President’s Message The holidays are upon us, and we at Mercy Foundation hope you are feeling an abundance of joy and peace during this special season. Whether you are baking treats for neighbors, mailing Christmas greetings to friends far and wide, or gathering with family to share honored traditions, during this wonderful time of year we extend our deepest gratitude for the good you do for our community every day.
Sister Michelle Gorman, RSM
Bringing the Spirit of Mercy to Our Community Sister Michelle Gorman, RSM, shares her story of service, compassion, and leadership as a Sister of Mercy Fifty years ago, after a long journey traveling from her home in County Mayo, Ireland, Sister Michelle Gorman, RSM, arrived at Mercy Convent, Auburn at midnight. Brimming with hope and excitement and just 19 years old, she was ready and eager to continue her commitment to religious life, started one year earlier. Feeling “awestruck at the adventure awaiting,” Sister Michelle’s life in Auburn became busy and active very quickly. Within a week she was juggling work as a teacher’s aide at Our Lady of Fatima School in St. Joseph’s Parish while also studying scripture, exploring life in community, and joyfully reflecting in prayer and contemplation. Within the year, she also began college classes, first at Sierra College, later at Dominican College in San Rafael, and eventually earned her Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and French, and a lifetime teaching credential from California State University, Sacramento. Sister Michelle spent 15 years teaching, beginning at Holy Spirit Elementary School, Continued on page 2
Through your generous giving to Mercy Foundation, you continue to advance the important mission established by the Sisters of Mercy over 190 years ago: feeding the poor, educating the underserved and caring for the sick. Your gifts provide warmth, compassion, and light to the most vulnerable among us. Thank you for keeping the spirit of Mercy alive in our community throughout the year. Wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year,
Kevin B. Duggan President & CEO

and later serving at Bishop Manogue High School and Christian Brothers High School. When reflecting on her time in the classroom, she recalls it with great affection. “I really enjoyed it, and tried to inspire the students to embrace Mercy in our world. I keep up with many of them on Facebook and go to many of the reunions. That was a really important phase of my life—the students educated me on American culture, including the music of U2, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, and many more!” Sister Michelle’s love of lifelong learning returned her to academia to earn a Master of Arts in English and American literature from Gonzaga University, in Spokane, Washington, after which she answered the call to begin as a Vocation Minister, a role in which she ably and enthusiastically served for nine years. She describes vocation ministry as, “helping other women discover where the Spirit of God is leading them.” She worked with women throughout Northern California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana (which she calls her favorite place in all the world), and she says, “One of the things I enjoyed the most was serving with a group of sisters from Burlingame, Cedar Rapids, Chicago, Detroit, Omaha, St. Louis, and Cincinnati, and working together.” With Sister Michelle’s natural and strong leadership skills, she was elected to the leadership teams of the Auburn Regional Community in 2004, and the newly merged West Midwest Community headquartered 2
in Omaha, Nebraska, in 2008, where she spent five years. Though behind the scenes, this diligent and dedicated administrative work had a very clear goal that Sister Michelle describes as, “to support and help each of the Sisters of Mercy focus and serve her ministry, whether that was caring for the sick, the poor, or the uneducated.” During this time, Sister Michelle continued pursuing her own growth and learning, earning a diploma in spiritual direction at the Shalem Spiritual Guidance Program in Bethesda, Maryland, and studying Spanish at the Cultural Institute of Oaxaca, Mexico. After returning to Sacramento in 2015, she began serving in both spiritual direction and retreat work at Mercy Center Auburn, as California State Senate Chaplain, and as a Corporate Member of Cristo Rey High School Sacramento and Mercy Foundation. Expressing her gratitude for Mercy Foundation donors, who partner in furthering the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, she says “The Sisters in Auburn and I pray daily for you with appreciation and love and we are honored indeed to work with you.” Recently, Sister Michelle began her newest ministry, serving as one of fourteen Institute Ministers for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, which includes over 2,000 sisters in North, South and Central America, the Caribbean, Guam, and the Philippines. Her role sees her assisting with leadership and the spiritual guidance of the community, and creating increased unity and connection within the
sisters striving to make a difference in the lives of those in need. She shares, “Zoom has really been a gift! I’ve been able to meet with sisters from all over that I didn’t know before, listen to them, hear what is happening throughout our community, and help guide how we move into the future.”
Sr. Michelle upon graduation from CSU, Sacramento in 1977. Looking back over her 50 years since arriving in the Sacramento area and what Mercy means to her, she says, “The motto that’s on my ring says ‘God’s mercy remains faithful from age to age.’ I think every Sister of Mercy has experienced that mercy of God and we want to pass that onto people who are in need of love and care. Mercy is compassion. Mercy is presence to those who are in need. Mercy is God’s overflowing love into the world.” Thank you, Sister Michelle, for your dedication and commitment to our community. From that fateful midnight arrival in 1971, you began a life of incredible service, marked by an extraordinary breadth in ministries, travel, and educational achievement— all in dedication to the mission of the Sisters of Mercy.
A Story Shared with Us from the Medical Safe Haven For someone “in the life” of human trafficking, the dream of safety and independence seems unattainable. But since our inception, we’ve been blessed to watch our patients achieve this goal—and though their individual journeys may vary, with your philanthropic support, each victim can find a path to healing and recovery and become a survivor. When we first met “Hope,” she was skeptical of the health care system. Like so many victims of human trafficking, she expected caregivers to be judgmental and dismissive. Lacking
a primary care physician, she turned to emergency rooms and urgent care centers for needed treatment. And during those visits—where she had interactions with social workers, nurses, and other medical personnel—she felt misunderstood and overlooked. At her first appointment at the Medical Safe Haven, her doctor moved carefully and compassionately, and, finally, she felt heard.
community; she was recently appointed to an advisory committee guiding a Sacramento County research project on sex trafficking and contributes her important voice and perspective to help others. Still a patient of the Medical Safe Haven, she’s also a small business owner, a part-time employee of a local non-profit, and a dedicated student pursuing her degree. And she’s getting married soon!
It’s been three years since “Hope” walked in our doors, and today she is thriving as a successful, healthy young woman. Because of the trust built with the Medical Safe Haven, “Hope” is now taking the passion she has for this program model and advising other agencies in the
With your support of the Medical Safe Haven, together, we are changing lives and helping others in our community on a powerful and inspiring journey to healing and success. *Survivor name changed to protect privacy
How You Can Help Join the Fight Against Human Trafficking January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and Dignity Health, the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Foundation are deeply committed to helping human trafficking victims become survivors by connecting them with vital medical and behavioral health resources. Your generous support allows the Medical Safe Haven at our local Mercy Family Health Center to serve hundreds of victims, and compassionately help them navigate out of trafficking and begin to heal and rebuild. Thank you for your support of this important initiative, which provides important services to victims in need. 3

