UZMAR Shipyard and Robert Allan Ltd have signed an agreement to design and build a new series of methanol-fuelled tugboats. The agreement was signed for four new designs between UZMAR CEO Mr. Ahmet Noyan Altuğ and Robert Allan Ltd CEO Mr. Mike Fitzpatrick.

These designs, exclusive to UZMAR, represent a new generation of lower emmision tugs that owner clients are demanding to meet CO2 reduction targets. The spesifications and the name of the series will be unveiled soon.

The new series will have improved energy efficiency and will be able to generate a significant amount of annual CO2 emissions savings.

BRIEFS Ever Forward refloated

DEVELOPING A SMALL CRAFT CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

After a month stuck in the Chesapeake Bay, the sister of the vessel that clogged up the Suez Canal for six days in March 2021 has been refloated.

Ever Forward, owned

by Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen, ran aground on March 13, a year after Ever Given got stuck in the Suez Canal.

Thirty-five days later, after dredging operations and the removal of more than 500 containers, she has been refloated.

Humphree appoints NG Shipyards

Swedish trim and stabilisation systems developer Humphree has appointed the Netherlands-based NG Shipyards as its commercial dealer in the Netherlands.

NG Shipyards will also apply Humphree products to new vessels such as the COS Master, which went into service at the end of 2021 to transport crew to offshore wind farms. “Thanks in part to Humphree’s systems, the comfort on board is considerably higher than with comparable ships,” said NG Shipyards managing director Albert Keizer.

Radio Holland wins service agreement

Radio Holland has been given a service agreement for the entire ALP Maritime fleet, which consists of ten DP II long-distance towing and anchor-handling vessels. “Our ships go everywhere; we never know exactly which ports they will call at,” said ALP chief operating officer Leo M. Leusink. “We need a good and reliable partner for our NavCom equipment to provide high-level and quick response support with global coverage.”

A UK based boatbuilder plans to turn its new premises into a centre of excellence for small craft design, manufacture and service.

Marine Specialised Technology Group (MST) has been embarking on a £1 million (€1.2 million) refurbishment programme at its new home on the banks of the River Mersey.

“We secured these new premises at just the right time as we embark on several major contracts for our flagship “HPB” High-Speed Patrol Boat range which have been, up until now, limited to a maximum 19m in length due to launching and logistical restrictions,” said Philip Hilbert, sales director, MST. ”The new larger facilities with its direct access to water now enables us to not only manufacture more craft at any one time but also to manufacture

significantly larger vessels and we already have a 23m design being worked on as I speak.”

Growth plans MST acquired the Carmet Shipyard from Carmet Tug Company at Bromborough last year for an undisclosed sum.

The refurbishment programme covers the entire 6.5-acre site with total refurbishment of the existing 80m main and 50m secondary boat building halls, brand-new offices, new car parking facilities and the erection of additional composite and fabrication facilities.

MST’s new facilities boast 25T overhead travelling gantry cranes, a 90m 700 tonne slipway that launches directly into the River and a 100T WISE Amphibious Boat Travel Hoist, which provides additional boat launch and recovery facilities and access onto

the hard standing areas.

There is direct water access which provides a huge boost to the group’s dedicated service and maintenance division MST Fleet Services. This, combined with the planned expansion of the company’s newbuild division, will be fuelling a significant recruitment drive through the remainder of 2022.

MST has a long-term plan for further investment which will see the facilities expanded and enhanced even further to create a centre of excellence in the North West for small craft design, manufacture and service.

The company will move its boat building, servicing and maintenance operations to the new site during the second quarter of 2022.

NEW HEAVYLIFT JOINT VENTURE SIGNED A new JV will bolster operations in heavy lifting, marine works and transport in Saudi Arabia.

Netherlands-based Roll Group has agreed a joint venture with the Saudi firm Heavylift FTE for transport, installation and marine works in Saudi.

The firms will operate as one company in Saudi Arabia, under

the name ROLL FTE, and will be based in Dammam with yards in Jubai and Dammam on the east coast and Jeddah and Rabigh on the west coast.

“ROLL FTE’s large fleet of conventional hydraulic axles, SPMT, mobile cranes and various installation equipment will be based in Saudi to deliver

comprehensive door to door solutions,” said Roll Group.

“The joint venture also plans on investing in marine assets, which will be registered and based in Saudi to accommodate the growing number of projects in the country requiring a combined marine and land transportation solution.”

Kotug has announed plans to acquire Seaways International to strengthen its position in global offshore markets.

The intended acquisition of Seaways marks the largest in Kotug’s history and is part of its strategy to expand its business in assisting worldwide floating facilities such as FSO, FPSO, FLNG, FSRU and SPM terminals.

MARINE TECH FIRM ENTERS GREEK MARKET A Scottish marine electronics firm has formed a new partnership in Greece.

Seall has signed a partnership deal with Intermarine Electronics to provide software for its new range of ECDIS products expanding global reach, as well as within the Turkish and Cypriot markets.

“This partnership reflects our vision to continuously drive efficiency and safety improvements in marine navigation, ensuring that a wider range of customers across an ever-growing geographical reach can access our technology to enhance the safety of those at

Better accessibility Intermarine, which is headquartered in Pireaus, Greece, develops, builds and supplies marine electronics equipment to a large range of shipping and ship management companies. It also works with private and governmental organisations, fishing boats and large offshore operators.

While it has marketed an ECDIS system for a number of years and designs and produces all of its hardware in house, the company now wants to update this with a

new product featuring the latest software technology.

Intermarine Electronics will be stocking the first 25 ECDIS systems with the new Seall software next month.

Ioannidis Panagiotis, commercial director, Internarine Electronics, said: “We are delighted to partner with Seall.

Their software is easy-to-use and robust, and we were particularly attracted by the touch screen technology. We look forward to a long-term partnership as we roll-out our systems globally.”

Seall now powers over 38,000 licensed ECDIS products globally.

Peel Ports says it has had its busiest month ever for unaccompanied freight between the UK and France.

The DFDS-run service carried almost 4,000 trailers across the channel in April, it says.

“These record-breaking achievements are a true testament to the increasing capabilities and efficiencies of our operations at London Medway,” said Richard Goffin, Port Director, South East Ports Cluster at Peel Ports.

The ports of Duisberg and Rotterdam have signed a Letter of Intent to renew and expand their co-operation, which goes back to 2020.

The LOI also looks into the possibility of developing hydrogen hubs, with Rotterdam becoming a ‘future gateway’ to Europe and Duisburg the hub for Germany.

“Setting up a physical link between the two is therefore an obvious choice,” the joint statement said.

Firefighting specialist Marine Fire Safety has set up a division in Scotland to serve the whole country and northern England. “The decision is the next phase in our growth strategy and builds on the successes of our service station in Surrey,” said Managing Director Mark Bresnahan. “We have a large customer base in Scotland of fishing, aquaculture, offshore wind and light commercial workboats.”

The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of 2022 - both companies will now work on customary government and other approvals, with the aim of completing the transaction in July 2022.

BRIEFS Geophysical data

Data technology firm CGG has joined the Centre for Geophysical Forecasting in Norway, based at the University of Science and Technology. The new membership means CGG can contribute to the development, modelling, implementation and field testing of a new subsurface imaging and monitoring system designed to support a range of energy transition activities, such as carbon capture and storage management, and geohazard monitoring and forecasting.

Sims has joined Fischer Panda UK to focus on efficiency improvements across the company while supporting marine sales managers. She brings a wealth of experience following a career within senior management level roles.

Dutch heating technology company Alfa Laval has named Tristan Matthews as its new Head of Marine Division for the UK and Ireland.

The position has been created for Matthews, who will be responsible for driving partnerships with customers in the marine industry ’with a strong focus on sustainability, decarbonization, future fuels and alternative technologies’.

Matthews has been with Alfa Laval since 2016, joining from Marine Capital Sales, where he was business unit manager, UK and Ireland.

Matthews’ marine experience is long: he became an apprentice aged 16.

“The changes facing the marine industry now are nothing short of transformational,” he says. “These are not decarbonisation trends, but new directions. ”The unique aspect of the marine industry is that the assets are moving, and this is where our combination of a global brand, physical local presence, combined with our ever-increasing digital presence means we can coordinate support like never before.”

Port digitalisation company Innovez One has appointed Grant Ingram as CEO for the UK and Europe.

Founded by David Yeo in 2004, the company began life in Singapore, and now deploys its digital solutions in ports around the world.

The appointment, says Yeo, cements its presence in the UK, where congestion challenges mean there is a growing need to improve efficiency.

“A number of ports in the UK - and the wider EMEA region - are currently facing major challenges, such as the need to improve their efficiency to tackle congestion, and the necessity to deliver the sustainability progress demanded by their customers, investors and regulators,” said Yeo. “By expanding our local team in the region, we consolidate our global expansion, while also demonstrating our commitment to be close to our clients, truly understand their needs and challenges, and support them on their digital journey.”

The company’s software, MarineM, can help cut the annual mileage in towing and piloting boats by 20%, he believes, by using artificial intelligence to optimise the planning and automation of scheduling and launch operations.

Ingram has joined Innovez One from M9, a London-based IT firm, where he was CEO. Before that he was managing director at DVSI Ltd, an IT infrastructure services company.

Vessel design firm Chartwell Marine has hired two maritime industry veterans to help it with its growth.

Dave Quested, offshore wind veteran and co-founder of CTV designer and builder CTruk and OESV operator CWind, joins in a sales and Business Development position.

Rob Sime, chartered engineer, vessel designer and tester, and hull form optimisation researcher with two decades of experience including at BMT and BAE, has been appointed Principal Naval Architect.

The appointments have been made as Chartwell moves to new premises in Port Hamble to improve waterside access for clients and prepares to launch an expanded offshore wind vessel range internationally.

Chartwell has more than 15 vessels currently in build at yards across Europe and the US.

Norwegian shipowner Eidesvik has promoted two of its staff to the management team as the firm strives to develop zero-emission shipping solutions.

Arve Nilsen is the company’s new chief operating officer, having moved on from his role as technical manager.

He has been with the company for 13 years, and as COO will have overall responsibility for the operation of Eidesvik’s fleet of advanced vessels.

Ellen Sofie Ottesen was Director of Sustainability with Eidesvik and has been with the company for 15 years, holding various management positions.

She becomes chief technology officer, a role ’created to support the company’s strategy of positioning itself at the front end of the development of zeroemission shipping solutions’.

Eidesvik has installed battery hybrid solutions on 11 out of 12 vessels in operation, and says it aims to make its Viking Energy the world’s first offshore supply vessel to operate on ammonia as fuel.

JOHAN INDEN Volvo Penta Johan Inden has been with Volvo Penta for the last eight years, starting in 2014 as Senior Vice President and CTO of the Marine Business Unit, where he was made President in April 2021.

