A lETTER FROM THE EDITOR We're glad you've picked up a copy of the inaugural edition of Hearth & Vine magazine. We couldn’t be more proud to bring you this beautiful rendition of the many of the things that make this region special.

Hearth & Vine is about celebrating the rich culture and heritage of the Northern Piedmont region of North Carolina and Southside Virginia. While there are so many things that can’t be included in this edition alone, Hearth & Vine is a celebration of who we are and where we live. It’s about celebrating lives well lived.

Hearth & Vine is about bringing you more; more about the beauty, the grace and the charm, more information, more fun, more of who we are. And we’re doing it our way - with flair. In this issue we'll take a look at the best in the biz in the custom car scene, journey to the most amazing garden that you've ever seen and so much more.

With a background in the publishing industry, I’ve wanted to create a magazine like this for many years that showcases what the region has to offer. I came to love this area through my work for the last 20 years but this is the first time I’ve actually felt like I was able to express that love adequately.

I couldn’t do it alone. It took a partnership with my son, Brandon Griffin, to bring this about. His experience in graphic design coupled with the exceptional photography of Justin Robinson (both of whom are also from this area) has been inspirational and allowed us to hold a mirror up to the beauty and quality of the folks in the region. I’m looking forward to showing people that reflection for many years to come.

here’s a certain sound that tires make when they turn onto a dirt road that lends itself to certain expectations. You might expect to see something old fashioned or things built on hard work. If that’s the case, Ankum road in Gasburg, Va. gives no disappointment.

Skeletons of vintage vehicles huddle together like silent memories but this is no junk yard.

Each piece is vintage and each piece a work of art in progress. The sounds of an electric grinder scream in the background and you can see the sparks as a metal surface begins to smooth. This is Kentz Kustomz - a real, live, custom body shop.

Unexpectedly Kent Writtenberry, the owner, drives up on a golf cart. He’s dressed in coveralls. A blue bandanna stands out strongly against his ginger hair and beard, accenting his crystal blue eyes. His smile is genuine as he invites you into the shop. You’re greeted by more antiques – all Chevys. “I’m a Chevy guy,” Kent confesses.

He mentions his dad and other family members all like Ford but Chevy is his pick. “To me, Ford is bland. Chevy has got better lines.”

“ONADINE” is sitting on a lift in one corner of the shop. “That’s my personal vehicle,” he says. “My personal truck. Well it belongs to my girlfriend, Kim.” He motions you to go through, saying that it’s a 51 Chevy. She’s

burgundy in color and getting modifications. Kent points to a primer gray Chevy Nova, void of any motor and resting on the concrete floor. Its chassis sits next to it like huge bones longing for the muscle of the car that it will be. “That’s a total restoration,” he explains. “It’s getting a new modern motor.

We call it an LS motor. It will get all kinds of upgrades. It’s going to be candy apple red.” His voice carries a small lilt when he mentions the color.

He points to a ‘56 Oldsmobile on a lift. That one, he says is going to be part of a giveaway at the Atlantic Nationals car show in 2020. He mentions that he and automotive customs legend Gene Winfield worked together “chopping”, or reducing the frontal profile of the vehicle. “We cut it 2 inches,” he says “Then we brought it back here and dropped it down. It’s going to have a wicked custom paint job – a lace roof with a custom mix of purple. It’s going to be a pretty car.”

Outside, Kent introduces “JoLine”, a 1937 Chevy that he says is his next masterpiece. “This will be my next award winner for personal use - in about 5 years,” he remarks. “That’s what the plan is.” He reveals his intent for a metallic teal coat of paint but this piece isn’t about Kent’s talent as a painter.

“This one will show my metalworking skills,” he says, looking at her like a lost love as he mentions that he leaves in July for a car show in Canada. “It takes up about 8 days of my life, then we’re at Syracuse.” He turns away and makes for his office.

Inside the office, magazine covers, photos and awards belonging to “MayBline” his 1951 Fleetline, cover the walls. MayBline is a Brandywine Candy color and was described by Hot Rod magazine as “Textbook Perfection.” Kent has won over 50 awards, both national and international, from MayBline and others of his creation.

He mentions two of his cars have placed in the top 100 cars in the nation since 2013. Kent considers himself an artist. Each vehicle is its own canvas and each one tells him its name and how it wants to be recreated. “I’ll tell you what I do,” he says. “I sit down in a rolling chair and look at the flow and the line and it tells you what it needs.”

While Kent is well known for his jaw dropping skills in custom paints and designs, he says his favorite part of the restoration process is the metal. “Metal working makes things happen,” he said. “I create things. You can buy things but when I was coming along I didn’t have enough money to buy it but I could get a piece of old

sheet metal and cut it and create what I wanted. I can take a piece of flat metal and make 10 curves. That’s what I really like. I want people to look at what I’ve done and instead of saying ‘that’s nice,” I want them to say, “How the hell did he do that?”

In the business more than 20 years, Kent said he started in custom work when he was only about 9 or 10 years old. He recalls that his daddy owned a general store and it was the place for people to hang out. “Everybody came out to work on their hot rods then they’d go down and race at Eaton Ferry Bridge on Saturday night,” he admitted. “I was a kid and all of daddy’s people, they were the crews for the Fords. The Chevys were somewhere else.

They would all be drinking and having a good time.”

He looks out the window while he recalls that in those days he would hold the wrenches and be the “gopher” but as he got older those guys did too. “They got older and wanted to spend more time drinking,” he says, then laughs. He looks down a bit, then continues. “They would pay me to put in a clutch or a transmission for them and they would sit around and drink.”

Kent laughs then shares that a lot of people ask him what his goals are for the future. He remarked that he wants to pass his skills along - teach young people how to do custom design. He said that not everyone is cut out to be a doctor or a lawyer. Some people are cut out to be fabricators and he wants them to understand that they don’t have to be stuck. They can learn to be creative, to take mechanical and fabrication work to higher levels and they can have fun. “I was self-taught,” he says in a thoughtful tone. “I watched people. I worked for free to pick up on their skills. That was my YouTube. Now it’s on the computer and you can see 20 people doing something. That’s no sign they all are right but you can get a little something from each one.”

He talks about how he puts in 150 percent on each of his creations and how it’s so much more than the physical labor - it’s the planning, organizing and overseeing as well, that makes these custom creations the works of art they become. “How do I charge for the hours I’m awake at night thinking about the project,” he asks. He talks about his son, A.J., a 25 year old, Kent says, is already showing great skill. He expects him to become great in his own right. He mentions Mike Moran as well. “He’s been in this business a long time. They both put in just like I do,” he says. “Kim works, too. She welds and grinds and takes a lot of nice pictures.” Kent says he has a lot of appreciation for his mom, dad and God for where he is today and that he gets to live a life that allows him to do this work. A friendly hug and a wave says it’s time to go.

