DECARBONISE WITH FLEXIBLE AND ROBUST SOLAR PANELS

A new photovoltaic (PV) panel technology will allow innovative solar power solutions to be developed for shipping and maritime applications

As part of its ongoing rollout of zero emission power and propulsion solutions for shipping, Eco Marine Power Co., Ltd. has begun to cooperate with F-WAVE Company Limited to jointly develop innovative Ship Integrated Photovoltaic (SIPV) solutions. These solar power solutions will utilise F-WAVE’s shatter-proof and fl exible PV technology combined with EMP’s extensive experience in developing ship-based solar power systems.

F-WAVE’s flexible solar cells use the unique SCAF (SeriesConnection through Apertures formed on Film) structure allowing a wireless connection with the electrodes. This tandem construction also allows the flexible solar cells to absorb a wide solar spectrum. Additionally, the cells demonstrate high performance in hot weather due in part to the annealing effect and their efficiency increases compared to the decrease that typically occurs with crystalline cells.

We look forward to incorporating the patented F-WAVE solar cell technology ‘‘ into the solutions we have developed for shipping & maritime applications

EMP’s Aquarius Marine Solar Power solution is ideally suited to incorporate F-WAVE’s flexible PV panel technology and a customised version will also be fitted to EMP’s patented EnergySail for evaluation at the Onomichi Marine Technology Test Centre (MTTC) in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan.

Commenting on the cooperation with F-WAVE, Greg Atkinson, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Eco Marine Power stated, “We look forward to incorporating the patented F-WAVE solar cell technology into the solutions we have developed for shipping & maritime applications and also exploring new ways of integrating photovoltaics into the design and structure of ships.”

In addition to developing integrated solar solutions for shipping and maritime applications EMP will promote F-WAVE’s products globally so that they can be incorporated into new ship building projects.

Eco Marine Power Co. Ltd. is based in Fukuoka, Japan, and develops renewable energy based fuel saving and emission reduction solutions for ships.

Strategy change for Neander

Engine developer and manufacturer Neander Shark GmbH (Neander) has announced a new business strategy.

Yanmar Marine International (YMI) has been the exclusive global distributor for the Dtorque 111 turbo diesel outboard for 3.5 years, but Neander will now directly distribute the engines to maximise sales growth and develop market opportunities and special projects.

Björn Thomsen, chief executive officer of Neander, said: “This direct approach will enable us to provide a more competitive package, devote more manpower to the specific sectors, strengthen the brand and sales network and place the focus firmly on our customers.”

Under a new three-year deal, which started 1 June, YMI’s global engine distributorship will be replaced by a more direct model, with sales, marketing and after-sales handed back to Neander. YANMAR Italy will continue to operate as production partner of the Dtorque. Yanamr Europe will take responsibility for parts

distribution straight to Neander customers.

The aim is to create a more direct and efficient market approach to transfer the benefits to marine customers with the best price and service. The partnership will allow Neander to move to a more flexible relationship with its engine distribution partners, with its own sales and customer support teams.

Taro Kitamura, president of YMI, said: “YANMAR is very proud of the part we have played in introducing the Dtorque diesel outboard and successfully establishing a solid foundation for the brand using our diesel expertise and long-standing position in the marine industry.”
