Sophomore Emery Pelz and freshmen Leighton Daggett, Grace Beneke and Jorden Zehr

COUGAR WRESTLING

A familiar face to many of the wrestlers on the Manson Northwest Webster team will serve as head coach this season, as Josh Anderson takes over.

Anderson spent the past 14 years working with the MNW middle school program.

He has an experienced group back, led by six senior letterwinners. Keaton Wittrock and Mason Anderson are the main pieces.

“We have a lot of returning experience,” Anderson said. “I think that having such a large group of letterwinners and experienced wrestlers will help us to more success as a team.

“I feel we will improve on our individual wins as well as our dual wins, and I think we have a good chance of putting some wrestlers through to the state tournament.”

Wittrock owns a career record of 75-48 while Anderson has an 81-45 mark. Fellow seniors Gavin Burton, Noah Berger, Hunter Newman and Oryan Hanson join them.

Junior letterwinners include Tristan Thompson, Eli Schoon, Kale Kraft, Elliot Droste and Jaggar Wolfe, as sophomores Logan Thoma, Taylen Secory, Wyatt Lahr and Owen Hanson got their feet wet last year.

“Our success will come by getting better at basics,” Anderson said. “With our experience, the key will be winning small battles on the mats and improving our attention to detail within our matches.”

SOUTHEAST

JAGUAR BOYS

With several new players in key roles, Southeast Valley head coach Kyle Johnson is looking forward to seeing how it all comes together this winter.

The Jaguars won 12 games last year and finished sixth overall in the Twin Lakes Conference.

Junior Casey Hanson is the lone returning starter, but nine others saw key minutes a year ago and return.

Hanson posted eight points with three assists and two rebounds per game. He is flanked by classmates Logan Jaeschke, Karson Roper, Ian Brunner, Bryce Harrison, Hayden Butrick and Hayden Greene, as seniors Karson Roper, Cornell Lowery and Lincoln Akins round out the group of returning letterwinners.

“The kids should play well with each other,” Johnson said. “We are hoping to finish in the top-half of the conference again.

Hanson started 14 games last winter, shooting almost 49 percent from the field with 13 made 3-pointers. Jaeschke saw action in all 23 games, recording 80 points with 135 rebounds, 39 steals and 35 assists while Field played in 18 games, Brunner and Roper in 13, and Harrison in 11.

“We should have a strong rotation with nice depth,” Johnson said. “But a lot of those kids have not logged varsity minutes yet.”

JAGUAR GIRLS

Six players with varsity experience return for Kevin Mills as he looks to flip the script for the Southeast Valley girls this winter.

Lundquist, Leah Mills and Delaney Sittig.

“Our seniors will need to provide good verbal leadership and set solid examples through their work ethic,” Mills said. “We work toward being a gritty defensive team.”

Camryn Lane averaged over seven points with two rebounds and two assists per game last year for the Jaguars, and Sage Lane added three points and three rebounds. Mills posted over two points and nearly six boards a night.

Southeast Valley will be tested nightly within the Twin Lakes Conference, as the league features contenders Newell-Fonda, Emmetsburg and Pocahontas Area.

“The Twin Lakes Conference will be full of talent again this year,” Mills said. “Newell-Fonda will be on the top as they are loaded with talent again and have a talented freshman class, Emmetsburg will be a top competitor and GTRA will be building with nine

top players back.”

JAGUAR WRESTLING

Jeff Miller has seven key wrestlers back as he enters his 33rd season coaching with Southeast Valley.

Senior Colin Johnson won 15 matches a year ago and is joined by juniors Kyle Eastman and Evan Kuhn, along with sophomores Wyatt Blair, Colton Haug, Caden Milham and Keelan Wellman.

“Our young wrestlers will need to once again provide some leadership,” Miller said. “We are lacking upperclassmen to fill that role.”

Blair was 41-8 a season ago as a freshman while Wellman won 20 matches, Haug 17 and Eastman 15.

“The young Jaguars will look to try and fill each weight class to give him a chance in winning dual meets,” Miller said.

HUMBOLDT

WILDCAT BOYS

The Humboldt boys will be under the new direction of Ryan O’Hern this winter, as the former Eagle Grove and Iowa Central standout takes over for Jason Thurm.

O’Hern, a multi-sport standout in high school, played basketball at Iowa Central for legendary head coach Dennis Pilcher before finishing his career at Iowa Wesleyan.

He has three letterwinners and one starter back, led by senior Jackson Flaherty, who averaged almost nine points, four rebounds and three assists per game.

Classmates Valley Davis and Chase Flaherty are letterwinners back, as Davis posted six points and five rebounds while Flaherty added five points and three assists.

“Jackson, Valley and Chase will lead the way and take on bigger roles,” O’Hern said. “The newcomers to varsity were successful at the junior varsity level and gained valuable experience in our summer shootout games.

“Our goal is to be competitive every night out, put ourselves in position to have a chance to win in the last four minutes of the game and to be playing our best basketball heading into the postseason.”

In five years coaching at West

Burlington, O’Hern posted a record of 75-40 overall.

