Worked for the YMCA of Greater Kansas City - Atchison for the past 5 years as the Healthy Living and Youth Sports Director. Kelsey has this to say about the Y, “I love that on a daily basis I have the opportunity to impact so many lives and at the same time have my life impacted just as much”.

News You Can Use from the Falcon Fire Protection District Are You Signed Up for Emergency Notifications?

The recent wildfires in our state are a good reminder about the importance of being able to receive emergency notifications. Disasters and emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time, so you and your family need to be able to receive alerts related to evacuations, shelterin-place instructions, or other emergency situations that require you to take action to remain safe.

Locally, these kinds of emergency notifications are issued through the El Paso-Teller County 911 Authority’s Emergency Notification System (ENS).

You must sign up to receive ENS alerts, even if you already receive other kinds of messages such as Amber Alerts or weather notifications on your cell phone or other devices.

The ENS allows users to list up to five locations and up to eight points of contact. Users may also choose how they receive notifications to include by phone call, email, and text message.

Stay tuned to news broadcasts, radio stations, social media websites, weather radios, etc. Do not put your safety at risk waiting for a phone call or notification to be told what to do. If at any time you feel that you are in danger, you should take whatever action you feel is necessary to get yourself to safety.

Call 911 for Emergencies, Not the Fire Station Always call 911 for a medical emergency, fire, or other emergency situation.

Don’t call the fire station directly because crews may not be available to answer your call, and that will cause a delay in getting you the help you Page 6

need. By calling 911, a trained call-taker can start the emergency dispatch process even while he or she is taking your information. The 911 line also records the number you are calling from in case your call is disconnected.

For non-emergency issues requiring a response from law enforcement, fire department, or emergency medical services, call the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center non-emergent number: 719-390-5555.

For routine fire department business, you may call Falcon Fire Protection District’s administrative phone number, 719-495-4050, during normal business hours. Please do NOT use this number to report emergencies!

Manager’s Message for August 2018

Colorado High School Activities Association has joined with Arbiter Athlete and all the schools across the state to now host their Pre-Participation Athletic Forms online with ArbiterAthlete. This digital platform will allow you and your student(s) to complete and access athletic forms via computer, tablet, or mobile phone. You are able to fill out all athletic forms necessary for your student to participate in athletics at Falcon. Please refer to the Falcon High School athletics webpage for detailed instructions for registration!

Colorado’s semi-arid climate is punctuated with multi-year droughts, reminding us of the value of plentiful water supplies. Water supply planners estimate that a typical household needs 0.4 to 0.5 acre-feet of water per year (approximately 150,000 gal) to satisfy the typical demands of a home and lawn. However, we can get by on far less.

3B Construction Update:

During drought or times of restricted landscape watering, most lawns, including bluegrass, will withstand reduced watering regimes by going dormant. In these situations, adjust mowing, fertilizing, aeration, and weed control practices appropriately to the watering schedule. Most lawns can be revived with good management and care after the drought breaks.

Changing landscape plants and lawn grass species during drought is NOT a good idea, as it generally takes more water to establish new plants than to keep old plants alive.

In Meridian Ranch, some of the common areas have irrigated turf, but much of the common areas around our trails and open spaces use native grasses that are not irrigated and are not normally mowed. During periods of warm, dry weather, the native grasses will become stressed and turn brown, but will not necessarily die. They can often be revived by a few good rains.

• Make sure sprinkler heads are adjusted properly, so they do not spray onto the driveway or street

• Fertilize your lawn 2-3 times per year, it is best to do this before a rain storm so you don’t need to use your irrigation to water the fertilizer in.

The best way to water your lawn is to use the “cycle and soak” method.

The cycle and soak method means dividing the watering time for an area of your yard into smaller increments (cycles), which allows the water to infiltrate (soak) into the soil. If an area is watered for too long, many soils cannot absorb water as quickly as it comes out of the sprinklers. Water that cannot be absorbed by the soil is wasted because it runs off the surface. Allowing the water to soak into the soil between cycles makes sure the water is being put to good use. Divide the zone’s watering time into two or three cycles. Water the first cycle, then wait about an hour before you water again. For more information on how long a zone should run, check out the scheduled recommended at https://www.csu.org/ CSUDocuments/cyclesoak.pdf . The cycle and soak watering method not only saves water, but also improves your lawn’s health. Moisture deep in the soil promotes deeper roots, which contributes to a thicker, healthier, greener lawn. Don’t water for short periods in both the morning and the evening. The water never soaks deeply into the soil, leading to shallow roots and unhealthy grass.

D49: Military Students Learning to Hang in There The life of a military student is challenging. Frequent moves across the globe bring constant change and new beginnings. “Being a military kid can be hard, but things like this make it easier,” said third-grader, Becky Simpson.

Third and fourth-grade militaryconnected students in District 49 navigated a restorative ropes course as a team at La Foret in Black Forest June 13. The course promotes practice and application of social and emotional skills, while teaching students to work together.

The event happened just in time for Becky whose father serves in the U.S. Army. Becky is getting ready for her family’s third move as she prepares to enter only her fourth year of school. “The ropes course was so much fun! It helped me know how to get ready for moving to Italy,” shared Becky. “I know not to be scared about meeting new people and making new friends.”

District 49 understands the significance of the military population and value of providing support to families that serve. By providing a Military Student Transition Consultant (MSTC), military and federal service families have a helping hand in D49 to ensure smooth academic transitions, referrals to installations and community resources, and social emotional support for students.

The event organizer, Melissa Dashner, MSTC in D49, commented, “Students are able to discover and develop their own skills, potential and passion.”

Military-connected students face challenges such as Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves and deployments. “The restorative ropes course arms them with skills that can be later applied in these scenarios,” stated Dashner.
