Message from the Principal Each year, our students return from the summer holidays to a new year of learning. This year, the return was staggered, with all students now using the excellent learning environment we provide on campus. Our collective resilience has again been demonstrated with our diverse group of experienced teachers readily adjusting their instruction to meet onsite and online learning, and our adaptive students and families ever supportive. As we have since early 2020, we will continue to adapt to the COVID-19 protocols for school settings to keep our community safe. Our shared focus as a College community remains on providing today’s students with wide ranging opportunities to learn in and beyond our classrooms, form friendships and be exposed to a breadth of experiences, all the while as we continue investing to meet the needs of tomorrow. This year, supplementing our existing suite of facilities, construction of our new Arts and Sports Precinct will start. This project is being realised after many years of consideration, and follows approval of our Master Plan in December 2020, and development of Stage One by our lead architect, JPE Design Studio, in April 2021. Using a collaborative design approach, our new Arts and Sports Precinct will come to life. These purpose-built spaces for sport, the performing arts, and greater community connection provide the opportunity for our community – College Council, staff, students, parents and caregivers, Mercedes Parents and Friends Association, Mercedes Old Scholars’ Association, Mercureans and friends – to contribute, including philanthropically through our Annual Giving Programme. These spaces will be used by thousands of students in the decades ahead for learning, experiencing the arts and playing sport as they create memories at Mercedes College. Our infrastructure focus is aligned with our five enabling strategic goals that guide our priorities, investment and initiatives. In short these will see us continue to deliver an ever-better world class education for our students, underpinned by high expectations, and quality relationships, reflective of our Mercy Keys and traditions. Our Strategic Plan 2021-2025 deliberately encourages active participation from across our community so that together we build on our strong foundations to help our students flourish and position the College for continued excellence.

In farewelling colleagues in late 2021, and welcoming more than 20 new staff this year, we are reminded that we’re all stewards for a time, and contributors to the evolution of Mercedes College. Many people help shape the learning and experiences of the students who proudly graduate from Mercedes College, none less so than the highly respected and much-loved Alessandra Miles (see page 16). A timely reflection, given 2022 is when we focus on our Mercy Key of Loyalty: affirming the Mercy spirit, supporting, and promoting the College and its activities, as well as each other, plus seeking ways of being of service more widely. The perfect Key in a year of change, challenge, and achievement. As a values-centred International Baccalaureate R-12 Catholic College we proudly support each student to develop academically, socially and personally, enabling each to confidently take their place in the world. This has never been more evident than the achievements of the Class of 2021. 157 students graduated in 2021, 20 per cent achieving an ATAR of 95 or more, 36 per cent an ATAR of 90 or higher, and 59 per cent an ATAR of 80 or better. All students seeking a tertiary placement achieved first round university offers and 73 per cent achieved their first preference with a majority studying in the fields of Health / Medicine / Physiotherapy / Veterinary Science / Law / International Studies / Politics and Commerce / Business.

In addition, 35 of our students developed valuable skills by pursuing Vocational Education and Training in wide ranging fields including Applied Fashion Design and Technology, Aviation, Design Fundamentals, Electronic Music Production and Performance, and Rural Operations (Animal Husbandry). Three students completed a school-based apprenticeship (Automotive Electrical, Butchery and Electrical) incorporating learning beyond the school curriculum and we commend those students for their commitment and significant achievement to combine working as many as three days per week – including during the school holidays – with completing the SACE requirements. May the Class of 2021’s achievements shine a light of encouragement for the students who follow them. May they remind us about the imperative of continuing to develop our curriculum delivery, progressive wellbeing programmes and breadth of opportunities that students recall long after graduating – school camps, reflection days and major events like our annual Athletics and Swimming Carnivals. May each student continue to embrace learning and understand who they are as open-minded citizens who positively contribute to a just society as they ready themselves to take their place in the world. Andrew Balkwill Principal

Congratulations to Olenka Smolicz our College Dux, Anna Nixon and Alana Spirou our joint 2021 IB Diploma Duces – academic achievements to be exceptionally proud of.

Chair College Council To our new and existing families, welcome to a new school year. This is an exciting time to be at Mercedes College as we build for the future. 2022 shapes up to be a year, where as a college community we will need to show agility and reliance as we manage our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The College leadership must be commended for the excellent and tireless work that has been done to ensure the well being of staff and students.

Mercedes College is focussed on ensuring that it excels and remains at the forefront of Catholic education, and as such has made many positive changes in the last two years. This will revitalise our operating model to enable long term sustainability. In the words of Catherine McAuley, “The simplest and most practical lesson I know is to be good today, but better tomorrow,” this applies to the College and its community. The 10-year financial and masterplan starts this year, with the first key project our Arts and Sports Precinct. This project has become a reality, and I would like to acknowledge the constructive work between Catholic Education SA and Mercedes College, and more importantly the perseverance of our College leadership to see this realised. Learning and wellbeing are a cornerstone of our College and heavily linked to projects within the strategic plan. The academic results continue to improve significantly on prior years as we shape our learning experience to produce confident, ethical and successful global citizens ready to address the challenges of their time. Our industry leading wellbeing frameworks continue to nurture our students to flourish and reach their full potential. This is my second year as College Chair and I’m confident that the key strategic initiatives that have been put in place are gaining traction and in line with our guiding principles of Mercedes College. The council will continue its work on maintaining and improving the governance model, as it is important that we remain relevant and progressive. The other key emphasis of the Council is to provide support to the College leadership. The Council acknowledges the forward-looking work that Andrew Balkwill and his team have instigated and completed during the last two years. We have much to celebrate moving forward. Enjoy the year, promote the Mercy spirit and immerse yourselves into the community. Alf Ianniello Chair of College Council

