LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Embracing Our Legacy, Envisioning our Future. As the leaves begin to turn and another school year unfolds, I am proud to share that Mercy continues to thrive – wrapped in the enduring strength of our mission and the promise of what lies ahead. Our theme for this year is: The Cloak of Mercy – From Many Homes, One Mercy Family – Wrapped in God’s Love. This theme beautifully captures the spirit that has long defined our community: one of compassion, resilience and transformative love. This theme invites us to reflect on the powerful image of God’s mercy as a cloak: sheltering, uniting and calling us to extend compassion to others. This year’s theme honors the many cultures, languages and stories that make up our Mercy family and lifts up the Critical Concern for immigration. We should see all people as beloved members of God’s family, wrapped in the same cloak of mercy as we are. Through acts of welcome, justice, prayer and presence, we become that cloak for others. For generations, Mercy girls have been wrapped in that legacy, carrying it forward into the world with grace and purpose. Whether in classrooms, careers or communities around the globe, Mercy alumnae are leading with courage, empathy and excellence. In that same spirit of growth and transformation, I am excited to share that Mercy High School is currently undergoing a new strategic plan. This initiative is more than just a roadmap-it is a commitment to our mission, values and the evolving needs of our students. We are engaging voices from across the Mercy community including students, faculty, parents, alumnae and board members to shape a plan that ensures our school not only remains strong, but becomes even more innovative, inclusive and impactful for years to come. While we plan for the future, the present is equally inspiring. Mercy girls are achieving extraordinary things-from academic honors to competitive activities to bold service projects. Our graduates continue to distinguish themselves in universities and industries worldwide, many returning to share their journeys with the next generation. Their successes are not only testament to their talent and hard work but to the Mercy foundation that nurtured their growth. As we look ahead, we are reminded that the cloak of Mercy is not static. It grows, adapts and strengthens with each new wearer. I invite you, our alumnae, to continue wrapping yourselves in this legacy and helping us extend it to every girl who walks through our doors. Fall 2025

First Day! Nothing beats the first day of school at Mercy! Our Mercy Girls filled the sidewalks, cheering on the Class of 2029 as they arrived for their very first day of high school. From a hilarious teacher skit introducing our staff to the tradition of receiving their Greenie hats, it was a morning full of energy, laughter, and Mercy spirit. Here’s to a year of growth, friendship, unforgettable memories and ruling the year

NELYS Ten of our students attended the Nebraska Latino Youth Summit (NELYS) last school year an event dedicated to empowering and uplifting young Latinos across our great state. The summit aims to ignite the aspirations of our Latino youth and equip them with the tools they need to reach new heights of success.

Day of Serving Last year, our junior class dedicated their day to serving at Open Door Mission, a Gospel Rescue Mission founded in 1954 and committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Our Mercy Girls rolled up their sleeves and lent a helping hand, living out our values of compassion, service, and justice. Experiences like these are a powerful reminder of how Mercy students make a real impact in the community — and how serving others shapes them into women of Mercy for life.

Day of Discovery 2025 Day of Discovery 2025 was a big hit! Every year, on this day, teachers plan different adventures for groups of students to experience instead of attending school. Students sign up for the trips that they are most interested in, and Student Council assigns the trips through a lottery. From a trip to Kansas City, self-defense classes, a visit to the Museo Latino, downtown Omaha views and more, this is truly a day Mercy Girls look forward to and never forget!

Bowling for Fathers The Father-Daughter Bowling Event brought together Mercy Girls and their dads for a day of faith, fun, and a little friendly competition. The evening began in our chapel with Sunday Mass, a beautiful moment of reflection and gratitude, before moving to the bowling lanes. Between the strikes, spares, and the occasional gutter ball, laughter and memories filled the night — reminding us how cherished these traditions are to our Mercy community.

May Crowning & Outstanding Seniors We celebrated one of our most beloved and time-honored traditions again this year — May Crowning. This cherished day holds special significance for seniors, as it is the first time they wear their caps and gowns, stepping gracefully into the final moments of their Mercy journey. We were honored to recognize our Outstanding Seniors for their leadership, character, and contributions to the Mercy community: Lauren Schmidt and Mary Gurnon. The Class of 2025 leaves Mercy with a legacy of scholarship, service, and success—living proof of the transformative power of a Mercy education.

