Decarbonising operations with the use of USV technology Chaired and moderated by Peter Collinson, founder of Dendrityca, ‘Decarbonising operations with the use of USV technology’ looks at real-world case studies and early adopters across the commercial marine sector. James Cowles, Business Development Manager at L3Harris & Russell Bird, Deputy Group Harbour Master (Hydrographic & Dredging) for Peel Ports Group, will present on the L3Harris autonomous unmanned vessel FITZROY, purchased by Peel Ports for use across their port sites.
‘‘
U ncrewed and autonomous systems are already delivering decarbonisation in maritime businesses. Learn from real world examples of how these systems can be applied.” Peter Collinson Designed to provide autonomous solutions to improve working efficiency on the water, FITZROY can be used for hydrology research, scientific exploration, hydrographic survey, emergency Search And Rescue and other tasks. It uses GPS location tracking to follow pre-set waypoints and mission parameters, navigating autonomously while intelligently avoiding obstacles up to 50m ahead. The vessel communicates with the remote base station via WIFI, 4G and VHF radio. Harry Spedding, General Manager at AutoNaut, will be referencing a mission that is currently ongoing. “We have had an AutoNaut operating in the North Atlantic
‘‘
T he shift to a net zero marine sector requires a fundamental change to the shipping ecosystem and the increased use of USV technology will enable part of that transition.” Leigh Storey
since the beginning of August, collecting data that will then be shared with multiple scientific organisations. Current carbon emissions since launch are zero, but we will talk about facing the difficulties of operations and power generations, as well as the truth of understanding our supply chain. “The Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) Industry is full of innovators, brilliant engineers and idealists. The AutoNaut at sea operations are already Net Zero, but we can always be better. We need to aim the brilliant minds we have to produce a positive impact, not just reducing our current impact. The desire for greater knowledge has its own technical challenges, and it is important we all work towards overcoming these challenges to ensure the sector can improve in a sustainable manner.” Dan Hook, Managing Director Ocean Infinity, will cover some of the cutting edge developments at global Ocean Infinity Group;
‘‘
D ecarbonisation of the maritime industry will require rapid development and deployment of technology… at a pace that the industry isn’t used to.” Dan Hook focussing on the uncrewed and lean crewed digital maritime program, Armada. The robotic vessels that make up the Armada fleet range in size from 8m to 78m and are monitored from a series of remote control centres. With modular payloads and the ability to carry cargo, Ocean Infinity expects this fleet will play a major role in the future of clean maritime operations. 06 October 2021 – 10:00-11:00 BST – add to your SeaworkConnect schedule here

Big power in a small package
Cummins new 4.5-litre diesel engine boasts big power in a small package with low vibration, complying with EU Stage V, U.S. EPA Tier 3 emissions and regulations without the use of aftertreatment. Successful installations in both propulsion and auxiliary use have had excellent reviews from the crew of the field test vessels. The B4.5 has been deployed in various vessels including tugboats, assisting in tasks such as shuttling fuel and dredging equipment around. The in-line 4-cylinder, 16 valve, 4-stroke marine engine is easy to adapt to not only fit new builds but can easily replace outdated propulsion systems with a quieter, more environmentally friendly option.
Stefano Unali, Sales Manager at Cummins Marine said, “The B4.5 may be the smallest marine engine offered by Cummins but it is a powerful solution for the marine industry. This new marine engine, based on the B4.5 industrial engine, has proven itself time and time again in demanding applications, and yet
is easy to service and operate.” The B4.5 is compatible with all the latest offerings from Cummins, including DockCommand inboard joystick, PrevenTech engine monitoring technology, and C Command, as well as 3rdparty controls and displays.
to use the Cygnus 4+ gauge because the Cygnus products are so easy to use and accurate”, said John. “He was really very interested in the whole process of what we were doing and why.”
Famous Face Gets a Lesson on Surveying
The range of Cygnus gauges is extensive. All gauges are wrapped in soft rubber and drop tested to Military standards (MilStd 810G) as well as being completely environmentally sealed and waterproof to IP67. All units have the Multiple Echo technique as standard and now A-Scan displays, data logging and twin crystal probes can all be added to enable the gauges to be used in almost every scenario and on almost any application.
Boatyards can always turn up a few surprises but a national treasure is unusual. Marine surveyor John Heath, who has over 40 years’ experience and is also the current Technical Director for the IIMS, was conducting a purchase survey on an ex-passenger vessel on the River Thames. As he was taking measurements with his Cygnus 4+ thickness gauge, in order to calculate loss of plate, a very famous face approached him; none other than Sir Tony Robinson, a British ‘national treasure’ who is a prolific creator of factual and historical documentaries about the UK, (but is perhaps most famous for playing Blackadder’s sidekick – Baldrick!) Sir Tony was filming a series for Channel 5 called “The Thames: Britain’s Greatest River” and he and his team were in in the same boatyard where John and his team were working. Much to everyone’s amusement, having approached John on the slipway, Sir Tony broke off from filming to be given a lesson on marine surveying and ultrasonic thickness gauging. “It was quick and easy to show Sir Tony how

SEAWORK CONNECT partner to take our innovation to the next level. Over the past 10 years they have been hugely successful in introducing their own large electro-chlorination system to the global merchant fleet; they have a commitment to research & development and crucially they have the financial resources required to market this product internationally. We are excited to see our product go global.” The technology is already being adopted on ships in aftpeak tanks within Overseas Shipholding Group’s tanker fleet and on the dredger MV Charlock in the Netherlands.
Suzuki collects Micro-Plastic Suzuki has developed a world first innovation within their outboards - a device that collects micro-plastic waste whilst operating the outboard. It collects micro-plastic waste from seawater pumped through the engine as part of its cooling system.
The device can be easily installed and does not affect the engine performance since it only utilizes the returning water that has already been used to cool the engine. To watch the video and find out more about Suzuki’s Clean Ocean Project visit Suzuki’s SeaworkConnect stand here
