DNV confirms technical feasibility of Odfjell Oceanwind’s WindGrid system

NAVY 18 WP is Baltic Workboats’ latest addition to its navy vessels portfolio. It is designed to meet the most challenging operational conditions and missions with a main focus on the military and naval segments.

The vessel has an overall length of 17.25 metres and its maximum speed is in excess of 33 knots.

Propulsion is provided by two Volvo Penta D13 1000 marine engines which drive two fixed pitch propellers.

Shallow draft and excellent handling characteristics make this vessel ideal for operations in coastal areas with varying depth and weather conditions. NAVY 18 WP is designed to be operated by the crew of two to six persons depending on specific mission requirements.

NAVY 18 WP is designed with numerous features to best suit navy needs. The vessel can be equipped with a Remote Weapon Station (RWS) at the bow deck which is operated from a control station in the wheelhouse.

In addition, the vessel can be fitted with two light machine guns on aft deck engine room vent boxes.

Areas of the vessel such as wheelhouse, engine room and accommodation area can be fitted with ballistic protection panels to guarantee the crew and vessel’s safety during interactions with hostile units. A gyrostabilizer is available as an option to guarantee the best seakeeping characteristics and a comfortable work environment for crew in all weather conditions.

Navtor has opened a new office in Gdansk, Poland, dedicated to accelerating development of cloud-based and AI solutions for customers seeking an increasingly integrated approach to optimising performance and e-Navigation. The maritime technology firm, which delivers products and services to over 7,000 vessels worldwide, is tapping into a local IT talent pool already prized by companies such as Amazon, Boeing and Intel.

DIGITAL INNOVATION AWARD Netherlands-headquartered shipbuilder Damen is one of the seven recipients of the inaugural IDC Future of Digital Innovation Awards.

US based International Data Corporation (IDC) initiated these awards to highlight successful digital innovation projects and initiatives. Other winners include Mattel (Fisher-Price Smart Connect), the U.S. Air Force (Virtual Mission Trainer), Shell (Open AI Energy Initiative) and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (Pay-it-Forward).

Damen won in the ‘Performance as a Service’ category, receiving the award for its Triton program. Damen Triton is a user-friendly digital platform that collects, analyses, and visualizes data from any kind of connected vessel. With the

platform, Damen vessels are equipped with 10,000-15,000 sensors, which collect various data. For instance, how much fuel, fresh water and oil are stored in on board tanks or engine performance indicators such as power, RPM or fuel consumption.

Battery tug

Corvus Energy has been selected by ABB Marine & Ports to supply the energy storage system for the all-electric tug eWolf by Crowley Maritime Corporation. The vessel will be installed with 6.2MWh of Corvus Orca Energy battery.

US Commercial diving company Subsea Global Solutions has acquired SRN Group Diving & ROV Underwater Services (Belgium), a leading underwater services and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) hull cleaning firm.

With this acquisition, SGS expands its global footprint to Europe, acquires industry leading ROV hull cleaning technology and increases the number of its home ports worldwide to 14 locations.

Electrification not enough to meet net zero target A new forecast of the energy transition from DNV has warned that even if all electricity was ‘green’ from this day forward, the world will still fall a long way short of achieving the 2050 net zero emissions ambitions of the COP21 Paris Agreement.

DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook, now in its fifth year and launched two months before COP26 takes place in Glasgow, provides an independent forecast of developments in the global energy system to 2050.

Electrification is on course to double in size within a generation and renewables are already the most competitive source of new power however, DNV’s forecast shows global emissions will reduce only 9% by 2030, with the 1.5˚C carbon budget agreed by global economies emptied by then.

Hydrogen is the energy carrier that holds the highest potential to tackle hard to abate emissions however, DNV’s forecast indicates hydrogen only starting to scale from the mid-2030s and, even then, only building to 5% of the energy mix by 2050.

Shipping company Wallenius Sol is expanding one of its European route networks.

The company will link Skelleftehamn in Sweden with Finland and Zeebrugge and Antwerp in Belgium, by including the Port of Skellefteå in its route network. The service will involve weekly traffic to the Port of Skellefteå beginning October 2021.

“In our discussions with industry, we identified a need for reliable, regular weekly traffic to link the Port of Skellefteå to the continent. So it’s especially gratifying now that we can offer both feeder and RoRo services to the region,” said Jonas Wåhlin, general manager at Wallenius Sol.

Diesel outboards

Cox Marine, a British manufacturer of highpowered diesel outboard engines, has strengthened its senior leadership team with the appointment of Gavin Wesson as Chief Operating Officer. Gavin has held senior leadership roles at GKN Aerospace, GE Aviation and Doncasters Group, and, most recently, COO of Civil Airframe at GKN Aerospace.

Cromarty

Graham Grant, the Port of Cromarty Firth’s Marine Support Manager, has been appointed to the National Council of the UK Harbour Masters’ Association (UKHMA). Graham has worked for the Port of Cromarty Firth for 36 years, having worked across all of the Port’s marine operations functions. In his current role, he leads a team of marine professionals responsible for oversight and management of dayto-day marine operations within the Cromarty Firth. These include responsibilities as diverse as piloting, conservancy, project management and emergency planning.

Naval pods

Forum Energy Technologies will deliver two of its emergency life support store (ELSS) pods to the Hellenic Navy. The contract, which marks FET’s first supply to Greece’s naval force, will see the business manufacture the two pods at its facility in Kirkbymoorside, Yorkshire, UK. ELSS pods are pressure-tight storage vessels used by naval units as part of a submarine rescue system. In the event of a submarine crew becoming stranded below sea, FET’s ELSS pods are able to deliver lifepreserving materials such as medical equipment and supplies to the crew until a full rescue can be deployed.

GERMANY FUNDS HYDROGEN A German container terminal operator is set to benefit from new hydrogen development funding.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will approve funding for three key hydrogen projects to facilitate Germany’s transition to a hydrogen economy over a period of four years. Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) is one of more than 240 partners working on the projects and can now draw on an additional €2.3m to test new transportation technologies for green hydrogen.

HHLA is one of the partners involved in the technologies for the transportation of hydrogen project (TransHyDE). Other projects due to receive funding include the serial manufacture of large-scale water electrolysers (H2Giga) and the offshore production of hydrogen and secondary products (H2Mare).

“An important question in the development of hydrogen technology is the widespread

availability of this energy source,” explained Dr Georg Böttner, hydrogen coordinator at HHLA. “HHLA, too, is searching for the best answers to this question, which is why we are in volved in the key TransHyDE project.”

Hydrogen is rarely used at the same location where it is manufactured. TransHyDE is tackling this problem and wants to develop a holistic approach to the production, transportation and use of hydrogen. Together with other

partners, HHLA is examining the various transport options here and is involved in the TransHyDE projects “Mukran” and “Helgoland” on the islands of Rügen and Heligoland, respectively, where the transportation of hydrogen in high-pressure containers as well as via LOHCs (liquid organic hydrogen carriers) is being tested.

HHLA intends to become climate-neutral by 2040 as part of its sustainability strategy.

MULTIFOLD SUSTAINABILITY INVESTMENTS Adler and Allan has appointed its first sustainability manager to embed sustainability at the heart of its growth strategy.

The environmental risk reduction specialist has hired Dan Ellis (pictured), who joins the business from Delta-Simons where he was principal sustainability consultant.

“He brings with him a wealth of experience in the sustainability, carbon reduction and ESG sphere, having supported some of the world’s largest manufacturers, retailers, technology companies and investment funds to reduce risk and improve positive impact,” said Adler and Allan.

Alongside the appointment, Adler and Allan is launching a series of services to help its clients to understand their environmental impact, decarbonise operations and take positive action towards a sustainable future.

These services include net-zero strategies and action plans; carbon offsetting; streamlined energy and carbon reporting (SECR); energy audits; transport

audits; TCFD & non-financial disclosures; and environment social governance (ESG).

Adler and Allan also recently launched a sustainability tool to

estimate the carbon emissions of any project unique to a client’s industry, offering its customers a ‘greener alternative’ when providing proposals.

The tool allows full transparency of the CO2 emissions associated with all activities required in a project to allow clients to select from at least two remedial options; one being a reduced carbon alternative. The tool has been built using DEFRA conversion factors and is believed to be the first one of its kind in the industry.

Final turbine installation Scotland’s largest windfarm, Moray East, has installed the last of its 100 Vestas V164-9.5MW turbines at sea.

The windfarm began generating when its first few turbines came online in June and has been gradually increasing output as more turbines are firstly installed, then commissioned. The commissioning work which will enable the project to achieve full

output of 950MW is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

Project Director Enrique Alvarez said: “In the face of unprecedented global conditions we have safely completed the installation of 100 turbines within the challenging timescale of a single season, and I would like to thank and congratulate all those involved in achieving this milestone safely.

FIRST CLASSIFICATION FOR HYBRID SURFACE EFFECT SHIP Bureau Veritas has classified the world’s first hybrid-powered Surface Effect Ship, the CWind Pioneer This innovative vessel features an air cushion, twin hulls and an innovative diesel and electric drivetrain with considerable battery storage onboard.

With a capacity of 24 passengers, the CWind Pioneer is a direct response to the needs of the offshore wind industry for innovative technologies that reduce CO2 emissions and provide cost-effective services to windfarms located further offshore. The CWind Pioneer can operate at speeds exceeding 43kts, and can transfer personnel safely and comfortably even in extreme weather conditions with significant wave heights up to 2m, permitting greater operational windows.

Its air cushion motion control system provides significant advantages, with smoother and more comfortable conditions on-board and increased operational days offshore. The CWind Pioneer is being used at the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore wind farms in the Netherlands.

