Welcome Our New Head Boy and Girl We have had such a fantastic start to this school year with lots of things happened already. We welcomed the start of a new school year with our new head boy, Danny, and head girl, Ella. They have been doing a great job so far and are wonderful ambassadors for the school.

Year 6 Red Ridge Residential Just before October half term, Year 6 spent an exciting few days braving the ‘Great Outdoors’ at the Red Ridge Centre in Welshpool, Mid Wales. The children had a great time abseiling, zip wiring, kayaking and caving to name but a few of the activities they completed during the week! They all showed real resilience and perseverance in conquering new challenges and overcoming fears. We are so proud of each and every one of them.

Cross Country Winners!

There was an amazing performance by Team Meriden at the Solihull Small Schools Cross Country Running Competition at the beginning of October.

Congratulations to Ella, who came 1st in the girls’ race and well done to Lauren, Erin, Edward and Harrison for showing resilience and all finishing in the top 20!

School STEM Focus this Autumn This half term, the whole school enjoyed a week of STEM activities in school. We invited many STEM ambassadors in to speak to us in assembly about their jobs and lead activities with different classes.

Each class also took on a STEM challenge based on the work of Practical Action, an organisation which seeks to meet the sustainable development goals through technological innovation. Key Stage One developed floating gardens, Year 3 developed water filters.

Year 4 investigated solar energy. Year 5 developed a system to transport tomatoes and Year 6 designed ways to recycle plastic.

The week culminated in an open afternoon, where parents were invited in to see the work the children had produced and try the science activities we had explored.

School Charity Launch

This year we will be supporting toilet twinning! By donating £60 to twin each toilet in our school, we will help fund a project in a poor community that will enable families to build a basic toilet, have access to clean water and learn about hygiene – a vital combination that saves lives.

As we raise the money to twin, we receive a certificate to put on each toilet door, showing a photograph of our overseas toilet twin and GPS coordinates so we can look up our twin’s location on Google Maps!

Fundraising Quiz Night We held a quiz night on 10th October, to fundraise for the school. There was a wonderful turn out and we saw lively competition between the teams at a super evening of quizzing, eating and drinking! The overall winners received a hamper for their thorough knowledge of old movies stars, geography and TV theme tunes to name a few. Congratulations to them. We raised just under £400, which is a fantastic amount to be spent directly on the children!

Soon after Jesus was born, some wise men who learned things from stars came to Jerusalem from the East. They asked, “Where is the King of the Jews who has been born? We have seen His star in the East. We have come to worship Him.” Matthew 2:1-2 Earlier this year I was able to tick off one of my ‘Bucket List’ items. Since watching Blue Peter at the age of 8 and seeing the discoveries at Pompeii I’ve been fascinated with the extraordinary preservation there. Visiting Pompeii was truly amazing; everything that I’d imagined and more!

As I walked the streets that had been suspended in time I was musing.

The people of Pompeii had seen the signs – frequent earthquakes in the preceding years and then the ‘smoke’ from the mountain – but they either didn’t understand their significance or chose to ignore them. It made me wonder whether we are the same in so may ways. Do we see the signs in this age? I’m not talking huge signs on the national, or international, scale but rather the signs in our own lives. Are we aware of our own feelings? Our aches and pains? Our secret yearnings? All too often in the busyness of life it is easy to underestimate the significance of the signs – or to choose to ignore them. But just like the people of Pompeii we do so at our own peril. These are signs that all is not well with us physically, mentally and spiritually. We get caught up in an endless spiral where busyness leads to more busyness. We are unable to stop and take stock. We shrug our shoulder and say that we’ve just got to keep on going. But is this helpful? Is this healthy? I suggest not.

Give yourselves a gift this Christmas season – the gift of time – it’s not selfish, in fact it’s quite the opposite – it’s selfless. There is the old saying that you can’t drink from an empty cup. So stop, reflect and refill your cup. A bit of self-care goes an awfully long way!

In the Christmas story we hear of people who see the signs… and respond to them. The three wise men saw a star shining in the east and followed that star which led to the infant Jesus. We all know the gifts they brought (gold, frankincense and myrrh) and may have heard the joke that if it had been three wise women they would have stopped to ask for directions, and hence arrived on time and brought practical gifts such as a casserole and nappies. But do you know how practical the gifts the wise men brought were? Did you realise that each of these gifts was a sign too? Gold representing His kingship, frankincense a symbol of His priestly role, and myrrh a sign of His death.

Sometimes we see the signs but don’t know their significance – or choose to ignore them!

Do so at your peril! STOP now. Rest in the love of God. Only He can meet your inner needs.

‘Protecting our Environment for Future Generations’ was the theme of our September meeting, when Liz Galloway (a W.I. Trustee) reminded us of the wide variety of ways in which we can do just that. The W.I was one of the first organisations to draw attention to ‘Plastic Soup’ and has campaigned for action on ‘Climate Change’. Our motto should be Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Mary Pemberton came to talk to us in October about ‘My Girls the Bees’ – and her girls are real bees! She had taken up bee-keeping after retirement and found that it became practically a full-time job that she really enjoyed. She told us all about the life cycle of bees and brought jars of honey which were eagerly snapped up. She also brought prepared sheets of beeswax for each one of us to make a beeswax candle – and also sheets of reusable beeswax food wrapping – very environmentally friendly!

November was the turn of Susan Tall to give us a fascinating talk about War Memorials. Her interest began with her local memorial in Kenilworth and she has travelled around the country, photographing many memorials. There are apparently over 100,000 of them, taking various forms. She has also done some research into the names on the Kenilworth Memorial and uncovered some very interesting background stories. Elizabeth Spencer

Greetings from the Methodist Church How quickly this year has flown. It only seems to have been a short while ago that I was writing an article for Winter 2018 and now here I am again, a year later.

As we approach the end of the year, it is good to take this opportunity and reflect back over this past year. What are the things that jump out most for you?

Life is a series of ups and downs, of highs and lows, and so I am sure there are things that you are really thankful for; things that have caused pain and sadness and sorrow; things that you have been able to laugh about and other things that have caused real joy.

Whatever has happened this year, as Christians we believe that God walks with us - through all the ups and downs of life.

He is faithful and has promised that he will never leave us. We see this so clearly as we approach Christmas. We are reminded how God, in Jesus, left the glory of heaven and was born as a baby; that he lived his life, knowing both the joys and the sorrows of humanity, and that at 33 he was killed on a cross. Then three days later he rose to life.

Our God is not a distant God, but one that is close by - an ever-present help in times of trouble the Bible tells us. Through Jesus we can enter into a living relationship with him. As we celebrate Christmas in just a few short weeks I encourage you to look on the Christ child who was born for you and for me, to see the gift that was given to the whole of humankind.