‘Sustainability’ is a word on everyone’s lips these days, and it’s certainly at the heart of how Johan Inden, believes the leisure and commercial boat industry has to move forward.

Legislation is looming, and it means that nothing is off the table for future engineering. It could be anything from renewable fuels, batteries, fuel cells or hybrids, such as in the Kvitbjørn vessel just launched 800 miles south of the North Pole (see page 44), in which Volvo Penta plans to target its integrated helm-to-propeller twin D4-320 DPI Aquamatic hybrid-electric solution at smaller commercial applications, such as crew transfer or patrol boats.

Volvo Penta is even working with Daimler in the fuel cell arena because that will benefit both, Inden says.

“We are investing quite heavily in fuel cells,” he says. “We’re partnering Daimler to see how we can use them in both of our products just to get the scale up and the industry moving.

They are old rivals but we both understand the need to move forward. We are evolving as a group.”

Like so many things, it’s a balancing act – calculating the different energy consumption requirements and use cases for different boats and examining everything from battery capacity and fuel use to tidal concerns.

Preparing for the tipping point Inden believes a tipping point in electrification is nearing, and although he doesn’t have a crystal ball, it’s inevitable.

“When do we see the big switch? When is every boat going to be electric? We will all struggle to pin that down, but we look at it as an exciting pace of change that we are part of.

“Once it was all about electric engines.

Then hybrids were on every TV. In the leisure boat industry it was suddenly, ‘when are we moving to hybrids?’ Now the race has started, it will be a move to general adoption.

“We want to move more into commercial. At the moment it’s about 70% leisure – we want it to be more like 50-50.”

energy sector are really pulling that market – and that boats like the Kvitbjørn are a real first step into it.

And not only will this create more business opportunity, it will also signpost potential legislation.

“IMO legislation affects commercial shopping first, as it did with Tier 3, then downstream it’s leisure vessels. Engaging first in commercial is helping leisure because we know what’s coming,” Inden says.

RESTORATION TO BEGIN ON HISTORIC DOCKS Work is due to begin on restoring the Govan Graving Docks on the River Clyde in Scotland after being closed for more than 34 years The docks, built in the late 19th century by the Clyde Navigation Trust, accommodated some of the largest ships in the world in their heyday, and were used for repairs and refits of Clyde steamers.

Since they were closed in 1987 they have remained unused.

Now, feasibility studies have been carried out by the company leading the restoration, Govan Drydock, which has secured a licence to operate the number one dock for ship repairs and maintenance.

The docks, built in the late 19th century by the Clyde Navigation Trust, accommodated some of the largest ships in the world in their heyday, and were used for repairs and refits of Clyde steamers

The Clyde Docks Preservation Initiative (CDPI), which protects and promotes the maritime heritage of the river, has welcomed the project and has set up the Govan Docks Regeneration Trust to spread awareness about the three docks.

“We call on all public sector agencies: Scottish Enterprise, Glasgow City Council, the Scottish government, as well as potential investors, to get fully behind this project to help ensure it is a success and able to further expand into the

other two dry docks at Govan in the future, as a state of the art, sustainable maritime facility and community hub,” the CDPI says.

The charity says the three dry docks are ‘an outstanding graving dock complex without parallel in Scotland’.

Built from grey granite, some of which was hand carved, the dock is the only one on the Upper Clyde that has not been filled in for modern developments, says the charity.

New deep water terminal announced for remote islands A new multi-purpose deep water terminal is to be built at the Outer Hebrides’ main port in a project ‘which has the potential to truly transform the economy’.

It will provide a berth for vessels up to 360m long with a depth of 10m below the ferry berth of Chart Datum, along with 6.5 hectares of land for unloading, storage and industrial uses, says the Stornoway Port Authority.

It will also have a freight ferry berth and a heavy lift slab at the quayside.

Stornoway is on island of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides archipelago, just off the northwest coast of Scotland, and the largest town on the islands.

“Our consultations show a strong demand from the energy, transport and cruise industries to bring larger vessels in Stornoway

and for adjoining unloading, processing and storage space,” says the authority, whose chairman, Murdo Murray, signed the £49 million (€58.4 million) contract with civil engineers McLaughlin & Harvey.

“The deep water terminal will open a new gateway to the islands for a wide range of sectors and become a catalyst for significant further development here. It is already attracting high levels of interest from potential customers,” said Murray.

“The development will be a game changer for the local economy and for Scotland’s aspirations to grow our renewables and cruise sectors,” said deputy first minister for Scotland John Swinney, who is also chair of the Stornoway Deep Water Terminal Advisory Board.

“The terminal will enable cruise traffic and expansion of the offshore wind leasing round, as well as providing infrastructure for a range of other potential activities.”

PORT, HARBOUR & MARINE CONSTRUCTION 1,000 acres of land could be released for development around UK ports.

Leading UK port operator Associated British Ports has announced another port development on top of two other expansions planned for the UK. The latest release of development land is on the southside of Cardiff city centre, and the company says this will become ‘a catalyst for regeneration’.

Two sites, approximately 13 acres in area within the port of Cardiff, will be large enough to accommodate up to 200,000ft2 (18,500m2) of industrial or logistical development, it says.

The site has a direct rail link which can be extended into the business park to enable transport of freight via the national rail network, and as the sites are within the port, they also have direct access to sea routes and can accommodate deep sea trade.

Cushman & Wakefield and CBRE are advising ABP on the development of the Cardiff sites, which are part of a national initiative by ABP that will see it release more than 1,000 acres to support the UK’s supply chain, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors, including the ones at Southampton and Hull (see next page).

ABP RELEASES LAND AT SOUTHAMPTON

ABP has been granted planning permission to develop 400,000m2 of industrial,manufacturing and logistics land.

Outline planning consent has been given to Associated British Ports to expand the Port of Hull by 453 acres, including 212 acres within the Tax Assisted Zone. WORLD’S FIRST GREEN FUEL OFFSHORE VESSEL PLANNED Ørsted and ESVAGT are investing in a green fuel vessel for offshore wind operations The partnership agreement will see both firms investing in what they call the ‘world’s first’ service operation vessel (SOV) that can operate on green fuel. ”The agreement with ESVAGT checks many boxes for us, as it both helps decarbonise our offshore operations while also demonstrating our strong belief that green fuels based on renewable energy is the most viable solution to create a green maritime sector,” said Mark Porter, head of offshore operations at Ørsted.

The SOV will be powered by batteries and dual fuel engines, capable of sailing on Ørsted supplied renewable e-methanol, produced from wind energy and biogenic carbon. This will lead to a yearly emission reduction of around 4,500 tonnes of CO2 As a floating home, it also offers recreational activities for the on-board crew and technicians, including fitness facilities, a game room, a cinema and individual accommodation. The SOV is also equipped with a helipad for fast access and transfers from shore.

Battery powered The SOV will be powered by batteries and dual fuel engines, capable of sailing on Ørsted-supplied renewable e-methanol, produced from wind energy and biogenic carbon. This will lead to a yearly emission reduction of around 4,500 tonnes of CO2.

It is being designed for comfort and high workability, providing a highly efficient workspace and safe transfer of technicians at the windfarm via a motion-compensated gangway and transfer boats, as well as a crane to lift heavy spare parts.

The decision to invest in the new green fuel SOV supports Ørsted’s target of becoming carbon-neutral in its energy generation and own operations by 2025 and its sciencebased target of reaching net-zero emissions across the full value chain by 2040.

ESVAGT will start building the vessel in the second quarter of 2022. Once commissioned by the end of 2024, the SOV will start servicing the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Hornsea 2, off the UK’s east coast.

Over the past two years, Ørsted has built up a diverse portfolio of green fuel projects, three of which focus on producing e-methanol for maritime transport.

The portfolio includes a newly announced project on the US Gulf Coast, which will supply 300,000 tonnes of e-methanol for A.P. Moller – Maersk’s fleet of zero-emissions vessels, as well as the projects ‘Green Fuels for Denmark’ and FlagshipONE in Sweden. Both projects will be able to supply around 50,000 tonnes of e-methanol for shipping in 2024-2025.

First US contract awarded to Ampelmann Dutch firm Ampelmann is stepping into the US offshore wind market for the first time.

The offshore access provision firm has won a contract for the US offshore wind market to supply its E1000 motion-compensated platform to the towage and transport company Otto Candies.

The E1000 platform will be fitted to the Inspection, Maintenance and Repair vessel Paul Candies to provide safer and more reliable offshore access for crew hooking up and commissioning wind turbines in three commercial-scale wind farms in the northeast US Atlantic.

The ’Walk to Work’ (W2W) systems are custom made and designed so that the movement of people to and from ships and offshore structures is safe regardless of wave heights, weather conditions and vessel sizes.

They can also hoist equipment up to a tonne in weight, and Ampelmann says the fitting will mean that multiple turbines ca be seviced at once.

In March, Ampelmann’s A-type motioncompensated gangway was fitted to MMA Offshore’s MMA Privilege, a workboat currently supplying maintenance services to a wind farm at the Côte d’Ivoire.

PILE GRIPPER DELIVERY FOR OFFSHORE WIND FARM A new monopile gripper system has been delivered to a Taiwanese offshore wind farm

Installation support Osbit’s system will be used to support installation activities at the new windfarm. Once completed, the farm will produce 2.4 terawatt hours of renewable energy per year, supplying enough renewable electricity to meet the power needs of 605,000 households annually.

The system is enabling monopile installation from a moored floating vessel and is designed to handle some of the largest monopiles in the world. It is deployed and stowed using a deck rail skidding system and is used to maintain the position and verticality of the monopile foundations.

Osbit’s gripper design is highly adaptable for future projects, accommodating monopiles between 6.5 to 10 metres in diameter, with push forces up to 300 tonnes. The system has also been designed for rapid mobilisation and can be adapted to suit different vessel structures.

It’s also environmentally considerate, incorporating an integrated Near Pile Noise Mitigation system, which minimises the subsea noise and vibration associated with piling activities. This is complemented by bubble curtain rings which are deployed to dampen the energy emitted into the environment and further protect marine life.

Osbit, the UK-based offshore wind technology supplier, has successfully delivered a new monopile gripper system to Yunneng Wind Power Co. Ltd (Yunneng), which is building the Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm in Taiwan.

Our team has worked extremely hard to overcome a range of market and logistical challenges during this project, including a level of global supply chain pressure we have never experienced before and we are delighted with this successful outcome,” said Phil Pennington, Osbit’s project delivery director.

Work begins on France’s first offshore wind farm France has kicked off its first offshore wind farm with the installation of the first turbine.

Installation of the remaining 79 are scheduled to be in place by the autumn.

