Star Star Star Manager's Message Star Star Star Falcon Freedom Days Canceled/Fireworks Might Still Happen As with many special summer events around the country, we had to cancel the traditional Falcon Freedom Days celebration for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Large gatherings are still prohibited by public health orders (at the time of this writing) so event planning including advanced commitments to contractors and vendors had to be cancelled. However, we are working on the possibility of a fireworks show that could be watched from a distance while maintaining required social distancing. Watch our website for current announcements about whether a fireworks show will happen and you can donate to the event. Well Site 6 Progress Report As Meridian Ranch continues to grow, the developer and your Meridian Service Metro District regularly expand and improve the public infrastructure that provides essential services. The most important infrastructure is our water supply system. This year, we brought back into service Well Site No. 9 which was off line for about 2 years during construction of the Winding Walk underground utilities and surface improvements that conflicted with the temporary overhead electric line formerly serving Well Site 9. In addition, we just completed the interior painting of two water storage tanks. Last Fall, our drilling contractor was working on drilling the two new water supply wells at Water Well Site 6 across from the high school. The drilling was completed successfully and now the mechanical and electrical equipping of the new wells is under way and should be completed by about the end of July. Water Conservation Needed This Summer On average, we are able to produce the quantities of water that people use in Meridian Ranch. However, it is always a challenge to meet peak demand periods during the summer irrigation months, especially during the early morning hours. We would like to remind you of a number of strategies you can use to help us during these peak demand periods and thus avoid or limit any mandatory conservation measures.
•
Make sure your irrigation system is running properly, repair any broken or leaking components
•
Make sure sprinkler heads are adjusted properly, so they do not spray onto the driveway or street
•
Check nozzles on sprays for clogging and check rotors so that they are rotating properly
•
Never water if the soil is still wet
•
Spray zones need to water for no longer than 15 mins/ Rotor zones need water for no longer than 30 mins
•
Established turf requires watering no more than every other day to every third day (only new turf needs water 3 times per day for the first 2-3 weeks of establishment, not all summer long).
•
Try watering dry spots instead of watering the whole yard.
•
Mow your grass at longer lengths, longer grass retains moisture better and for longer periods.
•
Fertilize your lawn 2-3 times per year, it is best to do this before a rain storm so you don’t need to use your irrigation to water the fertilizer in.
The best way to water your lawn is to use the Cycle and Soak method. The Cycle and Soak method means dividing the watering time for an area of your yard into smaller increments (cycles), which allows the water to infiltrate (soak) into the soil. If an area is watered for too long, many soils cannot absorb water as quickly as it comes out of the sprinklers. Water that cannot be absorbed by the soil is wasted because it runs off the surface. Allowing the water to soak into the soil between cycles makes sure the water is being put to good use. Divide the zone’s watering time into two or three cycles. Water the first cycle, then wait about an hour before you water again. For more information on how long a zone should run, check out the scheduled recommended at www.csu.org/CSUDocuments/cyclesoak.pdf . Cycle and Soak watering not only saves water, but also improves your lawn’s health. Moisture deep in the soil promotes deeper roots, which contributes to a thicker, healthier, greener lawn. Don’t water for short periods in both the morning and the evening. The water never soaks deeply into the soil, leading to shallow roots and unhealthy grass.
•
It is best to water between the hours of 10 pm to 6 am, instead of during the heat of the day
•
Consider watering at night instead of the morning – our biggest peak usage is during the morning. Watering at night reduces our maximum peak demands which helps deliver all the water that our customers want.
Sources: Colorado State University Extension, Colorado Springs Utilities Cycle and Soak pamphlet.
•
A “Cycle and Soak” method of watering is best for ground saturation and root growth – see more information below about “Cycle and Soak”.