Close cooperation with the designers, ESNA - a Norwegian Naval Architecture company, and Global Marine Group’s in-house Engineering Department and shipbuilders, Wight Shipyard Co., enabled Bureau Veritas experts to provide their technical and regulatory expertise The vessel is indeed a pioneer in many aspects. It is a first of its kind with a hybrid diesel and battery electric power system, which enables the vessel to operate purely on battery power alongside or at slow speeds, such as when transiting restricted waterways or on standby in the windfarm, which helps reduce fuel consumption, reduce [diesel] engine running hours and lower CO2 emissions.

In order to ensure that CWind Pioneer can take full advantage of the Electric Hybrid technology in a safe manner, Bureau Veritas has assigned the notation Electric Hybrid (PM, ZE). This notation provides a comprehensive framework for the safe implementation of this technology while achieving the client’s objectives of working at zero-emission mode, at port or at standby in the offshore wind farm, as well as enhancing speed performance in boost mode to reduce transfer time between shore and the offshore wind farms.

Interconnector construction contract awarded Greenlink has awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Greenlink electricity interconnector project to a consortium comprised of Siemens Energy AG and Sumitomo Electric Industries As part of an overall project investment that exceeds €500m, the contract will deliver the 190km subsea and underground electricity interconnector to connect the power grids of Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The engineering, procurement, and construction contract will cover works on the onshore and subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable systems, two converter stations, a tail station at Great Island in Wexford and onshore cable works in Wexford and Pembrokeshire, Wales. The award also includes a service and maintenance contract for operations and maintenance following commissioning of the project, which is expected to be in 2024.

Work will begin at the start of 2022, following financial close.

New office and workshop/storage KenzFigee, a well-established lifting, handling and service specialist of tailor-made equipment for the marine, offshore and wind energy industry has opened its new UK facilities.

As part of an overall project a new site at Brechin Business Park (near Aberdeen, Scotland) has been chosen to allow KenzFigee UK to accommodate the company’s rapidly expanding workforce and facilitate an increase in demand for its engineering expertise in the global offshore oil & gas, defence and renewables markets.

The new offices will house multiple project teams within the KenzFigee UK organisation including an innovative engineering department and versatile multi skilled service workforce. As part of this development, four new jobs will be created.

SUBSEA INSTALLATION BREAKTHROUGH Fugro claims it has revolutionised a subsea installation programme for Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (GUPCO) with its innovative QuickVision® technology.

Used for the first time in Egypt, the contactless positioning solution replaced the conventional survey sensors typically attached to subsea structures during installation.

QuickVision uses a smart camera, attached to a remotely operated vehicle, that can determine the heading and attitude of a subsea structure as it is landed. This eliminates the requirement to pre-install a sensor package on the structure, and retrieve it once installation is complete, which reduces the time and costs associated with a dive support vessel.

Dr HENRY ROBINSON Dynautics Limited According to Dr Henry Robinson, CEO of Dynautics Limited, the design and build of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) is complex and challenging.

“Hundreds of decisions relating to mission goals, payload requirements, power budget, hull design, communication systems and propulsion control and management need to be analysed and implemented.”

Crewed vessel builders often rely on single-source suppliers for propulsion and instrumentation to help the crew control the vessel. In the case of an uncrewed (or partially crewed) vessel, the builder needs to replace elements of the human interface with a remote human interface. Creating remote-control capability for propulsion systems requires interaction with their internal communications, which are often proprietary and closed.

Companies such as Torqeedo, Volvo Penta, Mercury and many others provide control interfaces that are designed for manned operation. For uncrewed vessels, enhanced control interfaces are required to make the designer’s task easier.

Uncrewed surface vessels vary in size from under 1 metre LOA to 20 metres and beyond, with displacements ranging from a few kilograms to many tonnes.

Unsurprisingly therefore, propulsion systems cover a wide range of power levels, interfaces and technologies.

Dr Robinson is quick to point out that while many of the available interface protocols carry demands to the propulsion, most of them do not bring back any status information.

Feedback of achieved RPM may come from tacho pulses or from built-in sensors that generate CAN or serial data. Other sensors may be fitted, such as current sensing on electric motors, which can give an indication of power delivered.

“Safety is of course a critical concern, especially at high power levels, but even a small propeller can cause damage or injury and the control system needs to be designed with this in mind. This is particularly important in handover protocols for optionally manned boats.”

A frequent challenge faced in the control of

USVs is the achievement of a smooth response from full astern to full ahead.

Crewed vessels usually have a detent behaviour, with a wide deadband around the stop position. To achieve accurate control of differential steering, the control system needs to compensate for this deadband. Internal combustion engines tend to drive through a gearbox, with an inevitable sudden change when the gearbox engages which the control system must take into account. Waterjets are the exception to this, as they adjust smoothly through the zero point. Electric drives often have a similar deadband built in, so again the control system needs to be designed to preserve this behaviour for a man on board, but smooth it out for automatic control, e.g., for low-speed manoeuvring and Dynamic Positioning.

Dynautics has developed a wide range of solutions to drive propulsion and steering from a few Watts up of 1,000hp or more, from electric to internal combustion and even for sail vessels and wave propulsion.

TRANSIT ARRAY TRIAL SUCCESS A new high-resolution deep-water multibeam echosounder system has just successfully completed its first trials off the coast of Florida

Okeanos Explorer is the first vessel in the world to be fitted with Kongsberg Maritime’s EM 304 MKII transmit array an upgrade of the EM 302 deep-water multibeam system which has been deployed daily since the ship was originally launched in 2008. The new EM 304 MKII was put through its paces over the course of a 25-day expedition on board Okeanos Explorer, conducted by a team from NOAA Ocean Exploration, the US federal organisation devoted to the exploration of deep ocean environments.

The motive behind the expedition was to assess the functionality and readiness of all mapping-related equipment on the vessel - including an official authorisation of the new EM 304 MKII system - before the remainder of the field season commences. Receiving a green light from the NOAA verifies that this equipment is capable of collecting the most accurate, high-quality survey data and sharing it with hydrographic communities. By enabling the team to optimise

the planning and execution of surveys, it will ensure that all forthcoming missions produce definitive results in the most cost-effective manner.

The EM 304 MKII has been designed to increase the efficiency of deep-water mapping work by enhancing the quality of harvested data and expanding the achievable coverage area. KM’s multibeam systems have a well-founded reputation for producing exceptionally clean data across the entire swath width, but the improved, future-proof MKII EM platform uses an innovative datagram format which supports several new features including extended backscatter calibration. More new features are currently being developed.

As with all Kongsberg EM multibeam echo sounders, the EM 304 MKII has been designed to minimise any potential impact on ocean ecosystems, emitting the lowest-possible sound levels so as to help in safeguarding marine organisms within survey areas.

Faster remote coastal mapping Fugro RAMMS, the world’s smallest and lightest ‘deepwater’ airborne lidar bathymetry (ALB) system, can now be deployed from vessels of opportunity using a Schiebel CAMCOPTER® S-100 uncrewed aerial system (UAS).

The specialised UAS incorporates vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) technology, making it an ideal nearshore and coastal mapping solution in areas that lack aviation infrastructure. Fugro technology partner and RAMMS co-developer Areté Associates proved the capability during a recent demonstration project for the US Navy in

Florida. Fugro supported that effort, acquiring vessel-based bathymetry over the test site for validation of the field trial data.

In addition to extended geographic reach,

the RAMMS/CAMCOPTER S-100 solution provides significant sustainability gains. With low fuel consumption, high in-air endurance and rapid rate of data collection, the new approach reduces carbon emissions by 98% compared to large, legacy ALB systems.

The RAMMS/CAMCOPTER S-100 solution is also well suited for mapping waters in high-relief areas, like canyons and fjords, where crewed, fixed-wing operations can be both difficult and dangerous.

HEALTHY ORDER BOOKS FOR TUG BUILDERS Top of the numbers league is the design office of Merré who according to French media is progressing its order for seven 12m long, 10tbp, aluminium-hulled tugs for the French Navy, part of a 29 vessel contract awarded by the French Navy to Merré and CMN Group. Earlier in 2021 Le Fou, Le Chevalier and Le Pingouin were launched at Brest and Cherbourg and it is reported these RP 10 class tugs will operate at naval bases in France and elsewhere globally.

Svitzer has strengthened its presence in Brazil with an order for four 70tbp, RAmparts 2300 tugs from Rio Maguari Shipyard.

It makes this the fourth occasion the Copenhagen-based tug owner has turned to Brazilian yards with 14 ASD tugs based in the country since 2015. The first of this quartet is due for delivery in October 2022, the remainder in April 2023.

An example of cross-continent cooperation has seen Damen Shipyards Group sign a licence agreement with USbased Conrad Shipyard LLC for construction of two Multi Cats 3013 for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation that will become the first Damen Multi Cats to be built in the US. The agreement allows US-based operators to access Damen’s portfolio in compliance with the Jones Act through licence holders constructing the vessels themselves in the US. The Netherlands-based OSD-IMT has completed design of an MPV 4000 multipurpose vessel to be built at Turkey’s Uzmar Shipyards for Smit Lamnalco. The description suggests a more than capable vessel able to undertake conventional and emergency towing duties along with diving support; cargo transfer; ROV operations; crew and pilot transfers; firefighting, and oil recovery and dispersant spraying

operations. Powered by twin azimuth thrusters, an e-motor connected to a PTI on one of the thrusters will enhance fuel efficiency when in stand-by mode, an endurance of up to 40 days possible offshore.

Finally looking beyond Europe, worthy of mention is an order for a 55tbp RAmparts 3200-SD ASD tug for the Royal Thai Navy with design and build entrusted to Asian Marine Services Public Company Ltd. It will be the third RAmparts 3200 to be operated by the Royal Thai Navy.