Several newcomers will be key to the success, including seniors Jacob Girres, Zach Theesefeld, Landyn Dencklau, Nathan Lynch and Karson Rubel. They are joined by juniors Cade Birdsell, Levi Rieck, Cooper Theesefeld, Avyon Sutterfield and Chase Hansen, along with sophomore Dane Clark.

“We will be a quick, athletic team that has a chance to create turnovers with our full-court and half-court defenses,” O’Hern said. “We will continue to play an up-tempo style of offense that will create layups and threepointers.”

WILDCAT GIRLS

The Humboldt girls are banking on three key letterwinners returning to help them continue to stay near the top of the North Central Conference.

Senior Ava Fischer is the lone starter back, as she is joined by classmate Payton Elman and junior Jada Vandewalle.

The Wildcats went 12-11 last year and 7-5 in the NCC, placing third overall.

Fischer posted over 13 points, nearly five rebounds and 1.5

“We hope to compete for a conference title,” Humboldt head coach Rodd Mooney said. “For that to happen, we will have to successfully integrate our new players with our players who are returning.”

Fischer was a first team all-NCC selection last year, finishing third in the league in made 3-pointers.

“We hope to shoot the ball well,” Mooney said, “and play disruptive defense.”

WILDCAT WRESTLING

Chad Beaman is closing in on 500 career dual wins as the veteran leader of the Humboldt wrestling team looks poised for another successful season.

Beaman, who has won 340 of his 496 duals with the Wildcats, returns two-time

state medalist Broedy Hendricks and state qualifier Jaxon Kirchhoff this year from a roster that won 18 duals and three tournament titles a year ago.

Eight other letterwinners are back in Henry Kramer, Braden Downs, Caleb Vinsand, Carson Ireland, Spencer Scranton, Ayden Fiengo, Dylan Frideres and Jonathan Hayden.

Among the newcomers to the team is Joe Constable, who finished fifth at heavyweight for Fort Dodge in Class 3A last year, and AAU standouts Tate Halverson and Karson Reinhardt.

Constable is a junior; Halverson and Reinhardt are freshmen.

Hendricks, a junior, has placed second and fourth at state, going 45-5 last season. Kirchhoff, also a junior, was 32-16 a year ago in his run to state.

INDIAN BOYS

The Pocahontas Area boys return leading scorer Karson Welander and three seniors who all started last year on the hardwood for head coach Avery Busta.

Welander, a sophomore, posted nearly 14 points with 4.5 rebounds and three assists per game last year. He shot 33 percent from the 3-point line and also averaged over two steals a night.

Seniors Christian Valenzuela, Collin Dreith and Jack Gerdes all join him in the starting rotation. Valenzuela averaged eight points, 3.5 rebounds and three assists per contest last winter; Dreith contributed seven points and three rebounds; and Gerdes added three points, two rebounds and an assist.

“The expectation is to play hard and play fast,” said Busta, who begins his second season leading the program. “Guys need to be committed to pushing each other and holding each other accountable every practice and game.

“This team will be young, but does have experience.”

The Indians are seeking their first winning season since going 17-7 in 2018-19.

POCAHONTAS AREA

INDIAN GIRLS

Three starters and three more letterwinners are back to lead the Pocahontas Area girls into the year.

Seniors Kristin Axman, Alayna Kakacek and Khloe Mefferd were all starters a year ago when the Indians won 19 games and finished second in the Twin Lakes Conference.

Kakacek posted 10 points and four rebounds a night; Mefferd added almost nine points and eight rebounds; and Axman chipped in 6.5 points, two rebounds and nearly two assists.

“We return a strong core of five seniors with a lot of experience,”

PAC head coach Robert Maske said.

“I am excited to push this extremely motivated group. I believe we are in a great position to build on the success we had last year.”

Seniors Delaney Janssen and Halee Hauswirth, as well as sophomore Dani Dreith, also return. Dreith averaged over seven points per game as a freshman; Hauswirth added five points and four rebounds. Janssen three points with three boards.

“We have six different girls who

SOUTH CENTRAL CALHOUN

TITAN BOYS

A trio of returning starters are back for South Central Calhoun boys head coach Clive Clark, who has spent the past four-plus decades on the sidelines.

Senior Charlie Nattress is joined by juniors Evan Myers and Garrett Krause. The Titans won 13 games last year and finished fourth in the Twin Lakes Conference.

Nattress recorded 202 points with 149 rebounds, 40 assists and 32 steals, Myers added 247 points, 134 rebounds, 31 assists and 30 steals, with Krause contributing 178 points, 42 steals, 35 rebounds and 23 assists.

Krause also blocked 10 shots last year and sank 36 three-pointers.

South Central Calhoun has won at least 10 games each of the past seven seasons and 12 of the past 13 overall.

TITAN GIRLS

Three starters and another letterwinner return for the South Central Calhoun girls this winter on the hardwood.

Juniors Blair Schleisman, Macie Dorman and Sadie Wheelock were all starters last year as the Titans won 10 games and finished fifth in the Twin Lakes Conference. Classmate Ailey Korleski also saw valuable time on the court.

Schleisman averaged 12 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore, Dormana nd Wheelock each contributed six points and Korleski three.

Wheelock also grabbed nearly six rebounds per game and Dorman four.

