I am so excited to begin my second year at Mercy High School. This is such an amazing institution with wonderful teachers, staff, and administrators. Many great accomplishments took place throughout my first year, from individual state champions to National Merit Finalists. Probably the greatest accomplishment revolved around enrollment. We saw an increase in enrollment for the first time in many years. This fall, we welcomed 92 freshmen. Go Monarchs!
We are stewards of what Catherine McAuley started nearly 200 years. Perhaps, more importantly we also harbor the Spirit that inspired Catherine McAuley to give without reservation to those who sought aid in bettering their lives. Our mission as a school draws directly from that: we focus on academic excellence and inspire young girls to become confident women of Mercy who embody faith, knowledge, and compassionate service.
I am humbled by the responsibility that comes with caring for the future of each of the young women who come through our doors every morning. Catherine McAuley once wrote, “The tender mercy of God has given us one another.” I feel as though I have been blessed with hundreds of daughters that I want to see learn, grow, and become Women of Mercy, women who will take that same fire from Catherine McAuley’s vision into the world.
Of course, I cannot do this alone. I need each of you to help our beloved Mercy High. First, we need your prayers. That spiritual community will lead to great changes if we ask God for his favor. Second, we need your support in talent and treasure. There is always a need to volunteer at school events and I am forever grateful for your financial support in the aid of educating young women. As enrollment increases so does the need for more tuition assistance. So now more than ever, your financial support is imperative. Know of my prayers for all of you.
Many blessings,
Mary Gibb President

A Woman of Mercy is defined as a spiritual, social and service—oriented person. Not only are women of mercy dedicated to service, they also live their lives out loud and are not afraid to be courageous, valiant and bold. Nothing rings truer for Sarita Ruma, Class of 1973. Sarita is the first female lodge president of the Sons & Daughters of Italy and credits Mercy as one of the catalysts that launched her into her current career path.
Sarita was born and raised in Omaha, and attended St. Patrick’s Parish. Mercy wasn’t really on the radar for Sarita as it was further than she was used to traveling for school. She hadn’t considered it until her brother, a graduate of Creighton Prep High School, suggested that she consider attending Mercy for high school. At a young age he saw the opportunity for young women to prosper and really pushed for her to go to Mercy. How right he was! Sarita chose to attend Mercy and bloomed where she was planted.
During her time at Mercy, Sarita participated in volleyball, basketball, and tennis. She was extremely active in her class as class president and also was outstanding senior her senior year. Mercy really helped bring Sarita out of her shell. The environment at Mercy helped her flourish and step outside of her comfort zone. When it came time for Sarita to choose a career, her experience as a student
at Mercy is what helped her make her decision. Coming from a family with a strong medical background, her choice to go into Recreational Therapy was very different from that of the rest of her family.
Sarita has continued to embody the true meaning of a woman of mercy as her time as the first woman president of the Sons and Daughters of Italy. Coming from a very strong Sicilian background, Sarita’s family was heavily involved with the Sons and Daughters of Italy growing up. The spring before her mother passed, she began to be very active with the organization again as a trustee. In 2013 she saw an opportunity to run for president and was nominated by another woman in the club. She was voted in and has continued to be re-elected. The Sons & Daughters of Italy’s mission is “to serve as the leading organizational voice on behalf of the cultural, social, political, and economic issues of importance to Americans of Italian heritage.” From childhood to adulthood, service has been engrained in Sarita. From participating heavily in school activities at Mercy to serving spaghetti on Thursday nights with The Sons & Daughters of Italy, service is a part of who Sarita is.
Mercy set the tone in Sarita’s life for self-expression and stepping outside of the box. We love to see our monarchs spread their wings and soar!
On August 14, we welcomed 92 new Mercy Girls to our school and 8 transfer students!
Mercy Girls gathered at the front of our school with welcome signs as they danced, yelled and sang for our new students!
Mercy Girls went all out for Catholic Schools Week! From dressing up as women we look up to on Girl Boss Day, to big hats and long trench coats for Wonka Day, and ending the week with Adoration. They capped off the week by taking party buses to the movie theatre to watch ‘Wonka.’
Our 2024 Spring Play, “The Miracle Worker,” took the stage this April after months of hard work and planning. Mercy Girls did a fantastic job with it and so did our staff!