Third VectRA tractor joins Ashdod Port fleet Sanmar Shipyards has delivered a Robert Allan Ltd tractor tug to Italy’s Tripmare making the third similar design vessel to operate at Ashdod Port, Israel.

ASD tugs are obviously a popular choice for shiphandling operations but tractor tugs, in this case powered by Voith Schneider cycloidal propulsion units also remain in demand and Eitan, delivered recently to Tripmare SpA joins two other RAL VectRA AVT 3000 tugs Arie A and Ashdod operated

by Ashdod Port Co Ltd. An impressive 73.5tbp along with escort steering forces above 100t are quoted for Eitan which is powered by two Caterpillar 3516C high speed main engines each rated 2,525kW and powering Voith 32RV5 EC/265-2 cycloidal propellers via Reintjes WAF 863 gearboxes with integral clutches.

traditional turbo couplings, Sanmar stating: ‘This combination is smaller, lighter and less costly than the traditional medium speed drive system.’ Eitan also has fire-fighting and oil recovery capabilities.

configuration enhanced by radial tow hooks both forward and aft. The winch’s capacity of 150m of synthetic line on one drum and 710m of steel wire on the other indicates a capability of operations other than just shiphandling.

Also in tractor configuration style, the heavy-duty fendering arrangement is concentrated towards the stern featuring cylindrical type with a course of ‘W’ fenders below. Hollow ‘D’ fenders protect the sheer lines which tie neatly into ‘W’ fenders at Eitan’s bow. Accommodation for six persons is provided at main deck level, cabins comprising four single and one double each with en-suite facilities. A lounge/mess area and galley are also located in the deckhouse with galley stores and laundry room below main deck forward.

THAMES TUGS TURN TO BIOFUEL The move is part of Cory’s ambitions to decarbonise its river and transport operations including its tug fleet being powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), produced from waste material including used cooking oil and waste fats which Cory states: ‘do not release any new carbon dioxide into the atmosphere’. HVO also reduces NOx and particulate matter emissions by 19% and 21% respectively and is in line with its broader business approach involving the effective use of waste.

Cory operates a five-strong fleet of lighterage tugs, most notable of which are four Damen Shoalbuster 2208S vessels Recovery, Resource, Redoubt and Reclaim delivered to Cory Environmental in 2010. This 1,400bhp/16tbp quartet are visually quite unlike the standard Shoalbuster range, specifically designed for this role and presenting a low air draught profile to negotiate bridges on the Thames. The fifth of Cory’s Thames tugs is Regain, a 26.5m, 1,610bhp/17.5tbp vessel again designed for the role and delivered by Delta Shipyard of Sliedrecht in the Netherlands in 1997.

Cory’s presence on the Thames dates back 125 years, its fleet of tugs and barges transporting more than one million tonnes of recyclable and non-recyclable waste annually, a service that takes 100,000 truck movements off London’s roads annually. The company grew from a coal distribution company on the Thames and its tug and barge combinations carrying containerised waste are a familiar part of London’s river scene. Its commitment to waste transfer services was reinforced in 2020 with the sealing of a multi-million pound

contract for 35 new barges, replacing many of its existing 50-strong fleet over the next seven years. For flexibility they will comprise two types with capacity for 20 and 30 containers.

Dougie Sutherland, Cory CEO said: “As we look to the future, which includes plans to invest £800 million into new projects in London and the South East, the river will continue to play a pivotal role in our operations. It’s therefore vital that we ensure that we invest in the sustainability of our tugs and in doing so help the UK to address the decarbonisation of shipping, another key aspect of the country’s net zero target while improving air quality.”

Kotug Training & Consultancy and AMC Search are to develop a strategic partnership to train tug masters, ship crews and pilots in Australia.

The shipping industry in general is reporting an increasing demand for qualified maritime professionals. The towage sector is included here as increasingly powerful and sophisticated tugs and specialist towing procedures place extra demands on ensuring crew training and standards keep up with the times where previously hardearned skills were handed down with training often carried out ‘on the job.’

AMC Search is the training and consultancy division of the Australian Maritime College while Kotug Training and Consultancy is a similar division of Kotug and the partnership follows a similar agreement signed earlier in 2021 between Kotug Training & Consultancy and Maritime Training Institute Karachi covering maritime personnel training at the latter’s facilities in Karachi.

AMC Search aims to increase its capabilities while maintaining ‘best-in-class

training’ with Kotug fulfilling this requirement by offering first-class trainers and training material, Netherlands-based Kotug stating its training division is the only ISO 9001 certified tug training company in the world and sets high standards for training facilities it uses. It aims to ‘create safe and sound operations with respect for the environment and an excellent level of training and competence while safeguarding the well-being of everyone involved.’

With joint pilot and tug master training being requested more and more by ports and terminals globally and the Kotug

organisation as a whole being a major tug owner and operator in its own right it will be well aware of the importance of effective teamwork between the crews of both the tug and the ship being assisted and will be one of the key training programmes to be delivered at the AMC Search Maritime Simulation Centre in Tasmania.

Explaining the finer detail of what is involved Patrick Everts, general manager at Kotug Training & Consultancy said: “Our training method consists of three components, classroom and simulator training at state-of-the-art simulators, and on-board training. It is a proven didactic method for the best training results, preparing the students for expected and unexpected real-life situations. DOUBLE DELIVERIES FOR CROWLEY 8 RAL-designed Apollo will operate in San Francisco Bay for Crowley

US privately-owned Crowley Maritime Corporation has expanded its towage fleet with the addition of a biofuel-powered escort tug and an articulated tug/barge (ATB) unit.

Crowley’s activities include logistics services such as ocean and land transportation while its extensive shipping division provides diversified services including ship assist and tanker escort services along with articulated tug-barge units. The latter division has taken delivery of the Robert Allan Ltd-designed tug Apollo, built by Diversified Marine Inc and earmarked to join sister-vessel Hercules serving vessels in San Francisco Bay. Stand-out figures for Apollo include an estimated 94tbp from a hull ‘under 80ft [24m] long’ with power derived from Caterpillar 3516 Tier IV-compliant engines. As well as meeting State of California environmental regulations, Crowley states congestion in the ports of California makes performance ‘no.1 concern’ for customers, obviously a factor in the selection of such a compact yet powerful vessel.

Crowley Fuels is another arm of the Crowley family, benefitting now with arrival of the ATB unit Aurora/Qamun from Master Boat Builders of Coden, Ala with the barge built by Gunderson Marine LLC. The ATB was designed in-house, specifications including a tug length

of 32.3m and barge length 55.8m and with a 55,000-barrel capacity will transport clean petroleum products year-round in the remote regions of Western Alaska. Like Apollo, the ATB features Tier IV engines for reduced emissions in this case powering Z-drives with 400hp bow thrusters enhancing manoeuvrability and a range of 4,300 miles allowing access to most locations in Alaska.

Increased structural framing, shell plating

and extended zero-discharge endurance with shallow water capabilities means Aurora/ Qamun meets Ice Class and Polar Code requirements allowing operation in winter ice conditions and temperatures as low as -20’F. In addition, ship fenders and a specialised coupling system including a ‘first-of-its-kind lightering helmet’ allows for ship-to-ship lightering. Its double hull design and low draught allow shallow water operation (2.7m) and a double anchor system allows it to move close to beaches to reach undeveloped ports and village sites.

Aurora/Qamun joins a formidable fleet of vessels for Crowley who operate and manage ‘the largest US-flag petroleum and chemical tank vessel fleet in the country’ including 42 Jones Act large petroleum transportation vessels carrying nearly 750 million barrels of product with more than 5,700 transfers in 2020.

UZMAR BUILDS RECORDBREAKING OIL SPILL VESSEL Uzmar Shipyards has delivered a multipurpose oil spill recovery and support vessel becoming the largest Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) designed vessel ever built in Turkey.

Towing provision will often be on the list of operational requirements for multipurpose vessels designed to counter oil spills and in the case of Kuwait Oil Company’s newbuild Koc Al Zour is just one of many features on a vessel briming with capabilities and described by RAL as the most capable such vessel Kuwait Oil Company has ever invested in.

RAL’s RAmpage 6000-ZM design was chosen for the role and while having the ability of an emergency response vessel it also includes supply duties in its repertoire. The DPequipped vessel has a standard twin ASD configuration delivering a bollard pull of 48.15t and free running speed (ahead) 13.29kn from Yanmar main and auxiliary engines. It is equipped to undertake oil spill response, containment and recovery operations along with area surveillance, offshore firefighting, back flush duties, towing, rescue services and logistics supply duties. It also has a recovery storage system allowing oil transfer to barges and/or shore facilities. Hull shape and the optimised location of anti-roll tanks ensures that best sea-keeping behaviour is achieved while on standby at sea for long periods. Its area of operation is described as ‘the area around Kuwait and nearby international waters.’

Specification details for Koc Al Zour include: LOA (including fenders) 60m, beam moulded 14m, depth 7.3m, maximum draught (navigational) 5.5m. Tank capacities are listed as: fuel oil 325m3, potable water 225m3, recovered oil 758m3, ballast 356m3, firefighting foam 7.2m3. The vessel is classed by LR and carries the notation: * 100 A1 Oil Recovery, Offshore Supply Ship, Fire-Fighting Ship 1 (2,400m3/hr) with water spray, DP (AM), * LMC, UMS.

The choice of a RAmpage design illustrates the versatility of an already well-established class more commonly found as an offshore support tug. It was developed to address demands for high-performance towing, anchor-handling tugs for offshore terminal and oil-field support duties but without reverting to the larger offshore support and anchorhandling vessels often allocated. Ranging in size from 37m to 65m in length, company literature indicates bollard pulls between 90t and 120t, the marque available with Z-drive or twin screw propulsion in diesel-mechanical, diesel-electric or diesel-hybrid configurations.

