Busy pandemic

UK’s Port of Sunderland reported an 85% rise in exports during the second quarter of the year, as it helped keep goods flowing in and out of the country during the pandemic. From April to June, the port handled some 71,748 tonnes of cargo set for export - compared to just 38,661 tonnes for the same period last year – with vessel destinations around the North and Baltic Seas.

Legal appointment Tony Goldsmith, partner, master mariner and marine casualty specialist, has been appointed as Head of Marine and Trade at London law firm Hill Dickinson. Mr Goldsmith will succeed the firm’s current Head of Marine, David Wareing, who is due to retire in the autumn having held the position since 2017.

C-Job Naval Architects, the global independent ship design and engineering company, opened an office in Gdansk, Poland this July.

The new entity will expand on the company’s existing activities and pursue new markets particularly in the Baltic and Scandinavian region.

MAN RESTRUCTURE WILL COST 2600 JOBS The restructure of German marine propulsion company MAN Energy Solutions will mean the loss of up to 2600 manufacturing jobs, but owners Volkswagen have agreed not to sell the concern until after 2024.

MAN Energy Solutions is the part of MAN that produces the slow and medium speed engines.

MAN Truck and Bus AG, which produces the high speed marine diesels is unaffected.

The executive board and employee representatives of MAN Energy Solutions have agreed on a joint paper outlining the key points of its restructuring. In return for the job losses,

concessions related to labour costs have been agreed upon that will allow the company to achieve its restructuring objectives.

The company will reduce the size of its Berlin site and operations here will be focused on the production of components. It will also keep its service business in Hamburg intact. It will, however, halt steam turbine production, which is also conducted there. Restructuring measures have been agreed upon for the Augsburg and Oberhausen sites, and the organizations in Denmark, France, England, and Switzerland will also be streamlined.

The Volkswagen Group supports the agreements outlined in the paper, expecting that the necessary prerequisites for implementation will be successfully finalized by the end of 2020. Once this has happened Volkswagen will suspend its plans to sell MAN Energy Solutions until the finalization of the restructuring efforts. This will apply at least until the end of 2024. The Volkswagen Group has further agreed that the company will remain part of the group until at least the end of 2026 if it achieves a profitability target of 9% EBIT on a consistent basis by that date.

NETWORK GRANT FUNDING FOR MARINE INNOVATION Grant funding will help realise a new network of high-speed mobile data connectivity for marine innovation off the coast of Plymouth.

Plymouth’s Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC) has been awarded GB£1.8m of grant funding to build a communication system as part of the MBTC’s Smart Sound Plymouth testing and proving ground, known as Smart Sound Connect. This will be the UK’s first 5G testbed for marine innovation, providing high speed communications on the water and connecting the existing network of sensors, which includes scientific data buoy networks and autonomous vessels.

Rob Watson, MBTC director, said: “Securing the funding for this network is a very significant step for the Marine Business Technology Centre and our partners. This will be the first 5G testbed focussed purely on smart marine technologies and, with the support of our research partners, we are now able to offer an enhanced end-to-end innovation service that rivals the best in the world.”

The funding has been supplied by the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s (HotSW LEP) Growth Deal Digital Extension 2020 programme.

FREIGHT-FOCUSED BALTIC CONNECTION From 13 August ferry company Stena Line will start a new freight focused connection between Latvia, Sweden and Germany by adding a port-call in Karlskrona on the existing ferry route between Liepaja and Travemünde.

This will enable more effective trade and transport opportunities between the Baltic countries and southern Scandinavia.

“We see an increasing demand for sea transportation in the Baltic region. This is an expansive region where Stena Line already has a

strong presence and we are pleased to expand our customer offering. Our intention is to increase the frequency and capacity even further going forward.”, says Erik Thulin, Trade Director Baltic Sea North.

The route between Liepaja and Travemünde is operated by the two Danish flagged RoPax vessels Stena Gothica and Urd, both 171 metres long. The new weekly port-call in Karlskrona will initially be in the direction Liepaja-Travemünde on Thursday evenings.

BRIEFS 759 MW Project

Crosswind, a consortium of Shell and the Dutch utility Eneco, had secured the right to develop Hollandse Kust Noord offshore windfarm off the coast of the North Holland province.

The consortium will build 69 Siemens Gamesa turbines of 11MW each.

DOGGER INSTALLATION CONTRACT AWARDED Dogger Bank Wind Farm and Jan De Nul Group have announced the signing of the final contract for the transport and installation of the GE Haliade-X offshore wind turbines at Dogger Bank A and B. Turbine delivery and installation at the first two phases of Dogger Bank Wind Farm in 2023 will be the first assignment for what will be the world’s largest Offshore Jack-Up Installation Vessel owned by Jan De Nul Group, the Voltaire.

The 3.6GW Dogger Bank Wind Farm, which is being delivered in the North Sea in three 1.2GW phases, is set to be the world’s largest offshore wind farm when complete and is a joint venture between SSE Renewables and Equinor.

When complete, Dogger Bank will generate enough energy to power over 4.5 million homes every year - around

5% of the UK’s electricity needs.

Dogger Bank Wind Farm secured 3.6GW of offshore wind contracts in the UK Government’s 2019 contracts for difference auctions.

Plans have been announced to develop a high-end laboratory to deliver metallurgy inspection and testing, fuel testing, paint analysis and non-destructive testing.

Technical and scientific consultancy Brookes Bell said its new 8,000 sq. ft facility is designed to deliver a more comprehensive service to its maritime clients and will support entry into new markets. The facility will be commissioned in north west England and will come on-line in October 2020. It will house an inspection and testing facility, a light industrial/ engineering space and offices.

Ray Luukas, chief technical officer at Brookes Bell, said: “As our new laboratory comes on-line, we will create a high-end metallurgical consultancy and technical unit which will include non-destructive testing as well as paint analysis and fuel testing.”

The laboratory will also house a new fuel testing facility which will test fuel to ISO 8217 standards to highlight

substandard samples and to help identify the causes and origins of fuel-related problems. Paint analysis to investigate coating failures will also be conducted.

The HM Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter base at Prestwick, on Scotland’s west coast near Glasgow, has responded to 1,500 calls since 2016. One highlight was the rescue of a 22-year-old male surfer found 13 miles off the coast of Campbeltown in 2017. He had clung to his board for 32 hours.

MegaWatt push

The new EU Strategy on Offshore Renewable Energy must include a target of 100MW of ocean energy installed in Europe by 2025 says industry body Ocean Energy Europe. This would be enough to power 100,000 European homes a year.

The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) has taken delivery of HMCS Harry DeWolf, its first of six new full-electric power and propulsion ice class patrol vessel with combat package. GE supplied the high-voltage electric power system.

A German TV show recently arranged a race between Cologne and Düsseldorf between a Tesla Model 3 on the busy roads and a Candela Seven electric boat blasting down the Rhine.

The idea was to show that waterborne, electric high-speed ferries can be a viable alternative to the Autobahn.

The hydrofoil Candela Seven flies above the surface, which reduces friction from the water by 80 percent and gives a range of 92km at 25 knots (46km/h).

Top speed is 30 knots (55 km/h).

A full charge of the 40kWh battery costs 95 percent less than filling up the tank of a petrol powered, planing boat.

The stretch from Cologne to Düsseldorf is about 45km on land, but 55km on the river - a distance that no other electric boat could cover at speeds of more than 20 knots.

For the Tesla Model 3 heavy traffic on the outskirts of both cities makes it hard to drive the

distance in less than an hour.

The Candela Seven, on the other hand, could go full speed, but anyone driving on the Rhine faces other obstacles. Heavy barge traffic creates wakes that would force most planing boats to slow down. The Candela Seven, however, simply flew over the wakes thanks to its computer-

controlled foil system that detects waves in front of the boat and automatically adjusts the foil position 100 times per second.

Though Jotun’s recent robotic developments seem surprising, the seeds were sown back in 2011, “when we started to look outside the paint can”, said Geir Axel Oftedahl. The goal was simple: consistently, rather than intermittently, clean hulls.

“We began to investigate methods for evaluating impact - and in hindsight, what we did was go from selling antifouling coatings to offering measurable performance,” he explained.

From Jotun’s ‘proactive cleaning’ concept sprang the HullSkater, a squat, remotely operated robot on magnetic wheels.

Developed in partnership with Kongsberg, Semcon, DNVGL and others it “catches the biofouling before it gets to be a problem”, he said; long before speed is affected “and before biofouling - and invasive species - get a foothold”. This also means early stage slime can be removed with soft brushes without damaging the Skater’s counterpart, a robust, specially designed antifouling coating.

Great idea, but not so easy to accomplish: Oftedahl admitted that the initial “grand plan

had to be thrown out almost on the first day”.

But like a barnacle, “we clung stubbornly to what we wanted to achieve - even though for quite a long time there was almost weekly revision to how we got there”.

Scratch the surface, and it’s clear the innovation demands sophisticated underpinnings - and partners. To start with, Jotun’s Hull Skating Solution (HSS) needs to be responsively deployed, so an algorithm combines the route and data such as water depth, temperature, nutrients, salinity and so on to yield a fouling prediction, able to trigger a signal for launch at anchorage. Control is then handed to a remote operator in a Jotun base, though that, in turn, required a costeffective transmission of information, necessitating input from Telenor.

Further, “remote driving, recognition and classifying the types of fouling takes more training than you might think”, Oftedahl added.