There aren’t a lot of dirt roads anymore. Your tires make a distinct sound when you drive across the sand and rocks.

Dirt roads are reminders of hard work and grit. This dirt road leaves no disappointment.

Located in an out of the way residential area of Chase City, Va. you would never know it was there were it not for signs pointing the way. From the moment you arrive you’re filled with a sense of wonder and awe. From Hudgins Street, near the gift shop you’re greeted by a fieldstone wall, dotted with recesses filled with stone work of animals, religious symbols and other characters.

Griffins and lions perch atop the wall with all other manner of magical beasts. Windows of ornate iron filigree give opening to peer inside and leave you with the impression that the wall is not so much to keep people out but to provide a sense of privacy for those inside that come to meditate or just commune with nature.

The sound of trickling water draws you to its music well before you reach the venue office and gift shop at the Edens Entrance. The small fountain and stone seats beckon you to sit for a while and you wonder if it’s even necessary to make your presence known. The words “tranquility” and “serenity” come to mind as you peer out through the well shaded garden strewn with streaks of sunlight.

Making your way to the building you are greeted by the fragrances of wood and age when you open the door. The office is connected to the Hudgins house and holds information about the gardens, museum and area, as well as small mementos to carry home. The Edens Entrance was named for Alice Leigh Edens Hudgins but it could just as well been named for that little slice of heaven we’ve heard so much about.This five and a half acres of artistry within the natural elements was the vision of Lucy Morton Hudgins who started the formal gardens in 1929.

Lucy married Edward Wren Hudgins, former Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, and as a tribute to her husband the Edwardian Entrance on the north side is filled with obelisks and Roman statuary.

The garden was Lucy ’s life work and according to Liz Lowrance, Executive Director, she was inspired with a vision. Placards in the garden detail the regional plants including roses, hydrangea, yucca, ivy and azalea, trees including maple, oak and pine and over 300 herbs and wildflowers are sown.

Lucy, being of Scottish descent and related to the First Duke of Argyle, named the garden after the seat of the head of the Campbell clan, “MacCallum More,” according to Liz. “She was a genealogist and she researched all that stuff." she said.

Inside the wall, surprises greet you on every turn.

Greenery on every side melds into Coats of Arms, battle scenes and even a primitive clock connected with the wall.

The subtle lines of the Greek statuary along the western wall at Spencer Street and Watkins Way play nicely with the linear edges of the walkway that gives way to the chiseled structure of Roman statuary. The Moon Gate, a circular opening ornate with wrought iron filigree, offers a window to the outside world.

The garden paths made from stones, slate, brick and other materials meander through the Rose, wildflowers, Pink, Joy and future Children’s Gardens, taking you to magical and breathtaking places named for family members and those of influence. This particular path leads

to Spencer Street. Kiosks and plaques provide information about the family, their ancestry and their inspirations.

In the spring, said docent Terry Fletchum, the pink of the Azaleas and other blooms are breathtaking but even in the recesses of summer when the blossoms are scarce, the quiet tranquility and lush green lend an allure all their own. The natural beauty is inviting and calming to the nerves.

On the east side of the garden near the museum is the Spanish Cloister and Pink Garden which is accented by the 12 Granada Lions fountain. “It’s a replica of a fountain in Spain,” said Liz The sunlight plays gently on the Cloister side, while the fountain plays in the shadows. The sound of the water is refreshing as you sit along the stone benches watching the goldfish play. An occasional splash from the giggling water feature adds a momentary surprise to the experience. According to Liz, Lucy’s vision was expanded

by her son, Commander William “Billy” Henry Hudgins, who added the more statuary, ship anchors and other decoration. “Lucy wasn’t really interested in all that,” said Liz. “She just wanted her flowers.” She explained that originally the property was just a field and that Lucy wanted to build terraces with flowers. It was Billy who built the wall and expanded the garden after financial issues halted Lucy’s work.

His most notable contribution to the garden was the Samurai Warrior statue, a Meiji period bronze figure. Dating to Tokyo in the 1890’s, Billy purchased it while serving there. Fletchum advised that the warrior was originally located in the garden. It was damaged during a particularly bad storm and was relocated to the museum where it now stands in all its fully restored glory. The handicap accessible museum is located on the east side of the garden along Woodson and features local artist exhibits through the summer as well as five Hearth & Vine 19 Summer 2019

permanent exhibitions.

The Arthur Robertson Arrowhead Collection, one of the permanent displays, is an impressive collection of projectile points spanning the Archaic through the late Woodland Periods but it’s more than just arrowheads.

Soapstone cooking vessels, clay and stone pipes, bone and shell tools, polished stone pendants, atlatls, as well as chipped stone and ground stone axes are all part of the collection. Robertson, a Chase City native, began collecting as a child and continued for the next 70 years.

The collection houses more than 50,000 points including those made of beautiful clear crystal. You can’t help but wonder if they are magical.

Outside on the Bishops Byway and Church Circle, stone tablets reminiscent of the 10 Commandments line the walkway leading back to the Hudgins house and office. Visiting the MacCallum More Museum and Gardens is well worth the time.

The gardens open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., closed on all major holidays and are available for meetings, educational classes and group tours for a small fee. A Spirited Revival

A new take on a historied building brings great views and comforting spirits to the region.

‌ ile Historic Weldon may be famous h for its Rockfish, business partners Bruce Tyler and Michael Hinderliter are looking forward to bringing new attention to the region in new ways.

Weldon Mills Distillery and tasting room recently opened along the banks of the Roanoke River with intent to produce top shelf liquors for the delight of the public. Local history is integral to this establishment. It's housed in the former Roanoke Navigation Company’s corn mill, built in 1892, that was later the first commercial electric power plant in North Carolina. The immaculately restored tasting room lies at the end of the Roanoke Canal Trail, a seven mile walking path following the course of the river downstream from the Roanoke Rapids Lake. Weldon Mills Distillery is the perfect place to stop for a respite, take a trolley and tour the distillery. River Park and the Weldon boat landing is nearbye as well.

whiskey, bourbon, rye and vodka in the 34,000 sq. feet facility that was repurposed and equipped to bring fine spirits to the region. Tyler said the ingredients for the distillery's premium products will be sourced locally whenever possible and always from North Carolina.W hile the distilling process seems simple, it takes a real expert with a keen and developed sense to know when to “cut” the product. Tyler and Hinderliter brought in award winning distiller Mike Norman, who began his career as an admitted moonshiner. Norman said it was in Franklin, N.C’s furthest mountainous reaches where he worked his first still. “It's in the very western corner of the mountains,” he said, then laughed, “We’ve got all kinds of rocks there.” These days, Norman has gone straight and has merged the “recipe” with the chemistry to produce award winning products in Kentucky and Iowa. He laughed when he talked about the culture shock that he experienced when moving from the far reaches of the south to Iowa. “God

got tired before he made that place,” he joked. Eager to move back to the Southeast, Norman said he was pleased when Tyler saw his information at the American Distillery Institute and decided to call. “We had a lot of the same ideas so I came to look at the place,” he said.

