The fast patrol vessels built by Italy’s Vittoria Shipyard for the Hellenic Coast Guard are 36 metres long and 7 metres wide with a full-load displacement of 156 metric tons. The ships travel at a maximum speed of 37 knots thanks to a propulsion system comprising two Rolls-Royce Kamewa S71-4 waterjets, and they are able to accommodate a 16-member crew. Notable pieces of equipment that will be installed are two remote-controlled weapon stations and two advanced surveillance and navigation systems. The vessels have been designed and built according to standards set by RINA (Italian Naval Register, a member of the IACS), obtaining the highest class notations.

FLEET’S ROADMAP TO NET ZERO The UK’s largest ship operator servicing the oil and gas industry, has kick started its ambitious fleet decarbonisation plans with an in-depth sustainability study across its 44 offshore infrastructure support vessels. The results will deliver a roadmap to help North Star futureproof its tonnage, enhance operational performance, and meet its net zero 2040 target. The firm has commissioned independent design and engineering consultants, Houlder Ltd, to determine the carbon emission reduction opportunities on its existing fleet and recommend the most effective green innovations for the firm to invest in over the next decade. The engineering design, clean technology and technical consultancy has extensive experience in supporting marine clients to adapt their fleets to improve environmental performance and meet the decarbonisation challenge. As part of the three-stage analysis, Houlder will evaluate North Star’s fleet of emergency response and rescue vehicles, platform supply vessels, as well as its future renewables fleet. The first will establish greenhouse gas emissions and carbon intensity across its existing assets and onshore operations. It will then identify the

most suitable clean technologies to improve each vessel’s efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The final phase will assess all potential energy efficient and low emission propulsion solutions which could be retrofitted to the existing fleet in line with operational requirements, available space, displacement, power demand and endurance requirements. Alternative fuels of the future will also be considered. The assessment and results are due to be completed in Q1 next year. Chris Bell, senior consultant at Houlder said: “There are many proven energy efficiency

8 North Star CEO Matthew Gordon

adaptations and technologies that can be deployed today to support the transition to net-zero emissions operations. There is no single best solution to the decarbonisation challenge. What’s important is to determine how they can best be packaged together for greatest effect. This study not only determines the viable technology options for the North Star fleet, but also highlights specific ships to target and prioritise. This approach turns a tough challenge into an achievable and actionable process.”

TERMINAL OPERATOR BERA REBRANDS FOLLOWING EFG INTEGRATION Port terminal operator BERA has been rebranded to EFG Port Papenburg following its complete integration into the EMS-Fehn-Group. The company, primarily known for its storage and handling facilities, will now offer additional services in response to an increase in demand for logistics services. “We offer our customers all services from one single source,” said EMS-Fehn-Group’s chief executive, Manfred Müller. “Precisely because we have our own terminals, vessels, cranes and trucks and the

expertise that comes along with operating them, we are able to quickly supply tailor-made solutions,” he added. The multimodal EFG Port Papenburg terminal plays an important role as interface between sea and land transports. With an area of around 160,000 square metres, about a third of which is warehouses, the port is able to handle peat, wood, steel and alternative fuels using its berth which allows the simultaneous mooring of two seagoing vessels. “We constantly invest in order to always stay up-to-date,” said

managing director, Holger Wedemann. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, demand for services has remained high. “We are in a perfect position to win new customers and to draw further port handling activities to Papenburg,” said Holger Wedemann. One example of this new closer cooperation is Lübeckbased EFG Heavy Haulage’s recent move alongside colleagues in Papenburg. “This will enable us to react even faster and more flexibly to our clients’ requirements,” said Holger Wedemann.

CABLE LAYER BREAKS RECORDS AT MIDDLESBROUGH A new visitor broke records for the region’s offshore wind industry when it recently sailed into the UK’s Port of Middlesbrough The 171-metre ship set a new record as the largest offshore wind vessel ever to pass under Middlesbrough’s famous Transporter Bridge when it completed its recent voyage to AV Dawson’s Port of Middlesbrough. Built this year, by Prysmian Group, world leaders in the manufacture and installation of subsea cable, the Leonardo da Vinci is actually a record breaker herself. The ship is the most advanced cable-laying vessel in the world. It has the highest cable carrying capacity in the market and a very large bollard pull to allow for ploughing in very challenging seabed conditions. It can also operate for extended periods in challenging weather and work to the deepest depths. Peter Watson, Prysmian’s installation manager said: “The vessel allows us to offer an ever wider and more versatile range of installation services and strengthen our leadership position in this highly competitive sector.”

The Leonardo da Vinci will be a key enabler of a carbon-neutral world by 2050. We are delivering most of the biggest projects in the world and the Leonardo da Vinci has a critical role to play in ensuring that our market share grows in the future

‘‘

The state-of-the-art vessel’s first project was on the Viking Link project where she mobilised at Port of Middlesbrough. The ship will be making regular visits to North East England

as Prysmian operates its Northern European marine base from Port of Middlesbrough. Mr Watson said: “The Leonardo da Vinci will be a key enabler of a carbon-neutral world by 2050. We are delivering most of the biggest projects in the world and the Leonardo da Vinci has a critical role to play in ensuring that our market share grows in the future.” Gary Dawson, AV Dawson’s managing director said: “It was an amazing sight to watch the Leonardo da Vinci coming into berth at Port of Middlesbrough. It’s all been very top secret so we’ve not been allowed to talk about it until today, but now we really do want to tell the world as it just illustrates how Teesside and the River Tees is evolving to embrace and lead the way in exciting new industries such as offshore wind.”

First of class 14m lifeboat Diverse Marine have signed a new vessel construction agreement for a first of class 14m ‘Medina Class’ lifeboat for a UK volunteer lifeboat service. After a competitive international tender process using a design from Walker Marine Design, the construction of the vessel (for Caister Volunteer Lifeboat Service) at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, UK completes the evolutionary process that saw the original Medina Class Lifeboat built very close to the current build location over 35 years ago before the design was adopted by the Dutch who built Caister’s current Lifeboat, Bernard Matthews II 17 years ago. The 14m self-righting Lifeboat features an aluminium hull, deck and coach roof

together with a resiliently mounted GRP wheelhouse to reduce noise and vibration for the crew. The fully air-conditioned

wheelhouse layout has been designed for up to six crew, all with designated AllSalt Maritime SHOXS 2000 seats. Configuration is for a central helm station forward, nav station aft to starboard and an additional dedicated space for stretcher and casualties. Twin Scania DI13-077M main propulsion engines drive twin Hamilton HJ364 water jet units for speeds in excess of 35 knots. Twin helm stations will feature Hamilton Jet’s AVX control system and Jet-Anchor functionality for station keeping. A comprehensive navigation and communications suite will be supplied by Boat Electrics and Electronics Ltd. The vessel has commenced build and will be delivered in 2022.

PORTSTRATEGY INSIGHT FOR PORT EXECUTIVES

PROFILE

JOOST MATHÔT Damen

As Director of Product’s for Damen’s Workboats Division, Joost is playing a key role in driving the Netherlands-headquartered shipyard group into a sustainable future. But is it the job of the shipyard or the customers to set the decarbonisation agenda: “It’s a shared responsibility”, Joost offers, “We have some customers literally banging down our doors to ask us how we’re going to take our next steps, but there are other customers who are simply not aware of the things that are coming, and don’t have the demand for it”. While the perception in some circles of running low emission or even zero emission workboats might be that crews will need to massively alter operational methods, Damen’s all electric ‘Sparky’ tug for Ports of Aukland, that has recently completed successful its seatrials is already suggesting otherwise: “The crew were really surprised by the different atmosphere and experience onboard; the pleasing quiet of not having two diesel engines chugging away down below. But the vessel was specifically designed for the operations in New Zealand, and they can do

the typical jobs throughout the day with charging in between. One of the unique aspects of this product is that the time for a full battery charge is just 2 hours. But Joost makes no secret of the fact that Aukland’s usage case lent itself well to the full electrification scenario, and not all ports will have that same luxury. “I believe that in the future we will be delivering more electric tugs but in the mix of a whole harbour, it’s going to be a mix of fully electric, and some diesel. Some tugs have an emergency response role too, and will continue to need their full bollard pull for extended periods, such as to keep a vessel off the cliffs”. The routemap towards decarbonisation starts with the technologies we have today though:“Diesel is not going to go away as quickly as some would like, and to that end we have developed our own aftertreatment system compliant with IMO Tier III regulations. We felt that the engine manufacturers were not paying the marine environment enough attention. All our next generation of tugs are designed to have this system as an option,

either as newbuild or on a retrofit basis. We can also supply it to third party companies.” As Damen moves up the scale towards full zero emissions, which it can offer right now for low range/ low speed applications- the electric technologies they are investing in are modular and scaleable: “We’ve set up the architecture of our electrification systems, including how we perform the power management so it works well across multiple vessel types. For example, elements of the electric tug technology have been equally successful in five electric ferries we are delivering for Copenhagen and a large concession of nine ferries for Rotterdam.” For cleaner, longer range, higher speed scenarios Damen is looking at methanol followed by hydrogen, but developments elsewhere in the industry are dictating the progress: “The engine manufacturers are just starting now to come up with their timelines for when they can have marinized production ready for these technologies.” Listen to the full interview at: https://anchor. fm/lauren-rawding/embed

PIONEERING ANCHOR COMPLETES ON-LAND TRIALS A new marine anchor solution has successfully completed on-land trials validating the technology and sealing approval for full-scale production and ocean deployment The UMACK (Universal Mooring, Anchor & Connectivity Kit) Project has developed a unique mooring and anchoring solution in a bid to supersede traditional ‘gravity-based’ and tubular monopile anchors – reducing CAPEX, installation and O&M (Operational & Maintenance) costs by more than 50%. After undergoing rigorous field trials in northern Portugal, the novel technology is now rapidly advancing through fullscale production ahead of ocean deployment. The UMACK system will be integrated with wave energy developer, CorPower Ocean’s first commercial-scale WEC (Wave Energy Converter), as a key part of the overall flagship HiWave-5 Ocean Demonstration Project.

