WORLD’S LARGEST OFFSHORE CONVERTER STATION The installation of the world’s largest offshore converter station is being hailed by China Classification Society (CCS) as ‘a significant milestone’ in the development of deep-water wind power. CCS provided authentication and survey services for the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) Rudong offshore converter station, which is also an Asian first. CCS’ expert team has been involved throughout the design, construction, transportation, installation, and commissioning stages of the pioneering project. CCS says the facility effectively addresses the challenges of large capacity and long-distance power transmission presented by offshore wind farms. Rudong is the first offshore 400kV+ wind power flexible DC transmission project in China. The station will be used to collect 1,100MW of
electric energy from three windfarms (H6, H8, H10) in the Jiangsu Rudong project in China’s Yellow Sea. The station will then convert the electricity into DC power and transmit it onshore, a distance of around 100km, the longest

MOTORSHIP INSIGHT FOR MARINE TECHNOLOGY PROFESSIONALS
PROFILE
IAN BAYLIS Seacat Services Offshore wind decarbonisation is here to stay, says Ian Baylis, Managing Director of Offshore Energy Support Vessel (OESV) operator Seacat Services. As offshore wind grows exponentially, the sector’s ability to meet emission reduction targets faces increasing scrutiny from governments, developers and investors. With the market now central to national decarbonisation programmes, OESV operators face new pressures from their wind customers to reduce their carbon footprint. “But numerous obstacles litter the OESV industry’s path to zero emissions”, argues Baylis. “Over 90% of OESV emissions are generated whilst vessels are under charter, when the choice of fuel is decided by the customer. As a result, OESV operators often have limited control over, and ability to take action on, their vessels’ emissions through the use of alternative fuels. Modern OESV engines can operate on various distillate fuels with only minor modifications; our own use of 30% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO30) proved a
closer specification to our vessels’ engines than traditional marine gasoil (MGO). By using HVO30 on our fleet we can reduce CO2 emissions by 28%, as proven during our usage on Seacat Enterprise.” With HMRC removing the duty to HVO30, its price now almost matches MGO, Ian is quick to point out. “Operators should ensure their HVO30 fuel is ethically sourced, recycled oil, rather than palm oil, and this narrowing price gap between HVO30 and MGO improves the business case for the fuel’s wider adoption in offshore operations.” The lack of available technology which can balance an OESV operator’s green ambitions against demanding work scopes and KPIs is also hindering progress. Electric and hybrid vessels are in high demand, but until they can match the operational performance of current OESVs, the most effective way for operators to tackle emissions while retaining operational standards is through improved vessel design - such as optimised, low-resistance hull forms and foiling technologies, while alternative fuels mature.
For the latest news and analysis go to www.maritimejournal.com/news101
But successful decarbonisation requires more than adopting lower emission solutions in isolation. Seacat Services has realised this ambition as the first adopter of Cedar Marine’s Carbon Management Plan, a pioneering initiative setting emissions targets in line with business aims, and by establishing continuous pathways towards meeting these goals. In practice this means committing to sustained periods of R&D, operational change, and considerable investments to bring down emissions - which for Seacat encompasses technical and operational transformation of its vessels, and investment in solar panels and electric vehicles for its HQ. Ultimately, Ian concludes, for offshore wind to become a zero-carbon industry its owners and OESV operators must take steps to effectively reduce emissions without compromising on the high-performance standards required to optimise offshore operations. For this to happen, stakeholders all need to support the green transition on a more extensive, measured, and permanent basis.

EUROPEAN CABLE LAY EXPERTISE Jan De Nul Group’s Cable Laying Vessel Willem de Vlamingh has successfully installed the four export cables with a total length of 3km on the 376MW Formosa 2 offshore wind farm in Taiwan. This milestone marks the next step in the development of the Formosa 2 Offshore Wind Farm. Thanks to her shallow draft design, the Willem de Vlamingh was able to position itself close to the beach thereby limiting the shore pull distance to around 1,250 metres. At the beach landing, the cables have been pulled through four HDD ducts into the transition joint bays. The Willem de Vlamingh also acted as Trenching Support Vessel which, together with TSHD Niña and a Starfish outfitted with an in-house designed jet-skid tool, in the meantime also successfully completed the export cable burial works. For the installation of the export cables, Jan De Nul Group relied on its local supply chain network for the performance of the beach pull assistance
works, dive support, the installation of the HDD ducts, as well as the supply and operation of support vessels. This local network was set up with the support of Jan De Nul’s long-standing partner Hung Hua Corporation.

IMMERSED TUNNEL BESPOKE SEALS
Trelleborg’s marine and infrastructure operation has been awarded the contract to supply all of the closure joints, including a bespoke seal, to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) First Harbor Engineering Co. 8 Upon completion in 2024, it will be the longest immersed tunnel in Northern China
5.1 kilometres and consists of 18 large tunnel elements, with some weighing as much as 60,000 tons. Upon completion in 2024, it will be the longest immersed tunnel in Northern China. For the 18 tunnel elements and 219 segment joints, Trelleborg was
selected to provide a mixture of its industry leading Waterstop seals, Gina gaskets, Omega Seals and a new closure joint seal. In addition to the 18 immersed elements, there will be 14,000 meters of Waterstop and 7,000 meters of Omega seals provided for the cut and cover section at the north and south shores of the tunnel, which will seal the construction joints and expansion joints. These sealing systems not only showcase Trelleborg’s unique design capabilities, but the seals for the cut and cover sections will also help to speed up the construction time of the project. In traditional construction, bulkhead and concrete pouring would take two to three months longer underwater. However, Trelleborg’s solution enables all works to be prepared on the drydock, saving significant amounts of time. Trelleborg’s sealing systems promise a product life expectancy of up to 120 years with little-to-no maintenance.

Greenlink Interconnector marine licence approved Greenlink Interconnector Limited has welcomed the decision by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to approve its application for a Marine Licence for the Greenlink electricity interconnector project, which will link the power markets of Great Britain and Ireland. The Marine Licence is one of several consents required for the construction of the project and covers installation of the marine cable in UK waters. The approval by NRW is a major milestone for Greenlink and joins the onshore planning consents granted unanimously in July last year by Pembrokeshire County Council and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. Greenlink’s proposed 190km subsea and underground electricity cable will run beneath the Irish Sea to connect National Grid’s Pembroke Power Station in Wales and EirGrid’s Great Island substation in County Wexford, Ireland. It will have a nominal capacity of 500mW.
Subsea cable feasibility RINA, in JV with the Tunisian subsidiary Comete Engineering, has been awarded a public tender for the marine feasibility study for the 600MW Italy-Tunisia Interconnection issued by ELMED ÉTUDES SÀRL, a joint venture between Terna and Société Tunisienne de l’Électricité et du Gaz (STEG), the two companies which, respectively, manage the Italian and Tunisian electricity transmission grids. The Italy-Tunisia electric Interconnection is an important project for two-way electricity transfer between the two countries. Stretching over 200km with land and sub-sea sections to a depth of 800m, the ‘invisible’ cable will add resilience to power supply. The submarine survey project started in April 2021, and will run for one year.

WORKS IN PROGRESS
NEW DEEP-WATER HUB FOR GERMAN BALTIC PORT A two-phase project to expand the port of Mukran into an international deep-water agricultural handling hub has begun on the German Baltic coast, reports Tom Todd At a cost of about €30 million, Mukran’s Berth 3a is being expanded and the port basin deepened to 14.95m by the beginning of 2023. An estimated 640,000 cu m of sand will be dredged so that ships with a capacity of up to120,000 tons can be fully loaded directly at the pier. Mukran spokesman Felix Zimmermann told MJ the pier was being extended by 130m to 330m in work for completion hopefully before year’s end. Work on the harbour entrance would follow next year, he said. The first construction phase brings together the Munichbased, globally active BayWa Group - whose core handling includes agriculture, energy and building materials. Its partner is the Rügen-based Fährhafen Sassnitz - of which Mukran is a part.
We have always said that the German agricultural business is part of BayWa’s DNA and the investment that has now been launched underlines our position very clearly. Our goal is to become the most efficient handling point for grain and feedstuffs on the Baltic In addition to the port expansion, BayWa and German shipping company VIELA Export will together invest €5.5 million in a loading facility and two additional grain silos, each for up to 12,500 tons. VIELA Export operates out of Mukran and also Vierow inland. It handles products including grain, feedstuffs and fertilisers. BayWa said that as a result of the joint investment it would be possible in future to load 1,000 tons an hour at peak periods at two loading bays - 40% faster than now. Storage capacity will increase from 40,000 tons now to 65,000 tons, it said.

