In July 2021 Safehaven Marine, well known Irish boat builders of all-weather pilot and patrol vessels set a third over 50ft UIM World speed Record in their XSV20 Thunder Child II. Ireland to Iceland, which involved a challenging 562nm crossing of the often inhospitable North Atlantic. At 3am on the 8th July they crossed the start line in Killybegs, Ireland, refuelling in the Outer Hebrides and the island of Vestmannaeyjabaer, Iceland before crossing the finish line in Reykjavik. The voyage was completed in 32hrs at an average speed underway of just over 30kts, with a maximum speed of 50kts recorded during the run. They then voyaged North to cross the Arctic Circle before encountering the sea ice edge, as seen on this

month’s cover, as they headed for the Blosseville coast of Greenland. Leaving Thunder Child II in Reykjavik, Skipper Frank Kowalski, MD of Safehaven Marine and designer of XSV20 returned in August to attempt an unofficial record to cross the notorious Denmark Straits to the remote settlement of Tasiilaq in East Greenland. A 450nm voyage not without an element of danger as it involved dodging Icebergs and growlers, as well as at times navigating through the heavy fog prevalent in the Straits as they closed the Greenland coast again. Eventually returning home to Ireland via the Faroe Islands having voyaged 4,000nm in total, the trip was a fine testimony to the capabilities and reliability of Safehaven Marine’s vessels. 8 Find out more at: www.safehavenmarine.com

HIGH-TECH FOILING WORKBOAT COMPANY OPENS NEW FACILITY Artemis Technologies has opened a new facility on Belfast Lough as it prepares to commence testing of its transformative new Artemis eFoiler(R) electric propulsion system. The 42,200 sq ft facility in Titanic Quarter’s Channel Commercial Park, will house the company’s manufacturing and engineering teams as it brings to market a range of green technologies and vessels including workboats, passenger ferries, leisure craft, as well as Crew Transfer Vessels for the offshore wind sector. The first test vessel to be powered by Artemis Technologies’ revolutionary Artemis eFoiler(R) electric propulsion system, an 11m workboat, is expected to take to the water in a matter of weeks. Artemis Technologies Technical Director, Romain Ingouf commented: “The Queen’s Island facility is going to allow us to turn our prototyping activities into a production line for the Artemis eFoiler(R) propulsion system. Over the next year or so we’ll need to double our workforce to support this activity. We currently have two vessels
here, our first Artemis eFoiler(R) propelled prototype, an 11m workboat, as well as an 11m sister ship, enabling us to bench mark our green propulsion system against a conventional gasoline propelled vessel.” The development of the vessels is complemented by Artemis Technologies’ advanced simulator located at its Lisburn facility, which informs the design process pre-build to ensure a streamlined and efficient manufacturing project. Established in 2017, Artemis Technologies is the lead partner

MAKING THE MOST OF MARITIME FUNDING A new service is launching in the North West to help organisations make the most of funding opportunities in the UK’s maritime sector. The government is setting ambitious targets to decarbonise the UK’s maritime economy, but many smaller firms say they are confused about how to make the most out of these opportunities. Regional cluster organisation, Mersey Maritime, is therefore launching a pilot project called ‘Innovating Maritime’, led by Dr Matt Fulton from the University of Liverpool, to point companies towards sources of funding, expert support and end users. “There is a significant amount of work that is already taking place to transform our industry into a low carbon and digital

powerhouse but what is clear is how companies of all sizes feel confused and bewildered about how they can be part of this transformation,” said Mersey Maritime chief executive, Chris Shirling-Rooke. As part of Dr Fulton’s new role as chief innovation officer, he will focus on delivering five key regional projects of national
significance; give advice and support on developing innovation projects; maximise funding opportunities; lead the Mersey Maritime Technology and Innovation Forum and represent Mersey Maritime on the national Maritime UK Technology and Innovation Group. Dr Fulton said it was the maritime sector was currently undergoing an ‘innovation renaissance’. “The unique challenges and opportunities offered by digitalisation and artificial intelligence gives huge scope for us to make a tangible difference, increasing efficiency, investment and jobs whilst reducing our impact on the environment,” he said. The new service will be free to Mersey Maritime members.

CLEANER WASTE COLLECTION A waste service ship working for one European port is to be converted to hybrid power driving down emissions. Converting the Northern Skagerrak ship, which has been cotracted to service the Port of Gothenburg, will save around 680 tonnes of carbon dioxide. “We are a company that is very much at the forefront in developing innovative solutions. We are grateful once again to be entrusted with the task of working with the Port of Gothenburg on a project that will result in an improved environment in the Gothenburg area,” said David Kristensson, group CEO at Northern Energy & Supply. CLEANER SERVICE Following its conversion, Northern Skagerrak will be used to collect oily engine room waste, known as sludge, from ships arriving at the Port of Gothenburg. The Gothenburg Port Authority procured the service from Northern Energy & Supply and the service ship will begin operating during the second quarter of 2022. The vessel will run mostly using electric power although there will also be an auxiliary engine that runs on the renewable fuel HVO. When the invitation to tender for sludge collection was issued, the Port of Gothenburg climate objectives were used as a starting point in the evaluation model. A new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Register that will help the maritime industry embrace AI technology advances is the first of its kind for the maritime industry. The Lloyd’s Register AI Register is a standardised digital register of LR-certified AI providers and solutions that signposts proven and reliable AI technology, helping maritime stakeholders benefit from the latest applications. Luis Benito, director of innovation at LR, said: “Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence has meant maritime has seen an increase in different AI applications, yet, there is a lack of information and guidance
Carbon emission mitigation was one of the quality criteria applied when assessing potential service providers. Following collation and evaluation, the poprt said that the Northern Energy & Supply fossil-free solution proved to be the best option. “Our aim at the Gothenburg Port Authority is to reduce carbon emissions at the port by 70% by 2030. Northern Skagerrak will serve around 6,000 incoming ships each year and the conversion to hybrid operation will be a significant step in the right direction,” said Erik Waller,

Deputy Harbour Master at the Gothenburg Port Authority. All ports in Sweden are obliged to receive sludge from ships arriving at the port. During operation, the vessels accumulate sludge, which is essentially wastewater containing a mixture of oil residue, cleaning agents and solvents. The ships leave the wastewater to the port, then it is transported to a purification plant where oil and heavy-metal contaminants are separated from the water.

PIONEERING AI REGISTER around these potential solutions and providers, meaning maritime stakeholders run the risk of investing in untested technology.” FINDING THE BEST SOLUTIONS The AI Register will assist maritime stakeholders in finding appropriate providers and solutions for business challenges, minimising the risk and cost of investing in AI technology. AI providers can also use the Register to assess existing technology and solutions from the market. Each AI solution entered into the LR AI Register will be categorised against their LR certification status, such as
Digital Twin Ready, Digital Twin Approved, Digital Twin Commissioned and Digital Twin Live from LR’s ShipRight Digital Compliance framework. The AI Register will also provide details about what the specific solution offers, such as key business benefits, target applications, functions, and performance. The AI providers currently listed in LR’s AI Register include Furuno, HAT Analytics, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and ZhenDui Industrial Artificial Intelligence (ZDIAI).

