FIESTA
Mercy High School
Sr. Delores

THANK YOU
A MESSAGE FROM MARY GIBB & KRISTI WESSLING
As we come together for this year’s FIESTA, we want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for being here tonight. This incredible event is not only a celebration of our Mercy community but also a testament to the generosity and dedication of individuals like you who believe in the transformative power of a Mercy education.

Your support continues to open doors for deserving young women, helping make a Mercy education accessible through our Negotiated Tuition Program. Last year alone, nearly 82% of our families received tuition assistance, with over $2 million in aid distributed annually. Because of your kindness and investment, these girls are empowered to learn, grow, and shine as they prepare to make a difference in the world.
At Mercy High School, our students embody the Core Values that are the foundation of a Mercy education. These values — compassion, spirituality, respect, and dignity — are not only principles they learn but ideals they carry into every aspect of their lives. Inspired by the words of Catherine McAuley, “We should be as shining lamps, giving light to all around us,” our Mercy Girls are bright beacons in their communities. Whether in the classroom, on the stage or field, or through service projects throughout Omaha, their light and leadership shine brightly.
Thanks to your ongoing support, we are building on the momentum of Mercy’s mission. Tonight, as you enjoy this special evening, we invite you to invest in the future of these remarkable young women by bidding, donating, or purchasing one of the many unique auction items presented. Every gift, no matter the size, helps provide access to the life-changing experience of a Mercy education.
Thank you for being an integral part of this mission and for your love of Mercy High School. May God bless you and may His Mercy continue to guide us all.

COR MISERICORDIAE AWARD WINNER
Sister Delores Hannon to Receive Cor Misericordiae Award
Nestled along a quiet stretch of rural highway in eastern Iowa, the town of North English boasted a population of no more than 800 souls. It was here, amidst the rolling farmlands and under the vast Midwestern skies, that Sister Delores Hannon was born— the only child of hardworking dairy farmers. Her childhood was shaped by the rhythms of farm life: early mornings, the lowing of cattle, and the steady hum of labor.
Growing up in a small town where there weren’t many options to a Catholic education, her parents gently encouraged her to consider a Catholic school when it was time for college. This led her to Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, where she first encountered the Sisters of Mercy. At the time, she had no intention of staying with the order. Joining the convent was simply a means to an end — a way to perform meaningful service, akin to the Peace Corps but closer to home. She volunteered with the Sisters of Mercy for a few years, figuring she’d move on eventually. But life, as it often does, had other plans. Fifty-five years later, she looks back on that decision with gratitude. It wasn’t a grand spiritual awakening that drew her to the convent, but the daily acts of service, the growing sense of purpose, and, eventually, a deepening relationship with God that kept her there. After taking her final vows, her first assignment was not far from where her journey with the Sisters of Mercy began. Armed with a teaching degree in mathematics, she was sent to a diocesan high school just at the foot of the hill where Mount Mercy University stood. It was a short distance geographically, but the start of a long and winding journey in service and education. Teaching wasn’t just about the curriculum; it was

about relationships. She understood you build a relationship with the kids first, and then you can teach them.
Sister Dee had been advocating for students who needed just a bit more guidance, encouragement, or understanding. She couldn’t measure it scientifically, but sometimes she just had a feeling about a kid — that they’re going to be okay if she worked with them and if they put in the effort. She then got to see them

walk across the stage at graduation and think to herself, “They made it.”
Her journey to Mercy High School in Omaha began in 2009 and was far from planned, but then again, much of her life seemed to unfold through moments of unexpected grace. She was happily serving as the president of St. Edmond High School in Fort Dodge, Iowa, when Sister Johanna Burnell, RSM, the outgoing president of Mercy High School at the time, began to campaign for her to take over the role. Sister Johanna’s timing was impeccable. While Sister Dee was dealing with some serious loss at her current school, Sister Johanna completely understood it was not the time to discuss this opportunity. It was that understanding of the weight and rhythm of school life that planted the first seed of possibility. A couple of weeks later, Sister Johanna called again and eventually led to Sister Dee’s “yes” to Mercy High School. After hearing about the incredible work Sister Johanna had done at Mercy, Sr. Dee was intrigued.
Her transition to Mercy High School came with new opportunities for growth such as serving a more diverse student body and their families, building relationships with donors and major upgrades to the school building including a new HVAC system and the addition of the Academic Success Center. In addition to all of these, she also navigated the COVID-19 pandemic with no clear blueprint.
During the pandemic, she led the Mercy community to continuously pivot to ensure both education

and well-being remained priorities. Challenges included addressing disparities, such as students without internet access, supporting faculty and students emotionally, and reimagining traditions like graduation. Despite the struggles, the commitment to keep moving forward exemplified resilience and teamwork.
Sister Delores credits her role as a Sister of Mercy for opening doors she never anticipated and providing steadfast support for their endeavors. She humbly recognizes herself as a small, we say immense, part of Mercy High School by the legacy she has left upon many — students, staff, families and even other sisters of Mercy. She challenged people when they needed to be challenged, praised people when they deserved it, and always reminded people how much God loved them. She’s always there to lend a listening ear and a warm smile.
As she considers what she might tell her younger self, the advice is simple yet profound: Be open to surprises, do things that scare you, and trust in God and in yourself.
With over 55 years as a Sister of Mercy, Sister Delores is filled with gratitude, knowing that the community’s support, challenges, and shared mission have enriched her life immeasurably. The journey of service, as Sister Delores reminds us, is ongoing, carried forward by faith, love, and a steadfast belief in the power of small, meaningful actions.