Girl Effect Four current Mercy Girls traveled to Philadelphia this summer to attend the Mercy Girl Effect Conference, joining students from nine other Mercy schools across the country. Together, they explored ways to raise awareness on pressing global issues while also developing their leadership skills and discovering their unique strengths. The experience was not only inspiring but also empowering, reinforcing the idea that when Mercy Girls unite, they can make a meaningful difference in the world.

Mercy Open Tennis Tournament The Mercy Open Tennis Tournament was more than just a day of friendly competition—it was a celebration of community and giving. Alongside the matches, Mercy hosted a toy drive benefiting Project Harmony, collecting stuffed animals, crayons, Hot Wheels, and more. Students, families, and friends came together to support children in need, showing that the spirit of Mercy extends far beyond the court. We are so grateful for the generosity that made this event a smashing success!

The Mercy tradition continued as the juniors surprised the seniors with the announcement of PA during our Nocturne court announcement this year. The juniors put on an incredible and laughter-filled show featuring The Hunger Games theme that was this year’s prom.

Prom Royalty 2025 Prom Queen, Stephanie Gomez Alcala, and Princesses, Bailey Murphy and Hailey Carlsen, who all represented Mercy with grace and spirit. It was a wonderful night spent honoring tradition and celebrating the beauty, confidence, and sisterhood of all our Monarchs.

Celebrating the Class of 2025 The Mercy High School Class of 2025 has much to celebrate as they close out their senior year with incredible accomplishments. Every graduate — 100% of the class — is pursuing a post-secondary option, with students admitted into more than 95 different colleges and universities across the country. Together, they earned an impressive $11.7 million in scholarship dollars, with 86% of the class receiving one or more scholarships. On average, each graduate was awarded $212,747 in scholarships. Academic excellence was further highlighted by three National Merit Finalists, a remarkable distinction within the class. In addition to their academic achievements, the Class of 2025 demonstrated Mercy’s mission of faith and service. Over their four years, they contributed more than 5,308 service hours, with 95% of the class exceeding the service requirement. The Class of 2025 leaves Mercy with a legacy of scholarship, service, and success — living proof of the transformative power of a Mercy education.

My Life in Nebraska Exhibit Congratulations to Senior Annabelle Carney ‘25! Her artwork, “Will They Still Play Games When the World Burns,” was chosen to be included in the 8th annual My Life in Nebraska Exhibit at the Governor’s Residence over the summer. The Nebraska Arts Council, Gallery 1516, and the Omaha Public Schools Art Department, as the Affiliate for Young Artists and Writers, joined together to celebrate the outstanding talent and artwork of participating Scholastic Art Awards of Nebraska students. Congratulations once again to Annabelle!

Educator of the Year We are thrilled to celebrate our very own Mrs. Julie Vankat, who has been honored as Secondary Educator of the Year at the 2025 Archbishop’s Dinner for Education! This prestigious recognition highlights her exceptional dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to the students of Mercy High School. Julie’s impact reaches far beyond the classroom — she inspires Mercy Girls to grow in faith, strive for excellence, and embrace the values that make our community so special. Her leadership and heart for Catholic education truly embody the mission of the Archdiocese of Omaha. Congratulations, Mrs. Vankat! We are beyond proud and grateful for all you do to make Mercy a place where students thrive academically, spiritually, and personally.

The Journey of a Mercy Girl Our Honors Art students completed a breathtaking legacy mural that captures the journey of a Mercy girl from freshman to senior year. Each flower in the piece holds a special meaning, symbolizing the growth, transformation, and sisterhood that define the Mercy experience. This stunning work of art is more than a mural — it’s a visual love letter to the Mercy community, created to inspire future generations of Monarchs. Introducing New Staff Katie Amoruso Director of Events & Alumnae We’re excited to welcome our new Director of Events & Alumnae to Mercy High School! With years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and event planning, she is passionate about creating engaging experiences that bring people together for a common cause. Her strong organizational skills and attention to detail ensure every event runs smoothly, while her positive energy and enthusiasm help build meaningful connections within the Mercy community. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her husband and their dogs. We’re thrilled to have her talents and spirit on our team!

