A r c h i t e c t u r e i s c o m m e n t a r y o n s o c i e t y, it is a physical manifestation of the societal conditions surrounding it. Architecture is a relationship with the void and it should be regarded as such. These selected works depict explorations of space and material and the continued development of understanding the built environment.

A Future Away From Apathy
TO DWELL Project concept
This project takes place in downtown Ames, Iowa as an infill building. We were introduced a client and a site and then given the responsibility of creating a business space and a dwelling space for the client. My client Ava Martinez is a multimedia artist who just moved back to the Ames area and is looking to expand her artistic talents to the community, she appreciates open studio environments as well as green spaces. This building is to be located next to The Octagon: Ames Center for the Arts, so it is integral to understand the history of the site before constructing a new building.
Artist Statement
A world led by connection, a life intertwined. This building works to build off of the history existing in downtown Ames. This area of Ames designated by Douglas Avenue, Main Street, and 5th Street is filled with rich artistry and history. Prominent features of this area are The Octagon, which functions as Ames’ Center for the arts and the Ames History Museum, which documents the histories of Ames both big and small. By introducing a new building into this area I aimed to build on those relationships and simultaneously disrupt them. The weaving facade of this building symbolizes the connections between the relationships that are preexisting in the downtown setting and the relationships to come. However, society cannot progress without reinvention which is why I opted to stray away from classical building materials. As most of the surrounding buildings are brick or stucco instead I introduced steel and wood to blend with the colors of downtown and bring a modern edge. This business and dwelling bridges the gaps in the community and fights against the ways of the past. Professor: Andrea Wheeler

The task of this project was to focus on architectural detail through a sensorial lens. After choosing a detail we then studied, expanded upon, and then recreated the detail. As my precedent I chose a corrugated concrete wall that had a very rough textured surface. The wall created a very interesting tactile experience for me so as I began to follow my curiosities surrounding the tactile experience I found inspiration in Touch Poem Five, which instructs the reader to start touching walls and examining their differences. This prompted me to recreate the corrugated pattern I felt on the wall with different materials to understand how materiality impacts the architectural experience. I created the pattern with wood, smooth and rough plaster, and canvas. Each material provided a drastically different feeling and also introduced different emotional responses with each change in material. This work ties into the famous sensorial explorations done by Juhani Pallasmaa. His goal was to move architecture away from occularcentrism and towards a complete sensorial experience. This project taught me many new things about how our surroundings and the materiality of them changes our perception of the world.

A FUTURE AWAY FROM APATHY Contemporary architecture is a largely theory based class in which three main topics were covered. Land, Media, and Modernities. Each of these topics were discussed at length in relation to architecture, each student was then assigned to create a publication of some form regarding the topic. This course taught me to understand the world through architecture and how intertwined it is with every aspect of life. I was challenged to think about history and its relation to the future through class discourse. The right side of the page depicts stills of a video manifesto I created in which a future exists without apathy. This project allowed me to combined my passion for videography and politics in which I aimed to depict the freedom of expression and how art without control is the way of the future, even in architecture. The graphic at the bottom of the page was from my Modernities publication. This project is a collage of hostile benches that is overlayed by a diagram focusing on the ways in which anti-homeless architecture has developed throughout history and how it continues to prevail in a society with the resources to aid rather than reject.