From the Director of Mission This year we focus on our Mercy Key of Loyalty. Loyal en Tout, our motto “Loyal (to God) in all things” is an important value we live as a Mercedes College community. Inspired by our founders, the Mercy Sisters, the acts of service – social justice, care for each other and our faith – underly all that we do. Our liturgist, Mercy Sister Duyen Nguyen reminded staff ahead of the start of term, that before leaving this world, Jesus commands all of us “Love each other as I have loved you”. (John 13:34). Loyalty needs to go with love. A committed married couple cannot be fully loyal to each other without having love for each other. Our educators cannot fully commit themselves to teaching if they don’t love children or don’t love teaching. When we do things with love, we do it with passion, with joy and fulfilment. The College’s Mercy Keys are a great guide of how to live Mercy, and even with an unusual start to the year, the strength and loyalty of our community continues to shine through. While we look forward to being together as a school community to celebrate our Catholic services, we successfully celebrated our Ash Wednesday liturgy virtually, where we prayed for all in our community, and also for those in Ukraine. Our Year 11 students are now volunteering in the community each Monday afternoon, living the Mercy spirit for Community Service. Students are providing service in schools, kindies, libraries and councils. Many small works of Mercy are taking place, including students volunteering with local environmental groups further to guidance from Tom Robinson and his passion for conservation. Congratulations to Charlotte Sorrel, Isabelle Pena Negrette and Stella Tisato, our Social Justice leaders this year. I look forward to meeting together as a community in the coming months and continuing to empower our Mercedes College students to live their faith, the Mercy spirit and use their gifts to serve the world. Therese Wilson Director of Mission

Graduation Ball The Mercedes College Graduation Ball celebrates the culmination of effort applied over many years of learning. Our graduates are a product of years of work, guidance and support and for this reason, Mercedes College hosts an end of year graduation event which is as inclusive as it is magnificent. The celebration of achievement is shared with the families, special guests and key teachers, honouring the contribution and effort of many. On the evening of the last day of exams, our Year 12s arrived at the stunning reception held at the Adelaide Convention Centre as students, arm in arm with their families.

6

They left as the young adults of tomorrow, embarking on their pathways and exciting journeys yet to unfold beyond our College gates. The beautiful event, including a three-course dinner and traditional student parent dance, is a hallmark of celebration for our graduating cohort. As the Year 12 Year Level Coordinator, I am truly honoured to host this event. Thank you to our wonderful Mercedes College families and students for making the 2021 Graduation Ball a night to remember. “To the Graduating students – I want to congratulate each and every one of you for the contributions you have made to the College, the impact you’ve had on the Mercedes community and perhaps most importantly as we close this academic chapter; your undeniable achievements.

I have witnessed first-hand your dedication. I have seen you through your challenges and I have watched you all strive without hesitation in the pursuit of your goals. My work with you all has not just been a job, it’s been a privilege. Over three years of leading you as a cohort as your Year Level Coordinator, you have continued to remind me of the incredible capacity of the human spirit and that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. You have demonstrated that success relies on community, empathy and perseverance.” Holly Potter Year 12 Year Level Leader

International Student Programme Wishing our wonderful 2021 Year 12 International students the very best with their future Tertiary studies and acknowledging how hard it must be for them to not see their families for such a long time. All eight students have shown tremendous resilience and spirit. Some returned to their home countries of Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand or China, and others will remain in Australia to pursue further studies. Due to COVID-19, it has been a rollercoaster ride for our International Student Programme for the last two years. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel with new students studying at Mercedes College from this year. Promoting our International Student Programme continues overseas to encourage international students to consider studying here from Semester 2, 2022. Announcements from the Australian and South Australian Governments indicate that this is a reasonable expectation, and we intend to be front of mind as an Australian study option. Many of the Education Agents we work with are keen to forward enrolment applications, as the demand for schooling in Australia continues to grow. Mercedes College has also put forward proposals to Austrade in Japan and Thailand with the aim of securing group enrolments from those countries in 2022 and 2023. During 2021, we had at least 26 international students who studied with us on campus or online – the majority being face to face. Our students ranged from Years 7 – 12 and were from eight different countries including Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand. In 2022, we will have students from five countries, including Korea. This year we are honoured to have been nominated for the StudyTravel Secondary Schools Award, Australia and New Zealand – an award we were delighted to win last year, the first time an Australian school had done so. As our borders open, we look forward to welcoming more students from around the globe and again asserting Mercedes College as a market leader providing excellent outcomes as a values-centred International Baccalaureate Catholic College where we support every student to develop academically, socially and personally. Class of 2021 Results Our annual Laureate Assembly, usually held early in Term 1, celebrates the academic achievements of the graduating class. This year the celebration has been been postponed due to COVID restrictions relating to gatherings, so ahead of being with our Laureates here’s an insight to the achievements of the Class of 2021.