As with every gift this gift from God has to be received. As with every gift that is given to you, it has your name on. The question is, will you receive this gift?

I pray that you will know the presence of Jesus in your life this Christmas - Emmanuel, God with us - and that you will experience the joy of that first Christmas as angels declared glory to God and peace to all on earth. May you truly know the heart peace that only He can bring.

Keelavite Hydraulics Limited When I was a girl in 1950’s Meriden, Keelavite was a popular village employer providing a range of occupations for men and women. In the interwar period 1919 -1939 there were still many traditional jobs here on farms and at the garages, two pubs and various shops. Some girls also worked domestically at Meriden Hall and smaller houses like the Vicarage. This factory represented a new era. I never knew at the time when Keelavite opened, but most villagers knew of Mr Keeling, its owner, who lived at ‘Meriden House’ (see photo) near the church. George Vyse Keeling was a selfst made man and proud of it. Born in Silverdale, Staffs on 21 Feb 1901, he left school at 13 and went down the mines. He became a militant trades' unionist and during the General Strike of 1926 was sacked as a trouble maker. Suffering from TB and black listed as an employee for 2 years, he chanced to meet a future Labour Cabinet Minister, then a young lecturer, Hugh Gaitskell. Keeling made an impression on Gaitskell who encouraged him to improve his chances by studying at Ruskin College, the Labour Party College in Oxford. He won a major scholarship worth £1,000 to study at the London School of Economics for a BSc (Econ). The men remained friends right up until Gaitskell's death.

In 1933, he married Londoner Nancy Bradbury. They moved to the Coventry area where he set up a number of manufacturing enterprises, though the only evidence of this is in articles written long afterwards. In autumn 1938, with business partner Francis Levetus, he co-founded ‘Keelavite’ built on the left hand side of the Birmingham/Coventry Rd. just beyond the new housing developments at Millisons Wood. It produced machine tools, rotary pumps and valves.

The Keelings lived at Millisons Wood in one of the detached houses (Whitecotes) between Albert Road and the top of Meriden Hill. In the 1939 survey, he is listed as a managing director. I asked a friend of mine, Mrs Atkin, who joined the firm at 18 in 1960s staying about 20 years, to add some of her recollections of this time. ‘Mr Keeling knew all the workers by name and was always polite raising his hat, a battered trilby, to the ladies. Mr Levetus, beautifully spoken, was absent-minded, forgetting which room was his office!

Like Mr Keeling, he loved racing cars and owned a large Jaguar.’ She gained promotion to supervisor of the 12 woman typing pool, and then moved to the Technical Sales department. With frequent foreign visitors, she found herself caring socially for their wives. Each Xmas, there was a memorable Works’ Dinner at the Leofric Hotel. The factory site had several facilities such as a cricket pitch and large car park. Mr Keeling loved cricket, horse racing and football, encouraging others to participate in various teams. Working conditions were pleasant with a 40 hour week, on-site restaurant and transport for employees travelling from Coventry, though she had a car. There was enough time in the lunch break to walk to the Millisons Wood shops or the top of Meriden Hill to Gibsons nursery.

Next to the factory was a Service Station run for him by Alfred Jansen. Looking back, she felt it was her happiest place of work. In 1952, Mrs Nancy Keeling, his first wife, wrote and published a novel, ‘Gaunt Hound’. After her death he seems to have visited Peru where he was horrified by the poverty. His second wife Cara was a Peruvian. Keelavite expanded in the 1960s , winning many significant contracts e.g. the Drax power station in Yorkshire, dredging the Mersey and platforms for rocket testing, to name but a few.

Its success gave impetus to take over bids and in 1969 it was bought out by Joseph Lucas and merged with 3 other local concerns. Though Mr Keeling officially retired in 1970, he remained interested and active in its work until 3 months before his death at Meriden House in Oct 1976. His tombstone epitaph comments on his philosophy: generosity and kindness to others. Legend had it that he was buried in the village church yard in his evening clothes. I wondered what brought him specifically to Meriden. I do not know except his first wife Nancy had an aunt Mrs Holmes a Court living at Millisons Wood in 1941.

A Message from Councillor Tony Dicicco When I talk to local residents, climate change and the environment are near the top of their concerns.

People understand the harmful effects that modern living can have on our environment and the need for us all to start doing things differently, such as moving away from burning fossil fuels, reducing waste and recycling more. The UK government has been at the forefront of taking action to reduce climate change. The Labour government was the first to legislate to set a target for carbon emissions reduction in the Climate Change Act in 2008, committing the UK to reduce its carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. A plan was put in place by the Coalition government after 2010 to meet this target. However, it was realised that this target did not go far enough and Theresa May’s government in 2018 brought in a ‘net zero’ carbon target by 2050 (at the latest). This means that the UK should have zero net carbon emissions by 2050: some sectors of the economy, e.g. agriculture and air travel, could continue to emit carbon but this would be offset by ‘negative emissions’ from other initiatives such as planting more trees. It’s all very well for governments to set targets and it’s right that they should provide funds to reduce carbon emissions. But, at the end of the day, if environmental damage is to be avoided, then it’s up to all of us to do our bit. Sir David Attenborough was recently asked what people can do to reduce their impact on the environment. His very effective message was simple: reduce waste. We can all do our bit by reducing the amount of food we waste, the number of miles we drive, the amount we throw away. These simple steps will make a difference.

Government bodies such as local councils can also make a big difference. I was very pleased that Conservative-led Solihull council recently proposed a motion at the Full Council meeting on 8th October which sets Solihull council to be net carbon zero by 2030. This means that the council will take action to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants from its own activities, buildings, transport, resources and waste, ensuring that it continues to invest in the borough’s natural capital, greening the borough’s economy through its local plan and investments. Councillors from all parties were united in backing the motion. A key element in delivering the council’s ambition will be the council’s Climate Change Prospectus which will set out the targets and means of delivering them. I am confident that by adopting a sensible, economically pragmatic and sustainable approach, Solihull council and its residents will make a significant contribution to meeting the UK’s climate change objectives.

We’ve enjoying continued researching and taking part in hair shows and photographic sessions alongside iconic hairdressers, to introduce hair and skincare ranges that are natural, ‘green’, organic, ocean safe, ‘free from’ aren’t animal tested and are made in this country, so we can continue to deliver the best possible product and service.