The primary product for Weldon Mills will be bourbon, according to Norman. He said there are lot of laws that govern the ingredients and determine the proof of the final product. “It takes about six months to make top shelf in small barrels,” he said of the bourbon. “While time is passing, there is vodka and gin. We'll make them in small batches and serve it in the tasting room.”

While Norman said he misses a lot about his moonshining days he remarked that there’s a lot to be said about the new, modern stills and processes. “You have more control and there’s less chance of scorching,” he said and while ingredients, temperatures , and time are variables that must be strictly adhered to, there are secrets to the recipe and technologies that otherpeople don’t know about that make a premium liquor.

Tyler and Hinderliter said they were excited that their establishment has the opportunity to bring people to Bruce tends bar and chats with locals at his new establishment.

the area. “There are so many cool things to do,” Tyler said, mentioning that Halifax County has much to offer whether you're making a day trip or staying awhile. “You can hop off Interstate 95 and stay a little while. " he said, "We have plenty to do and places where you can stay.”The two mentioned they will be naming their products in honor of the river and its bounty, including a “Rockfish” brand. Tyler also said part of the proceeds from the business will be donated to benefit Rockfish and their habitat as well as the families of fallen soldiers. Hinderliter said the business has been blessed to be very well received by the community. He loves the venue and its placement and he looks forward to success.

FROM HUMBLE TO THE HONORABLE - MS. ELLA J. BAKER

C

oming from a small town may be one of the best ways to learn about yourself and from others. It produces a kind of wisdom that you will eventually pass on to someone else. Ella Josephine Baker did just that with people she met throughout her life in her role as a friend, mentor, great-aunt, cousin, co-worker, community organizer and social justice and human rights activist.

Ms. Baker was born on Dec. 13, 1903. A graduate of Shaw University, she played a key role in civil and human rights organizations across the nation working alongside noted civil rights leaders W.E.B Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, A. Philip Randolph and Martin Luther King Jr. She is ranked as one of the most important African American leaders of the twentieth century having mentored many emerging activists including Diane Nash, Rosa Parks Bob Moses and Stokely Carmichael through the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). She was born right here in the small town of Littleton N.C. – great things can generate from small places. A woman of great wisdom, she was fond of saying “Give light and people will find the way.”

Ms. Baker believed in getting things done and left

a profound mark on all those who knew her, especially those where were blessed to be close.

During a recent forum her great-niece, Dr. Carolyn Brockington spoke at a panel discussion about Ms.Baker.She described her great-aunt, who was very much a part of her childhood, as a patient woman and good listener. Dr. Brockington said Ms. Baker instilled the value of a good education and said that she encouraged her to achieve beyond the limits of her own past. Ms. Baker watched with pride, as she did with all those she taught, as Dr. Brockington progressed to become a successful neurosurgeon and renowned researcher.

Preserving Ms. Baker’s legacy has become an important goal to many in the community and her childhood home in Littleton continues to be maintained by her great-niece. There are plans for its restoration and development as a historic destination for educators and families and an Ella Baker Historic Highway marker has been placed on Highway 158 East located near the home.

Ms. Baker’s legacy as facilitator and a resource for community engagement are set the tone of Ella Baker Day events held on April 15 each year and organized by the Ella Baker Educational Project of NC, Inc. Hearth & Vine 27 Summer 2019

Ella Baker Day is recognized in North Carolina with annual celebrations held in Halifax and Warren Counties. Freedom Rider Bob Zellner recently spoke to a group of divinity students during an Ella Baker tour in Littleton and stated that he believes Ms. Baker’s style of organizing people was greatly influenced by a concern for the needs of one’s neighbor that she witnessed from her extended family in the Elam community. That same collaborative style of organizing has been adopted in the learning environment that exists at the Ella Baker School in New York. Her concern for the needs of one’s neighbor and respect for the dignity of all is demonstrated at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland California. A collection of her writings is currently being prepared for an exhibit at the Schomburg Center in New York.

Much work has been done in the past 20 years to preserve the legacy of Ella Baker or “Fundi” as she was often fondly called. One such work, the documentary, “Fundi”, the story of Ella Baker, records segments of Ms. Baker’s life and her interaction with others. One of those segments is of a family gathering where Ms. Baker gave her undivided attention to a ten-year old boy who was facing challenges at school. It was her engaging voice and and demeanor that instinctively made him open up to comfortably sharing. She is remembered fondly for her extraordinary way of 1964 - Ms. Baker attends a Southern Conference Education Fund connecting with people. Ms. Baker was known for her meeting in Waveland, MS interaction with college students and young adults in Hearth & Vine 28 Summer 2019

G ro u p s o f yo u n g people would wade through their emotional responses to the turbulent circumstances during the 1960’s in the south. She thought of herself as the conduit for those conversations and guided the decisions of the students as they prepared to protest social injustices that were an affront to equity and respect for the dignity of all human beings. Ms. Baker may be best remembered for mentoring a group of college students at Shaw University that eventually formed the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). 2020 will mark 60 years since that well noted event. In commemoration, the Ella Baker Educational Project of NC is making plans to highlight that milestone and will produce a special commemorative resource magazine.

Ella Baker worked with other notable organizations such as Dr. King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the NAACP and has been recognized as the mother of the Civil Rights Movement.

W hether in the company of a young famil y member, college students, or her contemporaries she was considered a reliable constant, for thr ight, honest and authentically caring force. She never sought media attention for her work, but her influence can be measured by the number of institutes, lecture series and training centers across the country bearing her name. They keep emerging and currently there is the Ella Baker Intern Program of the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York, the Harvard Divinity School’s Ella J. Baker and Amzie Moore Memorial Lecture Series, the University of Michigan’s Ella Baker-Nelson Mandela Center for Anti-Racist Education, the Children’s Defense Fund’s Haley farm in Clinton, Tenn. as referenced from Ella Baker, Freedom Bound by Joann Grant.