“Of note, is that one in every five Mercedes College students graduated in the top 5 per cent of Year 12s in Australia.”

2021 Laureates Across the Class of 2021, 59 students (38 per cent of the cohort) are acknowledged as ‘laureates’ having obtained Merits in one or more of their Year 12 subjects, or placing in the top 10 per cent of students nationally by gaining an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) of 90 or more. The distribution of ATARs shows that more than a third (36.2 per cent) of the 2021 cohort gained an ATAR of 90 or higher with an impressive19.7 per cent achieving an ATAR of 95 or higher. A near 60 per cent of students achieved an ATAR in the 80s. Of note, is that one in every five Mercedes College students graduated in the top 5 per cent of Year 12s in Australia. The ATAR is used by universities for entry into their courses. All students seeking a university pathway were given offers in the first round with 73 per cent receiving their first preference. The most common pathways for students were toward Medicine and allied Health professions with Law, Commerce and Engineering continuing to be popular. As we have seen in previous years, interest in the Behavioural Sciences and Arts continues to gain momentum. A total of 41 Merits were obtained across a wide variety of subjects in SACE and the IB Diploma Programme: • SACE Research Project B

• IB French B SL

• SACE English

• IB Indonesian B SL

• SACE Essential English

• IB Spanish ab initio SL

• SACE Visual Arts – Design

• IB Biology HL

• SACE Business Innovation

• IB Chemistry SL, HL

• SACE General Mathematics

• IB Mathematics AA SL

• SACE Outdoor Education

• IB Mathematics AI SL

• IB English B SL and HL In celebrating final ATARs, university offers and Merits with our laureates, we all know that achievement goes well beyond these measures. There have been many success stories involving students across a broad range of results and pathways who have achieved their own level of greatness while overcoming personal challenges, illnesses and other challenging circumstances. Most acknowledge that their achievements are a result of more than their own significant personal efforts, rather reflective of the extensive network of support around them. That is why at Mercedes College we thank parents and guardians who, as the first teachers, provide the foundation for learning and continue to offer support, security and guidance. Thank you to siblings and peers who have supported our graduates through the inevitable tough times and self-doubts, and to celebrate and encourage successes. To our teachers, from Reception to Year 12, together with the support staff, coaches, tutors, volunteers and many other people in the lives of our graduates who have and continue to contribute to shaping a learning community where learners are able to flourish, thank you. College Captains Starting last August, the process to become a 2022 College Captain was thorough, reflective and, at times, challenging. More than 15 per cent of the 2021 Year 11 cohort applied for these four positions, demonstrating just how many of our young people have valued the opportunity to be involved in aspects of student leadership throughout their time in our Middle or Senior School. These leadership opportunities may have been as class representatives, Sports or House Captains or perhaps as Middle School Leaders. A panel of nine students and staff greet applicants in the interview process which then progresses to a brief presentation to students and staff ahead of an election. From this process in 2021, Abigail Ranford, Amelie Finnimore, Eric Penna and Jack Braddy became our 2022 College Captains. Since their induction to the position, these young leaders have worked with their predecessors, the College and their peers to learn about the role. They have begun to actively fulfil their responsibilities as part of College Tours, welcoming new students and the all-important Senior Jumper process. These are not ceremonial positions, and the Captains have collectively committed to being a visible presence in our community throughout the year ahead – do not be surprised to see them at your next event or activity! In their leadership to date, Abigail, Amelie, Eric and Jack have demonstrated the humility, responsibility, humanity and reliability that Mercedes College requires from its Captains and we look forward to supporting them throughout their leadership of the College in 2022. Michael Francis Head of Senior School

Athletics and Swimming Carnivals 7-12 Athletics Carnival The weather was excellent, the competition friendly, but fierce, and the engagement of staff and students was exemplary at the Years 7-12 Athletics Carnival on Friday 4 March. As usual, most events were held at SA Athletics Stadium on the main day, aside from the 1500m completed beforehand, and a new concept of the relays on the Main Oval at the College on the following Wednesday, where we were also able to announce Barry House as the House Cup winner. Like the Swimming Carnival, it was great to see students confidently compete in new events for the first time, with support from their peers, as well as experienced athletes reap the rewards of hard work by achieving new personal bests.

Swimming Carnivals In March, our Reception to Year 5 students enjoyed their Swimming Carnival at Unley Pool, participating enthusiastically and embracing a friendly rivalry House spirit as each team cheered on their event participants. Our Years 6-12 Swimming Carnival was hosted at Marion Aquatic Centre, featuring championship races in the 50 metre pool, participation races in the 25 metre pool, and an inflatable obstacle course that proved very popular with our students. We’ll provide you with more details, including the new records and achievements, in the next issue of Fleur de Lis. Jeffrey Wray Swimming and Athletics Carnivals Coordinator

