20th Anniversary of 9/11
Flag Memorial in Honor of the
20TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11
On the 20th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, Mercy students paid tribute to the 2,977 victims. Social Studies and freshmen Religion classes placed a flag for each person who lost their life, and all students were invited to honor the victims by visiting the memorial and participating in a prayer service. Student lessons emphasized how 9/11 changed history in a number of ways including war, air travel, and surveillance. By reading “Five Ways September 11th Changed America” by Dave Roos (www.history.com), students gained an understanding that we are living in a "Post-9/11 Era" where a lot of our challenges today, such as ending the war in Afghanistan, have a direct connection to the 9/11 attacks.
“Mercy students helped create a memorial on campus to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 and learned in their classes how the attacks impacted major developments of the 21st century. At the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City there is a quote from Virgil that says, 'No day shall erase you from the memory of time.' These 2,977 flags represent the lives that were lost 20 years ago on September 11th, 2001. We can never forget that day and its impact on history.”