Catie Johnson Administrative Assistant Please join us in welcoming Catie Johnson as Mercy High School’s new Administrative Assistant. Catie brings a wealth of experience in education, parish coordination, client service, and event planning, as she serves as Director of Evangelization and Education at Holy Cross. She is skilled, detail-oriented, and dedicated to supporting students, staff, and the Mercy community. We’re so fortunate to have Catie on our team, helping us keep Mercy running smoothly while fostering a positive, welcoming environment for all.

FIESTA 2025: Celebrating Faith, Fun and Mercy On a joyful February evening at the Downtown Marriott in Omaha, the Mercy community came together for FIESTA 2025 — a night filled with celebration, connection, and Mercy spirit. The evening began with a beautiful Mass, followed by a lively cocktail hour and an elegant dinner where Mercy friends and family joined in fellowship.

The highlight of the evening was honoring Sr. Delores Hannon with the Cor Misericordiae Award—the highest honor anyone affiliated with Mercy can receive. Sr. Delores has been a beaming light of joy and a remarkable role model for generations of Mercy Girls. Her faithful dedication

to living out the mission of Catherine McAuley and her immeasurable gifts to our beloved school make her a true embodiment of Mercy. This year’s ’70s theme added an extra spark of fun, with some guests going all out in groovy outfits that made the night unforgettable. Most importantly, thanks to the generosity of those who attended, donated, and volunteered, FIESTA raised vital support for Mercy’s negotiated tuition program, ensuring that a Mercy education remains accessible to all young women. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported FIESTA 2025 in honor of Sr. Delores.

A Bond for Life Mercy Alum Finds a Lifesaving Match Through a Sisterhood That Endures In a story that radiates hope, faith, and the power of lifelong connection, Chrissy Molacek Zbylut ‘09 recently shared a life-changing update—she has found a living kidney donor. And in true Mercy fashion, her match turned out to be more than a miracle—it was a fellow Mercy girl. Back in October, Chrissy bravely shared her story publicly and began the emotional search for a living kidney donor. She was met with overwhelming love and support from friends, family, and even strangers who were moved by her courage and wanted to help. Among the many messages and applications, one stood out in particular. Her match was Emily Gentleman Crowe ‘06, an old friend from high school and former Mercy softball teammate. Although they hadn’t seen each other in years, the bond they formed on the field and through their shared Mercy experience had never truly faded. The selfless act of organ donation is a profound expression of love, and Chrissy’s gratitude is as deep as it is wide. She reflected on the unique connection Mercy girls share: “It’s funny, because being a Mercy girl bonds you for life with these amazing women. Our paths crossed, and I truly believe it was meant to be.”

Chrissy also extended her thanks to the many members of the Mercy community who offered help, shared her story, or

“Emily, you are blessing me with a second chance at life,” Chrissy wrote in a heartfelt post. “You’re helping make sure I’m here and healthy to be a mom to Brock. This is a gift that can never be repaid.” considered becoming a donor. Her surgery is expected to take place in the coming months, and she’s continuing to update her community with every step of the journey. Her story is a powerful testament to what it means to be a Mercy woman—rooted in compassion, bound by sisterhood, and always ready to rise to the call of another. From all of us at Mercy, we are praying for a bright, healthy future for both Chrissy and Emily.