‘‘
The company peredicted the changes would mean that BayWa will be able to double its grain handling in Mukran to two million tons a year. Who will handle the construction work was not initially reported but BayWa said since Berth 3a was being built separately, ongoing BayWa operations would not be restricted by the construction work. “In recent years, BayWa has become strongly internationalised in the agricultural business, but without losing its roots in agriculture here at home”, said BayWa CEO Klaus Josef Lutz.“We have always said that the German agricultural business is part of BayWa’s DNA and the investment that has now been launched underlines our position very clearly. Our goal is to become the most efficient handling point for grain and feedstuffs on the Baltic”, he declared.

METHANOL TUG CONVERSION FOR PORT OF ANTWERP Antwerp’s ambitions to become a sustainable and CO2neutral port is typified with its tug fleet which as well as the proposed ‘methatug’ includes the three recently acquired Damen RSD 2513 tugs 50, 51 and 52 and the ‘hydrotug’ hydrogen-powered tug project. The project has had to navigate existing rules requiring the amendment of existing regulations. Rhine-based inland craft have to comply with Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine regulations which had previously forbid use of methanol as a marine fuel. The ‘methatug’ therefore became part of the EU-funded Fastwater project aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of methanol as a sustainable marine fuel. To gain the necessary dispensation the plan was submitted to CESNI, the European committee that administers overall standards for inland navigation and after 18 months of detailed negotiations the project has been approved with the tug expected to be operational early in 2022. Several European partners are involved and Port of Antwerp is supplying the vessel itself, photos indicating it to be the 2002-built tug 21. Belgian engineering company Multi carried out the feasibility study for the project while Swedish shipbuilder Scandinaos designed the vessel’s modifications. Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) is responsible for converting the engines and installing the methanol pipes and tanks and finally Schönau Germany-based Heinzmann GmbH is adapting the injectors. The vessel being converted is second of a trio of similar tractor tugs delivered in 2002 to Port of Antwerp for operation within the enclosed dock system. The vessels were built by Ceske Lodenice - Usti nad Labem with final fitting out by

Hot on the heels of acquiring three Tier III tugs, Port of Antwerp’s ‘greening the fleet’ programme will now see conversion of a tug to operate on methanol fuel
Scheepvaart en Konstruktie Bedrijf (SKB) of Antwerp. The 30m long tug is powered by ABC 8MDZC main engines developing 3,890kW in total powering Voith Schneider cycloidal propellers providing a bollard pull of 55t. CESNI secretariat, Benjamin Boyer said: “The CESNI secretariat is very enthusiastic about this retrofitted tugboat and is looking forward to learning from this experience. Indeed, it would be a major contribution to the ongoing regulatory work to allow methanol as fuel and then contribute to the energy transition of inland navigation.”

Vallianz Holdings and SeaTech Solutions have teamed up to develop an all-electric tug targeting a CAPEX increase of just 20% and lower life cycle costs. “Technology for electric vessels is available, and the real challenge is to develop a cost-effective total logistics solution”: the words of SeaTech director Govinder Chopra describing the challenge of moving from traditional shiphandling tug operations, embedded in generations of tradition to more environmentally friendly and sustainable operations while absorbing inevitable increased investment in the new technology required, this at a time when margins are increasingly tight in a highly competitive industry. Vallianz operates over 60 vessels in the Middle East, North Africa and Central and
Southeast Asia while SeaTech is described as ‘a centre of excellence in vessel design’. Both companies are based in Singapore but the challenge mentioned is relevant globally as the popularity of electric and hybrid tugs grows. The partnership aims to support vessel owners in complying with IMO’s 2030 and 2050 targets to reduce the shipping industry’s carbon footprint over coming decades.
The MOU will run for two years to develop ‘the next generation of environmentallyfriendly harbour tugs based on SeaTech’s EVT-60 design.’ Rather than adapting past designs the ‘e-tug’ will be a brand-new concept with battery power delivery optimised according to real-time power demand. The vessel will have a LOA of 26m, beam 12.8m and provide 60tbp and speed 12kn in an ASD/ azimuth propulsion arrangement with high-capacity battery modules providing sufficient power for its operational profile. Once developed, Vallianz will utilise its own shipyard Vallianz PT USP to begin preparation works for potential clients and the partnership with SeaTech marks Vallianz’s first step into development of electric vessels.

CROWLEY PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
Credit: Crowley
Crowley Engineering Services is addressing future challenges head on with the design of the first fully-electric US tug with autonomous technology. Tug owners considering new tonnage have complex questions to consider. Should it be powered by so called alternative fuels? Does the operating profile allow, or even demand hybrid operation? Should it be future-proofed for remote-control or even autonomous operation? Crowley’s basic design appears to provide the flexibility for whatever the customer, or even legislation will require in the future. Along with recently integrated Jensen Maritime, Crowley has produced a design based around a 70 tons bollard pull ASD tug, 24.9m in length featuring azimuth thrusters powered by two 1,800kW motors and a 6MWh battery. It can be customised to meet specific requirements with alternative power capacities suitable for standard hybrid arrangement if desired. The fully modular batteries can be upgraded as technology changes and in parallel Crowley has developed an onshore charging station allowing reliability at the tug’s home port.
8 eWolf will be the first fully-electric US tug with autonomous technology
It is designed with future autonomous operation in mind including integrated automation and control systems while not losing sight of existing safety and efficiency requirements, Crowley stating: ‘The intelligent manoeuvring and control systems offer more efficient vessel operations and allows the master to focus holistically on the overall control and positioning of the vessel in increasingly busy harbours.’ Additional data includes speed 12kn, fresh water capacity
1,703 litres and accommodation including berths for four persons. Sized and designed ‘to complete two ship assist jobs in the harbour with minimal to no charging required’ deck arrangements include 40hp electric render/recovery winches forward and aft with power saving technology allowing operation in a fully electric mode with zero emissions. Two small generators are included for emergency use and to enable transits of longer distances at reduced speed. The ABS-classed tug, to be named eWolf will be built by Master Boat Builders in Coden, Ala, and be compliant with USCG Sub-Chapter M regulations. Ray Martus, vice president, Crowley Engineering Services states: “Crowley’s design provides operators with the tugboat solution to continue serving ships quickly and powerfully, while reducing their environmental impact by eliminating a carbon footprint.” Adding: “This new design sets the standard for innovation by showing that sustainability and power can work together seamlessly in our maritime industries.”