Ms. Baker was 83 when she passed away on her birthday Dec. 13, 1986 in New York City leaving a respected legacy that continues today in the form of organizations that educate and stimulate the conscience to create a more just and ethical society.

Halifax, North Carolina is the birthplace of American freedom and now home one of the most unique culinary experiences in the region.

Halifax was steeped in notoriety well before the modern era and is a substantially imporant factor in how the country became what it is today. On April 12th 1776 the Fourth Continental Congress met in Halifax, N.C. and passed its own official declaration of independence from English rule with the signing of the Halifax Resolves. This became the foundational stone by which the official United States Declaration of Independence was created and adopted three months later.

Area native Glenn Patterson Wilson was born in Halifax and grew up in the home of William R. Davie, noted Revolutionary War officer and 10th governor of North Carolina. The home, an important historic site sitting astride the Roanoke River, was later donated by the family to Historic Halifax. Patterson's lasting impression of the area’s history followed her when she made a life for herself in the hotel industry. After working with Marriott International for 32 years, traveling the world and creating beautiful places for people to enjoy, she returned to Halifax in 2015. Wilson said her return wasn’t about bringing the big city back home. For her, it meant taking everything she’d learned and using it to bring out the best of what was already here. “There was no adjustment,” she said. “At my core.

I’m a small town girl. I think small town It’s my upbringing. You deal with everybody. In the cities people are isolated to whatever section they’re in. We’re lucky we all live and work together. We’re not divided up.” On King Street, the main thoroughfare through town, the old hardware store sat idly. Patterson confided she had a lot of fond memories of the place. She recalled people gathered around the old pot-bellied stove talking and drinking Pepsi. “Because this is the South and we drink Pepsi,” she remarked.

She bought that hardware store and began its transformation, saying that through the years she’s found that things become more beautiful when they are paired with things that are less refined. She used relics of a bygone time and comfortable furniture to create a waiting area that encourages sticking around for a while. Edison bulbs give the place a warm and inviting feel and play games of shadows across the hardwood floors. The bar begs you to come and have a seat while the friendly staff go out of their way to make you feel at home “I wanted to create a warmth and sense of community,” she commented and admitted that seeing the place lit up at night, hearing the people inside talking and laughing gives her a great sense of pride.“My profession and career career was design,” she said. “So, yes it was all

A lot of time and effort was put into the aesthetic of the building but even more goes into creating culinary standards for the region. She exercises strict control over the menu, then dishes are created by Chef Tyler Smith. “He does put his spin on most things though,” she said. Tyler studied at Johnson & Wales but credits his parents, who are pastors, for his love for food and cooking. Being the pastor’s child, he said, exposed him to a lot of mentors in Southern Cuisine and lots of opportunities to cook. Tyler said his most inspired dish is the pulled pork – a dish that takes countless hours of cooking and tending. “I could safely tell you that I had a lot of mentors that are skilled in pig cooking,” he remarked. “In fact, some of them got so good at it that they stopped competing and started judging. The pulled pork sandwich, every time I make it, it takes me back. It makes getting up that early worthwhile.”

Tyler admitted he has secret ingredients, which he would not share but aside from that, he feels one of the key ingredients is balance. “My mom is Filipino and they use a lot of spices,” he said. “I learned at an early aged that there is a giant world of spices and the key is perfectly balancing them.

and North Carolina sourcing. Fruits and vegetables are used only in-season. Eating at The Hen & The Hog, according to Patterson is about celebrating North Carolina food. “We don’t serve anything out of a frozen food bag,” she said in her best tone of Southern Belle.

“We have standards.”

Those standards carry over to the bar as well.

General Manager, London Harrell said that it’s local sourcing and in season fruits which make some of the interesting drinks they serve. She offered that while you can order an ordinary Cosmo with cranberry juice, you can also enjoy strawberry, watermelon or other flavors, depending on what’s in season. “We make it to order,” she said, adding that The Hen & The Hog’s very popular Old Fashioned was the result of very secret ingredients that make it beautiful as well as tasty. The Sangria they serve, is completely seasonal and ranges from apple to peach, strawberry, green apple and blackberry depending on the time of year.

For some of the best food in the region, The Hen & The Hog is worth the trip.

Ladies of the Lake A group of women with very big hearts reach out to the community and show enduring compassion to those that need it most.

Cancer is a thief that takes everything - not only in your life but in the lives of family and friends. Not everyone can reach out to help in a tough situation but the Ladies of the Lake Cancer Support Team, a group of women with a passion for helping cancer patients and their families, can. Every member of this group has been touched by cancer in some way. Some of the 20 members have even survived cancer themselves while others have family members that were diagnosed. They all know the quiet desperation of watching cancer take everything and the hopelessness that a person feels when there is nothing that can be done. Working together, however, these ladies decided that they could do something to make life better for cancer patients and their families.

“Many times, just the act of living is all a cancer patient can do. Working is not an option and the bills don’t stop just because you’re sick.” said Sarah Baltz, President of the organization. Sarah explained she knows, having experienced cancer with her mother who passed in 1997. “You’ve got added expenses of going for treatment,”she said.“You can’t drive so someone has to take you to your appointments. They have to eat – those expenses add up quickly and it’s not unusual for people’s savings to be depleted. Some even lose their homes.”

The group holds fundraisers and fun activities to raise money and through recommendations from the community, they provide gas cards, groceries, pay utility and phone bills and provide for other expected and unexpected expenses that occur when you battle for your life. “We also give money and equipment to local hospitals and oncology facilities to help make the patients more comfortable during treatment. It’s only a drop in the bucket compared to the total costs but if we can help make the experience a little more bearable to the patient and family, then we will,” she stated emphatically.

Sandy Burch, a member, said she’s glad the group makes those contributions to local hospitals to help with things like cases of meal replacement drinks and prosthetics. “I think we help a lot of people.” she said.

“I don’t say I’m in remission; I’m cured,” remarked team member Donna Burleson at a recent BUNCO game fundraiser. “I beat it to death! I’m eight years cancer free!”

It was leukemia that threatened Donna’s life and family, which required radical and aggressive treatments at the UNC Hospital. Her first round was 43 days of daily treatment. It was after her recovery that Vickie Evans invited her to join the group. “And here I am today,” she said. Donna’s eyes gleamed when she talked about how working with the Hearth & Vine 37 Summer 2019

Ladies of the Lake helped her to heal emotionally from the scars of her experience. “Being able to know what other people with cancer are going through and the strain of their financial well-being has helped with my healing,” she said. “I’m glad we’re here to help people going through what I went through. It’s so cool reaching out to the community. We know who we are helping and why and it’s a good feeling.”