“Fresh paint wouldn’t return all the necessary information,” he explained, so it’s been trialled on Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Maersk and Berge Bulk vessels to

demonstrate interaction effects after years of active service. The results are convincing: the expected maximum speed loss for protected vessels is just 1% over a standard five-year drydocking period, with a minimum fuel cost saving of 12.5% - and that’s against a typical vessel’s average performance rather than a cherry-picked comparison.

Importantly, “there’s a feedback loop to the probability algorithm... which will allow it to be updated”, said Oftedahl. And, he added, there will be further innovation, including increased automation and using machine learning to predict the need for maintenance of the HullSkater.

Finally, the technology stands to be of scientific, as well as commercial use: “As the Skater moves up and down the hull, it can collect data throughout the water column to around 20m depths.” As Jotun supplies more than 20% of the world fleet, there should be a broad uptake of the HSS: in turn it should yield a cost-effective, thorough method for gaining information on the ocean’s changing patterns.

JACKETS ARRIVE FOR MORAY EAST OFFSHORE WINDFARM Moray Offshore Windfarm (East) Ltd (known as ‘Moray East’) has welcomed the arrival of OHT’s heavy transport vessel, ‘Hawk’ at Global Energy’s facility at the Port of Nigg The vessel arrived with nine wind turbine and one offshore substation platform substructures or ‘jackets’, each standing up to 80m high.

The jackets will be offloaded at Nigg, where they will undergo the final preparations before they are loaded onto the jack-up vessel Seajacks Scylla which will undertake their installation at sea, more than 25km from shore in the Moray Firth.

Moray East has appointed a consortium of DEME and Smulders for designing, manufacturing and installing the jackets; in turn Global Energy has been subcontracted to provide facilities at the Port of Nigg to support the installation works, and Offshore Heavy Transport (OHT) has been subcontracted for shipping vessel provision.

UK- based Seajacks Ltd has been subcontracted for installation vessel provision.

The Port of Nigg and the Port of Cromarty Firth are providing the onshore facilities from which the offshore installation work will be undertaken.

A total of 103 jackets are being installed in the Moray Firth to provide foundations for 100 offshore wind turbine generators and three offshore substation platforms.

To get the electricity to customers onshore, three subsea cables will be laid which will connect the three offshore substations with underground onshore cables at Inverboyndie, and thence on to the new substation currently under construction south of New Deer, which will make the power generated available to consumers via the National Grid.

Commenting, Moray East Project Director Marcel Sunier said: “Because we are able to work at such large scale that we have been able to make significant cost reductions in the cost of produced power. The Moray East offshore wind farm will make a major contribution to the post Covid recovery producing plentiful low-cost, low carbon power.”

The Port of Nigg is an ideal staging port for the Moray East Project due to its deep-water access and the high ground bearing strength of its quay and storage areas.

Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) explained that the 200t floating crane vessel Baltic Lift was used to carry the hydraulic dredger with a multi-tool to identify objects and remove them from beneath the water. For optimal safety, all objects are recovered remotely.

Christian Jonas, site manager dredging at HPA, said: “We’ve never used anything as big as this in these kind of water depths or as extensively as we’re going to use this one.”

one unit. “One of them is a big dredger which can flush out material. Another is a grip used to grab hold of objects and if that object is not some old ordnance but something like a steel girder then the multi-tool can remove the object,” said HPA. The multi-tool was developed specifically for the work to adjust the shipping channel.

This is the first time HPA has used the technology in the port.

Before the hydraulic dredger was used the dredging area was scanned using echo technology and any ordnance identified and removed.

At Blenheim Palace, Land & Water is currently undertaking essential works to the Grand Cascade Apron which feeds the lakes from the River Glyme. Finalizing route for fibre optic cable Fugro has begun a pre-installation and route engineering survey project to support their client, Xtera, on a major fibre-optic cable installation between Norway and the UK. Xtera has engaged Fugro to help make the NO-UK cable system one of the most secure data traffic routes across the North Sea by advising on final route selection and specifying the required burial conditions to minimise risk of cable damage from anchoring and trawling.

COFFERDAM WORK COMMENCES AT OFFSHORE ENERGY SITE The development of one of the UK’s leading deep-water offshore energy bases has reached a major new milestone Work has begun on the building of a temporary works cofferdam at Northumberland Energy Park Phase 1 in Blyth, in Northumberland, North East England - which will enable the construction of a new dock.

Northumberland Energy Park is part of Energy Central, the UK’s unique port-based service, investment and growth cluster for companies operating in the offshore energy and subsea markets. Energy Central is a partnership between Advance Northumberland, Port of Blyth, Northumberland County Council and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult. It offers nearly 200 HA of strategic, quay linked development sites.

PUBLIC SECTOR INVESTMENT The new dock, which is being funded by a £32 million public sector investment is an extension of the current dock facilities - and work is set to be completed on the project by May 2021.

The dock will allow companies locating to Northumberland Energy Park Phase 1 to benefit from direct quay access to a 50m x 210m deep water berth on the River Blyth. Dredging work will increase its current depth of 5.0 LAT to 9.0 LAT, and the dock will have jack up barge vessel capability.

Nearby Battleship Wharf, which is also part of the Energy Central cluster, offers an additional four deep water berths, and there are additional marine facilities at The Port of Blyth, which has access to open sea within 0.5 NM. Northumberland Energy Park Phase 1 is situated on the site once occupied by the Blyth Power Station facility. Further development is planned for the 35 HA Northumberland Energy Park Phase 2 and the 95 HA Northumberland Energy Park Phase 3.

STRATEGICALLY LOCATED The site is strategically located for market access to offshore energy developments in the North Sea, including Round 3 Zone offshore wind projects at Dogger Bank, Hornsea and the Firth of Forth.

Richard Wearmouth, Chair of Advance Northumberland said, “The commencement of work on the cofferdam is a huge step forward in the development of Northumberland Energy Park - and the new dock will further enhance the vast array of facilities available at Energy Central for businesses servicing the offshore wind sector.

“With Northumberland Energy Park Phase 1, we are building on Blyth’s heritage in power generation, transforming a site previously associated with the fossil fuel industry and turning it into a major asset for the renewable energy sector, while supporting the UK’s shift to clean growth.

Helen Golightly, Chief Executive of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, (North East LEP), said, “Offshore wind is highlighted in the region’s Strategic Economic Plan as being an area of opportunity for growth, with the potential to create more and better jobs in the region.

“Northumberland Energy Park will play a key role in

exploiting this opportunity which is why we have invested more than £19 million into the Phase 1 site remediation and infrastructure, which includes £4.4 million of Local Growth Fund funding. Energy Central is located on the East Coast of the UK, midway between Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth. North East England is a lead UK region for offshore energy and is recognised by the UK Government as having Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (CORE) status. It has a welldeveloped engineering supply chain and a highly skilled workforce with strong expertise in the engineering and manufacturing sectors.

The Advance Northumberland team are exhibiting with Port of Blyth as Energy Central at Global Offshore Wind V-Fest from July 22 to 24 and can provide further information on Northumberland Energy Park Phase 1.

SOUTHSEA’S COASTAL DEFENCE SCHEME GETS FUNDING Plans for state-of-the-art new coastal defences in Southsea, on the UK’s south coast have been given the green light as the government has awarded nearly £100m of funding Funding from the Environment Agency was the final hurdle the Portsmouth City Council project had to overcome and work is now set to start on site later this year. The scheme is being delivered by VSBW (a consortium of Volker Stevin and Boskalis Westminster).

Cllr David Ashmore, the council’s Cabinet Member for Environment & Climate Change, said: “Securing this funding is a testament to the hard work put in by the team over the last seven years. We are now able to replace the outdated defences and protect Southsea residents and businesses from the risk of flooding for generations to come.”

PROTECTION The proposed scheme will protect over 10,000 residential and 700 non-residential properties in Southsea from the risk of coastal flooding. It also aims to bring more economic benefits to the area, including attracting further tourism and events to the area and support local businesses and employment through the scheme itself to name a few.

Cllr Hugh Mason, Cabinet Member for Planning Policy & City Development, said: “This is excellent news and it is the culmination of many years of planning and careful negotiation.

The scheme has been challenging because we had to plan not just to build sea defences but to plan them in a way which would protect and enhance the unique character of the Southsea seafront, so loved by both local people and visitors.”

As part of a six-year programme worth £2.6bn to protect 300,000 homes across England, the Environment Agency is supporting the Southsea Coastal Scheme with £97.8m of funding following on from planning permission being granted in December and now final approval from HM Treasury.

7 YEARS WORK The project team has worked closely with the Environment Agency on a local as well as a national level to secure approval, despite unprecedented demands placed upon central government finances at this time. It is the culmination of seven years of work including wide ranging public consultation to help develop and shape the scheme.

Cllr Judith Smyth, who sits on the project’s cross-party working group, said: “I am delighted government has

awarded this funding. It will be great for residents to start seeing the delivery of the plans they have contributed towards over the years and a real boost for Southsea.”

The first phase of work to start will be between Long Curtain Moat and Clarence Pier, while detailed designs for other sections are being developed.

Cllr Luke Stubbs, another member of the project’s crossparty working group, said: “This project is huge for Southsea and Portsmouth as a whole. It’s the biggest local authority delivered coastal defence project in the country. It’s great that work will be underway soon and as plans are developed for the other phases residents will have more opportunities to get involved.”

