Migration in France After the Second World War and during the economic upturn of the 1950s and 1960s, France once again recruited (predominantly male) workers from Italy, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Poland and Russia. French law facilitated the immigration of thousands of colons, ethnic or national French from former colonies of North and West Africa, India and Indochina to mainland France. 1.6 million European pieds noirs migrated from Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. French law made it easy for them to live in mainland France.