The UMACK system provides us with a series of unique benefits, including quickconnection and full-surface operation, removing the need for dive support

‘‘

This recent field trial build upon previous successful stages of the anchor test programme at the world-class scaled anchor centrifuge testing facility at University of Dundee (UoD), and on-land testing at the world-renowned Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy System (IWES) in cooperation with the Test Centre for Support Structures (TTH) of the Leibniz University of Hannover. CorPower Portugal Country Manager Miguel Silva said the HiWave-5 ocean deployment project is now gathering pace, with teams being mobilised on the ground in northern Portugal. “The initial anchor lay is pivotal, providing a solid foundation

for our wave energy converter to operate in extreme Atlantic conditions,” said Miguel. “The UMACK system provides us with a series of unique benefits, including quick-connection and full-surface operation, removing the need for dive support. This not only streamlines marine operations for the installation process but also the retrieval of our WECs for maintenance, helping maximise operational windows.” The UMACK Project is led by a European consortium including geotechnical specialist Ternan Energy, wave and tidal energy developers CorPower Ocean and Sustainable Marine, mooring experts TTI Marine Renewables, EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre) and marine renewable energy modelling experts from the University of Edinburgh. UMACK is funded by Scottish Enterprise and the Swedish Energy Agency with co-funding from the OCEANERA-NET COFUND (via the European Commission under Horizon 2020).

Thames jetty renewal awarded Belgian construction major Herbosch-Kiere NV and its British subsidiary Herbosch-Kiere Ltd have recently been awarded a contract for the renewal of Thunderer Jetty on the Thames in Dagenham (near London, UK). The jetty is owned by the international organisation Stolthaven Terminals, which is making significant investments in modernization of the jetty and the terminal. The project will start in January 2022 and will take over a year and a half to complete. Thunderer Jetty was originally built in the early 1900s and is operated today by Stolthaven Terminals. Smaller refurbishments were previously undertaken to adapt the jetty to the changing needs of shipping, but this time a thorough and complete renewal

has been chosen. New mooring structures, scaffolding platforms and access bridges are being built, along with the installation of new pipe-racks, piping and electromechanical equipment. The works have to be carried out in various complex phases as the terminal

must remain operational throughout the project. To bring the project to a successful conclusion, Herbosch-Kiere will call on its own extensive fleet of vessels and equipment and the expertise of its staff. In recent years, Herbosch-Kiere NV has successfully constructed several similar jetties within the port of Antwerp, and the experience they have gained there, will now be applied in the United Kingdom. Bas Verheul, Stolthaven Terminals said: “Upgrading our historic jetty is a significant milestone for Stolthaven Dagenham. After significant modernizations and expansion onshore, this is a crucial next step to making Stolthaven Dagenham the most respected terminal in the UK.

Life extension for ageing offshore assets

HEAVY LOAD-OUT FOR KINCARDINE Heavy lifting specialist company Mammoet has completed load-out of five floating wind platforms for the Kincardine Offshore Wind Farm. Mammoet completed the load-outs at the Navantia Fene Shipyard in Spain. Having previously delivered similar load-out operations at the Navantia Fene Shipyard, Mammoet had existing knowledge of the quay and was awarded the contract for the load-outs of the five floating foundations. The offshore floating market is currently experiencing large growth, and the success of these five operations demonstrates how Mammoet can support this growth. Considering platforms weights, the surface conditions on the quay were of paramount importance. To minimize operational risk, Mammoet prepared the quay by installing hundreds of steel plates to level the surface in places where it had previously been uneven. Furthermore, coordinating with various stakeholder groups flexibly was also required to execute each operation on schedule. This included

organizing each operation to meet the appropriate tide levels and weather conditions and marrying these with the availability of the specialist seagoing vessel contractor and Navantia Fene Shipyard. Once the quay was prepared and the specialist seagoing vessel docked, Mammoet had only a short window in which it could execute each operation. Mobilizing 100 axle lines of SPMTs split between the three columns of the triangular footprint, the floating foundation was loaded onto the three sets of SPMTs, transferred 100m across the quay, and transversely loaded onto the vessel using 54m of RoRo ramps. Once unloaded and stabilized using

sea-fastening equipment, the load-out was complete. Mammoet successfully completed this operation five times over several months. “Having worked at this quay before doing similar complex operations, it was the key factor to deliver the floating wind platforms successfully on time”, explained Mammoet Spain Sales Manager, Javier De Pablo Arenzana. He continued: “In addition to our pool of resources and equipment, this meant we were able to offer our client a high degree of flexibility in terms of the project schedule.” “We believe these capabilities make us well-suited to supporting the growth of the offshore floating sector,” he concluded.

ABS has further developed its approach to aging offshore assets with publication of the Guide for Life Extension of Floating Production Installations. The guidance supports operators looking to extend the operational life of a floating production installation (FPI) by outlining clear Class requirements with a focus on safety. It is informed by lessons learned from ABS-supported life extension projects and the findings of a series of FPI life extension joint development projects. Critical issues addressed include pre-life extension data collection, hull corrosion rate, mooring fatigue assessment, rapid corrosion areas, wire rope, tendon, and composite repairs. The Guide is applicable to existing FPIs of all hull forms, including Ship-Type, Column Stabilized, and Tension Leg Platforms.

8 Life Extension of Floating Production Installations

The Guide is the latest ABS initiative to support the industry with aging assets after bringing together leading companies in the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) sector in August 2021 to address the safety challenges produced by a fleet where more than half of the ship type vessels are over 30-years-old and a quarter are over 40-years-old. The Guide for Life Extension of Floating Production Installations is available for download here.

WORKS IN PROGRESS

SOLENT GATEWAY EYES RENEWABLES OPPORTUNITIES Solent Gateway in the UK is marketing itself squarely at the renewables sector with its designated Freeport status complemented by sea, road and rail access The Sector Deal between the offshore wind industry and the UK Government in 2019 created certainty – unmatched by other European governments – that the UK will remain the anchor market for offshore wind. In the Solent region, this has created the potential for businesses to increase their involvement in key services such as designing, building and operating offshore wind farms, as well as manufacturing blades, turbine towers and cables. The region is proving to be well-positioned to support the growth in exports and, since the Sector Deal was made, the government has developed regional offshore wind clusters, which includes Solent, and has the ambition to increase the industry’s productivity, competitiveness and innovation while helping to grow the coastal economy. MARCHWOOD Part of this growth includes Solent Gateway’s 225-acre Marchwood Port on the south coast of England, which offers a convenient and versatile strategic base for commercial stakeholders in the renewables supply chain. Solent Gateway already has a successful track record in the sector, handling wind blades that have been shipped to the port from Vestas on the Isle of Wight, where the company manufactures the largest offshore wind turbine blades in the world for the record-breaking V164-8.0 MW turbine.

When the Freeport tax and customs site status is confirmed, it will be cheaper and easier for many raw materials to enter the UK for use in manufacturing within the Freeport. Teamed with simplified planning rules, this can help us quickly build or adapt our premises where needed

We are fortunate to be one of the very first Freeport tax and customs sites with new space available for business, so it’s a unique and cost-effective opportunity. “Being both a customs and tax site with over 64 hectares at our disposal, it’s likely that the businesses that will benefit most from using a site like Solent Gateway, under the Freeport status, would be those which want to develop new facilities and operations. This would see them benefiting from incentives to attract new business: importing goods and components to the UK; storing goods for as long as they want without facing customs duties after 90 days; and manufacturing or assembling products, as import duties are paid on final product or component parts when they leave the Freeport, whichever is cheaper. Any organisation that wants to import, manufacture and export within a customs site will avoid all duties. Any business that wants to store items for more than 90 days may also benefit.”

Richard Parkinson, port director at Solent Gateway said: “The facilities we have at the port for handling abnormal loads, together with our experienced operations team, means we have the flexibility and capability to handle complex bespoke project lifts. We are seeing more businesses take advantage of us having the capability to move large parts safely from the quayside to a suitable holding area before being transported throughout the UK or transhipped onto other ocean-going vessels. “When the Freeport tax and customs site status is confirmed, it will be cheaper and easier for many raw materials to enter the UK for use in manufacturing within the Freeport. Teamed with simplified planning rules, this can help us quickly build or adapt our premises where needed.

CAPACITY AVAILABLE Marchwood Port started life as an MoD cargo port in 1943 and was only partially developed. There is much opportunity to use the capacity available and until now there has never been access to commercial business. The added bonus of being a former MoD site is the high level of security for the cargo. The dedicated rail line is a relatively unusual offering, which allows loads to go straight from vessel to rail and move goods across the UK through the national rail network whilst reducing the traffic on the roads. In the current climate, it is also proving popular in alleviating some of the stress associated with the current HGV driver shortages. The rail connectivity takes freight to the main line at Totton and from there north into the UK’s industrial heartland.

HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY

UNMANNED HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY OPERATIONS Amsterdam-based survey company Deep BV will upgrade one of its survey vessels with a Sea Machines SM300 autonomous control system The Sea Machines system enables remote command of the vessel, including navigation and positioning, the control of on-board auxiliaries and sensors, and ship-to-shore data flow. The vessel, operating in multiple areas of the Wadden Sea, will be commanded by personnel in the Amsterdam office. The SM300 autonomy system offers a new world of operational productivity and capability, bringing 21st century task optimization to the marine sectors. Sea Machines reduces and eliminates a number of inefficiencies that have too long been accepted as standard. The technology enhances the value of vessel operations by shifting fullmission vessel control effort from manual to autonomy system, thus enabling personnel to focus less on recurring and repetitive tasks, and more on value advantages. This Sea Machines system can be installed on new or existing vessels, allowing a fleet manager to leverage stateof-the-art technology without requiring the added expense and time consumed by purchasing a new vessel. With the SM300, surveyors can remotely monitor and command multiple autonomous vessels from a shipboard or shore-based centre located anywhere with network connectivity. This remote capability increases operational health and safety by reducing or removing high-risk activities generally associated with crew working aboard small survey craft in dynamic marine environments. By breaking the 1:1 crew-to-vessel relationship, companies can better utilize their technical experts across multiple concurrent projects. Deep will initially deploy the Sea Machines-enabled vessel for a mission to survey the Wadden Sea, a challenging shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands located north of The Netherlands. With no surveyors on board the

vessel for this project, Deep operators will command and control the autonomous vessel and all on-board payloads (including survey sonars, hydrophones, winches, cranes and davits) from its shoreside Survey Control Room, which has been equipped to facilitate several multi-beam surveys simultaneously. Deep will then transfer all collected data from the vessel to the control room via 4G and satellite connection. The combination of Sea Machines’ technology and the Survey Control Room will enable Deep to transition from minimally manned missions to unmanned missions in the near future.