TUGS & TOWING With battery power for tugs gaining interest, news arrives of Damen’s progress with ‘Sparky’ and Maersk’s ordering of a battery pack for one if its most powerful anchor-handlers. The arrival later this year of Sparky, Damen’s first fully-electric tug for New Zealand’s Ports of Auckland is awaited with interest and progress continues with installation of some 2,240 batteries totaling 2,784kWh in the RSD-E Tug 2513 currently under construction at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam. The batteries are arranged in strings for redundancy whereby if one battery in a string fails the others carry on the work. The batteries in the zero-emissions tug will be capable of recharging to full capacity in just two hours. Also of interest is news that Maersk Supply Service has chosen Wärtsilä to supply hybrid batteries for its 270tbp AHTS Maersk Minder with Maersk stating: ‘To the best of our knowledge, this will be the world’s first AHTS hybrid battery conversion.’ Large anchor-handlers such as Maersk’s M-class vessels are in a different league to shiphandling tugs such as Sparky and a sign of the progress with hybrid technologies that battery power is increasingly found now in the offshore sector. Maersk Minder develops 23,000bhp from four Wärtsilä main engines powering twin CP propellers and no fewer than five transverse thrusters. Hybrid battery/energy storage systems have experienced positive results in the PSV sector and Maersk expects a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions through reduced fuel consumption and it is the various roles, from heavy towing to DP subsea activities that

Damen Shipyards has delivered the multipurpose workboat Jamaica III to Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJAM) primarily for buoy maintenance but also with towing capabilities. PAJAM is no stranger to Damen’s products having previously acquired two Stan Tugs 2909 and two pilot vessels. This latest acquisition, designated the UV 3911 is also however a new addition to Damen’s portfolio and the sixth example in its utility vessel series ranging from 27m to 65m length. The specification indicates a particularly wellequipped vessel of adequate size for its role and one that can adapt to other duties including offshore. Jamaica III provides maintenance operations in PAJAM’s ports including laying and maintaining buoys for which a deck crane and 5t A-frame are provided along with underdeck chain storage area, the vessel designed for ‘excellent stability’ to cope with the weight of the chain and other equipment involved with its various assignments. A towing winch is provided with a pulling force of 10t (at 10m/min) and the vessel provides 18tbp and speed 11.3kn from a propulsion arrangement comprising two Caterpillar C18 main engines developing 1,000bkW in total powering 1,600mm controllable-pitch propellers in

A NEW FORCE FOR TASMANIAN TOWAGE Tasmania’s TasPorts has enhanced its towage provision with the entry into service of the country’s first Rotortug RT Force. TasPorts is the state-owned company charged with operating eleven Tasmanian ports along with Devonport Airport on the island state’s north coast. With 99% of Tasmania’s freight moving through its ports it is important that adequate maritime service provisions are in place to meet demands and in the Rotortug TasPorts has a significant addition to its nine strong tug fleet. Rotortugs are identified by their triple thruster arrangement, two forward and one aft providing maximum pull in any direction and RT Force was built by ASL Shipyard Singapore in 2010 for Kotug who has remained involved in the 84tbp tug’s career since, including its first commission operated by Teekay Marine Pty at the world’s largest bulk export port, Port of Hedland in Western Australia. Kotug is also involved in training for the crew as explained by Ard-Jan Kooren, COO of Kotug International B.V and Rotortug B.V: ‘We are very happy that the RT Force has set sail to Tasmania to support the operations of TasPorts. For sure this robust vessel will improve the operations in terms of redundancy, cost savings, faster handling and accurate manoeuvring and enhanced safety. We look forward to a great cooperation. All training, both for the tug crews and marine pilots, has been conducted in Tasmania at the Australian Maritime College under the
guidance of Kotug’s dedicated Training & Consultancy division.’ RT Force will operate at the Port of Bell Bay and main characteristics include 32m LOA, breadth of 12.2m and draught 6.2m. Niigata main engines provide 4,962kW in total to the three Niigata ZP-31 thrusters and performance data includes a service speed of 12kn. Of particular note and youngest in the fleet after RT Force are the RAL Z-Tech 6000 tugs Mount Florance and Yandeyarra both based at Hobart. These 65tbp tugs were built in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
Norway’s Buksér og Berging (BB) has received its sixth vessel from Sanmar, a powerful tractor tug and the first Tier III tug from the Turkish shipbuilder. The new vessel, named Bamse is a Robert Allan Ltd design, in this instance its impressive TRAktor 3000-Z tractor tug, the first of two for BB. It will operate out of Brevik, Norway conducting active escort operations through narrow waterways and with a top speed of 14kn, 75tbp and steering forces of more than 80t it will be capable of assisting ships sailing at 10kn in heavy weather. To achieve this performance extensive CFD simulations were carried out during the design phase to optimise escort capability. Bamse has a length of 30m, beam 12.8m and a maximum draught of 6.35m and is powered by Caterpillar 3516E high-speed Tier III compliant main engines (with SCR units) developing in total 4,400bkW powering Schottel SRP 490 CP Z-drives located forward in tractor configuration. The ABS-classed vessel has a Karmøy escortrated winch aft along with tugger winch, tow pins and deck crane with the 50t SWL mooring arrangement allowing for towing ‘on the hip’.

GUADELOUPE TUG ORDER FOR PIRIOU
Credit: Piriou
French shipbuilder Piriou has notched up another order for its OST 30 ASD tug for operation in the French Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe. At a time when tug delivery and order news involves increasing numbers of hybrid, all-electric or alternative fuel vessels it is easy to overlook continuing interest in more traditional variants, typically ASD configuration but benefitting from progress in more fuel efficient machinery. The order has been placed by Caraibes Remorquage, operator of Pointe-à-Pitre harbour in Guadeloupe. A positive endorsement of a builder and specific design is when a client returns to the same yard for a similar vessel such as here where the new tug, to be named Pointe Vigie 2 follows the OST 30 Pointe Tali which became Caraibes’ first tug when delivered by Piriou in 2018. The reason for the additional vessel, described as ‘more powerful and better equipped’ is a commonly heard one where tug operators must handle ever-larger container ships, in this case calling at the ports of Basse-Terre, Marie-Galante and Pointe-à-Pitre. Guadeloupe’s location in the centre of the chain of Caribbean islands is also of strategic importance for responding to ship casualties and Pointe Vigie 2 will be capable of providing

speed of 12.5kn. At 60tbp Pointe Vigie 2 will be more powerful than its fleet-mate which provided 55tbp with a fuel capacity of 87m3 and 26m3 of fresh water. The vessel will benefit from periods of three years between careening with special anti-fouling and an ICAF system. Other main characteristics include an overall breadth of 10.4m, depth at main deck 4.45m and maximum draught 5m. Specific client requirements include: a pneumatic starter system to limit the number of on-board batteries; gasoil and fresh water systems for ship supply; firefighting capability, stern winch and towing hook for deep sea towing; fendering adapted to push low freeboard barges and finally an indirect refrigeration system involving all the vessel’s equipment with box coolers adapted to tropical conditions with no seawater circulation. The new vessel is under construction at Piriou’s Vietnam shipyard and due for delivery in Q3 2022.

MARINE RENEWABLES
OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY TO MAKE HYDROGEN AND AMMONIA An innovative £10M research project will investigate the potential of harnessing offshore wind and marine renewable energy to produce zero carbon hydrogen and ammonia fuels The University of Strathclyde will lead the multi-disciplinary Ocean-REFuel: Ocean Renewable Energy Fuels project, which will explore ways of converting ocean energy into fuels for use in heating, energy storage and difficult to decarbonise transport applications. The news comes as the UK prepares to host COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference, in Glasgow and the consortium includes world-leading research teams from the Universities of Nottingham, Cardiff, Newcastle and Imperial College London. The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, industry, and the partner universities, who have also pledged a total of nine linked PhD studentships. UNTAPPED POTENTIAL The UK government has the ambition for offshore wind to produce more than enough electricity to power every home in the country by 2030, based on current electricity usage, but there remains extremely large ocean energy potential which can never be fully utilised by the electricity network. Renewable electricity has been a remarkable success over the past 20 years, but the same cannot be said for other energy uses, in particular heat, heavy transport vehicles and aviation. New technologies and systems need to be developed to avert the worst consequences of climate change and the OceanREFuel project will directly address challenges associated with energy storage, renewable heat and the decarbonisation of transport such as road, marine and aviation. Renewable Energy technologies such as wind are impacted by intermittency and production issues and this project will explore storage solutions, such as hydrogen and ammonia, that can help manage the issue of intermittent supply. Like electricity, hydrogen is an energy carrier and can be produced from a variety of sources, including seawater and used as a source of energy or fuel. It could also allow the stored energy to be fed back into the grid, and potentially channel renewable energy to difficult-todecarbonise sectors such as renewable heat and transport, which account for more than 60% of UK energy demand. A report in 2020 from the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult claimed that even if only offshore wind-to-hydrogen is considered, the exports to Europe alone could reach an annual value of up to £48bn. PERFECT TIMING Professor Feargal Brennan, Head of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at the University of Strathclyde and the Ocean-REFuel project lead, said: “The Ocean-REFuel project has come at precisely the right time to build on the successes of offshore wind and has the potential to create a step-change in how we consider our whole energy system. “The team will aim to use their vast experience to provide international thought-leadership on how to best develop this enormous energy potential in a safe, environmentally sensitive and responsible manner to provide maximum benefit to local communities whilst contributing in a major way to net-zero.
“The challenges are immense, and we are acutely aware of the importance of getting this right, given the backdrop of the climate emergency and the global consequences unless step changes can be achieved.” The Ocean-REFuel project builds on EPSRC investment of more than £35 million into offshore wind power over the past decade and Dr Lucy Martin, Deputy Director for CrossCouncil Programmes at EPSRC, said: “The UK is the world’s largest producer of offshore wind energy but there is vast potential yet to be tapped into, as outlined in the Prime Minister’s plan to quadruple the amount we produce by 2030 including the opportunity to use offshore wind to help meet our green hydrogen production needs. “By addressing key research challenges to the wider use of offshore wind energy and integrating it into green hydrogen production, the Ocean-REFuel project will help us to engineer the radical energy transition needed to deliver on our Net Zero commitment and also enhance the sustainability and resilience of the UK energy system.”