Providing Support for Sacramento’s Homeless
Each morning, Mercy Pedalers volunteers stock their tricycles with water and supplies, and ride with purpose and love into Sacramento neighborhoods to serve and care for our brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness. By offering a beverage, saying someone’s name, and connecting with conversation and recognition, pedalers give hope and dignity to those feeling cold, hungry, and vulnerable. This winter, thanks to the generosity of the community and to Mercy Foundation donors like you, your gifts are helping Mercy Pedalers launch an innovative new pilot program, the Sleeping Bag Exchange. Created by a Christian Brothers High School student, pedalers will distribute sleeping bags and collect them once used, replacing them with ones that are clean and dry; the collected sleeping bags will then be cleaned and re-distributed—a beautiful circle of reuse and recycling. We are grateful for your dedication to this wonderful ministry, which helps volunteers build relationships with those living on the streets and connect them to the resources they need for their health and well-being.
You Helped Someone in Need Receiving Cancer Treatment The recent inaugural CommonSpirit Health Concert for Humankindness, held earlier this fall, was an exciting celebration of you, our donors, and our heroic health care workers. Locally, Mercy Foundation raised support for the Angel Care Fund, enabling nurse navigators to help women and men in our area with limited resources who are experiencing cancer, and providing assistance with the medical care and support they deserve. We’re happy to report that Mercy Foundation raised nearly $10,000, 4

ensuring that particularly vulnerable cancer patients are able to continue treatment, afford necessary medication, stay in stable housing, and more. Your support will help with transportation vouchers, copays, or other expenses that patients with limited resources may need to ease their cancer journey.
As an Oncology Nurse Navigator, Cindy Sucevich, RN, offers support with humankindness to our cancer patients.
Thank you to all of our donors and to the event’s generous sponsors— Genentech, Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, Gil and Kay Albiani, Western Health Advantage, and Divin Construction. You made a meaningful difference to someone in need receiving cancer treatment.

Your Free Will-Planning Tool No matter how young or old you are, creating your will is crucial to supporting your loved ones and at the same time ensuring that your values live on through organizations you care about. As a service to valued donors like you, Mercy Foundation has partnered with FreeWill.com: a free, online tool that allows you to create a legally valid will or living trust at no cost in under 20 minutes, or to easily gather information you’ll need should you choose to work with an attorney.
Just as you have been there to support the future of Mercy Foundation’s ministries, we want to help you get your plans in order and care for the future of your loved ones. You will also have the opportunity to include a legacy gift to Mercy Foundation when creating your will—a powerful and enduring way to continue the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, and help feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, educate the underserved, and care for the sick at local Dignity Health hospitals and clinics. If you have included Mercy Foundation in your estate plan, please let us know so we may thank you and recognize you as a member of our Legacy Society.
Annual Golf Tournament Benefits Mercy San Juan Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Longtime donor and Dignity Health employee Ranae Forbes recently used the FreeWill tool to create her estate plan, and says she now feels a great sense of peace, knowing that structure is in place for her family. Ranae says, “I had been thinking for years that it was time to complete a will, but kept putting it off. Tomorrow, I would think. I’ll do this tomorrow. I immediately created my estate plan when I received an email from Mercy Foundation offering the free service, and the peace of mind I now have is amazing! Thank you!” When creating her will, Ranae included a bequest to Mercy Foundation in honor of her aunt, who is a religious Sister. “I’ve been really touched by how the Sisters of Mercy have helped our community over the years, and I wanted to do something to reciprocate.” We deeply appreciate your generosity, Ranae—your gift is a fitting tribute to your family!
On October 4, Lawson Mechanical held its 15th annual golf tournament to benefit our tiniest, most fragile patients and a check was presented to Mercy Foundation for last year’s proceeds totaling $22,000. Thank you, Lawson Mechanical, for raising over $320,000 over the last 14 years to benefit babies in need at Mercy San Juan Medical Center’s NICU.
If you have questions about using this simple tool to create your will or would like to learn about making an estate gift that will benefit you in your lifetime, please contact Kevin Duggan at kevin.duggan@ dignityhealth.org or (916) 851-2703. 5