TUGS & TOWING

TUG DELIVERY AND ORDER ROUND-UP This month’s review includes five vessel deliveries and one order all with European connections and reflecting the popularity of standard designs from established shipyards specialising in tugs and workboats A regular feature in Neptune Marine’s news is its EuroCarrier multi-purpose workboat series and UK-based Sustainable Marine recently took delivery of Tidal Pioneer a EuroCarrier 2611 design for operation in the Canadian renewable energy market. The 26m long, Tier III compliant vessel develops 34.7tbp from twin Caterpillar main engines and features Heila deck cranes forward and aft, anchor-handling, towing and tugger winches and a powerful four-point mooring system for operation in currents of seven knots. Tidal Pioneer is classed by Bureau Veritas and flies the Canadian flag. When Perth, Western Australia-based Engage Marine was awarded the towage contract at Abbot Point under a licence awarded by North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation, the towage provider turned to Damen Shipyards Group for three newbuild tugs for the operation and recently, Damen’s Song Cam Vietnam shipyard delivered the ASD tugs Engage Raider, Engage Rogue and Engage Rebel to Engage Marine. The trio, yard numbers 512568, 512569 and 512570 respectively are examples of Damen’s ‘next generation’ ASD Tug 3212. The ASD Tug 3212 has evolved over time since yard numbers 512501 and 512502 Baladha and Bulgu were delivered by Song Cam in 2012, also to Australian principles. The latest iteration retains a slender waterline with a relatively low wheelhouse, slope frames and bilge keels which Damen states provide good seakeeping characteristics guaranteeing low accelerations delivering improved crew comfort and better stability. Typical specifications include length 32.7m, beam 12.82m and maximum draught 5.9m. Twin Caterpillar main engines drive Kongsberg US255 azimuth thrusters delivering a bollard pull of 83t ahead and 78t astern and speed 13.5kn. Damen has welcomed a returning customer in Ports of Jersey Ltd who has taken delivery of the Shoalbuster 2711 Duchess. The Shoalbuster is arguably Damen’s most successful recent series of tugs, available in various versions and this example follows the slightly smaller Shoalbuster 2709 Duke of Normandy delivered to Ports of Jersey in 2005. The extra stability from additional two metres beam keeps it in compliance with MLC regulations and easier to operate for clients working under the UK Workboat Code. With a bollard pull of 43t, a large deck crane and extra space on and below decks Duchess is well suited for a range of operations including marine construction, anchor-handling, dredge assistance and surveys with windfarm operations in UK and French waters and up into the North Sea among its list of capabilities. Canadian naval architect Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) is wellestablished as a prolific designer of tugs and has introduced a new variant to its portfolio with delivery of the RAstar 2800CL escort tugs Svitzer Suez 1 and Svitzer Suez 2 both built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard and ordered for operation in the Suez Canal, the second of the duo recently arriving in the Suez canal region following its delivery voyage. Svitzer Suez 1 and 2 may be the first examples of the new design but a sign of the confidence the market has in RAL tugs is evident with a further nine tugs to this marque already on

order with Cheoy Lee. The design started with a blank sheet of paper with the aim of having the flexibility to allow for various propulsion options, Tier III solutions, deck machinery choices and accommodation layouts, all allowing Cheoy Lee to accommodate clients’ requirements even late in the construction process. The RAstar 2800CL complies with IMO escort stability criteria up to speeds of 10kn and exceeds many flag and/or owner safety requirements including 45’ stair angles throughout. Svitzer’s 28m long LR-classed, fifi1-equipped example is powered by a Caterpillar/Kongsberg main engine/ thruster combination providing 82tbp with MacGregor providing escort and towing winches forward and aft. Finally, an order announcement MJ will doubtless return to sees Sicily-based Rimorchiatori Augusta SrL placing an order for two Bogacay-class (RAmparts 2400X) design tugs with Sanmar Shipyards. The 60tbp pair include upgraded propulsion systems making them Tier III compliant and powered by 1,901kW Caterpillar 3512E main engines and Kongsberg US205 thrusters. The vessels carry the building names Bogacay LII and LIV and are due to be delivered to Augusta Port in Sicily towards the end of 2022.

METHANOL FUEL CELL AND BIOFUEL TUGS FOR SVITZER Svitzer Towage has announced what it states will be the world’s first methanol fuel cell tug and conversion of its London and Medway fleet to burn carbon neutral marine biofuel

Along with its shipping giant parent company A.P. Moller Maersk, Svitzer has signed an agreement with naval architect Robert Allan Ltd to design the world’s first fuel cell tug for harbour operations, running on green methanol The involvement of Maersk is reflective of the trend in shipping in general, including with container ships towards carbon neutral operations and Svitzer points out that fuel cells will be applicable as main propulsion power for tugs earlier than for larger vessels with build times for the former significantly less than for say a container vessel. Ingrid Uppelschoten Snelderwaard, Svitzer global COO describes Maersk’s “decarbonisation journey” stating: “The objective is to extract and apply knowledge and operational experience of methanol feasibility from the near shore small scale tug onto larger ocean-going container vessels.” The 80tbp newbuild escort tug will include a hybrid electrical propulsion system with fuel cells delivering a specific bollard pull using fuel cells alone with batteries providing additional power for the short but often frequent peaks that characterise towage. A feature is where the fuel cells will charge the batteries when the tug is berthed reducing the need for shoreside charging facilities. The tug will be a pilot design for future Svitzer newbuilds and its operation in Svitzer’s European region is planned by Q1 2024. Svitzer has also announced that following a successful pilot, it is to convert its fleet of 10 shiphandling tugs operating in London and the Medway to be powered by marine biofuel.

Reporting on the towing industry’s drive to create a cleaner image for what is by nature an activity demanding high power requirements relative to the size of the vessel is becoming a regular item in the Tugs & Towing column. A range of incentives exist to entice tug owners to develop environmentally friendly operations including: greater efficiencies; local and national regulatory pressure; demand from their ship owning clients and creating a cleaner image in the eyes of local communities who often live and work alongside these vital service providers. Along with its shipping giant parent company A.P. Moller Maersk, Svitzer has signed an agreement with naval architect Robert Allan Ltd to design the world’s first fuel cell tug for harbour operations, running on green methanol. The project involves close cooperation between Svitzer and Maersk to jointly explore the combination of methanol fuel cells, batteries, storage/handling systems, electric drives and propulsion units as a carbon neutral alternative to conventional fossil-fueled arrangements.

The company now offers a new towage solution to customers named Ecotow which it states will unlock about 90% CO2 reduction in Scope 3 emissions from its towage operations and provide the opportunity for global customers to facilitate fossil-fuelled towage elsewhere by calculating the emissions impact of towage operations for Ecotow customers and matching this impact with a volume of biofuel to be delivered to the London-based fleet. Operational viability was confirmed by five tugs (initially on Svitzer Intrepid) running on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel and serving the Isle of Grain LNG terminal on the Medway with all 10 Svitzer tugs in London running on HVO by January 2022. Lise Demant, Svitzer Europe MD states the use of HVO is: “A crucial first step in the roadmap towards a carbon neutral towage sector; a requirement increasingly being driven by customers’ demands.” Built as the Innovation Damen’s first RSD 2513 (Reversed Stern Drive) tug is no stranger to MJ’s readership, your correspondent experiencing a day in the life of the 75tbp tug in Rotterdam in 2019 (see MJ June 2019). The final piece of news from Svitzer reports that Innovation has now become part of its Immingham-based operation following the end of a chartering agreement with Damen Marine Services and now bears the name Svitzer Eleanor. The naming theme follows that of other Svitzer tugs at Immingham, Svitzer Josephine, Svitzer Kathleen and Svitzer Laura; suffixes that have long historical connection with the region dating back to the days of Humber Tugs. It is named after Eleanor Wright, daughter of training master Sam Wright who has worked on board the tug since first chartered from Damen. Since first introduced in 2018, the RSD 2513 has been well received within the industry with around 30 examples listed as either delivered or allocated building slots in Damen’s various shipyards globally.

BOSKALIS SELLS KST AND MAJU MARITIME In another step in its divesting of harbour towage activities Boskalis has signed an agreement for the sale of its towage interests in Singapore and Malaysia to Rimorchiatori Mediterranei S.p.A. The agreement is in conjunction with co-shareholder KS Investments Pte Ltd (Keppel) and involves Keppel Smit Towage Private Limited (KST) and Maju Maritime Pte Ltd (Maju). Under the terms of the agreement, Boskalis expects to receive approximately EUR 80 million in cash for its 49% equity stake. The contribution of KST/Maju to Boskalis’ net profit over the last two years was EUR 4 million per-annum. KST has been a major player in the Southeast Asia harbour towing scene since establishment in 1991 following the joint venture between Keppel and Smit, a wholly owned subsidiary of Boskalis. During this period KST has operated a combined fleet of 58 tugs in Singapore and through its joint venture in Malaysia. In 2019 Boskalis took the strategic decision to pull out of harbour towage divesting its stake in both Saam Smit Towage and Kotug Smit Towage in 2019. One such operation is its terminal towage company Smit Lamnalco established after Boskalis bought Smit International to bring the terminal support operations under a single brand. Boskalis recently announced it was reviewing its position as 50% stakeholder in Smit Lamnalco along with the remaining shareholder The Rezayat Group. Rimorchiatori Mediterranei is a subsidiary of Genoa-based Rimorchiatori Riuniti Group. Established in 1922 the new operator has a fleet of over 100 modern vessels in more than 20 major ports and employs approximately 900 personnel.