PROFILE
NEIL GORDON
Global Underwater Hub According to Neil Gordon, chief executive of the Global Underwater Hub, Monday 17th January was a day of celebration for the whole subsea supply chain, especially in Scotland. Neil was appointed chief executive of the subsea industry body in 2011. During this time, he has effectively led the self-sustaining organisation through both its most challenging and most successful periods. Neil reminds us that Monday the 17th was that critical day the ScotWind licencing round for offshore wind projects was announced with provision for significantly more GW than anticipated: “Scotland’s net-zero goals and those companies whose bids have been successful are not the only winners. The supply chain is also a crucial beneficiary as these developments are brought forward. The subsea supply chain in particular has a significant prize to go after in terms of the offshore floating wind segment.” Much has been said about the failure of the UK to secure local content in fixed wind but, according to Neil, there will be no excuse for not capitalising on offshore floating wind where;
“as a nation, we have one of the world’s most highly recognised underwater sectors which has the expertise, experience, technology and skills to develop, install, operate and maintain offshore floating wind projects.” Recognising that Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire is home to the largest concentration of subsea businesses, the Energy Transition Zone (ETZ) will also be home to a brand new Floating Offshore Wind Technology Centre, harnessing first mover advantage through subsea engineering credentials that will accelerate the development of the technology required to maximise the significant floating offshore wind opportunity. Neil argues that Subsea technologies in areas such as floating foundation systems, mooring and anchoring systems as well as dynamic power cables are recognised areas of expertise that will be required but there will other technologies and high-value manufacturing aspects that will come to light in the coming months and years as these major developments take shape. “But it will be key for the UK and Scottish
governments to know how to support the industrial investment needed to ensure the UK supply chain meets the ambition and also hold to account the pledges made by the bidders.” The public announcements from many of the consortia involved already indicate a bonanza for the supply chain, says Neil. “Hopes are high that the lease process will see developers make good on these pledges through early engagement with the supply chain. Indeed, bidders will have to prepare Supply Chain Development Statements which will outline where their expenditure will be spent.” Under Neil’s leadership at GUH, the subsea industry has transitioned from being seen as a sub-sector of oil and gas to becoming a stand-alone industry operating in diverse sectors, including offshore wind, marine renewables, defence, ocean science, subsea mining, and aquaculture. However, the extent to which the supply chain could be used will also depend on its ability to adapt to provide services to the newer ‘kids on the block’ such as the floating wind market.

SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT TOOL A new online tool develops a self-assessment score for marine contracting companies to measure their progress against other contractors. The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has launched the new online tool to enable Members to track their progress against Environmental Sustainability expectations in their Recommended Code of Practice launched last year. The tool, which has been developed for IMCA Members’ internal use, presents their self-assessment score and, once sufficient submissions have been made by other IMCA Members, a comparison with other users’ outcomes is given. Nadine Robinson, IMCA’s Technical Adviser for Environmental Sustainability explained:
8 Nadine Robinson, IMCA’s Technical Adviser for Environmental Sustainability
“The online self-assessment tool enables us, individually and collectively, to reflect on how IMCA Member companies and we, as the offshore marine contracting industry, are addressing the
material environment and climaterelated topics identified in our Recommended Code of Practice. I am excited to see how far we have come as an industry since the Code’s publication in May 2021 and to measure our progress over the next year or two.” “We recognise that Members are at a differing stages of their environmental sustainability journey, which is why we have worked hard to develop a facility that encourages members to share their progress, without judgment. In participating in the initiative, they will also be able gain insights on how they are doing relative to their industry peers, while being assured that their own data is only visible within their company.” The self-assessment tool is available to Member companies on IMCA’s website

FOUR PLATFORM DECOMMISSIONING CONTRACT Petrogas E&P Netherlands B.V. (a part of Petrogas E&P LLC, headquartered in Muscat, Oman) has awarded Heerema an integrated engineering, preparation, removal, and disposal (EPRD) decommissioning contract for multiple North Sea oil platforms. The work involves removing the Haven, Hoorn, Helm, and Helder platforms from Block Q1
of the Dutch sector in the southern North Sea. The execution of the offshore removals will take place over several years. Over the last 40 years, the platforms have been important contributors to the Dutch oil and gas industry, with the Helm platform being the first to produce oil on the Dutch
continental shelf for the Dutch market, starting production in October 1982. Their removal is the final stage in a key part of the Netherlands’ energy history. Heerema has been working in the decommissioning sector for over 30 years and brings expert knowledge and innovative technology to ensure the predictable removal of offshore infrastructure.

LOW CARBON BEACH REPLENISHMENT AT OSTEND Trailing suction hopper dredger Alexander von Humboldt will bring some 600,000 cubic metres of dredged sand to Belgium’s Ostend beach, running on sustainable drop-in biofuel Jan De Nul’s dredger will run on 100% sustainable drop-in biofuel, thus reducing CO2 emissions by 90%. The bulldozers and excavators on the beach are equipped with advanced exhaust gas filter systems that reduce the emission of fine dust and nitrogen by 80%. The site offices for the project management team are of the latest generation, equipped with well-insulated materials and a heat pump, which also reduces the energy consumption by 80%. For this contract, environmental impact was an important award criterion, given MDK’s long-term vision on coastal protection: Flanders must prepare today for the consequences of climate change by strengthening the coasts and at the same time reducing the causes to the maximum extent possible.
With our tender as well as the execution of this contract, we show that we are ready for the future and can dredge and replenish in a sustainable way
‘‘
Bart Praet, Head of Dredging Department Benelux at Jan De Nul Group said: “In 2019, we led the way in our sector by having a 15% CO2 reduction requirement included in Flemish dredging contracts by 2022. With our tender as well as the execution of this contract, we show that we are ready for the future and can dredge and replenish in a sustainable way. We show other clients that these measures are feasible and affordable. If we want to protect ourselves against rising sea levels in the long term, we must act now. The reduction of emissions simply cannot be optional anymore.”
The dredger Alexander von Humboldt will be moored in the port of Ostend and will pump the dredged sand to the beach via a floating pipeline. This will allow a faster completion of the works, as the dredger will be able to work continuously. Because it is working within the sheltered harbour area, the vessel does not have to wait for high tide to access the coast. The execution time can therefore be shortened from 6 weeks to 5 weeks. Each seven hours, the Alexander von Humboldt will supply sand over a 1.5 km section of beach, starting at the western harbour dam and moving on towards Thermae Palace.

COMBINING SWATH BATHYMETRY AND SIDE SCAN SONAR A specialist in high resolution sonar imaging systems and underwater technology, has recently introduced a new combined swath bathymetry & side scan sonar system
8 EdgeTech 6205s2 Combined Swath Bathymetry & Side Scan Sonar System
Following the success of the popular 6205 and 6205s systems, US company EdgeTech says it has redesigned the 6205s2 and achieved a more compact and lighter package with additional features and benefits including the options for an integrated INS, the higher resolution frequency pair of 850/1600 kHz, and EdgeTech’s gap-fill side scan output. The EdgeTech 6205s2 produces real time, high resolution, three dimensional maps of the seafloor while providing an enhanced and fully integrated swath bathymetry and dual frequency side scan sonar system. The new system is claimed to be unrivalled in its swath coverage in shallow water when compared to other single head bathymetry-only systems. The
system offers co-registered dual frequency side scan and bathymetry with swath coverages up to 200° with a selection of equidistant and equiangle output options. Additionally, the 6205s2 is the only bathymetry system to now offer EdgeTech’s motion tolerant side scan sonar feature for operation in more adverse weather conditions. The new 6205s2 is ideally suited to compact USV (unmanned surface vehicles) projects, especially those looking to achieve bathymetry, side scan and sub bottom profiler datasets with a single data-pass. Additionally, according to EdgeTech, the data outputs of the 6205s2 are accepted by most third-party acquisition and post processing software packages.