YELLOW RIVER PROVIDES TEST FOR UNMANNED TECHNOLOGY A recent first full survey of the world’s most sediment laden river has used a combination of unmanned aerial and surface vessels With a total length of 5,464km, the Yellow River is the second-longest river in China. After running through the Loess Plateau in its middle section it becomes the most sediment-laden river in the world. The Yellow river runs through nine Chinese cities affecting the daily lives of the tens of thousands of people who live alongside it.

Monitoring changes in underwater terrain and studying the pattern of river evolution can provide important data support for river management and flood control, to better protect the ecology of the watershed.

However, due to technical limitations and harsh environment conditions, the Yellow River watershed has not been meticulously mapped. The waters are complex with rapid currents and many shallows. With traditional measurement methods, it’s difficult to install survey equipment and rent a suitable workboat. There are also the additional risks to personnel associated with on-water operations.

Recently China’s Second Topographic Survey Team of the Ministry of Natural Resources used intelligent equipment such as unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned surface vessels to carry out integrated multi-element topographic surveys in the Qiankun Bay section of the river.

The underwater topographic survey was carried out using OceanAlpha’s ME120 autonomous surface vessel platform equipping a multi-beam sounding system.

The ME120 USV adopts a modular design consisting of three pieces that can be quickly disassembled and assembled. It can work automatically and manoeuvre into water as shallow as 0.45 metres.

The transducer and sound velocity meter of the multi-beam system were installed in a lifting apparatus that could be lowered and raised remotely from the shore station. There was no need for personnel to stay on board for retracting operations.

This lifting mechanism reduces the risk of equipment damage and better guarantees the safety of personnel.

According to the real-time measured water depth and multi-beam span, the surveyor set up parallel survey lines and inspection lines with the base station software from the dock. The USV navigated according to the survey line

instructions, and the collected data was sent back to the shore-based control terminal in real-time.

The collected data delivered a high quality reflection of the topography of the river. The ME120 USV was also equipped with a high-precision inertial navigation system, which provided strong support for the seamless splicing of multibeam data and UAV data. After analysis and processing of both data streams, the team obtained high-quality integrated above water and underwater data of the Qiankun section.

Software expiry CodaOctopus has served an end of life notice on its Underwater Survey Explorer (USE) Version 5 and 6 and Version 2 of its Construction Monitoring System (CMS).

In addition, these versions are not supported on Windows 10 systems.

Its USE Version 8.x software is available for licensing on the company’s terms and conditions, as is its CMS Version 3.x. CMS is licensed as a solution and can only run with designated Coda Octopus sonars.

Additionally, due to obsolescence of a number of critical components on some of the company’s very early models of Echoscope and Echoscope C500 sonars products, a number of these earlier models are now obsolete.

The models affected are 0501, 0601, 0901, 1101, 1203, 1204, 1205, 1206, 1207, 1208, 1301. These are very early models of 8 years and above.

customer manager Nicolai Krøyer says: ‘The shipyard lived up to all our requirements, and at the same time they can deliver a tugboat that can operate on one engine as we sail back and forth to the ship to be towed while using both ship’s engines during towing.’ At 65tbp it will be 20t more powerful than the 40-year old Hermes it will replace and its firefighting system will allow it to assist East Jutland Fire Department with shoreside firefighting operations.

The second Uzmar success is an important order for two RAstar 3200W emergency response escort tugs for Directorate General of Coastal Safety for safety and security provision ‘at the highest level’ in the Turkish Strait and Maritime Jurisdiction Areas.

The 32m, 80tbp pair can be seen as an important reference for both Uzmar and the client where the emergency response element allows for a high-spec consideration, their duties stated as including: ship rescue, escort, towage services, towing and pushing, port services, firefighting and stand-by duties.

MJ has reported previously on Damen’s series of ‘next generation’ tugs and recently the ASD Tug 2312 bearing the number ‘01’ suffix in its yard number designation for this type and the name Jupiter was delivered to Iskes of IJmuiden and now bears the name Svitzer Jupiter as part of the Port Towage Amsterdam operation. The order was sealed at ITS 2018 in Marseille.

The ASD 2312 has several notable features qualifying it for the ‘Next Generation’ tag including shatter-proof Damen Safety Glass in the wheelhouse and twin-fin arrangement below the waterline. The 60tbp tug is IMO Tier III ready but it is its towing arrangement that catches the eye.

For towing over the bow and stern tugs will generally have independent winches forward and aft or perhaps a towing hook aft. Some may have provision for the tow line to be routed from the forward winch through a tunnel in the accommodation to the aft deck for towing over the stern.

Damen’s solution, described as a ‘one winch wonder’ is to reposition the double-drum winch further aft, integrated into the superstructure area beneath the wheelhouse.

This has naturally led to a different arrangement for the accommodation which is often located beneath the wheelhouse. The ASD Tug 2312 has a forecastle deck and an accommodation deck below the main deck with provision for six crew in four cabins and a mess/galley.

Sanmar describe the Boğaçay class ASD tug as its ‘flagship product’ with 40 now delivered worldwide and Rimorchiatori Salerno SrL, part of the Rimorchiatori Riuniti S.p.a group recently took delivery of the Arechi (ex Boğaçay XXXIV) an example of the RAmparts 2400SX design joining the Città di Salerno (ex Boğaçay XXXII) delivered to the same group in 2018. The owners state they are ‘... small, compact and powerful, ideal for a port like Salerno. We are very satisfied with the price/quality ratio of Sanmar tugboats.’

A Caterpillar/Kongsberg main engine and thruster arrangement provide 60tbp and Arechi has fifi 0.5 provision and is MLC and Italian flag compliant.

News from beyond Europe but worthy of note concerns delivery of YT 808, the first of six RAL Z-Tech 4500 tugs for the US Navy by Dakota Creek Industries of Washington. The series is based on the six Valiant (YT 802) class which have been in continuous operation since 2010 and follows feedback from skippers and also incorporating new navy requirements including the inclusion of EPA Tier 4 main engines.

A Caterpillar/Schottel main engine and thruster combination provides 40tbp for the 27.4m long vessels and standard fendering provisions are complimented by an extensive fendering arrangement underwater for operation with submarines along with new diagonal ‘D’ side fendering to push low freeboard barges.

Returning to Europe and order news, Turkey’s Uzmar Shipyards has confirmed two orders involving three RALdesigned tugs. A video conference was held between Uzmar and Port of Aarhus to sign the contract for a RAmparts 3000 tug, the vessel to be a more environmentally friendly and efficient version of the tug it will replace and due for delivery in 2021.

OUT WITH THE OLD IN WITH THE NEW FOR SANMAR A month seldom passes without MJ reporting news about Sanmar’s Robert Allan Ltd-designed tugs. Such vessels are developing rapidly, including bespoke variants based on standard models and with 15 designs in its catalogue the Sanmar, Doğançay and Ulupinar series, of which 31, 26 and 20 have been delivered respectively since 1995 are being discontinued.

Replacing them are what Sanmar call ‘a new breed of tug ...

Designs that meet today’s challenges of greater fuel efficiency, lower emissions and crew comfort without compromising on build quality and toughness.’ The three new designs are 18m, 19m and 22m in length but an indication of how these socalled ‘compact tugs’ have evolved without compromising power is where they offer bollard pulls up to 60 tons.

Smallest is the 18.7m Yeniçay class ASD, based on RAL’s RAscal 1800 design and suited for line-handling and smaller shiphandling tasks with scantlings in excess of minimum for any classification society.

Twin 970kW Caterpillar engines power Veth thrusters providing 30tbp. Towing is via a DMT winch forward and Data Hidrolik tow hook aft. Two double cabins are provided and twelve Yeniçay class have been delivered or are in production.

The Bozçay class is a conventional twin-screw design designated RApport 1900SX by RAL, vessel number six now under construction. Described by Sanmar as a ‘tough and versatile workhorse’ this 19m tug offers 30+tbp from an engine arrangement similar to the Yeniçay class with towing over the stern via a Data Hidrolik tow hook mounted on an aft tow bitt.

Finally, the Sirapinar class is aimed at harbour and coastal towing duties and intended for low manning while meeting under 24m rules. Designated RAmparts 2200 it is based on the Boğacay series but 2m shorter and 0.4m less in beam.

While capable of bollard pulls up to 60 tons the majority delivered so far have been 50tbp, number 18 in the series is currently under construction.

Twin 1,500kW Caterpillar main engines drive Schottel Z-drives and deck equipment includes a double-drum, 125t brake load DMT winch forward and tow hook aft with accommodation is provided to north European standards for five persons in three cabins.

Dutch tug training in South Africa Rotterdam-based Tug Training & Consultancy (TTC) has signed an MoU with South African Maritime Training Academy (SAMTRA) to train tug masters, ship pilots and captains.

Shiphandling tug operations involve increasingly sophisticated vessels with an increasing focus on safety and efficiency making training for all involved more important than ever. TTC’s agreement to develop a strategic partnership with SAMTRA links the former’s knowledge and experience with SAMTRA’s Cape Town facility including state-of-the-art simulators covering most areas of ship operation.

TTC states the focus on acquiring skills and knowledge requires ‘facilitators’ rather than ‘experts’, its trainers able to tutor staff on the spot following SAMTRA’s Critical Incident Stress Debriefing method. TTC is the only ISO 9001 certified tug training

When tugs attend a ship either arriving or departing from a port the pilot is the vital link between the vessel’s master and the tugs, so a clear understanding of each participant’s role and limitations are crucial for a safe evolution. TTC states that joint pilot, tug master training is requested more and more globally for both port and offshore training and that such team work activity is one of the key training programmes of TTC that will now be conducted at SAMTRA. David Wolfaardt, academic head of SAMTRA said: ‘We are very pleased that we can continue building asset value for our clients through integrated, innovative, education and training solutions.

