Inspiring philanthropy. Changing lives. supportmercyfoundation.org
President’s Message The dedication and service of the Sisters of Mercy inspire us every day to care for those in need. Thank you for playing an important role in keeping their mission of compassion alive and present throughout our community.
Thank You for Your Compassion Toward Those in Mental Health Crisis On July 9, Mercy San Juan Medical Center held a dedication and blessing of a new Behavioral Health Crisis Services Collaborative unit. This innovative center represents a new model of compassionate, highly effective behavioral health crisis stabilization care for patients who come in through the Emergency Department or self-refer for emergency psychiatric treatment. Mercy Foundation was proud to partner with Mercy San Juan Medical Center to raise funds to help establish this amazing resource. Thanks to donors like you, the unit is now available to serve one of the most stigmatized and vulnerable patient populations: those experiencing mental health crisis. “In 1857, the Sisters of Mercy came to Sacramento to meet the community’s need for health care. And it is with that spirit that this center will continue that outreach to meet these needs,” said Michael Korpiel, president of Mercy San Juan Medical Center. Continued on page 2
In this edition of Horizons, we highlight the new Behavioral Health Crisis Services Collaborative unit at Mercy San Juan Medical Center, made possible by your remarkable generosity to help those experiencing mental health crisis. This innovative model is a perfect example of how the mission and values of the Sisters of Mercy continue meeting the changing and most pressing needs of our community. I hope you enjoy reading about Sister Cornelius O’Connor, RSM, who has dedicated her career to our health care ministry, particularly in her leadership role with Mercy Home Health and Continued on page 5

Unlike busy emergency departments, the crisis stabilization unit offers a quiet, homelike environment ideally suited to support those experiencing a behavioral health crisis. Patients have access to a specialized care team, as well as a resource center that utilizes best practices for coordinating care after discharge—whether that’s with the support of friends or family, or a referral to an in-patient treatment center. The crisis stabilization unit is already positively impacting those in our community who are in need of behavioral health support, as well as improving the experience for other patients seeking care in the emergency department. “Mercy Foundation and the Sisters of Mercy are deeply grateful to every person who stepped forward to help make this center a reality,” said Kevin Duggan, president and CEO of Mercy Foundation. “You are making a real difference in the lives of those who need this care and their families. Together we are creating a more supportive and compassionate community for those who struggle with mental health concerns.”

Loyal Donor Leaves Gift for the Future Long-time donor, Vivian Buletti, passed away last year and left a generous legacy gift to Mercy Foundation. She gifted a total of nearly $430,000 to benefit the Sisters of Mercy in Auburn, Cristo Rey High School Sacramento, and the Area of Greatest Need at Mercy Foundation. We are honored to be part of her legacy of giving, which spanned many decades and truly demonstrated her spirit of compassion for those in need. Vivian was born and raised in Sacramento and worked as a manager in the business office of Pacific Bell. She was a dedicated volunteer with the Mercy General Hospital Guild, as well as the American Red Cross. She never passed a person in need without offering help of some kind. She was a loyal donor to Mercy Foundation beginning in 1995 and was an honored as a member of both the McAuley and Legacy Societies.
Vivian Bulleti (1935 -2018), inspired philanthropy and changed lives.
Vivian will be dearly missed by her many friends and especially her neighbors who regarded her as the “mayor” of the block. Mercy Foundation is deeply grateful to Vivian for continuing her outstanding commitment to helping those in need with her legacy gift. Her steadfast support for the mission of the Sisters of Mercy will mean her passion for helping others will live on, improving hundreds of lives for years to come.
WANT TO CHANGE THE FUTURE?
Do you want to make a significant gift that will advance the mission of the Sisters of Mercy for generations to come? You can do it today—with a legacy gift to Mercy Foundation through your will or trust. • Costs you nothing during your lifetime • Preserves your savings and cash flow • Can be changed or revoked as needed • Allows you to be far more generous than you ever thought possible • Easy to arrange