The Arts: Connecting art and industry The Arts provide more than a multifocal lens in which we can easily see and be connected to global issues such as climate change, freedom of speech, and equality for all. By engaging with the Arts, we can connect our body, mind, senses, and spirit. It is through engagement, the global environment can be felt, in turn, inspiring thinking, agency and action. Many have been moved by artistic expression, whether through poetry, music, a play, painting, sculpture, dance or architecture. When we connect with an experience, we feel it emotionally and physically, transported to a place that’s strongly grounded in our own being. Such an experience is how art ongoingly seeks and inspires people to transform thinking into doing. Engaging with the Arts brings people together; sharing experiences, despite the many possible ways people may view the world. With this in mind, there are many different stand-points between the Arts and industry and by connecting them, new ideas can be sought, contemporary issues tackled, and entrepreneurship born. At Mercedes College, we connect our Arts programme with different aspects of the industry. This year, some of our planned experiences are: • Further investment in state-of-the-art 3D printing, laser cutting and engraving technologies for design and visual art learning and engagement. • The Art Gallery of South Australia’s Outreach Workshop, bringing our Year 10 Visual Arts students together with experienced artists across a range of different media. • The Year 10 Sound Production class providing students the opportunity to meet music industry leaders in production, recording, media, and marketing. • For the first time we have a Year 10 Dance class equipping students with transferable skills including critical and creative thinking skills, personal and social skills, and intercultural understanding.

12

Dance develops reflective thinkers who can pose and solve problems, work independently and collaboratively with a foresight to strengthen their understanding of society, the world, and the role we play within it. Our dance teacher Natalie Goodair is engaged with industry professionals including directors, choreographers, and musical directors enabling students invaluable extension opportunities for those wishing to pursue a career in the Performing Arts. • Ruby Chew, a professional visual artist, will lead a self-portraiture workshop with our Year 12 Visual Art SACE and our Year 11 and 12 International Baccalaureate Diploma Visual Arts students this year. • Our SACE Visual Art Year 11 and 12 students will visit Light Square Gallery to see inspiring artistic works by selected individual student artists at the SACE Art and Design Exhibition. • Raffael Raschella (Year 12) has released his own original music on Triplej Unearthed, making connections with radio and the music industry, with more Indie-Rock/ Indie-Pop music to come. Congratulations Raffael! • Kaitlyn Greatrex (Graduate 2021) will visit Los Angeles for a Summer Intensive Music Programme working with music industry leaders who have worked with Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and Rhianna. We wish Kaitlyn Greatrex every success. It is these experiences which impact upon agency and action with our student learners; engaging with the world, to one day contribute to positively changing it. Bringing people together to experience, share, and discuss art in its many facets, develops understandings of community, and reinforces the concept that individual participation in our world can have actual consequence for the betterment of society. Dr Loretta Bowshall-Freeman Learning Area Leader Arts R-12

Development Office Engaging with our community

Mercedes College Development Office brings a variety of disciplines together, with a common purpose of growing enrolments, engaging with you and hosting community events, as well as raising funds and enabling philanthropy for investment in the campus and ever better student outcomes. By staying in step with our community, and adhering to COVID-19 protocols, we continue to showcase the College to families looking to find the right educative environment for their children. A range of morning and afternoon tour options during term enables families to see Mercedes College at work. And a reminder, that children 5-12 years of age from far and wide are also most welcome to attend Vacation Care at Mercedes College each school holiday period. So, invite your friends, cousins, brothers, and sisters to share in the range of fun activities on offer at Mercedes!

Fundraising and Philanthropy Further to the generous support of donors contributing to our John Fanning Memorial Award and the Annual Giving Programme in 2021, we continue to enable philanthropic support of the College’s Master Plan. Support from our community can take many forms, yet all is gratefully received and directly supports learning enrichment at Mercedes College. You can find out more by contacting the Development Office.

Marketing and Communications Communicating with our community and sharing information is important to us, with the Development Office keeping our website up to date, producing publications – including the Fleur de Lis / MOSA Matters – and promoting where students flourish. Recently a number of

students joined us to tell us what they love about Mercedes College – you can hear them on NOVA! You can also stay across the myriad of happenings across our Junior, Middle and Senior School by following us on Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin.

Welcoming new students Each year, our Enrolments Office registers many new students for our key intake years – Reception and Year 7. With limited places across select year levels, the Enrolments Office is currently enrolling new students to join us on campus later this year, as well as in 2023 and 2024. Children can transition to learning in our school environment at their own pace, through our Mid-Year Reception intake, enjoying six Terms of Reception altogether. In the first six months, or Semester 2 of each calendar year, new Reception students can attend 3, 4 or 5 days per week. Limited places are currently available for Mid-Year Reception starting in Term 3, and for 2023.

Events Planning and hosting events for our community to enjoy during a global pandemic has been challenging, yet the effort is rewarded by great celebrations that bring students and their families together beyond the structure of a school day. As constraints ease, we look forward to seeing more of you on campus enjoying our fabulous events – starting with Welcome BBQs later this term. Mercureans Strathspey Society Our Mercurean events have had to be postponed since early 2020 yet in 2022 we are hopeful to again have an opportunity to host functions and enjoy the company of our many Mercedes College friends.

Comprising old scholars, past staff and friends of Mercedes College, the Strathspey Society, include a gift to the College as part of their Will.

Our first event is planned for Friday 22 April, please save the date – with details to follow.

