A green hydrogen hub is being planned in the Scottish Highlands that will produce, store and distribute hydrogen to the region, Scotland, other parts of the UK and Europe. The Port of Cromarty Firth is one of the partners involved in the North of Scotland Hydrogen Programme that aims to develop a hub in the Cromarty Firth to help Scotland advance its hydrogen technology. This follows recently announced plans to manufacture and use green hydrogen at the Port of Nigg, opposite the Port of Cromarty Firth via the Cromarty Firth. Bob Buskie, chief executive
of the port, said such a hub would “provide a massive boost to Scotland’s ambitions of decarbonising its economy and establishing itself as global leaders in green hydrogen technology, a sector still in its infancy”. He added: “In the short term, we have a number of local partners with vast experience in hydrogen, distilling and utility provision who want to decarbonise their operations. And in the long term, there is a huge opportunity to decarbonise Highland industry, transport and heat, as well as exporting green hydrogen to other parts of the UK and

mainland Europe, which doesn’t have the same offshore wind capacity as Scotland.” One of the programme’s projects will provide distilleries in the region with hydrogen to decarbonise the heating of their distilleries and maltings. Green hydrogen is created using electrolysers powered by electricity from renewable sources. Power would be supplied from current and future wind farms off the coast of the Cromarty Firth, as well as onshore schemes, and fed to the hub.
EDDA WIND PREPARES FOR IPO With additional investment required to further capitalize on renewables market potential, joint owners of Edda Wind, Wilhelmsen and Østensjø, have agreed to seek an initial public offering on Euronext Growth Oslo (formerly Merkur Market). Anticipating long-term growth for the renewable energy sector, the company has also placed an order for two additional Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOV), bringing its fleet up to eight. Launched in 2018, Edda Wind owns and operates service vessels supporting the maintenance work conducted during the commissioning and operation of offshore wind parks. “The Wilhelmsen group’s strategy is very clear, to further expand into renewables, by

LAUNCH OF NEW RESCUE CRUISER DELAYED BY COVID
8 | MARCH 2021
NX 700 Navtex and a WS 200 Weatherstation mit RD33 Display and FLIR M-618 C S warm picture camera - both the latter system-integrated. Raytheon Anschütz supplied the boat’s STD30MF gyro, repeater compass 360/10, rudder-Indicator und Pilotstar NX autosteering as well as three FU Tillers. Other equipment includes a Zöllner Zetfon 400/310 Typhon and Signal generator and two Virgo S450 remote controlled searchlights and two SS190 searchlights with special bow search light. Like its predecessors, the multi-functional SK41 carries a crew of four and is self-righting. It also has state-of- the-art firefighting and medical equipment. The cruiser’s 8.2m stern-launched tender has an automatic launch system. Also built by Fassmer the SK41 tender is driven by a 170kW Steyr SE 236 E40 marine diesel over ZF 220V gears. It also houses Sailor VHF radios, Raymarine Quantum-radar, Echolot and Axiom Pro 16 MFDs as well as Dose searchlights. The current series of DGzRs 28m Class cruisers ends in autumn with SK42 - also being built at Fassmer. Curiously, and like SK40 Hamburg, its name is already known: Nis Randers.
8 SK41 is floated out at Fassmer but its official launch may not be for some time
8 SK41 ready for off in the Baltic name to follow
Photo: DGzRS
Ralf Baur, a spokesman for the German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS) in Bremen, told Maritime Journal: “We have postponed naming indefinitely due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions associated with that. At the moment we do not know when it will take place”. In the meantime SK41 - the latest state-of-the-art SAR cruiser to join the DGzRS - has gone into operation in the Baltic out of Grömitz on the Bay of Lübeck, where it arrived at the end of January from Weser builders Fassmer Werft. The SK41 launching delay mirrors that of another rescue cruiser launch hit by the Covid pandemic nearly a year ago. The DGzRS had to scrap a lavish official naming ceremony and concert for the SAR cruiser SK40-Hamburg in 2020 because of Covid. Like SK41, SK40 went straight into rescue service and saw impressive action before being officially named in a small ceremony in Bremen in July. The same now appears to be happening with the 27.9m long and 6.2m wide SK41, the most modern 28m Class SAR cruiser ever for the DGzRS. Since floating out last October, it has undergone extensive sea trials including full throttle engine tests and course changing at top speed. It has also impressively demonstrated its pulling power by towing the biggest ship in the DGzRS fleet - the tough, 45.6m, 400 ton, Hermann Marwede - based on Heligoland in the German Bight. According to Ralf Baur, many of the components in SK41 have already proved themselves well in tough service on previous DGzRS boats. “As a result, apart from marginal changes, they have also been installed in the latest cruiser”, he said. Drawing 1.95m and displacing 120 tons, SK41 is equipped with two MTU 16-cylinder Series 2000 M72 engines each of 1,440kw. They operate over ZF 5000 reverse gearings with Geislinger couplings and Shaffran shafts onto fixed propellers. MTU said the engines had been developed for extreme weather operation and provided 24 knots. It also said they were designed to keep running during heavy listing or 360° righting and noted that the 2000 M72s boasted a special ‘rough kit’. That includes an extra-deep oil pan with special purpose bulkheads, a modified crankcase breather system and specially adapted engine control. SK41’s auxiliary power plant comprises a Type BF 1013 M auxiliary from Deutz, a Leror Somer LSAM 44.2 generator and a Sauer-Sundstrand 90 Hydraulic pump as well as a Whisperpower SQ 27 generator. Baur said the Deutz supplies the power for SK41’s hydraulic 75kW Jastram bow thruster and its Jöhstadt NP400 fire extinguishing pump. Communications equipment delivered and installed by Alphatron includes three 6000 Series Sailor VHF radios, a Furuno FS1575 SSB transceiver, ATIS voice recorder and Schnoor SARCOM, as well as ICOM M73 handheld VHF units and a Rhoteta RT 500-M radio direction finder. Furuno nautical and electronic gear includes two FAR-22x8 BB Radar units each with TimeZero plotter and Furuno-Chart Backup, an FE800 Echolot/Graph, GP 170 DGPS, FA 170 AIS,

PROFILE
ARIE PALMERS DangerousLadders If you’re intent on getting a message out about dangerous, potentially fatal mistakes to the man in the street, “you need to use street language - not three pages of technical text”, Dutch pilot Arie Palmers told MJ. After being involved in a couple of minor pilot ladder incidents himself inside a two week stretch, Palmers started to keep notes - and he was shocked. “My own tally showed that a staggering 57% of the pilot boarding arrangements I encountered were non-compliant,” he said. Palmers is taking every opportunity to spread the word: for example, he keeps on him a single-page diagram showing both the right and wrong ways to fasten a ladder retrieval line: “I always have them in my bag so I can hand them out. Just a picture, it’s simple.” He’s also a regular contributor to the ‘DangerousLadder’ FaceBook community with articles that don’t just state the facts but help people understand what the cluster of IMO and ISO regulations and standards really say - and the consequences of misinterpretation. For example, he made the point that the
maximum height for one pilot ladder is not 9m above the bottom of the ladder, it’s 9m above the water.... “If you fall from more than that you’ll more than likely die... from 10 metres, it’s like driving into a wall at 50km/h,” he explained. But he really doesn’t want to “point fingers” he said: “A blame game” just stands to alienate the people you need to work with. He is getting good results: “A lot of shipping companies send me emails asking about the design of pilot boarding arrangements, I always say I can’t speak for the industry so I’ll only answer on my own behalf.... but I’m very happy to do that.” While some of the solution takes a little work, like replacing unsafe fixtures and fittings, much of it is straightforward, such as putting up diagrams in the pilot ladder station: “You can’t expect the deck crew to look it up in a big book,” he said. But the balance is an artform nevertheless: “You have to keep it simple”, he underlined. The campaigning is paying off: a handful of players such as MSC and Wilson have already
Save one guy, you start to save the world
‘‘
incorporated the points into their ships ship’s safety management and others, like Maersk, are following suit. Importantly, Palmers underlined he isn’t alone. The group he’s now helping to administrate has turned into something far more than a simple FaceBook page. Membership has recently passed the 3,000 mark and the community is no longer just pilots, he says, now it includes ship crews, surveyors, PSC-officers, vetting inspectors, class agencies, ladder manufacturers, NGOs, and both shipping company employees and owners. He added: “It’s become a huge thinktank - and it’s being taken seriously by the maritime industry”. And for anyone out there wondering what they can do themselves, he has a word of wisdom: “Save one guy, you start to save the world.”

WORLD’S FIRST SHIP TUNNEL GETS CLOSER TO REALITY After two years of study and analysis, government approval has been given for the building of what is claimed to be the World’s first ship tunnel The vast project will link two protected stretches of water on the west coast of Norway and allow for safer winter passage-making along this wild coastline. The approval came in the allocation letter from Norway’s Ministry of Transport and Communications to the Norwegian Coastal Administration, defining the tasks that are to be initiated. “We will now start the processes of acquisitioning properties in the area where the ship tunnel will be located, as well as put in place a project organisation, and then initiate and prepare a tender.” said Terje Andreassen, the project’s temporary manager for the Stadt Ship Tunnel.
The proposed size of the tunnel has been largely dictated by the size of the Hurtigruten ferry ships that operate along the Norwegian coast but other users are expected to be cargo and fishing ships The project is estimated to cost NOK 2.8 billion and NOK 75 million of this sum has been allocated for start up funding. The aim is to sign up a contractor during 2021, which will allow construction to start in 2022 and the project has a construction period of three to four years. “If everything goes according to plan, the world’s first full-scale ship tunnel will be completed in 2025/2026,” said Andreassen. The construction of the tunnel will allow ships to bypass the exposed and dangerous waters of the Stadthavet Sea which is one of the most challenging areas along the Norwegian coast thus allowing shipping to stay in sheltered waters.
The tunnel will be 1700 metres long and its construction will require the removal of 3 million cubic metres of rock using blasting and drilling techniques. The completed tunnel will have a height of 25 metres above the water level and a water depth of 12 metres. The overall width will be 36 metres but an integrated fendering barrier on each side will reduce the shipping width to 26.5 metres. The proposed size of the tunnel has been largely dictated by the size of the Hurtigruten ferry ships that operate along the Norwegian coast but other users are expected to be cargo and fishing ships. In addition to the tunnelling the project envisages alongside waiting areas at each entrance and there is also the possibility of establishing a commercial area at the tunnel and the prospect of making the tunnel a tourist attraction with the construction of a walkway through it.

