NavyX, the experimental arm of the Royal Navy is interested in exploring novel systems and designs. Concepts that maybe based on physical animal biomechanics or behaviours that give an advantage through being more agile, efficient, or stealthy, possibly through having a reduced signature. Evolutionary biomechanics move away from using traditional thrusters, to those inspired by the flapping fins of swimming animals such as fish or penguins. This RFI therefore aims to understand the technology that is both in development, and that already exists but maybe had not considered a Defence use case. It also seeks to understand what value or competitive advantage could be achieved comparative to existing technology, in what timeframe, and at what cost. This information will be used to inform potential future investment.
