The season of giving
“Enter to learn go forth to serve” Simone Burde ’17 News Editor This year on Veterans Day, November 11, students had the opportunity to hear LM alumnus Vice Admiral Herman Shelanski speak about his experiences in the Navy. Shelanski grew up in Wynnewood and graduated in the class of 1974. After receiving a degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado, he began his career in the US Navy. This past May, Shelanski was promoted from the rank of Rear Admiral to Vice Admiral. In his new position he is obligated “to inspect, investigate, and inquire into matters of importance to the Department of the Navy and maintain the highest level of public confidence.” These duties are assigned by the Secretary of the Navy. Social Studies interim department chair Chad Henneberry organized Shelanski’s presentation, which was open to all students during Lunch and Learn. Henneberry commented, “The Social Studies department was pleased to learn that Vice-Admiral Herman Shelanski would be able to visit our school to help us honor Veteran’s Day. His life experiences and accomplishments are extremely impressive, ranging from his beginnings as a young naval aviator, to commanding the

According to Pennsylvania’s Annual School Performance Profile (SPP), LM’s score dropped from a 96 to an 83 this past year, a plummet that outraged many in the community. This ranking system uses each school’s Keystone Exam scores as its data to judge a school’s achievements. The scores are largely based on three tests specifically: the Algebra 1, Literature, and Biology exams. LMHS scored 96 last year, whereas this year they scored 82.5. ing by the state index could potentially lower home values in our area. Community member and school district parent Colleen Law, said, “I want the very best for my kids; that’s why I’m here. If these ratings are accurate, then I am concerned that this may not be a good

Many members of the community expressed concern when they saw this major drop. Parents were uneasy about the deteriorating quality of our school’s previously consistently high-regarded education. Also, some community members worried that the lower rank-

Ryan Fisher ’18 It’s December! Students and teachers alike are waiting for winter break to arrive. For some, this season comes with the anticipation of receiving gifts, accompanied by a large meal with family to commemorate time’s passing. Others, however, lack such luxuries. Enter Winterfest, an event created to repair this imbalance. Organized by health and P.E. teacher Tom Kline and math teacher Brian Feeney, Winterfest begins with a canned food drive, where students are encouraged to donate nonperishable goods to the Adamutch Food Pantry. What is Winterfest? The event is still young, as this year’s drive marks only the second one since its rebirth. The current idea is similar to the older model, in which the entirety of Winterfest consisted of a celebration commemorating the beginning of Winter Break. Last year, Kline and Feeney revitalized it, and although they kept the name, the
trend or investment for my family.” On the other hand, Principal Sean Hughes explained that the SPP is not a school ranking, but a comparison of a school to its previous performances. This profile is also pretty new, so there are only two years of data for comparison. Our school performed exceptionally high in the 2013 school year, which makes it hard for us to show growth, since our baseline scores of proficiency were already high. Schools gain points based on their percent growth, so many other high-achieving schools also saw their scores dramatically decrease. Hughes stated, “Bottom line, the rating reflects changes to a state formula rather than changes to achievement levels of our students.” Hughes also feels that there are many ways to assess student growth and the quality of a school. He added, “We strongly
Convention of Black engineers Nisha Arya ’18 On November 6 to 8, six LM students attended the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Professional Development Conference at the Marriott Hotel in Bethesda, MD. NSBE is a nonprofit organization whose main purpose is to increase the number of black engineers who “excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community through guidance and mentorship.” With over 31,000 members around the world, NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations in the United States. The convention gave its participants the opportunity to communicate with their peers and technical professionals and to enhance their personal and technical skills. Students had the opportunity to speak with representatives from graduate schools and top technical corporations such as Facebook and Google. Corporations involved with the convention also have the ability to recruit the most qualified, impressive candidates.