Contribute to our values-centred International Baccalaureate R-12 Catholic College, and support today and tomorrow’s students to develop academically, socially, and personally.

Last December, I returned to Mercedes College to present our Mercurean Award to our very worthy recipient, Sophia Perez. Sophia received our award in recognition of her efforts in all aspects of College life. She has displayed great tenacity to overcome challenges and has remained a hardworking, determined and positive student. A willing and generous contributor to the wider College community, Sophia acts justly, demonstrating strong compassion to others and has exhibited integrity in challenging situations. Sophia is highly respectful in her mature approach to her peers and all members of our community. It is this approach which makes her a worthy recipient of the award. We commend Sophia on her achievements and contribution last year and wish her well for her Year 12 studies in 2022. The Mercureans is a fantastic way for past parents to continue to enjoy the community spirit and keep their connection with the friends they made at Mercedes College alive. I encourage all past parents to attend our functions and remain part of our community. Chris McMahon Mercureans Chairperson

Strathspey Society donors are recognised for their generosity while they are still living, be their gift to Mercedes College large or small. To join the society simply contact the Development Office by calling 8372 3200.

See page 24 for details on Catherine Alcock’s bequest.

Supporting the College From bequests to gifts and donations, everyone can support the college, including when you buy school and sports shoes. It’s as easy as shopping at The Athletes Foot (Burnside store) who donate $5 from every child’s school and/or sports shoe sale to the college – just let them know you’re part of our community. Another college partner is the Credit Union of SA. As beneficiary of their School Community Rewards Programme, they donate 0.20 per cent of all Mercedes College families’ home, car or personal loan amounts to us each month. In 2021, that was around $20,000! Participating is easy, simply nominate Mercedes College as your School Community Rewards beneficiary when you take advantage of their loan products. Both partner programs provide a valuable financial benefit to Mercedes College that’s invested across our campus. Funds raised during 2022 will supplement the allocation to our new Arts and Sports Precinct. With the build of set to start this year, there will be further opportunities for everyone to contribute, including through our Annual Giving Programme.

MOSA Matters Issue 1 2022

From the President A happy new year and warm welcome to everyone in the Mercedes Old Scholar community, particularly our newest old scholars from the Class of 2021. I am often struck by how pervasive the sense of community is among our old scholars. At any given reunion, you can see old scholars catching up with long-lost peers, the shared bonds formed during their schooling so evident after 20, 30 or 50 years. The sense of nostalgia and fondness for their time at the College lead to some memorable long nights and re-forged connections between each other and the College. It was fantastic to be part of a small gathering of former school leaders to farewell Alessandra Miles following her departure from the College after 30 years. Mrs Miles, who worked closely with school leaders to support and develop them, left an indelible impact on many students. Whilst covid-19 considerations prevented a larger gathering of old scholars, it was clear that that Mrs Miles’s contribution to the current and former students of the College will reverberate long into the future. In that same vein of contributing to the College community and reflecting the social justice values of the College, MOSA is working towards awarding its second MOSA scholarship in 2023. The inaugural recipient shares some thoughts about their experiences at the College in this magazine. I once again ask old scholars and members of the College Community to support this worthy cause and details of how you can make a financial donation to assist with the scholarship can be found in the following pages. MOSA also continues its day to day work in supporting the old scholar sporting clubs, providing career mentoring to Year 11 and 12 students and the many other activities that strengthen the connections between old scholars and the College. We’re always looking for old scholars to help out in many ways, so stay tuned to our Facebook and Instagram accounts for more information, as well as finding out about the many successes and exploits of past students of the College. MOSA relies upon the hard work and dedication of its voluntary committee members, who generously give up time to continue the work of MOSA in amongst engagements, weddings, babies, career changes, and the everyday turmoils of life. My thanks go to committee members Ellen Watson (Vice-President), Phil White (Treasurer), Justin Busse, Rob Cardone, Elsa Conlon, Adriana Ceravolo, Alisha Hart, Ryan Hood, and Brianna Watson. The committee is, in turn, indebted to the tireless efforts of our Executive Officer, Anne Morse, whose contributions to MOSA and the College community are immeasurable. Retiring Committee Members Three members of the MOSA Committee retired from office at the Annual General Meeting on 16 March 2022. We are sorry to see them go but thank them for their service to the MOSA Committee and wish them all the very best in their future endeavours. Phil has been a fantastic ambassador for MOSA and we have greatly appreciated his commitment and support over the years. We wish Phil all the best for his upcoming wedding this year and thank him for his outstanding contribution to MOSA and the old scholar community.

Adriana Weling nee Ceravolo (2008) Adriana has been a valued member of the MOSA Committee for the past three years. Her input at meetings and support of MOSA events and initiatives has been greatly appreciated and we will certainly miss her. We congratulate Adriana and her husband Tim on the recent birth of their first child Ava.

We have valued Brianna’s contribution to the committee and thank her for her involvement in the MOSA Career Mentoring Programme. We wish Brianna all the best in her move to Melbourne to further her studies.

Where are they now?

Lauren Whiting nee Springbett (1999)

Ben Tripodi (2010)

Since graduating from Mercedes in 1999 I have completed a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and a Master of Applied Innovation and Entrepreneurship; opened two businesses and have become mother to Ned (12), Ivy (10) and Stella (8).