International Salvage Union (ISU) annual statistics report weaker industry revenues and a dramatic fall in wreck removals, its president expressing concern at the industry’s long-term viability as it is today.

Gross revenues for ISU members dropped from 2019’s figure of US$482 million to US$301 million in 2020 involving 182 services compared to 216 in the previous year. Lloyd’s Open Form cases and revenues saw a slight increase in 2020 to 40 cases returning US$60 million compared with 35 and US$49 million in 2019. Described as ‘significant’ the decline in wreck removal income saw figures of US$98 million from 52 services in 2020, down from US$284 million from 101 services in 2019.

The figures translate into a 38% fall in income but it is the fall in wreck removal income that stands out recording a 65% drop.

It is recognised that on an annual basis, activity and income is variable, something

that is enhanced by the economic pressure on the salvage industry and the general trend towards a smaller number of larger and more complex cases.

ISU president Richard Janssen states: “There has also been some structural change in the industry in the last 18 months with the loss of a major player. That may have had an impact on these statistics but it is not possible to say for certain or to what extent.”

Adding: “Professional salvors protect the environment, reduce risk and mitigate loss.

so clearly in front of the world’s media with the refloating of the containership Ever Given in the Suez Canal this year. But there also has to be a concern about the ongoing provision of salvage services globally and the long-term viability of the industry as it is today. ISU continues to actively engage with shipowners and insurers to ensure we are aligned with them on the future challenges they are likely to face.”

Any reduction in salvage capability will be of concern to the shipping industry and indeed should be to society as a whole given the potential environmental and economic damage from ship casualties. DNV CONFIRMS TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF WINDGRID In late June, leading international classification society DNV confirmed the technical feasibility of Norwegian outfit Odfjell Oceanwind’s WindGrid system

HYBRID SOLUTION In basic terms, WindGrid is a hybrid solution that uses Mobile Offshore Wind Units (MOWUs) to provide an uninterrupted power supply to micro-grids. The system employs an innovative combination of floating wind turbines, battery energy storage, grid converters and controllers that enable it to act as a supplement to renewable energy sources, primarily to avoid the need to run natural gas turbine and diesel generators on idle just in case the renewable source drops out. As Per Lund, CEO at Odfjell Oceanwind, explains, the system enables operators to stop running such generators on a micro-grid during periods of peak wind power production, where there is sufficient renewable power generation.

“The system takes over control of the micro-grid in periods of renewable energy production - and hands the control back to the fossil fuel generators when, for example, the wind is dropping,” he says.

VERIFICATION PROCESS As part of the in-depth verification process, DNV drew on the expertise of technical units across the whole Group. In doing so, it carried out a thorough technical assessment of each component of the WindGrid system and ran through a HAZID (Hazard Identification) process to identify hazards that could prevent successful implementation. The multi-disciplinary DNV team also conducted a verification of the estimated wind power production - as well as the corresponding estimated fuel savings and CO2 emission reductions for oil and gas installations connected to the integrated system.

In Lund’s view, the comprehensive verification of systems like WindGrid is vitally important because power systems on micro-grids like oil and gas installations ‘are critical for the safety and reliability of the operations.’

“What the WindGrid system does has never been tried before in marine applications. It is therefore essential to carry out extensive verifications to create sufficient comfort around the solution,” he says.

“In addition to confirming the feasibility of the system, the verification study helped us to identify the main risks - as well as how to mitigate these in order to further improve the solution as we move into the detailed engineering and execution phases,” he adds.

DNV revealed that expected reductions in CO2 emissions for North Sea applications of the system ‘are in the range of 6070%’ when compared to the generation of electricity from conventional gas turbines. So, what exactly is the WindGrid system - what technology does it use, and how does it work in practice? What did the recent DNV verification process entail? And what are the next steps for the development and deployment of the system in the coming years?

NEXT STEPS Moving forward following the successful verification of the system, Lund reveals that Odfjell Oceanwind now plans to include WindGrid on its fleet of Mobile Offshore Wind Units - and confirms that the system has the potential to ‘increase the effect of wind energy on micro-grids like oil and gas installations from approximately 30% to 60-70%.’

“Odfjell Oceanwind will continue to mature the solution in close collaboration with its clients.

The plan is to have the first MOWUs with WindGrid operational in 2024,” he says.

MARINE RENEWABLES DTOceanPlus (2018-2021) with a total budget of 8 million euros, has developed and demonstrated a suite of second-generation advanced design tools for the selection, development, and deployment of ocean energy systems.

The consortium was formed to bring together representatives of all key user and stakeholder groups and developers of Europe’s leading ocean energy subsystems, devices, and arrays. Two US institutions also took part in the project. Users of the DTOcean+ suite of tools will be able to generate designs for innovative ocean energy technologies and deployments. These designs are optimised for a wide variety of key metrics including lifetime costs, reliability, availability, maintainability, survivability, performance, environmental impact and socio-economic impact. They also balance technological and financial risk which, in combination with greatly improved cost effectiveness, ensure that ocean energy technologies become significantly more commercially attractive.

The functional requirements of the software suite were developed considering both the expectations of potential users, identified during a consultation phase, and the functionalities not covered by the various

tools available on the market. Feedback from the DTOcean project has also proved very valuable. Standalone versions of the different tools were first developed: the core functionality of each individual tool or module was complete and could run independently. In order to provide additional valuable results to the users, the whole software was integrated and data flow between modules were optimised. Then, real scenarios were run by the industrial partners of the project

demonstrating the applicability of the tools to concept generation and selection, technology development, farm deployment and optimisation. The final public release of the open-source software will be at the end of August 2021. To support the future users in their various uses of the suite, project partners are preparing tutorials and user guides that will be released at the same time.

A new report looks at how oil and gas infrastructure can be repurposed for offshore green and blue hydrogen production in the UK Continental Shelf.

The Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council (SOWEC) report, commissioned by engineering and technical consultancy Vysus Group, provides an overview of the existing policy and regulatory landscape and cost estimates for necessary supply chain and infrastructure. It also compares options for onshore and offshore production.

The report reviews capacity and interest amongst developers to support hydrogen production growth from late 2020s to 2050s.

OFFSHORE FLOATING SOLAR PROJECT FIRST Bureau Veritas has given Approval in Principle (AiP) to an offshore floating solar technology for the first time.

The AiP was given to Dutch renewable energy company SolarDuck for its offshore floating solar solution ‘King Eider’, designed to help meet zero emission goals.

Koen Burgers, CEO of SolarDuck, said: “Bureau Veritas is a key name in the maritime industry, and well known for their certification of maritime structures. We are immensely grateful for their support and cooperation on certifying our technology and setting standards for the Offshore Floating Solar industry.”

Strong floating structure Launched in April, SolarDuck’s first pilot ‘King Eider’ consists of four triangular-shaped units, which are mounted by 156 solar panels and deliver a combined electrical output of 64 kWp to the grid. The project was deployed in IJzendoorn, in the Netherlands. The structure holds the solar panels more than three meters above water level. The platform is designed to

handle coastal sea conditions and hurricane-force winds. It is also optimised for offshore sites in estuaries, natural harbours, as well as near-shore sites.

Bureau Veritas was involved in the project from the design stage. The AiP covers the design methodology of the unit’s structure and validates the relevant parts against guidance note NI631 on the Certification Scheme for Marine Renewable Energy Technologies, and NI572 on the Classification and certification of floating offshore wind turbines. These guidance notes provide the requirements to certify novel marine renewable energy technologies.

5kg FIRE EXTINGUISHER CABINET A new IP56 ingress rating fire extinguisher cabinet is set to launch in September The JB84 cabinet from Jo Bird is designed to store the vast majority of 5Kg CO2 portable fire extinguishers as well as taller 12Kg/litre fire extinguishers.

The overall dimensions are very close to the long running JB01 and the JB84l will replace both the standard JB01 and the JB01R versions. The JB01 has always been one of the best sellers in the Jo Bird range so why change it?

Because the technology has moved on through intensive R&D, which means the new model has a stronger door design with a higher standard of finish but equally important, uses closed moulds to reduce both VOC airborne pollution and waste during the production process. This helps Jo Bird towards the 50% CO2 reduction target pledge by 2030.

The cabinet back has a greater radius on the top corners to improve the strength of the structure without increasing the weight. By having a more rigid back and door, it has been possible to increase the door aperture size without compromising the high IP56 ingress rating. This makes it even easier to remove the fire extinguisher in an emergency when every second counts.

Just like the new JB80, the door features the robust rotary handle with the anti-tamper facility and anti-microbial Biomaster® additive. This combines superb reliability as well as fast access by simply turning the handle and pulling towards you. This is simple to operate even when wearing gloves and the handle is easy to spot with the contrast of yellow against charcoal grey. No messing with fiddly catches.

The design uses corrosion resistant materials throughout to provide virtually maintenance free service but has the added benefit of being lightweight through its construction from Lloyds approved composite materials.

In common with the other models in the Firebird range, the JB84 can be customised with other colours, windows and fire retardant materials along with alternative lettering.

It is designed to be bulkhead/wall mounted but can be supplied with posts for free standing support.

BOLD SOLAR BOAT VOYAGES TO ALASKA An electric boat that runs virtually endlessly on solar power - that’s the dream that’s been driving David and Alex Borton for the last 17 years Since 2004, the father-and-son team has been working to fulfil their vision, building several custom, patented, solarelectric boats under the brand name of Solar Sal. This summer, the two of them completed what they believe to be the first-ever solar-electric boat voyage from Bellingham, Washington, to Juneau, Alaska.