BOLUDA BUSY AFTER KEY TOWAGE ACQUISITION

It is a year now since Boluda Towage Europe completed its acquisition of Kotug Smit Towage thereby expanding its activities in Europe to include the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and the UK with an additional 67 tugs in its fleet.

The logistics behind managing port arrivals, cargo handling and departures for ships are complex involving an array of marine service providers including shiphandling towage contractors whose involvement in the chain is a vital part of what makes for efficient and safe port operations.

The Joint Nautical Authority is made up of Rijkwaterstaat and the Flemish Agency for Maritime and Coastal Services (Coastal Division) and along with North Sea Port and local nautical service providers has expanded and intensified its existing work agreements in the interest of greater efficiency and more reliable planning for the total nautical chain including ports.

This includes expansion of the existing management area of Ghent-Terneuzen Canal to include Sloe Haven (Vlissingen Oost) and Braakmanhaven (on the left bank of the Scheldt adjacent to Terneuzen). Local anchorages are also included in the new area and parties to the work agreements have also been expanded to include more specifically, boatmen.

Peaks in shipping activities can lead to inefficiencies with two elements to optimising collaboration, the ship, and the port. The ship is required to indicate its intended arrival and departure time while the port along with its nautical services providers supply the shoreside and afloat infrastructure.

Port planning for a ship’s visit involves different phases, the reliability and accuracy of which depend on data provided by those involved. This has been bolstered by introduction of a strategic planning phase where the chain partners can coordinate their long-term capacity planning responding to peak situations, poor weather, congestion, and delays.

Multraship Towage & Salvage is the other major tug operator in the area and along with Boluda is supporting the works agreements together with DAB-Loodswezen, De Eendracht, the Joint National Authority, Montis Mooring, North Sea Port, Regionale Loodsencorporatie Scheldemonden, Vereigde Bootlieden Terneuzen and Vlissingse Bootliedenwacht.

Boluda Towage has reported its part in the North Sea Port nautical partnership, handling the world’s largest container ship and a rebranding for one of its deepsea tugs

of the world’s largest container ship at three stops on the north west Europe rotation of its maiden voyage, an operation involving eight tugs in total.

HMM Algeciras is vessel number one in a series of 12, 23,964teu capacity, 399m long container ships and was met

by Boluda’s ASD tugs Rotterdam and VB Cheetah when it arrived at Rotterdam World Gateway Terminal at Maasvlakte 2.

Following Its stop at Hamburg, Boluda was again on hand to meet HMM Algeciras with the tugs Union Hawk, Union Pearl and Union Eagle which assisted it to the Noordzee Terminal in Antwerp.

The vessel’s final stop involving Boluda’s assistance, including a firefighting water display was DP World’s London Gateway Terminal where it was met by the RotorTug RT Evolution along with the ASD tugs SD Dolphin and SD Seal.

Congratulating HMM on its new addition, Boluda stated it was ‘delighted to be a part of the maiden voyage’ and while not exactly a scientific or representative analysis of the assistance provided this snapshot tells us that a total bollard pull of 642t was utilised with an average of 80.25t per tug. Seven ASDs and one RotorTug were involved, three of the fleet built by Armon of Spain and five from the ways of Damen Shipyards.

Final news from Boluda involves the rebranding of its 104tbp anchor-handling tug Bremen Fighter now displaying Boluda’s logo and company colours. Built in Germany in 2004 as the Primus for Harms Bergung Transport it was one of eight similar tugs from the same yard and in 2011, as Bremen Fighter came under control of Unterweser Rederi (URAG) which in turn became a subsidiary of Boluda Towage Division in 2017.

It was recently located to its base in Rotterdam (Boluda Towage Europe) and manned by the same crew is available for deepsea and offshore towage. At the time of writing AIS data indicated it to be in Rotterdam having previously been working in the UK sector of the southern North Sea.

8 Terneuzen-based Multraship Towage & Salvage has carried out a double tow of ex French naval vessels to Ghent in Belgium for recycling.

Multraship’s Multratug 3 and Multratug 19 were deployed to Landévennec in France for the tow of the French naval vessels DuguayTrouin (D611) from Landévennec and the Loire (A615) from Brest with destination metal recycling company Galloo N.V. in Ghent, Belgium. Multratug 3 and 9 are both Damen ASD Tug 3213 tugs with bollard pulls of 95t and 83t according to company information.

VATTENFALL PROVIDES STEERING FOR WIND SUPPLY CHAIN Swedish energy group Vattenfall says in its new supply chain report that more businesses can supply new generation offshore wind projects if procurement is approached differently Key messages to the industry and government have been shaped by feedback from more than 580 companies that took part in over 20 Vattenfall events during planning for its 3.6GW Norfolk Vanguard and Norfolk Boreas developments off the east coast.

Vattenfall has produced a ‘wish list, aimed at bringing more businesses into the offshore wind supply chain to help the industry achieve 60% UK content by 2030.

ALL EARS Listening to supply chain feedback about how the system could work better for them, Vattenfall has already promised to share information early about potential opportunities, its contract strategy, be clear about its terms and conditions and facilitate sector-wide collaboration.

It hopes other developers will follow and work together in an environment conducive to long-term investment planning and investment. The report will now to be shared across government, developers, Tier 1 and 2 companies and the rest of the supply chain.

Rob Lilly, Vattenfall’s supply chain manager, said: “Our interaction with the supply chain has demonstrated the collective desire to deliver innovative, efficient, sustainable advances in technology for the next generation of renewable energy generating projects, while also contributing to the goals of the Offshore Wind Sector Deal, UK industrial strategy and clean growth.”

“The over-riding message from established and potential supply chain companies is that they would benefit from longer term planning and better understanding of how the sector works as a whole.”

60% TARGET To achieve the Offshore Wind Sector Deal target of 60% UK content by 2030, “top down bottom up” commitment and action was needed across the sector, the report states.

This would need developers to engage earlier and better with a collaborative and more ‘joined-up’ supply chain.

Vattenfall is hoping for consent in June and November to build the Norfolk Vanguard and Norfolk Boreas projects, which together will power 3.9m homes. It has worked extensively with supply chain companies in a series of workshops and Meet the Buyer sessions in Norfolk, and Kent for its Thanet Extension project, since 2018.

To create the ‘wish list’ for the report, it brought together more than 60 businesses at Lowestoft last November, introducing Tier 1 companies to small and medium-sized businesses in the East Anglia cluster to learn about their capabilities, and Tier 2s and SMEs to understand how Tier 1s operate.

included the current project-by-project approach to procurement and construction rather than by portfolio or ‘bundling’ projects.

The current system meant “globally active Tier 1 companies are currently better able to manage the peaks and troughs of this system than more locallybased SMEs.” SMEs said they were also disadvantaged in meeting Tier 1 expectations because engagement only happened after developers were awarded Contracts for Difference and final investment decisions had been taken.

More SMEs could win work if a more consistent supply chain workflow was achieved, moving away from the current ‘bid-award-construct’ model with peaks and troughs of activity, the report states.

Mr Lilly said: “We hope this report will encourage even more collaborative action from government, local bodies like Local Authorities and the New Anglia Local Economic Partnership, developers, Tier 1 and Tier 2 and SMEs.”

CLEAR FRAMEWORK Key asks to the government in the report include a clear framework and plan for energy transition, encouragement and monitoring of local content, more support for UK companies working overseas, support for and clarity on rules for microbusinesses and SMEs and investment in skills.

Developers are asked to support and award framework agreements, earlier procurement engagement and decisions, develop standardised codes of practice and share skills needs and HSE requirements across markets.

FLOATING SOLAR PANELS COULD IRON OUT WIND PEAKS A project to add floating solar panels to a wind farm is scheduled to be incorporated into the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm site by 2025, writes Dag Pike According to TNO, the Dutch organisation for applied scientific research, the research and demonstration of offshore solar energy in the new offshore wind farm will be conducted together with CrossWind, which is a ShellEneco consortium that has recently won the tender to build the wind farm. According to TNO, the offshore solar demonstration project will have a minimum of 0.5 MWp (megawatt-peak) of installed capacity and will be added to the wind farm in 2025, which is two years after the offshore wind farm is scheduled to become operational. “The CrossWind project represents a major step towards the future of solar energy generation on the North Sea”, a TNO spokesperson said.

The 759MW Hollandse Kust Noord Wind Farm, which is located about 10 miles off the coast of the Netherlands, will comprise 69 Siemens Gamesa 11MW turbines. The solar panels are just part of a long-term strategy to add alternative generating systems to wind farms to help ensure a continuation of power supply when the wind is not blowing.

Along with the floating solar panels, Hollandse Kust Noord will incorporate four more technology solutions to ensure this continuous power supply. “These solutions, to be employed at the offshore site as demonstration projects, could be implemented at full-scale in the future,” a CrossWind spokesperson said.

These will include plans to equip the project with a shortterm battery storage system and green hydrogen production infrastructure as an additional storage solution. The wind turbines will also be optimally tuned to minimise the negative ‘wake’ effects that wind turbines can have on each other. By adding these systems Shell and Eneco aim to use the combination of these individual measures to provide an uninterrupted power supply regardless of the wind situation.

Development of the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm has taken another step forward with the awarding of an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) contract.

