On Tuesday 18th October Meriden CofE Primary school took part in a National initiative called RESTART A HEART. This was brought to our attention by Lorraine Mucklow who is also a grandparent of children who attend our school, and she kindly signed us up to take part. Working alongside her to help deliver CPR to our children was Paramedic Phil who works for P+Amedics. Lorraine also organised for each child in years 1 to 5 to receive FREE t-shirts with an emblem designed specifically for the school. These were printed and donated by Dean who owns the company www.brit-bear.co.uk, so a big thank you to him also.
Autumn Term Events at Meriden School
On Tuesday 4th October, Meriden Biathlon Team, Lydia, Ruby, Sam and Seren, went to St Martinâs School to swim and run. We had to run 400 meters and swim 1 length of the pool. But before we did the run! We ran fast as we could to the finish line, with Sam winning, Ruby 2nd, Seren 3rd and Lydia 4th. After the run, we got changed for swimming and luckily the water wasnât too cold. Yay! Sam did butterfly, Ruby did front crawl, Lydia did backstroke and Seren did front crawl. The places were the same as the running. We all tried our hardest, and it was really fun. We recommend it to other people next time!
On Friday 21st October Year 2's fantastic London topic culminated with a visit to the capital city! The children enjoyed an open top bus tour and boat ride where they took in the famous sights such as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the London Eye! Seeing all these iconic landmarks helped the children's learning take on whole new meaning while making memories that will last for a long time! The week before half term, our Year 6 spent an exciting few days braving the âGreat Outdoorsâ at the Red Ridge Centre in Welshpool, Mid Wales. As usual, the children had a great time scaling rock faces, zip wiring, canoeing, kayaking, hill walking and crawling through ancient Roman copper mines to name but a few of the activities that they completed during the week! The whole class pushed themselves and showed real courage and determination in conquering new challenges and overcoming fears. We believe these valuable life lessons will help them tackle the busy year ahead, especially the national tests they will sit in the Summer Term.

âBen Wainwright and Stephen Beamond from @meridenprimary at @nasenni conference on disablist #bullying in #Belfast: fantastic School Games Mark
We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded the Leading Parent Partnership Award (otherwise known as LPPA). Members of Parent Council, the staff, the pupils and our community have been working hard over the past two years to develop an integrated whole school approach to parental engagement. We were particularly commended for: âThe high commitment of the leadership team and LPPA co-ordinator, supported very well by enthusiastic staffâŚ. ...The school has substantial links with its parents where they feel welcomed, listened to, supported socially and emotionally where required, and helped very effectively to become co-educators of their children. As a result and with the good educational progress that children make, they have high confidence in the school.â
Anti-Bullying Work Recognised Mr Wainwright and Mr Beamond were delighted to be invited to the NASEN Northern Ireland conference on 'Disablist Bullying' being held in Belfast in November. It was their great pleasure to lead a workshop, sharing with the delegates the school's fantastic work around KiVa and anti-bullying that has been undertaken in recent years including significant achievements such as their work with the BBC, their Outstanding SIAMS inspection and their recent endorsement for their work around anti-bullying from Stranmillis University.
Lucy Winkler Modeshift STARS AWARD â SILVER!
Our fantastic PTA continues to work tirelessly to help our school and the children. They have organised a Christmas Fayre which follows the Meriden Tree of Thought Dedication on Friday 2nd December â everyone is invited to attend. December will also see the FS1 (Nursery) holding their nativity at St Lawrenceâs Church and this year FS2 (Reception) are having a nativity in school. Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2) will give a Christmas performance on 13th & 14th December, plus there will be Carols and the Christingle service at St. Laurenceâs on the 7th December, always a beautiful service to remind us of the real meaning of Christmas. It is a very busy time but we hope that you can join us. Please contact the office if you would like tickets for any of the performances. I wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year from everyone at Meriden Primary School.
We have also just gained the Silver Award for the School Games Mark! This is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Look out for Gold
We have had such a busy but fantastic start to this school year! The months are whizzing by and lots of things have happened already. We welcomed the start of a new school year with our new head boy, Matthew, and head girl, Hannah. They are such great ambassadors to the school and I know they will do a brilliant job this year. Some of the key events in school life so far this term are shown below.
I am very proud to announce that our school has been accredited with the Modeshift STARS Award. This is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel. The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve the health and well-being of children and young people. We thank our parents and pupils for all their support in this.

Up and Coming Events

Some will spend their Christmas grieving - fighting back tears as they think of family members who arenât with them separated either by circumstance, distance or death. Some will only be able to afford to give to their loved ones the most meagre of gifts. Some will spend their Christmas in cold rooms, eating not a roast dinner, but the warmed-up contents of a couple of tins given by a food bank. Some will spend Christmas surrounded by people, love and laughter yet still feel Italone.seems to me that Christmas has a particular message for all these people. We have our own ideas about having a perfect Christmas â but what is perfection? All those years ago, would Joseph thought it perfect to take the heavily pregnant Mary all the way to Bethlehem? We know that Jesus spent his first days not in a warm well-stocked home, but in the only place his parents could find, a lowly stable. The message is clear: I, God, am amongst you â especially those of you who are Andstruggling.remember
â part of the way God makes his presence a reality to those who are struggling is through our behaviour and our actions. Do you have a neighbour who is lonely or bereaved? Be their friend! Do you know someone who is finding it tough? Be their friend. I want to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a blessed New Year. And for those of you who will find the day of celebration a particular struggle, please remember: God is with you â hopefully the caring actions of others will help you through these times. With blessings,Rev. Lynda Lilley
As the clocks strike midnight to herald the start of Christmas Day, I will be in church leading our Midnight Communion Service. And I guess I will take the opportunity to be the first person to say to the people gathered there ... Happy Christmas. But even as I speak the words, I know it wonât be happy for all of us. Even here in Meriden.

Whilst we have booked the screening dates, we cannot advertise the details of the films to be shown until the screening rights have been granted. Starring Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, the Manhattan good-time girl, the film is beautifully shot in New York accompanied by memorable theme music. We had to make a change of plan in September when the speakers from Concordia Theatre had to postpone their visit- we look forward to seeing them in 2017. We managed to book an alternative speaker but then she had to let us down at the last minute! Fortunately Margret Houldsworth came to our rescue once again with more stories about her life as a diplomatâs wife. This time she told us about her experiences in New York. We are truly grateful to her for filling the gap!