All year long, our girls have been raising money for our mission to help young women in Kenya, Sudan, Cambodia, and Nigeria providing classroom supplies, uniforms, sanitary supplies, tuition, and bikes for transportation! Mercy Girls also participated in a technology-free day to live in solidarity with the girls living in Africa. They heard from two powerful speakers, Fr. Vitalis Anyanike and Sr. Jennifer Agbaja, who are both from Nigeria. Their inspirational words really motivated the girls to raise money for our Mission.
The total raised was $26,175.28 — thank you so much to everyone who donated and helped us surpass our goal!
This year, the juniors went home with the Monarch Cup, earning them a day off from school! We’re so proud to see how hard these girls worked for their goal—all while having a great time!
The Mercy High Treblemakers had a great season! They earned thirdrunner up at the Elkhorn Red Carpet Classic as well as at the Westside Competition of Excellence. They were selected as the Fan Favorite of the Day Rounds and put on an incredible show at their One Sweet Concert.
May Crowning, one of Mercy’s long-standing traditions, took place in early May. Certain girls are chosen as honorees to exemplify the grace and faith of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, in their day-to-day lives as students, friends, daughters, sisters and teammates. The following were chosen by their classmates to be members of the May Court:
May Queen: Kaylee Epp
Senior Court:
Alyssa Daniels & Molly Pensick
Junior Court:
Kaitlyn Beran & Ellah Hoge
Sophomore Court:
Shania Alvarez Hurtado & Anna Katherine Verdoni
Freshmen Court: Lucy Gerken & Mabry Lehan
We’d also like to congratulate our 2024 Outstanding Seniors: Kaylee Epp and Landry Lehan! These girls were chosen by the senior class, faculty, and administration and represent the class in an outstanding way. They are considered by their peers and leaders to be loyal, trustworthy, spirited, compassionate, generous, and dedicated while also being involved in school activities.
This year Abriendo Puertas celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month, sent students to the Nebraska Hispanic Latino Youth Summit, created an ofrenda to celebrate Día de los Muertos, and organized a toy drive to benefit the children served by Omaha’s Refugee Empowerment Center. They also attended the Cinco de Mayo parade in Omaha where they proudly represented Mercy High School!
This summer 2024, Mercy students embarked on a meaningful journey to McAllen, TX, where they volunteered with Arise, a mission founded and supported by the Sisters of Mercy. During their time there, the girls engaged with the youth of the Pharr, Edinburg, and Alamo migrant and immigration communities, leading summer camp activities and learning firsthand about life at the Mexico border. This experience allowed them to connect deeply with the community, offering service and gaining invaluable insights into the challenges faced by those living in the border regions.
Mercy Girl’s recent journey to Portugal and Spain this past summer was an unforgettable experience, filled with rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. They began their adventure with an overnight flight to Portugal, arriving in Lisbon where their Tour Director greeted them. The charm of Lisbon’s Alfama district captivated them as they wandered through its winding streets, discovering hidden balconies, medieval archways, and breathtaking views from Castelo de São Jorge. The iconic Belém Tower and Monument to Discoveries reminded them of Portugal’s illustrious Age of Discovery.
They visited the sacred Marian Apparition site in Fátima and enjoyed panoramic views of Lisbon’s red-tiled rooftops. Their exploration continued with a visit to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a marvel of Gothic architecture. Optional excursions took some of them to the fairytale landscapes of Sintra and Cascais, while others enjoyed the soulful melodies of a traditional Lisbon Fado evening.
In Evora, they walked through history during a tour of the Chapel of Bones before heading to the Algarve’s stunning coastline. Standing at the Point of Saudade and Cape St. Vincent, they marveled at the breathtaking views and explored the historic Fortaleza de Sagres.
Seville, the heartbeat of Andalusian culture, welcomed them with its narrow, twisting alleys in Barrio de Santa Cruz and the grandeur of Plaza de España. They paid their respects at the grave of Christopher Columbus in Seville Cathedral and learned about the city’s rich history at the Plaza de Toros.
Their time in Costa del Sol was a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, with an excursion to Gibraltar, where they ventured into the fascinating St. Michael’s Cave. In Granada, the Alhambra left them in awe with its intricate Moorish architecture and lush surroundings—a true highlight of their journey.