The turbines will be installed in sets of four, with each one needing around 24 hours to be completed.

Luxembourg-based civil engineer firm Jan de Nul has been contracted to carry out the installation, with its jack-up barge Vessel Vole loading the turbines in batches of four before transporting them to the SaintNazaire Wind Farm 12km off the east coast.

Each wind turbine will have a generating capacity of 6MW, so in total the farm can produce 480MW of power, which is 20% of the Loire-Atlantique’s

energy needs, Jan de Nul says. ”We are especially proud to support the country in its energy transition by paving the way for the delivery of the first electricity produced by the very first French offshore wind farm,” said Philippe Hutse, offshore director at Jan de Nul. After five weeks’ maintenance and preparatory work to the vessel at Belgium’s Ostend, the so-called Vole au Vent arrived at Sainte-Nazaire at the end of March, where she was loaded up with the first four turbines.

Installation was completed with the vessel’s 1,500-tonne main crane.

France has so far not installed offshore wind because its nuclear capacity provides the vast majority of the country’s electricity.

FLOATING WIND CONCEPT WINS DNV APPROVAL A concept born out of a project to better understand floating wind turbines has won approval Classification firm DNV has awarded Approval in Principle to Inocean, a Norwegian subsidiary of the engineering firm Technip Energies, for a semi-submersible wind turbine platform concept.

A result of the project WINDMOOR, a competence building project funded by the Research Council of Norway through the ENERGIX programme and industry partners Equinor, MacGregor, Inocean, APL Norway and RWE Renewables, the INO12TM has been designed to accommodate a 12MW wind turbine that can last for 25 years without dry docking.

The concept has been tailored towards mass production and scalability, and also offers the possibility of full assembly at the quayside with direct access to the tower.

The aim of the project was to improve the understanding of loads governing the mooring system design of floating wind turbines, and the scope involved validating low-frequency hydrodynamic models, understanding atmospheric stability and aerodynamic interaction between turbines.

The steel platform has three columns connected by pontoons and deck beams, and the turbione tower is installed at the top of one of the columns.

“The design was based on an iterative approach with multiple combinations of draft, column diameter/height, pontoon width/height, and columns center-center distance, subjected to constraints on hydrostatics, required ballast, heave/pitch natural periods, and static pitch at rated condition,” says research and development group SINTEF Ocean in its 80-page Definition of the INO WINDMOOR 12 MW base case floating wind turbine report.

The design has been assessed for operations in Bretagne Sud (South Brittany), based on the DNV class notation: OI Column-stabilised Floating offshore wind turbine installation POSMOOR in the DNV Rules for Offshore Units DNV-RUOU-0512, “Floating offshore wind turbine installations”. The review conducted covers the hull structure, stability, mooring, marine

systems, and technical safety. The AiP, which independently confirms that a design is feasible, was signed between Inocean and DNV at the recent Nor-Shipping trade show in Oslo.

DeepOcean buys subsea tech specialist The DeepOcean Group has acquired Installit to strengthen its offshore renewable offering.

DeepOcean acquired Installit from Oslo-listed Endúr ASA, which is a leading supplier of construction and maintenance project sand services for marine infrastructure.

“The acquisition of Installit demonstrates DeepOcean’s focus on supporting and enabling the energy transition. It accentuates DeepOcean’s engineering competence in key growth areas and increases our competence base within offshore renewables,” said Øyvind Mikaelsen, CEO of DeepOcean.

Installit, which was founded in 2000 by an experienced team of personnel from the

renewables industry, provides project management and engineering services within subsea cable installation and repair and marine operations for the marine and renewables industries. ”Installit’s expertise in high voltage cable installation and nearshore operations complements DeepOcean’s cable repair and renewables offerings. Together we will bring competitive solutions to the market,” said Mr Mikaelsen.

He said that going forward, Installit will be integrated into DeepOcean, operate under the DeepOcean brand and establish DeepOcean’s engineering hub in Oslo, Norway.

A deal has been signed for Cargotec’s UK subsidiary MacGregor to supply equipment for four PCTCs that will be the largest in the world

MacGregor, the UK subsidary belonging to Finnish firm Cargotec, will supply RoRo equipment for Aurora class Pure Car and Truck Carriers for Norwegian shipowner Höegh Autoliners.

Designed by Deltamarin, which is owned by the China Merchants Industries, the vessels in this class can carry up to 9,100 vehicles.

They have strengthened decks and internal ramp systems that will allow electric vehicles to be carried on all decks, with MacGregor’s Load Monitoring System boosting the load capacity of the ramp and providing more flexibility for heavier project cargo. The class will also have DNV’s ammonia and methanol ready notation.

The $15m order has been booked into Cargotec’s 2022 first quarter intake, with delivery of the first two vessels scheduled for the second half of 2024 and the next two the first half of 2025.

Dubai-based Shadowcat has unveiled a partnership with Triton Submarines that will build a Launch and Recovery Craft (LARC) that can carry a Triton 3300/3 MK!! submersible capable of diving to 1,000 metres for up to 12 hours.

Designed by naval architects Incat Crowther, the concept means three people can be seated on the Triton, which has been priced at less than $10 million and would take 14 months to deliver, ShadowCat says, ’using any of ShadowCat’s qualified builders in the US, Europe or the Middle East’.

OSV CONVERTED FROM OILFIELD WORK TO RENEWABLES

The British owned and operated MultiPurpose Installation and O&M vessel Inyanga Entsha is showning its versatility after undergoing DP trials and class surveys.

The vessel had been alongside for a refit at Harland and Wolff’s Appledore yard since November after a circuitous and eventful voyage from West Africa where it was bought

by Inyanga Maritime’s MD Richard Parkinson.

The 11-year-old 58m, 1500 tonne DP2 OSV had been disposed of by Bourbon Offshore. and as Bourbon Liberty 121, the ship had been laid up in Limbe, Cameroon, along with several others of that class, serving as the mother ship, providing power to the lay-up cluster.

Inyanga Entsha is powered by Cumminsengined DC Electric Propulsion, offering 35% increased energy efficiency leading to very low fuel consumption (3 cu m per day) and very high reliability. These engines have been completely rebuilt.

The Entsha is being reconfigured and adapted for the deployment of the first generation HydroWings, a unique system for constructing and installing tidal energy generators to be moored to the seabed, developed by Inyanga’s sister company HydroWing. The ship’s debut commission in

that role is scheduled for the winter 2022 at a site in Orkney.

Meanwhile, after extensive adaptations and removal of unnecessary systems, she has won two separate commissions. Leaving Falmouth on March 13 she is currently on charter, operating offshore Bilbao Spain.

She will then be on charter to Hughes

Subsea, where she will be fitted with an AUXROV Boulder removal tool and be engaged on UXO clearance on offshore wind farms.

The specialist equipment and modifications needed for the tidal generator work have included fitting a subsea crane, which is to be followed by the construction of a mezzanine deck and accommodation block for 16 pax, fitting an A-frame and an intelligent LARS (Launch and Recovery system). The LARS is operated from the bridge and allows subsea installation without ROV or personnel on deck, reducing risk to personnel and cost.

HydroWing is developing a system of large, commercially viable tidal energy arrays using its technology combined with Tocardo Turbines. This powerful combination combines the world’s most proven and reliable turbines in a multi-turbine subsea configuration, in a low weight, modular solution with costs that are significantly less than offshore wind.

The Inyanga Entsha will be used to install and maintain 100MW capacity per year.

SHIP & BOATBUILDING Manor Marine UK has won a contract for a second offshore wind farm service vessel with Mainprize Offshore, following on from its win of the build contract for the MO8 in 2021.

The second vessel to be built at the site in Portland, UK, the MO9, will be another 26-metre Supa-Swath catamaran designed by Walker Marine Design and due for delivery in early 2023.

“We are excited and extremely pleased to award Manor Marine the contract to build the MO9, which is our eleventh new build out of our 20 vessel operational plan,” said Bob Mainprize, managing director at Mainprize Offshore.

The build of the MO9 will mark the seventh crew transfer vessel built by Manor Marine.

Featuring Mainprize’s Supa-Swath hull form, the vessel will have a cargo capacity of 40 tonnes, seating for 24 passengers, 175m² of deck space and a maximum speed of 27 knots.

Leif Cooper, managing director at Manor Marine, said: “We have been working closely with the Mainprize team throughout the MO8 build and are very much looking forward to the continued relationship as we start construction on their eleventh vessel.”

Construction of the MO9 is due to start this month, alongside sister vessel the MO8 at Manor Marine.

VITTORIA TO BUILD PATROL BOATS FOR CROATIA

The Vittoria Shipyard has signed a contract to design and build two coastal patrol boat vessels for law enforcement in Croatia

The shipyard won the €6.5 million order which is co-financed by the EU as part of the Frontex external border management system. The boats are scheduled for delivery in 2023.

“This order projects us once again outside our national borders and strengthens our collaborative relationship with Croatia,” said Paolo Duò, president of the Vittoria Shipyard.

“A collaborative relationship that, on this occasion, will see us committed to supporting the local production system by ensuring the transfer of knowledge and technological expertise to local companies with the aim of enabling them to provide adequate and continuous technical assistance on site once the boats have been launched.”

The 21m by 6.5m vessels will be built solely from aluminium and equipped with a screw propeller and two 1,213-kilowatt MAN engines for a top speed of over 31 knots. The Croatian ship classification society, Hrvatski Registar Brodova, will perform checks and deal with certifications.

In 2004 and 2008 respectively, the Polesine Shipyard provided the Croatian Police with five river border patrol vessels and five unsinkable and self-righting search and rescue vessels, which are still in use. In 2017, the Vittoria Shipyard also equipped the Croatian Harbour Master Office with an unsinkable, self-righting search and rescue vessel in the district of Zadar.

SMI welcomes UK government support The Society of Maritime Industries has warmly welcomed the UK government’s ‘Refresh’ strategy to spend £4 billion on the industry.

The UK government has decided to spend £4 billion (€4.7 billion) on supporting the country’s shipbuilding industry and the investment will galvanise and support shipyards and suppliers across the UK, with new measures including better access to finance, vital skills building and funding for crucial research and development into greener vessels and infrastructure.

“Designed in partnership with the recently formed National Shipbuilding Office, the strategy ‘Refresh’ will also deliver a pipeline of more than 150 new naval and civil vessels

for the UK government and devolved administrations over the next 30 years.

“The vessels will include large warships, border force cutters, lighthouse vessels and the new National Flagship.”

SMI CEO Tom Chant said safeguarding the UK’s sovereign shipbuilding capability for complex naval vessels by strengthening the wider commercial maritime industry was an important step.

“The importance of this capability is underlined by tragic events in Ukraine, which demonstrate Britain requires the resilience to be able to defend itself as an island nation as well as support our allies around the globe.”