The annual meeting took place on 7th November and we are all very pleased that all the officers and committee members are willing to serve for another year. 2017 will be our 99th! We thank them for all the hard work they have put in throughout the year.
While it hasn't been easy to leave behind all our family and friends in Kent, the welcome and warmth we have received from people since we have been here has been amazing. It has helped us to settle so much more quickly than we would ever have expected to have been able to. In the Bible, Ephesians 3: 20 tells us that 'God does immeasurably more than we can ever ask or imagine', and we have certainly experienced the truth of that in the kindness and love we have received from so many people. We are very grateful to all of you who have made us feel so welcome.
John and Annette Christopher from Albrighton Pottery came to talk about the history and craft of their handthrown pottery. Then we were all given a small piece of clay to mould into a plaque decorated with an initial. Annette then moulded all the plaques together into a large bowl. This was taken away to be fired and will be returned to us later.

In October
As this is my first article for Meriden Mag I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jane and I am married to Andy and in August we moved to Balsall Common. We moved because, as a minister just finishing my training, I was stationed by the Methodist Church to serve three churches in the area, one of which is Meriden. So as Andrew moved to Nottingham, we moved here.
I started in September and now, as I write this it is almost the start of November and my thoughts invariably stray towards Christmas, when I am reminded again that God has done so much more than could ever ask or imagine, in order that we might be reconciled to Him. Jesus the light of the world became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1: 1 - 18). Just as the promise was then that to all who received him he gave the right to become children of God, so that promise remains the same today. As we approach Advent and then Christmas I invite you to come and share in our services and activities as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the greatest gift of all. I look forward to meeting you and may God bless you all in these coming months, Jane Pat Tanner We, the members of the Extend exercise class, were very shocked and saddened by the sudden death, at the end of September, of Pat our Instructor for some 8 years. The classes were started by Age UK but when they withdrew Pat took over the running of them â in addition to several others across the Borough. In her youth she had been a ballet dancer and was also a qualified accountant who ran her own Patbusiness.never hesitated to remind us when she thought we were doing something which was not good for us â and her lasting legacy â should we ever dare to sit with our legs crossed! âwill be that we shall always think of her.

Independent of parties and politics - everyone who works in Parliament, from Government Ministers, through to tour guides and caterers are able to join without audition. Whilst all members pay an annual subscription fee, it is thanks to the financial support we receive from our sponsor BT, that we have continued to grow in numbers and are able to perform regularly with a renowned London youth orchestra.
Nevertheless, while the choir is separate to the business of Parliament â rehearsing late after Mondayâs sittings, it has in fact supported the development of important relationships between the UK and our neighbours. In recent years we have begun to travel around Europe to sing with our political counterparts â most recently with the French Parliament choir in Notre Dame Cathedral, following the Paris terror attacks in November 2015. In December, we will travel to Berlin to join forces with our colleagues in the German Parliament. Together, under the glowing lights of the Bundestag Christmas tree, which stands aloft in the famous Platz der Republik, we will perform a programme of traditional Christmas carols.

A Message from Caroline Spelman MP
for a surgery please
Christmas is a time to celebrate with family and friends, but it is also a time to reflect upon the past year. I am conscious that in the wake of recent political events, the UK must work to forge new relationshipâs overseas and grow as a charitable and outward looking nation. And as we look forward to the New Year, this will be one of the greatest challenges facing our Government and our Parliament.
2017 will be my 20th year serving as MP for Meriden and I would again like to extend my very sincere and heartfelt thanks to all of my constituents; not least following the news that I was to be made a Dame in July. What we have achieved together since 1st May 1997 could not have been possible without the support, faith and trust of our community. I hope that all my constituents have a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

The crucial point here is that Solihull Council is about to release their (consultants) advice on which sites could/should be designated for Housing in Meriden and the wider Borough (as part of the consultation). We will find out the Councilâs view on what the Borough should look like in the short and medium term. Our own Parish Council has commissioned their own consultant to look at these 12 sites and will make those findings (and their position) clear soon as well
From (about) the 30th of November Solihull Council is scheduled to start consulting on their âLocal Plan Reviewâ which will set the scene for thousands of new houses across the Borough- including a review of green belt boundaries and other things. It is really frustrating that the Council is launching this crucial consultation about potential housing sites in the Borough â including our village - during the coldest and darkest months of the year. And residents will only have 8 weeks to respond. This important document will change the Borough and potentially damage not only the rural character of our village and countryside forever, but also could impact on school place availability, surgery appointments, drainage and traffic congestion to name just a few. So this is an issue that affects everyone
To be clear: I am (a) not a Planning Consultant (b) have no financial interest in promoting any of the sites and (c) am not part of the Council âmachineryâ. I am simply a local resident who is passionate about our village â and its green belt - and want you to know whatâs going on and how you can make a difference through a strong local voice. I am supported by other residents who feel the same way
HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN MERIDENâS GREEN BELT? URGENT NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING
Do you agree with the Parish Council statement that: âIt is inevitable that Meriden will face the prospect of accommodating more housing over the next 10-15 years. MPC cannot prevent this nor can the villagers but we can lobby SMBC and influence where development should be located, based on public opinionâ (MPC website)
Do you favour âorganicâ growth to reflect our own needs or âmass housingâ?
1/ What Solihull Council (and their consultants) are proposing as soon as possible. This will be new information â also available on SMBC website
In a nutshell, Solihull need new housing for its own population growth and also has a legal duty to help e.g. Birmingham out too (because Birmingham doesnât have enough space to keep up with its own development needs) resulting in some say, 8000 new houses for Solihull!
David McGrath, Innellan House, Eaves Green Lane, Meriden ON: Wednesday the 7th of December 2016 at Heart of England social Club Berkswell Rd, Meriden 7- 8pm
In response to Solihull Councilâs âCall For Sitesâ (earlier this year) landowners have put forward 245 sites to be considered for development around the Borough. In many cases this is land currently protected by âgreen beltâ status.
It is also clear that any eventual applications for development will still have to go through the formal planning process (including possible Appeals). But whether these sites are in newly designated areas for development (e.g. formerly green belt) will make a crucial difference to their success in the planning process. So we need to have our say quickly and Finalpersuasivelythought.
So you need to know:
I have been encouraged therefore to follow up these Meriden Mag articles by Chairing/ facilitating a public meeting to share with you factual and independent information so that you can answer the three questions (above) for yourself âand decide what action you want to take This will be on: Wednesday 7th of December 2016 at Heart of England Social Club 7- 8.pm This will be a meeting to update you on the Councilâs consultation and your options on how best to respond. Prospective developers and local Councillors are welcome too. The focus will be on Meriden
There are those perhaps who would like us to sleep walk through this process â in the dark winter monthsonly to wake up one morning and find that we have a different village. Itâs time for you to have your say! See you at the meeting
By David McGrath former Chairman of Meriden Residents Against Inappropriate Development (RAID)
Are you prepared to support further new housing development in Meriden at one, more or none of the sites? Remember Solihull Council has 245 to choose from and Meriden has already provided new housing at Maxstoke Lane and Leys Lane
12 of these sites are in Meriden
2/ What this means for the 12 sites in Meriden and the potential impact on our village 3/ How you can be influential in this process â either by objecting to green belt development locally (or by supporting particular sites). At the same time, ensuring that you respond by the end of January 2017