They departed on Tuesday, 25 May, in their 27-ft wooden hull solar boat Wayward Sun and made landfall at Ketchikan, Alaska, 13 June, then continued up the coast at a more leisurely pace to Glacier Bay and Juneau, concluding the voyage on 8 July.

The electric boat is powered 100 per cent by solar energy with no fossil-fuel combustion engine at all on board. “People always ask us if we have any gas or diesel back up,” said Alex Borton, “but the sun rises every day. If our batteries get too low, we just wait.”

Wayward Sun, built by Devlin Boat in Olympia, WA, is propelled by a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 electric pod drive with six Torqeedo Power 24-3500 lithium batteries. There is a separate 12-volt system for lights, electronics and other DCpowered systems and an inverter for occasional AC loads, like making waffles. The batteries are charged from a 1700Watt array of solar cells on the boat’s rooftop.

“The solar-electric system has more than exceeded our expectations,” said Alex Borton. “During the 45-day passage from Bellingham to Glacier Bay to Juneau, we were underway for 38 days. We averaged 32 nautical miles per day at an average speed of 3.7 knots. While some days we stopped early or left late because of weather, there were only two full days we didn’t travel at all due to high winds or dense fog.

“Even on a completely overcast day this time of year, we can travel at 2-3 knots during daylight hours without drawing on our batteries at all,” Borton said. “With direct sunlight, we can do 5 knots or more all day without any battery use. “Most electric boats on the market today are limited by their battery capacity, which means they have to return to shore power to charge,” explained Borton. “Until recently,

solar panels and batteries were just not capable of severing the tie to shore power, so it was only functional for extending range or for partial charging. But now, thanks to advances in solar cells and Torqeedo’s efficient electric drives and highcapacity batteries, it’s possible to produce a solar boat with reasonable speeds and accommodation that can continuously cruise without ever charging from the shore. If I had more time I would keep going for another 1000 miles.”

They navigated from Bellingham to Ketchikan using the inside passage, anchoring at night since they were not permitted to go ashore in British Columbia due to Canadian Covid-19 travel restrictions. “That was no problem for us,” said Borton. “We had lots of food, a cosy cuddy for sleeping below deck. And, of course, our solar boat doesn’t need refuelling.”

After a number of discussions with the customer UK-based pollution control

equipment supplier Zwanny Ltd came up with the P boom - a lightweight but strong boom that is easy to install as a permanent installation and one that is able to contain oil but would also be able to cope with floating river rubbish. The boom has been in use since December 2013 and is working very well - exactly what the customer expected from a high-quality product provided by Zwanny.

A BUSY YEAR IN FLOATING SCAFFOLDING A year ago an innovative new system called ScaffFloat was launched into the market, combining custom plastic floats with standard scaffold components The modular and cost-effective structural system can make pontoons, lifting barges and temporary workboats that are available to hire for commercial projects, bridge works, marine civils and a wide range of other applications.

The system has been launched by WorkFloat, the company behind the folding Workboat that fits in a shipping container and who won the EMCA award for innovation at the last Seawork show.

They currently make two patented floats, the small one is 0.5m3 and the larger one is 1m3. The floats are specifically designed to fit with standard scaffold lattice beams and tubes to provide a very wide range of floating solutions. And it is this versatility that has proved a hit with their customers, as each pontoon can be customised to meet their exact requirements.

The capabilities of the system are rapidly expanding as the team behind the system take on larger and more complex projects. The ScaffFloat system comes as standard with a heavy duty wood deck, full handrails and kickboards compliant with TG20 and a full set of structural, buoyancy and stability calculations by their naval architect with approved load cases for each job. There are then a wide range of bolt on extras that include engine pods, deck winches, anchor windlass, spud legs, lifting a-frames and cranes, launch wheels, ballasting for sub sea lifting .. to name but a few.

So far this year the team have worked on multiple projects and have already amassed an impressive list of clients that range from the Royal Navy and Network Rail to Save the Children and the Environment Agency.

Moffatt & Nichol is ramping up its reputation as a construction expert.

The National Academy of Construction (NAC) has elected Eric A. Nichol, president, CEO (above), and chairman of the board of directors of Moffatt & Nichol as a member of its class of 2021. He will be formally inducted in October, during the NAC annual meeting.

In electing Nichol, NAC cited him as an “innovative executive leader with expert knowledge in seismic and structural analysis of waterfront designs with vast experience in public-private, governmental, and professional organizations”.

General Secretary of the Academy, Wayne Crew, said: “Eric Nichol is a most deserving new member. His contributions in earthquake engineering, seismic projects, bridge design, and maritime facilities are only part of his international influence. We welcome him.”

Career highlights Nichol began his career at Moffatt & Nichol in 1980 as a part-time labourer. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering, a master’s in earthquake engineering and a PhD in structural engineering.

He has been involved in seismic retrofit projects in Southern California. He also helped with bridge design projects for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

He has worked on maritime and waterfront facilities along the East Coast and in the United Arab Emirates.

Since being elected president of Moffatt & Nichol in 2006, the company has tripled in size.

Why are temporary works so important?

Temporary works cannot just be thrown together to get the job done, particularly if tidal or fluvial water flow is involved, said Kaymac. The same care and attention to detail must be applied to the temporary works as they are to the final construction.

In addition to having a serious impact on the on the permanent structure, poorly designed and badly planned temporary works can cause injury or harm to the work team, result in project delays, and severely impact the project’s overall budget.

Kaymac said it understands that temporary works in marine projects are vital to the success of contractors’ plans, so it trains and employs CITB qualified in-house temporary works coordinators.

QUICK TURNAROUND FOR SAFETY CRITICAL PORT SIMULATOR The new equipment, including full training, was delivered in the space of only six weeks, despite difficulties created by the pandemic.

The company also helped to specify a room to accommodate the 10-screen simulator in The Bristol Port Company’s newly renovated training centre, which includes an instructor operator station to help with remote access and control of the main simulator functions and scenarios.

Amir Khosh, commercial and project manager at ST Engineering Antycip, was on-site to oversee the installation and head up the subsequent training.

“The Bristol Port Company is a major port in the UK, and in order to boost safety and productivity on site they required this state-of-the-art training device which will help shape future training and industry standards,” he said.

Using simulators for operator training gives another dimension to the training conducted at the port, allowing operators with diverse skill sets and backgrounds to conduct progressive training in a safe and risk-free environment.

“This strategic win will help ST Engineering Antycip engage in more commercial applications in the Port industry,” said Khosh. “Together with CM Labs, we will be supporting The Bristol Port Company in achieving great results with their newest training tool.”

He added: “It was very challenging process but with great team effort and collaboration, we managed to commission the simulator, train the team effectively, and efficiently get them operational as soon as possible.”

Nick Venn, training manager at The Bristol Port Company, originally approached ST Engineering Antycip in 2019 in the hopes of finding an effective approach to take his teams’ training to the next level.

“We’re very happy with our results thus far,” Venn said. “We have introduced several candidates to the Ship-to-Shore simulator module with great success. The training instructors have embraced this new technology in an efficient, comprehensive manner and have already undertaken custom training exercises which suit our crane set-up at the port.”

By replicating incidents and accidents seen throughout the industry on the simulator, the team at The Bristol Port Company can now highlight the essential learning outcomes to prevent future mistakes. Above all, it allows the trainees to develop a comprehensive skillset in a safe, controlled learning environment prior to entering what is undoubtedly a challenging, busy, and demanding work environment for operators.

“Candidates gain both the knowledge and practical skills required to successfully operate live plant and equipment without the risk of making mistakes or the pressure of meeting time restraints often present in operations,” explained Venn.

The simulator in question - a top-of-the-line 10-screen Vortex Master Simulator with motion platform seat - is capable of running many different types of port equipment training modules, such as the Mobile Harbour Crane (MHC) training

module; The Ship to Shore (STS) Crane training module; the Rubber Tyre Gantry (RTG) Crane training module; and the Ship Pedestal Crane (SPC) training module. The content and full solution was provided by Montreal’s CM Labs.

“We showcased the simulators for Nick’s senior operators at ST Engineering Antycip’s demo facility in Adderbury, Oxfordshire,” said Khosh. “After receiving fantastic feedback and speaking with some other active clients, Nick gave us the green light to start working on a proposal and ROI documents to show the value to his senior management.

Considering the pandemic and travel restrictions, The Bristol Port Company recognised the value of our training tool and signed a 5-year support agreement with ST Engineering Antycip for a 10-screen port simulator.”

ST Engineering Antycip received the Purchase Order from The Bristol Port Company mid-April 2021 and delivered the full solution by the third week in May, with all training conducted immediately, meaning that the entire process from Purchase Order to fully trained staff was under six weeks.

“With the pandemic and lockdown, it was difficult to book a site survey, but we managed to overcome this by safely coordinating a visit to site,” said Khosh. “This allowed us to de-risk and plan for any health and safety hazards in advance.

In the end, delivering the project went very smoothly.”

Venn added: “With a professional approach to delivery and extensive knowledge of the simulator capabilities, Amir’s support was particularly valuable to the team. The simulator images are really impressive. When you are fully immersed in the simulator programme, you experience an ‘on-the-job’ feel preparing you for the real-life scenarios to follow.

“It is too early to fully gauge how the simulators translate to saving for us, given the time scale, but the cost of using the live crane and the fact we can have continuity of training regardless of shipping vessel availability will certainly translate in savings across the board.”

ARE ECDIS SYSTEMS BEING USED CORRECTLY? An investigation of recent vessel groundings has led Danish and UK authorities to ask searching questions about current ECDIS training and system design In investigations of groundings since 2008 in which Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) were the primary means of navigation, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) and Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board (DMAIB) identified a mismatch between the way ECDIS was used and the intention of performance standards and system design. This prompted the MAIB and the DMAIB to study ECDIS use from the perspective of practitioners.