Damen introduces ASD 2312 tug simulator Dutch shipbuilder Damen has teamed up with Force Technology to develop a simulator for one of its popular tug designs at simulator centres and in the Cloud environment. Tug simulators are now widely employed as a cost-effective means of training crews in a safe environment exploring various situations while avoiding potential risks involved in real time, real world activities. Part of the process of procuring a new tug can involve owners and their representatives flying to shipyards to assess various designs and try them out in real time prior to or during the acquisition process. As the effects of lockdown and travel restrictions from Covid has put severe restrictions on such activities, Damen has identified another way of achieving this remotely and together with Force Technology developed the latter’s

SimFlex simulator model for the ASD 2312 Tug for use in simulator centres globally and with the SimFlex Cloud. Denmark-based Force Technology’s global coverage and its “highly respected reputation” in the maritime industry was an attraction for Damen who mention travel restrictions in countries such as Australia and New Zealand as a reason for designing an
ASD 2312 simulator model, Bastin Kubbe, Damen regional service manager Asia Pacific commenting: “We want to enable our customers to thoroughly test our vessels in an accessible manner prior to or during the acquisition process. Simulations can assist customers when deciding on the tug type they require, but they are equally important after an acquisition when the simulator can be used for training purposes for existing and new customers.” Force Technology already has several Damen vessels in its simulator portfolio using advanced modelling techniques including data from sea trials and physical model tests derived from its own towing tank and wind tunnel test facilities with mathematical ship models responding exactly like actual vessels to ensure realistic environments in its own and its clients’ training facilities.

SCHOTTEL TO POWER ALL-ELECTRIC TUG eWolf As Master Boat Builders begins construction of eWolf Schottel has reported it will supply the propulsion systems for what will be US’s first all-electric shiphandling tug. While hybrid and alternative-fuel el tugs are becoming increasingly common in the quest for greater efficiencies and cleaner operations, some operating profiles open the possibility ossibility of employing all-electric tugs and while e a handful are currently listed in Europe and beyond, yond, this US reference introduces a new geographical aphical region for all-electric tugs. German propulsion manufacturer Schottel chottel has announced that as part of the e eWolf package it will supply two RudderPropeller Propeller type SRP 430 thrusters featuring the he LEDrive (Embedded L-Drive) and MariHub ub – the data Internet of Things (IoT) gateway ay and its monitoring solution. The e thrusters will each supply 2,050kW off power via 2.5m diameter propellerss developing a bollard pull of 70 short tonnes. The SRP 430 LE thruster features a compact design with an n extremely low installation height forr the LE-Drive while the omission of the e upper gearbox increases mechanical cal efficiency by around three percent and d at the same time reduces fuel consumption. eWolf’s 6MWh energy storage system will provide sufficient capacity for one full day of normal work without using any fuel, the batteries supplying power to the
pr propulsion systems “almost instantly.” The tu tug’s systems are designed for fastch changing load requirements and two onbo board generators will be provided for em emergency use and to enable longer transit llegs at reduced speed. Schottel’s MariHub IoT gateway and monitoring solution will record and analyse signals from sensors, machinery and other components to be certified by Schot Schottel technicians. Along with ProCMS (conditio (condition monitoring system) MariHub allows early detection o of irregularities in the propulsion system, a predictive maintenance approach that will “significantly “significan increase” the availability of the vessel. Construction Co of eWolf is underway at Master Boat Bo Builders shipyard in Coden, Alabama for US operator Crowley with completion scheduled sc for mid-2023 whereafter it will operate op at Port of San Diego, California, Garrett Rice, president Master Boat Builders stating: “Today is also a a remarkable milestone for the entire US maritime industry in as we work toward providing ground breaking net ne zero-emission maritime capabilities.” eWolf is designed by Crowley Engineering Services and the tug will allow fully-electric operation while maintaining full performance capabilities with an integrated electrical package provided by Switzerland-based automation company ABB.

Svitzer and Robert Allan Ltd have presented a new tug design to be built by Sanmar Shipyards that will be the model for Svitzer’s carbon neutral methanol fuel cell tug. Svitzer recently announced that together with parent company A.P. Moller Maersk and naval architect Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) it was to develop the world’s first methanol fuel cell tug (see MJ January 2022). Details of the vessel, including a new RAL model designation have been unveiled along with the announcement that Turkey’s Sanmar Shipyards will build the vessel. Following RAL’s pattern of including ‘RA’ in its design name, the towing industry has been introduced to the TRAnsverse Tug. It is another break from the ASD or thruster forwards tractor configuration in adopting an in-line thruster arrangement based on an omnidirectional hull form. Svitzer’s example will join a small number of similar tugs gathering

favour including the Giano Tug, Holland Shipyards Group’s Eddy Tug and Novatug’s Carrousel RAve Tug (two of which are operated by Multraship Towage & Salvage). The design has other notable features including what Svitzer calls a “unique towing arrangement” and an innovative staple design along with the Svitzer Catcher and other equipment to automate operational elements. Impressions of the TRAnsverse
Tug design illustrate the omni-directional hull with a raised forecastle, accommodation approximately midships and a large semi-enclosure for the winch ‘aft’ which also houses the Svitzer Catcher. Svitzer states the TRAnsverse tug will be able to generate higher steering forces than most designs of similar dimensions, able to push pull and manoeuvre in all directions “all neatly wrapped in a smaller and nimbler tugboat.” The TRAnsverse Tug is scalable and suitable for all types of harbour and terminal towage operations and delivery of the first example from Sanmar Shipyards is expected in Q3 2023. James R. Hyslop, manager, project development, Robert Allan Ltd, said: “. Integrating all these technologies into one vessel has never been done before and it was a real challenge to do it in a way that is safe, functional, and economic.”

HISTORIC FUEL REMOVAL TASK FOR RESOLVE
US-based salvor Resolve Marine has recovered fuel oil from a tanker sunk by a German submarine nearly 80 years ago, 70 miles off Florida. A marine archeological survey established that what had been thought to be the tanker Munger T Ball was in fact the Joseph M Cudahy, another tanker sunk by a German U boat. In an operation lasting 40 days, Resolve employed divers, marine archeologists, a work class ROV and technicians to remove 35,000 gallons of heavy oil from multiple tanks. The operation followed a similar hot-tap fuel removal task for Resolve earlier in 2021 for the Canadian Coast Guard off the west coast of Canada, another example of an historic wreck that has retained fuel, presenting potential pollution risks as it deteriorates (see MJ September 2021). Another wreck removal operation has been completed by Resolve, contracted by a London-based P&I Club for the general cargo vessel Cdry Blue which had grounded on the south coast of Sardinia. Resolve’s crane barge RMG 20 was towed to the site from its base in Gibraltar by the tug Resolve Hercules and using a combination of the crane barge, chain pullers and lift bags Cdry Blue
along with associated debris was removed from the area. Another operation in the same region saw Resolve assist a loaded container vessel that grounded while moving anchorages in the Suez Canal. An inspection by a Resolve salvage team flown in from the Netherlands, including by divers determined that cargo needed to be removed to facilitate refloating and after a salvage plan was developed and approved by the Suez authorities the vessel was refloated by two local tugs. A potentially major vessel casualty and pollution situation was averted late in 2021 when a container ship transiting the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Vancouver Island
8 Resolve Hercules assisted in a wreck removal operation off Sardinia
experienced heavy weather resulting in the loss of and shifting of several containers. A subsequent fire among the shifting boxes threatened to escalate an already dangerous situation and Resolve was contracted by the vessel’s owners and their insurers with three firefighting tugs tasked to assist along with the salvor’s firefighting team based in Seattle and pumps from its Seattle and San Francisco response depots. The efforts of all concerned were successful and after the cargo was stabilised the vessel was able to proceed to a container terminal for discharging.