ANOTHER WIND TO HYDROGEN PLAN MOVES A STEP CLOSE A green infrastructure developer has signed an agreement to support onshore green hydrogen plants and associated industrial infrastructure. Cerulean Winds has signed an agreement with px Group, a leading UK operator of large-scale industrial facilities, as it moves to progress its plans for an integrated 200-turbine floating wind and hydrogen development in the North Sea. The Cerulean proposal has capacity to generate 3GWh of power, enough to electrify the majority of offshore facilities, reducing CO2 emissions by more than half from 2025. An excess of 1.5GWh of power would be diverted to onshore green hydrogen plants. The three onshore hydrogen sites would be located in the North of England, North-east Scotland and on Shetland. LEASE AND OWNERSHIP Under the agreement, px Group would be responsible for lease and ownership arrangements for the sites and for obtaining planning permissions and permitting. This would include obtaining the outline approvals prior to more detailed engagement with local government, regulatory and environmental stakeholders. px Group, which owns Saltend Chemicals Park in Humber, manages, operates, and maintains some of the UK’s largest industrial facilities, including the NSMP St Fergus Gas Terminal near Peterhead. This new agreement would see px Group operate the hydrogen generation facilities and the associated onshore infrastructure, including the onshore substations and grid connections.
Everything hinges on those leases being granted, even conditionally, by this autumn so we can move ahead on schedule. The risk of not moving quickly on basin-wide decarbonisation would wholly undermine the objectives set out in the North Sea Transition Deal
‘‘
“px Group’s expertise and asset base make it a valuable addition to Cerulean’s UKCS decarbonisation proposition,” said Dan Jackson, Cerulean Winds founding director. “This project which would see the offshore industry helping cut emissions from onshore industrial sites, is a real turning point in the shift towards a joined-up approach to tackling accelerating the decarbonisation of the UK’s on and offshore industrial facilities. “The North Sea Transition Deal calls for a reduction in offshore emissions of 10% by 2025, rising to 25% in 2027 and 50% by 2030. The Cerulean proposal would exceed these targets. Crucially though, the green power would be used to generate green hydrogen which can be used to decarbonise other industrial sectors.
26 | AUGUST 2021
“That lines us up to put us on a par with other countries such as Germany which has taken the decision to decarbonise its heavy industries and is actively looking at how to use green energy from windfarms to do that.” Geoff Holmes, px Group CEO said: “We are delighted to be working with Cerulean on this potentially ground-breaking project. As an owner and an operator, px Group has over 25 years hands-on experience in developing cleaner energy projects and reducing emissions. Operating and managing infrastructure which supports the UK’s energy transition is core to our business and we are thrilled to be able to support the decarbonisation of offshore facilities in the North Sea.” The progression of Cerulean’s £10 billion green infrastructure plan hinges on a decision from Marine Scotland. The company has made a formal request for seabed leases, asking that the Scottish and UK governments make an “exceptional” case to deliver an “extraordinary” outcome for the economy and environment.
8 Cerulean Winds has plans for a 200-turbine floating wind and hydrogen development in the North Sea
TIMESCALE CRITICAL A favourable decision, says Cerulean, must be made by Q3 this year to progress the scheme to meet the timescales set out in the North Sea Transition Deal. “Timing is absolutely crucial in this,” said Mr Jackson. “Everything hinges on those leases being granted, even conditionally, by this autumn so we can move ahead on schedule. The risk of not moving quickly on basin-wide decarbonisation would wholly undermine the objectives set out in the North Sea Transition Deal.” Cerulean Winds is a green infrastructure developer founded by Dan Jackson and Mark Dixon, who have together, over 25 years, led large scale offshore infrastructure developments. With exclusive Tier 1 contractor relationships in place, Cerulean Winds has a market funded infrastructure construct to deliver integrated floating wind and hydrogen developments at scale. Dan and Mark have extensive experience in the offshore sector including establishing successful global subsea engineering consultancy DeepSea Engineering, which was acquired by McDermott International.

PAIRING HYDROGEN AND FLOATING WIND The world’s first combined floating wind and green hydrogen project could be developed off the east coast of Scotland. Situated off the off Aberdeenshire coast in Scotland, the 200MW Salamander floating wind project, developed by Simply Blue Energy in partnership with Subsea 7, has signed a memorandum of understanding with ERM for the potential use of the ERM Dolphyn hydrogen technology. Adrian de Andres, Salamander project director, said: “When we started the Salamander project, we always envisioned a stepping-stone project and a catalyser for future, bigger commercial opportunities. Considering the rapidly approaching 2030 deadline for the floating wind and green hydrogen targets, we now think the Salamander project could act not only as a stepping-stone for floating wind but also potentially for green hydrogen production, paving the way for multi-GW green hydrogen developments in the 2030s.” FIRST OF ITS KIND TECHNOLOGY The ERM Dolphyn is a first of a kind technology combining electrolysis, desalination and hydrogen

production on a floating wind platform - with the hydrogen transported to shore via pipeline. It is an economic and scalable solution, which produces green hydrogen with no carbon emissions at the point of use. The Salamander project, with the incorporation of ERM Dolphyn technology, has the potential to make a material impact on the UK Government’s 10-point plan, including the ambition to deliver 1GW of floating wind power by 2030 and 5GW of green hydrogen by 2030. The Salamander project is also working closely with Scotland Gas Networks (SGN) to potentially integrate with and connect into future 100 % hydrogen infrastructure or as a blend with existing gas infrastructure, which SGN are aiming to develop through their decarbonisation roadmap. “The Salamander project is targeting a lease under the upcoming Innovation & Decarbonisation leasing process and looks forward to putting forward our ambitious green hydrogen plans to Crown Estate Scotland and Marine Scotland,” added de Andres. Prior to the Salamander project, ERM Dolphyn aims to undertake a 10 MW demonstration project.

MARINE RENEWABLES Deep water wind power developer Hexicon has purchased the Wave Hub test site from Cornwall Council, UK. The deal will see Hexicon through its UK subsidiary, TwinHub Limited, acquire the assets of Wave Hub Limited from the local authority, Cornwall Council, for an undisclosed sum, a move that has been welcomed by local renewable energy innovation body Marine-i. The Wave Hub test site lies 16km off the north Cornwall coast. Hexicon intends to develop the site for a 30-40MW floating offshore wind project and deploy their innovative twin-turbine floating foundation. The project, called TwinHub, will be seen as a coup for Cornwall, which has a significant offshore renewable energy supply chain and has worked hard to position the maritime region as a base for floating offshore wind projects in the Celtic Sea. Commenting on the news, Prof Lars Johnanning, Programme Director for Marine-i, said: “This is excellent news and a real step forward for Cornwall in its ambition to become one of the world’s leading regions for floating offshore wind technology. “Hexicon is highly experienced in the field of renewable energy and has already installed some innovative energy projects around the world. Having a major player like Hexicon investing into Cornwall is bound to stimulate interest in the region from other leading international players.”