The agreement is subject to regulatory approval with the transaction expected to close in the first half of 2022. These changes do not mean that Boskalis no longer has a presence in the world of towing. It is heavily involved in the offshore energy sector including offshore windfarms and can call on a fleet of sixteen modern anchor-handling tugs with bollard pulls between 70t and 205t including the 180tbp AHTs Princess and Sovereign, built in 2002 and 2003 respectively by Yantai Raffles for JP Knight Lowestoft specifically for charter as ETVs to the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency. Its fleet also includes the 205tbp ocean towing tugs Boka Alpine, Boka Expedition, Boka Glacier, Boka Sherpa and Boka Summit built between 2005 and 2007 by Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair.

New president for International Salvage Union The Annual General Meeting of the International Salvage Union (ISU) has appointed Captain Nicholas Sloane as its new president with James Herbert selected as next secretary general. Captain Sloane, a director of international salvage service provider Resolve Marine has taken over as ISU president from Richard Janssen who continues as an ISU executive committee member. Mr Janssen reflected that most of his presidency was during the covid pandemic where ISU rose to the challenge acting as the global voice of the industry including “working on the important issues facing – if not threatening – our sector.” Captain Sloane, a well-known figure in the salvage industry hails from South Africa and is a Fellow of the Nautical Institute and International Institute of Marine Surveyors. He has a commendable track record in the salvage world after starting his sea career in 1980 in many roles, primarily salvage and towage, rising to become master of the

South African super-tugs John Ross and Wolraad Woltemade and then salvage master. His involvement in casualties and wrecks include all classes of ships and oil rigs but probably his most notable, and highest profile reference was leading the team that raised the cruise ship Costa Concordia from the Italian island of Giglio between 2012 and 2014. At the same meeting John Witte, president and CEO of New Jersey USA-based Donjon Marine was elected ISU SU vice president; Mr Witte is a past-president dent of both the American Salvage Association ssociation and ISU. The final appointment ment will see James Herbert succeed ISU U general secretary Roger Evans who retires ires at the end of Q1 2022. After a career as a British army officer Mr Herbert trained ass a BBC journalist later joining Shell and rising ng to head of group media relations, including uding handling tanker incidents. After a period iod as a senior civil is own communications servant, he formed his

consultancy including crisis communications services to shipowners working with coastal states authorities including the MCA and USCG. Mr Herbert has transformed the way in which the ISU presents itself, in particular providing a more open approach to communicating with mainstream media, particularly at times of reporting on casualties where a lack of specialist in-house knowledge of marine salvage can lead inadvertently to mis-reporting. He will combine the secretary general and corporate communications role. 8 ISU President Nick Sloane

KOTUG AND SHIFT TO DEVELOP E-PUSHER BATTERIES Kotug International and Shift Clean Energy have formed a partnership to use Shift’s new PwrSwäp swappable batteries on Kotug’s E-Pusher tugs.

8 Kotug will use Shift’s swappable batteries

In 2021 Kotug established an inland shipping division featuring modular and scalable electric powered pusher tugs and smart AI-driven dispatch and route planning applications for the inland waterways transportation industry. The tugs are powered by swappable energy containers deployed on a pay-as-you-go basis. The signing of the MoU between Kotug and Vancouver BCbased Shift coincided with COP26 in Glasgow, the partners stating the combined services will support the maritime industry in reducing greenhouse gas emissions today, without requiring any upfront capital costs and at competitive rates. Shift states its pay-as-you-go service is “a first of its kind” avoiding capital expenditure and providing the batteries when and where they are needed. Fully charged ePod battery cartridges, connected through cloud-based services and management centres are installed on the principle of being sized per trip, not for the size of the vessel. The batteries are swapped at automated PwrSwäp stations “within minutes.” Shift’s energy storage systems are intended for a wide range of applications both maritime and shore based including ports and ferry terminals but it is perhaps the product’s modular nature that fits with the similar nature of Kotug’s E-Pusher tug concept. Kotug offers three E-Pusher models in the series ranging

from 5.5m to 22m in length and maximum depth of 0.45m to 1.35m resulting in draughts 30% less than conventional pusher tug designs. As well as battery power, the swappable energy containers offer Stage V diesel, biogas and hydrogen options. Kotug’s OptiPort dispatching, route planning and reporting tool optimises expected departure and arrival times, routing and speed control reducing energy usage allowing just-intime operations and is currently in use in Australia, Japan, Belgium, Canada, US and the Netherlands. An S-type E-Pusher marketed as CityBarge is now in use transporting waste on the historic canals in Leiden, the Netherlands.

Shift CEO Brent Perry said: “The message of COP26 is clear; we have to make changes now, with no time to waste. Shipping accounts for significant GHG emissions, contributing to climate change, as well as particulates that are unhealthy for communities living near ports and inland waterways. PwrSwäp and E-Pusher bring zero emissions solutions today.

TUGS & TOWING

WÄRTSILÄ TO DEVELOP ADVANCED TUGS IN CHINA

8 Tianjin Port is part of the partnership

Wärtsilä Voyage has signed a MoU with China Classification Society (CSS) and Tianjin Port to develop China’s next-generation intelligent tug in line with CSS intelligent ship standards. Intelligent tugs are developing in several forms including adapting established technology as reliability and functionality improves through potentially to future autonomous unmanned vessels. These advances allow the journey along the road to be a gradual one and this project has a larger aim to research, develop and adopt relevant technologies to enhance safety and efficiency with Tianjin being the reference case port and includes wider ambitions to develop intelligent ship standards for domestic vessels. Wärtsilä Voyage is the intelligent marine technology arm of the Helsinki-based company and the project’s scope includes delivering advanced situational awareness technology and highly advanced digital simulators to enhance and expedite vessel concept testing, including intelligent and autonomous algorithm testing, training and safety. Wärtsilä Voyage states it will: “conduct systematic and human-centric user research to help optimise workflow and improve overall work performance and safety.” Developing the

Wärtsilä Voyage is the intelligent marine technology arm of the Helsinki-based company and the project’s scope includes delivering advanced situational awareness technology and highly advanced digital simulators to enhance and expedite vessel concept testing, including intelligent and autonomous algorithm testing, training and safety standards will also involve establishing international collaboration and knowledge exchange on safety standards and best practices of such smart vessels. The newbuild tug, expected to begin operation in Q4 2023, will be equipped with an advanced situational awareness system to detect small objects in low visibility conditions providing decisionmaking support to the crew. Looking at operations beyond the harbour wall, the aim is for the technology to be extended to domestic vessels in the future. The ‘advanced technologies’ grabbing attention of late have potential mileage not only for tug owners and operators themselves but also their customers, ship owners who

want to present a green image within their own operations. Ports also have an interest and with nine out of ten of the world’s busiest ports in Asia, seven of which are in China, Tianjin Port is also looking to benefit from any potential efficiency gains for their own operation. Increasing traffic, congestion, weather unpredictability and emissions have presented challenges for ports worldwide, Wärtsilä stating vessels in Asia are facing waiting times of five to seven days. This has acted as catalysts for ports to adopt innovative technologies to help mitigate delays and disruptions, including in Tianjin’s example shoreside activities as well as shiphandling tug operations.

TUGS & TOWING

Ocean Investigator was towed from Greece to Turkey

An operation from last year reported recently by Tsavliris Salvage underlines the complexity of such incidents requiring the skill and resources only professional salvors can provide. The incident involved the 2008-built, 58,735dwt bulk carrier Navios Amaryllis which ran aground on Rasfaree Reed in the Kaafu Atoll, Maldives. The vessel was in ballast at the time and on passage from Tuticorin, India to Saldanha Bay, South Africa; on the same day of grounding Tsavliris was appointed salvor and tasked to assist. The anchor-handling tugs Virgo and Maha Wewa were mobilised to the location, the task developing into a major operation involving an extensive fleet of auxiliary local craft including high speed workboats, two landing craft, two barges, forklift and crane-equipped trucks along with a typical array of marine salvage equipment including antipollution booms, skimmers and Dyneema ropes and of course the required complement of skilled personnel. Protection of the environment was as always high on the list of priorities for the salvor in what was considered an environmentally sensitive area and all the necessary precautions were adopted including close cooperation with local authorities and subcontractors including Cyprus-based environmental pollution specialist Polygreen (Polyco Group) who Tsavliris described as “first class.” Preparations for refloating Navios Amaryllis included the transfer of 1,600t of bunker fuel and lubricants from lower to topside tanks to minimise the risk of any potential pollution along with sealing of underwater cracks by divers. After ten days the vessel was successfully refloated and anchored at the port of Male where preparations were made for a tow to a repair yard. Fate had not finished

with Navios Amaryllis however when the vessel began dragging its anchor in adverse weather and the tug Virgo was mobilised to assist and tow it back to its initial anchoring position. Arguably a less dramatic operation for Tsavliris was towing the rescue/survey vessel Ocean Investigator from Ambelaki, Salamis Island, Greece to Tuzla Shipyard, Turkey. The Greek-owned tug Foteini Z was tasked from

Piraeus for the job but once again the weather decided to intervene and three days after setting out shelter was sought for a further two days. During the Canakkale Strait passage, a coastal safety tug provided escort services with arrival at the destination marking another successful operation for Tsavliris.

The complex operation has also involved extensive measures to mitigate pollution from the more than 4,000 vehicles on board 8 Turkish tug operator and shipbuilder Med Marine has signed a memorandum of understanding with Emirates classification society TASNEEF. The agreement signed recently in Abu Dhabi between Med Marine chairman Recai Hakan Şen and TASNEEF’s general manager Waleed Altamimi aims to create prospective collaborations in the maritime and shipbuilding industries including to “create value and business opportunities for the mutual benefits and interests of both companies.”