UXOcontrol, a joint venture between N-Sea and Den Ouden Group subsidiary Bodac B.V., has been appointed by Vattenfall as specialist contractor to complete the UXO identification campaign for its wind farm, located off the coast of The Netherlands.

N-Sea CEO, Arno van Poppel, commented: “The renewable energy sector is one of UXOcontrol’s key markets and we are proud to showcase our capabilities and expertise by working on a project as significant as the

Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm and by doing these works, to make a clear contribution to a better, safer and cleaner world.”

Following geophysical UXO survey work, the identification campaign is scheduled to

commence this month, with the mobilisation of UXO identification vessel, Geoholm, which UXOControl has chartered from DOF management AS. The vessel will conduct UXO identification works for an estimated 14-week period.

The works for Hollandse Kust Zuid, which consists of four different sites, will be executed in two campaigns. In 2020 UXO identification will be performed in site 1 and 2 and in 2021 site 3 and 4.

When construction is completed, the wind farm zone will cover an area of 225km2.

The hydrogen and oxygen used in this process are manufactured using Renewable Energy (from PV solar, geothermal or wind turbines) to power electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gas, and to compress the

In the six months since the partnership between Reich and MIT (Marine & Industrial Transmissions Limited) was formally announced, the commercial and business landscape has changed significantly.

EVEN MORE POWERFUL ELECTRIC OUTBOARDS As reported in MJ earlier this year, Norwegian company Evoy introduced a 150hp electric outboard motor which was hailed as the most powerful electric outboard in the world New, more powerful versions to be added to the Evoy range will comprise 300hp and 450hp units with the 300hp unit being available to pre-order in 2022 and the larger motor in 2024. These more powerful outboards will widen the market considerably and can find application for boats up to 17 metres in length or more. With electric propulsion gaining ground as an ecological means of boat propulsion the availability of these powerful outboard motors could open up new markets and the first applications are likely to be in the workboat sector.

Evoy has focussed on electric propulsion for boats and in addition to these outboard motors under development the company also offers electric motors for installation as inboards.

These can be connected to most existing types of propulsion system such as stern drives, water jets and conventional shaft and propeller systems. Currently available is their 400hp motor with 150hp and 230hp versions becoming available next year.

The initial installations have been mainly used on commercial boats, tenders for Hurtigruten cruise ships and workboats for fish farms but there is scope for wide range of applications for larger electric outboards. Harbour craft where there is quick access to charging points are a logical next step.

The battery installation is modular and can be configured to meet the range and speed requirements of the user.

8 Evoy will soon have a full range from 150 to 450hp

A Preliminary Development Agreement (PDA) has been signed to prepare a turbo diesel engine for the marine industry.

OXE Marine AB has struck a PDA with the BMW Group to carry out a preliminary study of its 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine for marine application - to power the company’s next generation of OXE200 series.

After OXE Marine’s successful collaboration with the BMW Group to marinise the 3 litre, 6 cylinder bi-turbo engine for use in the OXE300s, both parties have also agreed to co-brand the OXE300.

“I am really pleased of our collaboration with the BMW Group with respect to the OXE300 Bison project,” said Myron Mahendra, CEO of OXE Marine.

POWER & PROPULSION Two 35m CTVs that will serve Ørsted’s Hornsea Two offshore wind farm off the UK’s Yorkshire coast, are set to be among the first hybrid CTVs in the world.

In the past, one of the limiting factors for development of hybrid systems for crew transfer vessels has been the limited propulsor space allowed by their usual catamaran hullforms.

Danfoss Editron has been selected by Danish shipbuilder and operator MHO-Co to deliver the drivetrain systems that will power the UK’s first two hybrid crew transfer vessels.

Both of the CTVs will be equipped with a Danfoss Editron serial hybrid system consisting of four propulsion motors.

The systems will also include DC-DC converters for the vessels’ batteries. It is anticipated that both of the CTVs, which will be capable of operating in either fully-electric or hybrid mode, will save approximately 127 tonnes of CO2 compared with traditional diesel-powered vessels.

The 35m CTVs, designed by Australian naval architects Incat Crowther, will both be capable of carrying 24 passengers and will be fitted with a large lounge area and eight cabins. They will also have the possibility of featuring an innovative offshore access

The vessels are due to be delivered in the second quarter of 2021.

ZERO EMISSIONS FERRIES

Italian jet drive manufacturer Castoldi SRL has recently signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Spanish distributor Pasch y Cia S.A.U. Castoldi started to design and manufacture marine waterjet propulsion systems back in 1962.

Currently, Pasch has four offices (Bilbao, Madrid, Barcelona, and Lisbon), repair shops in Bilbao and spare parts warehouse in Bilbao, Madrid and Barcelona. Its technical staff, trained and backed by the represented companies, is qualified to support properly all the different branches of activity, flanked by a large and well trained service network, which covers most of Spanish and Portuguese coast.

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä will design and equip two new zero-emissions ferries. The ships are to be built for Norwegian operator Boreal Sjö at Holland Shipyards in the Netherlands.

The orders with Wärtsilä for the design and the equipment were placed in April 2020.

The Wärtsilä ship design is tailored to the operating and route profiles of the two double-ended shuttle ferries. Included in the design concept is the optimisation of energy consumption. The ferries will

serve the Launes - Kvellandstrand - Launes, and Abelnes - Andabeløy - Abelnes routes in Norway.

In addition to the design, for each ferry Wärtsilä will supply the thruster motors, batteries, onboard and shore-based battery charging equipment, the back-up generators, and various electrical systems.

One of the vessels is 30 metres long, capable of carrying 10 cars and approximately 100 passengers, while the other a 50 metre long vessel for 35 cars and 149 passengers, including crew.

SOLID STATE BATTERY EXTENDS RANGE

Jet power for 48 US Navy RIBs

Extending the capacity of batteries is seen as the key to increasing the range and so promoting the viability of electric boats writes Dag Pike.

It appears that researchers at Samsung have come up with a potential solution with a solid state battery. With the current batteries that are in use, which are mainly based on various types of lithium-ion, designers have to find a balance between the weight and size of the batteries and their capacity.

It is the weight and size that limits the performance of the boat and is the main factor that limits the range.

Most of the research on new types of battery is based around the requirements of the road vehicle sector which is potentially a huge market with the marine sector feeding off the back of road developments.

There are three basic parts of a battery, the positive cathode and the negative anode both of which sit in the electrolyte. In a lithium-ion battery the electrolyte is a lithium salt in a solvent and the electrodes are made out of various solid substances with carbon and metal tending to be favoured. With a solid state battery the electrolyte is a solid and because these are denser than liquids, it means the battery can have a higher energy density, in other words it can store more energy for the same volume, which tends to be the Holy Grail of battery development.

New Zealand-headquartered jet drive manufacturer HamiltonJet will collaborate with rigid inflatable boat manufacturer Ribcraft to supply 48 Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) to the US Navy.

Ribcraft USA, LLC of Marblehead, Massachusetts, was recently awarded a 5-year contract to deliver the RIBs custom-fitted for use in Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD).

The 11-metre vessels will be equipped with twin HJ292 waterjets, blue Arrow control systems, and JETanchor technology from HamiltonJet. The contract also requires extensive spare parts and training to be delivered

by HamiltonJet.

Researchers at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology were looking into using a silver carbon composite layer as the anode. The team found that by incorporating a very thin layer into a prototype cell, the battery could support a larger capacity combined with a longer cycle life and improved safety. This enabled them to make their prototype approximately 50% smaller by volume than current batteries.

The Samsung team is still faced with the challenge of translating this research into a workable model that can be manufactured economically. The quest for the ideal solid state battery means research teams all over the world are trying to figure out what the solid electrolyte should be and how it is used in combination with different anodes and cathodes. The solid battery breakthrough is still some way off but the potential for this technology is becoming clearer.

MOVING A VESSEL CRANE INSIDE A SHORT TIME WINDOW A client of a UK marine engineering firm had an urgent request to fit out a 120-tonne diving tender, ‘Shoreline Engineer’, with new deck cradles and winches She needed to handle and tow the customer’s new equipment for development trials in and out of the water, all from the port quarter. The problem was her crane was positioned amidships to starboard; so C Data Marine needed to advise whether to install a second crane, or move the ship’s existing crane aft.

A meeting was held to discuss the requirements of project and identify the likely problems. The key need was to make these structural changes to the vessel in a safe and compliant manner, in order that that the MCA’s Cat.2 coding was still met. It was clear from the outset that the proposed changes would have noticeable effects on both the structural integrity and the stability of Shoreline Engineer.

With the very short time frame to the start date of the trials, the only realistic option was to move the existing crane.

Purchasing and fitting a second crane would have taken longer, even if one was available. However, the problem of the strength of the deck and underlying structure still needed to be addressed.

C Data Marine’s team of experts, Clive Robinson, Bob Barnes and John Hall, attended on board and carried out a structural survey of the stern, concluding that the quickest and safest method would be to replace the port engine removal access plate with a heavy 20mm plate serving as the crane base plate. This new plate was bolted down to twin, longitudinal deep beams, supported by cut frames and watertight bulkheads. Both the deep beams in way of the access plate, and the underside of the replacement mounting plate were to be reinforced with webs; and the new plate secured with UTS bolts. Structural calculations showed this approach to provide more than adequate strength for the weight of the towed equipment.

