Land Acknowledgement “THE LAND ON WHICH WE GATHER IS THE UNCEDED TERRITORY OF THE AWASWAS-SPEAKING UYPI TRIBE. THE AMAH MUTSUN TRIBAL BAND, COMPRISED OF THE DESCENDANTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE TAKEN TO MISSIONS SANTA CRUZ AND SAN JUAN BAUTISTA DURING SPANISH COLONIZATION OF THE CENTRAL COAST, IS TODAY WORKING HARD TO RESTORE TRADITIONAL STEWARDSHIP PRACTICES ON THESE LANDS AND HEAL FROM HISTORICAL TRAUMA.”

“LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS DEDICATE SPACE TO RECOGNIZE THE HISTORY AND PRESENCE OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND THEIR ENDURING RELATIONSHIP TO THEIR TRADITIONAL HOMELANDS, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHERE UCSC CURRENTLY RESIDES. LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS HELP CREATE AWARENESS OF THE CULTURAL ERASURE OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND THE PROCESSES OF COLONIZATION AND SUBJUGATION THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THAT ERASURE.THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT USED AT UC SANTA CRUZ WAS DEVELOPED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE AMAH MUTSUN TRIBAL BAND CHAIRMAN AND THE AMAH MUTSUN RELEARNING PROGRAM AT THE UCSC ARBORETUM."

Black Lives Matter uprising Acknowledgement “THE COMMENCEMENT SPEECHES WERE RECORDED BEFORE THE UPRISING WE ARE SEEING ACROSS THE NATION, AN UPRISING THAT DEMANDS AN END TO POLICE BRUTALITY AND RACIST VIOLENCE, TRUE JUSTICE FOR THE VICTIMS OF ANTIBLACK VIOLENCE, AND THE DISMANTLING OF WHITE SUPREMACY. WE STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH THIS UPRISING AND WITH THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT, AND WE EMBRACE THE GOALS OF THIS MOVEMENT AS FUNDAMENTAL TO MERRILL'S ETHOS OF CULTURAL IDENTITY AND GLOBAL CONSCIOUSNESS. THERE IS A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE – FROM SMALL ACTS TO GREAT ONES – TO BRING ABOUT A MORE EQUITABLE AND MORE JUST WORLD FOR ALL.

Merrill Student Government Statement ON BEHALF OF MERRILL STUDENT GOVERNMENT (MSG), THE MSG EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS FELT IT APPROPRIATE TO ADDRESS THE STATE OF OUR NATION AND THE INJUSTICE THAT PLAGUES IT. MSG, IN CONGRUENCE WITH THE MERRILL COLLEGE ETHOS “EXPLORING CULTURAL IDENTITIES & RAISING GLOBAL CONSCIOUSNESS” STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH ALL OF THE BLACK LIVES LOST TO POLICE BRUTALITY, UNJUST INCARCERATION, AND HATE. BLACK LIVES MATTER. IN SUPPORT OF THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT, MSG ACKNOWLEDGES THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS JUSTICE IS TO RENOUNCE WHITE SUPREMACY, AND MSG ENTHUSIASTICALLY DOES SO. MSG ADDITIONALLY ENDORSES THE BLACK STUDENT UNION’S DEMANDS WITH THE HOPE THAT CHANCELLOR CYNTHIA LARIVE DEMONSTRATES LOYALTY TO HER STUDENTS BY MEETING SAID DEMANDS.