8 The towing industry, particularly the tug building sector is mourning the loss of Captain Altay Altuğ, founder of Turkey’s Uzmar Shipyard and described as the “doyen of Turkish Maritime.” Graduating from today’s Istanbul Technical University in 1952 Captain Altay Altuğ had a career at sea on passenger and cargo ships until 1961 before becoming a harbour pilot in İzmir port rising to the role of İzmir Port Chief Pilot and later president of Uzmar Shipyard. During his pilotage career he established the first modern pilot station in İzmir on a floating pontoon with VHF radio communication facilities. In the meantime, he played a significant role in establishing pilotage services at İzmir Aliağa Refinery.

BASQUE WIND POWER FORUM The Basque Energy Cluster has met up to share the latest on its activities in person Bilbao One of the highlights of The Basque Energy Cluster’s Wind Power Sector Forum was a visit to the construction of the prototype of the DemoSATH floating platform by Saitec Offshore Technologies. The DemoSATH prototype is the first Spanish floating marine wind turbine connected to the grid. Saitec Offshore Technologies and RWE Renewables have joined forces to deploy this pilot project that aims to test a marine wind turbine off the Basque coast in 2022, using SATH technology. DemoSATH The aim of the pilot project is to compile data and acquire real knowledge of aspects such as its construction, operation and maintenance over a period of three and a half years. The first 18 months will be devoted to the design and construction and the following two years to its operation. When completed, DemoSATH will be equipped with a 2MW turbine, will have a beam of 30 metres and length of 64 metres. It will be installed on the BIMEP testing platform, two nautical miles off the Basque coast, at a site with a depth of 85 metres. The support received from institutions, such as the Basque Energy Agency, the Port of Bilbao and the Basque Government, has facilitated the development of this initiative from the outset, which is aligned with the Basque energy strategy. THE CONFERENCE The Basque Energy Cluster’s Wind Power Sector Forum, coordinated by Siemens Gamesa, was held on 17 December at the Port of Bilbao and was attended by 50 wind power companies. It kicked off with several presentations related to the international expansion of the offshore wind power sector and the connection with the Basque value chain by the three driving entities, Siemens Gamesa, Iberdrola and RWE. The

aim was to showcase the positive prospects of the market and internationalisation opportunities for Basque companies. The Basque Energy Cluster also used the conference as an opportunity to go through the activities scheduled for the international WindEurope Annual Event Bilbao 2022 event to be held in April 2022. During the conference’s second session, the focus of the recently announced Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) for Renewable Energies, Renewable Hydrogen and Storage was reviewed, in relation to it being a special opportunity for the Basque industry. Siemens Gamesa also shared its proposals for the EU Next Generation fund and gave presentations on the progress of three R&D projects of special interest for the sector: WATEREYE (H2020), FLOAT&M (HAZITEK) and NEOMAT (ELKARTEK).

MARINE RENEWABLES

THE ENVIRONMENTAL HEADACHE OF USED TURBINE BLADES We’re all onboard with the increasing carbon reduction benefits of moving to ever larger and more efficient offshore wind turbines, but what do we do with the thousands of scrap blades? At the moment one environmentally disastrous option is landfill, and industry body WindEurope has recently called for a Europe-wide landfill ban on decommissioned wind turbine blades by 2025. Europe’s wind industry actively commits to re-use, recycle, or recover 100% of decommissioned blades. This comes after several industryleading companies announced ambitious plans for blade recycling and recovery. A landfill ban would further accelerate the development of sustainable recycling technologies for composite materials, says WindEurope. At the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE)’s Annual Congress Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, and Juan Virgilio Márquez, General Director of AEE, called upon the European Commission to propose a Europe-wide ban on landfilling decommissioned wind turbine blades. The ban should enter into force by 2025 and also apply to other large composite components in the nacelles of modern wind turbines. Today the standard lifetime of an onshore wind farm is around 20-25 years. 85-90% of the total mass of a wind turbine can already be recycled. Most of the components – including steel, cement, copper wire, electronics and gearing – have established recycling circles. However, wind turbine blades are more challenging to recycle. They contain complex composite materials - a combination of reinforced fibres (usually glass or carbon fibres) and a polymer matrix. These composites boost the performance of wind turbines. They allow for lighter and longer blades with optimised aerodynamics. But their configuration also poses challenges for recycling.

There are some technologies available to recycle the composite materials in blades, and an increasing number of companies offer composite recycling services, but these solutions are not yet mature enough, widely available at industrial scale and/or cost-competitive Such composites are not only used in wind turbine blades. They are important materials in sectors such as aviation, automotives, marine transport, aeronautics, leisure and sports equipment, construction and building. There are some technologies available to recycle the composite materials in blades, and an increasing number of companies offer composite recycling services, but these solutions are not yet mature enough, widely available at industrial scale and/or cost-competitive. Making these

28 | JANUARY 2022

technologies commercially viable will require commitment from policy makers, other composite users and the recycling industry. WindEurope expects around 25,000 tonnes of blades to reach the end of their operational life annually by 2025. Germany and Spain will see the highest number of decommissioned blades, followed by Denmark. Towards the end of the decade Italy, France and Portugal will also start to significantly decommission blades and the annual decommissioned volume could double to 52,000 tonnes by 2030. Governments can play a decisive role in driving the circularity of wind turbine blades. They should increase funding on Research and Development (R+D) in the commercialisation and scale up of different blade recycling technologies. These include mechanical grinding, pyrolysis, microwave pyrolysis, high-voltage pulse fragmentation, solvolysis and fluidised bed. The EU should also provide R+D funding to foster the development and use of new circular blade materials.

INDUSTRIAL HYDROGEN PIONEER The world’s first industrial site for renewable green hydrogen production using wind turbines has been inaugurated. French hydrogen producer Lhyfe said its plant in Bouin (Vendée), France is now producing the first renewable green hydrogen in the world made using an electrolyser powered directly by wind turbines, and in industrial quantities (up to a tonne a day). Matthieu Guesné, CEO and founder of LHyfe, said: “A year after laying the foundation stone, we are extremely proud to be launching this site, which is symbolic of course for us, but also for what it represents for energy transition. Our gratitude goes to our five initial partners, who have made this “mad” project to change our energy model possible. Now we have succeeded this first step, we are ready to move faster.” VOLUME TO RAMP UP The site currently produces 300kg a day, but will ramp up to a tonne a day in the coming months. Lhyfe’s hydrogen will supply four refuelling stations in western France. Some fifty or so heavy vehicles, buses and

refuse collectors will be powered by renewable green hydrogen in LoireAtlantique, Sarthe, and Vendée at first. Further rollout will happen eunder the VHyGO project in particular. Lhyfe will soon reveal the names of other operators that it will be supplying, in sectors such haulage, logistics and industry. Lhyfe’s first R&D centre, adjacent to the production site, is dedicated primarily to optimizing its production process and to

offshore development work. It is already prepared to produce hydrogen at sea, through a first renewable hydrogen production demonstrator that will be implemented in a few months off the coast of Loire-Atlantique. The company has already confirmed around sixty projects throughout Europe. Lhyfe has raised €50m to support Lhyfe’s development in France and abroad, through the strengthening of its teams and the funding of R&D and new projects.

A new interactive infographic summarises the key considerations owners and operators should make when building a cyber security plan. The Shipowners’ Club infographic is based on the IMO’s recommendation of a cyber security risk management framework based in five functional elements: Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover. ‘Identify’ - which systems are vulnerable to attacks, which systems are vital to operations and who is responsible for them. 5 Protect - the plan should define measures to prevent attacks from taking place. 5 Detect - if an attack does happen, recognising it can mitigate damage 5 Respond - plan a clear means of getting back up and running as quickly as possible using a second system. 5 Recover - get the primary system back running and analyse the cause.

Security focus for new Installation Standard

8 The ‘MV Neptune Cyber’ ship allows visitors to go on a virtual exploration of a vessel and understand potential cyber risks

on a virtual exploration of a vessel and understand potential cyber risks. In June 2017, the IMO laid out its ‘Guidelines on Maritime Cyber Risk Management’. Shipowners and managers now have until 1 January 2021 to build cyber risk management into their ship safety initiatives - or risk having their ships detained. Gwilym Lewis, CEO of Neptune Cyber, said: “Our quick-start guide includes clear action steps to help you prepare for the new IMO regulations. Depending on the complexity of your vessel more steps may be needed to adequately protect against cyber attacks.”

Educational information about preventing theft and improving vessel security has been added to the next version of a voluntary standard that clarifies and defines competent installation practices. The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) aims to help prevent the theft of marine electronic displays and systems with its NMEA 0400 Installation Standard. The Installation Standard additions describe marine electronic display installations using specialty security through-bolts and nuts along with other best practice recommendations that make removal of a display from the vessel more difficult.

POWER & PROPULSION

HYDROGEN ENGINE RETROFIT PAYOFF One offshore wind crew transfer operator has benefitted from reduced fuel usage and emissions with catalytic hydrogen technology

CLEVER TECH Ecomotus is a UK research and development company and its EcoPro system is designed to inject pure hydrogen into the vessel’s engines through the air filter, thereby ensuring a 100% fuel burn in the combustion chamber and a quicker combustion cycle. Adrian Bartlett from Ecomotus explained that retrofitting the system to Kitty Petra’s MAN engines and its Kohler generator has enabled the company to work closely with Tidal Transit helping its skippers to use the data provided by the system to achieve the best balance of vessel performance and fuel economy. “Using Kitty Petra’s wi-fi we can monitor the EcoPro system in real time and, if necessary, adjust it to ensure the efficiency of the vessel’s engines.” “A dashboard is also provided to enable vessel owners or fleet managers to monitor the system’s operation at any time,” he said.

Source: Tidal Transit

Tidal Transit’s offshore wind energy crew transfer vessel Kitty Petra was fitted with the Ecomotus EcoPro catalytic hydrogen system in 2020 and Leo Hambro, commercial director, believes that the reductions in vessel fuel consumption and CO2 and NOx emissions have been tangible. “We are very excited to have another ‘industry first’ on the road to decarbonising the marine industry. Ecomotus’s intelligent system has shown that it reduces fuel usage and resultant CO2 emissions by 20% while also slicing 67% of our NOx emissions. It is phenomenal and I only wish we had invented it!,” he said.