ALUMNAE UPDATES

Jane Green Alseth ’65 was honored with the Believe & Achieve Award at Creighton University’s Leaders for Life Luncheon on May 2, 2025. The award recognized her outstanding professional achievements and dedication to empowering women through community service and leadership. A graduate of NebraskaOmaha and Creighton Law School (JD ’72), Jane had a distinguished career as an attorney, including positions with the Federal Land Bank of Omaha, InterNorth Inc., the Enron Foundation, and Tenaska. She was deeply involved in the Omaha community, serving on the City of Omaha Personnel Board, directing the Women’s Center for Advancement, and serving on numerous boards including Mercy High School and the UNO Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies. Jane and her late husband, Jeffrey, are parents to two Creighton graduates, Brian and Kathryn. She passed away on July 15, 2025. Susan Kuzela ’72 recently retired and continues to share her time and talents with the Omaha community through volunteer work with Film Streams and The Omaha Community Playhouse—two cultural icons celebrating their 100-year anniversaries this year. Katy Butts Zarraga ’03 recently completed her Master’s in School Counseling and Preventative Mental Health at Creighton University. Katy will also continue her work at Evolution Soccer Club, where she has stepped into a new role as Director of Operations. She is excited for this opportunity and feels blessed to work in an environment where players come first. Molly Elston ’07, Ali Opitz ’07, Steph Opitz Bockmann ’03, and Becky Opitz Behrendt ’99 participated in the Courage Classic, an annual fundraiser for Children’s Hospital Colorado held in Copper Mountain. Steph’s son, Drake, pictured with the group, is a recipient of lifesaving care provided by Children’s Hospital Colorado. Over the past four years, as part of “Team Super Drake!”, these Mercy grads—along with classmates, friends, and family—have raised nearly $100,000 to support cancer care and research. Katelyn Turnquist Dethlefs ‘14 and her husband, Mark Dethlefs, joyfully welcomed their daughter, Cecilia Scott, in October 2023. Cecilia joins big sister Raelynn in the Dethlefs family. Amber Johnson ’14 was awarded a prestigious Fulbright grant and is spending the year in Baia Mare, Romania, teaching philosophy, tourism, and history courses at a local university.

Reunions Sunday, September 28, we gathered at Mercy High School for our 2025 All School Reunion. The morning started with Mass at our chapel, celebrating the Class of 1975 for their 50th anniversary! After the blessing of their Golden Guild pins, alumnae made their way to the dining hall for a catered brunch where they caught up with old friends, reminisced about their years as Mercy Girls and had lots of laughs.

The Class of 1959 had a 65th Reunion on September 27, 2024 at Cascio’s Restaurant. It was a fun evening catching up and reminiscing. Our class was the first four year Mercy class and there many stories about moving into the building and our wonderful time at Mercy. Many thanks to all attendees. The Class of 1965 celebrated their 60th reunion with a dinner at Cascio’s on May 8, organized by Pat Moore Hayes and Nancy Reiman Tex. The weekend continued with a gathering at Nancy Tex’s lake home, where classmates enjoyed reconnecting and reminiscing.

The Class of 2000 got together to celebrate 25 years.

Mercy Alumnae Explore Greece and Beyond

This summer, 24 travelers — mostly Mercy alumnae — embarked on an unforgettable journey to Greece, departing on July 7. The group explored the rich history of Athens, soaked in the beauty of Mykonos, and experienced the breathtaking sunsets of Santorini. For half of the travelers, the adventure didn’t stop there — they continued on to Rome for an exciting extension filled with ancient wonders and Italian charm. Whether reconnecting with old friends or making new ones, this trip was a perfect blend of cultural exploration, breathtaking sights, and Mercy sisterhood that stretched across continents. Sister Johanna Burnell, RSM August 24, 1938 - March 28, 2025

A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Sister Johanna Burnell was born on August 24, 1938. Her parents, Samuel and Johanna (Manley) Burnell named her Rita Imelda. Rita became acquainted with the Sisters of Mercy at a young age. They were her teachers in elementary and high school. Five years after graduating from Glennon High School in Kansas City, she traveled to Omaha, Nebraska, to enter the religious community. There she received her religious name: Sister Johanna. For more than six decades, Sr. Johanna contributed her time and remarkable talents as an educator. She served as an elementary teacher in Catholic schools in Nebraska and Missouri. For 13 years, she was the principal at St. Peter Grade School in Kansas City. In 1984, the Diocese of Kansas City named her associate superintendent of schools. Sr. Johanna left Kansas City in 1988 to become the first president of Mercy High School in Omaha. In this newly created position, she shared leadership responsibilities with the principal, Carolyn Jaworski ‘64. Sr. Johanna’s position specifically concentrated on school awareness, parents, and the school’s board and advancement activities. It was a challenging time for the all-girls school; Mercy High was in danger of closing. During Sr. Johanna’s 21 years as president, she was a creative innovator. She laid the foundation for