Quest quickly set to and fabricated the new base and strengthening, moved the crane and ran temporary hydraulic pipes, in time to carry out a new load test, and re-inclining experiment. C Data Marine re-calculated the six crane loading conditions produced as a supplement to the stability

book from six years before, which remained compliant with the MCA stability criteria.

Subsequently, Quest were able to move the crane back to the normal place, and replace the ship’s own winch, leaving the kit of parts readily available to repeat any similar task in future.

A double order of DuroWipers pantographs (windscreen wipers) have kitted out two newbuild vessels built by an Irish boatbuilder.

It’s not the first time that Arklow Marine Services has gone to DuroWipers to equip its vessels. The company’s director, Billy Tyrrell, says it has been using the wiper systems for six years.

“We have found DuroWipers to be exceptional, both in terms of price and quality, which is why we have come back to them again and again,” he said.

to equip the 19m newbuild crabber AmberLisa for the McNeil family in Glasgow.

Measuring 19 x 7 x 4.2 m depth with a steel hull and part aluminium shelter deck and

wheelhouse, this vessel was built to be robust. It is destined for North Sea fishing with 4,000 pots in trams of 200.

The second vessel, equipped with Class 50 DuroWipers, is an 18m fish farm vessel for Marine Harvest. Made from AISI 316 stainless steel, DuroWiper pantographs and pendulums have a patented twin drive rotary transfer box which gives smooth, powerful and reliable performance.

PALFINGER SUPPLIES OFFSHORE WIND VESSELS

ADDITIONAL ORDER Shortly after signing the crane contract, Palfinger secured the deal to also deliver lifesaving appliances to all four new Edda Wind vessels. While each SOV will be fitted with two liferaft davits, each CSOV will be provided with two totally enclosed lifeboats with accompanying davits in addition to two liferaft davits.

Palfinger Marine has been selected to equip four new offshore wind service vessels with lifting solutions as well as lifesaving appliances.

The Austrian crane and lifesaving equipment manufacturer will provide the equipment for Edda Wind, Østensjø Group’s offshore wind segment. The deal includes ten foldable knuckle boom cranes, four lifeboats and eight davits.

Designed to be eco-friendly and efficient, the two commissioning service operation vessels (CSOV) are being constructed at Gondán Shipbuilders. Each of them will be fitted with one of Palfinger’s PK15500M cranes and one PK33002M crane, the latest model of PALFINGER’s foldable knuckle boom cranes.

Two slightly smaller service operation vessels (SOV), awarded to Balenciaga Shipyard, will be equipped with two PK15500M cranes and one PK33002M crane each.

CHARTER AGREEMENTS The delivery of all Palfinger equipment is scheduled for 2021 and 2022. Edda Wind has signed long time charter agreements for two of the four vessels. One agreement involves MHI Vestas, allowing one of the SOVs to operate for the next 15 years as of the second quarter of 2022. The second ship, a CSOV, has been chartered by Ocean Breeze Energy for a period of eleven years, starting with the first quarter of 2021.

The leisure powerboat solution is now installed into the 25ft, 23t steel-hulled tug Iron Jac, a heavy commercial tugboat.

St. Johns Ship Building turned to Dometic Marine for their newbuild project and it was consequently decided that that a purpose-made Dometic Optimus EPS for inboards could be an ideal precise steering solution for the massive workboat.

CTD CABLE SUPPORTS POLAR RESEARCH VESSELS A cable production and distribution company has supplied two lengths of double-armoured CTD (Conductivity, Temperature and Depth) cable for polar research vessels.

Elmeridge Cables Limited (ECL) were asked by British Antarctic Survey (BAS) to supply the cable for two Royal Research Survey vessels. These separate contracts were for a single 8,000m length for the RRS James Clark Ross, one of the world’s most advanced polar research ships, and a single 10,000m length for the RRS Sir David Attenborough, the UK’s new polar research ship.

Both vessels work in very sensitive and often extreme weather environments, and therefore great care and attention had to be taken throughout each production stage.

“BAS stipulated that to avoid slippage on the winch during deployment and recovery, no grease or oil could be applied on or to the armour wires of Galvanised Improved Plow Steel (GIPS), an assurance we were happy to give,” said ECL. GERMAN BALTIC PORT ENTERS NEW FERRY ERA A new era is getting underway in the Baltic seaport of Kiel with the mid-year arrival of the first of a planned series of commuter ferry newbuilds, writes Tom Todd

Updating progress towards what Kiel’s city-owned tug and ferry operator SFK describes as “a new ferry ship generation”, spokeswoman Andrea Kobarg told Maritime Journal the 32m long and 8m wide, plug-in hybrid ferry Gaarden was “expected in Kiel at the end of June”. It was lift-launched at the start of May at Holland Shipyards and had originally been expected a little earlier.

A second ferry, SFK’s first all-electric workhorse the 24.7m x 6.5m Düsternbrook, has in the meanwtime also been built at Holland Shipyards. Its keel-laying was at the start of April and Andrea Kobarg says it is now expected at the end of December.

Gaarden is monohull with a bulbous bow carrying 250 passengers. SFK has said it will have two fixed propellers driven by electric motors. Power will come either from two generators or from a battery pack charged overnight using a conventional plug. When required, generators will be turned off and the ferry driven entirely by battery.

Düsternbrook is for 140 passengers and 60 cycles and will

be emission-free. MJ understands it will have an 819kW battery package from EST-Floattech and be driven by electric motors operating on two shafts and two rudders as well as a bow thruster. Batteries charged overnight will provide ten hour operation and solar panels on the ship’s roof will supply onboard power.

The ferry will also have hydraulic positive drive enabling power-free berthing with one-man control.

When Gaarden was ordered, SFK secured options under the same contract for three more hybrid ferries for delivery in 2022, 2024 and 2026. Some 40% of the nearly €4 million cost of each of those ships is coming out of the Berlin Government’s “Clean Air” promotion programme. In the meantime SFK is investing €3 million in the all-electric Düsternbrook - some €763,000 of it with “Clean Air” funding.

Asked about the timetable for further newbuilds and their technical status, Andrea Kobarg said it would be “November at the earliest” before the SFK would “evaluate and make a decision about further newbuilding options”.

Further defence inroad for Norco UK composites specialist and boatbuilder Norco has joined the Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register (JOSCAR).

JOSCAR is a collaborative tool used by the aerospace, defence, and security industry to act as a single repository for pre-qualification and compliance information.

The system was established following an initiative led by ADS Group and includes a

growing number of prime contractors as registered buyers such as The Ministry of Defence, BAE Systems, and Rolls Royce.

By holding common supplier details in a central system allows information to be accessed by all participating buying organisations, reducing duplication, time, resources and cost and giving wider market access.

ROSTOCK ORDERS FIRST ELECTRO-SOLAR CATAMARAN Rostock has ordered its first electro-solar passenger ferry but the signs are that it will not herald a general switch to electric commuter shipping just yet, writes Tom Todd

The 21m long and 6.6m wide catamaran ferry is being built at ship and steel construction specialist Ostseestaal in Stralsund, further east near the Polish border, on a design by sister company Ampereship.

It is the first of its kind for Rostock but the concern has built ten electro-solar boats for a variety of customers over the years. They include the Sankta Maria 11, billed as the world’s first fully-electric inland car-passenger ferry now serving on the Mosel.

The keel for Rostock’s newbuild, owned by the city but being operated by Reederei Antaris, is being laid in October.

It will enter service about mid 2021 between Gehlsdorf and Kabutzenhof in Rostock’s Stadthafen on the Warnow River, inland from Rostock port.

The ferry, being built on an aluminium hull, will be fully electric and emission-free, saving up to 36,000 litres of diesel and a billed 95 tons of CO2 a year, officials said. Its two 45kW, 360 degree rotatable rudder propellers will get their power from high-voltage 252kWh Lithium batteries, charged overnight, and from 36 solar panels of total 10.8kWp on the ship’s roof. Top speed is given as14 kms/h although only a service speed of 7.5kms/h is required for the half kilometre journey. It will carry 80 passengers and 15 bicycles.

City spokesman Ulrich Kunze told Maritime Journal further technical details would be available by September at the latest and once newbuild project planning had been completed.

Kunze added that no further electric ferries were currently planned by the city. Leading local passenger ferry operator Thomas Schütt, asked if the newbuild heralded an early

general switch to electric ship operation for his company, was quoted as saying: “Not today, nor tomorrow and not even in the next one to two years. We have too many other problems at the moment”.

However, Rostock’s Environment Senator Holger Matthäus was more optimistic. “What we are doing with this new ferry is first-rate. We are blazing a trail on the Baltic coast”, he said. Another official described the new ship order as “a quantum leap”.

UNIQUE GERMAN LNG FERRY READIES FOR OFF A new ferry billed as the first of its kind in Europe is starting trials in southern Germany this autumn prior to winter service, writes Tom Todd The 82.37m long and 13.4m wide passenger/car ferry, as yet unnamed but tagged FS14, is being fitted out and its new MTU engines installed in the ferry port of ConstanzStaad on Lake Constance.

It is joining the fleet of the Stadtwerke Konstanz - a public utility company operating six ferries on the lake, which borders Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The ships carry more than four million passengers and about 1.4 million vehicles a year.

Christopher Pape at Stadtwerke Constanz told Maritime Journal that if everything goes according to plan the first FS14 trials will take place this autumn prior to the new ship entering service during the coming winter. The newbuild is costing €18.7 million, more than €1 million of which is being funded by the German Government, and will carry some 700 passengers and around 60 vehicles between Konstanz and Meersburg.