After graduating from Mercedes in 2010, I pursued a degree in Health Science at Flinders University but was always more interested in technology and business. During my time at university, I played my hand at a number of technology start-ups in the sports and health space including designing high performance carbon fibre bike components.

My current role is owner and CEO of Lift Cancer Care Services, a multi-disciplinary facility that provides cancer patients with evidence based allied health treatments to improve their quality of life and cancer outcomes. Lift is unique in that it brings together the allied health services cancer patients need, all in the one location. The centre is staffed by clinicians with experience in oncology so that the patients who come to Lift feel safe, as their unique healthcare needs are understood and catered for. Lift also offers an exciting approach to exercise for cancer patients. With the support of an on-site medical team, Lift provides exercise specifically for people undergoing active cancer treatment. Exercise Medicine at Lift is delivered in a dose shown to manage the common side effects of cancer drugs, reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and improve overall survival. This innovative approach to exercise in cancer care is widely recognised by Oncologists as a vital part of treatment for people with cancer, however it has not previously been available. After working with Oncology patients as a Physiotherapist and following the cancer diagnosis of a close friend, Lift was conceived to improve the accessibility of allied health services that all people with cancer need and deserve. I have a strong commitment to making an impact on current healthcare delivery in cancer care and hope that Lift can contribute to improving health outcomes for all Australians!

20

These ventures were all a great learning curve for my next venture. In 2018, I was presented with an opportunity to develop athlete wellbeing and data analytics software for professional cycling team, Team Dimension Data which led to the founding of the Lumin Sports. I am now the CEO of the Lumin Group (brand including Lumin Sports & Hoap), a human performance software business, building tools for humans of today, to be their best selves tomorrow. The Lumin Group now works across professional and amateur sports, armed forces and corporate teams. I have a dream job and have been very fortunate to work with some of the best athletes and teams in the world, travel the globe, meet inspiring and unique people, and build a company that is having a lasting impact on human performance. In addition, I have done all of this with an amazing group of people, including a number of other Mercedes old scholars, my sister Jess Steens nee Tripodi (2003), Tony Vroulis (2000), Henry Jones (2010) and Ben Gazzola (2008).

Career Mentoring

Comments from students in 2021:

Year 12 – 20 May Year 11 – 19 August

Old scholars will once again present career mentoring information this year to our Year 11 and 12 students in a wide range of careers. Sessions take place on a Friday morning from 8.40am-9.45am and topics include tertiary study, opportunities in the work force and career experiences of old scholars. We are keen to provide students with knowledge from old scholars currently undergoing tertiary study teamed with old scholars who are already qualified and working in their chosen field.

1

Luke and Dan in the Performing Arts/Music session were incredibly informative and engaging.

We have a wonderful group of old scholar mentors but are always keen to involve more of our old scholars in this valuable programme. If you are interested in being involved and are currently studying or have experience in any of the following career fields please contact MOSA Executive Officer Anne Morse to register your interest. I especially enjoyed hearing from the police officers, they were very engaging and answered all of our questions. They were extremely realistic about the work but you could tell they loved their jobs and so it made you more engaged. They were all good speakers and I felt much more inclined to become a member of the police after their talk.

MOSA Matters Issue 1 2022

From the Archives The Learning Assistance Programme (LAP) – now The Student Mentoring Programme (SMP)

The Learning Assistance Programme was established in South Australia in 1976 and introduced to Mercedes College in 1984. It has had a respected and proud history since its inception and significantly impacted the lives of many thousands of students. The programme is now called The Student Mentoring Programme but the success of the programme is still based on the same five simple principles: 1. It is always one to one 2. It is about relationships 3. It builds confidence and self-esteem through social and emotional learning 4. It takes a creative approach to learning 5. It encourages Year 12 and community participation In 1992 Mrs Penny Penhall joined the staff to further the LAP Programme and at the same time continue the national development of the programme. In 1994 with the support of Mercedes College Penny established the LAP Association Inc. It was launched by Principal Chris McCabe, the patron of the association and a staunch advocate. “Through LAP Penny’s warmth, enormous capacity for love, extraordinary skills as a listener and storyteller and her fierce determination to make a difference were shared across schools, education systems and continents.” - Taken from Penny’s eulogy on her passing in 2015. The LAP Programme’s mentors included Year 12 students, parents, past parents, grandparents and old scholars. So many students have reflected on the profound impact the programme had on their lives and we share excerpts from two old scholar reflections.

22

Charmaine Kuhn (2002) Charmaine was a quiet child growing up with dyslexia and low self-esteem. She has now worked all over the world as a Production Coordinator and Assistant Director of many feature films and credits her success to the LAP Programme, her saviour Penny Penhall and her mentor Anne Manfield. “LAP for me wasn’t just about helping with homework and how to read the watch on my wrist.

1

It was so much more than that. Both Anne and Miss Penhall helped me to develop into Charmaine – taught me my strengths and helped me to build on my weaknesses. I can’t thank them enough for their love and guidance and helping me to be the person I am today.”