“Shipbuilding has been in our blood for centuries and I want to ensure it remains at the heart of British industry of generations to come.,” said UK prime minster Boris Johnson.

“The National Shipbuilding Strategy will transform this important and crucial industry, driving technology development and upskilling the shipbuilders of tomorrow. This will ensure the UK is rightly seen as a shipbuilding power across the world.”

Steerprop considers its cooperation with Alfons Håkans “went extremely well” with the former’s designers in frequent contact with personnel on board to ensure the new system fitted existing spaces and locations as well as fulfilling the wishes of the end user.

The control system was modified to the existing propulsion as well as a bridge control system with control levers, control panels and relevant touch screens. The manufacturer was also able to make modifications based on the customer’s wishes, for example bridge control panels were customised to fit existing cabinets, and where touch screen views, control panel buttons and indicators fit existing vessel functionalities and desired functions.

The capability for remote service diagnostics is also included, allowing Steerprop’s service department to diagnose faults and system status remotely. A further example of the tug’s futureproofing is where Steerprop says that should the owner want to replace the existing units with its own azimuth propulsors, the control system can be utilised with minimal changes.

Clearly, Artemis is set to continue in service potentially for many more years to come.

Upgrading and modernising tugs to maintain their cost effectiveness and allow the owner to extract maximum return on its investment is not uncommon in the towage world. Cosmetic changes often provide a modern external appearance, but the ageing process continues with the systems that are out of sight and must be similarly addressed.

Propulsion system manufacturer Steerprop has provided an insight into its operation to modernise Finnish tug operator Alfons Håkans’ ASD tug Artemis.

The fact that the 45tbp, 3,600bhp tug was around 40 years old clearly did not mean it was past its best, but as it was no longer possible to obtain spare parts for its original control system, for safety reasons Håkans decided to consider a “full scale upgrade”.

As Tuomas Raumanen, Håkans technical manager, says: “We noticed pretty quickly that it made sense to renew all parts related to control of the propulsion units including things like control levers, cables, computer units and feedback sensors.”

The need to carry out the upgrade was identified back in 2019 and as Steerprop was near the vessel owner’s headquarters, the advantage of ease of communication and rapid response aided by fast delivery and a reasonable price made Steerprop “an obvious choice.”

Keeping downtime to a minimum was obviously essential and Håkans’ own staff and subcontractors commenced the preliminary work, including installing new cables and manufacturing foundations for electrical cabinets while the tug was still in normal operation.

Meanwhile, Steerprop was building the entire control system at its own facilities.

The actual installation began with the dismantling of the old system and fitting of the new cabling. Next, electric cabinets related to the new system were installed, a process described as easy thanks to the preliminary work.

The most time-consuming part of the upgrade was connecting the new cables to different units but was nonetheless completed on schedule. After seven days, everything was completed and it was time to put the new system to the test. Sea trials were carried out, including adjustment of the final parameters, which was easily achieved as it had been considered when planning the software.

The start of the installation to final approval by the customer took nine days in total.

“After sea trials and final adjustments our masters and chief engineers were satisfied and also surprised at how well whole process went. Of course, it takes a while before masters and others get used to a new type of control levers, but that’s common when changes are made to older vessels,” said Raumanen.

The biggest advantage in comparison to the old system is said to be where all adjustments can be made very easily, the new system is far more reliable. The information the system provides about the status of the propulsion units is also much easier to understand and Håkans estimates that the upgrade has added 10 to 15 years to the lifecycle of Artemis.

8 Adequate returns are essential to fund the asset-intensive salvage industry

in casualties often reveals mis-declared or undeclared dangerous goods within boxes otherwise thought to contain benign goods.

During 2021 the grounding of the container ship Ever Given in the Suez Canal was without doubt the highest profile such incident for many years, affecting trade and commerce on an unprecedented global scale and attracting worldwide attention.

While not included in 2021 statistics, at the time of writing ISU member salvors freed another container ship, the Ever Forward, which had grounded in Chesapeake Bay in the US. Commenting on the container element of the annual survey, ISU president Captain Nicholas Sloane said: “The most eyecatching number in these results is for containers. ISU members provided services to vessels carrying more than 100,000 TEU amounting to more than 1.5 million tonnes of cargo. The mixed nature of such cargoes - including dangerous goods, harmful chemicals, plastic pellets - means that they are potentially highly polluting and difficult and dangerous to deal with.”

The final part of the survey report reinforces the industry’s importance, saying that in the period 1994 to end-2021 ISU members have provided services to casualty vessels carrying 38,872,986 tonnes of potential pollutants, an average of 1.4 million tonnes per year.

ISU members provided 226 services to vessels carrying 2.6 million tonnes of potentially polluting cargo and fuel in 2021, reinforcing once again the value from commerce to the public in general of the professional salvage industry in mitigating financial losses and protecting property, not to mention and arguably more importantly protecting the environment.

It is figures relating to salvage services involving containers that stand out among various categories of cargoes. Twenty foot equivalent units (TEU) are the industry standard for measuring containers that actually come in a variety of lengths. The weight of each container can vary depending on the contents and for the survey a figure of 15 tonnes per TEU is used. The year in question saw a more than three-fold increase in both tonnes equivalent and actual number of containers involving 1,559,025 tonnes in total in 2021 compared to 502,845 in 2020 and 103,935 TEU compared to 33,523 in 2020.

Looking at other potential pollutants, crude oil cargo was “relatively low” in 2021 at 103,408 tonnes compared to 360,733 tonnes in 2020, while cargoes of refined products rose from 112,096 tonnes in 2020 to 182,232 tonnes in 2021.

Chemical cargoes fell significantly to 24,126 tonnes in 2021 from 133,150 tonnes in 2020.

Another decrease was recorded with bulk cargoes, down to 424,719 tonnes in 2021 from a figure of 744,246 tonnes in 2020. The bulk cargo category includes products such as coal, scrap steel, grains, soya and cement, but some bulk cargoes are not included as potential pollutants and ISU members also provided services to bulkers carrying 209,475 tonnes of non-hazardous dry bulk – mainly metal ores.

Removing potential pollutants from ships is often a priority as well as attending to the physical needs of the vessel itself, and while on occasion ships may not be carrying any cargo at all, they will be carrying bunker fuels, in themselves potential pollutants.

Indeed, the largest container ships carry quantities of bunkers that would be considered a significant risk as a cargo within smaller tankers: the recovery of bunker fuels must therefore be considered an important part of the salvor’s role in pollution prevention.

Bunker fuel total for 2021 was 89,456 tonnes, down slightly from 111,886 tonnes in 2020. ISU notes that 11 cases had more than 2,000 tonnes of bunkers on board and that an increased number of the services noted in the survey did not record the quantity of bunkers or the cargo type. Bulk nonpolluting cargoes recovered in 2021 was 209,457 tonnes compared to 521,326 tonnes in 2020.

The 226 services in 2021 included 30 wreck removal/ marine services contracts; 26 Lloyd’s Open Forms; 52 towage contracts; 15 Japanese Forms; 24 Turkish Forms, eight fixed price and lump sum contracts; 27 day rate contracts and 44 other contracts.

TUGS & TOWING Propulsion manufacturer Schottel has signed a second framework agreement with Sanmar to be the exclusive supplier of thrusters for the Turkish shipbuilder’s Sirapinar class tug.

Collaboration between the two companies dates to 2004, since when the “partnership and successful cooperation” has led to around 20 joint projects based on the Sirapinar ASD tug, mostly for European owners including SMS Towage of Hull and Portland Port in the UK. The basic Sirapinar design is flexible in its nature and in its aim to “guarantee the equally high-level propulsion technology for any desired performance” and examples of the class will be equipped exclusively with Schottel RudderPropellers type SRP 340, SRP 360 FP or SRP 430 FP, offering bollard pulls of 40 to around 60 tonnes.

While Schottel is based in Germany, its activities are not confined to Europe and it has been selected to supply RudderPropeller thrusters for a tug under construction at Cheoy Lee Shipyards in Hong Kong for PSA Marine Peru, a wholly owned subsidiary of PSA Marine (Pte) Ltd. The installation will feature Schottel’s Sydrive M technology, reducing emissions from the vessel. Sydrive M connects the port and starboard azimuth thrusters, allowing them to be driven by only one of the

main engines which leads to reduced operating hours and lower maintenance costs along with reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions. This arrangement would

typically be used when the tug is running light, for example to and from the ship being assisted before engaging the second engine for actual towing activities. The system needs no additional electronic components, with three main operational modes: light operation or free sailing, full thrust operation and firefighting mode.

The vessel in question is a Robert Allan Ltd-designed RAmparts 2400W marque and type SRP 460 thrusters (2,240kW each) featuring fixed-pitch propellers of 2.6m diameter, chosen for the tug. The 24.4m long, 11.25m wide vessel will achieve 70tbp and is scheduled to enter service in 2023.

TUG DELIVERY AND ORDER ROUND-UP A delivery that warrants a more in-depth examination concerns Turkish shipbuilder Med Marine’s completion of a powerful and significant tug for Kenya Port Authority. More than a very able shiphandling tug, however, Mwokozi II has a notable salvage capability and is designed to operate in East Africa and the Indian Ocean regions, undertaking international salvage and towage operations involving very large vessels and ordered on the back of the establishment of the IMO Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Centre within Mombasa Port.

Mwokozi II is a custom-designed 42m long, 16m beam tug based on Robert Allan Ltd’s RAstar 4200 design. The RINA classed tug has a bollard pull of 126t via Caterpillar C280-12 main engines, each rated at 3,700kW and powering Schottel SRP 710 FP Z-drives, Schottel also supplying a tunnel thruster forward. Caterpillar also provides two identical C9.3 gensets, each with a power output of 200ekW. As well as the standard specification for a tug of this class Mwokozi II is equipped with powerful MacGregor winches forward and aft, the latter containing 1,000m of 64mm diameter wire rope while the forward winch features a length and tension monitoring system. MacGregor also supplied a combined hydraulic shark jaws and towing pin package, while Fire Fighting Systems provided a fifi1 off-ship firefighting system.

MLC compliant accommodation reflects what can be extended periods of operation for tugs with salvage capabilities, single and double cabins provided for up to 18 persons.

Known for its fleet of crew transfer vessels, Damen says the addition of its Multi Cat workboat, a 2309 variant for UK-based HST Marinne, is the “first stage of HST’s strategy to become a total solutions provider to the offshore renewables sector” Last month MJ reported on progress with Sanmar’s four vessel order for Port Qasim Authority, Pakistan. All four Kocaçay class tugs, Gharo, Malir, Korangi and Pipri, have now been delivered, just one year after the order was placed.