It has been a long and unusually complex journey so far for the unique ferry. The fitting-out in Staad has followed a tow from Fussach at the Austrian end of the lake, where the ship was assembled after the road delivery of sections from Hamburg shipbuilder Pella Sietas.

FS14 will have the same external dimensions and look almost identical to the Stadtwerke Konstanz ferry Lodi except for an eight metre high ventilation mast. Lodi is propelled by 8-cylinder MTU Series 4000 diesels. In fact, all Stadtwerke ships have engines from MTU, which is based in Friedrichshafen on the lake and is part of Rolls Royce Power Systems.

MTU says the new ferry will be the first inland passenger

ship in Europe to get two high-speed MTU 8-cylinder Series 4000 single fuel LNG gas engines each of 746kW and driving Voith Schneider propellers.

The engines are based on the proven 4000 Series for workboats and MTU said that the Stadtwerke Konstanz will be the first customer to be supplied with the new engines under a co-operation agreement with Rolls Royce. That will cover two years of ship trials under continuous monitoring.

The Realisation and Demonstration of Advanced Material Solutions for Sustainable and Efficient Ships (RAMSSES) project has reached a key milestone.

On 18 July, at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding’s (DSNS) shipyard in the Netherlands, the project’s partners unveiled the recently assembled full scale composite ship’s hull section that has been in development for three years.

‘Custom Made Hull for Offshore Vessel’ represents one of thirteen demonstrators that make up the EU-funded RAMSSES project. The project can now progress with a series of tests to demonstrate the viability of large composite ships as a sustainable shipping solution.

Marcel Elenbaas, senior engineer at research & technology support DSNS, said: “The use of composites for larger ships has

significant consequences for the entire design of the ship. If it is lighter, a vessel uses less fuel and produces lower emissions. The vessel also requires smaller engines, which means more space for additional systems, making for a more versatile platform. And of course, composites require considerably less maintenance than a steel vessel.”

SCALING UP TECHNOLOGY Regulations covering composite shipbuilding only cover vessels up to 500t - approximately 25m in length. RAMSSES aims to address this by scaling up composite technology and capacity to design, produce and market composite vessels up to 85m long, in compliance with all regulations.

This section of the project is led by DSNS and Damen Shipyards Gorinchem (DSGo), which has developed the baseline design.

Engineering has been performed by Airborne UK and InfraCore Company. Evonik has developed the resin to infuse the composites. TNO will perform full scale tests for validation of design, quality management and structural performance.

AUTONOMOUS CARGO FERRIES FOR OSLO FJORD ASKO Maritime AS is a subsidiary of Norges Gruppen ASA, one of the largest players in the Norwegian retail segment and this vessel construction project is partially funded by the Norwegian Government as part of the overall plan for a significant reduction in emissions in Norwegian waters.

These 67 metre long ferries will have full electric propulsion and are designed solely for the transport of semi-trailers across Oslo Fjord.

The vessels will be managed by Massterly AS, which is the first company in the world that has been set up to undertake the technical management and the operation of autonomous vessels. Massterly is a joint venture between Kongsberg which is a significant player in the world of autonomous vessels and the shipping company Wilhelmsen.

These autonomous vessels will be delivered as fullelectric transport ferries, with the main propulsion power coming from a 500kW electric motor coupled to an azimuthing stern drive. This with be supplied with electrical power from an 1846kWh capacity battery bank. An electrically powered Schottel Pump Jet will be fitted at the bow to act both as emergency propulsion and as a bow thruster to improve manoeuvrability. The operating speed will be 10 knots and it is anticipated that this mode of trailer transport will save over 2 million road miles per year.

been full established the ferries will operate as fully autonomous ferries for ASKO with the ability to transport 16 fully loaded standard EU trailers at one time. These will be stowed on the open deck with a loading ramp at the stern.

The vessels have been designed by Naval Dynamics in Norway with Kongsberg Maritime supplying the automation systems and with detailed engineering being carried out by CSL. They will be built under DNV GL Classification and flagged in Norway. Construction of the vessels will be carried out at Cochin Shipyard in India and the contract has options for a further two vessels.

Cold climate-ready pilot boat launched Ireland’s Safehaven Marine has launched a new Interceptor 48 pilot boat Pilot 1 for the Gdynia Pilots in Poland.

This is Safehaven’s 44th Pilot vessel delivered to ports worldwide. Safehaven’s Pilot 48 has proved to be a superb sea boat performing admirably in pilotage operations with all owners extolling its virtues of seakeeping, strength and stability. Pilot 1 is powered by a pair of Volvo D13 engines and has a 24.5kts operational speed. She has been specially fitted out for cold climate operations, as the Northern Baltic ports of Poland can experience quite extreme sub-zero temperatures in winter. As such, her hull has been strengthened at the waterline with Kevlar to allow her to operate in light icing conditions. She incorporates a diesel fired heating system which supplies hot water to her external railings to prevent icing, as well as to all internal compartments which are fully insulated and incorporate

heated windows and engine block heaters.

As at times part of her duties means her crew may have to remain aboard for extended periods she has full live aboard facilities in her forward cabin, as well as being fully climate controlled with 220v AC air conditioning.

She accommodates seven pilots and crew comfortably in her main cabin which features

a central helm position providing excellent visibility and control of the craft during boarding operations and incorporates Safehaven’s proven sacrificial boarding impact fender and MOB recovery system on her transom. She is due to be delivered to Gdynia later this month as soon as Covid-19 travel restrictions are lifted.

Safehaven currently has pilot boats in construction for La Coruna in Spain, Montevideo in Uruguay and Tangier, Morocco as well as a Search and Rescue Interceptor 48 SAR for the Faroe Islands Rescue Service.

SHIP & BOATBUILDING A Belfast Maritime Consortium led by Artemis Technologies has won a £33 million UK Government innovation grant to develop zero emissions ferries in the city.

The syndicate says that the development of these innovative ferries will revolutionise the future of maritime transport. With further investment from consortium partners, the total project investment will reach close to £60m over the next four years, creating an initial 125 research and development jobs, and leading to more than 1,000 in the region over the next 10 years.

The 13 partner syndicate - which is a mix of established and young companies, including Belfast Harbour and Bombardier, academia and local public bodies - is the only Northern Irish or maritime recipient of the UK Research and Innovation flagship Strength in Places Fund.

A spin-off from the America’s Cup sailing team, Artemis Racing, Artemis Technologies is led by double Olympic gold medallist Iain Percy OBE. Iain said: “When we launched Artemis Technologies, we decided to base ourselves in Belfast because of the incredible aerospace and composite engineering talent available.

“SENSITIVE” WESER QUAYSIDE BEING RENEWED Underway in Bremerhaven is the €17.7 million renewal of a run-down North Sea quayside, located at what officials describe as “a sensitive hub” for shipping access to the port, writes Tom Todd The work has been planned for several years but construction has only now been given the go-ahead. It is part of what the Bremen State Senator responsible for ports - Claudia Schilling - described as a systematic effort to boost Bremerhaven’s competitive ability. Other similar renovation projects are planned.

Bremerhaven, a major container and vehicle handling centre, is part of the Bremen Ports complex which also includes the Port of Bremen further inland. Together they make up Germany’s second biggest universal port after Hamburg, handling more than 69 million tons last year.

The 320m long Kaje 66 lies directly on the Weser Estuary and is located next to the entrance to Bremerhaven’s biggest lock, the Nordschleuse. Quay 66 secures ship access to that lock and to the port’s inner harbour vehicle and other handling areas served by it and so the lock and its approaches are strategically very important.

When Bremerhaven’s other main but smaller lock, the Kaiserschleuse, is unavailable, the Nordschleuse provides the only access to the Überseehsafen, where some 2.2 million vehicles are handled every year The 372m long lock, which has a passage width of 45m, is used by some 2,000 ships a year - among them giant vehicle carriers and is still one of the world’s biggest locks. When Bremerhaven’s other main but smaller lock, the Kaiserschleuse, is unavailable, the Nordschleuse provides the only access to the Überseehsafen, where some 2.2 million vehicles are handled every year.

A consortium grouping German construction firms Ed. Züblin and Tiefbau Unterweser (TAGU) has been commissioned to carry out the Kaje 66 project by port management concern bremenports. The work is expected to take 18 months.

A new sheet pile wall is being rammed in front of the quay and the old accident-damaged former ferry berth demolished.

A 4000sq.m surface area behind the quay wall is being dug out and replaced. Links are being created to adjacent northern quay sites and to the southern Columbuskaje, home of the city’s cruise ship terminal.

A €78.7 million, three-year project to rebuild the Columbuskaje has already been approved and is due to begin in 2021 after completion of the Kaje 66 renovation. Also already approved is the €43 million rebuilding of Bremerhaven’s historic North Mole.

Associated British Ports (ABP), the owner and operator of the Port of Lowestoft has invested more than £250,000 in the construction of a new fuel bunkering facility.

The bunkering facility received its first fuel from the vessel, Thun Grace, which called at the Port of Lowestoft on behalf of Peterson UK and GEOS Group as part of a strategic partnership to carry out fuel services. GEOS Group provides fuel directly from a UK refinery to various ports around the UK. John Shade, UK Fuel Manager, said: “This new fuel bunkering facility provides operators from the oil and gas and offshore

wind sectors with another reason to use Lowestoft as their port of choice, with capability and capacity now in place to

service any vessel that comes into the port.

We are pleased to have worked in partnership with ABP and GEOS Group to create a competitively priced solution in a very convenient location.”