Barcelona dazzled them with its artistic spirit as they explored the twisting spires of La Sagrada Familia and enjoyed panoramic views from Montjuïc Hill. Finally, in Madrid, they immersed themselves in the city’s vibrant culture, exploring Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the royal splendor of the Palacio Real. The flamenco dance lesson and performance in Madrid added a passionate and fiery finale to their trip, as they learned about the dance’s deep cultural roots.

Averi Sanders ’10 is our Director of Events and Alumnae! After years of working with us for our FIESTA event, Averi brings eight years of professional experience in event planning and networking. Her passion and commitment to details are some of the many reasons we’re happy to have this alumna back as a staff member!
Aseret Bertram graduated from the University of Kansas and spent three years working in an advertising agency in Kansas City. Aseret now brings a rich amount of knowledge in social media and all things marketing to Mercy. Her culturally-related content and power to bring people together through her creative process are what make her the perfect fit as our Director of Communications and Graphic Design! Not to mention, she speaks multiple languages!
Sammi Marousek , our new Director of Admissions & Recruitment, comes to us with over 10 years of experience as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher in Lincoln and Elkhorn all while she earned her Masters in Educational Leadership & Administration. With her outgoing nature, creativity, and abundant energy, she felt a strong resonance with this role as she also resonates deeply with Mercy’s mission.
Oscar Gonzalez is our new Athletic Director! Prior to joining Mercy, he was a Spanish Teacher and Activities Event Administrative Support at Concordia Jr./Sr. High School. With 18 years of coaching and teaching under his belt, he loved seeing his students and athletes become successful in and out of the classroom as well as on the field/court. This passion for fostering success led him to transition into administration, where he has the privilege of helping both students and coaches reach their full potential.
Tiffany Howard is our new Assistant Principal. Before spending 17 years at St James/Seton Catholic School, Tiffany’s school life at St. Joan of Arc Grade School and College of Saint Mary connected her to the Sisters of Mercy and she was truly never the same.
Rob Taylor is joining Mercy High School as a Math teacher, bringing a rich background in law and education. A Nebraska native, he earned top honors with degrees in Mathematics and Economics from UC Santa Barbara and a law degree from Creighton University. He spent over a decade balancing a legal career with teaching at universities and a sister Mercy school in California. Now back in Omaha, he’s discerning a call to the priesthood while sharing his expertise with Mercy students this year.
Jeanne Latka Rashid ’85 spent 40 years working with CHI. Now, she’s thrilled to be back at Mercy High School as our Office Manager, where young women are inspired to become confident leaders of faith, knowledge, and compassionate service. A fun fact: during her sophomore, junior, and senior years, she did her work study in the Mercy High School office under the mentorship of Mrs. Janie O’Donnell!
John Bell is overjoyed to be teaching at Mercy High School. He graduated from Creighton University in 2023 and is excited to be teaching English and Theater. He enjoys teaching others how to reflect on their strengths and talents as both a writer and actor. When he isn’t teaching, he enjoys walking downtown, caring for his plants, and spending time with his friends and family.
Fiesta 2024, held on February 3 at the Marriott downtown Omaha at the Capitol District, was truly one for the books. The evening was a celebration of community, filled with laughter, delicious food, and overwhelming support from our alumnae and the Mercy community. A special highlight of the night was honoring Sr. Jeanne O’Rourke as the Cor Misericordiae (Heart of Mercy) Honoree.
To say Sr. Jeanne O’Rourke has transformed Mercy would be an understatement. Mercy High School is the way it is because of the love, energy, and passion Sr. Jeanne pours into each and every single Mercy girl — past, present and future. With a heart as big as hers and hospitality skills as strong as hers, it’s no wonder she is what makes Mercy, Mercy. For 36 years, she’s been shaping young women at Mercy and walking through different seasons of their lives, creating a special bond and a safe environment for them all. From being a Campus Minister, to a knowledgeable cross-country coach to the best Tea Time host, Sr. Jeanne has forever changed the way Mercy High School is, and she is so deserving of this award.
On behalf of the entire Mercy High School community, including the dedicated FIESTA volunteers, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who participated in this exclusive and successful event. Your support plays a crucial role in providing deserving girls the opportunity to attend and succeed at Mercy through the Negotiated Tuition Program. Each year, your investment helps distribute nearly $2 million in tuition assistance, with nearly 82% of families receiving financial support for their education.