A Mission of Compassion
Sister Cornelius O’Connor, RSM Reflects on a Life of Service to our Health Care Ministry Sitting in her cozy home in Folsom a few weeks after her retirement, Sister Mary Cornelius O’Connor, RSM reflects back on what first called her to leave her home in Ireland and become a Sister of Mercy in California: the opportunity to serve in our health care ministry. “There were 20 young women in my graduating class in high school, and 10 of us chose to go into religious life,” she recounts. Sr. Cornelius was introduced to the Sisters of Mercy in Auburn because they had a recruitment center in her home town. “Many of my classmates were going on missions around the world and I thought California would be a good place for me.” Just five years after her older sister joined the Sisters of Mercy, Sr. Cornelius left her home in Ireland to begin her novitiate in California. She attended nursing school at Sacramento City College and graduated in 1965. “After school, I started out as a staff nurse at Mercy General Hospital in various departments, including the Intensive Care Unit and also served as an IV therapist,” she remembers. “My heart was always in nursing.” 4
For over 50 years, Sister Cornelius O’Connor, RSM has provided compassionate care to patients within our health care ministry and the community.
After working several more years in the Operating Room at Mercy San Juan Medical Center, she returned to school to get a Master’s degree in social work. With her new degree and a passion for helping others, she was the perfect person to take over management of the hospice program, which at the time was a no-fee service based out of Mercy General Hospital. “We had 20 volunteers and coordinators, and a Chief Medical Officer. My role was to help ensure that everything was running smoothly and that we were giving very good quality care.” Sr. Cornelius was entrusted with the process of leading the hospice program and merging it with a
home health program based out of Mercy San Juan Medical Center. The resulting program, Mercy Home Health and Hospice, continues to serve families in our community to this day. It is a crucially important resource for those who need support during their last days, and also offers expanded care for those who require home health services following surgery or an illness. Sr. Cornelius’ dedication to the mission of compassion helped create a solid foundation on which Mercy Hospice has expanded to serve the Greater Sacramento Area today. In the 1980’s, a position became available at Mercy Hospital of Folsom for a Vice President of Mission Integration and Sr. Cornelius seized the opportunity. “Although
Mercy Hospital of Folsom serves a relatively affluent area, there are still people here who are in need,” Sister explained. She felt called to minister to the patients and staff at the hospital and to bring the mission of the Sisters of Mercy to those who were in need of compassion and help, both within the hospital and the wider community.
calling. “I will be 80 this year and I am now in a period of discernment,” she explained. She will travel to Ireland to see her family and spend time in quiet reflection before deciding what the coming stage of her life will be.

Hospice and as the Vice President of Mission Integration at Mercy Hospital of Folsom. We are so fortunate to have benefitted from her compassionate care and service over the years. This issue of Horizons recognizes donors who are members of the McAuley and/or Legacy Societies. The McAuley Society honors donors who have made lifetime cumulative gifts of $25,000 or more. The Legacy Society celebrates those who have included Mercy Foundation in their estate plans. These donors, and each and every member of our Mercy Foundation family make our work possible. “Where there is need, there is mercy”—for more than 65 years, generous friends like you have ensured that this has remained true. Thank you for your commitment and dedication to making mercy real in our community. You are making a difference. Sincerely,

13th Annual Lawson Mechanical Golf Tournament Benefits Mercy San Juan Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
From Left: Kevin Duggan, Michael Korpiel, Mel Bennett, David Lawson, and Dr. Robert Kahle
On October 7, Lawson Mechanical held its 13th annual golf tournament to benefit our tiniest, most fragile patients. A full slate of golfers enjoyed a lovely day of golf and festivities at Del Paso Country Club. A check was presented to Mercy Foundation for last year’s proceeds totaling $23,000, which will be used to purchase five fetal monitors. Over the last 12 years, Lawson Mechanical has raised over $275,000 to benefit babies in need at Mercy San Juan Medical Center’s NICU. We are sincerely grateful for your support!