For our October meeting Ken Sherlock returned, this time to give us a presentation on his holiday trekking in Nepal in 2012. There were some wonderful photographs of temples and buildings which unfortunately are no longer there since the recent earthquake in the region. The party trekked for seven days and travelled along the main route to the base camp at Everest. Sherpas carried their luggage and we saw pictures of peasant farming and the Buddhist culture of prayer rocks, prayer wheels and juniper burning stoves to assist prayers to rise to heaven. You are expected to spin the prayer wheels as you pass. The accommodation every night was basic but comfortable although extremely cold and there was no water in the evening. They ate freshly cooked local vegetables which were very tasty and not too spicy. As everyone has to walk the same route and cross the two rivers by suspension bridges they are very crowded and people have to constantly give way to heavily laden donkeys and oxen as they pass. There were fantastic pictures of the landscape, including Everest, and people at work etc. It was an extremely interesting and informative talk but not a holiday many of us could imagine doing ourselves! forward to more

In August Margaret Houldsworth spoke to us about her life as a wife in the Diplomatic Service. She joined the Civil Service and described her job working as a clerical officer in the library opposite No 10 Downing Street. After she married Brian they were posted overseas. The first posting was to northern Nigeria which she found dry and hot. They then moved to East Africa which was damper with incredible wild life. After two years they moved to New York. Margaret thoroughly enjoyed her five years in America with her husband and three children and told us it was the people there who had made it such a joyful experience. They lived by the beach on Long Island Sound and she described her life there with lovely neighbours. She remembered Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Pantomimes, sledging and massive Easter egg hunts in particular. They then returned to England for a home posting.
In August Karen Gaymond, a voluntary speaker for The Childrenâs Society, spoke to us about this charity which was set up by Edward Rudolph in the late nineteenth century. He was a Sunday school teacher and when two young boys failed to turn up for his Sunday school he went to look for them and was shocked to find them begging for food on the street. As this was not an isolated experience Rudolph was moved to act. He approached Archbishop Tait to express his concern for children living on the margin of society and suggested that the Church of England should be at the fore front of social action for such children. The Archbishop agreed enthusiastically and, soon after, the Church of England Central Home for Waifs and Strays was established in London in 1881 to give poor, homeless children a loving and secure family environment. More Homes were opened until there were 80 of them. It was then decided to change focus towards helping young people solve their own problems so the Homes were sold. Today The Society works with damaged children referred to them as a last resort by Social Services when they feel unable to help them. The Society also campaigns for social justice and because of its connection with the Church of England they are commissioned to write reports for the Government. Other projects involve working with runaway children, helping people to get out of the debt trap with pay day loan companies, providing food parcels and emotional help to families, supporting young carers and running drop-in centres. Although over the years the work of the childrenâs Society has changed their child-centred values and intentions remain the same.

Obedience is to do with love and trust, and how much faith you have in the person who's asking you to do something. Generally if we love someone we trust them and their opinion, so depending on how much we love and trust them will depend on how far we are willing to go for them in obedience to their request. A good example of this is demonstrated by Jesus in the bible. Mark 14:32-36; 'They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, âSit here while I pray.â He took Peter, James and John along with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and troubled. âMy soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,â He said to them. âStay here and keep watch.â Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. âAbba, Father,â He said,âeverything is possible for You. Take this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but what You will.â Because of His love for the Father, Jesus obeyed Him all the way to the cross. Which demonstrated His love for us too. ''But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.'' (Romans 5:8). Jesus died so His enemies could be forgiven, something Jonah couldn't come to terms with. This year we have seen the horrors of the war in Syria, with the mindless bombings of hospitals and aid convoys. Around the rest of the world we've had the terrorist bombings, shooting of children and young people in schools across America and the loss of life at sea as desperate people flee war torn countries in the hope of a safer future, only to be met with more hostility. In the newspapers and on the TV we hear about the depravity of this world and it's people. But there is 'good news' - We can make a difference. So why don't we make a choice today to show God's love to one another? In Mark 12:31 Jesus reminded us of the command to love our neighbour as our self. And in Luke 6:27-36, Jesus goes one step further and tells us to love our enemies. If we did that we really could start to change the world. And we don't have to do this under our own strength, Jesus promised us a Helper. In John 14:15-17 Jesus says âIf you love Me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you foreverâthe Spirit of truth.'' So let's not think about it, let's make a decision to do it, to put others before ourselves and see what transformation we can effect in other people's lives, the area where we live and who knows maybe even in our own lives, as we start to love one another in 2017. I leave you with this thought â 'Jesus loves those, who love those, who Jesus loves.' âWho are they? Read John 3:16. We wish you all a Blessed Christmas and New Year. âPeace be with you.â
Kevin and Lyn Hunt. MCF- Life Church, 113, Main Road, Meriden. Balsall Common U3A
We recently did a school assembly at Meriden Primary School on Jonah, which was great fun for us to do and brought much laughter from the children and teachers, especially when I was completely swallowed up by the big fish we had designed and then spat out again. Our family service which we have on the first Sunday of the month was that week so we decided it would be a good idea to do it there also. But with a lot less space and some different participants including the children, it was even funnier. However, despite all the frivolity the story of Jonah had a serious side to it which isn't about Nineveh or the big fish, but about obedience. The people of Nineveh were enemies of Israel and had done some horrific things to them, so it's no wonder Jonah didn't want to go there, especially as he knew that if the people of Nineveh repented then God would forgive them. But regardless of what Jonah thought God was testing him to see if He could trust Jonah to obey Him even if he didn't agree with or want to do what God was asking of him.