8 Kitty Petra was fitted with the Ecomotus EcoPro catalytic hydrogen system in 2020

With over 400 CTVs currently operating in the offshore energy marine sector, Mr Hambro has calculated that if each vessel uses approximately 1,500 litres of fuel per day for 250 days per year, a 20% reduction in fuel would save a staggering 30 million litres of diesel (78,000 tonnes of CO2) annually, with over 60% reduction in NOx emissions. He said: “I believe the Ecomotus system is now ready for mass adoption by the offshore energy crew transfer vessel sector to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions and save fuel costs.”

Two Nowegian ferry connections are being kitted out with autonomous charging solutions. The electrification of another two Norway ferry connections will be realised thanks to Zinus’ autonomous charging solution selected by the automation group, SEAM. “Together with Zinus, SEAM has previously delivered charging systems to several ferries. In our opinion, Zinus offers efficient technology with good charging capacity. The Zinus system is also very elegant in appearance and the charging tower’s footprint makes it both easy to place and space-saving on the quay,” said Karl Norheim, project manager at SEAM. “Furthermore, the solution is very flexible in relation to installation height, which is an advantage in ferry connections with large tidal differences.”

POWER & PROPULSION The Fastwater project aims to build on Methanol’s numerous references as a simple to adopt sustainable marine fuel. The Fastwater Consortium and the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) recently successfully demonstrated a pilot boat which has been converted to operate on Methanol fuel. The demonstration in Stockholm Harbour follows the successful bunkering of the vessel at the SMA pilot station in Oxelösund, Sweden, where the pilot boat will be based. The event was addressed by Members of the Swedish National Parliament Johan Büser and Anders Hansson who spoke to the importance of alternative fuels like Methanol in reducing carbon and pollution emissions on a local and national basis. Low carbon energy available to shoreside facilities using renewable electricity are hard to replicate onboard ship so for the myriad of small craft - tugs, enforcement vessels, dredgers and pilot boats - other sustainable solutions are needed. Faced with the problem of needing to cut emissions quickly, port and harbour authorities are examining and investing in methanol as an option that can virtually eliminate air pollution and contribute towards lower carbon.

have engine efficiency similar to diesel engines. Emissions reductions were substantial compared to conventional fuel oil. With funding from the European Commission, Fastwater focuses on high impact outcomes, designing retrofit solutions for existing ships and designs for newbuildings, employing Methanol as a future-proof alternative marine fuel to create a fast track to carbon neutral shipping. The project aims to commercialize medium and high-speed Methanol-fuelled engines for shipping. Consortium members, including OEMs, shipyards, naval architects, ship owners/ operators, port and maritime authorities, classification, fuel producers, and research institutes, will demonstrate feasibility on three vessels running on methanol fuel: a harbour tug, a pilot boat, and a coast guard vessel. In addition, Fastwater will provide training programs for vessel crew and portside staff, develop rules and regulations for Methanol marine fuel use and demonstrate the complete value chain for bunkering methanol.

‘‘

In this final stage, Kongsberg has built a full-scale electric propulsion system based on hydrogen-powered fuel cells at Ågotnes outside Bergen. The system will now undertake a four-month testing program for validation purposes with the aim of verifying the final design for an H2-powered RoPax ferry. Testing is intended to demonstrate the ease with which H2 fuel cells can be successfully integrated with a proven marine hybrid electric drive system. The testing mirrors the operational loads which would be experienced by a vessel on a route between Kirkwall and Shapinsay in Orkney. It will confirm safe operation and power

and fuel capacity requirements, together with other valuable information to feed back to the vessel design team at Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) in Scotland. CMAL plans to complete the design in March 2022. Hydrogen fuel will be generated through wind power at the ferry port. “If we are to succeed with hydrogen investment in Norway, both to reduce national emissions and create new, green and sustainable jobs, we are dependent on being able to show complete pilots on a full scale,” said Egil Haugsdal, CEO of Kongsberg Maritime. ”This means that the next step will be to show the technology in operation, and then quickly put in place the surrounding infrastructure. Orkney will be the first practical usage of this technology while the Norwegian maritime cluster has the opportunity develop our own pilots and projects here in Norway.” This project is the third and final part of the EU funded project “HySeas” which has been running since 2013 to prepare and demonstrate a scalable hydrogen system for ships and ferries.

SILENT SAILING THROUGH ANTARCTIC ICE The new Antarctic Supply & Research Vessel (ASRV) Nuyina for the Australian government has arrived at its home port of Hobart in Tasmania

8 Antarctic Supply & Research Vessel (ASRV) Nuyina for the Australian government

Bakker Sliedrecht supplied the flexible electric propulsion for the special (Damen built) vessel, enabling the Nuyina to sail both electrically and in hybrid modus and break through the Antarctic ice at full power. The Nuyina can sail in temperatures of forty degrees below zero and break through 1.65 meters thick ice at a speed of three knots. The name Nuyina is the Tasmanian Aboriginal word for southern lights. The hybrid propulsion enables the Nuyina to sail in different modes. It can sail entirely on diesel to get from A to B as quickly as possible. Fully electric for quiet and economical sailing or on a diesel engine and an electric motor, where the other diesel engine generates energy. In the icebreaker mode, the diesel engines as well as the electric motors and thrusters can be used at full power. In DP mode, those thrusters hold the ship in position. Bakker Sliedrecht supplied four water-cooled frequency drives that can be deployed multifunctionally, for the two propulsion motors 3700kW each or for the three thrusters with 1300kW electric motors at the stern, three thrusters with 1300kW electric motors for the bow and two transformers for the Power Take Off/Power Take In system. (PTO/PTI). This generates power for propulsion as well as for other purposes, such as on-board voltage. The thrusters are used for both propulsion and the Dynamic Positioning (DP) system that keeps the ship in position. Bakker Sliedrecht provided training for the Australian crew to help them get to know the

installation and to operate all the modes of electric propulsion. Due to the corona measures, the training was given online. “From the first application in 2013 to completion in 2021, Bakker Sliedrecht was directly involved in every phase of this complex project. The vessel had to be able to sail under very difficult circumstances and heavy weather conditions. It also needed a hybrid propulsion. That made it technically very complex and the project very challenging,” says project manager Arie de Jong of Bakker Sliedrecht. “That is reflected in the construction time. We received the first order in 2016 and it was delivered in the summer of 2021. However, the Nuyina has become a state-of-the-art ship with unique features. We as Bakker Sliedrecht and its project team are proud of that.”

FERRY MODERNISATION ON TRACK

Photo: Stena Line

Making OSVs greener

COVID-19 hasn’t slowed the ferry modernisation plans of one ambitious industry player. Swedish ferry company Stena Line has taken delivery of its newest RoPax ferry, Stena Scandica (ex Stena Lagan). The vessel is the first of two Visentini vessels to be lengthened and modernised by Stena RoRo at Sedef Shipyard in Tuzla, Turkey. Stena Line CEO, Niclas Mårtensson, said: “Taking delivery of the large, modern and efficient vessel Stena Scandica is a major milestone for Stena Line and enables us to continue to grow together with our customers in the Baltic Sea.” The Stena Scandica is being

lengthened with a 36m midsection. After the conversion it is 222m long, with a capacity of 970 passengers and 2,875 freight lane metres. To increase the loading efficiency, the vessel has been modified with drive through capabilities on two levels. The vessel has also been fitted with several sustainable features and fuel efficiency improvements, such as hybrid scrubbers, ballast water cleaning systems, twisted leading edge rudder with costa bulb. Sister vessel Stena Baltica (ex Stena Mersey) will undergo the same modifications. Per Westling, MD at Stena

8 The Stena Scandica modifications will enable more capacity and improved efficiency

RoRo, pointed out the new capacity and efficiency measures result in a reduction of emissions for the lorries transported on the ferries and a shorter port turnaround time for a lower speed at sea. Stena Scandica will start operating on Stena Line’s route between Nynäshamn in Sweden and Ventspils in Latvia in the beginning of July. Later this year, Stena Baltica will join Stena Scandica. With both vessels in place, the total capacity increase on the route is 30%.

Greentech expansion drives Poland investment Yara Marine’s new site in Gdansk will serve turnkey deliveries as part of the company’s green tech expansion, such as shore power and WindWings, as well as onboard repairs and upgrades. This marks a milestone for Yara Marine Technologies as they move into installation. Aleksander Askeland, CSO at Yara Marine Technologies said: “When introducing new and

unfamiliar technologies to the maritime industry, we experience that we need to be able to supervise and cover some of the installations ourselves, if only to get local installation and commissioning teams on the right track. We often send our engineers to help on particularly difficult tasks, and now we can send our installation team as well”. To start with, the installation

team will focus on conversions, assembly, welding and repairs. The new site will also function as a complementary addition to Yara Marine’s suppliers in the after-sales part of the business. This enables the company to further strengthen its service capabilities and add value to its long-term service agreements. The facility is located at Budowlanych no 17L, 80-298 Gdańsk.

Offshore support vessels (OSVs) serving the offshore wind sector will become greener with a new initiative. Columbia Group member, CSM Energy and Hydrus Engineering have joined forces to assess and retrofit OSVs involved in offshore installations and operations, turning them into hybrid ships powered by battery and fuel. Lambros Nakos, partner at technical consultant Hydrus Engineering, said: “The current order book for new OSVs has declined since 2016, with fewer than 50 vessels ordered since the beginning of 2020. Given that OSVs already in operation will likely run for another 25 years, retrofitting them is the best option for ensuring vessels in the offshore wind farm sector are eco-friendly.” What’s included in the deal? Services include a feasibility assessment, pre-financing evaluation, budgeting and procurement control, engineering, retrofitting, supervision and commissioning. The upgraded vessels will use significantly less fuel, reducing emissions and cutting maintenance costs for the diesel generators that power the ships. Retrofitting existing vessels will be far quicker and much more cost-effective than building greener OSVs from scratch, according to a joint CSM Energy and Hydrus Engineering statement on the expected demand for greener ships in the offshore sector. The OSV market has struggled in recent years because of the oversupply of vessels and the declining need for oil. But demand for these ships is expected to grow as investment in the offshore wind market continues to rise.

