.26-27 We
pleased to share
version of the 2021-22 Merion Mercy Academy Annual Report with you. The Annual Report celebrates the connection between your
and the ability of Merion Mercy Academy to provide life-changing
to this generation of MMA students. On behalf of the MMA Development Office, thank you for your generosity during the July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022 school year, and very best wishes from us as we begin this new academic year!
As Head of School, I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve and lead Merion Mercy Academy. We extend our sincere appreciation to Laura Farrell, our first lay Head of School, for sharing with us her commitment to all girls’ education as well as her strong Catholic faith.
While I am new to this position, I have a long and cherished history with Merion Mercy starting with my daughter, Kelly, who graduated in the class of ’04. I served as a member of the Board of Trustees (2005-2016), as Chair of the Board of Trustees from 2009-2014, and most recently as Director of Operations from 2020 until June 2022. Through the years, I have been continually inspired by the simple and profound power of our mission:
Merion Mercy, an independent Catholic, college preparatory school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, empowers young women to lead, learn, and serve through an education grounded in spiritual development and academic and personal excellence.
Inspired by the life, work, and spiritual vision of Catherine McAuley, our mission is everything. Through the past 138 years, Merion Mercy has remained true to our Mercy Core Values, our Catholic identity rooted in the Gospels, the legacy of Catherine McAuley, and the Sisters of Mercy. Our Mercy legacy serves as both our roots and our wings, that which grounds us and that which compels us to grow in love, leadership, and learning. The ever-renewing wellspring of Mercy has no beginning, no end, and no limits. The more it is given and received, the more it grows. We believe that Mercy has infinite power to transform people and our world for good.
This exceedingly powerful and ever renewing dynamic is fueled by each and every member of our Merion community who supports us through gifts to the MMAnnual fund, scholarship contributions, tax credit donations, and Sip’n Bid donations, no matter how large or how small. It is you, our donors, who keep the fires of Mercy burning, inspiring our students to make themselves and their world better. For this, I offer our humble and deep gratitude.
In Mercy, Marianne Grace Head of School

Dear Merion Mercy Community,
Allow me to begin this letter by expressing my delight in the appointment of Marianne Grace as Merion Mercy Academy’s new Head of School! Marianne demonstrates remarkable energy and enthusiasm and has brought to the position her decades of leadership experience and obvious passion for the school and her Catholic faith. She is a mission-driven, strategic, and collaborative leader. Her wholehearted dedication to Merion Mercy and the lives of students and faculty is abundantly clear, and, by all accounts, the year is off to a great start!
As I reflect on the 2021-2022 academic year, there is much to celebrate, including a post-pandemic return to beloved traditions, the creation of a comprehensive strategic plan, a new Design and Discovery Studio and the graduation of 106 impressive alumnae. In addition to being admitted to dozens of fine institutions, the Class of 2022 secured more than $24M in scholarships and numerous students were recognized for their academic performance. Brag worthy results, indeed!
As you will see detailed in this report, the support we receive from our community is far-reaching—and comes in the forms of time, talent, and treasure. Thank you to all of our community members who help Merion Mercy empower the next generation of young women of Mercy who will impact our world in their own, unique way.
I also look back with gratitude for Laura Farrell’s leadership the past three years. Through her commitment to MMA’s mission and Mercy values, her strong Catholic faith, a compelling vision for all girls education, and a commitment to our students, Laura was able to make significant progress despite the challenges imposed by COVID-19. I am particularly pleased with our 2022–2027 strategic plan, “Boundless Mercy, Infinite Possibilities,” which provides a vision for the future and is already generating ideas to enhance the student experience.
I also would like to recognize my fellow Board members for their commitment to the school. These past years, in particular, have seen a heavy workload on many of our committees involving the planning and execution of the first stages of implementing the strategic plan. The years ahead are exciting ones for MMA!
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank our donors, faculty, staff, parents, alumnae and the Sisters of Mercy for your commitment to this amazing school. You provide pivotal support to our wonderful students who bring life to our mission and energy to our entire community. I look forward to celebrating with you all that lies ahead!
In gratitude