Solihull MBC will collect real Christmas trees until Friday 13 January 2017. Trees can be presented alongside your black wheelie bin or purple sacks. There should be: No pots: No soil: No decorations: No trees more than 6ft: No thick stumps
As I say every year, by the time you read this The Tree should be on The Green. The plan is for it to be installed mid-November. Yet again, Adam's Tree Surgery of Dorridge will be erecting The Tree and fitting the lights. It should be noted that they do this with no charge. The Tree is paid for from kind donations and is grown at and is specially selected by Wood's Farm of Shirley.
A big, big thank you to everyone who donated to and supported the Firebird Singers' Macmillan Coffee Morning on Saturday 1st October. We raised a whopping ÂŁ636.00 (plus Gift Aid) for Macmillan Cancer Support and will certainly be back again next year to support this fantastic cause!!

Juniors at Meriden Archery Club took the opportunity to tempt parents and members by holding a MacMillan coffee morning during one of their Saturday morning sessions. A grand total of ÂŁ71.47 was raised - not a bad morning's shooting! A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event."
A Thank you message from the Firebird Singers
Trees can also be recycled at Bickenhill Household Waste Recycling Centre
At the time of writing (27th October) I have received extremely generous donations from The Earl and Countess of Aylesford, De Mulder Enterprises, Pertemps, To Book, The Cassidy Group, Fordes on The Green and John Williamson (Kleeneze). It is a legal requirement for me to have the Tree Lighting system PAT Tested each year. For this, I thank Steve Gilks (Derron Electrical), who obliges with this task on a purely voluntary basis as he will do with the installation of the electrics for The DEDICATION of THE TREE on FRIDAY 2nd DECEMBER, As ever, this will be at 4 pm on The Green. The Rev Lynda Lilley has agreed to conduct proceedings and Carol Todd will be accompanying on keyboard (For the Twelfth TIME!!!). The Manor Hotel will be providing Mulled Wine and Hot Chocolate, as they did last year, with their takings being donated to Meriden Tree of Thought. Do, please, come along and support the children of Meriden School and enjoy a very pleasant occasion. This year's charity Christmas Cards are on sale at, and thanks to, Meriden Tearooms, Lloyd's Chemist and The Spar Shop. I do hope you will really like the lovely picture on The Cards. It is from a painting by Julie Hyde (Centre of England Arts) who gave me permission to use it. As you all know by now, the proceeds from The Tree will be shared between The Marie Curie Hospice, Solihull (Charity Number 207994) and Macmillan Cancer Support (Charity Number 261017). There will, again be the area at the base of The Tree for your Symbols of Thought. I am delighted that so many of you appreciate this as a space to mark an identifiable memory of a loved one or friend. The Forms will be available from Spar, Lloyd's and The Tearooms. PLEASE BELIEVE ME when I say that I take nothing and no one for granted. I never cease to marvel at the level of caring support I receive for my efforts with The Meriden Tree of Thought.

A further amendment seeks local control of the physical appearance of the bridges and structures. So far, the Independent Design Panel hasn't inspired confidence that designs will be adapted to local styles. Bridges don't have to be bare concrete. The concern is that Solihull will be avalanched with planning applications, and won't take account of consultations.
From Richard Lloyd Chairman Heart of England High Speed Railway Action Group (www.hhag.org.uk)
Other measures would enable construction traffic to be banned from selected areas. It's clear the road network can't take hundreds of extra HGVs a day, but there are extra costs involved in directing them along the line-of-route. As it stands, Solihull MBC have the ultimate say, so this amendment would take the pressure off them.
On the other hand, the response from government, HS2 Ltd, and Solihull Council has largely been fine words, and as Captain Mainwaring said, fine words butter no parsnips!
There are already powers available to a local authority, like Solihull, that could be used to control many of the nuisances from construction and operation of HS2, but getting them to use those powers could be difficult and costly. Consequently, we are grateful to Caroline Spelman for tabling a batch of amendments to the HS2 Bill, which would be so helpful to the area if adoptedeven at this late stage. One, for instance, requires the line to be put in a tunnel.
Back in 2009, it was assumed the third railway to Birmingham would start at St Pancras and follow one of the two existing lines. It's been an extraordinary feat to disconnect the scheme from most useful destinations, to base all decisions on the need for speed while denying it was important, and to choose a straight route that no-one ever wanted to follow before. Though it may be putting lippy on a pig, inserting protective clauses into the HS2 Bill will reduce the difficulties later, and we should be pointing this out to our elected representatives. But officialdom will still say "now is not the time".
That's not to say that none of the wanted mitigation will happen, it's simply that HS2 Ltd isn't the sort of organisation capable of resolving difficult technical issues. Its focus has been marketing the scheme to Parliament, and that's how most of the first billion pounds was spent. Which is why it's so important to keep pushing for improvements, both in the final Parliamentary stages, and, if HS2 were to go ahead, during the design and build phases.
Officialdom likes to leave the big decisions as long as possible, and the HS2 saga is proof of that. HHAG has worked for over 6 years to gather details of problems across the Borough, and then coordinate action.
Another asks for a statutory limit on noise - not unlike the limitations applied to road vehicles and aircraft. With less than 2 minutes between trains, enforceable limits are particularly important where the line would be on an embankment or viaduct, because the noise fences offered by HS2 Ltd come with no guarantees.
The good news is that everything has been put on the record, with evidence and workaround proposals.
HS2 would be the largest construction project ever carried out in the country, to which can be added related projects like the Garden City around the Bickenhill Station. Proper controls are essential. HS2 Ltd claims a 24-hour help line will be sufficient to manage problems, but local authorities fear they will bear the brunt of complaints. The missing element is local involvement to catch problems before they become major - whether that's environmental nuisance, or threats to the ecology and heritage assets.