TITAN WRESTLING

It will be a special season on the mats for South Central Calhoun, as they honor fallen wrestler Cadyn Ogden. Ogden passed away earlier this year, and the Titans are dedicating the season in his name. Ogden won 10 matches as a freshman.

A total of 17 letterwinners are back for co-head coaches Lance Schultz and Colin Corey, led by seniors Jace Pedersen and Wyatt Mernka. Pedersen qualified for state last year and won 23 matches, as Mernka missed the season with an injury, but had 20 victories as a sophomore.

Karson Wuebker and Cooper Nattress are back with state experience, as Wuebker finished fifth as a freshman. Wuebker won 53 matches overall and earned 32 falls while Nattress won 44 matches including 24 falls.

Wuebker and Pedersen both claimed Twin Lakes Conference titles a year ago, as Nattress and Brayden Werneburg were runner-ups.

“Our seniors will be our key,” Schultz said. “Their leadership with what they say and do will take us as far as they want this team to go. Staying healthy will also be important, as our depth isn’t great at some weights.

ALGONA

BULLDOG BOYS

The Algona boys return a handful of key pieces from a season ago when they won eight games overall.

That includes seniors Evan Allie, Jaxon Eischen and Levi Walker, along with junior Nathan Manske and freshman Jacob Burns.

Allie, Burns, Manske and Eischen were starters alongside Ben Helmers, who has graduated, taking his team-leading 554 points with him.

Manske tallied 210 points with 135 rebounds, 42 assists and 35 steals, Allie had 175 points with 59 steals, and Burns scored 111 points with 80 rebounds, 47 assists and 29 steals.

BULLDOG GIRLS

Coming off a 20-win season that included an undefeated run to the North Central Conference title, the Algona girls will be counting on several new players to fill big holes.

Junior Hayden McLaughlin is the lone returning starter, as classmates BellaJo Dunning, Maya Lentz, Taylor VanOtterloo and Gabby Venteicher all gained valuable varsity time last year.

“We have a lot of changes to our roster,” Algona head coach Noel McLaughlin said. “We feel we have the talent and depth to be at the top of the conference again. Our goal is to win the NCC and get to the regional final for a fourth year in a row.”

Emma Spear, Cassidy Bierstedt, Malea Davis, Makenna Elsbecker, Lainey Steuk and Kate Limbaugh are all newcomers looking to carve out roles. Limbaugh, a freshman, was an all-NCC volleyball player this past fall.

“Hayden will be called on to do more this year,” McLaughlin said. “BellaJo and Maya will provide scoring, Taylor, Emma and Gabby are all great defenders that like to play at a fast pace.

McLaughlin scored 252 points last year with 120 rebounds, 22 steals, 20 assists and 10 blocks, sinking 24 three-pointers. VanOtterloo, Lentz and Dunning each played in all 24 games while Venteicher played in 12 and Spear saw action in 10.

BULLDOG WRESTLING

Last winter, Algona claimed the Class 2A state duals title, as the Bulldogs secured a perfect 17-0 record on the mats. Now, they look to keep that run going behind 11 letterwinners including eight state qualifiers.

Cody Alesch and Brian Morgan will serve as co-head coaches, replacing Nick Kuecker. Alesch was the head coach at GTRA and Iowa Lakes Community College before while Morgan previously led Algona for 13 seasons, winning 116 duals.

Alesch coached three national champions, eight finalists and 24 All-Americans at Iowa Lakes. Both are graduates of Wartburg College.

“We have a well balanced team with lots of experience and guys who have had success on junior varsity,” Alesch said. “They have been waiting for their opportunity.

“We will be a solid dual team again this year, as we have depth and are solid across all weights.”

Senior Barrett Morgan is a two-time state medalist, as classmate Taevyn Zinnel also earned a medal at state. Teague Alesch, Tommy Zabka, CJ McGregor, Carter McGregor, Brody Shipler and Tayten Rummel are all returning qualifiers from either last year or two seasons ago.

Brooks Morgan won a North Central Conference title a season ago, while both Will Limbaugh and Cael Rotert had winning records in limited mat time.

BISHOP GARRIGAN

GOLDEN BEAR BOYS

Fresh off another strong football season, the Bishop Garrigan boys return four key players from a 21-win team a season ago.

The Golden Bears reached a Class 1A substate final last winter, falling to St. Edmond. They went 21-4 overall and finished 16-2 in the Top of Iowa West division.

Back for co-head coaches Mark Meister and Roger Froehlich are seniors Carter Schwab, Amaury Thomas and Tate Foertsch, along with juniors Michael Joyce and Madden Miller.

Joyce is the leading returning scorer, posting 15 points with four assists and two rebounds a night. Schwab added 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Thomas contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Foertsch, a three-year starter at quarterback for the Golden Bears, chipped in seven points, four assists and three rebounds a game.

GOLDEN BEAR GIRLS

The cupboard is stocked and loaded for another big season at Bishop Garrigan.

The Golden Bear girls return four starters off a 23-3 team a year ago, including seniors Emmi Bartolo and Sacha Alesch. They are flanked by junior Graclyn Eastman and sophomore Madelyn Tigges.