more strategic leadership, recruited business leaders and alumnae to the board, and increased development and fundraising activities. She revamped the school’s negotiated tuition program, enabling hundreds of families to provide opportunities for their daughters who otherwise could not afford to attend. Described as “a morally just, confidential, individual covenant between Mercy and each family, respecting each family’s needs and income, and providing equal access,” the program has become a successful, enduring part of Mercy High School. A no-nonsense and kind-hearted educator, Sr. Johanna also possessed a wry sense of humor that endeared her to faculty and students alike. After her retirement in 2009, she not only kept in touch with students and their families but also continued to support the mission. 17

First president of Mercy dies Sister Johanna Burnell, the former president of Mercy High School in Omaha died March 28 in Omaha. She was 86. Born Rita Imelda Burnell in Kansas City, Missouri, she was named the first president of Mercy in 1988. The school, founded in 1955, was struggling at the time with declining enrollment and in danger of being closed. During her 21 years of leadership, Sister Johanna increased fundraising efforts and recruited business leaders and alumnae to the board of directors. She revamped the school’s negotiated tuition program, which enabled hundreds of students to enroll whose families otherwise would have been unable to afford the cost. The negotiated tuition program has become a successful and enduring legacy of the school. Sister Johanna also served as the development director for Mercy Volunteer Corps, a one-year volunteer service program for recent college graduates. She was a member of the Mercy Secondary Education Association, and served on the boards of the College of St. Mary in Omaha and Mt. Saint Mary Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mercy High School Annual Report For Fiscal Year July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025 This report provides a listing of women and men who are committed to the mission of Mercy High School. It also provides highlights of the activities and student outcomes that are directly impacted by their generosity and investment. This report serves as a reminder that it’s only through the support of these generous alumnae, parents and friends that our faith-based, college preparatory education is possible. 19

From Your Board Chair: The 2025-2026 school year began with the beautiful tradition of our upper-class students enthusiastically welcoming incoming freshmen as they begin their journey to becoming “confident women of Mercy.” Hello, I’m Annie Messersmith, and I am honored to serve as Chair of the Mercy Board of Directors this year. I have always been inspired by Mercy’s commitment to make a Mercy education possible for any young woman who wants to attend. This is a noble goal, and because of your continued support, Mercy has been able to make it a reality. The halls are filled with conversation engaging students from nearly every zip code in the greater Omaha area. I am also pleased to share that Sister Maryanne Stevens, RSM is serving as Vice Chair. Her experience as President of the College of Saint Mary and her years of service as a Sister of Mercy are instrumental in ensuring Mercy remains true to its spirit and charism. Mercy High School is alive and well, and we are optimistic about our future for several reasons. Our leadership team is strong, with Mary Gibb entering her third year as President. She has brought a fresh perspective to operations and is making great strides in leveraging the talents of both her academic and administrative teams. We’ve a new interim principal, Kris Hennings, who brings years of dedicated experience in Catholic education. Our faculty is deeply engaged in supporting the academic and spiritual growth of our students. Our students are thriving whether they find it easy to learn or more difficult. Indeed, three of our 2025 graduating seniors achieved National Merit Finalist recognition, an impressive accomplishment given the relative size of Mercy. We are in the midst of a strategic planning process designed to set clear, measurable goals for the next three years. We’ll be ready to unveil our vision, goals, and strategies during the first quarter of 2026. Working on the plan are representatives from across the Mercy community-Board members, faculty, students, parents, and alumna. Our focus areas include faith, academics, leadership, and operations. Sister Maryanne and I are both impressed with the thoughtful input we are receiving and the process is providing a wonderful opportunity to connect and build relationships across our community. Stay tuned, as we will be sharing the specific goals and keeping you updated on the action plans and progress. Sister Maryanne and I often speak of how much we like the tag line, “faith in her future,’ because it speaks to our commitment to encouraging students to find inspiration in the mystery of God and Jesus being with us and expresses our belief that a Mercy education calls forth all that a young woman needs for the road ahead.