VESSEL LAUNCHES
SILENT SERVICE FOR FORWARDTHINKING SCOTTISH LOCH Rangers will be seen, not heard, in this new addition to Loch Lomond park’s fleet, designed and built by Water Witch in Liverpool The custom-built 100% electric 8.0m maintenance boat is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK. It will be used as a general multi-purpose support vessel and to maintain hazard buoys across the Loch. “I think it’s going to make quite a big difference, really, because the previous vessel we were using is a diesel boat. So obviously, there’s more pollutants with a boat like that,” says Park Ranger Matt Dale. “This boat is zero-pollution, really. So, I think it’ll be a lot better for us.” RECYCLED CONTENT The aluminium ‘Versi-Cat’ vessel is sustainably built from up to 75% recycled content and the hulls are 100% recyclable and she is equipped with a 12-kilowatt motor from on-water electric mobility leaders Torqeedo, allowing her to easily make the 7 knots required. The motor is powered by the most up to date and safest ‘intelligent’ Power48 lithium batteries on the market. The vessel’s electric controls feature a built-in GPS, an on-board computer and display for information such as speed and input power, state of charge and remaining range, and even an advanced communication system.
In March this year, the Loch Lomond and Trossachs Park Authority set the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. They say greenhouse gas emissions have already been reduced by about 35 percent since 2014 The workboat is fitted with a large work deck, recessed storage under deck, and a lifting frame for handling buoys using a pontoon configuration to provide a spacious and wellfunctioning work platform. With the lifting frame and electric windlass, the vessel is equipped to handle a variety of tasks: maintenance of installations, towing of boats, personnel transport, rescue missions, as well as the possibility to assist in oil spill operations. A customized road trailer was also supplied to allow the vessel to be easily deployed to different sites, and the A frame is removable for transportation.
Jones, the Park’s Director of Environment, says about 40 to 45 percent of all the Park Authority’s emissions come from its transport, so reducing that is key to hitting their 2030 netzero target. “We think as an organisation, so as a National Park Authority, we can do that within ten years,” he says. “We don’t have a huge carbon footprint ourselves. We’ve already reduced our carbon footprint by about 35 percent over the past five or six years. So, we know we can do that if we give ourselves more time.” With its trees, peatlands and deep loch, the Park itself is a huge sink for carbon. But Jones says climate change is already causing increased flood events, which cause land slides. Some species are being affected by changing weather patterns. Certain fish species rely on cooler water temperatures to breed. The Authority’s plans are part of a wider ambition for the entire park to achieve net-zero, that would include the about four million people that visit the area annually.
8 The workboat is fitted with a large work deck, recessed storage under deck, and a lifting frame for handling buoys
8 Tests saw it sail the length of the Loch - some 20 miles - on a single charge
SPEED AND RANGE The Versi-Cat will operate in a large area, so both range and being environmentally friendly were important factors for the operator. The speed and range requirements were easily met to cover the necessary distances. Tests saw it sail the length of the Loch - some 20 miles - on a single charge. In March this year, the Loch Lomond and Trossachs Park Authority set the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. SEAWORK CONNECT PREVIEW An innovative anchor technology that was recognised at the Seawork Innovation Showcase back in 2017 is now seeking funding to help take it to market. According to Ivor Griffith, its inventor, “The Tidal Anchor® is an omnidirectional marine anchor which has been developed to solve the problem affecting conventional anchors which need to be re-set when the tide or wind changes direction. This involves retrieving and re-deploying the anchor during which time the vessel will move off station. Also considerable damage can occur to a fragile sea-bed environment, due to the length of dragging before the traditional anchor becomes secure again and perhaps not even setting at all. However, when deployed, the Tidal Anchor’s environmentally friendly, innovative design sets within its own length and remains safely in position with a high holding capability, thus protecting a fragile seabed.” CAD modelling and FEA was carried out by Cardiff University. After extensive tank, beach and sea trials were undertaken (with support given by Swansea University through their Survey Vessel R.V.Noctiluca), the anchor has been developed into a secure, safe mooring solution for both leisure and working craft. seabed attached to the vessel via a shackle through the Bucket Handle. The Flukes are free to rotate within the cut-outs in the Side Panels and hence move under their own weight to rest with their tips on the seabed - the angle of engagement is initially 16°. Loading the Bucket Handle (e.g. due to tidal/ wind loading on the attached vessel) causes the front facing Fluke to dig into the seabed - this is promoted by a funnelling effect caused by the claws in the Side Panel. Hence, the anchor buries itself into the sand, with the
loading on the Fluke causing it to rotate into the maximum allowable position set by the Side Panel cutouts. The rear Fluke is also loaded and therefore contributes to the holding power of the anchor. Changing tides or wind conditions can vary the position of the loading, which causes the Bucket Handle to slide along the Slider Bars and re-engage on the opposing end - thus causing the rear facing Fluke to engage. The design, does not require structural welding during manufacture. A feasibility study is being carried out by Cardiff University into the viability of manufacturing the Tidal Anchor® in different material composites.Although the Tidal Anchor has shown great, early potential, there is still a requirement for the project to go forward to market, where Ivor anticipates there will be a strong demand. He is seeking funding to assist with this next stage, and interested parties can find out more at www.tidalanchors.com

SEAWORK MARINE CIVILS PREVIEW
For coastal projects requiring design lives in the region of 120 years, stainless steel provides practical solution, says Seawork Connect Marine Civils exhibitor DYWIDAG. Typical applications include: rock bolts & rock dowels, stitching bars and ties. DYWIDAG HCR Threadbars are also suitable for the fixing of stainless steel DELTAX® & TECCO® STAINLESS mesh, used for slope protection applications. DYWIDAG HCR Threadbar is manufactured from stainless steel and is available in both 1,4301 (304) and 1,4401 (316) grades from stock. HCR Threadbar has been developed for permanent applications requiring higher levels of corrosion resistance than standard structural steels. HCR Threadbar has a coarse pitch thread, running the full length of the bar, enabling the bar to be cut or coupled at any point, as well as a full load nut termination placed at the end, for load transfer to the face of a structure. 8 Connect with DYWIDAG at Seawork Connect 5-7 October.

GETTING SMART ABOUT SAFETY Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRLs) are valuable for vertical fall arrest protection, but knowing where, when and how to use them is critical This is according to Jon Rowan, product line manager at MSA Safety, who stressed that an SRL is there to provide a fall arrest point. It will always be attached to an anchor which may be in different locations. “Understanding your anchor point is the first step in making an appropriate product choice - you need to consider where the anchor is, how far it is away from the working point and how far away it is from the edge,” said Rowan. “Being conscious of fall clearance is also vital - having knowledge of distance means you can allow enough space for a fall to happen in the safest way possible.” TAILOR SOLUTION TO ENVIRONMENT There are a vast number of situations where fall protection is necessary, but the specific type of solution will depend on the environment. SRLs are inherently versatile and used across a wide range of industries, e.g. for vertical access to turbines and confined spaces.
Understanding your anchor point is the first step in making an appropriate product choice - you need to consider where the anchor is, how far it is away from the working point and how far away it is from the edge “Another factor to consider is fall clearance - the minimum vertical distance required between a worker’s feet and a lower level, which can also vary at different points on the working area,” noted Rowan. “A self-retracting lifeline can accommodate significant variance since it remains under tension and automatically adjusts the line.”

‘‘
Ultimately, quality design enhances lifetime performance, maximising safety and reducing cost. “Entry-level, economy priced PPE is much less likely to offer the same performance and durability as higher quality, more premium solutions,” warns Rowan. Equipment designed to be serviceable in the field and minimise repair times can dramatically reduce costly downtime and delays, he explained. Smart retraction dampening technology can also not only increase safety but limit damage to the product and surroundings, thus minimising downtime and further maximising product lifespan.