Seniors Ava Rothler, Alyssa Haugland and Carley Nielsen all have varsity experience under their belts for head coach Brandon Schwab, who has two state titles and multiple state trips under his belt with Bishop Garrigan.

Last year, the Golden Bears reached the Class 1A semifinals, falling to eventual state champion Council Bluffs St. Albert.

Eastman, a three-year starter, averaged 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds last season as a sophomore, shooting 56 percent from the field. Alesch posted 13 points with three assists and three steals.

Bartolo added 10 points and nearly five assists with two steals per game for Garrigan.

The Golden Bears have won at least 23 games each of the past six seasons.

EAST SAC COUNTY

RAIDER BOYS

The East Sac County boys basketball team is hoping to take the next step back after an eight-win campaign last season.

Prior to that, the Raiders had won double-digit games in 17 straight seasons.

East Sac County will have to replace three productive seniors who led the way a year ago.

Graduates Sam Julin (13.8), Asher Lawler (9.4) and Jack Gullett (8.1) were the main offensive threats for the Raiders. Kade Snyder is the lone returning starter.

Looking to raise their average will be junior Zach Jacobsen, who scored 6.3 points a night last winter, and senior Jordan Ulmer.

RAIDER GIRLS

Former South Central Calhoun standout Josh Dietrich takes over as the head coach of the East Sac County girls this winter.

Dietrich, who went on to play for Buena Vista University, has been an assistant for the Raiders over the past three years.

He inherits a roster with three returning letterwinners, led by starters Sarah Bontrager and Jordin Carroll. Chloe Bieret, a senior like Bontrager and Carroll, is also back.

“We will have an inexperienced group but have promise with some girls who played last year, as well as a few newcomers who have good potential,” Dietrich said. “In order to have a successful season, our

girls need to buy in to practice and in each other.

“If we can do the little things at a high level, it should be a fun year.”

Bontrager posted nine points, four rebounds and three steals per game last year, helping East Sac County win 10 games overall and five in the Twin Lakes Conference.

Carroll added three points and four boards. Bieret added three points.

Sophomore Wendie Veit and freshman Reese Aschinger will be key newcomers looking to provide valuable varsity minutes as a young age.

“Sarah will be the leader of the team,” Dietrich said. “She’s a three-year starter and has improved each season. She’s going to carry a big offensive load. Jordin is a great defender and rebounder.”

RAIDER BOYS WRESTLING

Led by a handful of returning letterwinners, the East Sac County boys wrestling team has high hopes this winter.

Junior Dawson Allen is one of the eight letterwinners back after posting a 29-14 record last year, as Evan Brockman and Seth Donnelson both won 19 matches. Tyler Renze and Kenton Ackerman each hit double digits for victories and return.

“We have high expectations this season,” ESC head coach Nole Bochmann said. “With 22 wrestlers on the

want to do because he does so much.

“He had one practice leading up to state and came out and scored 18 because that’s the kind of kid he is.”

McElroy averaged six points with six assists and four rebounds last season, scoring 18 with three made triples, six assists and five boards in the substate final.

“Jack runs the offense and plays great defense,” Kochendorfer said. “Over the summer, he was really seeing the floor well and battling against some much bigger kids. He never backs down or gets intimidated by the opposition.”

Galles posted 6.6 points with three rebounds per game a season ago, knocking down 16 three-pointers while recording 27 steals.

“Grant does a lot of the little things for us,” Kochendorfer said. “He has really improved his defense and rebounding, and if he can become consistent from the perimeter, that will make us much harder to defend.”

Bargfrede, who committed to Buena Vista University and former Iowa Hawkeye standout Jeff Horner over the summer, had two of his best games in the state tournament a season ago. Despite coming off the bench, he was third on the team at 10 points per game, sinking a team-high 49 triples.

“Carson is a heck of a shooter and really an athletic kid,”

“I do think they know and understand what is expected of them, but they also know they have to prove it all once again on the court.”

ADOLPH KOCHENDORFER

St. Edmond boys basketball coach

Kochendorfer said. “(After transferring from Webster City) it took him a little while to get going just because he hadn’t played much varsity basketball until that point.

“But you saw it late in the season what he was capable of.”

Mericle will take over his sixth-man role after scoring 82 points last year with 30 rebounds, 12 steals and 10 assists. He also made 22 three-pointers.

“Ty is a crazy good three-point shooter,” Kochendorfer said. “He can rebound the basketball, too. We’re working to get him to drive more because he can finish and is strong

Senior Jackson Calvert played in 12 games, junior Jacob Nieland in 15, classmate Griffin Laufersweiler in 13 and sophomore Thomas Ehn in 13 last winter.

“We’ve got a handful of guys battling right now for those next spots off the bench,” Kochendorfer said. “They know they need to rebound and play defense to get on the court.”

St. Edmond went 11-3 in the North Central Conference last year, tying for second with Humboldt behind fellow state qualifier Clear Lake.

“The NCC will be a tough challenge each and every single night,” Kochendorfer said. “Even teams that might not have a great record will be a challenge for us because of the number of kids they can put out there.

“Algona has four starters back, Clear Lake will reload, Clarion-Goldfield/Dows has an entire lineup back, and Humboldt will be good with strong, athletic kids.”