The final delivery to report has seen Damen Shipyards complete a new class of its Multi Cat workboat, a 2309 variant for UK-based HST Marine. Known for its fleet of crew transfer vessels, Damen says the addition is the “first stage of HST’s strategy to become a total solutions provider to the offshore renewables sector”. Upgrades for HST Hazel are extensive, including Volvo Penta engines for “added efficiency and emissions reduction” and potential conversion to IMO Tier III standard. Orders Moving on to orders and staying with Damen, an order for another Multi Cat 2309 workboat has been secured from Atlantic Towage & Marine and part of the Ireland-based marine services company’s expansion plans beyond Ireland/ UK into mainland Europe with a special focus on the offshore renewables sector. An upgraded AKC 185 HE4 deck crane from HS Marine has been specified forward with an AK34 HE4 model from the same supplier installed aft while Kongsberg will provide a DP1 system. The Tier II compliant vessel will include provision for retrofitting of Damen Marine’s NOx reduction system using SCR technology and providing Tier III compliance. The hull and superstructure are to be built at Damen Shipyards Koźle with final outfitting carried out in the Netherlands.

The global reach of European shipyards that specialise in tugs and workboats is demonstrated with Sanmar Shipyards securing an order for the latest updated version of its popular RAmparts 2400SX tug for family-owned Mackenzie Marine and Towage Pty Ltd, based in Esperance, Western Australia.

It will be powered by Caterpillar 3516C Tier III compliant main engines developing 4,200kW in total at 1,600rpm driving US255 FP thrusters and delivering livering 70tbp, the tug also having firefighting capabilities. es. TOWLINES 8 Fairplay Towage has sold one of its powerful anchor-handling tugs to new owners in Cyprus.

Fairplay-33 has been part of Fairplay Towage’s fleet since 2011 and a regular sight in European waters. It is now off to new owners, joining the fleet of Cyprus-based EDT Offshore Egypt SAE, reportedly to operate in the Mediterranean. One of two similar anchor-handling tugs from the ways of Mangalia Shipyard Romania, the 48.8m long, 8,158hp, 100tbp tug has previously been active in the offshore oil and gas industry and salvage sector. It sister ship Fairplay-32 is currently part of the Boluda fleet family operating as VB Hispania.

8 Spanish marine equipment supplier Fluidmecanica has reported that a Russian icebreaker-class rescue tug equipped with its escort towing system has successfully completed an “inter-navigation repair” and classification survey.

Nevskaya Zastava is an interesting tug with a lowerable wheelhouse allowing passage beneath bridges to suit the city of St Petersburg. Its icebreaking activities prevent flooding of the coastal area from ice accumulations that lead to a decrease in

channel capacity. Fluidmecanica says its Russian River Vessel-approved towing systems continue working without incident.

8 A future tug delivery that will be followed with interest has progressed with the keel-laying ceremony of the latest rescue tug for Spain’s Salvamento Maritimo.

The ceremony took place at shipbuilder Astilleros Zamakona in Spain with the currently unnamed €52.5 million, DP2 vessel due for delivery in October 2023. It will provide an impressive 200tbp via diesel-electric propulsion on a hull length of 82.3m and accommodate 16 crew and 26 special operations members. A particular feature will be a flight deck and hangar for drones up to 9m.

TYRA II NEARS COMPLETION AFTER 10 YEARS A project to reconstruct Denmark’s largest offshore gas and oil operation is reaching its final stages after almost 10 years’ intense engineering work The seventh of eight platforms has been installed at Denmark’s Tyra II gas field after the initial Tyra plant was temporarily closed in 2019.

Since 2013, operators TotalEnergies and the Danish Underground Consortium have been working to decommission Tyra, which due to natural subsidence in the chalk reservoir below had sunk by about five metres.

When the project is completed in 2023, 95% of the eight platforms and all associated materials, cables, pipelines and so on will have been recycled and used to build the new Tyra II. The seventh platform, a seven-storey, 35m high structure weighing 5,400 tonnes, is the residential quarters of the crew, consisting of walls, rooms, furniture, hospital, fitness area, control rooms and a helideck on top.

It was towed from Italy, where it was built, on Heerema Marine Contractors’ 122m Barge H-408, arriving at the site around 10 days ago after a 5.800km voyage.

On arrival on April 12, Heerema’s crane vessel Sleipnir, said by field operator TotalEnergies to be the largest in the world, was used to hoist the platform 30 metres in the air until crane operators could place the platform accurately on its legs.

Just one platform, the processing platform, remains to be installed. It is currently being built in Indonesia, Total says, and is the heaviest of the eight platforms at almost 17,000 tonnes and 47 metres in height.

95% recycled materials “Among other things, a big focus has been put on recycling and reusing more than 95% of the old Tyra,” says Total. “As such, local companies disassembled old parts, renovated them, installed new technology and reassembled it, giving them a new life on Tyra II.” The project has been run by a partnership of TotalEnergies (43.3%) and the Danish Underground Consortium, which consists of Noreco (36.8%) and Nordsøfonden (20%).

Tyra is Denmark’s largest natural gas field, producing 90% of Denmark’s gas until it was closed, when gas then had to be imported. It also has oil reserves of 60,000 barrels per day.

“With a total weight of over 35,000 tonnes and up to 54 metres in height, Tyra II will become a small high-rise town on pillars in the North Sea225 km from the west coast of Jutland,” says TotalEnergies. “There are great forces of nature at stake here, and every detail of the crew’s safety has been thought of.

“Between 2021 and 2023, our hook-up and commissioning crew will have spent more than 1.3 million man hours in the Tyra field, connecting cables and pipes, testing equipment, integrating reservoirs, wells, compressors and pumps, and reconnecting Tyra II with the Danish gas supply and distribution network onshore,” says Total.

testing, flange management and commissioning services on the wellhead and riser platforms, which were built at the Sembcorp Marine yard in Singapore.

The last platform, the processing module, is currently being built at McDermott yard in

Indonesia, where IKM Testing Asia is doing the testing. The testing contract includes topside helium leak testing and commissioning during the hook-up of the platforms, as well as dewatering and preservation of subsea pipelines between the platforms.

MASSIVE CONCRETE SILL PREPARED TO SET SAIL The vital component of a storm surge barrier for one of Belgium’s ports is about to set sail A storm surge barrier being built to protect 67 km of the Belgian coast that are at risk from flooding during heavy weather events has reached a major milestone, say the firms working on the seven-year project.

Marine civil engineer Jan de Nul is building the barrier and will immerse a major component, a concrete threshold, or sill, at Nieuwpoort as a major component that has been worked on in cooperation with marine construction specialist Herbosch-Kiere.

Last week, the companies announced that the building of the 23.5m x 42.1m concrete sill had been finished at HerboschKiere’s Kallo facility and was about to be transported by sea to Nieuwpoort, where it will be installed in the harbour channel between both abutments of the storm barrier.

‘Special transport’ “Getting the threshold from Kallo to Nieuwpoort can definitely be qualified as special transport,” says Jan de Nul. The threshold first must be built onto a pontoon that can be submerged then pulled by two tugboats along the Scheldt River, before sailing over the sea to Ostend, which will take around 12 hours.

“For the transport over the Western Scheldt and over sea, several links in the nautical chain work together closely,” says Herbosch-Kiere.

“The Common Nautical Authority gives approval for the river leg, and the Maritime Rescue and Coordination Centre issues the permit for the sea leg. For both parts of the ship, a pilot will be on board.

“Permits have been issued for this special transport, stipulating certain safety conditions.”

When the threshold arrives in Ostend, all of the seafastening safeguards that were preventing it from shifting or tipping over will have to be removed.

It will then be hooked on to a second pontoon, the Matador III. “The concrete sill weighs more than 4,500 tonnes,” says Herbosch-Kiere. “Too heavy to lift for the Matador III. Bearing in mind Archimedes’ Law, that submerged objects are lighter to lift, the pontoon will be submerged so that the sill is entirely covered by water. The load to be lifted then ‘only’ weighs 1,210 tonnes.”

This operation will take up to 20 hours, and only when full checks have been completed will the threshold, suspended

from the crane on the Matador III, be ready for the last sixhour leg to Nieuwpoort.

Final steps When the threshold arrives in Nieuwpoort, it will be lowered between the two abutments, which take around a day. It will then need to be anchored, and the entire harbour will be closed for around 10 days.

Divers will monitor the positioning throughout.

In the autumn, construction work will begin on bypass drains, lateral pipes in each of the abutments.

“They will ensure that the spring tide flow rate never exceeds three knots,” says Jan de Nul. “Then the steel barrier still needs to be installed, as well as the mechanical parts and the fenders, and the service building will be installed on the abutment on the right bank.”

The firms say the works should be completed in 2025.

The works at Nieuwpoort are part of the coastal protection of the entire Flemish coast. In February, Jan de Nul began dredging and beach replenishment by the port of Ostend, moving 600,000m3 of sand to a 1.5km stretch between the western harbour dam and beach.

MARINE CIVILS Land & Water is due to begin the second phase of a major lake restoration project on the Blenhein Estate.

The first dredge in 100 years of the Queen Pool lake on the royal Blenheim Estate in Oxfordshire, England will be carried out by Land & Water, the UK marine civils contractor.

The work, which will take around nine months, will remove 300,000 m3 of silt enough to fill the England football team’s national stadium, Wembley, to the brim - from the lake at Blenheim Palace, where Winston Churchill was born. It is now home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough.

“The dredge is one of the most ambitious civil engineering projects undertaken here at Blenheim over the last 300 years,” said Roy Cox, Blenheim Estate’s director. ”It is vitally important to help ensure the long-term health of the lakes, surrounding waterways and parkland and the rich biodiversity that it supports as well as mitigating the risk of environmental damage.”

This is the second phase of a major restoration project by Land & Water at Blenheim Estate, where in summer 2020, essential works were carried out to the Grand Cascade Apron, which feeds the lakes from the River Glyme.

2nd PHASE OF WATER WORKS STARTS AT CHURCHILL’S BIRTHPLACE

Land & Water created a resin injection curtain wall in the largest such work to be done in the UK. A new concrete apron and stone-faced walls were built to minimise further wash over the length and breadth of the walls, ensuring the safety of the lake, which was designed by the famous landscape architect Lancelot Brown - better known as Capability Brown - in around 1763.

in Wiltshire, which is home to a colony of sea lions and a hippopotamus.

Part of a £2million project, 550 metres of engineering is needed to strengthen a dam to ensure it can withhold 110,480 tonnes of water.

PRYSMIAN GROUP CONFIRMS €1 BILLION PORTFOLIO Prysmian has confirmed plans to spend €1 billion on cable-laying projects by 2024 Italian subsea cable systems firm Prysmian Group has confirmed plans to invest up to €1 billion by 2024 in cablelaying projects around the world.

