In an unprecedented year in the history of the world and in the life of our school, we dedicate this 2019-2020 Annual Report to the many frontline workers who are a part of the Mercy community.

From our own faculty and staff members who have kept our Mercy Girls learning, praying, and growing, to our alumnae healthcare professionals who have cared for all of us, your dedication and service during this global pandemic is nothing short of heroic.

Dear friends, Our 2019-2020 school year began with exciting markers of Mercy’s growth: an enthusiastic freshman class, a beautiful Mercy Day/Ring Day in our Weinberg Auditorium, a grand celebration of the opening of the Sisters of Mercy Athletic Complex, and a heartfelt production of “Steel Magnolias.” Little could we have imagined that we would finish the school year with online learning and a socially distanced July graduation. And we surely could not have imagined that the 54th Mercy/IND Game would be our very last match-up with our historic, friendly rival.

To the challenges that COVID-19 brought to us last year, “PIVOT” describes our mode. Following the state-ordered closing of school on Thursday, March 13, 2020, our heroic teachers pivoted, launching Mercy Online, our virtual learning model, the following Monday morning! Dean of Students Mary Ella Franz Marion ’76, P’09 chaired Mercy’s response to COVID-19 and was later joined in this critical work by Trustee Marylee Pearl Robinson ’96.

Our COVID-19 Response Team deployed faculty, staff, trustees, and other experts to navigate rapidly changing information and to create and implement protocols that eventually allowed students and staff to safely return to the Mercy campus.

The losses associated with the pandemic created an inflection point in the wider world—and our community.

As weeks of isolation turned into months, ramped-up communications and virtual events kept Mercy a connected, caring community. Our students, families, teachers, staff, and alumnae pulled together. And when the pandemic revealed anew the deep hurt of racial injustice, we leaned again into our Mercy values through dialogue, commitment, and action.

In 1827, Catherine McAuley responded to the challenges of her time with a deep pivot made possible by her closest friends and supporters. Nearly 200 years later, our pivot in the pandemic year was made possible by you— our dear Mercy Girls, families, alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends, and our beloved Sisters of Mercy. It is with deepest gratitude that we share this snapshot of this extraordinary moment in the life of Mercy High School.

Called to Do More Inspired by St. Francis’ words, “For it is in giving that we receive,” Makenzie Blackstone ’23 has been feeding the homeless of Baltimore City through B and Dee’s Baltimore Love’s mobile Lunch Patrol program since she was 13. In return she has found a community of caring volunteers with whom she gathers each month. As a middle school student, she learned about the program from her mother who spotted it on Facebook.

Makenzie knew immediately that she wanted to help those less fortunate than she is.

Once a month, Makenzie prepares sandwiches and packs lunches to bring to different locations around the city. She and her fellow volunteers also provide clothing, blankets, toiletries, occasional hot meals, and school supplies, as well as face masks and hand sanitizer since the COVID-19 outbreak began, to those in need.

“I wanted it to be different,” Makenzie shared, noting that there are few volunteers her age currently volunteering with the Lunch Patrol.

By telling her story, she hopes that maybe one day that will change. Looking to the future, Makenzie plans to expand her volunteer activities by serving as a Spanish language translator. Her six years thus far of studying Spanish are going to be put to good use!

Pondering what this experience has meant to her throughout the pandemic, Makenzie reflected that it is “in the hardest times when it feels really good to do something good for the community.”

We are deeply proud of Makenzie and all of our Mercy Girls who have reached out in service in this pandemic.

It’s really important to give back in the hardest times. This work is needed more than ever.

Mary McCotter Desi, M.D. ’99

Motivated by Passion Mary McCotter Desi, M.D. ’99 has worked as a family medicine physician for the past 11 years, but the last year has been like nothing she has seen before. Highlighting the flexibility she and her colleagues have shown in their Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania practice, Southern Family Medicine, Mary notes how frequently they have pivoted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have completely changed the way we practice.”

“It is scary, and physically and mentally exhausting, but doing what I do in that room has reenergized me as well,” Mary reflected.

Her patients’ emotions have run the gamut, so she focuses on the person in front of her, talking through his or her concerns, fears, and questions. In addition to the practice’s email updates, Mary also began an educational campaign about the virus and vaccines on social media. Her videos alleviated patient concerns and helped to dispel misinformation.

In March, they all but shut down and turned to telehealth medicine while devising a solution for how to screen and test their own patients on site. The solution? They built a small negative pressure room (NPR), typically found in hospitals to isolate infectious patients and keep potentially contaminated air from flowing to other areas. The team felt strongly that they wanted their patients to see doctors who knew them and not have to go elsewhere with their questions in the face of a COVID-19 diagnosis, so they built a testing site that was safe for them and for the practice’s staff.

Motivated to Reach Out When the pandemic hit and quarantine orders were first put into place, Natalie Vancura ’21, a Pinkard Scholar at St. Mary's Seminary and University, was working at Oak Crest Senior Living Community in Parkville, Maryland. She witnessed first-hand the impact the isolation had on the residents who were totally cut off from the world and their loved ones. After hearing of the Sharing Smiles program through Empowering the Ages, Natalie and her sister, Courtney ’22, teamed up to write notes to the elderly with the intention of becoming pen pals.

Inspired by their Catholic faith, this project was a creative approach to the Corporal Work of Mercy to visit the sick in pandemic times.

The girls wrote about school, their love of the beach and nature, their favorite ice cream flavors, and included a picture of their family with each letter, to foster a real connection.

A simple note can make anyone’s day.

It’s 10x more impactful because of the pandemic.

They quickly realized how much they enjoyed doing it and how little time it took to bring a smile to people’s faces and help them connect to the outside world.

Now, both sisters work as servers in the dining room at Oak Crest, engaging in friendly conversation with the residents while they serve meals. Noting how eager the residents were to return to dining together, Courtney knows that during the loneliness of this quarantine, she can provide friendship to the residents. Natalie is particularly grateful for how much she learns from them. “The elderly can often be overlooked, but they have so many experiences and wisdom to share,” remarked Natalie, “and have become some of my best friends.” They hope that their efforts inspire others to communicate more with those who are experiencing loneliness as a result of COVID-19.

Prepared to Lead “I have been going to the same church for 17 years, and when the pandemic hit, I couldn’t imagine not having that in my life.” When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down in-person gatherings including religious services, Brenda Solis ’22 felt compelled to help the church that has been so formative in her life.

Brenda felt passionately that there had to be a way to connect with church, to pray, and to facilitate faith sharing, even if the Iglesia Pentecostal de Evangelización Misionera Church congregation could not gather in person.

Fortunately, Brenda gained experience with ZOOM video conferencing at Mercy, and pitched the idea of Zoom services to her pastors after researching the cost. Many older members of her congregation were especially fearful during this time, and Brenda made personal calls to talk with fellow churchgoers and educate them about how to use the app.

Brenda’s initial idea blossomed into broadcasting three different services a week, as well as Sunday School and Saturday Bible School. In addition to church services, Brenda runs the technology for prayer groups where people can share their special intentions, read passages from Scripture, and sing songs together. She attributes the leadership qualities she developed at Mercy as having prepared her for this moment of being in front of everyone, helping to facilitate each program.

Blessings have come to Brenda as a result of dedicating so much time and energy to her church, realizing her desire to study technology in college, and playing a small part in helping people to keep their faith in and connection to God during this incredibly difficult time.