Outside the ‘walls’ of our salon, things are a little more complicated in the world; we all feel it. Despite this noise and stress, you’ve supported and believed in us. The summer months are a quieter time in Meriden Rotary Club as we continually have members away on holiday. For those that were here we have had interesting speakers ranging from our District Governor Bala Jaspal, the Right Hon Dame Caroline Spelman MP for Meriden and Lord Plumb who has been the only British President of the European Parliament to more every day topics such as steam train driving, possible driving problems as we all get older and mental health issues that may affect any of us.

We have also had a speaker from the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund, which is our main charity this year, explaining some of the research that is beginning to help people suffering from this terrible disease and Alan Lole, one of our honorary, members came and told us more about how he became involved in Meriden events. We also heard from speakers for the Bwengu Project, a charity involved with education in Malawi and we will be supporting one of their projects later in the year.

We have sponsored two teams from Woodlands School in Coleshill in the Rotary District 1060 Special Needs Football Competition and we have just obtained funds to provide TS Stirling Sea Scouts with new sports kit. We have also helped fund two local young people to take part in international projects. We joined with several other clubs to promote a scheme new in this area but well tried in the West Country called the Midlands Community Draw that enables small local organisations to financially benefit from a draw with a £1000 top prize at no risk to themselves. The winning ticket will be drawn in November.

We attended the first Fresher’s Fair in Hampton In Arden to promote our club alongside other local organisations. The event was well attended and will be repeated next year. We have welcomed two new Rotarians, Peter and Vicki, into the club and we are sure they will become very worthy members.

There have been club visits to the water mill at Burton Hastings and more recently a weekend away in Winchester. Last year President Mike established an annual inter club sporting competition and the second one has recently taken place as a darts competition and Meriden won the shield.

Plans are now being finalised for our Santa Fun Run on 1st December (See back page) and our Santa Sleigh collections.

Laughing gas is no laughing matter!

Hands up if you are completely fed up with the amount of fly-tipping in our green and pleasant lanes - including metal ‘creamer’ chargers. These small silver cylinders (used legitimately in the catering industry) are filled with highly dangerous Nitrous Oxide or ‘laughing gas’ and provide low cost ‘highs’ when inhaled. See photo below. They can also produce dangerous side effects. They provide a potentially lethal cocktail too if used in conjunction with alcohol. Cars parked in lanes with multiple occupants engaged in these activities are very intimidating to residents and some locals who enjoy walking, cycling, horse riding (etc.) start to avoid affected areas To be clear, it’s illegal to provide these chargers to others for recreational purposes (‘2016 Psychoactive Substances Act’) as it is to fly-tip or litter from a vehicle. But has anyone in authority taken any notice or tried to do anything other than clean up the mess (once reported)? And it’s not just about prosecution given that users/ addicts may also be highly vulnerable individuals warranting expert support to help turn things around.

Well, after reporting this issue ad nauseam (as well as becoming a near full time litter picker) and - frankly - getting nowhere, I am in the process of organising a meeting with the Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands, a local councillor and other disgruntled residents in Meriden. We are also raising the issue of local burglaries (more on that in the next MM edition!) Whether it is prevention, prosecution or intervention, the issue is simple: it’s about having the evidence to PROVE that the occupants of the car parked at X location caused the litter (etc.) even though it wasn’t there before they arrived and was there when they left!

So, this has led me - and others - to call for mobile CCTV technology to be deployed at local drug using and fly-tipping hotspots to obtain the evidence required to allow the authorities to take the right action - be it intervention, caution or prosecution. It might seem ‘big brother’ but quite plainly, without evidence, the law is meaningless and the implications for residents are that we are stuck in ‘groundhog’ day i.e. complaining, reporting and litter picking without anyone ever being able to deal with the root cause.

We cannot allow fly-tipping and the litter of drug consumption to become the ‘new normal’ in our lanes and green spaces. Neither can we ignore the danger to those who may be vulnerable. Watch this space for an update.

Balsall Common U3A Balsall Common U3A has over 300 members from the Balsall Common and Meriden area and runs 30 activity groups. It is run by members for members.

Duke of Edinburgh Award The Heart of England Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme has been celebrating the attainment of silver and bronze awards with a special ceremony where students were presented with their certificates.

After an introduction by science teacher and Duke of Edinburgh Manager Mr Nance, the Principal Miss HughesWilliams gave a brief address in which she spoke about how our own school values chimed with the qualities of the Award.

“Everything about these words: honesty, courage, determination, kindness and of course humour are qualities central to becoming a well-rounded and successful person which resonates strongly with the vision of the Duke of Edinburgh Award that sets you up for life.”

Mr Nance spoke about how much the implementation of the award at Heart of England relies on volunteers. “We depend heavily on our community volunteers and they are a real strength to our scheme and we are so grateful,” he said. “We are indebted to you and to the assessors who give up so much time for the students.”

After and introduction by Mr Nance, volunteer Dr Rob Walker spoke to the students about their achievements

and used the opportunity to encourage successful bronze candidates to continue to silver. “You’ve done a lot of the leg work,” he said. “All the basic training is done so why not continue?”

Local Duke of Edinburgh Operations Office Jo Huck also praised the awardees and presented a certificate on behalf of the scheme for the staggering 767 hours of volunteering served they’ve chalked up this year. Jo told the students: “Congratulations to every one of you. That is superb!”

Once the brief preamble was over, the successful students were called up in their walking groups and presented with their certificates and an exclusive bronze or silver enamelled badge by Miss Hughes-Williams followed by photo opportunities and lots of happy smiles.

When all the groups had been up, Mr Nance concluded the proceedings and said: “It’s a privilege to be here and to celebrate your accomplishments. You have contributed to our school and local community in amazing ways. I hope you take away many lasting memories of what

I know people who do not love that particular brand, Once I pop – I can stop, and equally they do melt in your hands, as the chocolate covered hands of my young nieces have taught me!

As Head of Sixth Form, my vision is simple; to create well-rounded individuals who are prepared for life beyond the school gates. A Message from Dame Caroline Spelman MP As I have announced, I’m standing down and there is talk of an election as I write, so this may be the last contribution I will make to the Meriden Mag. As I look back over my 22 years, I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve my country as an MP. It hasn’t always been easy as there is always pressure on our area for development as we are one of the best-connected places in the country. What with the airport the motorway network, two train lines and possibly a third, people move here for the quality of life?

Solihull is synonymous with good schooling and many children like my own have had a great start at our local schools. But there is never any room for complacency in a turbulent world. Our manufacturers face the challenge of competitive pressures from global trade. The car industry which has enjoyed such a renaissance has a huge challenge of the transition to electric and autonomous cars just at a time, when we are trying to leave our largest market. With the right investment the West Midlands can emerge as global leader in this race to produce the next mode of transport but there are many global contenders for that prize.