The company says it already has a 35-40% share in the high voltage submarine and underground cable market, which is set to grow to more than €8 billion a year in terms of projects awarded by 2025.

“In 2021 Prysmian acquired projects worth €4.8 billion,” the company says. “In early 2022, the group was awarded the contract to build Neu Connect, the first power interconnection between Great Britain and Germany, a milestone project within the construction of the pan-European power grid.”

At the end of March, Prysmian was awarded a contract to supply, install and test a 214-mile submarine fibre optic cable in south-east Alaska, linking the Alaskan capital of Juneau with Prince of Wales Island to provide high-speed broadband to residents there for the first time.

Also in March, the company completed the world’s longest submarine electricity connector between the UK and Norway.

“As we showed just a few days ago, with the early completion of the NSL interconnector between the UK and Norway, the world’s longest, we can assure unique levels of reliability and precision in executing projects in our sector,” said Hakan Ozmen, EVP Project Business Prysmian Group.

Prysmian owns and operates the world’s largest and most advanced cable-laying vessel, the Leonardo da Vinci, which it calls a ‘technological gem’.

Built by Vard Group (Fincantieri) and launched in December

2021, the vessel will be instrumental in expediting the time needed to complete submarine interconnection projects, while also decreasing their environmental impact, Prysmian says.

“The group’s fleet of cable-laying vessels also includes the Giulio Verne, the Cable Enterprise and the Ulisse, in addition to the new barge Barbarossa,” says the firm. ”Moreover, in addition to the Arco Felice (Naples) base, it can also count on the Middlesbrough operating base in Great Britain.”

Prysmian says production capacity will be expanded along with technological equipment upgrades in the firm’s plants in Italy, Finland, France and Germany.

Prysmian says its 525 kV P-Laser cable system has unparalleled efficiency in energy transmission with an aramidarmoured cable for submarine depths of up to 3,000 metres.

Bolina booms supplied to Cahora Bassa Dam UK boom technology firm Bolina has completed a project on southern Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam.

UK boom manufacturer Bolina is to provide debris booms for the largest hydroelectric dam in southern Africa, in Mozambique.

The hydropower plant is operated by Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa, and is the source of most of the energy for Mozambique’s grid.

The 170m high Cahora Bassa Dam holds water back up to 280km upstream, and rainfall and other weather events mean it can experience severe fluctuations, which affects operations.

Before Bolina carried out the work, waterborne debris was overwhelming the existing boom, which needed to be replaced.

“Bolina debris booms are able to prevent materials such as plastic, invasive plant life or wood from accumulating and blocking the dam, as well as preventing damage to

the dam itself,” says Bolina. ”Damage can occur as a result of heavy floating objects being carried at speed on the surface of the lake, impacting the dam’s structure and consquently weakening it. ”Furthermore, obstructions to the dam’s sluice gate due to debris accumulation will reduce its capacity ti channel water, in turn reducing the dam’s efficiency, which will eventually necessitate cleaning and removal

of obstructions and cause disruption to the dam;s supply and operation - further increasing maintenance costs.”

To solve the problem, Bolina’s LSB600 Log Screen Booms, tested at more than 60 tonnes, were installed complete with a subsurface mesh joined together to provide a barrier for logs and debris with full articulation between the units.

A tubular backbone and lug connections strengthen the boom without stresing the floats, which can be demounted.

In total, 380 metres of booms were shipped from the UK to the dam, complete with the largest gate assembly Bolina has designed, allowing the passage of maintenance boats either side of the boom.

Bolina was bought by the coastal and waterways protection company Ecocoast in 2020. Its product portfolio includes silt curtains, oil booms and geosynthetic containers as well as different kinds of booms for pollution control.

MARINE CIVILS A Floating to Floating system could cut the cost of wind farm installation, says marine civil engineering specialist Heerema.

Offshore installation and decommissioning firm Heerema says it has developed an alternative method of installing wind turbines that does not need a wet-tow and removes the need for marshalling yards.

The ‘Floating to Floating’ installation method uses floaters that can be built on land before being dry-towed on a transport vessel to the site, the company says.

On arrival, the floaters are installed using Heerema’s floating installation frame to lift them off the vessel.

“Heerema’s floating installation frame will submerge the floaters down by weight, removing the need for high-tech ballasting or tensioning systems and reducing installation duration,” the company says.

“The bottom foundation work can be executed in parallel by optimising the capabilities of Heerema’s semi-submersible crane vessels.”

The cost of offshore wind development could ultimately prevent commercial upscaling, Heerema says, which is why it has come up with the floating solution.

FASTER OPERATIONS CAN BE KINDER ON CREWS Seawork exhibitor Hefring Marine is using intelligent systems to digitize seamanship for small, fast commercial vessels, writes Jake Frith Led by navies, coastguards, search & rescue organisations and law enforcement agencies, some of the biggest drivers in fast boat design and operations for the last decade have been crew health, safety and welfare.

Icelandic company and first time Seawork exhibitor Hefring Marine specializes in the development of digital guidance and monitoring solutions to augment the vessel operating experience, and is bringing its complete ‘guidance system’ product (also called Hefring Marine) to market after several years of development.

As well as reducing injuries, Hefring believes the system has other significant cost drivers, such as improving fuel consumption, reducing repair bills and potentially lowering insurance premiums.

Admin console The product, which has been developed in collaboration with a number of auspicious names in high speed operations including Viking Norsafe and KNRM (Dutch sea rescue service), uses control and sensor units that both record and provide real-time data to the boat’s MFD (Multifunction Display), crunching data such as wave impact G-forces, number of impacts and trim setting.

Hefring has demonstrated in a recent trial that boat drivers dramatically modified their driving style when the system was turned on, making it much less damaging to a potential crew The system is compatible with Garmin, Simrad and Raymarine MFDs and helps to ensure that boats are operated in a safe and efficient operational envelope. The onboard system is supported by a cloud-based fleet management Admin Console for realtime monitoring and collection of detailed historical trip logs.

Motions, speed, location, and other analysis and data can be reviewed on a second-by-second basis.

All data is recorded to and presented in a fleet management desktop portal that provides insightful analysis into each trip.

On board the vessel, it shows the boat’s actual SOG (Speed over the ground) in the same ‘dial’ as the calculated ROG (RedSpeed over the ground).

The latter is effectively the maximum ‘safe’ speed at which the vessel’s accelerations will not cause short-term injury or long-term damage to passengers or crew.

The system automatically varies its guidance to reflect prevailing conditions, actual speed and vessel motions.

Impacts reduced With all data being both recorded and available real-time to vessel operators, the technology has a marked psychological effect.

Hefring has demonstrated in a recent trial that boat drivers dramatically modified their driving style when the system was turned on, making it much less damaging to a potential crew. Hefring’s claims are that vessel fuel efficiency can be improved by 30% and crew impacts can be reduced by 70%.

In one case study Hefring ran, a 213 nautical mile open sea RIB passage between Norway and Denmark, 90% of impacts of over 3.0g would have been flagged up by the system and been immediately flagged up as ROG exceeding SOG. In this study, the RIB driver was not given real-time access to the system so that the real-world behaviors that the system seeks to address could be monitored. This driver, in fact, spent 66% of the 10-hour trip with the boat’s actual SOG exceeding ROG. The Hefring system recorded one impact of 6.1g off the North Coast of Denmark - a figure that the US Navy would have considered risky enough to be deemed as acceptable only for a ‘vessel under fire’.

Fine on this occasion as a one off, and the crew all recovered, although were described as ‘highly fatigued’ after the trip. If repeated a number of times over multiple trips, accelerations like this could have severe chronic effects on a crew and increase their risk of acute injury.

Training aid Less common than fast boat drivers going too fast for the prevailing conditions is a driver going the other way, being overly concerned about crew welfare and going slower than is ideal for the operation.

This is where the Hefring system also shows its worth for military or SAR operators, because in the case of a more cautious driver, the system will encourage them to speed up a little, thus potentially getting clear of danger or arriving at a casualty faster.

Hefring also considers the system a useful aid to driver training. It captures data on such variables as the boat’s trim setting, so a novice or inattentive operator burning excess fuel with an inappropriate trim tab or engine trim setting would be quickly flagged up.

PROPULSION MONITORING TO SAVE TIME AND MONEY Inland-headquartered azimuth propulsion systems manufacturer Steerprop is providing propulsion monitoring driven by machine learning for three platform supply vessels The five-year contract signed with Siem Offshore provides Steerprop’s propulsion monitoring service ‘Steerprop Care Premium’ to the three 5.500 DWT platform supply vessels Siem Pride, Siem Symphony, and Siem Thiima, which are operating in Norwegian and Australian waters.

The service is designed to enhance the availability of a vessel by continuously monitoring the health of its main propulsion systems, revealing any changes that could indicate upcoming maintenance needs.

Jarkko Sirrola, PDM Manager at Steerprop, said: “Machine learning guides our experts in predictive maintenance to focus on the right measurements at the right time, revealing consequential changes in the behavior of the propulsion system. With these insights, our team can work more efficiently, and we are able to provide information on equipment condition so well in advance that our customer can plan the upcoming maintenance as efficiently as possible.”

Sirrola claims that this new level of predictive maintenance will ultimately lead to an enhanced availability of vessels, increased safety and optimised maintenance based on the real requirements of the propulsion system. he says.

Steerprop also believes that this element of automation will allow operators to lengthen overhaul intervals, optimise spare part consumption and avoid unplanned maintenance.

Aaron Barbetti, Maritime Manager at Siem Offshore in Australia, said: “We became interested in Steerprop Care Premium because it gives comfort in the operation of the vessels and streamlines the maintenance process onboard, The experience so far matches our expectations, and we hope to see long-term dividends together with Steerprop.”

The basic version of Steerprop Care is named Standalone, and it gives the onboard crew basic information about the propulsion system condition. It is included in every propulsion

unit delivery since 2019. The online versions Steerprop Care Plus and Premium offer more advanced measurement capabilities, and if any development occurs that might cause future disturbances on a ship, Steerprop’s predictive maintenance team will notify the crew and provide remote assistance if necessary. Steerprop Care Plus and Premium are also available as a retrofit installation.

DETECTING MARINE MAMMALS WITH THERMAL IMAGING For ‘always on’ tasks such as marine mammal monitoring in offshore windfarms, automation could be one way of easing a significant burden, writes Jake Frith UK thermal camera manufacturer Seiche Ltd is collaborating with Belgian marine construction and dredging major Jan De Nul Group to start a two-month pilot project to test the A.I capacity and visual reach of Seiche’s new second-generation HD thermal cameras on board the Adhémar de Saint-Venant.

Jan De Nul Group believes that methods used for the detection and protection of marine mammals in the dredging and offshore construction business on projects worldwide are ripe for a major rethink.