8 Abeille Liberté was on hand to avert a potential pollution disaster off the French coast
SALVAGE ROUND-UP A sunken fishing vessel in Norway, disabled tanker in the Western Approaches and an oil spill in Chile, incidents requiring the attention of the professional salvage industry. A complex wreck removal project has been completed by Scaldis Salvage after a 65m fishing vessel sank following a fire while alongside at Tromsø in Northern Norway. The crew were safely evacuated and the vessel settled on the seabed, its starboard side above the waterline. Scaldis was contracted to recover the 1,800t vessel and the Antwerp-based salvor’s heavylift vessel Gulliver was mobilised from Flushing to Grøtsund in the Arctic Circle to prepare the rigging. Its lifting chains were installed around the wreck’s hull by raising the vessel’s stern with the main lifting blocks while simultaneously using both auxiliaries to install the chains. The wreck was lifted and moved to deeper water where after bringing it upright through parbuckling was lowered, patches applied until it was watertight and lowered further until the vessel was floating again.

Memories of previous disasters would have been at the forefront of the minds of French maritime authorities when the bulk carrier TBC Progress, laden with 15,000t of grain experienced propulsion problems in storm force 10 conditions, 25nm off Cap de la Hague. Les Abeilles emergency towing vessel Abeille Liberté was tasked under LOF with an assessment and response team along with towing crew placed on board by helicopter. If ever the value of readily available ETVs was to be proved it was here where TBC Progress was taken under tow just three miles from the coast avoiding grounding with certain total loss and substantial pollution. The vessel was redelivered to owners in Le Havre, Les Abeilles modestly stating: “It’s been a tough one.” CPT Remolcadores has reported deploying its oil spill emergency response teams after the 14m Algarrobo “had an accident” causing it to sink in Puerto Montt, Chile. The Chilean response company was tasked to contain the spill of hydrocarbons and in an operation over 30 days successfully controlled contamination

8 Boskalis has published a book describing the efforts of subsidiary Smit Salvage with refloating the container ship Ever Given in the Suez Canal. Salvage companies are sometimes shy in reporting details of what are often difficult and dangerous operations that save lives, protect property and preserve the environment, so the book The Salvage of the Ever Given must be welcomed. It was prompted by the global media attention and request for information following the grounding and the 80 page book is a behind-the-scenes look at the incident. Generously worded, well-illustrated with photos not seen previously, and reasonably priced it is in Dutch or English and can be ordered through the Boskalis webshop https://shop.boskalis.com/books

RECORD GROWTH FOR OFFSHORE WIND There’s record capacity growth for offshore wind as it continues to play a vital role in global energy transition
INDUSTRY INTELLIGENCE Mr Gordon said that China led the way for new capacity additions and overtook the UK as the largest offshore wind market, with 16 GW coming online, mostly in the final two months of the year, ahead of the expiry of a government subsidy deadline at the end of the year. New capacity additions were more modest in Europe, as 1.8 GW was fully commissioned, with 17 GW currently under development in the region. . In addition, offshore wind project CAPEX commitments reached US$44.6bn in 2021, the second highest total on record, with a number of significant projects reaching FID, including the first utility scale offshore wind project in the US - Vineyard Wind. In Europe alone, US$18.7bn of project CAPEX was committed to offshore wind projects, compared to the US$10.3bn committed to offshore oil and gas projects. The wind vessel market also continued to evolve, reaching nearly 1,100 vessels by year end. Global WTIV utilisation averaged 83% in the year, while exceptional demand for vessels off China consistently kept utilisation over 90% in the second half of the year. Rates responded, with the average dayrate assessment for thirrd generation WTIVs in Europe up 18% across the year

Research released by the data analyse firm Clarksons Research shows 2021 saw record start-ups for the industry (84 farms, 18.5 GW, 3,400 turbines) increasing global active capacity by 58% to an all time high of 50.5 GW. ”This takes offshore wind to approximately 0.3% of total global energy supply: our energy transition modelling suggests this could reach 6-9% by 2050 and generate 4,870 TWh to 5,990 TWh of power,” said Steve Gordon, managing director of Clarksons Research.
8 The year 2021 was another record year for the sector both for capacity and vessel demand
besides increases in the C/SOV market also. Dayrates reportedly quadrupled off Guangdong in China in the middle of the year. Record newbuild investment developed during 2021, with over US$4bn of orders placed and increasing focus on alternative fuels and energy saving technologies. This included over 17 WTIV newbuild contracts placed totalling US$2.5bn, the highest yearly total on record. Fifteen C/SOVs were ordered totalling US$0.8bn, also the highest number on record.
WTIV for fast-growing US wind market Friede & Goldman has announced that the classification society, American Bureau of Shipping has granted Approval in Principle for its wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) BargeRack technology. F&G is keen on contributing its expertise and technologies to further advance and accelerate the development of US offshore wind. F&G believes its BargeRack technology is a superior feeder vessel solution. Typical feeder vessels are inherently risky due to motions during turbine equipment handling. Building upon F&G’s jack-up expertise, F&G engineers created a new WTIV design that

completely eliminates feeder vessel motions, resulting in safe and simple turbine installation. F&G’s BargeRack
technology also reduces feeder vessel cost by an order of magnitude compared to other feeder solutions. In recent years, F&G has been applying their knowledge and technology from the over 120 F&G built oil-field jack-up rigs to the offshore wind industry. This technology includes their robust leg design, leg wear extended life cycle, easily accessible jacking pinions for in-service maintenance, fully automatic lubrication systems, wear compensating guide systems, afloat spud can inspection & maintenance, etc. – all designed to reduce downtime and increase productivity

IRONMAN TEST FOR WAVE CONVERTER
A commercial scale Wave Energy Converter will undergo intensive ’Ironman’ testing ahead of ocean deployment, The Ironman testing will put CorPower Ocean’s next-generation C4 WEC into two weeks of continuous operation on the world’s largest wave energy test rig in Sweden. ”We are excited to proceed to the final stage of our comprehensive dry-test campaign,” said Antoine Baudoin, CorPower Project lead. “In particular, we will be monitoring how the air characteristic changes within the pretension cylinders as they elevate in temperature, in order to better manage high thermal stress and maximise performance.” FINE TUNING Rigorous tests will involve exposure to all sea states including severe storm conditions in order to monitor its durability and unique ‘survival mode’, alongside high thermal stress. It will allow further interrogation of CorPower’s novel WaveSpring technology which works in resonance with waves to enhance motion amplitude and energy generation.
26 | FEBRUARY 2022
Allowing time for minor upgrades, the WEC is then set to be transported to northern Portugal taking a central role in CorPower’s flagship HiWave-5 demonstration project. Mr Baudoin said the Ironman testing follows two months of initial testing in 2021 which produced highly valuable data informing recent upgrades to debug, stabilise and fine-tune the machine. The 45-tonne test rig, located at CorPower’s Stockholm headquarters, is capable of simulating ocean wave conditions anywhere in the world. Measuring 40m in length and 9m in width, the design, build and accreditation was supported by ABB. “The testing infrastructure we required simply didn’t exist beforehand, so we built and accredited the world’s largest wave energy test

Crane order Huisman has announced the signing of a contract with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) for delivery of another 2,600mt Leg Encircling Crane (LEC). This follows a previous order, in July last year, for a similar crane. This crane will be installed on the second Wind Turbine Installation Vessel ordered by Eneti and constructed by DSME. The LEC will be outfitted with a 155m boom, which – similar to the first crane – was extended to reach an unparalleled lifting height of 174m above deck. This brings the hook height to approx. 215m above LAT. This, combined with its 2,600mt lifting capacity, gives the crane a degree of future-proofing, preparing it for handling the next generation of wind turbines.

