Healing Mercy Unveiled: Honoring the Sisters of Mercy as Mercy General Hospital Celebrates 100 Years of Health Care in Sacramento
This fall, Mercy Foundation, in partnership with Mercy General Hospital and in recognition of their centennial anniversary, proudly unveiled a magnificent new bas-relief sculpture, Healing Mercy: Generation to Generation. This permanent artwork is a profound tribute to the Sisters of Mercy’s extraordinary legacy of compassionate health care in the Greater Sacramento community.
A distinguished gathering of philanthropic donors, hospital leadership and staff, and many cherished local Sisters of Mercy were present for the unveiling. The atmosphere was one of heartfelt gratitude and reflection, celebrating the unwavering commitment that has shaped our community’s health for generations.

An Artistic Tribute to Care
Crafted by talented artist Ruth Coelho, Healing Mercy: Generation to Generation beautifully encapsulates the Sisters of Mercy’s pioneering spirit. From their arrival in Sacramento in 1857—answering the urgent call of a burgeoning Gold Rush population— the Sisters established the very foundations of local health care,

tending to the poor and sick with selfless dedication. The sculpture serves as a lasting tribute to their extraordinary contributions and enduring mission.
This significant artwork was made possible through generous lead gifts from The Frank Marre Family and Una Berrigan and her late husband, Michael. Their thoughtful support ensures this powerful reminder of
Mercy’s heritage will inspire future generations.
We invite you to experience this impactful sculpture in person, now on permanent display in the Mercy General Hospital lobby located in the Alex G. Spanos Heart & Vascular Center.
The Heart of the Hospital: A Story Told in Bronze
The sculpture, Healing Mercy: Generation to Generation, offers a powerful visual narrative of Mercy General Hospital’s rich history, tracing its journey to serve Sacramento’s sick and vulnerable since its opening on February 11, 1925. It beautifully embodies the spirit that led the community to affectionately refer to the hospital as “The Sisters Hospital.”
Inspired by Foundress Catherine McAuley, the Sisters’ mission is rooted in hospitality, collaboration, compassion, inclusivity, kindness, and respect for each individual. The artwork’s figures depict this mission and the history of the hospital, showcasing key supporters: Sisters of Mercy, who founded the hospital in 1925; a Mercy Guild member; and members of the civic community, who were instrumental in its 1954 expansion. The sculpture also honors the dedication of physicians and nurses, embodying Mercy General’s enduring commitment to inclusive, compassionate healing for all, and invites future generations to continue this vital work.
This remarkable sculpture stands not just as a work of art, but as a living narrative—a daily reminder of the Sisters of Mercy’s unwavering dedication which continues to flourish today. It honors our past, celebrates our present, and inspires our future in healing.
A Century of Care: Mercy General Hospital’s Enduring Legacy
This year, Mercy General Hospital, founded by the Sisters of Mercy as Mater Misericordiae Hospital in 1925, is proudly celebrating its centennial—a remarkable journey of dedication, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment to the health and wellbeing of Sacramento residents. The Sisters’ vision, with the support of the community, established a heritage of high quality, compassionate health care that continues to thrive today. Now a modern center of excellence, Mercy General remains deeply rooted in its founding mission of service, innovation, and community partnership, and is poised to serve the region for another century.

100 Years of Babies: Celebrating Life, Legacy,
and Sister Kathleen’s Enduring Spirit
This summer, Mercy Foundation partnered with Mercy General Hospital to joyously host a 100 Years of Babies celebration, marking a century of bringing new life to the community. The heartwarming event, held in the beautiful Walter C. and Agnes V. Anderson Healing Garden, honored a century of births at the hospital.
Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, we were proud to announce that the hospital’s Family Birth Center will be named the Sister Kathleen Horgan, RSM, Family Birth Center. This honor follows more than $500,000 in gifts from her long-time friends and supporters, launching an initiative to fund essential cosmetic and equipment upgrades for the Center. More than just a name, this tribute ensures her enduring spirit of caring continues to inspire future health care professionals. It commemorates her exceptional service, leadership, and unwavering compassion for our community, all while providing new families with the best possible start.
Sr. Kathleen Horgan, RSM
Sister Kathleen arrived in Auburn, California as a novice from County Cork, Ireland and immediately began sharing the Mercy mission in our greater Sacramento community. She started her career in education in 1957, teaching and serving as principal at several local Catholic schools.
After her remarkable 34 years in education, she answered a new calling, serving at Mercy General Hospital from 1992-2024, first as the Director of Mission Services, and later as a dedicated volunteer where she greeted everyone with a warm smile.
Sister Kathleen’s unwavering commitment to nurturing and supporting our community touched countless lives and we are fortunate to have shared the treasured heritage of her ministry.