Kochendorfer will be assisted by Mitchel Rasmussen and Pat O’Rourke, as Maddox Shirbroun and Jack Webster serve as student managers.

In his Hall of Fame coaching career here spanning over three decades, Kochendorfer has won 593 games, including 468 with St. Edmond. He has led the program to 10 state appearances all-time.

out and give wrestling a try.

“I’m really excited to see how much he progresses after competing at state last year.”

Anderson is set to bump up to heavyweight, while Rutherford can compete anywhere from 106 pounds up to 120. Knox is expected to wrestle at 175 pounds.

“Grant and Owen have both done a lot of work during the offseason,” McClintock said. “We had a lot of guys at summer workouts that we ran, and we have seen a lot of that hard work in the offseason paying off here early in practice.”

The freshmen class includes Hudson Blunk, Caleb Mosier, Nick Utley, Jace Stanley, Cooper Cokeley and Sam Touney.

“Again, those (freshmen) were at a lot of the open mats we had all summer,” McClintock said. “They are a really good group and it’s exciting to have them for this season and the future. We’ve got to figure out who will wrestle where, but they will give each other great competition in the wrestling room.”

Blunk, Mosier and Utley are all 106 or 113 pounders, Stanley is set for either 113 or 120, Cokeley is at 126, and Touney at either 157 or 165.

“I am a firm believer that champions are made in the offseason,” McClintock said. “We might be a small bunch, but we are tough and these guys have been fighting.

“We know duals are going to be difficult

because of the open weights we’ll have, but don’t ever count us out, because we are going to go out and battle all six minutes.”

The schedule will include some of the top programs in Class 1A and 2A, along with the usual North Central Conference grind that includes defending 2A dual state champion Algona and state contenders Clarion-Goldfield/Dows and Humboldt.

“I love our schedule,” McClintock said. “It’s going to get us ready for the postseason with the kinds of talented teams and individuals we are going to see.”

McClintock retained assistants Greg Nordstrom and Davis Chaudron on his staff, while also adding former two-time Fort Dodge Senior High state champion Triston Lara, who competed for both the University of Northern Iowa and Oregon State University.

“I’m excited having Greg and Davis back,” McClintock said. “And adding someone with the credentials of Triston is just incredible. He’s been great to have in the room and an excellent workout partner for Matthew and everyone else.”

The Gaels will compete in several tournaments, including the Doug Wood Invitational in Manson, Bob Roethler Invitational in Emmetsburg and Jim Kinyon Invitational in Story City before the Christmas break. After, they host the St. Edmond Duals, head to the Loyd Shaffer Invitational in Marion, and have the NCC tournament in Humboldt.

200-point scorers Payton Bradley and Josie Harvey, as some of that is expected to come from Horn, a heralded newcomer.

The brother of current St. Edmond senior all-stater Hunter Horn, Eden Horn, offers Tracy with size he has not had in his five previous years on the sidelines.

“It’s a part of the game that I am excited to be able to take advantage of,” Tracy said. “Eden has worked so hard on her game over the past few years, and it’s definitely paying off. Along with her, both Ellasyn and Grace give us more size, and are also capable girls who can put the ball on the floor, rebound and do a lot of great things for us.

“They are not only going to help us this season, but down the road.”

After going winless for two seasons, the Gaels have won 13 games the last two years, nearly doubling their win total in 2024-25.

“The program is headed in the right direction,” Tracy said. “The girls talked about their goals and what they want to accomplish. They are high, but I’m excited because I really feel like we have the pieces to do it.

“I know the girls have looked at the banners hanging in the renovated gym and see that the last time (St. Edmond) qualified for state was in 1978. They are ready to change that.”

EAGLE GROVE

EAGLE BOYS

Coming off back-to-back seasons with double-digit wins, the Eagle Grove boys return two starters and five other letterwinners who look to keep that streak going.

Juniors Adrian Whipple and Gavin Pedersen lead the charge, as they are joined by Trent Robinson, Issiac Williams, Eli Friedl, Braylon Kling and Camden Sisson for head coach Ryan Pedersen.

“We return a number of players from last year’s team, including a few starters who will need to step up their scoring this season,” Pedersen said. “I’m hoping our other returners will seize the opportunity to make a difference as well.

“Defensively, we must be strong and disciplined. We’ll need to adjust our style of play a bit which means taking care of the basketball rebounding consistently and limiting secondchance points for our opponents.”

Whipple posted almost 10 points with four assists and 3.5 rebounds per game last year as a guard. Pedersen added four points and eight rebounds a night.

Robinson, Williams and Kling saw key minutes on varsity a season ago and will be asked to help replace the loss of production due to graduation.

Monte Friedl is a sophomore that Pedersen is looking to contribute at 6-foot-3.

“Adrian is a capable point guard who can score from the outside and attack the rim. Gavin did a lot of the ‘dirty’ work and we’ll need him to continue that effort while Trenton, Braylon, Issiac and Eli will need to step up and make major contributions.”

EAGLE GIRLS

Head coach Zach Whipple hopes the learning curves experienced last year for his Eagle Grove girls result in better results this season.

The Eagles return all five starters and three more letterwinners, led by sophomores Taytum Edwards and Adalie Pamperin.