Beaver Scouts
We have also kept a diary on our favourite sports and created a scrap book to put our physical activity photos and diary entries in. We have also had two very interesting talks - one about learning disabilities and one on keeping healthy. Six of the Beavers also camped out at Rough Close for the weekend alongside Meriden Scouts and Cubs, and the theme for the weekend was spy training, where each of the Beavers had their own spy names and completed a number of activities in order to graduate to become fully fledged spies. They also went on a 3 mile hike and went searching for glow sticks in the woods in the dark with the Cubs and Scouts. The weekend really was so much fun!!

The timetable leading up to Christmas promises to be very busy with a dodgeball competition raising money for the British Heart Foundation at the Scout Hut, Remembrance Day Service, and the annual Christmas party!
December sees us conclude our Cub 100 activities by hosting the Atherstone District Cub Promise Renewal on December 16th at 19:16 hours on The Green. This is a combined activity across the whole world and will see Cubs all renew their Promise at the same time. We will have Cubs from across the District renewing theirs on The Green. Please come along and support the Cubs.
Scouts
The Cubs have been working hard on their Athletics Badge, where they have been learning about how to warm up and down properly; how exercise affects the body and its organs and different types of sports and activities (we even played Crab Football â who remembers that from school?). They have also been working towards their International Badge, where they were given different countries to research (USA, China, Spain, Italy, and Greece) and looked at their cultures, ceremonies and food, as well as learning to count to 10 in their countries language. They cooked a traditional dish from each of their countries too â and a very tasty job they did too. We also finished the term by having our annual Pumpkin Carving competition, which is always great fun!

Since the start of term in September we have said goodbye to four Beavers as three of them moved on to Cubs and welcomed another four new Beavers. We have been working on our sports badge, showing each other our favourite sports and telling each other the rules of them.
The team is now Becky (Beaver Leader), assisted by Lisa and Michelle.
âIâm Kaitlyn - On the 9th to the 11th of September 2016, we had a collective Meriden group camp which involved Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. When we got to Rough Close campsite we had to put our tents up and collect firewood for the next day. In the morning we had to cook on an open fire which took ages! After that we got our bags ready for the day hike with the Cubs while the Beavers practiced being secret agents. On our hike we had lunch and had fun. On the evening we played games in the woods and had a big group campfire where we sang lots of songs. On the Sunday we had to put our tents down and we played more games. Then we went off in groups and did den building, ours was obviously the best! Then after that our parents came and we went home. I had a great weekend and can't wait for the next one.â
âMy name is George - I attended the Bald Eagle Scout Camp from 7th-9th October. We had a fun packed weekend by completing 1 day and 2 night hikes and during one night hike we had to put our hands in a box to feel and guess what objects we inside. The hikes were fun but very tiring. On the Saturday we took part in lots of bases including paper airplane making, fish a duck and kite flying. During the Saturday night hike we took part in more bases such as Nerf Gun shooting, playing with remote control cars and Bomb Defusing. On a Sunday we had an award ceremony where 1st Meriden Scouts won a trophy and 2 certificates. We had a great weekend and can't wait to do it all over again next year.â For details of what weâve been doing and we have planned please visit our blog site at http://1stmeridenscouts.blogspot.co.uk and if you think Scoutingâs for you get in touch. The start of a new Scout Term and weâre keeping the programme packed full of a wide range of activities and badges. Weâve done plenty of badge work, visited the West Midlands Police dog training centre and have had two camps already. One group camp at Rough Close and a return to the Bald Eagle camp for even more success than last year, though the lions in the neighbouring Safari park kept waking me up at silly oâclock in the morning. Another fact we found out was the police dogs can bite victims, only if they try to attack. After that we all went outside and watched Ross hide a tennis ball and get a dog to come and sniff it out. Then he bought out and older dog who had been in the force for longer; there were some volunteers from the scout troop who volunteered to either have a tennis ball in their pocket and stand in a line or just stand in a line. Once done, the police officer let the dog go to sniff us and whoever had the tennis ball the dog lay next to and cried. We enjoyed visiting the police dog centre! All of us agreed we at least learnt 1 thing from going there! We would all like the thank the police for letting us visit and learn about police dogsâ
On Tuesday 6th September we all were invited to learn about and see the dogs at Balsall Common police dog centre. A kind man named Ross came and greeted us in. Once in the building we found out they train with real drugs and money (all securely sealed).

Quality of life is also important and we know we face a number of challenges locally in 2017 and beyond. As one of your 3 local SMBC councillors, and as a local resident, I am acutely aware of how important it will be to manage effectively the impact of the construction of HS2 and the development of more houses. We also need to ensure that the soon-to-be-built green waste recycling facility in Meriden will operate as promised by the owners and not cause any inconvenience to local residents. Yes, we face challenging times ahead, both locally and nationally, but by working together we can overcome these and move forwards to a happier and more prosperous future.

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the death, in November of Dr Peter Lea. Many of us are very grateful to have had him as our family doctor. Our sympathy goes to Peterâs family.
I know that the country is divided, indeed Meriden is divided, between those who voted for Brexit and those who voted to âremainâ, but we have to pull together now to work for a better future for the UK. I would like Britain still to play a major role in Europe we can make a significant contribution to the prosperity and security of Europe, working closely with our European partners to tackle climate change, energy security, migration, etc, but we can also use our influence and connections on a global scale. Britain has a very strong position because of its historic links with Commonwealth countries: India is an emerging superpower and Canada and Australia and others are important trading partners. Britainâs future role in the world is important to all of us. We need to be a prosperous nation so that we can pay for excellent health and social services. Good financial management is also key to maintaining the level of services that we currently enjoy and I think that we are lucky in Solihull that we have been able to do this despite the difficult financial period we have lived through over the last 8 years.
A Message from Councillor Tony Dicicco
As we come to the end of a year, it is natural to look back and review the major events that have happened. It is fair to say that 2016 has been a momentous year: the UK voted to leave the EU, we lost a prime minister and gained a new one, and the violence in Syria and Iraq reached new levels. We are living through challenging times and this can be very unsettling. The immediate aftermath of the vote to leave the EU has not seen the economic and social catastrophe that some predicted, but it is clear that some months (years) of uncertainty remain.
Lea
When I was delivering leaflets and canvassing in Meriden in April and early May prior to the council elections, I spoke to many residents about local issues but also about the looming EU referendum. It was clear that many people were disillusioned with the EU and were concerned about the amount of power and decision-making that the UK had ceded to Brussels. I understood, and indeed shared some of these concerns. However, I was still pretty shocked by the referendum result: Iâd expected a tight contest but with a slight majority in favour of remaining in the EU. I think what shocked me most was the strength of the âNoâ vote in the industrial heartlands of the Midlands and the North of England and in South Wales.
Thank you once again for re-electing me last May. If you wish to contact me, my email address is: tony.dicicco@solihull.gov.uk. you Dr Peter