The Ladies agreed that it’s the compassion and generosity of the community that enables them to continue their work – but it’s their job to make sure the community has lots of fun in exchange. To that end, the group organizes BUNCO game at the Gasburg Rescue Squad the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Lots of food, great prizes, and fun ensure a great turnout for those gatherings.

“It’s fun,” said player, Liz Boyce. "It’s a good cause for the cancer patients in the area.”

Rena Hussey agreed, “It’s a great chance to get to meet people and hang out with my Sis,” she said as she pointed to her sister, who introduced her to the game “And it’s helping a good cause.” The annual Vendor’s Fair in June draws artists and craftspeople to sell their wares and help cancer patients. Hundreds of people come out to the Lake Gaston Lions Club each year to support this cause and enjoy the fun.

The annual Holiday Home Tour, is by far the largest fundraiser the group holds. Featuring some of the most beautiful homes in the community, the tour displays seven of the area’s finest abodes dressed up for the holidays and draws people from near and far. Last year, according to Sarah, nearly 1,000 people participated in the tour, allowing the group to give $6,000 to each of the area’s hospitals. “It was amazing,” Sarah said. “We so appreciate the support of the community, all the homeowners that went to the trouble to decorate early and all the patrons who show up to enjoy the tour.”

eautiful lake views, luxury and comfort are the kind of things one comes to expect in a waterfront lake home but for the Daniels family, the feeling of home is the most important.

Liz and Tommy Daniels, owners of TCD Construction at Lake Gaston, built their home, Summerwood, with all these things in mind. Liz Daniels says their paramount concern was that their growing family have a functional and fun living space that catered to their busy lifestyle.

“This was a real labor of love for two years,” she confided. “There were lots of arguments and lots of compromises too.” Like the argument she and Tommy had regarding where to place the bed or a hundred other memories she recalls as she folds the clothes on the master bed. Perhaps it’s the built-in shelves filled with family photos and memorabilia or the eight foot picnic table in the kitchen or maybe it’s the multiple “drop zones” where the children can leave their shoes, backpacks and all the cares of the world behind. Whatever it is, from the moment you walk into Summerwood a pervasive feeling of comfort washes over and makes you feel like staying a while.

On the side of functionality, the house and grounds are designed to minimize work and give Liz and Tommy more time for what they love - their children.

They all love to be outdoors and to be active whether it’s swimming, fishing, kayaking, wake boarding or surfing, the family takes full advantage of waterfront living. That’s why, Liz said, the property they chose was so important.

Set in two premier lots overlooking a wide sandy beach and the main lake, Liz said her family enjoys some of the most breathtaking views available.

"We have almost a six-mile view,” she observed. “I can sit on my dock and see the cars go across Eaton Ferry Bridge.” She said the property sets into the cove, minimizing wave action from passing boats and the kids are better protected as well.

The outdoor kitchen that includes a fire pit and fireplace, built in Coyote grill, refrigerator, pizza oven, leathered granite countertops, a bar, outdoor speakers, firewood boxes with granite and sink provides everything

the family needs for outdoor events. She said in the warmer months they usually have breakfast and lunch outside.

“It’s open so I can see everything,” she noted, remarking that she likes to keep a close eye on the kids when they are in the water or playing on the beach.

“There’s so much outdoor living space and it’s beautiful but it makes me feel comfortable. I feel safe where we are.

It’s great for entertaining, too.”

When they aren’t out on the lake, the family enjoys the custom heated pool with sun shelf and hot tub. A waterfall with real boulders is the aesthetic focal point of this water feature but the kids enjoy using the slide the most.

There’s plenty of room for sitting in the sun or shade on the patio, which leads to the lower level of this three story abode. It features reclaimed brick pillars, a locking gate system and lots of open space for entertaining. Inside the lower level, Liz said her guests have all the space and privacy they could want along with . their own pantry, chilled wine cellar, bathrooms . with chiseled granite countertops, laundry room and many other amenities. “So they don’t feel like they are in the way,” she said. “They can do whatever they need to do in privacy and comfort. They can have their own space and they’re not encroaching” A sports room is used to house things like paddle boards, kayaks and the exercise gym but the piece de resistance is a theatre room complete with movie popcorn machine, theater lighting and a 4K projector.

“You can watch 3D if you want to,” Liz said. “We did not skimp. If you’re going to do a theatre room you should do a theatre room. You can have regular lighting and there’s lighting in the floor. It comes in handy for company. The kids like bringing their friends down here and watching movies.”

The main floor of the house is where the family enjoys most of their indoor living. Spacious with outstanding views of the lake, gardens and pool, the family congregates mostly in the kitchen. “The backsplashes are made from reclaimed brick so it has a farmhouse feel,” Liz said noting that she used a German Schumer method of white washing the bricks. “The whole house (which was built in 2018) was made to feel older than it is,” she said and confided that she always loved old farmhouses.

hile state of the art appliances from Wolf and Sub Zero make Liz’s life a lot simpler, it’s the wormy maple, picnic style table for eight that is the focal point and the center of the house. It’s the first place the kids go when they come home from school, where all their friends congregate when they visit and it makes her happy. She remarked that the sound of rain on the tin roof was the only thing to compare. The house is built around the kitchen,” she said. “That’s where everybody spends time. Everybody loves my table. When people come over this is where they end up setting. It’s where the kids do

homework and where I cook dinner. I couldn’t ask for it to be any more perfect.”

The living area is bright, with lots of windows.

Liz said she chose recessed cabinets and shelving in order to keep that space open. A central fireplace gives off a warmth and feeling of family. While the master bedroom is spacious with water views and a fireplace of its own, Liz noted that the master bath is the place where you want to stay. Complete with marble tile, Courier countertops and vessel style raised sinks, this room is built to encourage personal hygiene. In fact, according to Liz, everyone in

the family fights for a turn in the “community shower.”

She said she prefers the soaking tub after a hard day, however and described the experience to “sitting in a glass of sparkling water.”

The walk in closet comes complete with pull down steps to accommodate her height challenges. “The steps are for short people,” she said and laughed. She joked about how difficult it would be for her to hang clothes or reach the top shelves without it. The main floor also features a walk in pantry, another laundry room, 46 foot chandelier that Liz remarked was quite a challenge to install and the drop zones for the children.

The children’s rooms are upstairs complete with custom bedrooms, more laundry facilities and a bathroom dedicated to the family’s favorite team – the Virginia Tech Hokies. A 3,000 square foot garage opens into the back yard, where the kids enjoy playing basketball. Liz smiled while telling how she accidentally assembled the goal wrong and had to start over before the kids could use it. “They’ve really enjoyed playing with it though,” she said, then laughed.