RETROFIT SEES 24% REDUCTION IN FUEL USAGE A retrofit on a small passenger vessel has resulted in reduced fuel consumption of 24% and reduced emissions. Swiss shipowner CGN retrofitted Hull Vane B.V’s Hull Vane and a bulbous bow from a local subcontractor on the 30m passenger vessel Valais. The main engines were also replaced with new common-rail V8 MAN engines. After launching of the vessel, ballast was added in the bow to bring the ship to the appropriate draught. Irwin Gafner, technical director of CGN, said: “We are extremely pleased with the results of this retrofit. Improving the hydrodynamics of a vessel makes perfect sense, regardless of which fuel we will be using in the future. Using less fuel makes a future energy transition easier and more affordable, and in the meantime, we have the benefit of lower fuel costs, less CO2 emissions, less noise and less waves.”

ECO-BENEFITS In spite of the significant amount of added weight, including Hull

Vane, bulbous bow construction and ballast, the results showed that the fuel consumption of the vessel was reduced by 24%. Additionally, the company calculated that the retrofit will reduce CO2 emissions by 129t per year, plus reduce diesel particles and NOx emissions by 24%. Noise measurements on board also showed that the improved efficiency, lower rpm’s and new engines made the vessel quieter:

Dutch dredging major Van Oord has signed a threeyear agreement with ABB Turbocharging to provide fleetwide maintenance and optimization services. The agreement comes as two Van Oord vessels receive the first turbocharger upgrades of their kind in the dredger sector, saving thousands of tons in fuel and carbon emissions over the next decade. The service agreement, which marks more than thirty years of

cooperation between Van Oord and ABB Turbocharging, will help the owner minimize lifecycle costs and improve emissions across its fleet. As well as offering full technical support and access to the latest turbocharger technologies and digital solutions, ABB Turbocharging will provide maintenance planning and budget control based on a ten-year strategic outlook. OCEAN SCIENCES Geoquip Marine has successfully completed a highly challenging offshore windfarm geotechnical investigation in harsh environmental conditions off the coast of Japan. Geoquip and strategic partner Fukada operated the highly capable Poseidon 1 for the project for Influx Offshore Wind Power HD. Poseidon 1 is a DP2 vessel with a twin tower derrick permanently installed over a central moonpool. The presence of rock below mudline made standard push sampling and CPT testing techniques impractical to complete the boreholes. As a result, Geoquip Marine chose to utilise a wireline core barrel to recover rock cores and progress boreholes. Geoquip was able to perform coring in rock utilising the standard API drill string because the Geoquip system enables the use of wireline core barrels without the need to recover the drill string. “The fact that sampling, CPT testing and coring was able to be completed with a single drill string when changing mode from sampling and CPT testing to coring meant that the process was completed very rapidly and highly efficiently,”

CORE BARREL TECHNOLOGY FOR CHALLENGING WIND POWER SITE INVESTIGATION

A new laboratory testing facility will offer fast and accurate analysis of all types of geotechnical data. Offshore geotechnical engineering and drilling company, Geoquip Marine has unveiled an in-house onshore testing laboratory in Bristol, UK that includes eight separate laboratory areas. The analyses undertaken include sample logging, classification/index testing, consolidation, shear, triaxial and effective stress testing. “This is a highly significant development for our company following a sustained period of remarkable growth,” commented Geoquip Marine chief executive, Stewart Higginson. “Up to now we have been working with external partners for our onshore laboratory testing and there is no secret in the market that the shortage of suitable providers was becoming ever more of a problem as demand has increased.” By providing this laboratory, Geoquip Marine aims to present

“Given the challenging conditions experienced throughout the duration of the work, the time saved by not having to recover the drill string to perform coring, improved safety by reducing the risk exposure of the drill crew whilst allowing operations to be completed in shorter weather windows, which contributed to the contract being completed with no safety concerns whatsoever,” he concluded.

explained Project Manager Torran Purchase. “Utilising the wireline core barrel in these circumstances provided us with really excellent recoveries – whilst allowing us to change back to sampling and

customers with a comprehensive end-to-end service, worldwide. Higginson added: “Our objective was to be able to provide our clients with the accurate and reliable data possible, delivered to meet their project timelines, and I’m delighted that we have succeeded in that.”

Lidar buoys will fact find for energy islands Floating wind lidar measurements will be taken for what will be the world’s first offshore artificial energy island, which is being constructed for the Danish Government. Fugro will install and operate four SEAWATCH wind lidar buoys at two locations, Energioe Nordsoen and Energioe Baltic, that will act as hubs connecting several offshore wind farms. From October, these buoys will record continuous wind measurements for a minimum of 1 year to support wind-resource mapping for the two islands, and the engineering and design of the future wind farms. Fugro is already performing geophysical surveys for the Energy Island project under a separate contract to provide Energinet with a reliable derisked site interpretation. The SEAWATCH wind lidar buoy can record wind measurements up to 250m above sea level, and wave measurements and current profiles down to the seabed. The buoy also acts as a multipurpose platform for additional metocean sensors and, on this project, will be fitted with sensors to capture Geo-data on environmental impact parameters, including bat monitoring.

RTSys and IFREMER have jointly developed a new system that helps standardise data collected during studies into the impact of global warming on the oceans. The European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water column Observatory (EMSO) researches deepwater ecosystems, generating data on marine, tectonic, volcanic, hydrothermal and gravity processes as well as monitoring associated natural risks to coastal areas such as earthquakes and tsunamis. The EMSO Generic Instrument Module (EGIM) aims to standardise these measurements obtained at a variety of locations by using the same equipment, sensor references, methods of qualification and calibration, data formats and maintenance procedures. At the heart of the EGIM system is COSTOF2, a datalogger than can reach depths of up to 6,000 metres, sourcing data from

a wide range of sensors of different make, model and type. It has been designed to continuously measure environmental parameters, providing data on marine changes in Europe, and will soon be deployed by the Portuguese

Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere off the southwest coast of Portugal, at a depth of 4830 metres. COSTOF2 allows the data for up to 12 sensors to be synchronised via acoustic modem or by WiFi and can be operated on mooring lines, seabed stations and surface buoys.

Energy harvesting smart buoy prototypes Nagasaki University and Kyocera Corporation have announced their joint development of an Energy Harvesting Smart Buoy. The new technology combines Nagasaki University’s tidal current power generation technology with Kyocera’s IoT technology to collect reliable ocean data. The buoys can collect a wide range of marine data using self-generated energy. Marine pollution and climate change have become serious societal issues. To solve these issues and help create a more sustainable world, scientists need more reliable ways to monitor and visualize various sea conditions. However, maintaining a stable power supply is a big challenge for continuous data collection at sea. Therefore, Nagasaki University and Kyocera developed the “Energy Harvesting Smart Buoy,” which generates its own electric power for continuous ocean data collection using a

tidal-current power generation system in the buoy. The new Smart Buoy combines tidal-current power generation technology from Nagasaki University and IoT-related technology from Kyocera. In addition, Kyocera has future plans to monitor fisheries and aquaculture, conduct ocean surveys, and more. Each prototype is equipped with two different tidal-current power generation systems: SLTT (Small Lens-type Tidal

Turbines) - The buoy and power generation are separate, and a diffuser is installed around the turbine. In addition to protecting the turbine, the diffuser has the effect of increasing the flow of water for better power generation. VTT (Vertical-axis Tidal Turbines) - The power generation element is directly connected to the buoy. Its AI-guided design incorporates a tilted axis to optimize turbine rotation amid heavy ocean swells and waves.

BIDS READY FOR FIRST OFFSHORE ENERGY ISLAND Belgium’s DEME Group and Royal Boskalis Westminster of the Netherlands have joined a consortium to develop an energy island in the Danish North Sea They join contractors ACCIONA and MT Hojgaard International to form the NJORD Group, which has signed a partnership agreement with Denmark’s Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), a global fund manager focused on renewable energy investments. The Danish Energy Agency is currently in dialogue with potential bidders for the energy island tender, which is expected to be launched by Q3 of this year The energy island will be located some 80-100km off the Danish west coast, where conditions for green energy production based on offshore wind are optimal. The island will be able to connect 10GW of offshore wind to Denmark and other neighbouring markets, host an innovation zone with potential for large scale energy storage and Power-to-X technologies, and provide accommodation and operation and maintenance services from onsite harbour facilities. The signing of this agreement marks a significant step towards realising the world’s first energy island, a project conceptualised by CIP. CIP acts as project developer on behalf of an investor consortium composed of PensionDenmark and PFA, two of Denmark’s largest pension funds, and Denmark’s largest utility company, Andel. The grouping is collectively known as the Vindo consortium. The realisation of offshore energy islands could herald an era of symbiosis and new opportunity for the four major global dredging contractors (DEME, Bosklais, Van Oord and Jan De Nul), all of whom have diversified heavily into marine offshore energy. Luc Vandenbulcke, CEO of the DEME Group said: “We are proud to join CIP and the Vindo consortium, which gathers a

core group of global leaders in maritime engineering solutions for offshore renewable energy production, storage and transmission. DEME Group has been pioneering the concept of energy islands off the coast and is currently involved in designing, planning and executing similar projects in different parts of the world.” Royal Boskalis Westminster CEO Peter Berdowski added: “We look forward to taking the development of renewables further offshore to create a sustainable new horizon for millions of European households.”