The aim of the study was to generate an understanding of the practical application and usability of ECDIS and support future ECDIS design, training strategies and the development of best practices. The study followed a qualitative methodology, primarily based on semi-structured interviews with 155 ECDIS users and observation data gathered between February and July 2018 during sea voyages in European waters on 31 ships of various types.

In a joint statement, Oessur Hilduberg, Head of the DMAIB and Andrew Moll, Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents, MAIB said: “Investigation of groundings since 2008 have repeatedly shown that where ECDIS was the primary means of navigation it was not being used to its full potential. There was a significant mismatch between the intention of the performance standards and system designers, and the way the watchkeepers were using the system. This study set out to understand whether the findings of accident investigations could be extrapolated as representing the wider marine industry and, if so, why.

“Unsurprisingly, the study found a wide spectrum of ECDIS integration and usage, and users were unanimous that the real-time positioning provided by ECDIS was a major contributor to safe navigation. However, thereafter the picture was bleak. Despite being in service for nearly two decades ECDIS could, at best, be described as being in its implementation phase. Specifically, most of the automated functions designed to alert the watchkeeper to impending

dangers were not easy to use and lacked the granularity for navigation in pilotage waters. The consequent high false alarm rate eroded confidence in the automated warning, and most operators disabled the alarms or ignored alerts.

“To be an effective tool for safe navigation, ECDIS needs a high degree of operator input but many watchkeepers appeared to have limited understanding of the systems they were using, and in the main only used them to the extent they felt necessary. Current system shortcomings, compounded by limited bathymetry data, make safe navigation challenging and do not augur well for future automation of the navigation function.

“The study does not make specific recommendations but is intended to act as a catalyst for change. Improvements can be made at every level.”

The Maritime Progress ‘Vital Actions to be Taken On-board Survival Craft’ manual has been updated with the latest legislation, guidance and best practice.

“All crew members should be given the opportunity to read this book and be made aware of it as part of their Emergency Survival Training,” said Maritime Progress.

This recently revised and reprinted survival booklet contains information essential to survival if the time comes to

abandon ship and take to a lifeboat or liferaft.

This includes making effective use of the equipment provided and adopting the correct procedures.

The LSA Code Chapter IV requires survival craft to carry a survival manual with instructions on how to survive.

The survival Booklet (PB1201Z) is printed on waterproof material for storage in both lifeboats and liferafts and has been developed in accordance with IMO Resolution A.657(16) - Instructions for action in survival craft.

FIRE DETECTION FOR HARSH ENVIRONMENTS Hochiki life safety products are helping Margate offshore Wind Farm meet its fire detection obligations KM Security Solutions are the contractors responsible for the security, fire safety and evacuation systems on board the offshore and onshore substations, and for them life safety is the number one priority and all systems must be reliable in the harsh conditions encountered offshore.

Dan Smith, Technical Services Manager for KM Security Solutions explains: “The constant change in weather combined with sea-salt spray makes offshore wind farms an incredibly hostile environment to work in, not only for people but also for the systems, cabling and devices that help to run it and keep it safe. Therefore, it’s imperative we install life safety devices that won’t let the teams and premises down in an emergency.”

“You need to ensure that the life safety products you install are fit for purpose and more importantly weatherproof. The Hochiki products specified are designed to be waterproof and have lasted extremely well. Which is incredible considering the environment they are operating in.”

For this project Visual Alarm Devices (VADs) combined with the CHQ-WPK Weatherproofing Kit, IP-rated manual call points and the Hochiki FIREvac Voice Alarm system was installed across the windfarm’s sub-stations. As well as being simple to install, one of the USPs of Hochiki Life Safety devices is the flexibility to be able to operate alongside other brand products via Hochiki’s open protocol, ESP. Although Hochiki do manufacture their own fire control panels, such as the L@titude platform, in the case of the Margate Wind Farm project, a control system was already in place, and it was the devices which needed the upgrade.

The other benefit is the fact that Hochiki provide isolating devices. When you consider the scale of a life safety system

on board a Wind Farm Rig, you can imagine the chaos that would ensue should part of the system fail. “Failures can arise from parts of the system experiencing erosion from the weather, where plastic parts can break down, allowing water ingress, causing short-circuits which could impact the entire life safety system onboard. Using isolating devices prevents an entire system from going down, isolating only the part that has failed, saving time, money, and materials.”

Bulker operator wins Search and Rescue award The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore has announced that shipping industry giant Thome Group has won its ‘Outstanding Contribution to Search and Rescue Efforts in 2020’ award.

The MPA of Singapore was impressed with Thome’s rescue operation involving one of its managed vessels, the KSL Santiago.

By working closely with the US Coast Guard, the crew of the bulker managed to rescue two people from a sailboat that had been disabled by bad weather 300 nautical miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

In the announcement the MPA of Singapore praised the actions of the Master and crew of the KSL Santiago which immediately changed course to go to the rescue of the sailing boat after having

received a weak Mayday message. The bulker also answered a call from a search and rescue crew aboard a C-130 Hercules aircraft asking for assistance with the rescue.

Thankfully no injuries were sustained by the rescued sailors who were able to access ss the KSL Santiago via an embarkation ladderr lowered by the crew.

Although the award was not presented in n person due to the current pandemic restrictions in Singapore, the MPA will be sending Thome Group a certificate and letters of appreciation to crew members.

“I am really proud of the way the Master and crew of the KSL Santiago reacted in thiss emergency situation,” said Olav Nortun, Chief ef Executive Officer of the Thome Group. “While ile we do train for these sorts of eventualities, it

is gratifying to know that our action plans and procedures in a real-life emergency situation have resulted in a successful outcome,” he added.

UNMANNED LIFEBOAT COULD LAUNCH FROM TURBINES A start-up developing a complete lifesaving system for offshore energy, has partnered with naval architect Chartwell Marine to deliver a first in class remotely operated rescue vessel The ‘Survivor Class’ vessel will be the cornerstone of Zelim’s wider offshore rescue system, incorporating search technology & remote operations.

Offshore energy sites present a hazardous environment for personnel and vessel crews, where there is always a risk of man overboard (MOB) incidents. However, traditional approaches to search and recovery are unsuitable for many offshore facilities.

In an environment where every second counts, the challenges presented by growing offshore industries highlight a crucial need to rethink existing rescue processes.

The increasing distance of projects from shore renders traditional maritime support ineffective. Lifeboats can take several hours to reach the site of the emergency, and even rescue helicopters can take well over an hour. Additionally, offshore windfarms typically lie out of the normal operating zones of such rescue vessels, rendering rescue procedures even more challenging. Following consultations with key offshore survival organisations to address these critical lifesaving issues, Zelim and Chartwell’s ‘Survivor Class’ unmanned rescue vessel introduces an essential new stage in the rescue chain, rapidly recovering MOBs and providing them with an accessible safe haven from the debilitating effects of coldwater immersion, where they can await evacuation to shore.

The vessel has been designed ‘casualty first’, with accessible features to address limited mobility challenges, such as a pioneering rescue conveyor for recovering MOBs from the water, easy-open door handles, an air-conditioned cabin, and a helicopter pick up zone. Meanwhile, as an unmanned, remotely operated vessel, crucial deployment time is reduced, while also limiting collateral risk for rescue personnel.

After contesting a competitive bid process, the consortium secured Innovate UK funding on two separate occasions, accelerating project timelines to complete the preliminary design phase. The last tranche of funding is being used to deliver the full design and shipyard tender, build oversight and testing.

The vessel will be mounted onto offshore structures and deployed into the water via a 25m free fall following MOB or helicopter downing incidents. To maximise safety in severe weather conditions, Chartwell Marine used its hull form expertise to produce a vessel operable in significant wave heights of 4.5m, verified with extensive model testing conducted by independent naval architect Seaspeed Marine Consulting.

Inside the Water Jet Shiphandler’s Guide by John Kinkela are descriptions and pictures of the various parts of water jet propulsion and control systems. Also included are explanations and suggestions on how to make full use of the remarkable maneuvering potential that water jet

propulsion offers, followed by an explanation of how to efficiently and safely make use of the higher speeds that water jet vessels can obtain. Last, there is an extensive glossary of terms typically used in the community of high-speed water jets.

After a US Navy carer, the book’s author John Kinkela came ashore to teach highspeed navigation and water jet shiphandling for the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship. John has been an instructor at the US Navy’s Surface Warfare Officer’s School in Newport, Rhode Island, since 2014.

We have previously been a main supplier of bridge solutions to many shipping companies, and it is incredibly motivating to see the reception we have received from former customers after touching base about the new investment” says Sveinung.

RHINE WORKBOAT IS A “JACK OF ALL TRADES” The 33.25m by 7.4m traffic control boat Emmerich, drawing 1.05m, was actually delivered in 2020 by Elbe small boat yard Bolle for service with the Rhine office of the government’s Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV).

The naming of the multi-functional newbuild - already tagged a ‘jack of all trades’ - was delayed by Covid. But it has meanwhile proved itself on the Central German Rhine near the Dutch border.

Experience to date with the newbuild is described as “completely positive” and when WSV Rhein office head Birgitta Beuel named the boat in August she said it was already making a significant contribution to trouble-free Rhine shipping.

After just a year, Emmerich is already regarded as one of the most eco-friendly and cleanest boats in the WSV fleet as far as climate and environmental protection are concerned.

None of which is surprising given that Emmerich was conceived and built by Bolle, WSV and Innoship engineers specifically as a prototype for a series of future-oriented workboats equipped for eco- system change later if required.

It is an improved and modified version of similar Rhine boats and incorporates the technical knowledge and practical experience gained with those earlier vessels. Its workload is extensive. It includes wreck and obstacle recovery, the setting of fixed and floating shipping markers and their maintenance and repair.