The house, which has countless amenities inside and out, carries the warmth and charm that only comes from a home. “This house is where we live,” she said, “This is where my heart is.”

Beyond the Sunset Whether for its ambiance, perfect sunset views, or great food the WatersView Restaurant is a favorite dining establishment on Lake Gaston and has the awards to prove it, with People’s Choice Awards in numerous categories as far as 2013.

Sporting majestic views along the main lake of the waterfront and Eaton Ferry Bridge the WatersView, located at 2107 Eaton Ferry Road, the establishment is aptly named and is unrivaled in waterfront atmosphere. With both indoor and outdoor dining it’s an experience you’ll not soon forget. Colorful sunsets year round seem to pop as the sun kisses the horizon, leaving you breathless. The sunsets alone are plenty of reason to stop by but Owner Billy Benson and Operations Manager Ali Porter said a friendly atmosphere, top quality food and drinks, and some of the best service in the region make the WatersView a place to visit often.

It’s all about teamwork according to the couple and always trying to improve, whether it’s the grounds and building, the service or the lunch, dinner or drink offerings, they strive for perfection. “Everybody here is like family at the core,” said Ali. “People here take their work personally and everything is a cut above.”

Billy agreed and commented that he and the staff work hard to make sure that customers realize they are guests and are always welcome. “We have an atmosphere of comfort and sophistication and it doesn’t matter whether you’re wearing jeans or a dress,” he said. “We have people wearing everything from prom dresses to shorts and a T-shirt but no one is out of place. They’re not our customers, they’re our guests. We want them to be treated like they are in our home.” Billy noted that today it's almost unaffordable to go out to a movie and dinner anymore but at the WatersView the entertainment is always free. With groups like Boyd & Morgan, Midnite Shade, Steve Hyman, Acoustic Edge, Pure Acoustics, Mike & Amber and Uncorked every weekend throughout the summer season, it’s a relaxing way to end a day of fun on the water. Grimm reiterated that guests are the number one priority and that his goal is to make sure that everyone walks out with a smile on their face. “That’s what it’s all about,” he said. “They come in here and we can turn a mediocre day into a positive experience.”

became his passion and much of his time was devoted to classes in Danville, Va. “I think it’s amazing that you can take simple dirt and make something beautiful,” he said, noting that he finds the work rewarding but that he also enjoys the people he meets along the way -whether it’s fellow artists or customers.“I’ve met a lot of amazing people and made friends, world- wide,” he remarked. It was around that time that Tim’s heart throb, Janet Gaddy appeared on the scene. An award winning artist by her own right, trained by master potters in Italy, Tim said she gave him great praise and

Home is where the heart is and that being the case, world renowned potter, Tim Moran, will always be at home in Lake Gaston.

“I moved to Lake Gaston in 1977,” Tim recalled as he spoke about how much he once enjoyed the adrenaline rush of buying and selling radio stations. Moran was around when radio was WSMY and WCBT and the work afforded him a glamorous lifestyle. Traveling extensively throughout Europe, he collected art glass created by the great masters of the Bohemian region during the turn of the century’s Art Nouveau period. The inspiration that collection provided would prove to be one of the greatest investments in his future.

Fate had different plans for this self-described “tough businessman” and around 1998 a divorce and triple bypass surgery ensured the artist’s adrenaline junkie days were over if he wanted to continue living. Moran sold his radio stations and wondered what to do next. He started learning pottery, he said, as a form of therapy. It helped to give him peace, keep him centered and calm but it quickly

encouragement during his early days and he credits her with much of his success. The two are still together at their home and studio retreat in Brown Summit, North Carolina. Tim, still an overachiever, said he dedicated himself to becoming a certified Master Potter and creating his unique style of work.

While he predominantly uses the Japanese Raku method for his porcelain creations, it is his glazing method that has brought him the most acclaim. Moran has a degree in chemistry and decided to use that Hearth & Vine 51 Summer 2019

knowledge to create a “crystalline process,” in which zinc crystals grow inside the glaze during a multi-level firing schedule. “It takes up to 30 hours and 10 steps to create a single piece and many are not successful,” he noted.

process of glazing. With over 1,500 pieces dating between 1850 and 1920 in that collection, Moran said the subtle earth tones, blues, ambers and greens lend themselves well to the crystalline process.

The Ring-Gong Vase, according to Tim, is his signature piece. Combining functionality within the art form, his Sunrise was featured in Lark books’ 500 Raku: Bold Exploration of a Dynamic Ceramics Technique in 2011 as one of its top pieces. The vase features cascading ginkgo leaves that represent longevity and happiness. Moran said that it’s a special way of wishing blessings on his buyers and explained that the piece is also a functional decanter.

“It’s hiding out in the shape of a gong – It can hold your favorite beverage,” he said, then laughed.

Speaking more seriously, he commented that he appreciates beautiful art with a purpose. “You can take a deep breath and drink it in,” he said, then laughed again. Moran’s work has received numerous awards, is featured in many art venues across North Carolina and Virginia including the Greensboro Historic Museum for the past 15 years, at festivals and in numerous publications across the country. was six,” he revealed, adding that art practically saved his life and opened new doors for him both professionally and p e r s o n a l l y. H i s d a u g h t e r s , A s h l e y a n d Lindsey both take great interest in their father’s work and he proudly announced they are both very artistic themselves. He said he’s proud of their accomplishments and he looks forward to seeing their future contributions. While it took serious matters of the heart to put Moran on what he believes is his path of destiny, he said he’s certainly enjoying the fruit along the way. The corporate world, according to the potter, is a far cry from the world he lives in now – in Brown Summit, N.C. with his love, on a farm with a studio, meeting and working with world renowned artists.

He said that someday he hopes archeologists will unearth some of his signed and dated work and realize that he was “here a little while.”

Luxury and fun is what lake homeowners had in mind when they nestled Lake Gaston’s Waterfront Dream home on three acres at Poe Creek.

This luxury compound is one of the most popular properties to visit by water according to its owners. During peak season boats can be seen lined up waiting to glimpse the cabana that boasts 1,258 square feet with tongue-and-groove pine ceiling, a Perlick single-tap kegerator, drawer beverage fridge, and ice machine and a roof topped with a scale replica of UNC’s old well - a pool waterfall and three and a half acre private peninsula.

A family retreat, the property also includes two large homes, two-slip boat dock, infinity pool and spa, 270 degree water views, an expansive fitness center and six hundred feet of manicured shoreline.

