Net Zero Carbon in Construction both achievable and necessary Civils contractors have welcomed the UK construction industry’s nine-point plan to deliver net zero carbon in the industry by 2050, saying it was both ‘achievable’ and ‘necessary.’ The Construction Leadership Council has published CO2nstruct Zero, a nine-point plan that will drive carbon out of all parts of the construction sector and enable the industry to play its part in delivering the UK Government’s objective of net zero for the
whole economy by 2050. Commenting, Chief Executive of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Alasdair Reisner said: “Achieving net zero in construction is the single greatest challenge our sector will face in this century. “The construction industry must adapt to a net zero future, not only to address the threat of climate change, but to modernise and keep up with our international competitors. “This will require a whole-industry strategic
approach, which is why we fully support the role of the Construction Leadership Council in spearheading this vital initiative. “The CLC is in the process of developing measurable targets to monitor how the industry is moving towards net zero over the coming years, and it is the responsibility of everyone working in UK construction to get behind this initiative and deliver the net zero carbon economy of the future.”

Arch Henderson is delighted to announce that two of its Engineers, Kevin Fettes from the Aberdeen Office, and Shane Jamieson from the Lerwick Office, will become Associates from 1 April 2021. Kevin joined Arch Henderson in 2012 as a Senior Civil and Structural Technician, with experience in site management, ent, surveying and setting out. Kevin completed d his Engineering Diploma through the Open University whilst working full time and has recently cently completed the Association for Project Management anagement Project Professional Qualification ation (PPQ). Now, as an Incorporated Civilil Engineer with the Institution of Civil Engineers ngineers and Member of the Association for Project Management, Kevin is responsible onsible for contract management, civil engineering design, and project management for projects throughout the UK and the Falkland Islands. Shane had an early introduction to the

He returned in 2012, while he was studying Structural Engineering at Strathclyde University, to work during the summer holiday holidays. When he graduated in 2 2013 he was offered a job as a Graduate Engineer. EXHIBITOR PROJECT SPOTLIGHT – FISH DETERRENT Kaymac was contracted to install a fish deterrent system at the new Pembroke Power Station. RWE Power was constructing a new 2000MW combined cycle gas turbine power station at the site and the fish deterrent system was required to reduce the amount of fish entering the cooling water intakes and entering the fish return system. The system consisted of an open steel lattice deck supported on steel legs, which were fixed to the concrete invert in front of the cold water intakes. The installation was carried
out from the sea using two crawler cranes on a pair of pontoon barges positioned in front of the intakes. Divers removed over two metres of silt from the invert to allow the legs to be positioned on the invert. The legs were connected by horizontal and diagonal bracings to give rigidity, and these were attached to the bullnose piers of the concrete structure using saddle brackets. The remaining steel work was then bolted onto the legs working from a man-riding basket
suspended from one of the cranes, and then the GRP decking and handrail were installed. A series of acoustic beacons were then installed which could be lowered from the deck down stainless steel guides to the sea bed on winches. These would emit a low frequency sound which would deter the fish from entering the CW intake structure Finally, to protect the structure from corrosion, each of the sixteen legs were then fitted with two 25kg sacrificial Zinc anodes, installed at bed level by the Kaymac dive teams.
21-point plan launched xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx M&CCE Expo supporter CILT (The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) has launched a 21-point plan for transport and logistics, covering all transport modes and activities, to achieve net-zero by 2050. CILT believes that “we can achieve net-zero by 2050” through a range of measures recommended to UK government and others in its latest report, Routes to Net-Zero 2050: 2020 Year End Summary. Kevin Richardson, Chief Executive, CILT(UK), says: “Transport accounts for 28% of UK carbon emissions and, despite the downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, transport emissions will grow with recovery unless action is taken. Government is clearly the key player, but industry, organisations and individuals are also urged to take action, and we believe there is plenty to be achieved, starting today.” Recommendations for national government include setting carbon budgets for the

transport sector and mandating the use of sustainable fuel. Local government is recommended to play its part by implementing policies in ways that suit their circumstances. Transport providers should implement decarbonisation schemes whilst industry and academia are seen as the key players in research and development; CILT’s recommendations for them include
continuing to develop innovative transport decarbonisation technologies, ranging from apps to massive industrial projects to produce hydrogen and sustainable fuels, and to remove greenhouse gases. Paul Le Blond, editor of CILT’s Route to Net-Zero 2050 Year-End Report, says: “All those within the profession have a key role to play in transport decarbonisation. We must spread the message that transport can achieve net zero by 2050 by a range of measures, some technological, some societal and some through policies.”

DYWIDAG JOINS M&CCE EXPO
With a reputation for providing ‘Special Solutions in Difficult Ground’, Dywidag has completed many challenging projects over the years; including work on the 800m wide masonry and concrete Loch Arklet dam, located north-west of Glasgow and built over 100 years ago to provide water to the city. Due to increasing leakage the dam had to be strengthened using high-capacity ground anchors. In total, 64 vertical DYWIDAG Strand
Anchors were installed from the crest of the existing dam into the underlying bedrock to act as tie-backs. Double corrosion protected, the strongest anchors reach an ultimate strength of 8,100 kN. Logistics was a major challenge for the contractors involved. The only access to the job site was via a narrow and winding single track road south of the dam on which only four DYWIDAG Strand Anchors could be delivered on each vehicle. Installation of the anchors had d
to be carried out from the top of the dam, as there was no possibility of working from a barge mounted crane due to the loch level having been drawn down for safety reasons. A special 6,800kN long stroke jack, the highest capacity anchor stressing jack in the UK, was used for both the anchor tests and the final stressing as the DYWIDAG Strand Anchors are some of the highest capacity ground anchors that have ever been installed in the UK.
New Chairman for GGR Group GGR Group Ltd has announced the appointment of Sat Dhaiwal as Company Chairman. Sat has been working closely with the GGR board following his appointment as their Board Advisor in early 2020. Dhaiwal has extensive experience and accomplishments in the Rental Industry following his 25-years with A-Plant of which 16 years were as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of A-Plant and a Director of its parent company Ashtead Group plc, a FTSE-100 organisation. During this time, he also received a number of awards of recognition, including Hire Person of the
year 2018 and European Rental Person of the e Year 2016.