AFAI Southern Shipyard has successfully delivered a pair of Incat Crowther 35 crew transfer vessels (CTV), said to be the first hybrid CTVs in operation with zero-emission capability.

The MHO Asgard and MHO Apollo will service the Hornsea Project 2 offshore wind farm for Ørsted and are the third and fourth Incat Crowther-designed vessels for MHO & Co, following on from MHO Esbjerg and MHO Gurli.

“MHO Asgard and MHO Apollo demonstrate Incat Crowther’s growing reputation for collaboration with operators and developers of new propulsion technologies, delivering fully-integrated solutions based on proven platforms,” said Ed Dudson, managing director of Incat Crowther Europe.

The CTVs’ propulsion system, developed in collaboration with Danfoss and Volvo Penta, comprises a pair of diesel drivetrains and a pair of diesel-electric drivetrains, each driving Volvo Penta IPS drives.

The main diesel engines are Volvo Penta D13s, producing 515kW each and the

generators used for the diesel-electric propulsion train are Volvo Penta D8-MH units. A further three of these units are located in the hulls amidship, alongside a Volvo Penta D5 used as a harbour generator. Additionally, a Corvus battery system provides stored power for zero-emission operation.

The vessels can operate in electric mode for up to eight hours or in combination with diesel propulsion for a maximum speed of 25 knots. Each has accommodation for 24 persons and a 110m2 foredeck with multiple tie-downs, deck crane, moon pool and the capability to take Bring-to-Work systems.

NEW FIREBOATS ADD CLOUT TO HAMBURG PORT FLEET The hulls of the two new boats were built at Damen’s Kozle, Poland facility. Superstructures and electrical systems were added at the parent company in the Netherlands.

Costing some €19 million, the sister newbuilds are specifically designed to complement the impressive 43.5m German-built fire-fighting ship Branddirektor Westphal and secure port areas and structures which the big ship cannot access.

The bigger boat coat costing €18 million - nearly as much as the two smaller newbuilds put together - and was billed on entering service in late 2018 as the most powerful firefighting vessel in Europe. Working for the HPA and the local fire services it was built to cope with multi-storey modern container ships at some of Germany’s biggest container terminals.

Branddirektor Westphal’s water and foam cannon systems project 120,000 litres a minute to a height of 110m over 180m.

Dresden and Prag are much less powerful with water cannon capacity of just 30,000 litres a minute over 110m. But their smaller size means they can be used not just for fire-fighting but also to tackle other jobs like bridge inspection and maintenance, water supply, rescue and recovery, technical assistance and environmental protection.

The HPA said the newbuilds were being used for trial operation and crew training prior to entering regular service at the end of the year. Dresden will go into full-time charter with the Fire Service while Prag will see multi-functional service with the HPA, Fire Service and other clients.

Each also has two Schottel SCD 150 380kW rudder propellers and an STT 60 FP 100kW transverse bow thruster. The plug in drive battery systems are from EST-Floattech and auxiliary systems include a Caterpillar C32 firefighting set, a HEILA HLRM 16 3S deck crane and hydraulically controlled diving and working platforms.

Hydrogen pioneer The world’s first commercial vessel powered 100% by hydrogen fuel cell has been launched.

Sea Change is a 70ft, zero-emissions, hydrogen fuel cell-powered, electric-drive ferry that will operate in the California Bay Area. Built by All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) and owned by SWITCH Maritime (SWITCH), the ferry will be the first hydrogen fuel cell vessel in the US. “Hydrogen-fuel cell technology will prove to be a robust alternative to conventional powertrain technologies,” said Ron Wille, AAM president & COO. “AAM is continuing our tradition of building vessels on the leading edge of technology using advanced propulsion methods, which is why we are so proud to have to

completed construction on such a revolutionary vessel.”

Now undergoing operational trials, the ferry is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell power package provided by Zero Emissions Industries (formerly Golden Gate Zero Emission Marine), comprised of 360kW of Cummins fuel cells and Hexagon hydrogen storage tanks with a capacity of 246 kg.

This system is integrated with 100kWh of lithium-ion battery provided by XALT and a 2x 300kW electric propulsion system provided by BAE Systems. The hydrogen fuel cell powertrain system affords the same operational flexibility as diesel with zero emissions and less maintenance.

The vessel design originates from Incat Crowther, and the construction supervision and management has been led by Hornblower Group. The project is funded by private capital from SWITCH, an impact investment platform building the first fleet of exclusively zero-carbon maritime vessels to accelerate the decarbonisation and energy transition of the US maritime sector.

SPECIAL BOATS JOIN GERMAN RESCUE FLEET Germany’s sea rescue service DGzRS was naming two special new boats in September reports Tom Todd The training ship, tagged TS 209, is 22m long, 6.16m wide and draws 1.5m. For three crew and eight trainees, it is based at the DGzRS Baltic rescue training centre in Neustadt. But it will be available to any of the service’s 55 stations along Germany’s nearly 2,400 kms of North Sea and Baltic coasts.

A spokesman told Maritime Journal simply: “There is no similar boat. It will be unique”.

TS 209 has never been intended for rescue. It is a conventional displacement-hulled newbuild for teaching safety and seamanship skills to DGzRS volunteers. The service said those skills included going alongside, towing, manoeuvering, technical navigation such as radar training and collision and encounter - as well as the recovery of injured people from ship interiors.

Although it is the DGzRS’ first pure training ship, TS 209 will complement two 9.5-10.1m Class boats already being used for training. The service has said it will in future also make more use of the biggest cruiser in its fleet, the 46m Hermann Marwede, for training.

No newbuild has, it seems, ever done that before in the 135 year history of the DGzRS The choice of an inland builder for TS 209 is also a first for the DGzRS. The Hermann Barthel Schiffswerft, lies some 250kms up the Elbe and is a builder of specialist boats for, among others, the German Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV).

No newbuild has, it seems, ever done that before in the 165 year history of the DGzRS. The service usually builds its big cruisers at Weser-based Fassmer Werft and its smaller boats at Tamsen Maritim near Rostock. Explaining the decision to go inland for the training ship the DGzRS said Barthel “has a lot of experience in building boats like this”.

by DGzRS spokesman Ralf Baur includes two Cummins QSB6.7 main engines, each of 224kw operating over ZF 286 A gearings with PTO for rudder and fan. Its stern tubes and shafts of 70/80mm, along with 800mm propellers and rudder are from Thies in Rostock, he said.

Additional on-board equipment mentioned by the DGzRs includes a Side Power bow thruster Type SEP250/300TC 24 V of 300kgf, two independent trainee consoles each with its own Raymarine Quantum radar, two AXIOM Pro 16” and IS 70 display for DST 800 sonar and log, an AIS 350 receiver, Navionics charts and two Sailor 6210 FM units for for navigation training.

Unlike the one-off TS 209, much of the equipment on the latest rescue cruiser SK42 is the same as on its predecessors in the DGzRS 28m Class, with refinements added as the series has developed, Baur told Maritime Journal.

SK 42, the last of six in its class since 2015, was also entering service in September after completing final tests in the German Baltic. It is only the second of the Fassmer-built series with a name revealed early to encourage funding and is being called Nis Randers after a popular German sea rescue hero. The name of sister ship SK40-Hamburg was also revealed before naming in 2020.

The 27.9 x 6.2m SK 42, drawing 1.95m, is driven by two MTU 16V 2000 M72 main engines each of 1,440kw developing 24 knots. The engines were built for extreme weather operation and are designed to run during heavy listing or 360° righting.

They operate over ZF 5000 reverse gearings onto fixed propellers.

FERRY TRIO KICKS OFF CANAL UPGRADE PROGRAMME After a slight delay, the first of sixteen 30m eco-friendly hybrid ferries has been delivered for service on the Kiel Canal, writes Tom Todd A spokeswoman for the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) - which is responsible for the canal - told Maritime Journal the Covid pandemic had meant some “operational restrictions” at Baltic Workboats, which is building the first three newbuilds. She stressed however the restrictions had caused only minor delays.

The first of the identical trio, Arlau, had originally been due in spring but did not actually arrive until July after a four day tow from Estonia. It was undergoing final checks at the local WSV and Gebr. Friedrich shipyards, while personnel were doing simulator and docking training. That was being followed by completion of a first new canal landing facility and berthing system.

The delivery of a second ferry was due before the end of summer and a third was expected in autumn, the WSV said.

Funded by the German Government and costing €21 million, the three ferries are being described as the “forerunners of a new generation” of low-emission, eco-friendly cross-canal ferries.

Under a long-term programme to replace old tonnage, some dating back to the1950s, the WSV said it was hoping eventually to retire all sixteen 45 and 100 ton ferries currently in canal service.

The new boats are 9.6m wide, draw maximum 1.48m and have two vehicle lanes of total 23.5m and a load capacity of 45 tons. Each has two Voith Schneider VSP 12R4 cycloidal propellers and a 297kW Volvo diesel. Speed is put at 13kms/h. The WSV said the integrated hub of the power and

drive concept including the generator was a Siemens battery-supported, diesel-electric hybrid system.

Tenders for the remaining 13 newbuilds planned for the canal were being invited as soon as the first three ships have been successfully tested, the WSV told Maritime Journal.

The Kiel Canal is the world’s busiest man-made waterway.

It runs from Brunsbüttel on the North Sea Elbe Estuary near Hamburg to Kiel on the German Baltic, some 98kms. Traffic figures dipped last year because of the pandemic but were up again this year when 13,429 ships of all types passed through the waterway in the first half of 2021.

Foiling ferry developer proposes CTV Grant funding has been awarded to investigate the feasibility of fully electric foiling crew transfer vessels for the offshore wind industry.

