CONTINUING THE MISSION CAMPAIGN In 1857, a small group of Sisters of Mercy made their journey from San Francisco by riverboat to Sacramento—and arrived with boundless courage and determination. Ever ready to serve their mission of Mercy, they were called to begin a community in Sacramento to meet the urgent needs created by a booming Gold Rush population—thousands of immigrant men and women eager to make a fresh start and make the new city of Sacramento their home. And so, the Sisters began their local health care and education ministries, compassionately tending to the poor, sick, and uneducated with the very best care. Now, to ensure our shared mission continues well into the future, Mercy Foundation is excited to announce a new campaign: Continuing the Mission. Through this new campaign, together we will continue to meet the needs of the underserved in our communities by supporting initiatives such as the Angel Continued on page 2

WANT TO CHANGE THE FUTURE?

Care Program, which provides assistance for women and men experiencing cancer; the Medical Safe Haven, which provides a safe, primary care environment for survivors of human trafficking and their children; Cristo Rey High School Sacramento, which provides a Catholic, college preparatory education for local students with limited financial means; and many, many more. The Continuing the Mission campaign will create an endowment that will help continue the works of Mercy and be used in alignment with the Mercy Mission— feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, educating the under-resourced, and caring for the sick—for years to come. This campaign is truly a recognition and celebration of all who have partnered with the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Foundation and are a part of our rich heritage of service to the Sacramento area. Together, we will continue to make the Mercy mission real in our hospitals, schools, outreach ministries and our community.

Grateful Daughter Raising Support for Mercy General Hospital’s Cardiac Care Unit In 2017, Ashlyn Duran’s father suffered a cardiac event and was helped by the excellent, compassionate caregivers of Mercy General Hospital. She shared, “He received the BEST possible care my family could have ever asked for. By the grace of God and incredible surgeons, nurses, and more, he made it out alive and is still living his best life today.” To honor her dad, a former marathon runner, Ashlyn will be participating in December’s California International Marathon and is raising funds for the hospital’s Cardiac Care Unit. Mercy Foundation is deeply grateful for Ashlyn’s generosity and will be cheering her on as she achieves her goal while helping others. Local Golf Tournaments Raise Support for Those in Need Golfers recently enjoyed two lovely days on the course at tournaments held to benefit Mercy Foundation supported ministries. In September, Mercy Medical Group held its ninth annual golf tournament, with proceeds benefiting Cristo Rey High School Sacramento, Sacramento Loaves & Fishes, Dr. Gregory Cooper Legacy Scholarships, and the Human Trafficking Medical Safe Haven. Over the last nine years, the

Celebrating Steve and Grace Thomas for their Generosity At our recent McAuley & Legacy Societies Celebration, we were pleased to honor Steve and Grace Thomas as $1 million level McAuley Society members. The Thomases joined the Mercy Foundation family over 32 years ago–and we are deeply grateful to have known their steadfast friendship and support throughout these years. Steve began serving on the Mercy Foundation Board of Directors in the early 1980s, and also filled the important role of Board Chair in 1986. During this pivotal time, Steve was instrumental in

helping the Foundation integrate all of the local works of Mercy under the umbrella of Mercy Foundation—and generously gave his time, energy, and incredible leadership. Steve shared with us, “God has blessed us with our association with the Sisters of Mercy. By giving to the Sisters, you become a part of them, and when you contribute to the Mercy mission, you get kindness and Mercy back tenfold.”

You Helped Local Children Learn and Grow at Camp Mercy This past summer, 105 local children experienced the joy of Camp Mercy thanks to the generosity of community and employee donors. Over $20,000 was raised, which provided campers with supplies for arts and crafts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) learning, physical activity, games, snacks, and more. Fun was had by all and according to Mia, Resident Service Coordinator, “A very quiet youth excelled this year, becoming a leader and role model to other campers. The smallest light shined the brightest!” Mercy Foundation is very grateful for donors like you, who helped make this engaging and educational experience possible for youth residing at Mercy Housing properties, which provide an affordable living opportunity for low-income families in our community.