VESSEL LAUNCHES
FULLY ELECTRIC PASSENGER FERRY ENTERS SERVICE Research by the New Zealand Government has found that domestic ships such as ferries and freighters emit close to 300,000 tons of CO2 every year. In Wellington, nearly 50% of the city’s emissions were produced from the transportation sector in 2020. With the local council committing to becoming a net-zero-carbon city by 2050, introducing alternative energy forms of transportation is crucial. Built by the Wellington Electric Boat Building Company, the 19-metre Ika Rere ferry can carry up to 132 passengers on journeys across Wellington Harbour at an operational speed of 20 knots. It has been designed and built to complete one return run of 25 kilometres before charging dockside at a rate of one megawatt for 15 minutes while passengers disembark and board. The ferry will be charged from a 300-kilowatt charger at its overnight berth during its first year of operation. It is anticipated that the Ika Rere ferry will save approximately 640 tons of CO2 annually compared to a similar-sized diesel alternative. Leading New Zealand electrical company McKay acted as the project’s lead electrical designer and system integrator, choosing one of Danfoss’ Editron drivetrain systems to power the ferry. The system consists of two propulsion motors, two grid solutions for the AC network and six DC/DC converters connected to the vessel’s batteries. All of these components operate via a DC cabinet and are controlled via an electronic control system. Erno Tenhunen, marine director of Danfoss’ Editron division, said: “As companies, cities and countries around the world continue to set CO2 reduction targets, the demand for

zero-emission vessels and machines continues to grow. Our Editron marine system provides outstanding efficiencies within a power range of up to six megawatts. It is also compact and lightweight, enabling space and weight savings and increasing design freedom. These savings ultimately benefit passengers, as operators can provide a greater level of comfort.” Jeremy Ward, managing director of East by West Ferries, added: “While Ika Rere has cost more than an equivalent-sized diesel boat, we will make savings back over time thanks to its cheaper running costs. The ferry’s electric motors, provided by Danfoss’ Editron division, require less maintenance than traditional diesel versions. The cost of charging the vessel’s batteries is also significantly less than filling it up with diesel.” The Ika Rere is currently undergoing sea trials.

PRIVATE 5G NETWORKS IN PORTS According to Neill Young, Business Development Director and Verticals Lead at Blu Wireless, automated ports generate a considerable amount of data Ports also require a reliable and safe telecommunications network. For example, The Port of Felixstowe 5G create project in the UK uses more than 100 cranes to transport containers, some of which can be operated remotely to ensure that they remain under human control while the operators stay in a safe environment. Each connected crane has over 20 high-definition cameras providing data to the control centre and requires low latency, lag-free connection to manoeuvre containers safely. A significant amount of data is also collected and transferred as ports communicate with vessels, requiring robust connectivity and high bandwidth. Data transfer on this scale is challenging using dedicated 5G networks as today’s networks typically only use a small slice of the spectrum, thus quickly hitting the limit and becoming overloaded.
To complement networks already in place, port authorities can implement mmWave to get more flexibility, capacity, and to scale their connectivity. The technology is easy to deploy and can work alongside networks already in place Many ports have a private 5G network in place but operate on a restricted licence that only uses a slice of spectrum. This might be adequate for simple use cases — a location sensor for instance — but when data volumes generated increase as a result of devices such as high-definition cameras, ports are faced with a challenge of scaling their network. They will discover pinch points, says Mr Young, where they need additional bandwidth and capacity, but digging up a port to lay fibre is expensive and disruptive to operations. To tackle these challenges and support more complex use cases utilising high data volumes, a blend of different networks is the recommended approach. To complement networks already in place, port authorities can implement mmWave to get more flexibility, capacity, and
to scale their connectivity. The technology is easy to deploy and can work alongside networks already in place. For example, ports can take advantage of the unlicensed spectrum for backhaul requirements. There is no cost for using the spectrum, and technologically mmWave will provide higher bandwidth and lower latency for backhaul to transfer data across the site to the control centre in a costeffective and efficient way. For port operations, concludes Mr Young, this means improved efficiency, tracking and security across the site and allows operations teams to focus on the quality of service.

DEEPER FAIRWAY DRAUGHTS FOR LOWER AND OUTER ELBE At the Port of Hamburg the final stage of the fairway adjustment has been authorised, enabling vessels to transit the Elbe with more cargo Release of the second stage came on 24 January 2022. This represented achievement of the project target of enabling containerships with a draft of up to 13.50 metres to reach the Port of Hamburg irrespective of the tide. At certain states of tide, even greater drafts are possible. Inbound and outbound shipping now gains from a draft increase of between 1.00 and 1.90 metres. Irrespective of the tide, Megamax vessels with a width of up to 62.5 metres and a length of 400 metres can now move about the port with a draft of up to 13.10 metres. A favourable tide makes 15.40 metres possible.
Statistics already show good market acceptance for the first release of the fairway adjustment. Last year 2,377 containerships called the Port of Hamburg between May and December. Of these, 666 had a design draft of over 13.80 metres
‘‘
“We are delighted that following years of intensive planning, completion of the mega-project ‘fairway adjustment’ has been accomplished. Above all, we should like to express our thanks to our partners and customers, who during many personal discussions have again and again reiterated their faith in the Port of Hamburg. Statistics already show good market acceptance for the first release of the fairway adjustment. Last year 2,377 containerships called the Port of Hamburg between May and December. Of these, 666 had a design draft of over 13.80 metres. And 96 of them had a draft that would not have been acceptable prior to the release of the fairway adjustment. With the final release, we are anticipating further increases,” said Jens Meier, CEO of Hamburg Port Authority.
Additionally HVCC - Hamburg Vessel Coordination Center can now further optimise its Elbe passage planning. This will lead to enhanced safety, on the one hand, further defusing potential conflicts on the Elbe and in the port area. On the other, it will also benefit the environment. Just-in-time arrival during the approach enables many vessels to reduce speed and bunker less fuel, causing lower pollutant emissions. Finally, near Wedel, a passing box has been built, extending for eight kilometres. This enables vessels with a combined width of less than 104 metres to pass each other. The fairway between Wedel and the Stör estuary has been widened from 300 to 320 metres.

PORT, HARBOUR & MARINE CONSTRUCTION The Port of València is getting closer to providing shore power at its docks so that the ships that dock there will produce zero emissions during their stay. The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) has awarded the works of the new electrical substation that will begin to be executed in the coming weeks. Valenciaport is thus making progress in the Spanish Government’s commitment to achieve 100% electrification of its ports by 2030. An objective which, in the case of Valenciaport, goes even further to move from an eco-efficient port to a completely green port by 2030. To this end, in addition to the electrification of the quays, projects such as the use of hydrogen in the port installations, the implementation of photovoltaic panels or the use of wind turbines to obtain electrical energy are being carried out. This commitment is also present in the infrastructures being developed by the PAV, such as the new north container terminal and the passenger terminal, which will be a model of environmental sustainability. Specifically, the PAV has already awarded the construction of the electrical substation to the company Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios for 5,143,487 euros and a completion period of

PORT, HARBOUR & MARINE CONSTRUCTION
CLEVER PORT LOGISTICS Logistics provider Maersk and the Port of Rotterdam Authority will build large cross-dock and cold store at Maasvlakte by 2023. The parties have reached agreement on the issue of a 185,000m2 site at the extreme southern tip of the Prinses Amaliahaven where the 23,000m2 cross dock and a 35,000m2 cold store will be built in 2023. ”The establishment of the cross-dock and the cold store are therefore a logical step towards strengthening our strong position and enabling us to grow further in the port of Rotterdam,” said Jens Ole Krenzien, Vice President Maersk North West Continent. ”Once the cross-dock and the cold store are operational, they will give our clients a lot of added value in the chain. That will allow our clients to respond faster to market fluctuations, reduce their carbon footprint and shorten their lead times. We’ll also be able to help them reduce their safety stock.” LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT A large number of Maersk ships visit the Port of Rotterdam every year and the dock and cold store was much needed. The new store will actively make the operator a tenant of logistical sites. The cross-dock will be used for the shortterm storage of fast-moving consumer goods. Meanwhile, the cold store will be used for the transhipment of a range of agri-food products, including frozen meat, fish, vegetables and fresh fruit. The site in question had already been reserved for container transhipment by APM Terminals, which is affiliated to Maersk. The development of the cross-dock and the cold store will cost around €50 million and will provide employment for 200 people. At the same time in the Prinses Amaliahaven, work is under way on the construction of new deep-sea and inland shipping quays measuring 1,825 and 160 metres, respectively. Container terminals RWG and APM Terminals have already signed options to use the quays and further develop the sites around