Southbay Civil Engineering Limited and Wirral Borough Council have been awarded the Civil Engineering Contractors Association Small Project of the Year award for the North West Region in the UK. The award relates to the successful delivery of the New Brighton Aids to Navigation scheme, a technically and operationally challenging coastal project delivered at the height of the tourist season. The project involved the replacement of three Navigational Structures, constructed in the 1980s to mark submerged offshore coastal defences within the Mersey Estuary. Recognition was given by the judges to the need for developing an alternative design which allowed the project to be delivered in accordance with a restricted budget and

Challenging navaids upgrade job recognised The three Navigation Structures were installed from a 250 tonne jack up barge due to the need to work within the inter tidal zone. In addition to a piled foundation, the Navigational Aids also include a superstructure which consists of a gantry complete with handrailing. The superstructure was pre-fabricated off-site, allowing it to be installed in a single lift, thereby minimising the onsite programme. The new Navigational Structures include a fixed light which can be seen for three nautical miles. The construction of new deep-sea and inland shipping quays will allow these companies to develop the other sites around this harbour and both terminal operators have already signed the relevant options. The project also includes the construction of a 160-metre waiting area for general use by inland shipping vessels. The potential additional container traffic of 4 million TEUs is equivalent to an increase in capacity of about 28 percent over the 2020 annual total.
We are paying particular attention to reducing emissions during the operation
‘‘
The new building work will be on either side of the harbour, which is approximately 2.5km long. This will include 1,825 metres of deep-sea quay, 160 metres of inland shipping quay and 360 metres of soil-retaining walls. This means that apart from 725 metres, the entire harbour basin, which first went into use in 2015, will be enclosed. The completion of the first 500 metres of quay wall is expected in late 2022. The final part of the project will be completed no more than eighteen months later. In addition to the construction of the quays, which will have a retaining height of 29 metres, the work also involves dredging the quays to a depth of more than 20 metres below sea level. A rear crane track will be built on piles over a distance of approximately 1.8km for the rear legs of the container cranes that will be used here.
The quays will be fitted with a wide range of sensors to monitor forces and any deformation. In addition, ECOncrete blocks will be used at two locations to act as artificial reefs and encourage biodiversity below the water. “We are paying particular attention to reducing emissions during the operation,” says Mark van der Hoeven, Netherlands director with Van Oord. “By deploying equipment powered by Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO diesel) plus using electric construction equipment, we are fully in line with the Port Authority’s ambitions to significantly reduce harmful emissions.”
8 The new building work will be on either side of the harbour, which is approximately 2.5kms long
Suction anchor pumping system The Alfa Laval company and pump manufacturer Framo, will supply pumping systems for foundations of Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm project. It is the second order for pumping systems in this application and marks an important milestone as it applies the company’s extensive experience from the offshore industry to renewable energy applications. Suction anchor technology has an environmentally friendly footprint. Besides lowering costs due to the increased installation speed, the concept provides for easy decommissioning and a practically noise-free installation. The technology of suction and bucket foundation has secured and safely anchored platforms and offshore installations around the world since the 1990s. Now, the concept of bucket foundation has been adapted for offshore wind turbines foundations. Framo is meeting the market demand by offering complete pumping systems required for the installation of the turbine foundations.

MARINE CIVILS Work is in progress in Norway on the building of the concrete hulls for what will be the World’s largest floating wind project. Aker Solutions have started work on the structures that will carry the turbines at the Hywind Tampen floating offshore wind farm. Aker, through their associate company Kværner, began the concrete slip-forming at the construction site at Stord with close to 1.2kms of slip-forming involved. The company has selected German engineering company Dominion for the design, supply, and supervision services for the slip-form systems that will erect the concrete floats for the Hywind Tampen floating wind project. Dominion said its cylindrical and conical sets of slip-form systems can be used multiple times and include the hydraulic jacking system, form-work material, yokes and the required decks. Concrete is poured continuously, up to 24 hours a day if necessary, with the form work steadily elevated to create the designed shape. This technology features low manpower needs, plus safe and fast execution. Kværner, which merged with Aker Solutions last year, is in charge of the engineering, procurement, and construction of the floating concrete substructures for Hywind Tampen

under a contract worth around €146 million. The company will also deliver marine operations in a 50/50 joint venture with DOF Subsea. The construction work started at the
end of 2020 and Hywind Tampen will comprise 11 Siemens Gamesa 8mW turbines installed on concrete SPAR-type floating foundations about 140km off the Norwegian coast. Developed by Equinor, together with its Snorre and Gullfaks partners, the 88mW Hywind Tampen floating wind farm will be the first of its kind to produce power for oil & gas platforms. The eleven Siemens Gamesa 8mW turbines are expected to cover about 35 per cent of the annual power needs on the five platforms, Snorre A and B and Gullfaks A, B and C in the Norwegian North Sea. Located about 140 kilometres off the Norwegian coast in water depths of between 260 and 300 metres, Hywind Tampen will reduce emissions from the Gullfaks and Snorre fields by more than 200,000 tonnes per year, once it is operational in 2022. The wind farm will be directly connected to the Gullfaks and Snorre oil & gas platforms, becoming the World’s first such offshore wind farm.

WORKS IN PROGRESS The French Port of Le Havre has awarded a significant contract to the NGE Group for construction work to adapt a quay in the harbour. The development is to meet the requirements for cargo handling at the Siemens Gamesa’s offshore wind turbine factory that is under construction at the port. The factory, that extends to over 22-hectares, is under construction on the Joannès Couvert Quay in the harbour and when completed it will be the first in the world to manufacture all of the main offshore wind turbine components under the same roof. The factory is expected to be completed and brought into service in early 2022 and it will supply turbines to the Fécamp and SaintBrieuc offshore wind projects that are under construction offshore in the English Channel. NGE is a major French civil engineering company that operates through a number of subsidiary companies. For this Le Havre project the work will be carried out by NGE Genie Civil, Guintoli, NGE Fondations, and Maia Sonnier. The construction work that will be carried out will be to build a roll-on, roll-off berth at the Joannès Couvert Quay to handle incoming components for the factory. In order to handle the heavy wind turbine components

HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY
EXPEDITIONARY SURVEY BOAT COMPLETED A newbuild Expeditionary Survey Boat (ESB) that provides insight into underwater conditions has been completed for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLSN)
FACILITATING SAFE NAVIGATION The Hydrograaf’s main tasks are gathering environmental information to make decisions about the possibilities of an amphibious operation; performing hydrographic survey operations in support of emergency relief operations; and supporting with civil hydrographic tasks on the national continental shelf. This ESB will provide up-to-date information about the soil conditions and the situation below the waterline in places where that insight is required. With this information, the RNLSN supports expeditionary maritime operations and provides an environment in which ships can navigate safely. 24t HOLDING WEIGHT The Hydrograaf can receive a maximum weight of 24t, in connection with the maximum permissible loading weight of the Davits hoisting installation on ships such as HNLMS Johan de Witt. At the same time, the ship was designed to reach a speed of at least 20 knots, with very low noise requirements

Last month, the naming ceremony of the 16m long Hydrograaf ESB took place at Damen Shipyards Den Helder (DSDH). After the naming ceremony, the ESB was symbolically handed over by DSDH to the Defense Materiel Organization (DMO). The ESB is now being prepared for handover to the RNLSN, which will start operating the vessel after a work-up period of several weeks. The design and construction of the Hydrograaf was realised in close collaboration between the DMO and DSDH. Peter van den Berg of DSDH, said: “Our project manager, together with the Ministry of Defence team, delivered a hightech performance in the design and construction of this new type of ship.”
and has met the challenge of limited space for carrying hydrographic equipment. The ESB can be deployed from the so-called big decks, such as on Zr. Ms. Johan de Witt. The ESB can independently perform hydrographic surveys under tactical conditions at a greater distance from the mother ship. She is a fully fledged platform that is comparable to a hydrographic survey vessel (HOV) and meets the highest survey standards. The name Hydrograaf has been chosen in honour of the National Inspection Vessel Hydrograaf from 1910, as well as being a reference to the primary task.

HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY HydroSurv Unmanned Survey is joining forces with Sonardyne to develop and demonstrate seabed-to-shore sensing and data acquisition technologies. Through a collaborative project, partfunded by Innovate UK through its Robotics for a Safer World: extension project, Unmanned Surface Vehicle builder and operator HydroSurv’s REAV-40 USV will be paired with intelligent seafloor and vessel-mounted instruments from Sonardyne. These will then be used in combination with internet-based cloud- services to provide an end-to-end seabed-data-to-shore service initially targeted towards the offshore wind industry. Key elements of the project include a self-transiting USV, acoustic positioning of and data harvesting from seabed instruments, real-time gathering of geo-referenced current profile data and live relay of information to operatives onshore through secure cloudbased systems. The project will also demonstrate the ability to overcome potential navigational limitations working in and around wind farms. The key instrument package includes Sonardyne’s Mini-Ranger 2 Ultra-Short BaseLine (USBL) acoustic positioning system and its SPRINT-Nav hybrid acoustic-INS

and access to cloud-based services, this package provides an integrated suite of capabilities to maximise the use of USVs for intelligent data harvesting operations in remote offshore environments. Founded in 2019, HydroSurv has seen rapid expansion of its technologies into inland and nearshore waters. This latest project, which officially launches in April 2021, will see the company now enter the offshore domain. The culmination of the project will be a series of demonstrations at an operational offshore windfarm site within the UK. “The coronavirus pandemic has further underlined the benefit of using resilient USVs and flexible instruments, which enable continuous data-flow without sending personnel offshore” said David Hull, Founder & CEO at HydroSurv. “This has never been more important than today to safeguard routine monitoring and survey capabilities. Over the longer term, this approach will reduce the cost, risk, time and carbon footprint of gathering operational data.”

SVITZER EXPANSION IN GERMANY AND BEYOND
18 | MARCH 2021
such as our new 62tbp ASD tug, Svitzer Vestri in our Emden operation typifies this approach. Our presence and scale as a global towage operator is also a significant differentiator. We can flexibly deploy our fleet to meet changing demand patterns and respond to customer needs even if it requires us to call vessels from further afield. We leverage our global scale to provide attractive and integrated offerings to our customers; if they need us, we can be there.” Mr Hellström reports that the impact of Covid-19 has caused considerable upheaval in port traffic which has not been uniform in every hub, container ports not impacted as severely as others. In the medium term, he sees the pandemic possibly become a catalyst, accelerating the rate of change for towage and summing up he states: “We are committed to embracing innovation and exploring new technologies that can make our operations safer and more efficient and we recognise that the human element behind towage is our core business differentiator. This is why we always ensure our highly skilled crew are equipped with the right tools and processes to keep themselves and our customers’ assets and cargo safe.”

Svitzer Europe announced expansion within its German and Scandinavian operations recently including arrival of the newbuild 62tbp tug Svitzer Vestri and talking exclusively to MJ, Mattias Hellström, chief commercial officer, Svitzer Europe has described the importance of the region and changing requirements including in Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Mr Hellström describes Emden and Bremerhaven as ‘key North Sea hubs powering German trade’ Emden being Europe’s biggest roro port and a significant export terminal for Germany’s automotive sector. He sees significant potential at Emden, stating: “We conducted rigorous analysis of the ships and customers calling at the port which allowed us to create a strong business case to start operations in the hub in January 2021. Meanwhile in Bremerhaven we have been offering towage services to customers since 2013 and initiated a line-handling business in July 2020.” The expansion in terms of entry into a new port and widening of the services Svitzer offers aligns with its customer-focused commercial growth strategy, Mr Hellström stating: “This strategy guarantees that if there are new sustainable ways to support our customer base and provide flexible and safe operations, we will pursue them. Our global and strong regional presence allows us to work with customers across the full span of their operations, and both Emden and Bremerhaven are an important element of executing that vision. What is also key for Svitzer is that we maintain the same high standards of safety and operational excellence that span all of our operations globally.” Considering towing industry trends in general a theme when reporting tug deliveries in this column is the demand to service ever-larger ships alongside increases in trade and the never-ending drive for efficiency of operations in what is a highly competitive market. Customers are also attracted to a single provider of towage services where possible so with around 440 vessels operating in over 30 countries Svitzer (part of Maersk) is well placed, back to Mr Hellström again. “Germany’s trends and challenges are a small example of the same changes that we are seeing across the industry. Ports in the region are having to serve larger vessels and more complex and diverse call outs. They also have to continue to underpin their local supply chains and particularly in the North Sea, service entirely new or growing sectors such as offshore wind. All these trends, which we expect will only accelerate in the coming years are heaping pressure on towage operators and are happening at a time of unprecedented strain, particularly with the continuous challenge that Covid-19 presents for our operations.” Mr Hellström describes the towage industry’s role as ‘the custodians of the first and last mile of global seaborne trade’ while coping with the wider transformations taking place within the industry and underpinning safe operations within the port environment. Regarding this he states: “At Svitzer we look to respond to these changes by constantly looking at our available resources and aiming to be customer-focused, dynamic and responsive. Our decision to deploy modern manoeuvrable tugs

SANMAR REFLECTS ON A BUSY 2020
Credit: Sanmar
Sanmar Shipyards is reflecting on a challenging but productive 2020, delivering a vessel almost every two weeks. The whole industry has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic but 2020 was still a record year for Sanmar who delivered 30 tugs, 13 of which were for overseas clients, including 10 for Turkish operators, seven of which joined Sanmar’s own fleet. Overseas customers for the vessels, all Robert Allan Ltd designs were from: Canada, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Oman, Panama, Seychelles, UAE and UK. Total bollard pull of tugs delivered was just under 1,700t, each vessel within the range 30t to 85t and 18m to 32m length and based on: RAscal 1800; RAmparts 2200SX and 2400SX; TRAktor 2500SX; RAstar 2800E, 2900SX and 3200SX and finally twin-screw conventional RApport 1900SX designs. Separately, Sanmar has announced that the ‘ground-breaking historic free trade deal’ between Turkey and the UK provides ‘vital certainty for businesses and protects thousands of jobs in both countries and is excellent news.’ The trade deal came into force on 1 January and secures existing preferential tariffs between Turkey and the UK following the latter’s exit from the EU, also laying the groundwork for a more ambitious UK-Turkey
free trade relationship in the near future. Sanmar has delivered a total of 24 tugs to UK operators, three of which were in 2020 including the two powerful 80tbp RAstar 3200SX terminal tugs Odin of Scapa and Thor of Scapa for Orkney Islands Council and the 70tbp Bogacay class tug Queensferry, at the time for Targe Towing (recently acquired by Forth Ports Authority) to operate for INEOS at Hound Point on the Firth of Forth. The trade agreement was signed by UK International Trade Secretary Liz Truss and Turkey’s Minister for Trade Ruhsar Pekcan during a video call late last year with Sanmar’s

We are delighted that this deal has been done and are excited at the possibilities that the prospect of even closer ties between our two countries will provide. The signing of this agreement means we can continue to build on the excellent business relationships that we have with our friends in the UK. It enables us to focus on nurturing long-term partnerships with existing clients, while also offering attractive costeffective terms to potential new customers.”

In another sign of consolidation within the towage industry Boluda Towage has acquired the port towage activities of Iskes Towage & Salvage. The agreement, signed recently in Amsterdam between Vicente Boluda Ceballos of Boluda Towage SL and Jim Iskes, owner of Iskes Towage & Salvage covers Iskes’ port towage activities in Eemshaven, Lubeck and Lisbon as well as its offshore activities, together with management and staff at Iskes’ IJmuiden head office. The transaction sees Iskes remaining a separate entity of Boluda with its local management team headed by managing director Ronald Vergouwen and former owner Jim Iskes remaining as strategic advisor. Iskes will focus on strengthening and further expanding Boluda’s offshore activities in northwest Europe ‘with a close watch on the Baltic market, Kiel Channel and Poland.’ Boluda chairman Vicente Boluda Fos said they have ‘been long friends of Iskes’ while Jim Iskes states: ‘We are very happy to join the Boluda Group because it is also a familyowned company, with short direct lines and a similar spirit. We could not be more pleased with this combined organisation and asset portfolio. Although we find ourselves in
8 Iskes’ fleet transfer to Svitzer will include its offshore activities
exceptionally challenging times at this very moment, we are committed to consolidate Boluda’s future prospects, to continue strengthening Boluda’s position as European tugboat market leader, and to open up new opportunities with our innovative attitude.’ Vicente Boluda Fos, Boluda chairman
commented: ‘We have been long friends of Iskes and we value their entrepreneurial spirit and pioneering vision. This is why we are very pleased that they wanted to become part of our Group.’ Boluda has previously experienced synergies with Iskes with the latter’s tug Ginger assisting in Boluda’s operations in the port of London. This is the second item of related news in a year for Iskes when in December 2019 Svitzer announced its takeover of Port Towage Amsterdam in a deal that included nine Iskes tugs and more than 30 staff joining Svitzer’s European fleet. Boluda is following a similar policy of expansion within Europe with completion of its acquisition of Kotug Smit Towage in August 2019. The merger of Boskalis-owned Smit and Kotug International’s harbour towage divisions was in itself a relatively short-lived alliance having been completed in April 2016 increasingly making Svitzer and Boluda the dominant powers in at least the European harbour towage scene.