Edwards averaged 10.4 points per game last winter and Pamperin added 6.5. They are joined by senior Kendra Schild, junior Holly Anderson and classmate Ellie Lenning in a returning starting five.

Myka Anderson, Azlyn Amonson and Rynn Ettinger all contributed a season ago.

“We are a very young team that has a lot of potential,” Whipple said. “We were in a tough spot last year with so many freshmen playing varsity. In order for us to succeed this season, we have to hit open shots, stay aggressive on defense without fouling and use our length and speed to our See EAGLES, Page

Schild averaged over eight points to lead the Eagles while Lenning chipped in 3.5 points and three boards a night.

EAGLE WRESTLING

State medalist Hayden Schafer and qualifier Jayden Kreitlow lead an experienced Eagle Grove wrestling team into the season.

Schafer scored eighth as a junior last year, finishing the year 44-14 overall. Kreitlow, also a senior this season, won 26 matches and got his second taste of the state tournament.

Dylan Terwilliger, Reece Demuth, Carter Bjorklund, Jackson Babcock, James Harle, Andrew Orozco, Ethan Schrieber

and Hunter Waldo-Martinez are all back with varsity mat time for head coach Aaron Schafer. Terwilliger also has state experience under his belt from his freshman season.

Terwilliger won 38 matches as a sophomore while Waldo-Martinez picked up 34 as a 10th-grader last year. Oroczo and Schreiber each won over 20 matches.

Several key freshmen will be pushing for a spot in the lineup.

“We lost one senior and bring in an experienced group of freshmen,” Parrott said. “We should have a full lineup which will give us a much better chance of winning duals.

“Our upperclassmen must lead on and off the mat. We have great leadership on the team.”

Lane, a junior, led the team in scoring at 18 points per game, adding 9.5 rebounds, two assists and nearly two steals per game. He shot 44 percent from the field.

Lingenfelter and Lomeli each added nine points a game, while Morrical was just behind them at 8.5. Lingenfelter also posted six rebounds and two assists a night, while Morrical averaged 3.5 assists per game.

COWGIRLS

A year after not sending a varsity team to the court, the Clarion-Goldfield/Dows girls are back. The roster includes seniors Sydney Munoz-Cruz and Daniela Rodriguez, along with juniors Jennifer Sarratos and Virginia Serratos.

Filling out the roster will be 10 sophomores and three freshmen.

In 2023-24, the Cowgirls

won three games. None of the current players on the roster were part of that squad.

COWBOY WRESTLING

Cory Yoder takes over as the head wrestling coach for perennial state contender Clarion-Goldfield/Dows this winter.

Yoder — a successful wrestler for his father, John Yoder, at Belmond-Klemme — was an assistant last year as the Cowboys finished third overall in Class 2A at state duals.

Belmond-Klemme now has a sharing agreement with Clarion-Goldfield/ Dows.

A dozen letterwinners will be key to the Cowboys remaining near the top of the North Central Conference and state, including state placewinners Linden Phetxoumphone, Adrian Phetxoumphone and Charlie Campbell.

“We look to build on the foundation we laid last year as a team and take leaps forward.”

Xander Herner, Mike Manzer and Emmett Herner are the other letterwinners, as the Raiders have four key freshmen and a handful of other prospects looking to contribute.

“Last year, we had 11 on the roster and only six that competed for the whole season,” Bochmann said. “We didn’t have any seniors on the squad so we return everyone. We have a large crop of freshmen and new wrestlers that are eager to have success.

“We also return some studs that are hungry to make some noise and achieve their goal of wrestling in Des Moines.”

RAIDER GIRLS WRESTLING

Cindy Wilcke has 10 key wrestlers, led by state qualifier Olivya Mack, as she begins her first season leading the East Sac County girls wrestling program.

Mack is one of three seniors among those 10, as classmates Sophia Villegas and Finia Vogel join her.

Juniors Lauren Kraus, Journey Warnke and Lillie Unrein are joined by underclassmen Aaleigha Tibbs-Kennebeck, Cheyenne Haack, Taelyn Johnson and Ella Wieck.

Hartwig, Paxton Redenius, Angel Cortes and Colin Sesker are also returning state qualifiers.

“Expectations for the season are very high,” Yoder said. “Our team returns 13 of 14 starters and our goals are very high but attainable. We have experience and depth, which will make our lineup a strength.”

Freshman Reed Campbell was an AAU state champion and will be a key newcomer along with Dawson Beyer and Easton Beyer, who have state experience from competing with Sibley-Ocheyedan.

LYNX BOYS

The word Brett Ratcliff would use to describe the preseason for his Webster City boys is unknown.

Going into the season, Ratcliff has three key pieces back in Jaxon Griffith, Zach Lahr and Coyce Bertran. The rest is up in the air for the former Lynx standout.

“Between injuries and transfers, we have a relatively new team this year,” Ratcliff said, “with only a couple players at the varsity level from a season ago.”

Griffith, who had a big fall on the football field, played in 20 games and made one start last year. He posted 86 points, 48 rebounds, 30 steals and 26 assists.

Lahr saw action in seven games as a sophomore, as did Bertran.

“I expect them to be tremendous leaders this year,” Ratcliff said. “They are high IQ guys and have an understanding of what I expect of them on the court.”