Parents Association Officers hosted a Wine and Cheese Reception on August 29, 2021, welcoming new parents of the classes of 2024 and 2025, and for the parents of transfer students.
Last Fall, the Parents Association, held our annual Trivia Night, truly a Fun Raiser, chaired by Diane and Casey Fosbenner, P’24. The evening was hosted by Casey, current parent and executive producer of Beasley Media WMMR. Approximately 100 parents, past parents, faculty and staff were on hand, competing to win bragging rights.
Designer Handbag Bingo, or Posh People Pursuing Purses, was held on February 25 and attended by a “crossover” of Designer Divas including 200 parents, alums, staff and friends. The event, chaired by Maria Shapson, P’24, was another great Fun Raising success, raising $15,000, as well as lots of eyebrows.
The Merion Mercy Fashion Show, Luncheon, and Shopping Event is a time-honored annual occasion hosted by the Parents Association. This past Spring we celebrated with a lighthearted Country and Western theme and fun fashion from Mad Hatter. Some 300 students, mothers, mother figures, grandmothers, and friends of Merion Mercy kicked up their high heels and cowgirl boots at the Springfield Country Club. Our thanks to Jackie O’Connor, P’22 and Susan Cobaugh Steinmetz ’93, P’19, ‘22 for spearheading this successful and memorable event and to our emcee Caroline Mangan O’Halloran ’77, of SAVVY/Main Line.

MMA PARENTS ASSOCIATION
The Parents Association wrapped up the year with a special day celebrating and thanking our faculty and staff. A day full of spring flowers and festive food was served to our beloved faculty, sharing lots of love and appreciation. Our thanks to Amy Foran, P’23, ’26 who chaired this lovely day.

The Parents Association, in partnership with Mercy Mission Corps, ran this initiative to bring our community together in service to community needs, moving meals from Merion families’ kitchens to the Dining Room of Face to Face in Germantown. This is only one of the ongoing programs chaired by Jennifer Assetto P’25, Parent Service Programs Chair, to unite our community in response to the needs of our neighbors. The Parents Association also runs a monthly “Mothers’ Cupboard” collection, spearheaded by Tara Keohane Scherf ’94, P’22, ’25, that helps the food insecure in Kensington by supplying groceries to the Food Pantry at the Community Center at Visitation.
Amy Foran, P’23, ’26, Nicole Peretta Elguize ’91 P’22, ’24, and Lisa Shapson, P’24 present faculty and staff with flowers.
Grateful faculty members included Katie Cho, Brianna Vassallo ’16, Ali DiPaul Kelly ’99, Paul Clementi, and Carol Restifo.

Merion Mercy hosted our 45th annual Sip ’n Bid, Let it Snow, a gala auction and dinner party on November 20, 2021.
We are so grateful to all those who generously supported our biggest annual fundraiser, Let it Snow Sip ’n Bid, attended by our current parents and caregivers, alumnae, parents of alumnae, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends. With the help of over 100 volunteers, our audience totalled more than 1,000 participants and donors from across the county and around the world. In-person guests were treated to signature cocktails from award-winning Revivalist Spirits, donated by Scott and Margaret Avellino, P’22.
This time-honored event has become one of the most anticipated social fundraisers of the year. The best part of this event? We come together as a community and raise crucial funding to support every aspect of a Merion education. The monies you raise and contribute go directly to providing more than 400 girls—and our future girls—an experience steeped in Mercy values that will continue to provide its promise of living Mercy and seeking justice for years to come.

SPECIAL EVENTS
Mercy In Action Speaker Series
As our first event launching the strategic plan, Boundless Mercy, Infinite Possibilities, Merion hosted our inaugural speaker for Mercy in Action Speaker Series, featured Christina Mallon ’06.
Christina’s extraordinary work has been recognized throughout the world, and she has been lauded for her groundbreaking work in design.
As she began her role last month as Microsoft’s Director of Inclusive Design, she shared, “As a neurodiverse woman with dual arm paralysis, I currently live in a world that was not designed for myself nor the other 20% of the world who has a permanent disability which creates constant barriers. It’s my life’s mission to help build the future digital world that considers the needs of underfunded groups at the beginning of its creation.”
Christina is an incredible example of the powerful influence of a Mercy girl!
Shining Lights of Mercy Event
Merion Mercy hosted some of our Shining Lights of Mercy on Sunday evening April 12, 2022, where we reflected on our Mercy Charism through the lens of a 20-year-out alumna, Kristen Keating Weeks ’02, president of student body, Moira Vaughn ’22, and Vice Chair of our Board of Trustees, Ellen Byrnes Willcox ’80, P’12. The three speakers wove together the timeless value of Mercy. Kristen shared how her Mercy education helped her frame a life and career inspired by that which is “intrinsically good,” a core teaching of her time at Merion and her clear understanding of the Merion Mercy sisterhood. Moira addressed the current blessings of her years at Merion and how a MMA education has equipped her and her classmates to rise to any challenge. Ellen cited the “Roots and Wings of Mercy” as the ever-renewing catalyst that inspires Merion graduates to make themselves and their world better. Ellen further outlined how our Strategic Plan, “Boundless Mercy, Infinite Possibilities,” provides a roadmap for the wellspring of Mercy to fuel our school in the years to come.
Our Shining Lights of Mercy event proved to be a meaningful evening as we shared our mission as a Catholic independent school, reaffirmed our Mercy legacy, and looked to build an even better tomorrow.