As the plane ascended from the sunny beaches of Cancun, two women found themselves seated next to each other, bound for the States. Despite their age difference, they quickly discovered a shared history that would spark an unforgettable conversation. Sonia Stovall, a Mercy High School alumna from the Class of 1991, glanced over and noticed Sheila Hearity Gleason, a dignified woman in her seventies. They exchanged pleasantries, and as the conversation unfolded, they discovered an incredible connection: Sheila, a proud Mercy High graduate of the Class of 1965, had much more in common with Sonia than they initially thought. Their shared bond over Mercy High School quickly turned the conversation to their respective journeys since graduation. Sheila, a
parishioner of Sacred Heart since 1996, was thrilled to learn that Sonia had attended Sacred Heart as well, before making her way through the halls of Mercy High. They both also attended Creighton Law School! Sheila listened with pride and admiration as Sonia recounted her impressive career. Sonia not only teaches but also works for the government and has recently launched a new program dedicated to empowering women. This serendipitous meeting reminded them both of the powerful connections and lifelong bonds forged at Mercy High School. Sheila left the plane to head back to Iowa inspired by Sonia’s accomplishments, while Sonia felt honored to have met such a trailblazer from her alma mater as she made her way back to Colorado.

In April of 2023, Rachel Ellerbruch (Huntoon) ’01 and her family sold most of their things, including their house, and moved into a travel trailer to start traveling the country as a family! Her husband, Brian, works remotely from their camper and she homeschools their kids. So far they have seen most of California, Wyoming, and South Dakota. They spent the fall and winter in the southeast with warmer weather. They are loving exploring God’s creation. For Fiscal Year July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024
This report provides a listing of women and men who are committed to the mission of Mercy High School. It also provides highlights of the activities and student outcomes that are directly impacted by their generosity and investment. This report serves as a reminder that it’s only through the support of these generous alumnae, parents and friends that our faith-based, college preparatory education is possible.
The school year is well underway and it promises to be another year full of promise and opportunity for the wonderful students of Mercy High School. As board chair, it is a privilege to greet you and to express appreciation for your generous support of Mercy High School. As board members, we are inspired and energized by the mission of Mercy of High School, particularly when there is clear evidence that the experience at Mercy truly opens doors of possibility for all who come. The students are able to thrive in a community that combines rich educational opportunities with vibrant faith experiences. Moreover, the students are truly prepared to embody and live out the values of Mercy. Your generous support of Mercy High School is key to making all of these outcomes a reality. Thank you for your financial and spiritual support as we work together to educate these young women of Mercy High School.
As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past school year, I want to express appreciation to Mrs. Mary Gibb, President, Mrs. Kristi Wessling, Principal, and the entire faculty and staff of Mercy High School. Their exemplary leadership around many strategic and day-to-day initiatives and activities come together to create a strong, positive educational community in support of the development of these young women to become confident Women of Mercy. The faculty and staff live out and model the Mission of Mercy every day. They provide an excellent education; they are grounded in the Catholic faith; they exemplify hospitality; they are compassionate and have a deep respect for all humanity; and they answer the call to service every day with and for the students of Mercy.
In addition to expressing appreciation to the Mercy faculty and staff, I want to acknowledge the service of several board members. First, many thanks to Nicole Hahn Jesse for her years of leadership as board chair. While her term on the board has expired, she will continue her involvement with Mercy as a member of the Board Advancement Committee. Second, we are deeply grateful for the service and wise counsel of Bob Gonderinger. While Bob’s term on the board also has expired, he has agreed to support the work of Mercy through involvement with the Finance Committee of the Board. Finally, we are thankful for the involvement of Mr. Tim Schmad and Fr. Kevin Schneider on the Mercy board as well.
The Mercy Mission is transformative and we need to continue to spread the news far and wide. Mercy’s Board of Trustees continue to focus their efforts for Mercy’s growth and sustainability through their strategic planning efforts. We are thankful for the areas of success with these efforts, particularly with gains in new student enrollment coming into this school year. That being said, we must remain disciplined and focused on our efforts to grow enrollment and to grow support for Mercy High School. You will continue to see the fruits of enhanced marketing to broaden our reach in telling the Mercy story. Moreover, we are committed to advancement goals that continue to build a strong foundation for the long-term future of Mercy High School.
Thank you for your continued prayers and support of the young women of Mercy High School. In Catherine’s words “No work of charity can be more productive of good to society than the careful instruction of women”.
With Gratitude and In Mercy,