Dean Mulders (2014) “I owe the Learning Assistance Programme an immense amount. Without LAP I would not be the confident young man that I am today. LAP has developed me as a person in so many ways, it has taught me how to listen and understand and how to express my feelings freely. I would not have the life skills and positive attitude that I do without LAP in my life.”

2

Like many students involved in the programme Dean has been delighted to give back to the programme and become a mentor himself.

When Penny Penhall passed away in 2015 Cathy Cronin took over the reins as the Student Mentoring Programme Coordinator and continued the fantastic work that Penny started. Cathy was ably assisted by Lisa Brookes, Nadia Berezanksy and hundreds of amazing volunteers and the programme has continued to flourish. A new SMP coordinator was appointed in 2022 – old scholar Stephen Heuzenroeder (Class of 2008) and we look forward to many more years of mentors and students building their school connectedness through positive relationships and underpinned by the Mercy Keys of Compassion and Mutual Respect.

Bequest

Congratulations

Extraordinary bequest notification, inspired by a genuine connection to Mercedes College.

Davie Fogarty (2012)

In late 2021, I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet and chat with Bequest Ambassador and former Principal of Mercedes College, Catherine Alcock (1998-2004), about her remarkable decision to make a very significant bequest to Mercedes College in her Will. From the moment we started talking, Catherine’s passion for Mercedes College, the Mercy tradition and values, and her immense gratitude for the close and genuine connections formed and maintained with members of the Mercedes community, were very evident. As a former Principal, Catherine has a unique insight and understanding of governance, operations, future planning, and the importance of stewardship at Mercedes College, recognising this comes with great responsibility. “As a community, it is so important that we continue to build on what people in the past have given, by providing opportunities for the Mercedes community to support the College and secure its future.” Catherine’s bequest to Mercedes College is indeed inspirational. Her sense of responsibility and awareness of what it is to lead a school and community such as ours, has enabled her to see what it is to give back and create an ongoing legacy to support Mercedes College to continue to thrive in the years ahead. As I consider my own philanthropic contribution to the College, I take away from my meeting with Catherine, the importance of genuine and ongoing connections, responsible stewardship and being future oriented. Thank you, Catherine!

Old scholar and Adelaide entrepreneur Davie Fogarty’s “OODIE” has earned him a prestigious award nomination from professional services firm EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year awards. The nomination recognises the achievements of his company The Davie Group which he launched in 2018. The Oodie has gone on to become a global sales sensation securing licensing deals with Disney, Warner Bros and Star Wars. 2

Bree Hargrave (2000) Bree continues to defy the odds and at the age of 37 won 1st place in the Keirin final of the Santos Festival of Cycling (Tour Down Under) in January this year. This follows on from her win in the 97km SA Road Race defeating many Australian representatives along the way followed by a world class flying 200m ride of 11.1 seconds. Bree is hitting peak form as she pursues her dream of an Olympic cycling gold medal for Australia. Well done Bree. 3

Bree Hargrave

Ben Quirk (2015) Ben Quirk has delivered a talented performance in the hilarious comedy Time Capsule by Runaway Balloon at Fringe World in Western Australia earlier this year. Ben is currently studying at the WA Academy of Performing Arts and showing great talent in the variety of shows he has performed in. 4

MOSA Scholarship MOSA is very appreciative of the support received from our Old Scholar and College community for the inaugural MOSA Scholarship awarded in 2020 to a student in Year 10 for three years of senior schooling. This year we will be advertising for our second scholarship for a student to commence at Mercedes in Year 10 in 2023. One of the key aims of this scholarship is to enable students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience a Mercedes education. Our current scholarship recipient is entering the final year of his scholarship and he shares his experiences so far: “My last two years at Mercedes have been thrilling, from the unparalleled energy of intercollegiate sporting carnivals, through to smashing out IB tests. The Mercedes environment succeeds in provoking a sense of fulfilment in my endeavours as I understand that although tasks sometimes may be challenging, they provide countless positive opportunities. Every volleyball, cross-country training and laugh in the classroom reminds me that I am grateful for this scholarship as this college has made a really positive change in my life. I anticipate that this year, my final year at Mercedes will be as equally exciting as it will be tough, and through this, I will come out the other side with experiences of a lifetime that I will be forever grateful for, all thanks to the generosity of the MOSA community and my Mercedes friends, coaches, and teachers.” We need your help to ensure MOSA can continue to provide scholarships and make a difference to the lives of future Mercedes College students. Football

Cricket

The 2022 season at the Unley Mercedes Jets promises to be an exciting one, both on and off the field.

The Old Scholars Cricket team is having a season of mixed results sitting just outside of the top four finals group with four matches to go.