A study, led by Northern Ireland maritime design and applied technologies company Artemis Technologies has been awarded £533,000 to investigate transformative solutions to decarbonise crew transfer vessel (CTV) operations in the offshore wind sector.

The grant, announced at London International Shipping Week, has been awarded as part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. Artemis Technologies, which is also in the process of building two fully electric foiling ferries for Belfast, is partnering with Tidal Transit, an experienced CTV owner and operator; ORE Catapult, a research

technology organisation specialising in the offshore renewables sector; and Lloyd’s Register, a globally respected maritime classification society.

It will seek to demonstrate the transformative power of the revolutionary Artemis eFoilerTM electric propulsion system to drive down carbon emissions in global CTV operations.

Technologies said: “Operating for an average of 250 days a year, crew transfer vessels burn around 1,500 litres of diesel a day.

Equating to almost 475,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions across the UK and EU annually, they are a major pollutant.

“With global offshore wind capacity set to soar over the coming decades, including the UK government targeting a four-fold increase by 2030, it is imperative that a solution to decarbonise CTV operations is brought to market quickly.

The study will use digital twin technology and include a full mission simulation of an eFoiler propelled CTV undertaking crew transfer operations, as well as provide a regulatory roadmap towards certification of the technology.

GERMANS PRAISE ECO NEWBUILDS AND ORDER A FIFTH Kiel ferry operator SFK has praised its two new eco ferries and has ordered a fifth as it continues an emission-free fleet upgrade, reports Tom Todd Already in service with SFK (Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel) are the 32m x 8m plug-in hybrid ferry Gaarden and the 27.5 x 6.5m all-electric Düsternbrook.

Operations Manager Michael Maiblom said SFK was “very satisfied” with those two already serving newbuilds from Holland Shipyards. He also told Maritime Journal that “we will of course incorporate detail improvements into sister ships under construction”.

He was referring to the two further plug-in hybrid ferries and a second all-electric ferry now being built at Holland Shipyards. That yard also built Gaarden, delivered in 2020, and Düsternbrook which joined SFK in June this year. SFK has described Düsternbrook as the first all-electric public transport ferry to operate in a North German port.

The two new hybrids, already named Wik and Friedrichsort, are sister ships of Gaarden and for delivery in the first half of 2022, according to the SFK. For delivery at almost the same time and by the end of June next year is SFK’s second ground-breaking all-electric ferry, Wellingdorf, a sister of Düsternbrook.

The three ships under build, as indicated by Michael Maiblom, are likely to reflect technical and other experience gained in the operations of Gaarden and Düsternbrook.

Maiblom told Maritime Journal however that specific technical details of the ships currently under build were not being released just yet.

Despite that, a good picture of the future all-electric Wellingdorf is already taking shape.

SFK itself has said it will be “almost identical” with Düsternbrook and plans have already been revealed to expand the battery capacity on the new ferry by a maximum of three hours a day increasing its operational time from ten to 13 hours. German media report that the same capacity increase is also being considered for Düsternbrook.

Builders Holland Shipyards added that Wellingdorf will be powered by batteries with an installed capacity of 1.092kWh and have 20 roof-located solar panels to help feed the onboard electrical system.

Wellingdorf will cost about €3 million.

Design consultant for new low emission ferries Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited has appointed ferry design consultancy Navalue to lead the concept design of its Small Vessel Replacement Programme.

Navalue will provide consultancy services for the concept design stage of the programme, which will see several small vehicle and passenger vessels replaced on the Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Services network.

CMAL and Navalue will investigate and evaluate the feasibility of designing low emission ferries to be in line with the Scottish Government climate change commitments. The Emissions Reduction Targets (Scotland) Act 2019 states a 2030 target to deliver a reduction of 75% of all harmful emissions, and an ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.

charging technologies and identify onboard electrical energy storage systems, capable of being recharged from shore side electrical power supplies.

DECARBONIZATION STAIRWAY Classification society DNV has released its latest Maritime Forecast to 2050, part of the Energy Transition Outlook (ETO) suite of reports Conceived to help shipowners navigate the technologies and fuels needed to meet global greenhouse gas (GHG) targets, the report features an updated carbon risk management framework, including a new ‘decarbonization stairway’ model to help owners map a path to sustainability.

The 80-page report aims to assist an industry facing the dual challenge of increasingly stringent climate change targets and regulations coupled with uncertainty over future fuel choices, technology, and supply.

It is, according to DNV Maritime CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, “the grand challenge of our time.”

The report maps the shifting regulatory landscape, provides a status update on technology and alternative fuels, and views the energy transition from a wider perspective investigating the financing of green onboard investments, as

well as the need for rapid development of supply-side capacity for new fuels.

To support shipowners, DNV provides an updated framework for managing carbon risk in newbuilding designs, a techno-economic evaluation of fuel strategies, and the vessel design implications of those chosen approaches. The ‘decarbonization stairway’ is introduced to show how individual owners can adapt to stay below the required GHG emission trajectories.

The new Maritime Forecast to 2050 - the fifth edition of its kind - features detailed case studies to help evaluate fuel and technology scenarios and compare competing solutions.

The report finds that the maritime energy transition is already gaining momentum, with around 12% of newbuilds currently ordered with alternative fuel systems. This is double the 6% revealed by DNV’s 2019 Maritime Forecast report. However, less than 1% of ships currently in operation use alternative fuels, with the huge majority plying short-sea routes.

Neptune Marine shipyard. Chartered by Alizée, a joint-venture between Jifmar and Zephyr & Borée, she will be transporting components of the Ariane 6 rocket, Ariane Group, from Europe to French Guyana.

12,000 MILE TEST BED FOR HYBRID POWERED CTVs MHO-Co’s two new crew transfer vessels - MHO Asgard and MHO Apollo - have been put through their paces, having travelled from China to Denmark The 12,000 nautical mile journey was a voyage of discovery for Volvo Penta and Danfoss Editron, with the many lessons learned helping to create a tailor-made solution fit for the owner’s requirements.

The vessels recently arrived at MHO-Co’s headquarters in Esbjerg, Denmark, after making the 12,000 nautical mile journey from China’s AFAI Southern Shipyard. Measuring 34.4 metres in length and with an 11 metre beam, these vessels will be run by operator MHO-Co and service the Hornsea Project 2 offshore wind farm in the North Sea. The vessels’ power system is the result of a collaboration between Volvo Penta and Danfoss Editron. The companies have developed a fully integrated solution made up of a Danfoss Editron electric drivetrain supported by Volvo Penta variable speed gensets that drive two of the first Electric Volvo Penta Inboard Performance System (IPS) units as well as two D13 Volvo Penta IPS units. The new IPS units have already achieved 1,000 hours of operation before even reaching the customer. This impressive milage has given all the teams time to test and adjust the system to create a tailor-made solution that fits the owner’s requirements.

“These systems are a very important first step towards the future of sustainable operations at sea,” says Mik Henriksen, CEO of MHO-Co. “We believe it is our shared responsibility to drive more sustainable solutions in the marine sector, and the best way to do this is through collaboration.”

LISTENING, LEARNING, AND TWEAKING The two companies treated the journey from China to Denmark as a pilot project and a time to work with the captains and crew to tweak the novel technology onboard and make it as reliable and efficient as possible for the customer. The companies were able to test different power combinations, such as diesel-electric operation or diesel-only. In Dynamic Positioning System-mode (DPS-mode) fuel consumption is below 20 litres/hr and can be as low as 17 litres/hr which they claim is ‘exceptional for vessels of this size class’.

All these tests were carried out with the captain and stakeholders, which meant the result was a solution that was fit for purpose for the operator’s requirements. From these initial learnings, the teams have started adapting the drivetrain - not just the motors themselves - to all-electric propulsion needs.

Volvo Penta also worked with captains during the design phase to reimagine existing systems. For example, to take the electric propulsion dimension into account, Volvo Penta created a completely new HMI. To do this, the company worked closely with the captains during the design phase.

Volvo Penta took advantage of options offered by the power of plenty, different kind of captain controls, and reading diagnostics differently to develop the HMI. “The design, build, and delivery of these vessels was all about teamwork and collaboration,” explains Erno Tenhunen, Danfoss Editron’s Marine Director. “Ultimately, these are learning projects on all sides. We are trying to push the limits

of technology, and the best way to do this is to bring our unique ideas, perspective, and knowledge together. That’s exactly what we have done here.”

NEXT STEPS Before the vessels enter operation, batteries are being installed in Denmark to provide stored power for zeroemissions operation. This system will allow the vessels to operate in zero-emission electric mode for up to eight hours or, in combination with diesel propulsion, to achieve a maximum speed of approximately 24 knots. Using multiple modular generators allows operators to tailor power generation to the operational profile and enhance flexibly.

“We’re excited to see these vessels go into action in the North Sea. This pilot project has been hugely beneficial in helping us create the building blocks for future projects,” adds Jacob Vierø, Sales Project Manager, Volvo Penta. “Each operation will be different and require a tailor-made propulsion solution, but this project has allowed us to both develop the technology and collaborative process that can be adapted for future commercial operations.”

Marine technology specialist Subsea Europe Services and US Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) innovator Martac have signed an extensive partnership agreement for cooperation on the delivery of unmanned and autonomous marine survey platforms.

The partnership unites Florida-headquartered Martac’s extensive USV portfolio for defence, commercial and scientific applications with Subsea Europe Services’ hydroacoustic sensors, platforms and solutions expertise, which is available through its established European rental pool, sales and support channels.

The partners aim to make Martac’s high-performance USVs more accessible for defence and marine surveying applications in Europe, with Subsea Europe Services providing added value through deep integration between the USVs and its own integrated technologies, which are designed and proven to simplify and optimise marine data acquisition.