ROLLS-ROYCE ENGINES FOR FIRST LNG-HYBRID TUG
Credit: Rolls-Royce
MTU gas engines are to power the world’s first LNG-hybrid harbour tug for operation in Singapore, part of a 12-vessel order to be operated by Jurong Marine Services. The push for greener more efficient shiphandling tug operations is definitely on, developments driven by the desire for cost savings and cleaner communities close to ports along with improving efficiencies from operating profiles where engines spend long periods running at low loads but with the ability to deploy maximum power at short notice. These issues will be addressed in this example with flexibility from different modes switching between LNG and battery power with two MTU 16V 4000 M55RN gas engines at the heart of the installation requiring no exhaust gas aftertreatment and emitting no sulphur oxide with particulate emissions ‘below the verification limit’. The engines produce 2,984kW in total at 1,600rpm and with multipoint fuel injection, dynamic engine control and enhanced turbocharging provide dynamic acceleration and high power output. Reduced emissions considerably below current IMO III limits are achieved without the need for exhaust aftertreatment, Rolls-Royce stating ‘the new gas engines are able to deliver performance

comparable to a high-speed diesel engine’. The 65tbp, ABS-classed tug, under construction at Sembcorp Marine is designed by LMG Marin (Norway) - part of the Sembcorp Marine group and the vessel is described as
the first LNG-hybrid tug to be powered by MTU gas engines worldwide with completion estimated for the later part of 2021. This reference is not the first such for Rolls-Royce however, the new MTU gas engines are already installed in ferries operated by Dutch shipping company Rederij Doeksen in the specially protected Wadden Sea, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Meanwhile, a Lake Constance ferry operated by Stadtwerke Konstanz will also start operating in 2021 with the new MTU gas engines. Jurong Marine Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine and as mentioned this reference is the first of 12 tugs Sembcorp Marine plans to design and build between now and 2025 to replace existing diesel-powered tonnage. Sembcorp themselves are a significant global engineering company based in Singapore with supporting shipyards throughout the Far East along with one in Brazil. Its European interests include Gravifloat AS in Norway and Sembmarine SLP in Lowestoft, Suffolk UK.

WIDE-RANGING ACTIVITIES FOR RESOLVE MARINE
Credit: gCaptain
Global maritime responder Resolve Marine has reported a busy period including combating a fire on a vehicle carrier and providing mainstream marine support services. Fire is one of the most feared emergencies seafarers face and if there is anything positive with the conflagration on the vehicle carrier Höegh Xiamen it is that the vessel was alongside in port and not at sea at the time, five firefighters were however injured tacking the blaze. The fire broke out after the 2010-built, 182m long vessel had loaded around 2,400 cars while alongside JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal in Jacksonville Florida. Shore-based firefighters and local firefighting equipped tugs responded to the incident with Resolve mobilising firefighting response packages and salvage teams from its OPA-90 response depots at: Mobile Alabama, Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville Florida, Charleston South Carolina and New Orleans in Louisiana. Resolve was named responder under Höegh Xiamen’s response plan and immediately liaised with the Unified Command/Incident Command Centre providing round-the-clock firefighting operations and implementing precautions to
8 Resolve Marine provided round-the-clock assistance to Hoegh Xiamen
prevent harbour contamination therefore safeguarding the local marine environment. Almost 1,500t of HFO and 122t of diesel oil were removed from the vessel along with an estimated 1,347 damaged and 1,073 undamaged vehicles and at the peak of the response more than 40 personnel were mobilised tackling the blaze. Sadly, it was another case of the operation being a success but the patient dying as the vessel was
declared a constructive total loss and towed to Turkey for recycling. Resolve was in action again when a multi-purpose cargo vessel grounded in the Congo River, West Africa. Tug availability in the area was described by Resolve as ‘always challenging’ but after extensive market canvassing a suitable vessel was procured and the stranded vessel safely refloated. While few salvage companies can survive on emergency response alone, they are often well equipped to offer expertise and assets for less urgent assignments and Resolve also reports its involvement with Buckeye Partners providing marine support for the C2 and C7 offshore dolphin structures replacement project in the Bahamas. Mobilising its RMG 1000 barge equipped with an American 11320 crawler crane, Resolve removed several catwalk sections and dolphin structures above the waterline. Upon removal of the structures the teams re-installed newly fabricated dolphins and refurbished catwalks.

TUGS & TOWING
DIGITISING SHIPPING’S ‘FIRST AND LAST MILE’ Advanced technologies are increasingly standard features with new tugs nowadays but speaking to MJ, David Yeo, group CEO and founder board member of maritime software solutions provider Innovez One looks at the whole supply chain including shipping and port operations concluding: ‘While many aspects of the supply chain have seen real change, the first and last mile within the marine port environment has been largely left behind. This is despite it being a place where the most challenging parts of the voyage takes place.’ Mr Yeo considers that the drive for sustainability with ‘unprecedented scrutiny’ within the supply chain: ‘has acted as a catalyst for innovation, and in conjunction with the natural onset of digitalisation has led to a swathe of new clean technologies and software designed to optimise every aspect of a vessel and its journey.’ He mentions the perceived reality of automated ‘smart ports’ embracing digitisation with for example big data, AI, blockchain and the Internet of Things technologies commenting: ‘But dig deeper, and we soon see that this digitalisation is only reserved for the few major, tier one ports, and even then, is largely focussed on the landbased operations of a port, overlooking the vital processes and activities that happen at sea in terms of towage, pilotage and workboat operations.’ Mr Yeo states that of the 4,900 commercial ports worldwide 80% are not yet using digital technology for even most basic processes but: ‘continuing to rely on manual, legacy solutions such as whiteboards or spreadsheets to manage critical marine services such as towage, pilotage, and launch boats.’ This leads to a range of inefficiencies including optimised resource planning: ‘and it leaves many ports commercially vulnerable and less able to compete in an increasingly digital world.’ Expanding on potential disadvantages faced by ports not using digital technology for basic processes Mr Yeo says: ‘This dynamic reflects the often-messy reality of port operations where there is a blend of high-tech digital and paper-based, manual processes sitting side-by-side. It also causes interoperability issues, where different systems are not talking effectively in real-time to each other, which impedes effective execution.’ Mr Yeo describes the first and last mile of a voyage as a ‘weak link in the global logistics chain’ and considers it ‘of critical concern’ highlighting in particular arranging and deploying pilots along with coordinating sufficient tugs with suitable power for particular environmental situations. Addressing advantages for the towage sector he states: ‘It also highlights the significant missed opportunities, particularly for towage operators, to make substantial savings of their annual fuel costs by reducing the mileage of tugs while saving yearly maintenance costs and personnel cost savings of their towage vessels.’

Credit: Peter Barker
Just how widespread is digitisation within the marine port environment, especially for the ‘first and last mile’ of a ship’s voyage involving service providers including towage operators?
Highlighting potential efficiency, sustainability, profitability and competitiveness advantages of affordable and readily available technology Mr Yeo states: ‘We’ve demonstrated that this is possible, using our marineM solutions around the world. In Tanjung Priok in Indonesia for example, marineM has saved USD155k in annual fuel costs, by reducing mileage by 20%. It has saved USD90k in annual maintenance costs, and USD150k by reducing accidents. The digitalisation of ports should not be for the few, but for the many, and we must strive to create a fair and level playing field within the global ports’ marketplace.’ In Europe, the complexity of coordinating towage services at scale is evident in Rotterdam, (See MJ June 2019) a prime example of Mr Yeo’s ‘first tier’ ports where currently around 30 shiphandling tugs operate. The Harbour Master Management Information System (HaMIS) and the Port Community System (Portbase) are just two of the digital ‘tools’ aimed at smoothing the flow of activity in this busy and complex port where transhipment facilities including via inland waterways are interwoven with the traditional maritime activities common at such ports. Smaller ports may not have the resources Rotterdam enjoys but the importance of digitisation that is now affordable and well established in the wider maritime world is summed up by Mr Yeo who concludes: ‘Not just to the benefit of the smaller ports, which play a crucial role in the global supply chain, but for the future sustainability of the entire shipping and maritime industry.’

EU-BACKED PROJECT AIMS TO PROGRESS WAVE ENERGY
USE CASES The development of the VHTP and associated methodologies will be based on input from three individual technology developers - each of which will contribute data about specific use cases, as well as physical test rigs, representative numerical models of their devices (virtual test rigs) and highfidelity data from their operation in real environmental conditions obtained in past, ongoing and future open-water sea-trials. The first use case, represented by Corpower, will focus on developing a deeper understanding of dynamic sealing failures in hydraulic PTO point absorbers - identified by the EU-funded H2020 WaveBoost project as a critical component in need of attention for this type of WEC. Under the auspices of the VALID project, the company’s existing 1:10 scale

physical test rig for seal testing will be customised and rebuilt to 1:1 scale to substantially improve understanding of scale effects. A second use case, represented by IDOM, will investigate electric generator failure in floating and fixed Oscillating Water Columns and validate how the proposed methodology can assist in the understanding and evaluation of failures in generators and power electronics that operate above nominal power about 20% of the time. Project partner Tecnalia will also provide accelerated test data from its test rig facilities -complemented by historical data collected over the last few years of continuous operation of the Mutriku fixed OWC pilot plant. A third use case, represented by Wavepiston, will investigate a variety of hydraulic pump failures by drawing on experiences gained on extensive testing of the Wavepiston device in dry lab and open-sea conditions at the DanWEC test site at scale 1:4 to 1:2. Wavepiston will also deploy a pilot version of the full scale WEC at PLOCAN, Gran Canaria, followed by more installations in 2021, which will be used to compare test results from the test bench with real sea testing, as well as following the installation of improved VALID components.