Already the government has invested in the Faraday Institute to develop battery technology, but it will need a Gigafactory to produce the new batteries at scale. Only with this kind of investment from the public and private sector will the next generation go on enjoying the quality of life that so many of us do. I do not want our area to become somewhere people feel left behind.

That means we also have to redouble our efforts to help those who are disadvantaged in our midst. I have enjoyed seeing so many young men and women get a well-paid job through apprenticeships in manufacturing.

I have avoided using the B word up to now but however we Brexit there is work to be done healing the divisions which have been made manifest through it. So, I’m going to work on a reconciliation process run out of Coventry Cathedral once Brexit is done using a citizens’ forum to facilitate a civil conversation about our differences and make recommendations on how to address them.

A Message from Councillor Diane Howell

It is nearly 6 months since my election and I have continued to work hard alongside Cllr Tony Dicicco and Cllr Ken Allsopp to represent the Meriden Ward.

We have secured air quality monitoring equipment in Meriden village. The Council’s Public Health team will be monitoring the results closely and analysing any findings outside normal limits.

At the time of writing the results of the Oakervee Review into HS2 are not known, however we’re continuing to hold HS2 to account and have repeatedly asked for assurances that vegetation will be spared until the results of this review are published.

HS2 have not yet been given a formal notice to proceed with construction and until this is granted, we must do all we can to protect the grasslands, hedgerows and woodlands that line the route.

In October the Conservatives, the ruling party on Solihull Council, proposed a climate change motion, committing the Council to be carbon neutral by 2030. I spoke in support of this motion and was pleased that it was unanimously passed. Climate change affects us all and it is right that as your Borough Council we lead the way in setting out a practical response to this serious issue.

Last month Cllr Tony Dicicco and I welcomed West Midlands Mayor Andy Street to the Meriden Ward. As Chair of the West Midlands Combined Authority, Andy’s remit includes public transport, housing strategy and strategies to support the economic growth of our region.

It was great to talk to Andy about the work he has been doing, including lobbying for improvements in our public transport and successfully securing Government funding to clean up derelict brownfield sites across the region. Housebuilding across the region has increased by 20% over the last year; without Andy's regional house building push Solihull Borough would be under pressure to find even more sites for new homes to fulfil the region's unmet housing need. The West Midlands has also been chosen as a pilot site for 5G; this is a great opportunity for local businesses to utilise the latest data download technology.

Being part of the West Midlands Combined Authority provides Solihull Borough with many opportunities to tap into the resources available to the wider region. I'll continue to work closely with Andy Street and the Combined Authority to make the most of this for Meriden. I would like to wish all residents a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to continuing to work with you all in 2020.

Honorary Alderman David Bell We were all delighted, at Full Council on 8th October, to confer on David the title and status of Honorary Alderman. As he had served as Chairman of the Planning Committee for a number of years, that is the least we could do! David was also a member of the Cabinet 2004 - 2008 and Mayor 2008-2009, representing the Meriden Ward from 2000 to 2019. Everyone knew and liked David and recognises the great job he did as Councillor, as well as his untiring efforts in the community.

For history buffs, the word Alderman comes from the old English “ealdorman” - elder man, used by chief nobles presiding over shires. Nowadays, councils have the power to appoint “Honorary Aldermen" as a reward for their services as councillors. The office is non-political and, in Solihull, can be awarded to ex-councillors who have rendered at least 15 years’ eminent service and made a significant contribution as a Member of the Council. The pay is even worse than for a councillor - in fact it is nothing at all - but gives the much sought after right to attend as observer at various meetings of the council; to receive invitations to civic events; to walk in front (!!) of serving councillors; wear the badge of office, and if that is not enough - the flag of the Borough must be flown at halfmast at the Council House, when the Honorary Alderman is called to the Committee Meeting in the “Upper Chamber”.

H of England High Speed Railway Action Group - Richard Lloyd (Chairman) The saying goes "The darkest hour is just before the dawn", and the last 3 months have certainly been the bleakest and blackest inflicted by HS2. The current "preparatory works” north and south of the A45, ensure we'll be stuck with a dreadful legacy, even if the project gets kicked into the long grass. Regrettably, HS2 Ltd aren't unaided in this needless destruction. We can't blame anyone but Solihull Council for the roundabout that's now going to be built on the A452 north of Balsall Common, despite all the objections to the proposal in both the Commons and the Lords, as well as the relevant Solihull committees. It will be another unwanted source of inconvenience, pollution, noise, lighting, and (probably) accidents, adding yet more delays around Balsall Common. Opening up access to Berkswell from the A452 seems certain to duct traffic along unsuitable routes, and is the opposite of what local people said they wanted in a survey in 2013. The £2 million or so of public money won't come from Solihull's account, so perhaps wouldn't have been available to improve the several road junctions in the area that actually do have a history of serious collisions. On the other hand, roundabouts are usually funded from developers' pockets to give access to new housing estates, so there's plenty of speculation about ulterior motives. It doesn't help that planning permission was decided behind closed doors, without public scrutiny. There were two opportunities for the matter to be decided in an open meeting of the Planning Committee, which, given the number of objections, is a requirement of the Solihull procedures. In fact, there's been a complete lack of public consultation on this particular road "improvement". It remains to be seen whether the complaints process can shed any light on what's been going on. In the last Meriden Mag, I explained the concerns about the substitute route for the Kenilworth Greenway for use during HS2 construction. There was nothing that hadn't been expounded repeatedly in Solihull, yet HS2 Ltd are pressing on, cutting corners as they wish, because of a conscious decision not to even apply for planning permission. Parliament provided a 10-metre wide strip of land for the temporary route, which was promised to be "of an equivalent standard" to the existing former railway line. What HS2 Ltd say they'll build this winter is a zig-zag path, fenced in by barbed wire to 40% of the allotted width, with no landscaping at all. If you were expecting rides and strolls through a leafy wildlife haven: hard luck. Solihull Council is just letting them get on with it. In the fullness of time, there'll be a retrospective planning application, but based on how the planning system has been working, I wouldn't bet on Solihull telling them to tear it down and build what Parliament was (mis)led to expect. Nothing happens without a reason. It clearly suits someone to short-change the public in this area. Finally, of course, we have the on-going saga of construction traffic. An application was made for a low level of traffic up the A452, and due to the objections from Meriden, Balsall and Berkswell parish councils, and help from Cllr Diane Howell, the Planning Committee only approved the application subject to conditions. These would have reduced pollution, and lessened the chance of a repeat of the traffic foul-up caused by temporary traffic lights. The success didn't last long: HS2 Ltd came back and said they weren't doing it. What should have happened was an appeal by HS2 Ltd to the Secretary of State, Grant Shapps. Instead of that, Solihull rolled over. The route for the main construction traffic is a bigger worry. A proposal was made to keep all construction traffic out of Balsall Common by placing a temporary bridge over the current railway line. HS2 Ltd said it would take 18 months to get the agreement of Network Rail. How long ago was that? 30 months. These are the silly games they get away with.