£25m IN UNDERWATER CONTRACTS IN SIX MONTHS A Global underwater robotic vehicle company says it is well positioned financially and across all energy sectors as it celebrates its 10th anniversary ROVOP is on a strong growth trajectory after securing contracts valued at £25m in the last six months. The Aberdeen headquartered global business has won a diverse spread of work across offshore energy sectors in Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific and the Americas. The contract wins, along with a financial restructure in 2020, have placed ROVOP in robust financial health with positive cash flow and available working capital to invest in its people, services and its fleet to meet future demand. The new contracts involve dive support, inspection, repair and maintenance (IRM), decommissioning, cable lay and construction surveys for new clients, Prysmian Group and Mermaid Subsea Services Thailand, among others. ROVOP has also renewed existing contracts in the offshore wind sector after investing in its fleet with the addition of two Schilling HD work-class ROVs. Both of which will be deployed on a Scottish wind farm for EDT Offshore. Chief Executive at ROVOP, Neil Potter, said: “Having started out ten years ago focussing on the offshore wind sector and then diversifying into oil and gas, it is fitting that, as we celebrate this milestone of a decade in business, we are reporting major new contracts in renewables. We now have a healthy spread of contracts in offshore energy sectors and geographic locations around the world performing seabed surveys, UXO identification, boulder clearance, construction and cable installation support and IRM. Mr Potter said that, while it’s widely acknowledged that companies operating in oil and gas can transfer their skills into offshore wind and vice versa, it’s not always as straightforward as it appears.
“There are some fundamental differences between the sectors. But with our experience and track-record in renewables, we understand these and know how to adapt our service and technology for each. Oil and gas remain very important to us and crucial to meeting global demand for energy as we transition to cleaner, greener sources.” ROVOP employs 200 people offshore and onshore from bases in Aberdeen and Houston, with additional offices in Dubai, the Netherlands and Singapore.

SHIP & BOATBUILDING Electric ferries contract Two new zero emissions electric ferries will be built for the Riveer ferry service in the Netherlands. Holland Shipyards Group has signed a contract for the vessels, due to be delivered at the end of 2022. ”The fact that these ferries will soon be sailing in front of our own door makes it a great eyecatcher and a great company reference,” said Holland Shipyards director, Leendert Hoogendoorn. This November, Holland Shipyards Group will start building the emission-free ferries which have been designed by Coco Yachts, a Gorinchem-based ship designer.
BUILDING SILENT VESSELS A Spanish engineering firm has acquired new technology to help shipbuilders construct ‘silent’ vessels. Técnicas y Servicios de Ingeniería (TSI) has invested in state-of-the-art technology which enables measurement of exterior noise generated by all types of ships, including underwater radiated noise (URN) and its impact on marine life. TSI said that with this new technology, it will be able to take a leading role in the construction of ‘silent vessels’, becoming a specialist consultant on noise and vibration for shipbuilders in Spain. The technology from noise specialist, Hottinger Brüel & Kjær (HBK), has three HBK sound level meters (Types 2270 and 2260), an OmniPower Sound Source Type 4292, Power Amplifier Type 2734, Sound Intensity Probe Type 3599 and three Type 8104 hydrophones, to tackle the different measurements and tests that are regularly carried out in the development of new build ships. In addition to monitoring environmental effects, the health of staff and the vessels themselves can also be affected by a loud ship. The new technology will help TSI pick up noise which is often an indicator of onboard vibration problems that can lead to equipment and system damage.

SHIP & BOATBUILDING
FOILING HYDROGEN FUEL CELL CHASE BOAT We’re not usually in the habit here at MJ of covering yacht racing chase boats, but when it’s a ground-breaking full foiling, hydrogen powered 50kn boat, it’s a different matter Ever since the America’s Cup moved to 40kn+ foiling race boats, finding suitable chase boats for the teams, race judges etc. that can actually keep up, in comfort, in the often choppy conditions in which the races are held has been something of a challenge, and doing so without burning hundreds of litres of diesel per hour has been doubly so. With that in mind, we hear with interest that Emirates Team New Zealand and Toyota’s prototype hydrogen foiling chase boat for the next chapter of the America’s Cup is in the final stages of a complex fit out prior to its launch in March. The construction of the boat was started in August 2021 at the team’s North Shore build facility, the appendage construction (Foils, drives and rudders) is in its final stages and the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powertrain installation is underway at the team’s base in Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. BOUNDARIES The ETNZ Hydrogen project powered by Toyota has been an important one for Emirates Team New Zealand who, as Defender of the America’s Cup, have committed to driving hydrogen innovation in the marine industry through working with clean technologies. “The Hydrogen project has been a completely new challenge across the board for Emirates Team New Zealand designers, builders and engineers,” said Head of Design Dan Bernasconi. “These types of projects are extremely beneficial to keep the guys pushing the boundaries, continually learning and approaching problems with different perspectives, which all help to keep raising the bar in our design approach to the 37th America’s Cup which is also progressing in parallel.” The prototype foiling boat is 10 metres in length, and approximately 5200kg displacement, the cruising speed will be 30-35 knots with a top speed of around 50 knots and will carry 6 crew members with a range of between 150-180km generating approximately 440kW peak power via a 400V DC system powered by the hydrogen fuel cell. “A project like this is not a straightforward one, and we have had to pull together a wide range of suppliers and components for this prototype boat, parts of which look like something out of Back to the Future,” explains Project Manager Geoff Senior. “Toyota New Zealand and the Toyota Motor Corporation Japan have been a significant part of the project in supplying the 2 x 80kW pre-production Toyota Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Global Bus Ventures have supplied the Hydrogen Powertrain system design and integration and Gurit have been a valuable partner with the composite materials and engineering.” INTEGRATED PROPULSION The four hydrogen storage tanks onboard from Hexagon Purus will store 33kgs of hydrogen gas at 350bar while the propulsion is via a Mercury bottom end propeller which is integrated into the foils. The design of the foil wings by the Emirates Team New Zealand design team was largely based on AC75 technology and the Autopilot which will be used to
control the ride height is ETNZ proprietary technology that will be implemented in the new AC40 boats in production. Michael Rasmussen ETNZ Mechatronics Engineer said, “It is a learning curve for everyone involved, but it always is when we are driving technology into new territory. But with that comes really focused engagement from everyone involved to produce something we hope will reach the objectives we set out to achieve in driving a clean change in the global marine industry from down here in New Zealand. It will be an exciting yet stressful time once we are ready to get it out onto the water and put it to the test, which seems to be the way with every boat Emirates Team New Zealand creates.” The prototype boat is expected to launch early next month and will be put through a thorough sea trial to work through all the complex systems involved to get the boat up and flying.
8 The chase boat prototype is on track for March completion
GREEN HYDROGEN An integral supporter to The ETNZ Hydrogen project powered by Toyota is Emirates Team New Zealand Sustainability Ambassador and former Chair of Directors, Sir Stephen Tindall, who along with helping to fund the project also believes that strategically clean hydrogen will be a very important part of New Zealand’s green sustainability in future. “Green hydrogen comes from renewable energy like wind, solar and hydro and once the hydrogen is used in the boat, the only by-product is water.” said Tindall. “I believe our ambitious move into hydrogen boats by Emirates Team New Zealand will set the scene for motor driven craft as we did in starting the marine foiling revolution. I am looking forward to seeing millions of hydrogen driven vehicles and boats over the next 20 years.”