Sustainable biofuel for Boskalis dredgers Dutch dredging major Royal Boskalis Westminster has taken delivery of its largest ever consignment of drop-in biofuel which will be used to power two trailing suction hopper dredgers on upcoming projects in northwestern Europe. The use of biofuel will result in a CO2 reduction of approximately 90% for the 12,000 m3 capacity Willem van Oranje and approximately 45% for the 4,500 m3 capacity Strandway. The delivery of some 1,000 m3 of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a sustainable biofuel derived from used cooking oil, was in collaboration with Boskalis’ long term partner and fuel supplier, Goodfuels. Boskalis’ own testing programme with GoodFuels and engine manufacturer Wartsila that began in 2015 has demonstrated that

drop-in marine biofuels can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil fuels. In 2019, as part of the ‘Boskalis on Bio’ programme, the Willem van Oranje became the world’s first dredging vessel to operate on 100% biofuel oil. Since then, Boskalis has successfully used various biofuel blends as

an alternative to fossil fuels on both dredging and offshore installation vessels as well as for dry earth moving equipment, resulting in considerable emissions reductions. Through its agreement with GoodFuels, Boskalis enables clients to opt for biofuel powered vessels to reduce their carbon emissions on projects. In 2020, 80% of Boskalis’ project tenders in the Netherlands included sustainabilty measures, including options to use biofuels. Willem van Oranje has recently been deployed for dredging works on the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link, an immersed tunnel crossing the 18km wide Fehmarn Belt in the Baltic Sea. The works are being undertaken under the auspices of Fehmarn Belt Contractors (FBC), a joint venture between Boskalis and fellow Dutch dredging contractor Van Oord.

DREDGING

PLANNING PAYS IN WILLEM DE RUBROECK’S DEBUT Belgian contractor Jan De Nul’s most powerful cutter suction dredger, the 41,346 kW Willem de Rubroeck, has successfully completed its maiden project in Mauritania The Willem de Rubroeck was instrumental in delivering the new ARISE port terminal in the harbour at Nouakchott for the northwest African country. The vessel was required to work in large Atlantic Ocean swells dredging hard seabed and also worked near existing port infrastructure in shallow waters. Willem de Rubroeck worked in tandem on this project with Jan De Nul’s trailing suction hopper dredger James Cook. Together the vessels deepened the access channel to the capital city’s port, as well as the port basin and alongside at the new ARISE port terminal. Willem de Rubroeck pre-cut the hard seabed which was then dredged by the James Cook with assistance from the barges Pinta, Boussole, L’Aigle, and Le Gurrier. A total of some three million m3 of hard soil was removed. Willem de Rubroeck was designed to dredge hard, rocky soils in difficult sea and weather conditions which can adversely affect project planning and impact budgets. For a cutter suction dredger to work effectively the spud and cutter head must remain in the same position at all times. Jan De Nul made design adjustments to the spud carrier and the flexible suspension of the Willem de Rubroeck’s cutter ladder which allowed for greater movement of the vessel’s structure and absorbed vibrations, enabling work to continue in adverse conditions. The spud carrier travelling cylinder was given a dynamic and active component , meaning the work spud in the spud carrier is suspended by shock absorbers. When forces on the spud become too great, the shock absorbers protect the spuds from becoming overloaded.

The cutter ladder moves up and down with the help of two winches. Unlike most cutter suction dredgers, where the ladder is attached by wire to the ladder gantry, the Willem de Rubroeck’s ladder suspension rests on air cushions. Vibrations are absorbed by the air cushions, reducing the risk of damage to the vessel. Willem de Rubroeck is capable of dredging to an impressive depth of 45m. Pre-planning for the project included geological studies and analysis of long-term average wave conditions at the site to determine the most opportune start time.

Dredging starts Ardersier Port transformation Dredging works have started in Scotland which will enable the reopening of a repurposed Ardersier Port as Europe’s first fully circular Energy Transition Facility. In the 1970s Ardersier, a vast and currently unused port 14 miles east of Inverness, was one of the largest oil rig fabrication yards in the world, employing up to 4,500 workers. Covering an area of 162ha and with more than 1km of quayside, Ardersier is the largest brownfield port in the UK. The port’s new owners have an agreement with floating offshore wind developer BW Ideol guaranteeing the latter exclusive access to the port for the manufacture of their concrete floating wind foundations. The nine month, £20m dredging works will enable the creation of an oil rig decommissioning facility which will recycle

oil rigs of the past to make the foundations for future floating offshore windfarms. Some 2.5 miilion m3 of sand dredged to reopen the port will be beneficially reused in an onsite concrete production plant.

Decommissioning of old oil rigs is expected to provide some 100,000 tonnes of scrap steel yearly, which will be recycled in a £300 million ‘green’ steel mill utilising an electric arc furnace powered by renewable energy, the UK’s first new steel mill in half a century. The recycled steel produced will be used as reinforcement for concrete floating wind foundations. The entire scheme will contribute substantially to an offshore wind market which is predicted to deliver 29,000 jobs and £43.6 billion to the UK economy by 2050. “At Ardersier we can lead the UK’s Green Industrial Revolution by using circular eceonomy practices to deliver new low carbon infrastructure built on the byproducts of our oil and gas past”, said Ardersier Port owner Steve Regan.

WORLD’S FIRST INLINE ACTIVE HEAVE COMPENSATOR With 62 hours of rigorous offshore testing, tech scale-up Seaqualize successfully completed offshore trials for its inline Active Heave Compensator (iAHC), the ‘Delta600’ Together with testing partners Van Oord and nautical research institute MARIN, the offshore lifting tool was tested for fixed-to-floating, floating-to-fixed and floatingto-floating transfers of 300mT loads. The Delta600 is now DNV certified and ready for work. Seaqualize started developing the world’s first iAHC: a tool specifically designed for heavy lift, in-air load control in late 2019. The tool can balance and transfer loads of up to 600mT in mid-air, while the barge or crane vessel is heaving up and down in heavy seas of up to Hs2.5m. INCREASED UPTIME This functionality is of great benefit during offshore wind turbine installations or when lifting delicate loads to and from floating supply vessels or barges. By engaging the Delta, the operational time for installation contractors greatly increases, especially in the hard-to-work winter, autumn or spring seasons. It offers contractors greater planning flexibility, and lifting crew a higher level of control, safety and efficiency. With the worldwide increase in demand in the offshore wind sector, increased capacity and efficiency is greatly needed. In the wider offshore community, perfectly controlled lifts are equally essential to safe, timely and efficient operations.

The offshore tests showed that the unique technology in the Delta will enable controlled offshore lifts during challenging feeder barge operations

‘‘

During the trials, the Delta600 lifted a test weight to and from the floating supply vessel REM Trader, using Van Oord’s jack-up crane vessel Aeolus in both jacked and floating configuration. These floating-to-floating and floating-to-fixed lifts were operational tests of typical challenges in the offshore wind industry: installing turbine components using a floating vessel, or picking up components from a floating supply vessel. Such ’feeder barge’ operations are essential in for example the US wind market. Transferring the most delicate parts of a wind turbine offshore is new to the market, and such operations comprise demanding lifting conditions and a new set of tools. Wouter Dirks, Innovation Manager at Van Oord said: “The offshore tests showed that the unique technology in the Delta will enable controlled offshore lifts during challenging feeder barge operations”. 5CM ENVELOPE During the tests, several very gentle set downs and quick liftoffs were performed. MARIN observed that the tool is able to control the load within an envelope of 5cm, with minimal accelerations and dynamic crane forces. Liftoffs where performed with a solid 90% of the load already in the hook of

the crane before liftoff, while still fully compensating all waves. This significantly reduces impact loads on the load, crane and rigging and results in a controlled and stable liftoff. Finally, the tool showed off its “follow-mode”, where the test weight could actively match all heave motions of the target vessel, to further minimize set-down impact for floating to floating set downs. This offshore trial was also the last step in full DNV product certification as a standard offshore lifting tool. The research project was executed with a grant from the Ministry of Economic affairs of the Netherlands, and included Dutch research agency TNO besides the offshore testing partners MARIN, Van Oord Offshore Wind and Seaqualize.

8 The world’s first inline Active Heave Compensator (Delta600)

NEXT STEPS 600mT Lifting may seem like a lot (e.g. it’s equivalent to 3 Boeing 747’s), but offshore wind turbine sizes are growing explosively, thus requiring ever bigger lifting tools for still very delicate components. Currently Seaqualize is designing the next version, the Delta1000, equipped for all next generation wind turbine components. Further conceptual improvements include the addition of single lifting points for quick-connect systems, and smart controlled tugger winches for supreme control in the horizontal plane. At the same time, the company will further develop its offshore operational support capabilities, by deploying the Delta600 in the field.

TECHNOLOGY FOCUS AT LEAA There’s a new chair for the The Lifting Equipment Engineers Association who is technology focused. Kat Moss will succeed Richard Money as chair of The Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) in January 2022 having been a member of the Board for almost six years. “Covid has made us do things in different ways and has, to a certain extent, brought forward LEEA’s digitalisation plans,” said Ms Moss, who cites technology and a general modern approach to operations as key principles she wants to promote. “We need to ensure this continues. We have transitioned from the traditional face-to face, in-person meetings to new forms of communication. Those who may have questioned ‘doing a Zoom meeting’ prior to the pandemic are so much more open to the possibilities offered by

the technology, to the point where in person meetings now need to be justified.” ”Digitalisation is also spreading into LEEA’s courses and audits. We have lots of individual projects for which I’ve been at the start of the ideas process. I want to focus on their delivery and keep them on track for the next 2-years.” While Covid has undoubtedly been the biggest trend for members globally, UK LEEA members have also been contending with Brexit. “They need LEEA’s support in terms of explaining how relevant standards are being changed and tweeked. The Association’s technical team has put a great deal of effort into ensuring they are visible and accessible to members and are looking at these issues with a LEEA and UK perspective. I am pleased that LEEA has been active in taking measures to tackle issues created by both Covid and Brexit,” Ms Moss said.

Away from Covid and Brexit, Ms Moss has been the driving force behind the Lifting Equipment Technician apprenticeship. She said that the LEEA is looking to target those leaving school with some good observational skills and a hands on attitude who can be tailored for an industry that is “unfortunately too often overlooked but is nevertheless massive.” Recruitment is one of those challenges lifting shares with other sectors and every company in every territory wants solutions, so Ms Moss said that the experience with the apprenticeship scheme in England can inform similar programmes in other territories including Scotland and Australia. This is a priority for LEEA’s recently established Regional Council in Australia and New Zealand, part of LEEA’s strategy to be come more global through devolved management. Ms Moss started out as Business Development & QA Manager at Catena Inspection and Engineering Services on a week’s hire in administration back in 2010. Oliver Auston will take Ms Moss’s previous role of Vice Chair.