Pre-season training, with former Crows star Scott Thompson at the helm, has been excellent and the players are benefitting greatly from Scott’s vast knowledge & experience. Unfortunately, numbers are not strong enough to field a Senior Women’s team this season. This is disappointing after an encouraging start-up season last year. The Club is committed to giving it another try in 2023. Please register your interest with Anne Morse on 0407 611 048 or by email: amorse@mercedes.catholic.edu.au The upgraded facilities at Kingswood Oval shall very much increase the enjoyment level for both players and supporters. The upstairs Clubrooms (including the fantastic new extended balcony) is a great meeting place for old scholars on a Saturday. Also, on the last Friday evening of each month (commencing Fri 29 April) old scholars can (for an initial $50 Social Membership fee) be part of an exciting concept whereby you are eligible for large cash draws and other prizes. Again, a wonderful opportunity to catch up at the end of each month in a fun filled environment. Please contact me at dpetch@bigpond.net.au for registration. After a two year hiatus the highly acclaimed Ladies Day function and after party is back on Saturday 30 April. This event has always been very popular with old scholars and, with the new upgraded facilities (and live music), this year’s event should not be missed. Tickets can be purchased via the Club website. The Unley Mercedes Jets welcomes players from the 2021 Year 12 cohort together with their families. Please encourage parents of old scholars from all years to also support the Club with there being plenty of volunteer positions available – it shall be a rewarding experience with the Mercedes spirit and goodwill remaining very evident.

Most recently the team won against the previously undefeated Adelaide University with a thrilling four run margin. Joc O’Connell was a stand out performer with 70 not out including seven sixes. Old scholars Luke Warburton and Tate Steele have been solid contributors with the ball each week. The team has also enjoyed the return of past players and old scholars Matt Crocker, Xavier Hundertmark, Ross Pickering and Andrew Khabbaz. The old scholars joined with Mercedes staff for the annual 20/20 fixture against the Mercedes First XI on 4 March at Waite Oval and there was some great cricket on show by both teams. The Old Scholar/ Staff team were the victors set up by a great opening partnership from Logan Hill and Daniel Caire. Paul O’Callaghan (2009)

Soccer

Netball

Mercedes Old Collegians Soccer Club (“MOCSC”) has hit the ground running in 2022. We have been working hard in pre-season, and with the continuation of sponsors, central grounds, new kits, new members and above all a new team, we believe this season is once again destined for success.

MOSA Netball proudly finished runners-up in the last winter netball competition season. The grand final was an exciting close match with MOSA leading at times in the last quarter and ultimately only missing the trophy by two goals. We are very proud of our girls for their sportsmanship and commitment to both the game and each other.

This year, the men will field three teams in the Collegiate League, and excitingly the women’s side welcomes a 2nd team in the FFSA Women’s Amateur League. Many valued MOCSC members will return to the coaches box once again, along with a few key additions this season. Alasdair Rogers is continuing his amazing work with the women’s team. On the men’s side, club legend Matt Smith will return as coach of the A-grade, along with Jack Davison as his assistant to build on our Championship winning side of 2021. Andy Kay will return as the Supers’ coach with Mark Abraham as his assistant, who has already proven to be an excellent asset to our club. The Greens welcome Darren Lange and the returning Paul Keogh as the coaches for this season. Excitingly, we’ve witnessed the formation of a separate women’s committee to assist in the organisation and administration of the 2-teamed women’s side. A combined committee will accompany these teams to oversee our events, finances and large club decisions, which we are confident will lead to further success for our club in 2022. We would like to thank our 2022 club sponsors; The Gilbert Street Hotel, Nairne Veterinary Clinic, Preston Financial, The WOD Life, and MOSA. Our doors are always open for anyone, old scholar or not, keen to play soccer in a social yet competitive environment. Find ‘MOCSC’ on Facebook or contact any of our members if you’re interested. Our club welcomed many new players for the summer season, expanding to three teams registered in the SAUCNA league for the very first time. These teams have enjoyed a great but challenging season and are fighting hard for finals positions in March. New MOSA netballers are always welcome whether you’re fresh out of Year 12 or just had your 15-year reunion. We will be registering two teams for the upcoming winter season commencing in early April 2022. Please contact me on 0423 238 959 or mosanetball@gmail.com for further information. Sydney Reunion

25 Year Reunion I 22 October 2021 The Class of 1996 celebrated our 25 Year Reunion at the Torrens Arms Hotel on 22 October. We managed to gather a group of 22 of us and we had a really great night. Special thanks to Nicole who made a huge effort and travelled from the Gold Coast. Sadly quite a few people couldn’t make it due to Covid lockdowns across New South Wales and Victoria.

SAVE THE DATE

It was an enjoyable evening drinking, chatting, reconnecting and finding out what everyone has been up to. A massive thanks to Anne Morse who goes out of her way to keep people connected. Anne put in a lot of effort and it was great to have her come out and enjoy the evening with us.

We are hoping that it will be third time lucky with our plans to hold a reunion in Sydney this year for all our old scholars living in New South Wales. COVID has thwarted our previous plans in 2020 and 2021.

MOSA Matters Issue 1 2022

MOSA Assembly As part of MOSA Week we held our annual MOSA Assembly on Friday 5 November 2021. Old scholar and current staff member Jimmy Grant was the guest speaker and he gave an inspiring presentation to students from Years 6-11. Jimmy graduated from Mercedes in 2006 and went on to complete a Bachelor of Education majoring in PE. In early 2014 Jimmy left Australia to further his studies in ESL and taught in schools in China, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia. Jimmy was teaching English in a Buddhist Monastery in the Everest region of the Himalayas when the biggest earthquake Nepal had seen in almost a century hit the region. Jimmy stayed in Nepal and single handedly raised and delivered over $30,000 in aid and support to victims of the earthquake.