The main objective of the three-year VALID project is to develop and validate the new VALID Hybrid Test Platform (VHTP), as well as procedures for accelerated hybrid testing that can be used across the entire wave energy sector, in order to improve the reliability, survivability and performance of the components and subsystems that form Wave Energy Converters (WECs). Ultimately, the project team (which includes Fundación Tecnalia Research & Innovation, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Biscay Marine Energy Platform SA, Aalborg University, Technical University of Delft, Corpower Ocean, Rina Consulting, Idom Consulting, Engineering, Architecture, AVL LIST, Yavin Four Consultants, Wavepiston, Aquatera Sustainability Ireland and consulting engineer Julia F. Chozas) believe the platform will help project developers to tackle scaling challenges, lower project uncertainty and reduce product development costs. As Pierre Ingmarsson, Senior Project Manager at RISE, explains, hybrid testing is ‘an innovative and cost-effective way to evaluate structures, where the full structure is divided into physical and numerical substructures.’ “The basic idea is to numerically represent part of the substructures using well-established mathematical models, while physically testing the rest of the other substructures that may have complicated or unknown mechanical properties. A key advantage of hybrid testing is that it allows users to integrate inputs from laboratories ... in different geographic locations,” he says. According to Ingmarsson, current testing procedures in the wave energy sector are ‘not well-balanced,’ largely because most laboratories focus solely on functional tests relating to aspects such as proof of concept and performance assessment - disregarding ‘other key performance measures such as reliability and survivability.’ “This is where the VALID project comes into play. VALID will integrate both reliability and testing methods, together with relevant data on component failures from ongoing and recently finished projects, early in the design and testing process to ensure that the proposed testing procedure is built upon past experience,” he adds.

In December last year, an international wave energy consortium launched the VALID project, a €5m EU-backed initiative focused on the development of a hybrid testing platform for ocean energy

HARNESSING THE POWER OF THE ATLANTIC A new combined wind and wave generating project that is aimed at harnessing the enormous power potential of the Atlantic Ocean is planned The plan, by Simply Blue Energy, is for installation in the exposed waters on the West Coast of Ireland. The project will utilise innovative and cutting-edge technologies to incorporate both floating offshore wind and wave energy conversion arrays to produce zero-carbon electricity. Simply Blue Energy is developing the Western Star project off the west coast of Co. Clare at a site that is just north of the Shannon Estuary. This will consist of a floating wind farm situated at least 35km offshore and this wind farm is being developed in conjunction with a wave energy conversion array, that will be approximately 4km from the coast. The innovative floating technology proposed for this project will allow the turbines to be located far from shore and in waters over 100m deep where traditional fixed bottom turbine foundations would be uneconomical. This floating wind project will be named Project Ilen and will comprise a number of floating units totalling 1.1gW. The proposed wave energy portion of this co-development project which is being named Project Saoise, will first focus on a two-step phased installation initially with 5mW capacity before building up to a 30mW demonstration array. It will consist of an interconnected array of devices, each generating energy with the rise and fall of the surface of the sea and feeding it back to land via an export cable. Simply Blue Group is working with CorPower Ocean and EIT Innoenergy to develop this Saoirse project. Preliminary front end engineering design and offshore survey activities have been initiated in parallel with continued stakeholder engagement activity. A foreshore site investigation license application was submitted in December last year, the company said.
“Ireland’s development of floating wind sites continues and we are delighted to be introducing wave energy to the energy mix. We believe that the combination of the two technologies will deliver significant system benefits to help economies move to net zero.” said Sam Roch-Perks, MD of the Simply Blue Group.

Tidal and wave energy devices were installed in the UK, the Faroe Islands, Spain, the US and China in 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. This is according to statistics released by Ocean Energy Europe. The company said to install devices and avoid project cancellations during a global pandemic is clear evidence of ocean energy’s resilience to shocks and slowdowns. Ocean Energy Europe’s CEO, Rémi Gruet, said: “Echoing the resilience seen in wind and solar, the ocean energy sector has fared well in difficult times. The path towards 100 MW of ocean energy by 2025 is opening up. As the world begins to get back on its feet, these innovative technologies are a key part of a recovery that is both green and just.”

Ocean energy resilient during COVID-19
8 The ocean energy sector has remained robust throughout the COVID-19 pandemic
There were project investments of over €45m in 2020. Deployments made in 2020 bring global cumulative installations for wave and tidal energy to almost 60MW over
the past decade, said Ocean Energy Europe. A strong pipeline of projects in 2021 means that Europe looks set to maintain its position as a world leader, with 6MW of wave and tidal energy slated for deployment this year. The European tidal sector passed the 60GWh cumulative electricity production milestone in December. This shows that installed projects are producing power steadily and reliably even with reduced access & maintenance possibilities, said Ocean Energy Europe. Supportive policies worldwide mean many European developers are looking at projects outside of the continent and consequently, the installed capacity gap between Europe and the rest of the world continues to narrow.

MARINE RENEWABLES Siemens Gamesa is partnering with sister company Siemens Energy to develop an offshore wind turbine system that will produce hydrogen for transfer ashore rather than sending the conventional electricity ashore via the grid network. The system will work by incorporating two electrolysis modules into the turbine structure that will use the electricity generated by the turbine to separate water into its component parts, hydrogen and oxygen, allowing the hydrogen to be piped ashore as a fuel. The developers claim that such a system would be more efficient as it would remove the significant losses that occur when electricity is sent ashore in the conventional way. It would also remove the problem with curtailment, when more electricity is generated that is required. Siemens Gamesa and Siemens Energy first unveiled their plan to develop offshore green hydrogen production last month and they are planning to invest around €120 million over the next five years in order to integrate electrolysis equipment into a Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine. This will involve a substantial re-design of the transition piece of the turbine structure in order to accommodate the equipment required to convert the electricity into hydrogen.
DIRECT HYDROGEN PRODUCTION FROM TURBINES
As conceived at present the equipment will be constructed in a modular form and will be housed in standard 40-foot containers attached to the transition piece well above the waterline. Two of these containers would house electrolysis equipment capable of

ADRIATIC GREEN ENERGY HUB PROPOSED An application for a permit to develop what is termed ‘a clean energy hub’ in the Adriatic Sea off the port of Ravenna has been submitted writes Dag Pike The consortium comprises offshore contractor Saipem, AGNES and Qint’x, covering what is thought to be the first combination of wind and solar power plus hydrogen production. The partners in this project first signed their Memorandum of Understanding back in August last year and a grid connection with a capacity of 570mW has already been approved by transmission system operator Terna. The project partners expect to start a measurement campaign to assess the wind resources at the two proposed wind farm sites and to begin front end engineering work later this year. Next year the partners will start work on an environmental impact assessment and if they secure authorisation for the project, the final investment decision and the start of work will take place in 2023. This AGNES project will comprise two offshore wind farms which will have a total of 65 turbines established on fixed foundations. These will be established at four and six miles offshore and together they will produce up to 520mW of power. The power from these turbines will be supplemented with a 100mW floating solar panel plant that will use technology that has been developed by Norwegian company Moss Maritime which is part of the Saipem Group. These solar panels are mounted on a flexible frame that is supported on floats with the panels erected in the form of twin slopes in a style that will reduce bird fouling and other contamination that will reduce maintenance. In addition to transmitting electricity to shore, some of the electricity generated by the turbines and floating solar panels will be used to produce hydrogen from seawater
using electrolysis. It is anticipated that the electrolysers will be installed on decommissioned offshore oil and gas platforms in the area and it is estimated that the hydrogen production will amount to 4000 tonnes per year. There will also be 100MWh of energy storage capacity in the form of lithium batteries. The project is expected to benefit the Port of Ravenna where a servicing base and construction sites will be established.

A platform to enable hybridization of ocean based renewable energy production by combining wave, wind and PV is now available for project developers around the world. SINN Power’s Ocean Hybrid Platform (OHP), the world’s first modular, multifunctional maritime structure, is currently equipped with 192 PV modules (72 cells) rated at 390Wp each, provided by project partner Schmid Pekintas (Turkey), and will be complemented with 4 Huracan wind turbines (10kWp each) by LuvSide (Germany) in Q1 2021, followed by 4 SINN Power wave energy converters (WEC) in 2022. Dr.-Ing. Philipp Sinn, CEO and founder, said: “The entire team has done a phenomenal job in the past years and I am
proud that our technologies are now finding their way into the market.” SINN Power’s demonstration project of the OHP was deployed in proximity to Heraklion Port in Greece, where SINN Power operates its R&D facility, in October 2020. The OHP is designed to withstand breaking
waves of up to 6m and offshore waves up to 15m, and the structural integrity of the platform in the maritime environment has been tested at the breakwater wall since 2015. Combining different energy sources and LFP storage solutions is made possible by SINN Power’s ModTroniX (MTX) - the world’s only IP68 rated power electronics for deployment in harsh conditions. The modular design means components of the OHP are easy to ship. All components come pre-fabricated and the on-site installation is limited to plug&play tasks. Additionally, hot-swapping is available for all components, which enables repairs and replacement of components without shutting down the entire OHP.