There have been a number of well supported fundraisers since the last issue of the Meriden Mag. In September our trip to Tutbury Castle raised £300. In October, at The Manor Hotel, Lesley Smith gave a gripping characterisation of Peggy Knight MBE. Performing to a capacity crowd, she provided an amusing, but also very touching insight into Peggy’s remarkable WWII story. This event raised a wonderful £2,800. Many thanks to Lesley, The Manor Hotel and to all those who supported us. In November, The Queen’s Head hosted a quiz night for us. Presented by the ever-popular Rick Wise, ably assisted by Pat, the evening swelled our donations this year by a further £165. Again, our thanks go to the Queens Head and to all those who joined in this event.

The money raised from the generosity of this village goes directly to Cancer Research UK. In 2018/19 CRUK spent a massive £442million on new and ongoing research projects, supporting their aim that “Together we will beat cancer”.

Our final event for this year will be held at the Heart of England Social Club on Friday 6th December, doors open at 7.30pm. It will feature live entertainment from 60’s Tribute Band “Retro” and a bumper raffle with many exciting prizes. Tickets are £10 each and available through Sue, Carol, members of the committee and from Abbie at the Club.

1st Meriden Scout Group – News from the Green Hut Beaver Scouts The new leadership team of Maggie and Marie, together with a lot of parent and Young Leader helpers, are settling in well to the Monday evening Beaver Scout meetings. Maggie has successfully completed her initial Scouting Leadership training modules.

Since the start of the autumn term a number of new Beavers have been invested into Scouting In addition to the games that Beavers enjoy there has been a full programme of Scouting work undertaken. The Beavers have achieved their Cyclist and Explorer badges. They have also been working on preparation for Remembrance Sunday and a bonfire night party.

They are looking forward to their Christmas celebrations during December and will be doing further exciting things in the new year. Early in 2020 several of the Beavers will be moving up to Cubs, so there will be space for more 6 - 8year olds to join. The meetings take place on Monday evenings 6.30 - 7.30pm the Scout Hut, near the Doctors Surgery.

Cub Scouts We started this year with a nature theme, learning the countryside code and popping back to Meriden Pool to see what changes that had happened since the last time we had been. The cygnets had grown!

Meriden Cubs attended a Wilderness camp in Stafford, a wet but fun weekend enjoyed along with the Scouts and Explorers. Trying lots of new activities and gaining lots of badges due to the diversity of the Camp. From wood carving, to small game prep, that’s pigeon and pheasant not Monopoly or Ludo! A brilliant weekend was had by the leaders, and the smaller people.

November brings bonfire night. Last year our theme was Medieval, so this year we have gone space age, with the Cubs busy making themselves look like moon walkers or aliens - or is that the props the Explorers have made?? I’ll tell you next issue.

If you are 8-10½ years old and looking for adventure and to learn something different, pop along to the Scout Hut and try something new.

If you’re 18yrs+ why not become a helper / leader and help Meriden Scout group thrive.

A Message from the Three Explorer Scouts who went to the World Scout Jamboree Following 20 months of fundraising and preparation, on the 20th July, we set out for the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA. We joined the rest of our unit in Stratford, travelled to London by coach and flew from Heathrow. Initially, we arrived in New York where we visited sites including Central Park and Times Square as well as going to the top of the Rockefeller Center. Following that, we continued up to West Virginia by coach over two days. The Jamboree itself, at Summit Betchel Reserve, was full of new experiences. The camp of over 45,000 people, plus day visitors, was quite something to behold.

Our Unit camped amongst US, Finnish and Spanish units. We really enjoyed the plethora of activities available. However, by far the highlight was the opportunity to make friends with people from other nationalities and backgrounds from countries as varied as Angola to Taiwan. At the spectacular closing ceremony, we were honoured to be addressed by Ban Ki-moon an Ex-Secretary General of the United Nations.

Tired and saddened that this part of our journey was over we travelled on to spend four days in Washington DC. While in Washington we were able to visit Smithsonian museums of our choosing. While in Washington we met up with all the other units from the United Kingdom and watched a baseball game together. Then, we flew north to Canada, and Nova Scotia where we experienced the hospitality of the 1st Dartmouth Scout Group. We spent one night staying by a picturesque lake in a Canadian Wood Cabin. Despite the insects, the serenity of the location made this enjoyable and relaxing. We then travelled into Halifax having an amphibious tour of the city and visiting their citadel, operating as it did in the 1870s.

We appreciate that without the support of so many, we would never have been able to have such a wonderful opportunity.

We look forward to inspiring the younger members in our Scout Group and sharing some of the spirit of the Jamboree with them. I cannot believe that Christmas is just around the corner. It feels like it was only a few weeks since we were packing up all the trimmings in 2018, where has all that time gone. The trees are looking beautiful at the moment full of autumnal leaves with a vast carpet of them paving streets and roads as they shed ready for the cold winter. Thinking of the seasons it reminds me that just like the trees we have seasons in our lives also. We have times of blessings and where everything just seems to be going our way and then out of the blue all that changes and everything that could possibly go wrong seems to do so and we feel that we take one step forward and two back.

As we’ve mentioned before we are part of a team that runs a filling station in Hampton Manor once a month which has been going for nearly five years. In November we will have the last one there and we start in a new venue in Knowle village hall in January. There are a few reasons why we are moving into this new season one of which is that we have reached capacity and we need to be able to accommodate more people.

Most people don’t like change in their own lives, their environment, circumstances etc. but it’s true to say that often whether we like it or not eventually most things change. Things don’t remain the same for ever.

I for one am comforted by the scripture that states God is the same yesterday, today and forever. It makes me appreciate that in our ever-changing world (don’t even get me started on Brexit) God is constant, reliable and a very present help in times of trouble.

We would like to wish everyone reading this article a Happy and blessed Christmas and New Year with a gentle reminder that if this year was not a good one for you it doesn’t have to be the same next year. There are many things we can do to try and change our circumstances but when our back is against the wall there is often only one place that actually effects change. Prayer is powerful and effective so why not give it a try you have nothing to lose.

This year we are having our carol service on 15th December at 1 p.m. in the Methodist Church building and you would be very welcome to come and join us.

