FROM COACH MATTHEW MARION Welcome sponsors, athletes, coaches and spectators! My name is Matthew Marion and I’m the head Varsity Volleyball coach at Mercy High School. We are excited to present the first ever outdoor game in the State of Maryland! This opportunity wouldn’t be possible without the numerous people who helped with the planning and our generous partners. Initially, we reached out to multiple coaches across the U.S. who already hosted an outdoor volleyball match. They provided tons of helpful information on how they ran their events. Nick Penberthy out of Frontier High School in New York was extremely helpful in the initial planning. From there, the Mercy community has stepped up in a big way organizing this large event, and thank yous are in order! Our athletic department, led by Athletic Director Nick Gill, took a crazy idea we had in the fall and materialized it. Nick has answered the bell multiple times to help facilitate these games. Former Assistant Athletic Director George Panageotou P’23, ’26 helped move the idea along in the initial stages. Alex Jankowski ’22, our new assistant athletic director, has been instrumental in creating graphics and organizing sponsors. Joe Lesko P’29, ’22 does anything we’re unable to do including many logistical details with setting a court up outside. Heather Mork, director of communications and marketing, and Maeve Burke ’10, alumnae engagement manager, stepped in with program design and alumnae engagement. Many thanks to these members of Team Magic for their help making this event a success! Volleyball has continued to grow throughout the country, state and region. Participation is increasing, opportunities are opening for boys and girls at younger ages, and skill level in high schools is elevated. This isn’t an accident. Athletes in this area are falling in love with volleyball. They’re putting in extra reps to get better. They’re watching our national team and high-level college programs. They’re watching our local college teams. Volleyball at Mercy High School has mirrored what we’ve seen across the country. We have unselfish, hardworking girls who love the game and want to do anything to get better. There are three rosters full of girls with supportive families that want to leave our program in a better place than when they first arrived. We like to show our appreciation through action. This is my way of saying “thank you!”