VESSEL LAUNCHES
FIRST HYBRID SURFACE EFFECT SHIP Could the newly launched CWind Pioneer represent a step change in vessel technologies for offshore wind CTVs? Named the CWind Pioneer to demonstrate its position at the forefront of crew transfer vessel innovation, the vessel was developed in response to an industry-wide push to develop and deploy innovative technologies that reduce CO2 emissions, while cost-effectively servicing windfarms located further offshore. The CWind Pioneer achieves this through a hybrid diesel and battery electric power system which enables the vessel to operate purely on battery power while in harbour or at standby in the windfarm, resulting in a decrease in fuel burn and CO2. With surface effect hull form and heave compensation technology, the CWind Pioneer can operate at speeds exceeding 43.5kts, and can transit and transfer safely in sea states in excess of 1.8m Hs, while minimising motion and acceleration through its air cushion motion control system, resulting in a smoother, more comfortable CTV experience for technicians and crew. The overall design and build, with 24 passenger capacity, pays particular attention to technician and crew health, safety and comfort, delivering the workforce in the best possible work-ready condition, resulting in increased operation days offshore for our client’s O&M and construction activities. At a speed of 43.5kts, the Pioneer is claimed to be over 20% more fuel efficient than conventional CTVs running at 24kts on a mile for mile basis. For a typical windfarm situated 30nmi from port, this translates to a reduction of over 110 tonnes of CO2 per vessel, per year, by using the hybrid SES. This figure excludes the savings of the hybrid system, which will allow the vessel to be zero emission ship infield while technicians are carrying out their work on the turbines. Specific figures will be shared once these savings are proven, but initial desk top studies suggest a 30%-50% saving over conventional vessels. The high transit speed of the vessel also means windfarms previously serviceable only by an expensive SOV, can now be reached by the SES CTV within 60 minutes, giving wind farm

owners and operators more low cost, low carbon options when determining their transfer strategy. The CWind Pioneer will be used at the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore wind farms through a long-term charter contract agreement with Ørsted. Using the CWind Pioneer enables Ørsted to not only deliver and service their windfarms efficiently through reduced transit times, but also supports their ambition of a world that runs entirely on green energy. The Hybrid SES crew transfer vessel was developed in partnership with ESNA, a ship design company based in Kristiansand, Norway. ESNA specialises in low emissions technologies and surface effect ship development, to deliver commercially competitive vessels with significant carbon reductions by design. Trygve H. Espeland, Naval architect and co-founder of ESNA, said: “We are delighted to see the launch of the CWind Pioneer. She is not only a step-change for the offshore wind industry, but also for the SES design, as she is the first SES with 100% electric air cushion systems, which were both fun and challenging to achieve. “As a SES, she is reducing emissions by offering low resistance at high speed, and the air cushion motion damping is allowing offshore operations in same wave heights as larger vessels. By choosing a SES you can, therefore, reduce emissions by simply building a smaller vessel for the same job.” The Hybrid SES propulsion engine delivers sprint speed and extreme bollard push, from its 1,600kW installed diesel engines, which can be battery boosted up to 1,800kW. The vessel was built by Wight Shipyard Company, a leading UK aluminium and high-speed craft vessel builder. CWind is part of the Global Marine Group.

involvement in hydraulic projects as well as maintence and service work. The cost of the new ship was not being revealed until after delivery, Thoma told Maritime Journal, but it is likely to be considerably higher than the €4.2 million paid for a previous SET floating grab which has just entered service with the Magdeburg WSA. The 36m Krabbe II was completed at SET Genthin in 2019 but according to Thoma only entered service after completing function testing in November last year. It has two 294kW Volvo diesels driving Schottel rudder propellers with 360o turning capability. SET said this made it very maneuverable, without the need for a classic rudder system. Krabbe may be smaller but its job is similar in scope to that of Wesergrund. It is designed to help keep the upper reaches of the Elbe clear for shipping to and from the port of Hamburg. Much like Wesergrund, it is much praised and described by waterway officials as a “one off”.

The unique newbuild is expected to enter service in summer after delivery by the inland Elbe River facility. It is an ocean-going grab designed for operations on the the River Weser and its tributaries and canals as well as in the coastal waters of the North Sea. Claudia Thoma, spokeswoman for the German Government’s Waterways and Shipping Administration WSV in Bonn, told Maritime Journal Wesergrund will operate for the WSV’s Weser-Jade-Nordsee local waterways and shipping office (WSA) in Bremen. It will be the first such German ship to be specially built for coastal service, she said. SET is part of the German Heinrich Rönner Group which is involved in the maritime industry and in heavy steel construction. The concern won the Wesergrund contract in 2018 and its MD Olaf Deter said the order reflected the good name SET had made for itself in specialist shipbuilding. The small yard has, in fact, delivered 203 such vessels since German unification in 1990, and turned out many more before that as a GDR shipyard. Since becoming part of Rönner in 2007 its two yards in Tangermünde and nearby Genthin have built 33 specialist ships. The launch of Wesergrund, which carries a crew of two, was a quiet one without public ceremony or visitors, as originally planned. That was because of Covid restrictions which also contributed to the later than expected delivery. The newbuild is 47.05m loa and 10.50m wide with a fixed height of 4.8m. With a steel hull and aluminium superstructures and a working deck it draws just 1.30m extending already impressive coastal capabilities to include operations in shallow flat water regions. The power for Wesergrund’s DC drive and on-board electrical network is provided by three 368kW ScanDiesel generators fitted with scrubber technology and there is also a 38kW port diesel on board. Its two Type 3400HD rudder propellers are from Hydro Armor, each of 323kW @ 735 revs/ min, and are powered by an electrically driven hydraulic pump. In addition the ship has a Pumpjet Type SPJ 57 RD from Schottel with an output of 220kW. Wesergrund’s speed is put at 16km/h when travelling alone and at 13km/h when the ship is in convoy with barges. Wesergrund carries a 50 ton Liebherr Type R 956 V Litronic hydraulic crawler excavator which can be positioned using the ship’s adjustable main propulsion systems, as well as the pumpjet and two hydraulic collapsible anchor stilts to keep it stable during dredging. The WSV noted that waste gas processing equipment is another feature on board the new floating grab. Also to hand are a total seven winches from Kappis Nautic, two of them bow anchors, one in the stern and four mooring winches. The deck house is equipped as a one-man radar operation and height adjustable. Claudia Thoma reported that the newbuild’s scope of work was a wide one covered not only sea and waterway grab and excavation work. It would also include the transport of deck loads, push and along-side towing services for barges and

HYBRID PATROL VESSEL FOR MALTA A new patrol vessel recently launched by Vittoria Shipyard is the largest offshore patrol vessel ever built at the company’s Adria yard The launch ceremony was held in the presence of brigadier Jeffrey Curmi, commander of the Armed Forces of the Mediterranean island. The 48.5-million-euro ship, co-financed by the EU as part of the Internal Security Fund, will be used for surveillance operations, monitoring of the coastline and on the high seas, and search and recovery (SAR). The OPV P71 is a 75-metre-long vessel designed and constructed by the Venetian shipyard that specializes in building ships up to 100 metres in overall length for military, paramilitary, commercial, transportation and work-related use. It is destined to become the flagship of the Armed Forces of Malta and to be used to carry out coastal monitoring operations, extended patrol missions offshore and SAR operations. CO-FINANCED The OPV P71 is the product of a commission worth more than 48.5 million euro, obtained by the Venetian firm through their participation in an international public bid serving the Defence Ministry of the island and co-financed (by 75%) by the EU as part of the 2014-2020 Internal Security Fund (ISF). The fund was established by the EU to implement internal security strategy, cooperation related to law enforcement and management of the external borders of the European countries. The delivery ceremony was attended by Maddalena De Luca, prefect of Rovigo, Omar Barbierato, mayor of Rovigo, Raffaele Cavallo, police commissioner of Rovigo, and some of the highest representatives of the Port Authority of Venice and Chioggia, who witnessed the traditional blessing and “christening” by water of the ship when it entered the Bianco Canal. With a full-load displacement of 1,800 metric tons, an overall length of 74.8 metres, a beam of 13 metres, a draft of 3.8 metres, the OPV P71 is ready to complement a crew of 50 and an additional 20 personnel members. The platform features an integrated bridge system in an elevated position with a 360-degree view and sheltered side passageways for personnel on the main deck and around the bridge.
RIBS FOR SAR The design of the OPV features a stern flight deck without a hangar but with the capacity to refuel a 7-metric ton helicopter, such as the AW139 in the service of the Armed Forces of Malta. The aft end below the flight deck has a launch and recovery control station for a 9.1-metre RIB with additional space for supplies and personnel. There are also doors on the overhead flight deck for the loading/unloading of supplies thanks to a purpose-made davit on the port side of the ship. Another station also intended for a 9.1-metre RIB is located on the starboard side of the platform in the central area of the vessel. Both RIBs are capable of a maximum speed of more than 40 knots for the control of sea traffic and search and rescue operations. The hybrid propulsion system of the P71 is based on two diesel engines, 5,440kW each, that integrate the same number of electric motors, of non-specified power output, two shafts with variable-pitch propellers and as a whole are able to provide a speed of more than 20 knots. The new unit is equipped with a bow and stern thruster as well as active-fin stabilizers to guarantee maximum stability. The vessel has been designed and built under the supervision of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

EASIER ELECTRIFICATION FOR SMALL FERRIES Torqeedo and Poseidon have cooperatively announced a fully electric, steerable thruster system providing up to 65kW Poseidon’s thruster is integrated into Torqeedo’s awardwinning and highly efficient Deep Blue drive. The thruster delivers continuous power of 50kW and peak power of 65kW and can rotate up to 360 degrees. Two drives are a typical configuration for the average 80 to 200-passenger vessel, but up to four may be installed. With service intervals of as long as 25,000 hours and the optimized efficiency of a pulling propeller, the Poseidon thruster integration for Deep Blue will further lower the total cost of ownership for climate-friendly ferries and water taxis. The system is powered by Deep Blue lithium-ion batteries with a battery bank capacity of 80kWh to 1MWh. These highcapacity batteries with technology by BMWi meet IEC 62619 and IEC 62620 requirements, making them suitable for use in inland vessels according to ES-TRIN (European Standard laying down Technical Requirements for Inland Navigation vessels) requirements. A DNV-GL type-approved battery variant is also available for offshore applications. The electro-hydraulic steering system was developed by FS-Schiffstechnik in Duisburg, Germany, an established supplier of electrical and hydraulic systems for commercial shipping for over 25 years. The first project with the new Deep Blue thruster is already well underway. Ostseestaal subsidiary Ampereship is building an ES-TRIN certified solar-electric passenger ferry that will travel between the mainland town of Kamp and the island of Usedom in Northern Germany. The solar-powered 14.65 metre-long ferry can transport up to 20 people and 15 bicycles per trip at a cruising speed of 8km/h, with a max speed of 14km/h. The new ferry is scheduled to start operations in August 2021. “There are many commercial applications that can be electrified very economically. Our focus is to keep the total cost of ownership low by offering a solution on a system level, including design-in, service, maintenance and remote diagnostics. This makes electrification as easy and safe as possible for the shipyard and the fleet operator,” explains Phillip Goethe, director project sales. Torqeedo says that electrification of vessels in inner-city
waterways with Deep Blue can be accomplished very costeffectively because speeds are often limited and the vessels are typically in use for 8-14 hours per day, which leaves plenty of time for overnight charging. That reduces infrastructure and battery bank costs and makes the entire investment even more economically and ecologically beneficial. The new thruster drive option adds unbeatable manoeuvrability to the proven Deep Blue system - a critical advantage for inland and urban waterways. Axel Büchling, manager project sales for Torqeedo, has 24 years of experience in marine electrification and has converted many ferries in Europe to electric drives. “The technology is ready. Up to 200kW propulsive power is enough to operate most inland passenger vessels. The modular system design allows the operator to use the same parts and components in different vessels and all components can be monitored and serviced remotely. That is a big advantage,” Büchling said. Büchling also noted that Torqeedo’s global service network, supported by parent company DEUTZ, can provide optimal support to its customers no matter where they are. To make the transition as easy as possible, Torqeedo also may offer advice regarding current funding opportunities or subsidies, depending on the project. 8 Visit Torqeedo at Seawork 2021 on stand PO143