SAIL CARGO SHIP WILL LAUNCH IN 2023
French shipbuilder Piriou has just signed a contract with TOWT for the design studies and the construction of an 81 metre sailing cargo ship. After the design studies phase, the ship construction will take 18 months. This unit will be outfitted in Concarneau and the launch is planned for summer 2023. The ship is designed for 320 days at sea per year. Navigation is principally sail-powered, but the ship also has a hybrid power mode, with one or two engines operating, at different levels of power. The ship will be designed and built with wind as the principal power source, with a sail rigging spread over two masts. In addition to its wind propulsion, it is equipped with of two turbocharged 4stroke marine diesel engines. On the bridge, there will be a single command station and its ergonomics will allow the officer of the watch to carry out all the commands and course adjustment operations, excluding manoeuvres, alone.
40 | FEBRUARY 2022
The ship and all its equipment will comply with the regulations on cargo vessels performing international trips and will comply with the regulations relating to cargo vessels with a gross register tonnage greater than 500UMS. Vincent Faujour, Chairman of the Piriou group commented: “A few weeks after announcing the signing of a contract for the construction of Jean-Louis Etienne’s sailboat Septième Continent, Piriou is proving that the shipyard is at the forefront of innovation regarding the progress of sailing technologies and the decarbonization of maritime transport”. Guillaume Le Grand, Chairman of TOWTTransport wind transport, added: “Today, TOWT is going further by ordering a ship from Piriou that will transport up to 20,000 tonnes of goods per year by sail power. The sailing cargo ship, which will be completed in 2023, will make it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 90% and to economise 20 g of CO2 per tonne

WHEN INTELLIGENT ERGONOMICS MEET RESPONSIBLE RESINS A Scottish independent workboat operator has recently taken delivery of an 11m RIB that breaks new ground in its design and materials
8 Hydraulic lift is generated by the ‘Moxham Retaining Rails’ that modify and then manipulate waterflow beneath the craft
McLachlan Marine, one of the largest independent workboat operators in the North East of Scotland has taken delivery of the new O-CLASS, which was built by Glasgowbased The Ultimate Boat Company. The O-CLASS is a high-performance offshore craft that has been specifically designed and engineered as a ‘heavy-lift’ commercial vessel. Its intelligent ergonomics and superior shock mitigation technology provides a safer working environment for professional crew at sea for extended periods. Extra-wide gunwales, incorporating a durable anti-slip coating, make stepping up to a ladder or dockside easier and safer. The spacious ‘best in class’ deck areas are enclosed by high vertical sides which provide enhanced security and confidence for the crew when operating in big seas. REVOLUTIONARY HULL All UBC powerboats benefit from a revolutionary and patented hull technology that introduces compression or hydraulic lift resulting in vastly superior load carrying, manoeuvrability, performance, and stability – all of which are essential for serious offshore craft such as these. The hull has been designed by internationally renowned naval architect, John Moxham, who has had an illustrious career in the marine industry, from designing military highspeed craft through to creating the UK’s fastest RNLI lifeboat (E-Class Mark I). He was also at the forefront of using GRP for boats, designing the first mass-produced outboardpowered cabin cruiser, the ‘Microplus’ and is wellknown for his work on high-performance designs for brands such as Avon, Ribeye, Scorpion, and now The Ultimate Boat Company. This latest venture is, he says, “the pinnacle of my career”. For UBC’s pioneering portfolio of powerboats, John has completely redesigned the hull to fundamentally
42 | FEBRUARY 2022
redefine the way a planing hull interacts with the water, positioning the company at the forefront of hull design and powerboat building. Hydraulic lift is generated by the ‘Moxham Retaining Rails’ that modify and then manipulate waterflow beneath the craft. The hull improves waterflow across the propellers, increasing grip to achieve superior manoeuvrability and tighter turning with little loss of speed. It also introduces a major practical advantage by enabling the helm to easily maintain a constant visual on the horizon through its linear transition onto the plane, derived by mitigating stern squat and associated bow lift. McLachlan Marine’s new boat, which is to be based on the West Coast of Scotland, will be used for safety boat duties, dive support and fast response operations. SUSTAINABLE COMPOSITE The Ultimate Boat Company gave the O-CLASS its official world launch at the recent Southampton Boat Show, which generated a high level of media and industry interest in the boat, the high-performance hull design, and the new fully recyclable and sustainable composite material that UBC is pioneering as an option for its high-performance boat hulls in conjunction with its parent company, ExoTechnologies. The material, named ExoMarineTM, the marine variant of DANUTM, has been created as an alternative to glass reinforced plastic (GRP), to combat the growing problem of end-oflife GRP hulls going to landfill. This natural core material comprises a combination of styrene-free resin and sustainable fibres, is stronger and lighter than fibreglass and less brittle than carbon fibre. Crucially, its cost is comparable with traditional materials, and no additional manufacturing or labour costs are required.

POLLUTION CONTROL
8 Underwater radiated noise is becoming more of a concern
UNDERWATER RADIATED NOISE IS POLLUTION TOO Classification society The Korean Register (KR) has developed new ‘Guidance for Underwater Radiated Noise’ which will help protect marine ecosystems by reducing noise from ships. As ships’ size and speed increases to handle high volumes of seaborne trade so underwater radiated noise is becoming a more serious issue, causing increasing disruption to the marine ecosystem. The IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) is discussing measures to mitigate this growing challenge. As a result, new regulations are expected shortly, which will determine sensitive areas to noise, where ships calling in that area will be required to meet appropriate standards for underwater radiated noise. The maritime industry is also focused on developing core technologies to address the issue as environmental regulations are
The class notation is given in the form of ‘URN-T(20)’, which indicates that when a ship operates at a speed equivalent to 20 knots in still water, it meets the transit criteria for underwater radiated noise. URN is an abbreviation for underwater radiated noise tightened, as part of the overall paradigm shift to more eco-friendly ships. In support of this industry move, KR has developed a class notation for underwater radiated noise and Guidance which is based on ISO 17208 (International standard of quantities and procedures for description and measurement

of underwater sound from ships). The Guidance covers the noise standard for two operating conditions: normal operation (transit) and quiet operation (quiet). The class notation is given in the form of ‘URN-T(20)’, which indicates that when a ship operates at a speed equivalent to 20 knots in still water, it meets the transit criteria for underwater radiated noise. URN is an abbreviation for underwater radiated noise. A KR official said: “Several countries and ports have already introduced regulations relating to underwater radiated noise, and some ports, such as the Port of Vancouver, are offering discounts on port user fees for vessels that meet the standards. If our customers’ vessels have obtained KR’s class notation for underwater radiated noise, they will also be able to benefit from these advantages while reducing their impact on the maritime environment.”