After Christmas many of you will be throwing the packaging from high value electrical goods out with the rubbish. Remember to wrap your rubbish and avoid advertising what youâve got to potential thieves.
I appreciate that some of you may already be looking forward to Boxing Day when you can finally put your feet up. Recent weeks have probably been dominated by visits to shops packed out with festive paraphernalia, heard Christmas songs on the radio and stood in queues waiting to buy gifts for friends and family.
Last year you probably vowed to be more organised â but there may well be some of you who still have a list full of things to buy and people to see. So whatever you have planned over the coming weeks, please remember to follow our simple crime prevention advice. Before heading to the shops next, please make sure your home is secure. Christmas can be a lucrative time for burglars. They know that there will be countless valuable items literally on display for them if they manage to get into a home.
If you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, or there is an issue concerning your familyâs safety then please all officers on 101, or 999 if a crime is in progress.
We really canât write a message for December without a festive focus and the gift of advice on how you can make your Christmas a crime-free one.
To the majority of you these tips may seem really simple, but theyâre easy to forget if youâre in a rush! And opportunist criminals will have no hesitation or regard as they ruin you and your familyâs celebrations.

Although winter feeding benefits birds most, food shortages can occur at any time of the year. By feeding the birds year round, youâll give them a better chance to survive the periods of food shortage whenever they may occur. At this time of year, put out food and water on a regular basis. In severe weather, feed twice daily if you can: in the morning and in the early Birdsafternoon.require high energy (high fat) foods during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosty nights. Use only good quality food and scraps. Always adjust the quantity given to the demand, and never allow uneaten foods to accumulate around the feeders. Once you establish a feeding routine, try not to change it as the birds will become used to it and time their visits to your garden accordingly.
Donât forget to put water out for the birds especially when it is freezing and make sure you crack the ice if necessary

For many of us itâs difficult to socialise in the evening, we may need babysitters or just be too tired to venture out. That is why the Adult Craft Exchange was conceived: to give us a chance to meet like-minded, creative, easy going people who want a chance to chat and do their favourite hobby. There is no teacher, just enthusiasts. So if you are dying to learn crochet or knitting, one of us can show you and maybe you have a hobby you can share. Small children are welcome too and if you just want to chat you can always pop in.

Itâs a sad entry from me this quarter. The end of the year means the end of an era. I shall hang up my recipe bloggerâs hat at the end of 2016 and let someone else have a chance, I have hogged this page for far too long I fear. Maybe they will let me come back for an occasional flex of my literary muscle from time to time! I have had a lovely five years or so. I have always enjoyed writing this column, and thank you so much if you have ever read and especially if you have ever made any of the recipes I have provided. You can of course still find pictures of my latest work on my facebook page âJuci Luciâs Cupcake Factoryâ, where I photo almost all the cakes that come out of my kitchen.
I shall leave you with what I consider the best recipe for baking iced cookies with the kids this Christmas break. In fact, pop these in a little cellophane pouch and hand tie with a red ribbon, and you have absolutely wonderful gifts, made with love and tasting like heaven. Making them with a sugarpaste top is very effective and not nearly as tricky, messy or difficult as using the more traditional method of icing. Itâs fun too. May I wish all the good people of Meriden a fulfilling, happy and prosperous 2017.

âIt is recommended that the traffic conditions observed in Fillongley Road do not justify the provision of a formal pedestrian crossing on Fillongley Road, near Main Road. It is further recommended that to help manage service demand the situation on Fillongley Road should not be reviewed again for at least 3 years, unless there is a material change in traffic conditions in the area.â

82 Bus Service
Cllr Dicicco advised that the matter had been discussed at Cabinet and Meriden was one site of 6/7 identified being assessed for suitability. The site proposed by HS2 Limited (HS2L) is to the south of the A45 and in principle identified as a probability due to the fact that HS2L will be funding the site relocation construction works. Any alternative site identified by SMBC is not in their interest to take forward as SMBC would have to fund relocation.
A further consultation event was held in October with Messrs Harding and Stirling and twenty four residents attended who represented the wider disabled community who were unable to attend due to transport and mobility issues. The new 89 service commenced on 5th September and after a month of transition, user opinions had not changed in terms of meeting the need of disabled, vulnerable and senior residents. Meriden Parish Council has therefore challenged Transport for West Midlands decision to remove the taxi-bus service under the Equality Act 2010 and challenged the reasoning behind Meridenâs exclusion from the Ring and Ride service. The Clerk will be contacting the Equality Commission to ask for their assistance in getting an answer from Transport for West Midlands.
From 4th December 2016 the 900 becomes the X1.
Taxi Bus and 89 replacement service update
HS2L pursued options to relocate the HWRC and added a provision to the Hybrid Bill to relocate the site approx. 200300m east of the existing facility, immediately south of the A45. SMBC considered this site will deliver on all criteria, including impact on journey times, and it is the site being pursued by HS2L. Any alternative relocation site proposals will need to go before SMBC planning committee meaning that public consultation, and prior engagement, would apply. There is good access to the A45 site via the established feeder/service road. SMBCâs HS2 Implementation Advisory Group continues to review the alternative sites.
900 Bus Service
We received complaints during August that without consultation and any notice period for taxi-bus users the service was to cease on 3rd September 2016 to be replaced by the 89 bus service operated by IGO. An invitation was extended to Mr Andrew Harding, Transport for West Midlands, together with Mr David Stirling of IGO, to provide an explanation for the cessation of the taxi-bus service which has served our vulnerable and disabled residents in the rural community of Meriden since 1999. The reason given for removal of the taxi-bus service is that it is no longer viable. Forty two residents who regularly use the taxi-bus attended the meeting all of whom talked about the loss of their lifeline, independence, social isolation, clubs and friendship groups that they can no longer access. The replacement 89 service does not meet their need given it cannot provide a door to door pick up due to accessibility, timetable, and zone routing.
The Parish Council has met with SMBC and an external consultant for the purpose of long term planning a programme of maintenance and remedial works of Meriden Pool; the Pool is a much valued community asset and historical feature of Meridenâs rural landscape. Red Kite Consultants have been engaged to provide a management programme. The Parish Council is working in partnership with SMBC and will apply for environmental funding to improve the Pool including design, water quality, levels and accessibility; carry out maintenance and protect its future as a site of historical interest. For any residents interested in supporting the Parish Council with this project or have historical documentation regarding drainage, water flow, pipe network or other information, please contact the Clerk.