WHEN IS A RIB NOT A RIB? Commercial RIB Charter are introducing yet another vessel that doesn’t look like a RIB. In fact with a fleet now topping out at thirty four vessels, only twenty six are RIBs in the purest sense. We ask Director Stuart Hedges to explain what’s going on... ‘’The name dilemma is a constant debate but as we have been a key supplier of commercial RIBs to the European market for nearly twenty five years, we are loathe to change it. Our growth has been organic and essentially is driven by happy customers. Whilst there is no doubt that we have a name for our shallow draft expertise built around RIBs, our high levels of repeat business are largely down to our ‘whatever the question is, the answer is yes’ attitude. Customers who have booked our RIBs and been impressed by this attitude, and their flying through whatever audits are thrown at them, have pushed us into providing the catamarans we have been launching in the last few years. Our new dive vessel CRC Sentinel is a perfect example and we would like to thank the clients who have provided us with their guidance and expertise to build up the ‘perfect’ specification for what we acknowledge is a very niche vessel. NEW MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE ComAp has just announced its new monitoring and management software, InteliSCADA, replacing InteliMonitor for monitoring and management of ComAp controllers and accessories. It is PC software with a modern look and feel that has been developed with current web technologies, so the interface and overall user experience are much more intuitive. SCADA systems can be very complicated. They require a lot of programming knowledge and can take a lot of time to master even the basics. InteliSCADA makes this easy. It comes with pre-configured templates for different ComAp devices - users can just add devices/controllers and one-click is needed to get InteliSCADA programmed and started monitoring the site. Users can add different monitoring instruments including start/stop buttons, gauges, alarm lists, and even a video feed from a web-connected camera. Then, InteliSCADA automatically connects the particular instrument to a controller. Going through a long list of all possible options is not needed. InteliSCADA is offered in a three-level licence (Lite, Pro and Pro+) and is due for release in April 2021. Additionally ComAp has introduced a new

MISSION TO CUSTOMIZE Seawork exhibitor Nauplius Workboats BV are renowned Dutch designers and builders, aiming to be ‘the most innovative source for maritime solutions’ Founded in 2006 by Jaap van den Hul-Kuijten, Marine engineer and Gerrit Knol Technical Director Nauplius at Nauplius Workboats, they decided to change the way boats are delivered. They don’t bring ‘standard products’ to clients, but always aim to have an open conversation with the ‘needs and wishes’ as a leading guide. The company customizes and is constantly developing designs to address practical needs. “We are grateful for the developing chances that this offers. Vessels that exceed expectation and therefore lead to new assignments.” says Gerrit Knol, “Always emphasizing the clients’ targets means that, for example we deliver as many as six boats of one design and still they all differ. Customized to fit the needs.” The 3514UV, Camilla Eslea is currently under construction for Inverlussa Marine Services in Groningen, the Netherlands where Nauplius Workboats is based. A 35 metre de-licing vessel fitted with a twin line Thermolicer with extended loop and recovery system. The extended loop will give the Thermolicer a 300 Tonnes per hour throughput capacity. High expectations from low voltage The move towards electric drives and more marine systems now operating at 48VDC has led to an increased requirement for power electronics in that extra voltage range, a marine power systems manufacturer and distributor has said. As the UK’s largest Victron distributor, Energy Solutions has access to a large range of extra low voltage products operating at 48 VDC. These include inverter chargers, solar charge controllers and dc-dc converters; all of which are key components of these systems. Associated control systems also operate at this voltage. Additionally, Energy Solutions offers a range of 48 VDC lithium battery banks. “A good example of one of our systems incorporating Victron 48v components is this new Molabo electric drive. This system provides an excellent alternative to a conventional drive system, utilising the great range from Victron and MG Energy to fulfil all the onboard power needs,” said Energy Solutions. The battery bank provides power to the electric drive which in turn powers the vessel, the battery bank is recharged when underway by the efficient onboard generator

or, when in the marina, by shore power. The 48VDC battery bank is also used to power the onboard AC power requirements through the Victron Quattro inverter/charger as well as providing low voltage DC (12v or 24v) through DC/DC converters. The Victron Cerbo delivers the ability to control and monitor the system via the Victron VRM system on your phone or the onboard screen. As well as Victron’s smart lithium batteries, Energy Solutions offers MG Energy batteries which are a popular option in many marine systems. 8 Energy Systems will be exhibiting at Seawork 2021 on stand PG128.

SEAWORK PREVIEW 2021
WORKFLOAT TO LAUNCH SCAFFFLOAT AT SEAWORK 2021 WorkFloat, a folding work platform that won the Spirit of Innovation Award at Seawork 2019, is planning an impressive presence for this year’s show As well as exhibiting WorkFloat, their folding Cat 5 coded Workboat that tows behind a 4x4 or slides into a shipping container, they have also chosen Seawork to officially launch a new modular pontoon product they have developed called ScaffFloat®. Toby Budd, Founder and Director said: ‘‘Last year we worked with Dehns, a specialist patent firm in Bristol, who have been helping us with what we feel is a strong IP and patent claim for ScaffFloat. Now this process is complete, and we have built and tested a range of prototypes, we are ready to start taking bookings and speak to potential delivery partners’’. ScaffFloat is a set of large, tough, plastic floats (0.6m3 to 1.5m3) that have been specifically designed to integrate with standard scaffolding parts. The system allows the ScaffFloat team to build a range of very versatile structural pontoons and rafts that come as standard with boarded sides, a tough wooden deck, handrails and cleats. The product is well suited to provide temporary flotation for commercial activity on inland, estuary, harbour and nearshore waters. As well as standard flat pontoons that provide access for workers, equipment and plant; the extremely versatile nature of scaffolding allows you to easily build up, or down, from the floating structure. Examples include structures like staging, roofing, lifting a-frames or gantry cranes, moon pools and spud legs. ScaffFloat has been developed to bridge a gap in the pontoon hire market between large metal boxes that connect together (Combifloat, Nato pontoons etc.) and plastic modular pontoons that wobble and flex. Whilst it does not come close to the strength and high deadweights of the metal boxes, it does have significantly more structure and deck load capability than modular plastic pontoons. BUSINESS MODEL The team are following a hire-only business model to help them maintain control over the product’s use. They consider safety and certification as a key selling point and want to ensure that ScaffFloat is built, maintained and used correctly.
As well as standard flat pontoons that provide access for workers, equipment and plant; the extremely versatile nature of scaffolding allows you to easily build up, or down, from the floating structure. Examples include structures like staging, roofing, lifting a-frames or gantry cranes, moon pools and spud legs 50 | MARCH 2021
To do this they have developed a simple and transparent pricing structure based on a price per square metre, per day. This starts at £6 for short term hire, and drops to £1 for longer term hire. As an example, an 8 x 6m pontoon, with a 48m2 deck area, 700mm freeboard, 15ton deadweight, wood deck, handrails, cleats and mooring lines would cost £288 a day on a one week hire, or £48 a day on a twelve-month hire. The ScaffFloat team only need to ship the floats and longitudinal lattice beam to site, with the heavy steel tubes, couplers and deck boards hired locally. The build can take place on a slipway or beach on a single tide, on a riverbank and be slid in the water, or on the quayside and be craned in. A LWB van and flatbed trailer can carry enough floats and lattice beam to build a 16m x 6.5m pontoon barge with a 35 ton deadweight in the UK. Or a 40ft container can carry enough floats, beam, truss, tubes, boards and couplers to provide an overseas build kit for a 20m x 10m drill barge, with moon pool, gantry crane, propulsion, safety equipment, anchors, tender, loading ramps and spud legs. Like WorkFloat, uses for ScaffFloat span several sectors including survey, drilling, geotechnical, renewables, oil & gas, civils, events, disaster relief, access and working at height. As standard, ScaffFloat comes with structural calculations, method statements and importantly a stability book (including a range of common load scenarios - scaffold tower, cherry picker, gantry crane etc). The company is also looking to offer maritime certification as an optional extra where the client is looking for third party validation. As well as delivering projects themselves, the team are also looking for delivery partners who will help install ScaffFloat pontoons. 8 Visit Workfloat at Seawork on vessel berth VA56

models, the Seakeeper 1 uses a new flushmount design that allows it to be installed easily under seats, in a range of control consoles with the unit being bolted directly to the deck or even mounted under the deck. Designed to eliminate up to 95% of boat roll on vessels up to 5.5 tonnes, the Seakeeper 1 runs on 12V DC power drawing 55 amps. The device’s smaller envelope and unique flywheel design allow it to spool up in just 15 minutes. Featuring an integrated top window, the Seakeeper 1 can be controlled from a control pad on top of the unit, or remotely from the helm. It uses a fully hose-less design and self-contained single cylinder active control to facilitate installation and ensure long-term reliability, according to the company. Seakeeper claims that their innovative cooling system allows the gyro to rotate at a very high speed which helps to reduce the size of the unit and because it is vacuum sealed the flywheel weight can be reduced by a half and this also allows a considerable reduction in the power requirements. Since the gyro is actively controlled it can still
operate in the roughest conditions unlike passively controlled units and so it can remain effective in the sort of conditions that might be experienced by workboats. A new dashboard display unit shows the angle of heel that the boat might be experiencing and this can be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the unit. It is anticipated that this new stabiliser will be of considerable benefit to survey craft and to small fishing boats that have to operate in challenging conditions. 8 Visit Seakeeper Inc at Seawork stand PO95