For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) May God’s peace be with you all this Christmas and New Year. Kevin and Lyn Hunt

Letter from Meriden, Connecticut, USA Put the chains on the Oldsmobile As I write this, it's snowing like there's no tomorrow -- but if there is a tomorrow, that's when I'll no doubt be making my third pass with the snow blower. Still, I'm hoping this won't be another winter like 1995-96, when it snowed any number of times, topping out at 115.2 inches, according to the National Weather Service. That record stands as the snowiest winter in Connecticut since they started writing these things down, in 1904, and it was more than enough for me. But the winter of 1993-94 was another biggie, at 91.4 inches, and 2010-11 was no slouch either, coming in at 86.4. I remember that one because I was in Los Angeles, watching the TV news at an outdoor cafe where I had snuggled up to one of those California-style outdoor heaters that take the chill off just in case the temperature should ever plunge below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Watching with great sympathy, mind you, as folks back in New England tried to dig themselves out and the occasional flat roof collapsed. My problem now -- a big part of it, anyway -- is that I seem to continue getting older, no matter what I do, so that now I need the noise of the snow blower to drown out the creaking of my knees and the snap, crackle and pop of other worn-out parts as I trudge up and down the driveway. And even my ears are affected by the cold; that is, they seem to perk up every time the guy on the radio has the nerve to report that it's 75 in Palm Springs! I used to wonder why old people went to Florida in the winter (a flat, boring place plagued by hungry alligators that like to snack on the occasional unwary dog -- collar, leash and all, in some cases -- and swarms of even hungrier mosquitoes). I no longer wonder. But just in case the old noggin was . also affected by the drop in the mercury, I looked up a bunch of statistics, wondering whether my memories of snowier winters long past might simply be the result of a brain freeze or something. Not so. While 1995-96 was the high point, in annual inches, the 1970s and 1980s were lightweights. But go back to my chief snow-shovelling years (from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, when for the most part I was still living with the folks and the folks didn't see the need to own a snow-removal machine) and those times really were pretty snowy (80.2 inches in 1960-61; 89.1 in 1966-67). So my memory of what I’ll call the Eisenhower-Kennedy-Johnson Ice Age -- a time long ago when early humans would fasten chains onto the tires of their cars for winter traction -- is that gobs of snow would fall with annoying regularity from October through March; and my brother and I would grit our teeth as we helped Dad shovel the driveway (he believed child labour builds character); and we'd be just about blinded by the snow and sleet blowing into our eyes and covering our glasses (all three of us wore them) as we strained to lift shovelfuls of the snow, which was always wet and heavy, never powder. Meriden Hill SMBC Highways have instructed Balfour Beatty to undertake vegetation clearance of the wall and banking of Meriden Hill as a structural survey of the wall is required prior to any repairs being undertaken.

Enforcement Officer and Car Parking The parish council approved the initiative of an Enforcement Officer for Meriden to improve the parking difficulties particularly around The Green. We report that 39 tickets have been issued recently and the majority of parking violations were generated from around The Green.

Please remember that the Sports Park car park may be used by residents shopping or attending appointments at The Green.

Footpaths The parish council now has copies of maps numbering Meriden’s footpaths. We welcome residents advising us of footpaths that are inaccessible, overgrown, blocked, fallen trees, etc.

However, we would also welcome some volunteers who regularly walk our many footpaths to get in contact if they would like to record issues relating to specific footpath numbers, particularly Meriden’s many dog walkers. Please contact the clerk at clerk@meridenparishcouncil.org.uk.

All the volunteers for making Remembrance Sunday memorable and accessible for the local community and visitors, the Barber Family who put the poppies onto the lamp-posts at the start of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Paul Lee for co-ordinating the Remembrance Sunday road closure with Solihull Council.

Meriden Pool update “As mentioned in last quarter’s Mag, during September in conjunction with SMBC and half a dozen volunteers from a Solihull finance company, we carried out a good refurbishment of the wood chip path running along the back of the pool. We widened and deepened it, also cleared away a lot of weeds that were intruding. We will keep a regular check on its condition, a very grateful thanks to all involved.

“Everything is now settling down for winter including the arrival of some of our regular wild Canada geese who are already having the usual squabbles with some of the local population.

“No doubt many have noted the comings and goings of our local swan population, first of all the parents moved out, apparently they normally split with offspring after 5/7 months, ours were rather early, 4 months, perhaps it was due to their inexperience. Then one of the cygnets was found with a broken wing/wings, The Swan Rescue were called in and they decided to take all three to one of their sanctuaries where they will look after them and release them again in the Spring, not to Meriden. Now, not entirely unexpectedly, the two parents have returned and should settle down for the winter and hopefully produce some cygnets in the Spring.

Snowy Woodland by Julie Hyde A little wintery scene for you, using watercolours and watercolour paper. I also used masking fluid but if you don’t have this then use a little white acrylic paint at the end.

1. Lightly draw the trees and fence, making sure the top of the fence is no more than a quarter of the way up the paper and almost horizontal at the top.

2. Mask out the top of the fence and the snow on the branches of the trees with masking fluid. Use a little soap on your brush first to protect your brush. If you don’t have masking fluid ignore this part.

3. Background. Get some salt ready then mix puddles of:• Pale Blue (weak) • Ultramarine Blue + Crimson Red (blue/purple) • Blue + a touch of Yellow (Blue/green) • Prussian Blue + Reddish Brown (strong dark blue/green) Wet the background with a mop brush and clean water so its glossy wet. With a large brush add the different colours in patches, letting them run in together. Use the blue for the sky area and then the purples and then the blue/greens and burnt sienna lower down.

Add a pinch of salt LET IT DRY. 4. Foreground. Using puddles of:• Ultramarine Blue + Crimson Red (blue/purple) • Ultramarine Blue Wet a couple of bands down the slope and across the path and then with a large brush add patches of the colours.

5. Distant Trees Mix two puddles of different shades of:• Ultramarine Blue + Alizarin Crimson (blue/purple) • Ultramarine Blue + Dark Brown (weak Blue/grey) Using a small brush or rigger bush add distant trees 6. Main Trees. Using different shades of:• Ultramarine Blue + Dark Brown (weak Brownie/grey) • Dark Brown • Ultramarine Blue + Dark Brown (strong dark) Wet the trunk with then add the colour keeping the darker colour to the right hand side let the colours run together. Start adding branches and twigs with a rigger brush. Make sure you add branches UNDER the masked snow areas. Add a blue shadow from the tree, down the slope and across the path.