Parish council representatives met with Caroline Spelman MP on 10th September 2016 to highlight their concerns and the impact on Meriden should the re-siting of the Bickenhill Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) be relocated to the quarry site known as Area G, Meriden. Parish council representatives had also attended the House of Lords Select Committee to petition for mitigation against HS2 construction impact and relocation of Bickenhill Household Waste Recycling Centre to Meriden. A subsequent meeting was held in October with Meriden Ward Councillors and SMBCâs lead advisor on HS2 Walter Bailey to discuss the matter further.
We recently wrote to Diamond Buses and Transport for West Midlands to share the results of our survey with 82 bus users which we conducted face to face at local bus stops, businesses and homes. The majority of responses came from residents who were either unemployed, retired and/or pensioners, some of whom have disabilities. The most concerning results were the number of times the 82 passengers had been waiting for over an hour for their bus to arrive and the fact that several people, including those with disabilities, had to stand on their bus journey. This clearly shows there is a frequency and capacity issue. Although half of the respondents believed the service to be unreliable, the majority thought the frequency of buses should be increased. The purpose of our letter and its supporting data highlights the need for improved transport links between the residents of Meriden and Millisonâs Wood with the surrounding areas. Thanks to all residents who completed the 82 bus survey. You can view the results of the survey at Meriden Library.

unit Alice Paddock 1st July 1919 â 25th September 2016 John Paddock 6th April 1945 - 27th September 2016
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Alice, 97, and her son John, 71, who passed 18 hours later in Australia. John had liver cancer and the news broke Alice's heart. She had lived in Meriden for almost 70 years, working at The Triumph and later as an assistant at the village chemist. She loved her garden and was a longtime supporter of the mobile library.
âThe Bluebell Wood" One day I wandered through a wood Parting branches where I stood There before my startled gaze Bluebells! In a misty haze Blue as the sky of heaven above Blue as the eyes of my dear love Spreading like a Grecian sea As far as any eye could see
John grew up in Meriden, spending his childhood playing in Millions Wood. He also worked alongside his parents at The Triumph, before travelling to New Zealand at the age of 21, meeting his wife on the way. He lived in Melbourne but returned to Meriden often to visit his parents and friends. We would like to thank everyone in the community who supported Alice during her later years and the family during this difficult time. Here is one of Aliceâs favourite poems:

First Class Ticket Grace Theay, Head of Sixth Form for this year offers her vision for our Post 16 offer to students.
As the Head of Post 16 for this academic year I am passionate about creating well-rounded students who are prepared for their future beyond the gates of Heart of England School. I like to think of our Sixth Form as a first class train to the future. We provide students with the ticket to get to their destination. That destination maybe University, an Apprenticeship or work. Our first class train carriage is packed with teachers who care; teachers who are not only experts in their subjects but experts in delivering their subjects to a high level that produces excellent results. We provide pastoral care of the highest quality with tutors who get to know students individually and who are involved and nurture their interests outside of lessons. We teach in first class accommodation surrounded by first class students.
Firstly the 59 year old floor has been stripped back and restored to nearly new. The outdated and damaged wood around the stage has been re-clad and painted and now features our logo and school values for all to see.
Sixth Form Area
Nick spoke about having a plan in life and the importance of finding something you want to do, sticking with it and getting better at it. âFind something youâre good at and stick to it,â he advised. His long-standing career is testament to his determination and he has picked up many awards and wins along the way. From way back in 1980 when he first won team Olympic Silver to his recent Gold he is still working hard. Only last weekend he was awarded âEquestrian of the Yearâ at the Horse of the Year show. The Gold Medal winner was generous in answering many questions from our students put to him by Vice-Principal Gethyn Bennett and later those asked directly by the audience. These ranged from what it was like in Rio to his experiences in competing in seven Olympic Games and how his amazing horse Big Star got his name. âHe had the name when we bought him, but it fits because he really is a star, an extraordinary talent.â
News from the Heart of England School Students Return to Upgraded Facilities
Talking about his recovery and getting back into the saddle the Olympian said: âAfter the accident I didnât really think, âI canât do it.â Eventually you feel fine but I gave it time.â For 18 months Nick said he didnât know what to do but that he just built up from where he was until he could get back on a horse; although it did not all go smoothly. âThe first time I got on I fell off!â he said.
After meeting the Principal Jacqueline Hughes-Williams, Nick was shown into the hall and was met by an enthusiastic and loud welcome from our Year 11 students.
Olympic Champion at Heart of England
The newly painted and repaired walls have large format artworks which reflect activities in the hall. All the artwork and walls are lit with new architectural lighting which is easy to use and can be changed to match the mood of the hall setting. New light-proof blinds enhance the lighting and improve the projector image on the screen. A special lighting gantry has been installed too. A new, versatile and easy to use sound system has been installed too so that itâs all âplug-and-playâ.
Nick is an inspiring figure for young and old alike. He is the oldest Brit in a century to win Olympic Gold and he is the first British rider to have won gold in the event for 44 years. If that isnât enough Nick also suffered a near-fatal broken neck 16 years ago and had to wear a cumbersome neck brace bolted to his skull for many months.
Franklin D Roosevelt once said: âWe cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.â At Heart of England Sixth Form, that is exactly what we are about. We see ourselves as a Sixth Form that helps to create and shape futures for our students.
Major parts of the Sixth Form area have also been refurbished. The old common room has gone and been replaced by more comfortable seating in the foyer area. A new exclusive catering area has been created on the bridge and further eating areas provided in the foyer. Mrs Theay now has a brand new classroom which overlooks the garden and her old room has been opened up to create an extended, quiet study area.
The largest project was the hall. Itâs a large, multifunctional room in the oldest part of the building so there were challenges and problems to solve. Our objective was to create a welcoming and functional space which would be flexible and last. âWe were aware that most visitors to school come here first and this is where most parents get their view of the school,â said Anne Lycett, Chair of Governors.
All the refurbishments have been met with the all-important student approval! Many have commented on how pleasant both the hall and the Sixth Form areas are.
Principal Jacqueline Hughes-Williams said âWe were thrilled to have Nick visit us today; our students were given an insight into the hard work it takes to be truly successful.â