Composite IP66 fire hose cabinet Jo Bird has announced the launch of its first IP66 rated cabinet after several years of painstaking R&D. The Firebird range were already setting the standard with the excellent IP56 rating but following the principles of Kaizen, the R&D team were not prepared to rest on their laurels. The prototype cabinets have gone through extensive testing for both dust and water ingress which was carried out by the TUV Sud testing house. The IP56 rated cabinets already offer excellent protection from water and good for dust. The reason Jo Bird went for the further IP66 protection is the increasing amount of

electronic components being stored in the cabinets which need this level of protection. This is a trend likely to increase further. The JB80 is initially being launched as a fire hose cabinet designed to cope with the rigours of tough offshore conditions and to provide many years of reliable protection for
a marine fire hose and nozzle. It can adapted to store other equipment as required. The design uses corrosion resistant materials throughout to provide virtually maintenance free service but has the added benefit of being lightweight through its construction from Lloyds approved composite materials. The method of manufacturing uses a closed mould process for the door to help reduce VOC emissions, minimise waste and provide the fine tolerance needed to achieve such a high IP level.

DRONE JOINS COASTGUARD RESCUE TEAMS The drone, initially trialled a year ago during the first easing of pandemic restrictions, will fly from the HM Coastguard helicopter base at Caernarfon, North Wales and will also participate in a series of major training exercises with other 999 teams. HM Coastguard’s search and rescue helicopters and fixedwing surveillance aircraft provide support in maritime, coastal and inland environments, including mountainous regions. During a phase of operational integration training, the drone - operated by Bristow Helicopters Ltd - flew in formation alongside both the HM Coastguard S92 helicopter from Caernarfon (also operated by Bristow), and HM Coastguard’s King Air surveillance aircraft, operated by 2Excel Aviation. Remotely piloted aircraft are expected to play a key role when UKSAR2G, the second-generation of search and rescue service, is due to begin operations in 2024. Maritime and Aviation Minister, Robert Courts said: “Keeping people safe on the sea and around our coast will always be a priority, which is why we continue to explore new and cuttingedge ways to modernise search and rescue efforts. “Drones have the potential to help our coastguard teams save even more lives and it is right we are working to advance these technologies here in the UK.” Director of Her Majesty’s Coastguard, Claire Hughes said: “Summers on the coast are always busy and we will continue to use technology which could potentially save lives. When
Avoiding onboard distractions Seafarers can now benefit from new advice on how to avoid potential distractions which can lead to a loss of concentration and situational awareness. Ocean Technologies Group’s (OTG) ‘Distractions’ e-learning module has been developed to help seafarers understand exactly what distraction is, recognise the link between distraction and a reduction in situational awareness, identify the common sources of distraction and learn how it can be effectively managed. Speaking about OTG’s new module, Raal Harris, group creative director, said that “it is more important than ever that we are able to equip mariners to recognise the impact distraction can have on their situational awareness and performance. And, of course, some tips they can use to mitigate it”. Distractions are recognised as one of the biggest causes of human error, resulting in incidents, accidents or near misses at sea The increased use of electronic devices onboard, either personal or work related, a lack of procedures, seafarer stress and

Ultrasound fire foam greenlighted Ultrasound technology is being used to quantify the exact water/foam ratio for onboard firefighting in what is thought to be the first time. Classification society DNV has issued a verification statement allowing Survitec to use its fire foam testing process onboard maritime vessels or offshore structures. The new Produced Foam Live Test method uses ultrasound technology to verify the effectiveness of fire-fighting foam, according to the mandatory requirements set out in IMO MSC.1/Circ.1432 9.2.4. Survitec, said: “We have developed a safe, environmentally sound and predictable test method removing a lot of the time and expense involved in foam sampling and testing. It delivers peace of mind to ship operators and crews.” The ruling applies to any vessel or offshore structure that has a deck foam system, a high expansion foam system (engine room) or Heli-deck foam system. Survitec uses two ultrasonic flow meters to compare both values. Unlike existing techniques, the Survitec method means testing can be performed while the vessel is berthed alongside, without having to discharge any foam overboard or send samples to testing labs. Current test methodologies have to run the fire-fighting system with foam for at least two minutes, so there is a heavy consumption of costly concentrate, often resulting in the need to replace the entire tank volume. The produced foam is discharged overboard. Survitec’s Produced Foam Live Test does not need to use the concentrate or produce foam in the test.

A navigational simulator has become the first interactive ‘instructor-led’ cloud training solution to gain new DNV Class D certification. Wärtsilä Voyage’s NTPRO (Navi-Trainer Professional 5000) navigational simulator has attained certification according to the new DNV Class D standard for cloud-based simulators — making it the first certified cloud solution that offers both interactive instructor-led and student-led training. With this, the navigational simulator now has full compliance (Class A, B, C, D) with DNV’s ST-0033 Maritime Simulator Systems standard. “The Class D cloud simulator standards are essentially the same as the Class C classroom simulator standards,” said Johan Ekvall, head of product, simulation and training at Wärtsilä Voyage. “Since we use
the same technology platforms in our Cloud Simulation solutions as we do for physical classroom Class C simulators, and provide both instructor-led as well as self-directed exercises, we already had all the necessary functional to meet and exceed the simulator standards for STCW as well as more advanced training applications.”
Wärtsilä Cloud solutions are certified to provide both the interactive exercise control required for mandatory (STCW) training and examination, as well as the self-directed detached exercise and assessment that can be undertaken to enhance or supplement Instructor controlled simulations. Together these simulation solutions and associated value-added services equip the training providers with all the tools needed to develop effective and targeted blended learning courses that can be considered for flag or other industry approvals. “The new standard for cloud training only further facilitates realisation of the value created by remote simulation and learning,” added Ekvall.

AI NOW DEALING WITH REAL MAYDAY CALLS Since June 21, Sweden’s sea and air rescue leaders have been trialling an artificial intelligence solution that monitors Mayday calls The new system, that monitors emergency calls in the Baltic Sea and around the Swedish coast, is now being used in live tests, and assists the rescue leader in identifying emergency calls by means of AI and Machine Learning. The tests are underway within the framework of the Heimdall Innovation Project, which aims to develop functional AI technology to gain assistance with intercepting and interpreting incoming emergency calls and presenting them in an operator-friendly interface. The idea is that of Tobias Nicander, a rescue leader at the Swedish Maritime Administration’s sea and air traffic control centre, who had experienced work-induced stress and wanted better technical support to facilitate the operator. “It feels tremendously satisfying that we can now conduct live tests using real emergency calls; I see great potential for the application. In sea and air rescue, it is a major advantage to gain technical support as a complement to the human ear, ” said Nicander.
Technology designed to convert speech to text using neural networks has made immense strides in recent years and it is extremely pleasing to be able to use technology for social benefit
‘‘
The Swedish Maritime Administration’s sea and air traffic control centre JRCC in Gothenburg, Sweden, works around the clock throughout the year to assist those in distress and lead rescue efforts at sea and in the air. Interception depends on the operator’s ability to perceive the individual emergency
call that is often made via a radio transmission with low audibility. If the system detects an emergency call, this is noted in the operator’s interface. During the current stage of the project, the Heimdall system will be tested on emergency calls that the rescue leaders observe through interception designed to calibrate and further improve reception. The company Tenfifty is responsible for the technical AI input in the project. “Technology designed to convert speech to text using neural networks has made immense strides in recent years and it is extremely pleasing to be able to use technology for social benefit”, says David Fendrich, CTO at Tenfifty. Maranics AB is responsible for building user interfaces within the project and creating the data capture that goes beyond speech-to-text such as data on weather, ship information and position. The solution is based on pilots that the company has implemented and tested together with the DNVGL classification society.