7. Fence. Add the fence posts on to dry paper:Ultramarine Blue + Yellow Ochre (weak green/grey) 8. Foreground. Add a hit of path :• Burnt Sienna • Ultramarine Blue Add a few shadows with:• Ultramarine Blue (weak) Add some grasses and shrubbery:• Ultramarine Blue + a touch of Yellow (Blue/green) • Prussian Blue + Reddish Brown (strong dark blue/green) • Reddish Brown Add people with any colours you wish 9. Rub off the masking and to any larger areas wet with clean water and to the bottom add a little:• Ultramarine Blue (weak) OR add white acrylic paint.

The Spy and the Traitor

By Ben Macintyre As the title implies, this is a modern spy story with a difference. All the events detailed are completely true. They cover a period of the ‘cold war’ and the defection to the West of a very senior KGB officer. The continuous feed of information to MI5/6 over a 6/7 year period was rated as important to us as Kim Philby’s defection was to the Russians in the fifties.

What makes this book different from the usual factual spy story is that it is written almost like a novel and, as the story unfolds, you feel the tension and genuinely do not want to put the book down. For regular spy story readers, this is actually the way it happens in the real world and is a fascinating insight into diplomatic/spying operations between major countries. Real names are used in most cases, the only exception being certain MI5/6 operators who have been given false names for their protection.

I really recommend the book as a very good read.

Incidentally, John Le Carre rates it as the best true spy story he has ever read.

Gold and Silver for Meriden Archers Late September and Monmouthshire’s Caldicot Castle was the venue for the Archery GB UK National Tour and Key Event Finals, the culmination of major competitions throughout the summer.

The wet and windy finals field saw Tom Hall take Gold to become the overall Gent UK National Tour Champion, and Monty Orton take Silver in the UK Key Event Final. Huge congratulations to both of them and well done to all the other Meriden archers who reached the finals and managed to survive the weather!

At the end of Archery GB Youth Festival in August, Monty was approached by Archery GB and invited to join their National Age Group Academy. Monty is the only new athlete on the Programme this year to have achieved this place through the competition pathway, which is testament to the hard work and dedication he continues to put in. Monty will also be representing England at the Junior National Indoor Championships to be held at the end of November. Good luck to Team England!

A quest for THOMAS HENRY WILLIAMS by his granddaughter Carole Davis, aged 76 – Can you help?

I have for many years have been trying to find out what happened to my grandfather Thomas Henry WILLIAMS. I found many with the same name and of a similar age. On-line, I found a Thomas Henry WILLLIAMS, born on the 27 September 1881 and whose job was Installation and Maintenance Electrician, [all correct] living in Meriden. It was in the 1939 census. He was living at “Greengates” which I believe was at the bottom of Albert Road. At the same address was a wife, Edith H E WILLIAMS born 1893, Sarah A MARLOW born 1869, Derrick Gordan JAKEMAN, born 1932 [at school], another who because of the 100 year rule is blanked out, with the words “This record is officially closed”, and Derek LEWIN, born 1932 [at school]. I have traced Derek G JAKEMAN [mother’s maiden name HARVEY] who married Margaret A HAWKINS in Meriden, AMJ 1964. A Thomas Henry Williams died JAS 1956, Meriden, Warwickshire, aged 74. Below are the facts and stories pertaining to Thomas Henry WILLIAMS. The story is not a very happy one, but may I assure you that our only reason for looking for him is to complete the story.

Thomas Henry Williams was born in the workhouse at Southsea on the 27 September 1881 to Emily Whitmarsh. She was a domestic servant in the employment of Charles Pourtner, Portsea, Hampshire and her age was given in the 1881 census as 20 years old. The birth certificate gives the child's name as Thomas William Whitmarsh, with no father’s name given. However I am informed that the name is given in a "code" i.e. Thomas William[s].

On 25 December 1884, Emily Whitmarsh (born 9th April 1861) marries Thomas Henry Williams (born 17th Feb 1863) at Portsea Island; his profession is given as Photographer. They will have another two children, Bertrum [Bertie] Gustava and Charles [Charlie].

Thomas Henry Williams [Whitmarsh] as shown on the marriage certificate, marries Winifred Ellen RICHARDS on 04 January 1908 at Bromley Kent, his profession is given as an Electrician. They lived in Bromley at two known addresses, 3 Farwig Lane and 8 Florence Road. They had three girls, Gladys, Winifred and Elsie [my mother]. In around 1922 Thomas Henry Williams [Whitmarsh] leaves his wife and three children. Elsie the youngest was just three years old. What happened to him after 1922?

From 1922 to 1981, when his age would have been 100 years, I found eighty persons with the name, Thomas Henry Williams with an age that would have corresponded with his. I bought a few of the certificates which I thought had possibilities, but none were him. In 1939, at the outbreak of World War 2, he would have been 58, so probably did not serve in the Armed Forces. I am unclear as to what would have been his legal name, Thomas William Whitmarsh, as on his birth certificate, or Thomas Henry Williams, as on his marriage certificate? He was known by one of his brothers as Thomas [Tom] Williams, shown on a postcard dated 1915 sent to him from India, by Bertrum [Bertie].

Winifred Williams, who died 04 May 1964 at Rayners Lane, Middlesex, aged 85, never talked about him so my mother, Elsie Rockall [Williams] had only little bits of information. One thing that she did say was that he was a good man but was easily led. Both her older sisters have died. Elsie ROCKALL died 27 January 2009 at Bridge near to Canterbury. She never found out what happened to her father.

Despite his father’s profession as a photographer, living at 15 Heathfield Road, Bromley, no photographs exist apart from three photographs of three young men, Thomas Henry WILLIAMS and his two brothers.

Did they divorce? Did he remarry and perhaps have another family?

It was told that Thomas Williams [Whitmarsh] was a musician, playing the piano for silent films at the Grand Theatre, Bromley, Kent. His daughter Gladys MUSSELL nee WILLIAMS, remembered going with him to a theatre in Bromley. My mother remembers seeing a theatre programme with his name on it playing for Charlie Chaplin.

My mother thought that he worked for Borroughs and Wellcome, Beckenham, Kent. They have no records of that time. Another story is that he went to America and joined Fred Karno’s Army [a type of circus]. Another story was that he was maybe an electrician at Cadby Hall in London, working for Lord and Lady Salmon.

Meriden United Charities Charities in Meriden have existed for many years; the earliest was before 1551 and always with the same purpose, to assist people in need. Initially the Charities helped with items such as bread, fuel, teaching poor girls to read and preaching sermons at the Parish Church. Nine individual charities are now grouped together and registered with the Charity Commission as Meriden United Charities. Income from the investments is limited and is managed by 9 local trustees.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…and sound like it too (A Message from our local Police) As I write my latest message to you it is approaching the end of October. The temperatures are dropping, the days are getting shorter and with winter taking hold it will be Christmas before we know it. Just like the TV scheduling over the festive period my message will have a similar look to it. In fact much of it is a repeat of what I have said in times gone by, and what officers will be telling local communities across the country at this time of year.