Webster City went 7-15 for a second consecutive season last year, finishing fourth in the North Central Conference.

LYNX GIRLS

Several key players are back in the fold for the Webster City girls as they begin year No. 2 under Marty McKinney.

After finishing 4-18 overall last year, the Lynx are looking to climb the ladder in the North Central Conference.

Alivia Burns, Avery Poppen, Lovie Prusimann, Tristyn Wright and Evie Davis all return with starting experience, as Jaylyn Bahrenfuss, Ashlee Nydegger, Jayme Perez and Izzy Weinschenk saw the court and are also back.

“This team is still finding their roles, but play well together,” McKinney said. “We worked hard over the summer to develop the chemistry needed to be successful on the court.

“They are very selfless and want team success before individual success.”

Davis is the top scorer back after posting 114 points as a freshman last year with 133 rebounds, 22 blocks, 21 steals and 15 assists.

Wright scored 92 points and had 77 rebounds, 39 steals, 32 assists and 14 made triples, as Poppen contributed 59 points, 59 rebounds, 14 assists, 13 steals and 12 blocks.

“Our biggest strengths are defense and rebounding,” McKinney said. “We should be versatile enough to switch from man-to-zone effectively at the defensive end. We also have a strong core of girls that attack the boards.

“We want to continue to find an identity at the offensive end. Taking care of the ball and turning it over less will be a huge key. Being able to play insideout will be a factor in our success on offense.”

LYNX WRESTLING

Drake Doolittle returns a state qualifier and several other key seniors this winter on the mat for his Webster City boys wrestling team.

Cody Elliott reached Des Moines and the state tournament a year ago, posting 26 wins overall at 215 pounds. He is joined by fellow seniors Eli Estlund, Gavin Wynkoop and Dawson Bertran.

“As we head into the 2025-26 season, our program is in a familiar position,” said Doolittle, a former standout wrestler for the Lynx. “Just like in previous years, we graduated a large senior class, which naturally leads some people to question what we can achieve this year.

“But I think it’s an exciting challenge. Being in a spot where we have to prove ourselves again gives our guys a little chip on their shoulder.”

Estlund captured 24 victories, Wynkoop had 19 and Bertran 18 a year ago. They will look to help replace the loss of seniors Blake Berninghaus, Tristan Mason, Luke Estlund, Carson Bertran and Jake Rohmiller.

“These guys have been in the varsity lineup multiple years now so we expect them to step up and lead this team,” Doolittle said. “Our upper weights will be a major strength of the lineup this season. Webster City has built a strong reputation in the upper weight classes over the years, and I expect that tradition to continue.

“As I always tell our guys, one of our biggest goals is to be the team nobody wants to wrestle — the team that pushes the pace, scores lots of

points, and never quits. If we can bring that mindset every time we step on the mat, everything else will take care of itself.”

LYNX GIRLS WRESTLING

Former Webster City wrestler

Carson Hartnett takes over as head coach of the Lynx this winter.

The program previously had sharing agreements with both Fort Dodge and Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.

“The current state of the Webster City girls wrestling program is still very new and fresh,” Hartnett said. “It has been growing over the past couple of years, but there has never been consistency with the team. The foundation has been laid and they have got a taste of what wrestling is about.”

Kali Hartnett returns with a year experience under her belt, as Kearsyn Kite, Lexi Matthes, Madison Sulver, Ariana Wilson, Ana Calles, Elena Raymundo Bernal, Kate Feltz, Kendra Shultz, Abby Heckert, Nevaeh Robinson, Isabelle McNiel and Joyful Ssuubi have already hit the mats for action this season.

“All of these girls want to be at practice, they want to learn, they want a coach to push them to their limits and they do not complain,” Hartnett said. “The chemistry of this team has been great. I have been pushing the team aspect because wrestling can be looked at as an individual sport, but once we become a team and hold each other accountable, then we will start to see success.”

PATON-CHURDAN

ROCKET BOYS

The Paton-Churdan boys were a young roster a year ago, and the Rockets will remain that way this season.

Six players who started at least seven games are all slated to return for PatonChurdan, led by returning scorers Trevon Keely and Cayden Stream.

Keely, a track standout, scored 395 points with 155 rebounds, 78 assists, 52 steals and 15 blocked shots, making 29 triples.

Hartman added 202 points, 82 rebounds, 22 assists and 14 blocks, knocking down 28 threepointers.

Bryce Stephenson had over 100 points, starting all

21 games like Keely and Hartman.

ROCKET GIRLS

The Paton-Churdan girls will look for more success behind several key returning players.

That includes starters Ava Minnehan, Holly Miller, Kaliyah Minnihan, Alivya Smith and Ella Tasler.

Minnihan was the leading scorer a year ago with 176 points, adding 139 rebounds, 18 steals and 13 assists. Tasler chipped in 64 points with 94 rebounds, as Minnehan finished with 74 rebounds.

MUSTANG BOYS

Two starters and seven other letterwinners return for the NewellFonda boys, who put together a perfect run through the Twin Lakes Conference last winter.

From there, the Mustangs reached a district final, going 15-9 overall on the year.