Joshua is Autistic and taking part in archery has helped him enormously, He has become much more confident and independent and archery allows him to focus his energy on his aim and ambition which is to get to the Olympics in Joshua2024. is extremely dedicated and passionate about archery and trains for almost 30 hours a week either in the gym, shooting at the Meriden Archery Club or at the Lilleshall Archeryacademy.GB have recommended to get assistance for funding and grants to cover the costs for equipment and coaching, Joshua would be happy to receive any grants, sponsorship or funding that can be offered as everything helps towards his goal of becoming an Olympic Archer like his heroes Naomi Folkard and Patrick Huston.
Joshua also had great success at the Archery GB Youth Festival and was part of the Team Gold medal winners.

LITTLE ANGELS PARENT AND TODDLER GROUP
Meridenâs Enclosure Act, 1785 created a few entirely new roads, one of the most significant being the Straight Mile (Hampton Lane) originally a country mile long replacing an earlier route to Hampton that began as Whittels Lane behind âLanesfieldâ next to Shirleyâs
One of the oldest village documents in Latin dated to about 1200 outlines the boundaries of Alspath Hall and incidentally gives us the name of a lost road that ran from the top of the Hill towards the parish church: St Edmundâs Way. The church must then have been dedicated to this famous Anglo-Saxon saint. Like many roads, it eventually became a footpath when the village centre was no longer at Alspath on top of the Hill. An entry in the âPlace Names of Warwickshireâ 1936 suggests âShowellâ (as in the Lane) means a scarecrow but I believe it is more mundane. Near the hill top was Wymulne Green a superlative spot for a windmill grinding corn. The Showell family Coventry bakers had property in nearby Allesley and may have leased the mill here. Another road from the original village centre ran diagonally across the fields to join the main road near the Village hall. Dr Kittermaster drew it and another lane to Berkswell in use in 1830s. Both became redundant but when? The opposite happened elsewhere. Leys Lane was just a footpath across the Open Field called the âHayne â. By 1795 it was upgraded and though narrow, a throughway to Fillongley Lane (Road) making a cross roads with a now vanished lane leading to a farm near the by-pass. At Lodge Green the lane to Holly Lodge and High Ash Farm was wide enough for horses and carts to use heading for Gt Packington. Travellers from the village to Berkswell and beyond passed so close to Meriden Hall they could look through its windows. The modern Berkswell Road dates from c 1795. The sharp bend near Highbury Bank indicates its original way into the Hall grounds.
Please come along and join in the Fun and Activities with other children aged 0 to 5 years, term time only. Our Sessions are: Wednesday and Friday 9.30am - 11.30am Meriden Sports Pavilion (Next to the Park) Thursday 9.30am - 11.30am Jubilee Community Centre (Balsall Common) Admission is ÂŁ3.50 for 1 Adult & 1 Child + 50p for Additional Child Includes a drink and toast. Call Rachel Platt 07812 127772 for more information. Garage then meandered across the Heath. Old field names on the 1795 map tell us where. In recent times even this footpath has vanished under the gravel workings. Crossing Cornets End Lane it joined the Kenilworth Road opposite Patrickâs Farm by the Hardisrow Meadow. The Enclosure Act recorded the exact track (route) to be taken, how wide every by way should be and the type of road planned including even if it were just a bridleway or a foot path.
Doreen Agutter. The start/ end of St Edmund's Way is to the right of Moat House farm. If you go on foot you can see a small dip in the land by the side of the building. It became a foot path ending opposite Showell Lane.

Those of us who thought, right up until Election Day, that despite inevitable setbacks we were still on a gradual, upward path toward a more inclusive society â toward more opportunities for more people, toward more openmindedness and acceptance of differences, toward better treatment of minorities and women â have apparently been misreading history. This is, after all, the guy who thinks of Mexicans and Muslims as enemies, who mocks the disabled, who disrespects women, who encouraged violence at his political rallies and said heâd like to curtail freedom of the press.

That said, here goes: It may not be the end of the world, but it sure feels like it. Weâve just made the wrong person president, and now Iâm trying, without much success, to get my mind around that fact and to put on a happy face. So far, itâs not Afterworking.the weirdest, most exhausting U.S. presidential campaign in living memory, many of us were prepared to say, âHalleluiah! Itâs over!â and settle down to four or eight years of Hillary Clinton. She may not be the president many of us wanted, but at least she has ideas, plans, and knows how government works. Instead, weâre getting Donald Trump, who seems to have no sensible ideas at all, no experience beyond a lifetime of building a highly leveraged real estate empire that has at times been on the brink of disaster as a direct result of bad decisions made under the influence of his fragile ego, and few plans beyond building a âbig, beautiful wallâ on the Weborder.wereprepared for Mrs. Clinton, with all her faults and shortcomings, all her emails and other baggage, but also all her experience at the State Department, in the Senate and in the White House.
Those of us who thought, right up until Election Day, that this couldnât possibly happen â that surely the American electorate would see through Mr. Trumpâs bluster and name-calling and face-making and midnight tweeting and wild promises to bring back manufacturing and bring back steel and bring back jobs that had long since emigrated offshore (that is, to bring back the good old days), and to replace Obamacare with something better, and to reverse economic trends that have been developing for half a century (without ever explaining how he would accomplish any of those miracles) â have apparently been sorely misreading the public mood.
Instead, weâre getting Mr. Trump, whose main qualification for the job of guiding a republic of 324 million souls, and the worldâs leading economy, and the worldâs most powerful military seems to be a blithe ignorance of how any of it works.
Reach Glenn Richter at grichter@record-journal.com.
But I prefer to believe that Mr. Trumpâs victory is due primarily to millions of people feeling that theyâve been left behind by the economy, by technology, by various elites, by modernity itself. Otherwise, Iâd have to conclude that the millions of Americans who voted for Mr. Trump are as xenophobic, socially backward, mean and nasty as he Willis. he grow into the job? Will he rise to the awesome responsibility of the presidency, the way a one-time political hack named Harry Truman did? We can only hope.