But before we get down to business – firstly let me wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Now for the simple things you can do to keep these festivities crime free… As you celebrate over the coming weeks please don’t become distracted from simple car and home security. I’m sure many of you will be visiting family and friends delivering presents or finishing some last minute shopping, please be mindful that this time of the year has the potential to be a lucrative time for burglars.

Opportunist criminals know that there will be countless valuable items literally gift-wrapped and on display for them if they manage to get into your home. While no house is totally immune from burglary, a determined thief will keep trying until they come across a house that makes it easy for them, looking for homes where doors are unlocked and windows left open.

Whatever you have planned over the coming weeks please stay safe. We hope you don’t need us, but in an emergency we’re always a 999 call away. You can also visit West Midlands Police’s website where you’ll find a host of safety advice. On our website you can also use the live chat facility to contact us if you have any information on those you think might be involved in criminal activity or the sale of stolen goods. Public information is often the first step to removing criminals from our communities.

As you search for the best bargains don’t end up falling prey to online con artists touting eyecatching online offers that turn out to be bogus - and always be wary of any offer that sounds too good to be true.

Trees of Meriden and Millisons Wood Hedgerows Landing at Birmingham Airport, you see the local countryside is criss-crossed with hedgerows, a distinguishing feature of the British landscape and part of our cultural heritage that is often taken for granted.

As well as being historically significant, they are extremely valuable as wildlife habitat and ecologically important.

Hedge or Hedgerow? A hedgerow is a hedge which (currently or historically) marks a boundary between fields or with a road that is old enough to incorporate larger trees and some mix of different tree or shrub species.

Historical Context When Bronze age farmers cleared woodland to grow crops, they sometimes left strips of woodland to mark boundaries; now these are often on parish boundaries. Around Roman times, active laying of hedges began; stems are partially cut through low down and the trunks bent over sideways and contained by stakes (see picture left taken along The Straight Mile). In the north of Alspath parish (focused on the current site of St Laurence’s church), around the 13th and 14th centuries woodland was developed into small fields of about 4 acres and there are some smaller fields in this area still. Large scale laying of hedges occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries with the Enclosures. Prior to this farming was though a communal open field system with tenants having rights over a number of strips of land; these strips were consolidated together and much of the remaining common land enclosed generally with the local landowner benefiting significantly. The hedges marking the boundaries were straighter than earlier ones and dominated by hawthorn. Private Acts of Parliament made this happen with one relating to Meriden being passed in 1785. As part of the process, a new road, the Straight mile was created with hedgerows down either side.

Hawthorn Wildlife Haven Traditionally hedgerows were sources of food, firewood, medicinal plants and festive decorations. Even today, people forage in hedgerows for blackberries, sloes, elderflowers and berries and use holly and ivy as Christmas decorations. These goodies and many more are a real treasure trove for wildlife. During the 20th century many hedgerows were destroyed to accommodate larger fields and “more efficient” farming methods, but this was Holly & Ivy, Eaves Green Lane just one aspect of significant, ongoing habitat destruction. Today the remaining hedgerows are a key resource for the preservation of threatened species, including plants, insects, birds, and mammals, the most obvious being the hedgehog. They provide food, shelter and a corridor joining up isolated patches of habitat; even flying creatures such as bumble bees and bats use them as a guide. Hedgerows are significant for 21 bird species on the priority list and the primary habitat for 13 of these including long tailed tits, greater spotted woodpeckers, wren and bullfinches.

Losses in managed hedgerows seem to have halted during the 1990s and the net length now seems to be at least stable if not increasing. However, restored or newly created may not have the same value certainly for wildlife as long-established ones. There is now protection for them (particularly those more than 30 years old) under the Hedgerows Regulations of 1997, Ecological Impact

Hedgerows play a valuable role in reducing pollution of watercourses Male Bullfinch by fertilisers, pesticides and sediment, acting as a physical barrier, increasing infiltration into the ground, and through being recycled by the trees, shrubs and other plants. They also remove water faster from the soil than crops during periods of heavy rain.

So, if you enjoy a stroll around the local lanes and footpaths, why not pay a little more attention to the hedgerows you pass. See if you can work out how old they might be, consider where they fit into local history and look out for the wildlife they support. And, if you are lucky enough to have a hedgerow on your property, please do look after it!

Holly Our native holly (Ilex aquifolium) is recognised as the green prickly stuff that warms up the bleak midwinter with its glossy leaves and red berries. English holly is our most common native evergreen and is often found among ancient oaks, or as a marker tree in hedges - indicating a parish boundary, a footpath or a bridleway.

As Christmas is approaching gathering holly to decorate the house is fun on a winter walk. However it is not easy to find in the hedgerows and quite often the birds have got to the berries first. However all is not lost because there are some beautiful cultivated varieties that can be grown in the garden for all year round colour and the common variety makes a good hedge with its prickly leaves You need a male and a female to produce berries, if the bush does not produce berries it is most likely a male plant. Many varieties are without prickles and can have variegated leaves.

Holly shrubs are best planted in spring, right before they start growing but with plenty of warm weather on the way. Hollies are best in full sun with a well-drained loam soil that is slightly acidic. If your soil is very heavy, add some organic material to lighten the texture and improve drainage. Prune when necessary to keep a good shape.

Mincemeat and Apple Jalousie Serves 6 11oz/300g puff pastry (use a butter pastry like Jus Rol All-Butter) 8oz/225g mincemeat 2 eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced I tbsp. brandy or rum Brown sugar I egg and a tbsp. milk for glaze Roll the pastry into a long oblong, about as thick as a pound coin and 18in/45cm long. Cut the oblong in half.

Spread one half with mincemeat, leaving a half inch/1cm gap around the edges of the pastry and place the sliced apples on top, adding brown sugar if necessary Cut the remaining pastry with a small knife to make slits at half-inch intervals, to within 1in/2cm of the pastry edge.

Glaze with egg and milk whisked together and brush this lightly over the edges of the pastry base.

Stretch out the cut pastry on top, trim the edges and press firmly down the sides to seal.

Lightly brush with glaze.

Bake in a preheated oven at 200C/400F/gas mark 6 for 10 minutes.

Reduce the heat to 180C/350F/gas mark 4 and leave to cook for a further 10 minutes.

Serve warm dusted with icing sugar

Leeks in a cheese sauce also go well as an extra vegetable. Boil leeks for about 8 minutes, drain and use the leek water mixed with milk to make a cheese sauce and bake in the oven.