Tax-Smart Giving Strategies for a Greater Impact in 2026
We are grateful for generous donors like you, who have partnered with Mercy Foundation to create an astounding impact on our community.
In recent years, we’ve observed a growing trend: donors are exploring new ways to maximize their charitable impact while optimizing their financial strategies. More and more people are discovering the benefits of tax-smart giving, and we want to ensure you have the information you need to make informed decisions.
In addition to making cash gifts, consider these three tax-advantaged giving methods that can potentially save you money while supporting Mercy Foundation’s vital mission:
Stock Gifts
By donating appreciated stocks, you can provide substantial support to Mercy Foundation and potentially avoid capital gains taxes. You will receive a charitable deduction based on the market value of the donated stock on the day the transfer was made.
Donor-Advised Funds
More and more people are working with their financial advisors to set up a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), which can serve as your own charitable savings account. You will earn immediate tax benefits when you make charitable contributions to the fund and then recommend grants to nonprofits like Mercy Foundation.
Qualified Charitable Distribution
Plan for the Future with FreeWill
Our partnership with FreeWill also provides you with a valuable tool to create a will or living trust, and you can include Mercy Foundation as a beneficiary. This secure online platform allows you to create or update your estate plan at no cost in under 20 minutes—helping you protect the people, communities and causes you care about.
Scan the QR code or visit mercyfoundation.mygiftlegacy.org
If you are age 70½ or older, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows you to directly transfer funds from your IRA to a qualified nonprofit like ours. For those who are 73 or older, this distribution can count towards all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year, and the transferred amount is excluded from your taxable income.
To help you explore these options, we’re pleased to offer a new, free resource through our partnership with FreeWill. This secure online platform guides you through the tax benefits of each giving method and allows you to initiate your gift in just a few minutes.

Celebrating Our Champions: An Evening of Gratitude and Impact
We recently hosted our annual McAuley & Legacy Societies Celebration, a heartfelt evening dedicated to recognizing the extraordinary generosity of our donor family. A highlight of the celebration was honoring members of our McAuley Society (those who have made cumulative lifetime gifts of $25,000 or more) and our Legacy Society (individuals who have thoughtfully included Mercy Foundation in their estate plans).
The event was a warm and vibrant testament to community partnership, bringing together valued donors, Board members, leaders from our Sacramento Market hospitals and clinics, and local Sisters of Mercy. Together, we acknowledged the profound impact of our donors, who support vital health care services and essential programs for the poor, elderly, and most vulnerable in our community. The evening also featured a compelling video of appreciation for your partnership in advancing the Sisters of Mercy mission.
For highlights from the celebration, including photos and videos, please visit supportmercyfoundation.org/ mcauley-legacy-societies-2025

The Jacksons: Reflecting the Enduring Spirit of Mercy
At this year’s McAuley & Legacy Societies Celebration, we were honored to present the Inspiring Philanthropy Award to Lynda and John Jackson, Jr. This award recognizes their truly exceptional and inspirational support of our mission.
Since 2006, Lynda and John Jackson have quietly and powerfully championed the shared mission of the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Foundation. Their extraordinary generosity has impacted nearly every corner of our work, including support for the Motherhouse in Auburn, Cristo Rey High School Sacramento, the Sisters of Mercy Catholic Schools Endowment, the Medical Safe Haven at Dignity Health Methodist Hospital, Mercy McMahon Terrace, the Sister Kathleen Horgan, RSM, Family Birth Center at Mercy General Hospital, and many more.
Lynda and John, your kindness is a beacon of hope, touching lives daily and inspiring us all. Thank you for your leadership, compassion, and extraordinary generosity.

Teeing Off for a Brighter Future: Annual Golf Tournaments Deliver Big Impact!
This fall, our community rallied together, clubs in hand, to support two incredible causes through annual golf tournaments.
Thanks to the dedication and generosity of our partners, the events were memorable and will have a lasting impact on countless lives.
Mercy Medical Group’s 11th Annual Golf Tournament
This event, held September 13, raised funds for Dr. Gregory Cooper Legacy Scholarships, empowering economically disadvantaged students from Grant and Cristo Rey High Schools to pursue higher education. More than $300,000 has been raised for our supported ministries through Mercy Medical Group’s tournaments.
On October 6, this long-standing tournament continued its support for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mercy San Juan Medical Center. Nearly $400,000 over the tournaments 19-year history. Lawson Mechanical’s dedication to our most vulnerable is truly inspiring.
To every sponsor, donor, and golfer who hit the links: your enthusiasm and generosity are at the heart of these successes!

A Special Celebration at Mercy McMahon Terrace:
A New Chapel for Reflection and Community
Mercy Foundation recently cohosted a special celebration at Mercy McMahon Terrace, a cherished home for thousands of Sacramento area seniors over the years. This event marked a significant milestone for its current residents and the broader community. The event included a Holy Mass and Solemn Blessing of the new Kenney-Flynn Family Chapel, a beautiful space made possible in large part by the generosity of Bill and Stephanie Kenney. This gift, given in loving memory of former Mercy McMahon Terrace residents Kathryn Kenney, Monica Flynn, and Robert Kenney, ensures a lasting legacy for spiritual comfort and reflection. We are also deeply grateful to Joanna Johnson, Bill and Nina Iliff, Margaret and James Hearn, and others in our community whose generosity supported this important refresh.
The solemn Mass was officiated by the Most Reverend Rey Bersabal, Auxiliary Bishop of Sacramento, adding a profound and heartfelt dimension to the occasion. It was a day filled with gratitude, marking a wonderful new chapter for all who call Mercy McMahon Terrace home.
The Chapel is a central hub for faith and fellowship and a vibrant space where Mass is offered three times a week, and where residents gather for weekly Rosary. The recent refresh transformed the Chapel and included a new altar and furnishings, upgraded windows, and modern lighting and sound.
This newly blessed Kenney-Flynn Family Chapel now stands as a testament to enduring faith, ready to serve as a source of peace, reflection, and spiritual nourishment for all who walk through its doors.
McAuley Society
The McAuley Society honors donors who have contributed lifetime cumulative gifts of $25,000 or more. The society is named for Sisters of Mercy Foundress Catherine McAuley, who nearly 200 years ago opened a house of Mercy for underserved women and children in Dublin, Ireland.