“We bought and renovated the main house and double boat dock in 2010.” the owner, who asked to be called “Heath”, said. “They were both built in 2009 and had no previous owners. We built the cabana in 2013 and the guest house in 2014. With so many indoor and outdoor activities this property is truly a 12 month family retreat. We’ve held rock concerts in February, meteor shower observation parties in the heated pool in December and pop-up chef dinners for 40 friends at the cabana in summer.” Heath described this Waterfront Dream as a Hearth & Vine 58 Summer 2019

“The spa and infinity pool are perfect for the less lake-water inclined,” he remarked, adding that there is ample opportunity for guests to relax and indulge as sunny chaise loungers on the pool patio, shaded cocoon swings or the daybeds beneath the covered porches surround the guesthouse. Those features are credited to Durham designer Heather Garrett who fully furnished and accessorized the guest house.

“Heather designed the guest house entirely turnkey without consulting us,” Heath remarked.

“We had learned to trust her after several projects with her on our French Tudor style home at Chapel Hill Country Club. The lake guest house project is pure Heather Garrett design at its most raw form. We were out of town when she finished the installation so we arrived at the lake a few days later to see every fixture, rug, and piece of furniture for the first time. We love every inch of the house.”

Garrett said she used a fresh, clean, neutral pallet to create the ambiance of this property which facilitate a relaxation and enjoyment.

fall and spring, a pool deck area and the party deck on the lake. For the party deck, Heather said she employed the use of hardy Sunbrella upholstery and drapery.

The goal, she said, was to make a seamless conversion of the space’s use from entertaining and partying to lounging. According to Heather, one of the greatest challenges was to choose the perfect tile color for the pool to seamlessly match the lake’s reflection during the day. The home was purposefully built to be intimate – a place that brings people together. The spacious and homey main house features five bedrooms, three full baths, three half baths, a two car garage, stainless steel appliances, indoor fireplace, covered porch with gas fire table, covered sandbox, one thousand foot mountain bike trail and pump track and a half acre fenced yard. It is beautiful in its own right but it’s the guest house that draws the most attention.

“While yoga is most often practiced over the water in the cabana or on top of the boat dock, rock climbing, running, biking, TRX workouts, weightlifting, shooting hoops, and jumping rope are comfortably accommodated in the expansive indoor gym facility,” Heath commented.

Sid Cutts said the guest house is a modified version of a design by Eric Moser Design Group out of South Carolina. He described the framework as a “cottage.”

“Where this design is concerned, don’t take the term ‘cottage’ lightly,” Sid remarked. “It has classic elements. There’s nothing gimmicky. This is like a walk back in time. This is reminiscent of a time when people took the effort to put transoms over windows. There is art in the building but inside it’s a modern playhouse.”

When asked if there were any particular challenges presented, Sid smiled, then remarked, “The owner pushed the envelope on how much fun he could fit.” Heath was quite complementary of Corbitt Hills’ recommendations for Waterfront Dream. “Sid Cutts is an incredible builder - guiding us to choose exposed tongue and groove pine ceilings in the gym, the sweeping exterior porches, the on-water cabana and exposed four inch pine beams on the porch roofs,” Heath recalled. “He also helped us undertake our incredibly aggressive in-ground concrete pool design which required raising the grade on the lakeside of the guest house by eight feet then excavating back down to create an elevated sight line from the porches to the guest house by eight feet then excavating back down

to create an elevated sight line from the porches to the water level then out to the lake. The house still feels like it floats in the air every time I sit in the living room or swim in the pool.”

W hen asked about one of his favorite attributes, Heath said it had to be the floors.“We chose a singular flooring product for the interior and exterior floors of the guest house,” he shared. “Last minute we switched from Ipe to thermo-treated Ash in six inch wide planks so we could control the exact color of the wood inside and outside for years to come. Both the interior and exterior floors are joined, sanded and sealed like interior hardwood floors creating a single sightline inside to out through the eight large windows and four mahogany doors that surround the 2,000+ square foot first floor living space. The flooring supplier believes we’re the only interior and exterior installation of thermo-treated ash hardwood flooring in the United States. It creates an incredible experience in the space that is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. It’s always atop compliment when new friends arrive at the house for the first time.”

On the topic of the 29-foot rock grip climbing wall in the indoor gym Heath remarked “The system lets anyone climb safely solo without a belay partner by simply clipping into the automatic belay line,” he said. “When a climber drops, the system instantly and safely lowers them to the ground no matter their weight or height.” The manufacturer of the auto belay system believes this is the only residential installation of their system in the United States. “They sell the system exclusively to professional indoor climbing gyms and national rock climbing competitions”.

Born from the Banks The fascinating story of this small town along the banks of the Roanoke River began before the founding of country

hile little is known about precisely when the Native Americans first arrived, it is well known that once they did, many decided to stay. Dubbed “Rawrenok,” in the Algonquin language, the Roanoke River ran free and was notorious for overflowing its banks and decimating the countryside while many fell victim to its rapids. The Tuscarora tribes that inhabited both sides of the Roanoke found the river’s bass, brim, crappie, shad and rockfish, as well as the bountiful game – white-tailed deer, black bear, squirrel and rabbit to be a good food source to supplement their crops of corn, legumes, squash and berries.

The English decided to take off from the coast for a little exploratory journey to see what they could find in the late 1500s. They stopped in modern day Weldon, unable to traverse the rapids they settled along the banks of the river and began trading. In the mid-1700s, explorer

John White illustrated Striped bass, also called Rockfish, on the Roanoke River reaching five to six feet in length and described the fish as being so thick in the River that one might be able to walk across it on their backs.

Rockfish were an important part of the Native American diet and were used for fertilizing crops. By the late 1800s nets were used to harvest the behemoths and one haul reported 35,000 fish, some weighing 80 to 90 pounds each. In the 1890s it was not unusual to hear reports of Rockfish weighing in at 125 pounds.

Each year they travel up the Roanoke to spawn in the shallows of the estuaries surrounding the river then swim back downstream to feed and grow larger in the Atlantic. A single Rockfish can live up to 20 years and it’s not unusual for one fish to make multiple trips in a lifetime.

Today, Weldon is known as the “Rockfish Capital of the World” and more than 50,000 anglers converge on the small town to wet a line and put up a fight against these sport fish that come up the river by the thousands in the spring. Facilities, including a boat ramp, day use area and ample parking provided by the N.C. Wildlife Commission make that experience all the more pleasant. It was 1752 when Samuel Weldon purchased over 1,200 acres, which was called “Weldon Place,” “Weldon’s Orchard,” and “Weldon Landing.” People finally settled on calling it “Weldon.”