Inge Van Tomme, Director of the KPI Department at Jan De Nul Group, said: “The idea of automated mammal detection originated from an internal JDN Innovation Challenge. We chose this competition entry as the outright winner, out of many other viable ideas.We are convinced that we can re-invent the way of detecting and protecting marine mammals for the whole dredging and offshore construction business on projects worldwide.”

The project was initiated by four employees of Jan De Nul as part of their internal innovation challenge, and proposed using this innovative technology during marine offshore operations.

A team from Jan De Nul and Seiche travelled to Rotterdam to install the detection system on board.

The combined visual and thermal cameras, secured to high points on the vessel for an increased visual reach, will be fully tested over the coming two months.

Nicola Harris, Associate Director of Environmental Services at Seiche Ltd, said: “It is really great to see construction

companies like Jan De Nul showing an active interest in developing such key tools for protecting the environment.” The trial will allow Seiche to collect the necessary data for testing and finetuning the A.I. capacity of the automated detection function and the visual distances these cameras can cover.

This is a first step towards the fully automated detection of marine mammals, setting a new standard to increase the level of protection of marine mammals and to reduce safety risks, costs and impact on the environment.

DOF SUBSEA RECYCLES 99% OF DECOMMISSIONED OIL RIG DOF Subsea claims nearly all of the materials making up the Buchan and Hannay oil field projects were recycled or repurposed DOF Subsea says it has decommissioned both the Buchan and Hannay oil and gas field projects off the north coast of Scotland and achieved a 99% recycling and repurposing rate for all materials.

Operated by the Spanish/Chinese joint venture Repsol Sinopec, the offshore works were decommissioned in 74 days, says the company, which provided the engineering, preparation, removal and disposal (EPRD) services using its Skandi Skansen and Skandi Acergy vessels.

“The works saw the recovery of 135 concrete mattresses weighing approximately 800 tonnes, more than 12km of rigid pipelines, SSIV/PLEM structures, 15.5km of flexibles and umbilicals, spoolpieces, and around 1,500 grout bags and general debris,” DOF Subsea says.

“The material was shipped to Aberdeen Harbour’s Clipper Quay for dispersal, with 95% of the material being recycled and 4% being repurposed. Only 1% was sent to landfill as a last resort.”

Fifteen concrete mattresses were repurposed into aggregate for use in roads at the harbour, plastic sheaths from flexible risers and umbilicals were recycled by an approved supplier, and all metal was smelted.

“We are delighted with this outcome as part of one of our biggest subsea decommissioning projects in the North Sea to date,” said Luis Batalla, head of Decommissioning at Repsol Sinopec.

Repsol Sinopec has also announced that the Golden Eagle, Piper and Claymore field owners have executed new agreements reaffirming their commitment to export produced oil to the Orkney Islands’ Flotta Terminal until end of field life in the 2030s.

”This commitment to support the longevity of the terminal underpins a variety of growth opportunities in the wider area, including renewed drilling and several third party tie-backs.

All field owners have recently completed successful drilling programmes to increase production volumes and are actively engaged with a number of third parties that are considering the use of the offshore facilities,” the JV said.

Subsea monitoring project first A subsea monitoring project has been completed using high-speed through-water wireless optical modems.

This is the first time that international subsea equipment rental and solutions company Ashtead Technology has used Hydromea’s LUMA high-speed throughwater wireless optical modems since signing a global rental partnership last year.

“When completing subsea installation projects, it is vital that the information provided is accurate, reliable and delivered in real-time. This reduces the risk of damage to the structure during installation and ensures it is installed within specification,” said Ross MacLeod, technical director, Ashtead Technology.

“We have been using LUMA modems on construction projects over the past three

years and we have been very pleased with the functionality and ease of integration of the devices into our existing systems. The technology used within the LUMA modems is cutting edge and advances subsea data communication significantly whilst helping to reduce project complexity, risk and cost,” added Mr MacLeod.

This latest project saw Ashtead Technology provide its Autonomous Structure Monitoring Systems, which were each integrated with LUMA optical modems, to complete an underwater installation monitoring work scope for subsea and offshore wind contractor, Havfram, in the Norwegian North Sea. Work scope included the provision of ten Autonomous Structure Monitoring Systems, two for each suction anchor template and an

additional four Autonomous Structure Monitoring Systems, which were used to monitor the installation of a range of subsea structures. The Structure Monitoring Systems were configured for autonomous independent operation, communicating data to one of the installation ROVs. Ashtead Technology utilised LUMA optical modems to enhance the accuracy of the data collected, ensuring maximum performance of the system.

LUMA products are small, light, low power consuming subsea optical modems that provide high-speed and high-bandwidth wireless communication at depths of up to 6,000 metres with low latency, even in the murky waters of the North Sea. Ashtead Technology has rolled out the use of LUMA technology in all of its offshore energy global construction and O&M projects.

WORLD’S LARGEST INFLATABLE LIFEBOAT LAUNCHES The world’s largest inflatable lifeboat launches to the cruise industry Seahaven, built by lifecraft and safety equipment company Survitec, has completed the International Maritime Organisation’s A.250 physical tests as required by Lloyd’s Register, and will officially launch to the cruise industry today.

The craft, with a capacity of 1.060, can be launched with the push of a button, without needing davits, and automatically inflates, taking just four minutes to deploy.

Once deployed, it can travel independently for 24 hours at a speed of six knots.

One of the Lloyd’s Register tests required a timed evacuation from a sinking ship that had to be carried out in under 30 minutes under International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) rules. It was achieved in 22 minutes, Survitec says.

The craft, with a capacity of 1.060, can be launched with the push of a button, without needing davits, and automatically inflates, taking just four minutes to deploy. more importantly safer than current evacuation arrangements,” said Claude Sada, Managing Director Survitec Survival Craft.

For shipowners, one of the key benefits is that the boat’s design means deck space is increased by 85% and the lifeboat does not have to be placed in conventional locations on the port and starboard waists of a ship.

It means there is more flexibility for designers to add cabins and other amenities. Multiple slides make access easier for mobility-impaired passengers and enable evacuation of family groups. The self-propelled evacuation system is accessed by high-pressure inflatable slides and can be stowed in a rigid pod alongside the ship. It is also the largest-capacity evacuation system currently available, with each of its two units able to carry 530 people. Once launched, it can travel independently at six knots for 24 hours. ”Seahaven provides the opportunity for cruise-ship owners to reimagine the passenger experience by unlocking up to 85% of deck space,” says Survitec.

The boat will officially be launched at the Seatrade Cruise Global rade fair, currently being held in Miami.

Condor joins flying ferry consortium Condor Ferries has joined the Belfast Maritime Consortium and will operate a zero-emission commuter ferry service on Belfast Lough.

Beginning in 2024, the 30-minute ferry service from Bangor Marina to Belfast’s Titanic Quarter will act as a pilot scheme for the passenger ferries currently under development by the consortium, led by Artemis Technologies.

The vessels will be powered by the Artemis eFoiler, enabling them to ’fly’ above the water, which produces minimal wake at high speed while using up to a reported 90% less energy than some conventional ferries.

operation, but it is just the beginning,” said Dr Iain Percy, chief executive and founder of Artemis Technologies.

The Belfast Maritime Consortium is a 14-member syndicate that has brought together a range of industry, academic and public bodies, including Artemis Technologies, Ards and North Down Borough Council, Belfast City Council, Belfast Harbour, Belfast Met, Catalyst, Condor Ferries, Creative Composites, Invest Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland Advanced Composites Engineering, Power NI, Queen’s University Belfast, Spirit AeroSystems, and Ulster University.

The consortium was awarded a grant of £33 million (€39.8 million) by UKRI’s Strength in Places Fund for the £60m project.

LAUNCH AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD A hybrid vessel launched on the Arctic Ocean could be the prototype for a wide range of commercial vessels. At least - that’s the aim Volvo Penta has launched a ground-breaking – or should that be ice-breaking? – tourist boat in one of the world’s most remote and environmentally hostile places.

Volvo Penta and boat builder Marell Boats have called their Kvitbjørn (Polar Bear) ‘a masterpiece in engineering and complexity’ and officially launched it from the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean with tour operator Hurtigruten Svalbard last week.

It is the tour operator’s first hybrid day tour vessel at Svalbard, which is 800 miles south of the North Pole, and will take up to 12 tourists around the Arctic to look for walruses, polar bears, seals and glaciers.

Because of the Volvo Penta integrated engine design, it can be piloted in near silence on battery power only, to avoid disturbing wildlife as well as cut down on fuel consumption.

But while this particular vessel is a tourist boat, it’s just the first of what could be a range of vessels for a wide range of commercial applications, says Volvo Penta Marine Business Unit President Johan Inden.

‘What sets us apart’ Volvo Penta is very proud of its helm-to-propeller twin D4-320 DPI Aquamatic hybrid-electric solution, which enables a seamless propulsion transition, the operator able to shift from diesel engine power to high-capacity batteries and electric motor using a sophisticated Human Machine Interface.

This helm to propeller electric integration, says Inden, is what sets Volvo Penta apart: the joystick control, dynamic positioning system, driver interface, electronic vessel control system, engine and driveline. It also has assisted docking.

“This full systems approach is a key advantage in electromobility transformation – the benefits of which are evident in the Kvitbjørn,” says Inden.

One challenge to overcome for boat builder Marell was to fit the Volvo Penta equipment in its aluminium hull.

“We collaborated from the beginning to identify the ideal boat design for the ultimate operation and sightseeing experience,” said Gerard Törneman, Key Account Manager for commercial vessels at Marell.

“Marell’s and Volvo Penta’s technicians have worked well together regarding the design and installation of important supporting systems for the arctic climate, like heating, ventilation, and charging system. This kind of collaboration is essential with hybrid and electric solutions to ensure the technology is an ideal fit for the intended use case.”

While the diesel engines are running they charge the lithium batteries, which are always monitored for remaining running power. In the event of fire, which with lithium-ion batteries is rare but does happen, the battery room can be flooded.

“The problem with batteries normally is they need to be cooled to between 13-21oC,” says Inden. “In this boat they will

actually need to be warmed, and this will be done by the heating system.”

Commercial potential At the moment Volvo Penta earns 70% of its revenue in the leisure space, the rest in commercial. This, Inden says, should change to about 50-50, partly because of emissions legislation, which they can predict will affect commercial shipping first.

“We see electromobility as an enabler for many marine commercial operations that have short, dedicated journeys,” Inden says.

“They are already using hybrid boats in the commercial sector, for crew transfer, offshore wind and in patrol boats.

Service vessels make the biggest climate footprint and they are being pushed to find solutions. They need to transform their business.

“The technology is now much more mature, and boat builders are all interested in when they can move to the next technology.”