Senior Jacksyn Hogrefe and junior Jackson Bellcock return to the starting lineup for second-year head coach Jordan Myers.

Hogrefe posted 19.4 points with almost five rebounds and three assists per game last season. Bellcock added seven points and over two rebounds.

“We will be relying a lot on some guys that haven’t had a ton of varsity experience,” Myers said. “But we also return a strong core that I think will help those guys transition to playing at the varsity level.

“Every day is an opportunity to improve, and that’s our mindset as we work towards playing our best basketball come February.”

Junior Liam Gauley and sophomores Gunnar Baron, Ian Harrer, Kinnick Kaufman, Thomas Mercer, Will Voyles and Jack Olsen are all back. Freshmen Andrew Greenfield, Cody Wolf and Draytn Heun provide more depth.

“We are really looking to improve our transition offense this year and that will be a focus for us early and often,” Myers said. “We have had a really solid offseason with a lot of guys putting in work to improve.”

MUSTANG GIRLS

The three-time defending Class 1A state runner-up Newell-Fonda girls are set to make another run to Des Moines this winter.

Led by returning starters Jocee Walsh and Mareni Brabec, the Mustangs feature several key pieces for legendary head coach Dick Jungers.

Walsh, a senior, averaged just over eight points per game last year while Brabec, also a senior, is coming off a state cross country season.

Ellie Sievers, a freshman last year, returns having scored almost 14 points off the bench for Newell-Fonda. She is

“We are very athletic and hope to use our speed and quickness to our advantage,” Jungers said. “We have good team depth and kids that love basketball. They spend a lot of time working on their craft.” Jungers, has posted a record of 51382 since taking over the Mustangs, including a 22-5 run last year to the state finals. He has coached them to 16 of the school’s 20 state appearances all-time, winning four state titles while finishing second seven other times.

WEST BEND-MALLARD

WOLVERINE BOYS

The depth expected for West Bend-Mallard boys coach Jerald Zaugg this winter took a bit of a hit in the offseason.

The Wolverines lost senior Leydan Grimm and junior Trent Morey due to injuries. They still have three starters and two more letterwinners back, though.

Senior Carson Schneider is joined by junior Abner Zaugg and sophomore Kacen Flynn in the starting lineup, while juniors Grady Goddard and Tyler Hansen look to provide more this season.

“We have the majority of our scoring and rebounding returning,” Zaugg said. “We need to improve each practice to be competitive in every game.”

Zaugg nearly averaged a double-double a year ago, as the 6-foot-5 standout scored 12.3 points and grabbed 9.5 rebounds a game. Flynn, 6-4, added nine points and seven rebounds, as Schneider chipped in five points.

Several juniors and

sophomores will provide depth for the Wolverines.

“One of the areas we need to improve the most upon is by reducing our turnovers,” Zaugg said.

“We have very good interior players in Abner and Kacen, and return our best three-point shooter in Carson.”

WOLVERINE GIRLS

Thomas Fehr will look to five returning letterwinners to form a strong nucleus after leading the West Bend-Mallard girls to 17 wins a season ago.

That win total marked the most for the Wolverines in the Bound-era, which dates back to the 200708 season. They have won double-digit games nine times, including 30 the last two years combined.

Senior Addison Montag is the lone returning starter, as she posted six points and nearly 10 rebounds per game. Senior Chloe Dickey, junior Avery Weydert and sophomores

Fehr will look to junior Ellie Gerber and freshmen Rylee Jergens, Morgan Miller and Ashlynn Prescott for added depth.

WOLVERINE WRESTLING

The West Bend-Mallard wrestling team will lean on one returning letterwinner heading into the season.

Senior Mason Knapp won two matches at the state tournament a year ago, going 38-7. He qualified in the 106-pound Class 1A bracket.

Knapp lost his first match at state, but came back with a forfeit victory on the consolation side. He than knocked off Justice Norman of East Union with a fall in 1:38.

The Wolverine then fell to Twin Lakes Conference opponent Karson Wuebker by fall in the blood round to cap his Des Moines trip.

GREENE COUNTY

RAM BOYS

Chris Nelson hopes that an experienced group can lead to a turnaround for the Greene County boys this winter.

Returning starters Nathan Towers, Broc Stream and Rafe Michaelsen are back, as five letterwinners join them.

Stream posted over seven points per game last year; Michaelsen averaged four points and five rebounds; and Towers chipped in three points, nearly four boards and almost three assists.

“We have a good nucleus back,” Nelson said. “We will be athletic and improved on the offensive end. We feel we should do well on defense, but the key in games for us will be consistent shooting and limiting turnovers.

“We feel we can compete with any team in the league and hope to be in the middle of the conference race with a goal of finishing Top-3.”

Leah McCormick, Natalie Wright, Olivia Smith and Faith Jaimes-Diaz all saw minutes last year for the Rams.

RAM WRESTLING

The Greene County wrestling team crowned a state champion last year in Brent Dennhardt, as the Rams pushed five others through to state.

While Dennhardt has graduated, Brennan Jacobs, Jaron Jacobs and Degan Miller are all set to return.

Miller placed fifth a year ago, finishing his sophomore season 31-8 overall. Brennan Jacobs won 33 matches and Jaron Jacobs picked up 35 wins.