Using AR in ship operations Fraunhofer has produced a paper detailing its latest research into the use of augmented reality (AR) in ship operations. Despite AR’s increased use in a number of areas, such as maintenance, using computergenerated information to enhance real images is so far rare in day-to-day ship operations. This area is ripe for exploring as the availability of data increases in tandem with falling numbers of personnel on board. At Fraunhofer’s Center for Maritime Logistics and Services (CML), researchers have been studying this area of conflict for several years. To ensure that the large amount of
44 | FEBRUARY 2022
information on board can be prepared and made available to different users in a targeted manner, data must be analysed, fit for purpose and presented in an easily interpretable way so that the correct decision is made. Data on ship position and movement, environmental data, and nautical information on approach and specified berth, supplemented by the current maritime traffic situation, enable a pilot to control the ship from shore as well. Camera systems and other optical monitoring sensors can provide important
information, giving those on the bridge a more comprehensive overview than is currently possible. Thus the use of AR offers the possibility to improve the safety of shipping, as well as bringing economic benefits. At the CML, Fraunhofer uses simulator to brings together navigators, pilots and tugboat operators with AR developments in a range of real-life situations to develop, test and evaluate AR-based human/machine interfaces that work intuitively and interactively. Fraunhofer’s paper, ‘Increasing Maritime Situational Awareness by Augmented Reality Solutions’ is available for free download.

MariApps Marine Solutions is deploying its smartPAL software suite to support Bourbon Marine & Logistics in its digitalisation efforts. The French company, which provides support services to the offshore oil and gas industry, has called on MariApps to help optimise its fleet management process including day-to-day operations in crewing, maintenance, quality, health and safety, and finance. “The rapid pace of technological advances combined with the maritime industry’s need to streamline operations leads to more and more companies looking for new ways to further optimise the management of their fleet and automate process,” Sankar Ragavan, chief executive of MariApps. Developed by software developers and marine experts, smartPAL allows users to retrieve real-time finance, performance and operational data. “Bourbon’s clients expect nothing less than executional excellence and this is a promise we seek to keep,” said Rodolphe Bouchet, chief executive of Bourbon Marine & Logistics.
Autonomous partnership
8 With a fleet of 172 vessels, Bourbon Marine & Logistics provides services for the offshore oil and gas industry
“By choosing smartPAL as a ship management software to manage our fleet, we aim to leverage the latest digital solutions to integrate ship management functions, simplify and provide end-to-end process digitalisation. “Our objectives with this ambitious project are to reduce operating costs and further improve safety as well as the quality of service,” he added.
US classification society ABS will work with HHI’s Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and its autonomous navigation subsidiary, Avikus, to integrate autonomous and remote-control functions into vessels. The work will be carried out in compliance with requirements outlined in the ABS Guide for Autonomous and Remote Control Functions. The Guide provides a mix of goal-based and prescriptive requirements set against a wider risk-based approach. ABS and HHI signed a Strategic Framework Agreement at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which will lead to a series of Joint Development Projects (JDPs).

DEDICATED TO DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION Furuno wants to move the digital transformation of marine electronics and autonomous ships forward by sharing the latest technological innovations already on the market, or poised for commercialisation. It’s new website “Full Ahead with Furuno” explains how this digital transformation will lead to a revolution that will shake up the maritime industry in an increasingly connected and digital world. It also encourages interested parties to get involved in the discussion. “The number of ships crossing the world’s oceans is growing every day and the seas are more crowded than ever. The size of ships is also increasing. It is becoming more critical to know the situation around the ship directly from the bridge to improve safety and security during any operation,” said Kazuma Waimatsu, senior executive officer of Furuno’s marine electronic products division and project leader. “At Furuno, we have already taken up part of the challenge and created a system to support seafarers’ visual perception during operations using augmented reality (AR) technology, which will also be the first step towards the automated ship of the future.” FUTURE VISION The end aim of the website is to achieve Furuno’s ambition to achieve the future of commercial navigation - safe and efficient navigation even without human presence. But Mr Waimatsu said that this grand ambition is achievable only when two essential conditions are met: Autonomous navigation and remote management. Augmented reality technology has been implemented successfully in the automotive and gaming industries but has not been widely deployed in a maritime environment and this is something that Furuno is working towards. Together, Furuno and Mitsui OSK Lines have already

embarked on a joint development project laucnhing AR Navigation onboard 21 VLCCs in 2019. In Japan, in 2020, under the sponsorship of the Nippon Foundation, MEGURI2040, Furuno began a joint project to develop the world’s first completely crewless ship. The company has established a special division to accelerate the development of sensors and technologies that will enable the creation of the ship by 2025. Going forward, Furuno said that there are three significant steps on the road to achieving autonomous ship operation in future. First, “Recognition Support” where products such as Furuno’s AR Navigation ENVISION take care of recognising the surrounding situation to increase awareness. Next, “Decision Support” uses the information and interprets it to make an appropriate decision. Finally, “Ship Operational Support” which links that decision to the actual operation of the ship. But there’s still much work to be done in the last two areas.

engine,” said Alessia Ferrari, InfoSHIP Performance product manager. “InfoSHIP Performance gives actionable information to optimise a ship’s performance, route and even the ability to trace possible “hubs” close to the ship’s docking area.” WIN-WIN The agreement between the two parties aims to enhance the navigational data analysis of the InfoSHIP solution integrating information on real-time ship positioning, voyage planning and vessel performance optimisation.
InfoSHIP Performance is a cloud-based decision support system solution, designed to collect, integrate, extract and analyse data from day-to-day operations. It is meant for monitoring fleet operational efficiency and speeding up corrective actions if needed, based on AI-driven data analysis. Under the agreement, ChartWorld will deliver global coverage of its i4-Insight (Lloyd’s Register) Professional+ Charts. These are provided via a Web Mapping Service (WMS) application, hosted by ChartWorld. The partnership allows IB Marine to rely on ChartWorld’s electronic navigational charts (ENC), route network and port database.

FLEET MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE SOLUTION LOOKS TO BROADEN CUSTOMER BASE
A New Zealand-based fleet management software start-up has joined an innovative accelerator programme to help it move into a lucrative new business area. SeaLogs, the creators of a ground-breaking commercial fleet management software solution that removes the need for paper records, is one of only 25 businesses accepted onto an accelerator programme run by Yachting Ventures. Based in London, Yachting Ventures claims to be the worlds’ first start-up accelerator for the leisure marine, yachting and superyachting industries. Commencing in January 2022, the accelerator will support SeaLogs through mentorship, connections and education. Coupled with significant investment gained earlier this year, it will help fast-track the growth of the business, particularly in its target export markets. In October 2021, SeaLogs closed its first seed round, which was oversubscribed, and resulted in backing from the country’s leading investment firms, Icehouse Ventures and Flying Kiwi Angels along with a small group of private investors.
When used correctly, SeaLogs means all of the operational information is in one place, so you can enhance safety, compliance and become more efficient, saving time and money
‘‘
“That investment combined with the Yachting Ventures accelerator will help us to expand our customer base in Australia and America and launch into new markets in the UK and Europe,” explains SeaLogs founder and CEO, Kylie Tomlin. SeaLogs already works with a number of blue-chip customers, such as Fullers Group, the largest ferry fleet in the southern hemisphere, Ports of Auckland, and Skipperi. Ports of Auckland has praised SeaLogs for transforming their record-keeping, with Marine Pilot, Sam Eves, saying: “SeaLogs has

transformed our record-keeping on our fleet of vessels. Before SeaLogs, it was a mission to trawl through previous paper logbooks with illegible handwriting trying to find historical data. Now it’s a simple search from the office PC to find information entered on any of our fleet logbooks. It is now easy for the operators to use, accurate, and provides management with all the required information at the office in real-time.” Kylie adds, “When used correctly, SeaLogs means all of the operational information is in one place, so you can enhance safety, compliance and become more efficient, saving time and money.” SeaLogs was born in 2018 when Kylie, who was working as a Master, lost a paper logbook containing over six months’ worth of records. This sparked the idea to create a commercial marine software solution, transforming the traditional paper-based way of keeping records, and making fleet management effortless and accurate.