As well as piloting the vessel itself, the business model is being tested – in this case, a ‘power-by-the-hour’ payment programme, in which Hurtigruten Svalbard will pay Volvo Penta for its system by the kilowatt hour of operation.

For early adopters it could be an attractive way to get into e-mobility at sea, because while long-term costs, such as fuel, should be lower, the initial investment is often far greater.

“The driveline is more expensive because of the batteries and so on, so we wondered if there was a service model potential,” says Inden.

“We are thinking about a subscription model to pay for the driveline investment – where we can constantly monitor the driveline and any changes, which we can address on our digital twin in Gothenburg. This would be even more important in the commercial sector – we think this part of the business model would be an even better fit there than in the leisure sector.”

Kvitbjørn will now continue its first season in the Arctic, which will run until October.

THORDON BEARINGS SIGNS MULTI-VESSEL AGREEMENT Thordon Bearings has signed a deal that includes supply of water-lubricated and grease-free bearings for a fleet of newbuilds Supply is for several fleet boats under construction at the FMT Shipyard & Repair facility in Louisiana, USA, for workboat owner Maritime Partners.

Keel-cooled engine unveiled at Nor-Shipping A keel-cooling system launched at the NorShipping event last week obviates the need for salt water in the engine.

The C16 600 Keel Cooling system, by NPT Industrial and its partner and distributor Frydenbø Industri, is positioned along the keel or incorporated into the hull itself, which means it is always in contact with the water.

HYDRAMEC ASSISTS WITH SHACKLETON DISCOVERY Lost for a century: Ernest Shackleton’s ship discovered on the Antarctic seabed

To withstand the temperature of the Weddell Sea, the winches had to be made out of aluminium, and together with their cables they had to weigh less than 1.5 tonnes in case they had to be helicoptered onto ice Hydramec, with 3.5mm fibre optic cable tethered to an autonomous unmanned vehicle (AUV) to gather real-time data while the wreck was being surveyed. It meant the images could be viewed by the crew without having to bring the AUV back to the Endurance22.

The expedition that discovered of explorer Ernest Shackleton’s long-lost Endurance in the Antarctic Ocean was helped along with winching equipment and controls from Hydramec and its supplier Scantrol, the firms say.

Ernest Shackleton’s ship sank in the Weddell Sea in the Antarctic in 1915. He and his crew abandoned ship, then survived for 20 months in the bitter cold of the Antarctic.

Endurance lay undiscovered until March, when a team from the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust found it on an Endurance22 expedition.

Two 25,000m winches were provided to the expedition by

continuous adjustable tension on the cable.

The researchers worked from the South African polar research and logistics vessel S.A. Agulhas II, owned by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment. Saab’s Sabertooth hybrid underwater search vehicles were used to find the wreck, the team said.

There are no plans to raise Endurance from its icy grave. ”The wreck is protected as a Historic Site and Monument under the Antarctic Treaty, ensuring that whilst it is being surveyed and filmed it will not be disturbed in any way,” the team said. “We are overwhelmed by our good fortune in having located and captured images of Endurance,” said Mensun Bound, director of exploration on the expedition. ”This is by far the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen. It is upright, well proud of the seabed, intact, and in a brilliant state of preservation.

You can even see “Endurance” arced across the stern, directly below the taffrail. This is a milestone in polar history.”

Shackleton died in 1922 on board Quest, while it was anchored off South Georgia.

Wärtsilä ordered to provide equipment for new RoRo Wärtsilä is to supply the main and auxiliary engines, fuel storage tanks, gas handling equipment and electrical systems for a new RoRo being built for Australian operator SeaRoad Shipping.

The 210 metre vessel, primarily fuelled by LNG, is under construction at the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) shipyard in Germany.

“We recognise Wärtsilä’s strong capabilities in LNG-related technologies, as well as their capabilities in electrical systems, and these solutions are an excellent fit for this vessel,” commented Philip Maracke, chief executive of FSG. The vessel will be powered by two Wärtsilä 46DF dual-fuel main engines and

three Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines. The fuel gas handling system and LNG tanks are designed with the gas valve units integrated into the tank connection space, a solution said to be unique to Wärtsilä which reduces the amount of piping needed, making installation easier.

Wärtsilä will also deliver most electrical

systems, including bridge consoles with integrated navigation, redundant dual-gyro compass systems, nautical sensors, external communication systems, power take-in and take-out shaft alternators with multi-drive technology, monitoring and control systems, switchboards, internal communication, and safety systems as well as lighting.

Electrical installation will commence in this year, whilst the bulk of Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery to the yard during the first half of 2023.

Expected to complete by the end of next year, the vessel will have 3,987 lane metres for various freight units and will sail on Bass Strait, between Melbourne, Victoria and Devonport on the Australian island state of Tasmania.

PHARMA POLLUTES QUARTER OF WORLD’S RIVERS – STUDY A university report has shown that a quarter of the world’s rivers contain pharmaceuticals at potentially toxic levels Rivers in more than half of the world’s countries were sampled in one of the most comprehensive studies of its kind ever carried out.

Among some of the effects it found was a growing addiction to methamphetamines (speed) in fish and their feminisation, potentially affecting human populations, the study said.

UK University of York’s Global Monitoring of Pharmaceuticals Project looked at rivers on every continent and included 36 countries that had never been sampled before.

The only country sampled that did not contain any of the 61 pharmaceutical products targeted was Iceland.

At the other end of the scale, the Kai Tak River in Hong Kong was revealed to contain 34 of the 61 products.

Among some of the effects it found was a growing addiction to methamphetamines (speed) in fish and their feminisation, potentially affecting human populations, the study said “We’ve known for over two decades now that pharmaceuticals make their way into the aquatic environment, where they may affect the biology of living organisms,” said John Wilkinson, co-leader of the project which has been done within the department of environment and geography.

“Through our project, knowledge of the global distribution of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment has now been considerably enhanced. This one study presents data from more countries around the world that the entire scientific community was previously aware of: 36 new countries, to be precise, where only 75 had ever been studied before.”

Key findings included the most frequently detected pharmaceutical, Carbamazepine, which is used in the treatment of epilepsy and nerve pain, and was found in 62% of sample sites.

Other very common products found were antidepressants and sleeping pills, and potentially harmful ones included beta-blockers, antibiotics and antihistamines.

The most polluted sampling was from Bolivia, in the Rio Seke, which had a cumulative pharmaceutical concentration of 297 μg/litre. This is 115 times higher than that found in New York’s East River, the report said.

Concentrations of at least one pharmaceutical were above levels which may be toxic to algae, fish or daphnia (common water fleas) at a quarter of sampled sites.

The researchers also said that increasing such monitoring would provide data that could help develop strategies to limit the effects of such pollution.

CMA CGM bans plastic on ships Plastic is to be banned on of CMA CGM’s fleet of 500 vessels.

French shipping giant CMA CGM says it will not carry plastic waste on its ships after June 1, 2022 to ‘protect the oceans and biodiversity’.

It has already banned the loading of waste on to its vessels as of April 15.

The firm says it has set up an HS code for commodities and that false declarations will lead to firms being blacklisted.

“Every year, around 10 million tons of plastic waste end up in the sea,” said the company. “Unless action is taken, that figure is set to triple over the next 20 years to reach

29 million tons per year, which will cause irreversible damage to marine ecosystems, fauna and flora.”

CMA CGM says the plastic pollution comes from open-air storage and the absence of processing infrastructure for plastic waste that does not get recycled.

“With the decision, CMA CGM will prevent this type of waste from being exported to destinations where sorting, recycling or recovery cannot be assured,” it says.

According to the charity Greenpeace, researchers estimate that 12 million tonnes of plastic finds its way into the oceans every year, and that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

PROJECT SET UP TO ADDRESS PLASTIC IN SEAS ‘One of the most pressing issues in marine ecosystems of our time’ is being addressed in a project launched by the IMO

8 Plastic litter is steadily choking the world’s oceans

A project to try to tackle the growing problem of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans has been launched by UN entities and the private sector.

The GloLitter Partnerships project will aim to tackle ’one of the most pressing issues in marine ecosystems of our time’, says the IMO, which has launched the scheme under a new Global Industry Alliance.

It is an alliance of the Norwegian government, International Maritime Organisation and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation. ”Plastic waste has reached all the world’s oceans, fuelled by approximately 8 million additional pieces of plastic pollution finding their way into the seven seas every single day,” says NTNU Oceans, part of the Norwegian University of Science and technoloogy. ”From macroplastics to microplastics, to chemicals

leaching from the plastics, it is all a threat to reaching the goals set out in UN Sustainability Goal 14 for a healthy and sustainable ocean.”

Key goals set out include helping developing countries to prevent and reduce marine litter, especially plastic, within transport and fisheries sectors and identify how to reduce the use of plastics in both industries. ”GloLitter will expand government and port management capacities, instigate legal, policy and institutional reforms at the country level,” the organisation says. ”The project will develop mechanisms for sustainability, and enhance regional cooperation to support transition of maritime transport and fisheries sectors towards a low plastics future.”

Collecte Localisation Satellites, Wilhelmsen Ships Service Marine Products, Vow ASA, Aker Biomarine, and Container Overboard System are also on board with the project.

Rules on rubbish extended to 100t ships The IMO has agreed that ships above 100t should provide a Garbage Record Book in which to record all disposal and incineration operations.

An amendment made in the IMO’s International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) has changed rules for smaller ships in garbage recording.

MARPOL Annex V bans the discharge of all garbage into the sea, except as provided in other requiremnts related to food waste, cargo residues, cleaning agents and additives and animal carcasses.

Under Annex V in the original requirements, only ships above 400t had to carry a Garbage Record Book, but now this will apply to much smaller ships.

Now all sbips above 100t will have to carry

a record book, with details of the time, date time of occurrence and details of the loss.

Fishing gear Discussing the amendments at a subcommittee meeting, members also suggested fishing gear should be marked and mandatory reporting of lost fishing gear implemented.

The Correspondence Group on Marine Plastic Litter from Ships was instructed to consider draft amendments to support the implementation of the draft amendments.

The sub-committee was advised that a mandatory obligation for the marking of fishing gear at this stage would be a challenge and that for optimal results, the voluntary guidelines should be linked to a global vessel registration system.

Fouling guidelines Meanwhile, the sub-committee finalised the draft text of revised guidelines to support implementation of the AFS Convention, following the adoption in 2021 of amendments to include controls on the biocide cybutryne.

The amendments require that ships shall not apply or re-apply anti-fouling systems containing this substance from 1 January 2023.

Ships should remove or apply a sealer coating to AFS with this substance at the next scheduled renewal of the anti-fouling system after 1 January 2023, but no later than 60 months following the last application to the ship of an anti-fouling system containing cybutryne.