By 1820 businessmen upriver near Danville, Va. looked to better ways to move their goods – especially cotton and tobacco - downstream.They knew an enterprising opportunity when they saw one and created the Roanoke Navigation Company. They convinced Weldon businessmen to come aboard and the Roanoke Canal was born. Work began in 1812 and the canal was completed in 1824. At nine miles long, the rapids were still very dangerous and the Bateaux, a flat bottomed barge-like vessel, was used to pass around the “Great Falls.” Only eight feet wide and about 65 feet long, these vessels could transport up to 10 tons of cargo and were propelled by poles. Trading vessels would load up to the gills upstream, then travel through the canal to the township where the goods were transferred to ships and taken downstream where it was traded in other areas. The Canal Trail in Weldon was completed in 1823. Visitors can enjoy that piece of history today while hiking or biking on the Roanoke Canal Trail that passes by the historic site. This well-kept area is filled with natural beauty and is a great way to spend an afternoon enjoying the scenery.

Weldon was incorporated in 1843 and in 1894 it had become a major business district with 10 general stores, two drug stores, 10 grocery stores, six saloons, two beef markets, five candy stores, bakers or confectioneries, millinery (hat shop) a beer building company, Post Office, storage warehouse, a hotel with a bar and dining area, warehouses, a telegraph and a ticket office. It was the Roanoke Canal and railroads that brought trade and the township expanded to become one of the largest incorporated townships in Halifax County.

All of these people, of course, needed somewhere to live and Weldon offered antebellum homes, featuring late Georgian, Federal, Queen Anne, Victorian and Greek Revival style architecture on tree lined streets.

Weldon had its own winery in the 1800s, owned

by William Garrett. It was originally built at Medoc Mountain but was later moved to Weldon to take advantage of the Canal and railroad. Garrett’s wines were made from the native Muscadine grape and recognized worldwide.

The Railroad put an end to canal transport in 1856 but Weldon established itself as one of the first railroad “hubs” in the United States, when in 1840 the 161 and-a-half mile long Wilmington to Weldon Railroad established

Weldon as a destination. It was the longest railway in the world at that time. Union Station, owned by the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line Railroads saw people from all over the world board and disembark. It was one of ver y few facilities jointly owned and operated. Today, though the trains no longer stop, passenger traffic includes the daily Amtrak Silver Meteor, Silver Star, Silver Palm, Auto Train and Carolinian, both north and southbound.

Preserving the town’s history has become an important goal for Historic Weldon’s Mayor, Julia Meacham. A native of the area, Mayor Meacham said she’s seen the small town in its glory days when the railroad stopped and the Rockfish ran and she’s determined to celebrate and rebuild that history. Meacham has recently undertaken the effort of educating students and civic organization on the long and illustrious background of one of the most famous stop off points on the East Coast. She said by preserving its history the town can develop a bright future for everyone to enjoy.

“I thought it should have a name but never came up with one,” he said thoughtfully. “I always called it ‘the lake house’ and somehow that just seemed right. Located on a beautiful main lake point lot with massive rock formations, it seemed the perfect spot to build my dream rustic contemporary home.” Bob said he drafted the plans for the home by hand and took them to an architect who made them manifest. Those plans changed and evolved over the course of construction but endeared the home to him more fully.

You can hear the love in his voice and the memories he’s shared with the people he loves when he talks about it.

This one and a half story walkout has over 3,000 square feet dedicated to wide open spaces and blending in. The abundance of expansive windows provides copious waterfront views and Bob said he thought the naturalized lot was so beautiful that it didn’t need anything extra and that the Lake House was designed with that in mind. He wanted the place to blend seamlessly with its surroundings inside and out but he also wanted this to be a space where anyone who dropped by, be it family or friends, could enjoy their stay in comfort.

The slope of the property is capped with retainer walls of fieldstone to complement the natural look of the cedar wood home.

“This is on a steep incline so you have to face that you’re going to have to have retainers,” he said. “Originally [the wall] was concrete but we wanted more warmth, a more natural look to go with the house so we decided on the fieldstone. If you look at it, there’s no trees, no landscaping, just natural rock formations. You should see it in the winter. We wanted a rustic look on the interior and exterior, more like Hearth & Vine 66 Summer 2019

like something you’d find in a mountainous area.”

Bob meticulously selected the inside décor, using pine paneling in the living area to maintain the light value and other finishing throughout the rest of the house to compliment it. He said he chose neutral and green values with ver y little red or blue and furnishings that invoked natural components. He was particularly fond of the Bristle cone pine table and the pine four poster bed. “The material selection was critical,” he said. “It includes random width heart pine floors, beamed and pine paneled ceilings, Italian thin set rustic tile, stone fireplace and other stone architectural accents, multilevel antler chandelier, and custom lamp fixtures by the top U.S. made Craftsman artists including Old California Lamp Co., Steel Partners, and Arroyo.

A home with such rich rustic contemporary design needed accents to provide the right compliments. The majority of the furnishings are all custom designed to enhance the unique natural feel. These include many custom pieces made by Pine Ridge Log Furniture, Old Hickory, and Stone County Ironworks. The rugs are handmade in the craftsman style and custom made to fit the home’s decor and earth tone colors. With two separate master bedrooms including en suite bathrooms, huge great room with 22 foot beamed ceilings, sunroom

with vaulted wood ceiling, basement family room and bar with a pool table, the home provides ample space on three levels for either privacy or group time together.

He remarked that one of his favorite features is the dock. It was built before maximum size reductions were placed so there’s enough room to fit recreational products and people simultaneously. He said that he realizes his is not the only dock that’s special on Lake Gaston, but his includes an integration of the decking and sunburst railings with the wide double staircases to the dock that he believes is absolutely beautiful. The 1,500 square foot dock with double boat slips, Doozi lifts, 25’ x 32’ upper sundeck and 16’ x 20’ lower also gives it a high degree of functionality. The double power awnings provide shade on the lower dock whenever desired and with unusual distance from neighboring docks, there is plenty of privacy. “It is one of the last ones approved of this size before the maximum size was reduced to 1,250 sq. feet,” Bob said. “This space is so valuable when hosting large groups of guests at the dock and accessing your lake toys: the pontoon boat, ski boat, and jet ski. It’s been fun choosing floats, skis, etc. to make sure all the guests enjoy the full ‘lake experience.’ The dock can be used and appreciated year round.”

Bob said the Lake House is a truly unique and remarkable place to create special memories with family and friends. “For nearly twenty years the Lake House has been instrumental in giving my two daughters and their friends an unforgettable childhood. Vacations and weekends with family and friends have always been easy to organize and affordable.”