UNDERWATER CONCRETING MASTERCLASS A recent emergency bridge scour repair has shown the range of concreting competencies at the disposal of Welsh marine civil engineers and M&CCE exhibitors Kaymac The Dipping Bridge in Merthyr Mawr is a four span masonry bridge which carries New Inn Road over the River Ignore. Following an underwater inspection it became clear that the east training wall on the downstream side of the structure was subject to severe undercutting, and required an emergency mass concrete repair to prevent collapse. Due to the works being carried out during the fisheries embargo for spawning and migration, the water had to be monitored throughout the duration of the repairs and works had to stop if there was any overburden of suspended silts within the watercourse outside of the silt curtain. If this was the case works could then resume when the river had cleared. Shuttering was lowered into the water and assembled along the length of the undercut. The underpinning works was carried out in four individual lifts due to the height of the repair. The void was measured to ascertain the volume of concrete required for each lift, a tube was positioned within the shutters and the void was filled until the required level reached. The shutter was checked regularly to ensure no leaks appeared during the pour and the concrete vibrated periodically to prevent any air pockets or honeycombing and to ensure that the concrete spread into the entire void. The concrete was allowed to cure and the shutter stripped allowing the silt curtain to be removed on completion. The bridge was then strengthened, protected and declared safe for years of future use. Heavy lift required country’s strongest quay Scottish marine civil engineering consultancy Arch Henderson has been involved in design and project management of the Dales Voe heavy lift quay, the aboveground supports and the decommissioning pad facility for over 8 years. The project culminated in the 14,200 Tonne Ninian Northern Oil Platform being successfully slid ashore to commence decommissioning. Up to 97% of the 47-year-old platform will be recycled. The Ninian Northern Oil Platfrom was installed 100 miles north east of Shetland in 1978 and at its peak produced over 90,000 barrels of oil per day, and ceased production in 2017. The platform was brought to Shetland on the world’s largest construction ship, the Pioneering Spirit. The event generated a great deal of interest from local people who witnessed the arrival of the 378 metre twin hulled ship that dwarfed the

surrounding landscape and the accompanying towing vessels. It was then offloaded onto the Iron Lady, a 200m x 57m floating barge, before then being slid ashore over the Dales Voe South quay into a newly constructed decommissioning facility. Dales Voe’s sheltered deep harbour, together with its close proximity to the oil fields in the North Sea, was considered to be the ideal place to set up a decommissioning base. EROSION CONTROL FOR CHALLENGING HIGH FLOW SCENARIO
An engineered plastic mesh product from M&CCE exhibitor Propex Geosolutions provided a significant cost saving in a project to prevent erosion in a fast flowing river channel. Over 100 years of deposited mine tailings prompted the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to embark on a major initiative to breach the Milltown Reservoir Dam and clean up contaminated sediments. But maintaining the flow of the Blackfoot and Clark Fork Rivers called for a potentially expensive diversion channel. M&CCE exhibitor Foreshore Technology has worked in the dredging industry for over 20 years. In that time the company has worked with quite a few dredge monitoring systems all over the world. The dredge monitoring systems out there can work, but according to Foreshore Technology you often need to spend too much time and effort understanding them. In some cases you need the cost of a full time employee just looking after and managing these systems. What the company really wanted was a system for the dredging operators on board the vessel, simple to learn and use but at the same time powerful and precise. THE SOLUTION Foreshore Technology assembled a team of engineers, all experts in their fields, and created DredgeMaster a dredge monitoring system for the dredging operators with the following requirements: 5 The system should be as precise as possible 5 The software should be simple, you shouldn’t need to be computer savvy in order to use it 5 The operator should be able to play with the settings without ‘breaking’ the configuration 5 It should be easy to add support for new equipment and to add new features if you want them 5 It should be easy to report on the work that’s been done without causing more work for the operator 5 The software should be stable, fast and able to handle anything that is thrown at it

FINALLY, CLARITY FOR COLREGS AT UK SUPREME COURT The incident itself took place in 2015, as the Ever Smart containership was about to emerge from a narrow channel at Jebel Ali and the VLCC Alexandra I, still in the pilot boarding area, was moving slowly towards the channel with the intention of entering. The issue, explained Ince’s Global Head of Admiralty Christian Dwyer, centred on whether Rule 9 (the Narrow Channel Rule) or Rule 15 (the Crossing Rule) applied: generally mariners believed the Crossing Rules - which say the starboard-side vessel maintains course and speed while the other acts to avoid it - have primacy. Therefore some consternation followed the initial ruling that the Narrow Channel Rule governed the encounter. To keep close to the channel’s starboard limit under this Rule was “inconsistent” with the steady course and speed demand for the priority vessel in a crossing situation, according to the Admiralty judge. This generated serious ambiguity, pointed out Dwyer. Additionally, the judge held Rule 15 couldn’t apply because Alexandra I wasn’t on a sufficiently defined course. In short, the VLCC wasn’t obliged to keep out of the way of the boxship. The effect was to “introduce a degree of uncertainty” into COLREGs, underlined Dwyer, highlighting the safety implications. Two points had to be settled at the Supreme Court: firstly, is it necessary for the putative give-way vessel to be on a steady course before the Crossing Rules are engaged? The answer was a clear ‘no’. This finding is important, said Dwyer: to introduce by implication an additional steady course requirement means a vessel in a ‘give-way’ position could be relieved of its greater obligation to keep clear. Secondly, are the Crossing Rules inapplicable if the
outbound vessel is navigating within a narrow channel while the other is approaching entry? Again, the answer was ‘no’ the crossing rules are only overridden if and when the approaching vessel is shaping to enter, adjusting course on its final approach. This case “is far more than a point of law, it’s a judgment with a very practical application”, Dwyer concluded: “It will end up in the textbooks.” 8 Note: Appellants were represented by Ince Gordon Dadds LLP in consultation with Stann Law. Counsel for the Appellants was Simon Rainey QC and Nigel Jacobs QC.

When a large container vessel and a VLCC collided, the bump was felt in more ways than one: this was the first ever collision appeal to come before the UK’s Supreme Court, with significant implications for COLREGs.

Continued growth for marine insurer One global marine insurer has reported continuing growth in its diversified business lines and solid progress in raising premiums to reflect market conditions. North P&I Club said it is expecting to see a small tonnage reduction after a planned de-risking exercise. The attention to risk, revenue and diversification leaves the global marine insurer in robust financial shape, despite Covid-19 challenges and what North Chief Executive Paul Jennings describes as “a very demanding renewal for our P&I mutual business”. Mr Jennings said North had secured premium growth across all its business lines throughout the year, projecting a significant increase over the last 12 months.
58 | MARCH 2021
He noted that the Club was completing its 17th consecutive year of ‘A’ capital rating from S&P Global with AAA capital. Chief underwriting officer, Thya Kathiravel, noted: “The challenges around securing the increase in P&I premiums that we flagged up as necessary in November should not be underestimated. The market remains competitive, with owners understandably very sensitive to costs. We have tried to recognise this in balancing our renewal outcome.” Having approached the renewal with the objective of reducing exposure in certain areas, North’s combined owned and chartered tonnage was reduced slightly but is still projected to be in excess of 245M GT. ORCA ELECTRONIC CHARTS AND MORE Norwegian company Orca has taken a fresh look at electronic charts systems and how they operate writes Dag Pike Orca has developed a new system from scratch that includes many advanced features that they claim are not available with current chart systems. They call it their Marine co-Pilot and whilst it is built around the basic electronic chart system, the designers claim that it offers a great deal more. This includes the ability to be proactive by providing information about unexpected weather forecast changes, insufficient fuel for a planned route, and upcoming navigation challenges such as a heavily trafficked inlet. In addition it logs and analyses past trips and it is claimed that these analytics help the navigator to optimise the engine RPM for improved fuel consumption and to monitor engine temperatures and boat performance over time giving the ability to predict potential machinery problems. As a further development the system is claimed to improve and learn. The co-Pilot’s route-engine recommends routes that other navigators commonly travel and the charts the system is based on will become more accurate as boaters collect depth data and this is included into the charts after careful analysis. The system uses a custom-built chart system that gives worldwide coverage and automatic updating which is based on official chart information. To be effective the Orca system needs access to the internet. The co-Pilot uses its internet connection to download weather forecasts, upload trips for analysis into the cloud, and reviews AIS data to predict busy shipping lanes along an upcoming route. The Orca co-Pilot downloads trip-critical data along proposed routes and for the current