Safety net falls Shipping stakeholders using satellite signals have been issued a warning. On 25 June, the UK withdrew from the EU’s EGNOS Safety of Life service and the EGNOS Working Agreements (EWAs), thereby losing the associated legal indemnity for users. There has been no change to the data transmitted by EGNOS satellites. “The UK’s precipitous withdrawal from statutory agreements on the use of the European satellite overlay system EGNOS will adversely impact several transportation systems” warned Cynthia Robinson, president of the Royal Institute of Navigation. She explained: “The recent withdrawal
of the legal indemnity for aviation EGNOS use in the UK could ultimately affect ships, autonomous vehicles and Beyond-VisualLine-Of-Sight (BVLOS) drones as well, unless a replacement solution can be secured quickly. “The shipping industry will need to consider appropriate solutions for UK waters as future maritime EGNOS Safety-of-Life services will no longer be made available to the UK in 2023. Possible future wider EGNOS V3 SoL services overlaying GPS and Galileo will also be denied to the UK.” She concluded: “The Royal Institute of Navigation is working closely with the UK

HYDROGEN PROJECT SUPPORT The North of Scotland Hydrogen Programme ‘Distilleries Project’ study examined the feasibility of the Programme’s plan for a green hydrogen hub in the Cromarty Firth that will supply distilleries in the region with hydrogen at a competitive price to help decarbonise their heating and processes in making whisky. The study identified multiple sites around the Firth deemed fit to host a 35MW electrolyser facility by 2024, producing up to 14t of green hydrogen per day. Bob Buskie, chief executive of the Port of Cromarty Firth, one of the programme partners, said: “This is fantastic news for both the Cromarty Firth and for the country’s ambitions to become a leading hydrogen nation, with targets for Scotland to generate 5GW of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen by 2030 - enough to power the equivalent of 1.8 million homes. “Phase 1 of the electrolyser could be up and running, and the first hydrogen produced, by 2024 in what will be one of the biggest electrolysers in the UK. Such a facility will be a game changer not only for industries across the Highlands and Scotland, but also for the UK and internationally as we will be able to export green hydrogen to energy markets around the globe.” RENEWABLE ENERGY POTENTIAL The report said the Cromarty Firth’s suitability was boosted by a large regional concentration of renewable energy potential, including future offshore wind development sites which would be able to supply the volume of clean electricity needed for the electrolyser. Coupled with this substantial offshore wind resource is an already significant existing infrastructure in the Cromarty Firth, as well as a proven track record of success in renewables, an experienced local supply chain and extremely strong links to industry, transport and heat networks. The study proposes a phased development for the facility. Phase 1 would see the electrolyser in place by 2024 to meet local and distillery demands and to prove the technology at this scale. A second phase would lead to an expansion of

SHORE POWER SURGE A major shore power step has been taken at one European port The onshore power plant at the Port of Kiel’s Ostseekai cruise terminal has been officially inaugurated. The 16MW facility is expected to offer savings of approximately 8,000t of CO2 annually and can supply a cruise ship at Ostseekai and a ferry at the Schwedenkai terminal in parallel. “With this investment, which now enables shore power supply at a total of three locations in Kiel, the seaport should also be very far ahead in international comparison. The plant will save thousands of tonnes of CO2 and thus relieve the people in the state capital considerably,” said Dr Bernd Buchholz, Minister of Economics, Transport, Labour and Technology and Tourism of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. AIDA Cruises’ AIDAsol was the first cruise ship to be connected to the shore power supply system on 16th June. The ship is to receive shore power in regular operation at Kiel with immediate effect.
Siemens supplied the core electrical and electronic elements of the onshore power plant. The ShoreCONNECT mobile carrier system for transferring the power cables to the ship comes from Stemmann-Technik, a subsidiary of the Wabtec Corporation The new onshore power plant has also been supplying electricity to Stena Line ferries daily at the Schwedenkai since the beginning of the year. This saves about 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year at the Schwedenkai alone. For every cruise ship that is supplied with shore power, there is an additional saving of about 45t of CO2 on average at the Ostseekai.
In addition, since May 2019, the Color Line ferries at the Norwegenkai have been connected to the shoreside grid, resulting in a further 3,000t less CO2 per year. The state of Schleswig-Holstein supported the construction of the €13.5m plant with about €9m and successfully lobbied at the federal level for a reduction of the EEG apportionment on shore power. In its first full year of operation, the Port of Kiel plans to supply 70 cruise calls with shore power. Kiel’s Lord Mayor, Dr Ulf Kämpfer said another onshore power plant is being planned for the Ostuferhafen. Siemens supplied the core electrical and electronic elements of the onshore power plant. The ShoreCONNECT mobile carrier system for transferring the power cables to the ship comes from Stemmann-Technik, a subsidiary of the Wabtec Corporation.

Bespoke tug berth In a limited time window, Inland and Coastal Marina Systems recently designed and manufactured a bespoke berth for a new tugboat at Port of Portland, UK. Following its purchase from Sanmar in Turkey, the vessel went straight into dry dock to be painted in her new company colours and arrived in Portland in early April. With space tight and time short to prepare a berth for the 287T tug, Portland Harbour Authority approached ICMS to design a bespoke solution. To accommodate the new vessel within the existing operational pontoons, and factor in its higher freeboard, ICMS manufactured a unique 21.5m

SOLAR PAVING HELPING PORT’S CARBON FOOTPRINT Spain’s Port of Valencia is trialling new solar panels installed on the ground, claimed to be walkable by pedestrians and vehicles
8 The solar paving has been developed by SOLUM
This initiative opens the door to taking advantage of large port spaces to generate solar energy and positions Valenciaport as a benchmark in SmartPorts. A total of 24 passable solar tiles have been installed on the north dock of the Port of Valencia with a power of more than 1 kWp in just six square metres of surface area, with an energy production equivalent to half the annual consumption of a three-person household, which will avoid emitting 5.7 tonnes of CO2 per year. “It is one more of the bets that we are developing in Valenciaport in cutting-edge technological proposals that provide the site with green and clean energy in our commitment to decarbonisation, while we support entrepreneurship to act as a catalyst for innovation that generates new businesses and opportunities for young talent,” explained Federico Torres, head of Ecological Transition of the Port Authority of Valencia. The solar paving has been developed by SOLUM, one of the start-ups selected by the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) and
the Valenciaport Foundation within the framework of the EIT Climate-KIC Accelerator, which responded to the challenge launched by Valenciaport on innovation in photovoltaic installations in ports and which, on reaching phase 3 of the accelerator, has received financial support of 30,000 euros. SOLUM’s Director of Product and Innovation, Luis Muñoz, indicated that “this solar floor is 100% walkable with a design integrated into the urban architecture that guarantees antislip, with regenerative properties and a greater resistance than concrete that makes it resistant to loads, impacts and scratches. The system generates clean energy thanks to the high-efficiency photovoltaic cells integrated in its interior”. This innovative photovoltaic solution can be installed both in pedestrian areas and in areas with occasional traffic. These solar panels are much more resistant to erosion and easy maintenance and, in a place like the Port of Valencia, they also have the advantage of being able to produce energy in areas where a panel could not be installed.
Crane rail extension DP World has completed its crane rail extension in the Port of Southampton which will allow the world’s largest cranes to service the full length of the quay. Part of DP World’s £40m investment this year in Britain’s second largest container terminal, the 120m crane rail extension has foundations reaching 26 metres below the ground and took 16 weeks to build. It will facilitate the movement along the quay of some of the terminal’s 12 Liebherr cranes which stand up to 130m high, with flexibility

being the highest priority for the equipment. The new configuration is designed to maximise utilisation and will save customers’ time by speeding up quayside loading and unloading. Together with the granting of permission for a third berth to be dredged down to a depth of more than 15 metres, and the addition of a second empty containers park scheduled for September, the investment will take Southampton up to the next level as a smart logistics hub.