GIVING DAY RESULTS
Our Spring Giving Day was a huge success! We are very grateful for all of you who participated in the 5.11.22 campaign to Bring It Home for 511 Montgomery Avenue. There is no place like MMA!
#OurDayforMMA was more than just a day of giving. It was a day to celebrate our roots with members of our MMA family coming together to build a stronger future for our second home—"the spot we love so well."
On 5.11, bring it home for 511 Montgomery Ave.
All donations made to #OurDayforMMA support the MMAnnual Fund, which provides necessary funding to strengthen MMA's programs and activities as well as new opportunities for our students, alumnae, faculty, and staff. Every gift worked to strengthen and build the Mercy education for students today and for future generations. Merion students will undoubtedly make a direct and meaningful impact on our world.

Trocaire is the Gaelic word for Mercy. Catherine McAuley defined Mercy as a “vivacious generosity of spirit…a gift given in response to a need.”
Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, continually addressed the needs of those in her community. Whether their needs were educational, physical, or spiritual, Catherine was a witness to the merciful presence of God in our world. Inspired by Catherine’s commitment to cultivate Mercy in the lives of others, Merion Mercy designates our highest annual giving level to respond to the needs of our 21st-century teaching and learning community at Merion Mercy.
The Trocaire Society sustains these works through exceptionally generous donations that support the greatest needs of MMA. As Merion Mercy Academy’s leading donor group, the following donors are honored for their extraordinary commitment to Merion Mercy by giving gifts of $20,000 or more.

DONORS
Merion Mercy is exceedingly grateful to the following individuals and businesses that made tax credit donations through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credits (OSTC) programs. We also extend our thanks for our partnership with Business Leaders Organized for Catholic Schools (BLOCS) for streamlining this process for our donors.
This past fiscal year, 25 Pennsylvania businesses made generous gifts to MMA through these tax credit programs, amounting to $348,223 to support scholarships and financial aid. These business donors were able to receive substantial tax credits while redirecting those tax dollars to provide needed funding for deserving Merion Mercy students. These tax credit gifts make a profound impact for students who would otherwise be unable to attend Merion Mercy Academy.
Your tax-credit scholarship donations have allowed me to attend this wonderful school. I am proud to have achieved Distinguished Honors. I am now fully immersed in science. Honors Chemistry is very challenging, but I am so proud that I understand this complicated subject.
My Merion journey also enabled me to contribute to meaningful club activities. As a Blue Key Ambassador, I am growing socially as I introduce incoming students to Merion Mercy. Working on Stage Crew, I have learned about the value of teamwork and hard work. The ASIA Club has given me the opportunity to reflect on my culture and value who I am.
I am very grateful to be here at Merion. Thank you so much for your tax-credit donations making my experience of the MMA sisterhood possible.”
I am truly grateful for the tax-credit scholarship funding that has enabled me to attend Merion Mercy. I love my school through and through. The student experience here at Merion is amazing, and the academic program is outstanding. This very supportive environment pushes me and my peers to work smarter and harder. With that, we continually support one another. I know my teachers genuinely care about me academically, spiritually, mentally, and physically. Here, I am thriving. Recently my precalculus teacher sent me an email saying that she is proud of me and all my hard work. What a boost that was! With all this support, I have grown as a person and found my voice. Merion has encouraged me to be more outspoken and outgoing as an African American young woman.
EITC and OSTC donations have provided me with a wonderful high school experience that I will value for my entire life. At Merion Mercy, the visual arts program is just wonderful. This program is giving me the tools to turn this passion toward a career path. I am blessed with the great advantage of our wonderful art teachers and our beautiful Art and Design Gallery.
This is a full experience. As a member of the Art Honor Society, we combine artwork and service. Since freshman year, I have played the clarinet in the Orchestra and performed in the Handbells Choir. I cannot thank you enough for making it possible for me to come to Merion Mercy Academy, where I am growing academically, emotionally, and spiritually.
I received tax-credit funding throughout my four years at Merion. Without that, I would not have been able to attend this school. I grew tremendously during my time at Merion. During that time, I grew from a nervous freshman to a confident young woman who is ready for college. At Merion Mercy I developed a devotion to service in the Blue Key Society and Mercy Mission Corps. My leadership skills flourished. I will continue this passion for service throughout my college career.
I achieved Distinguished Honors as a Merion student. Now I am a first-generation college student at VIllanova University. Merion Mercy led me to make myself and the world better. Thank you to the tax-credit donors for supporting me.