GERMANS DEVELOP SMART COMMERCIAL UV SYSTEMS In Kiel, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TMS) and partners in industry and science have been awarded Government funding totalling €13.2 million for the second phase of the Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM) project to develop an unmanned, underwater workboat for commercial use. Total project costs are put at some €35 million with Berlin putting up €22 million. Handing over the latest funding German Maritime Coordinator Norbert Brackmann said “... Pipelines and cables run on the seabed. Maritime infrastructure needs to be built and maintained. With the MUM vehicles ... this work is safer, faster and also more cost-effective”. The MUM concept has been under study since 2017 and is seen as setting a new standard for future unmanned underwater work. It is planned to build and test a modular demonstrator vehicle of about 25m length from 2023. Planned is a system for a variety of civil maritime applications including payload transport and deployment, the exploration of hard-to-reach sea areas like the Arctic, as well as offshore applications. The planned underwater systems will have electrical main energy and be powered by emission-free hydrogen fuel cells. Where needed, power supply can be supported by a Lithium-ion battery module. Regardless of wind and weather, MUMs will work around the clock and 365 days a year. They will, reportedly, also be tailor-made. In Wilhelmshaven, scientists at that port city’s Jade University of Applied Sciences have meanwhile unveiled an autonomous underwater vehicle system for commercial use. It has been developed during a four year research project called EITAMS funded with €1.5 million by the Volkswagen Foundation.

Two research projects involving the development of autonomous underwater vehicles for commercial maritime applications have drawn attention and official funding in Germany, writes Tom Todd
The university said hydraulic structures like port and offshore facilities placed complex demands on maintenance and monitoring which could often be solved with remotecontrolled or autonomous underwater vehicles. It unveiled a test platform based on an autonomously operating surface vehicle which controls a ‘swarm’ of self-drive, interlinked underwater vehicles. In further research, university departments with differing specialities worked on sub-areas of the main project. One looked at vehicle operation in unknown or hard to reach underwater areas while another developed intelligent strategies for UVs to react to unexpected situations.

25 USBL SYSTEM INTEGRATIONS German ROV manufacturer Mariscope Meerestechnik’s recent delivery of an applied acoustics Alpha USBL system marks a significant milestone in their partnership with applied acoustics and the aae technologies group This delivery is the 25th such system that Mariscope have acquired for integration into their range of subsea vehicles. Established in 1994 by Christian Haag, Mariscope has become a leading name in the field of ocean robotics and like aae technologies, proudly promotes its independence and flexibility. In a relationship spanning several years, aae technologies and Mariscope have developed a good understanding of each other’s businesses, enabling the continual and seamless supply of appropriate USBL systems for Mariscope’s engineers to incorporate into the ROV’s at factory level. The bulk of these systems have been shipped to Mariscope’s South American subsidiary, Mariscope Ingenieria based in Puerto Montt, Chile, in support of the region’s burgeoning aquaculture industry, an industry that relies heavily on ROV intervention for the inspection and cleaning of salmon enclosures and their mooring lines. USBL tracking is a critical feature of these inspections as it gives the operators and service providers real time positional data of the vehicles as they carry out their surveillance.

Explore an ancient shipwreck Innovative technology is enabling keen historians to virtually explore the 2500-year-old Peristera shipwreck. The prototype uNdersea visiOn sUrveillance System (NOUS) offers real-time video footage of the wooden vessel, which sank in the late 5th century BC off the Greek island of Alonnisos in the Aegean Sea. NOUS relies on MacArtney’s underwater pluggable electrical SubConn connectors for the steady performance of the underwater camera, video and lighting systems installed onsite. Hans-Jørgen Hansen, sales director, ocean science, at MacArtney, said: “We, at MacArtney, are extremely pleased to be able to help protect a site of cultural heritage. This solution gives the entire world access to see and to follow - but not to touch.” Continuous monitoring NOUS is capable of continually monitoring an underwater area of interest using artificial intelligence (AI). This eliminates the need for a human operator to perform tasks like object detection, image classification, etc. The system works on a machine-learned algorithm that can recognise any intruder and send an alarm. It provides real-time video of the wreck site, streamed via five underwater cameras. Other features of the prototype, powered by solar energy, include recognition

OPTIMISTIC SEARCH FOR COIN... SOMEWHERE MID ATLANTIC A trio of adventurers has announced a modern-day, deep sea treasure hunt to find a coin that changed worldwide communications forever Founders of one of the world’s first subsea cable recycling companies, Sebastian Stephens and Russell Parsons, along with team member Richard Wills, will be joined by a captain and crew as they set off on the ambitious adventure. The voyage will mark the hunt for an historic piece of treasure hidden in deep ocean waters - a coin that was embedded into the world’s first transatlantic cable which paved the way for the invention of the internet and other technologies we enjoy today, and indeed increasingly rely on amidst a global pandemic. The intrepid trio have pledged to embark on the ambitious expedition to find the special sixpence, placed at the core of the subsea cable laid over 150 years ago, in 1858, with herculean effort by visionary entrepreneur Cyrus West Field. They plan to set off in June, around the anniversary of the original voyage taken by Cyrus and his team. A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to help fund the voyage, with the ambition of raising a minimum target of £40,000, to allow the team to fund the necessities of the trip including a captain and crew, an extended ship lease and indeed the equipment required to retrieve a coin from the bottom of the ocean. Setting off from the Irish coast, Sebastian, Russell, Richard and their team will head toward Newfoundland in Canada, mirroring the original route taken by the legendary Cyrus West Field back in 1858.
For good luck, Cyrus welded a sixpence into a joint in the cable somewhere in the mid-Atlantic. It’s a piece of history that’s almost been forgotten, but we’re determined to retell Cyrus’ story
‘‘
Leader of the treasure hunt, Sebastian Stephens explains; “Cyrus West Field connected the Old World to the New World for the first time ever in history over 150 years ago. Achieving what many thought was impossible, Cyrus laid a cable from Nova Scotia, Canada all the way to Ireland. He helped to connect the UK and US, which resulted in the longtime Anglo-American relationship still evident today. He continues; “For good luck, Cyrus welded a sixpence into a joint in the cable somewhere in the mid-Atlantic. It’s a piece of history that’s almost been forgotten, but we’re determined to retell Cyrus’ story. We’re setting out to find the coin and remind the world where global communications began. You don’t often get the chance to touch history, especially the stories submerged under the sea, but Field’s work took blood, sweat and tears, and we want to shine a light on how pivotal this moment in time was.” In a nod to the story of the cable and coin’s creation, the team also plan to use their expertise in subsea cable recycling, to
recover some of the out of service cable to create celebratory souvenirs for investors in their crowdfunding campaign. Russell explains; “Alongside others, the Smithsonian Museum and Research Organisation collected and displayed much of the original excess cable, following Cyrus’ incredible achievement. US luxury jewellery firm, Tiffany’s, turned some of the cable into souvenir items such as letter openers, paperweights and walking cane handles. We want to bring that part of the story to life again too, and ensure it continues to live on, so we will be following suit and offering our investors a chance to own either part of the cable, or a newly created piece of artwork made from the cable itself, so that our crowdfunding investors get to own a small piece of treasure of their own.” The voyage is also being commended by Erick W Contag, Executive Chairman of GlobeNet and President of the SubOptic Association - the non-profit association active in the international undersea communications industry and global authority on the submarine cable community. Erick adds; “Today, 99% of communications still take place via undersea cables, so we have a lot to thank Cyrus West Field for. Furthermore, the [US] FCC estimate that over $10 trillion of transactional value are transmitted every day across our subsea cables - greater than the combined GDP of Japan, Germany, and Australia. The cable not only connected nations, it allowed bankers to benefit from real-time exchange rates. The cable is the reason why bankers today still call the dollar-sterling pairing ‘The Cable’. After decades spent building data networks and laying underwater cables, Sebastian Stephens and Russell Parsons reversed their roles in 2009 when they co-founded SubSea Environmental Services, a recycling business buying, recovering and processing out of service undersea cable. They are both still actively involved in the business as shareholders and advisors. The Find The Coin Crowdfunding Campaign has launched on crowdfunding site indiegogo.