Construction of the new facility, which included the raising of bund walls, began in November 2019 and was completed on schedule by the local contractor Brooks and Wood.Tangier, Morocco as well as a Search and Rescue Interceptor 48 SAR for the Faroe Islands Rescue Service.

CHANNEL DEEPENING TO BEGIN IMMINENTLY AT VUOSAARI Work is due to start almost immediately to deepen the channel and the harbour approaches at the Helsinki port of Vuosaari after the award of a major contract writes Dag Pike The port of Vuosaari located to the east of the city was established in 2008 and is the main cargo centre in Helsinki.

It serves as both a major ro-ro port as well as being the main container terminal. When it was established the depth in the approach channel to the harbour was set at 11 metres, a depth which served most of the container and ro-ro ships operating in Baltic waters at that time. Now with the increase in the size of ships, particularly container ships the port authorities have awarded a contract for the deepening of the approach channel to 13 metres mainly to enable the port to accommodate these larger container ships.

This deepening is a major undertaking and involves both dredging and rock blasting. The rock blasting will be focussed on two pinch points in the approach channel and involves the drilling and blasting of 0.8 million cubic metres of rock. For this work Boskalis will deploy a drilling barge and a grab dredger. For the softer material which is mainly clay and moraine material and which mainly lies in the harbour area Boskalis will deploy two large backhoe dredgers as well as various hopper barges. In total this second operation will involve the removal of 1 million cubic metres of material.

The rock blasting will be focussed on two pinch points in the approach channel and involves the drilling and blasting of 0.8m cubic metres of rock. For this work Boskalis will deploy a drilling barge and a grab dredger

A second contract awarded to Boskalis is for the transport of part of the dredged material to a site close to the city centre that is being reclaimed for development. This reclamation work will create 6 hectares of land which will be used for offices and housing for 7000 people in an area known as Hernesaari. The work on both of these contracts will take place over two open ice free seasons with completion scheduled for 2021.

The contracts awarded to Boskalis are priced at €32 million with close to a quarter of this cost being met from EU funding. This development at Vuosaari follows on from the development of the cruise and ferry terminal located close to the city centre which allows passenger and cargo operations to be largely separated.

Jetty refurb for new aircraft carriers The UK’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is investing £64m in a redevelopment of the Northern Ammunition Jetty in Glen Mallan to support the Royal Navy’s surface fleet.

The jetty is used to load and unload ammunition. The original jetty was last upgraded in 1970 and had reached the end of its natural life. It needed to be rebuilt so that the facility could continue to be used by the Royal Navy’s existing vessels and to make it suitable for the new aircraft carriers.

The infrastructure works are expected to provide the new jetty with a design life of up to 50 years.

ready for the construction of its replacement.

All waste from the jetty demolition has been transported on barges to recycling facilities on the Clyde to minimise disruption to the public and will be reused for construction.

The project team has also installed 97 jetty head piles into the sea bed to support a

reinforced concrete deck for the new jetty.

The works also include the installation of five mooring dolphins which will be connected to the jetty by a pedestrian access bridge, and two of these piles for the mooring dolphins have been installed. Two modular fender spacer units will be placed in front of the new fender panel and will move with the tide to prevent the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers’ overhanging flight decks from colliding with the jetty.

The project also includes the installation of two modern pedestal cranes, fire-fighting equipment, stores, back-up generators and pre-fabricated modular buildings for offices.

SUBSEA VIABILITY TOOL LAUNCHED The UK’s National Subsea Research Institute (NSRI) has developed a tool which it says provides a clear indication of the potential commercial viability of early stage technology in the subsea industry By measuring the viability of a technical concept through analysis of various factors including market conditions and funding requirements, the tool provides a systematic approach and helps identify exactly where pioneering companies should be focusing their efforts.

This in turn will help the UK subsea industry capitalise on its world leading expertise to foster and develop the blue economy.

Current annual global spend across the blue economy is around £20bn, with a forecast rise to £140bn by 2035. The UK is in a dominant position with a 40% share of almost £8bn.

NSRI is the focal point for subsea research and development in the UK. Tony Laing, director - research and market acceleration at NSRI, says: “As an enabling organisation, we are dedicated to understanding demand-led technology gaps and supporting supplier-led technology solutions. Remote ROV operation brings major opportunities Forum Energy Technologies has developed and demonstrated the ability to remotely operate Workclass and Observation Class (Perry and Sub-Atlantic) ROV systems between an offshore vessel and a remote location.

Forum says that this new capability brings major opportunities to adapt operational practices in response to the latest industry drives as cost savings and reductions in HSE risks can be realised through reducing offshore crew sizes.

The concept of remote piloting was proven by Forum in 2010 when the company successfully operated its TXLX Workclass ROV in its test pool at Kirkbymoorside, UK from a TXLX Console located in Florida, USA. Remote Control capabilities demonstrated were camera and light controls, manifold power on/off, depth and gyro power, pan

and tilt controls, manipulator controls, ROV thruster controls, auto heading controls. At that time, internet speeds were much slower than today resulting in high latency telemetry which the control system software was not equipped to counter.

However, continued development in software efficiencies which reduce the effect of network latency coupled with increased

availability and reliability of the global 4G network has now allowed Forum to offer remote operations on its full range of ROV systems. The onshore hardware replicates the offshore HMI hardware and GUI so controls will be immediately familiar to operators. The Onshore Control Module provides a local hub for power and data connections.

Existing offshore control station hardware can be upgraded to allow remote control and monitoring of power systems. The Offshore Control Module interfaces with the upgraded hardware providing control and monitoring via the existing ICE/subCAN network.

The system upgrade components are manufactured and delivered from Forum’s UK facility in Kirkbymoorside, Yorkshire.

UNDERWATER ATLANTIC AUV CIRCUMNAVIGATION Teledyne Marine has announced that its Slocum G2 Glider, manufactured by Teledyne Webb Research, has just completed an over 4-year journey that circumnavigated the Atlantic Ocean Silbo was named in honour of its 2011 maiden voyage from Iceland to the Canary Islands. Silbo Gomero is a whistling language of the Canary Islands, used to communicate across the deep ravines.

In 2016, Silbo was updated at the Teledyne factory with an extended energy bay and thruster in preparation to circle the Atlantic Ocean. Launched in the early spring of 2016 from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Silbo interacted with international science teams from several countries, collected scientific and critical engineering data along the way for a variety of programs, and returned to Cape Cod in late June of 2020.

Other than a scratched hull repair, the only maintenance that Silbo received during the three stops was an external cleaning and a fresh set of batteries.

For the first leg, from Cape Cod to Ireland, Silbo covered a distance of 6557km in 330 days. While in Ireland, Silbo participated in a Glider Training session hosted by the Marine Institute and P&O Maritime Services, Galway.

On the second leg, Silbo flew from Ireland to revisit the Canary Islands, covering 3695km in 178 days, and participated in “glider school” at the research facility Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPCG).

The third leg took 418 days (believed to be another autonomous glider record), where Silbo flew from the Canary Islands to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, again crossing the Atlantic Ocean and gliding 6256km. Supported by staff and students from University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), St. Thomas, Teledyne technicians recovered, re-batteried and re-deployed Silbo in less than 24 hours.

Silbo’s fourth and final journey from St. Thomas began on July 18, 2019 and concluded on June 29, 2020 south of Martha’s Vineyard completing the final 6236km trek in 348 days. During this transit Silbo spent three months flying a butterfly pattern south of Bermuda contributing data to Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS). Silbo then joined the Gulf Stream becoming the season’s first storm glider as Tropical Storm Arthur passed directly over the glider.

During the glider’s incredible journey, it collected hurricane data, corrected current models, and provided close to 5000

CTD casts that aided metalogical forecasting. With partners from Rutgers University and its student base, UVI, PLOCAN, UGCLP, the Marine Institute, and others, Silbo also participated in the Challenger glider mission. It has been a test bed for many new engineering hardware and software features for both existing and next generation Slocum gliders. Recent legs have provided data on new battery configurations, advanced software, and techniques for piloting long endurance missions and minimizing biofouling. Silbo’s accomplishments have been critical in the glider community’s understanding of techniques used to increase robot durations at sea.

Along the way, we continue to entrain international and educational outreach and better our global ocean predictive skills a testament to the foresight of Dr. Henry Stommel and Douglas Webb who were instrumental in bringing undersea gliders to life.”

Silbo covered 22,744km overall and spent roughly 1,273 days at sea.

NORMAN FINLAY MBE: 1936-2020 The UK-headquartered Workboat Association has reported the recent sad news of the passing of its Life President: Norman Finlay MBE Norman passed away on Wednesday 5th August 2020, at University Hospital Southampton, age 84.

Following a career at sea and then as Superintendent of a dredger fleet, Mr Finlay became involved with workboats early in his career, and went on to become one of the main driving forces behind the establishment and development of the UK Workboat sector of the Merchant Navy in the 1970s, playing his part in the rapid development of the industry and in the technical advancements made.

He continued to work in the industry ever since, running his own Surveying business he became President of the SCMS and through this network became the key player in the development of the original Workboat Code with the MCA (then the MSA) in the early 1990s and the revisions ever since.

This project became the forming of the Workboat Association in 1994, of which Mr Finlay took the role as Secretary until 2011, then Life President.

In 2013 Mr Finlay was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award (pictured) at the Seawork Awards, followed suitably by the award of an MBE by her Majesty the Queen in 2018 for his services to the sector.

Kerrie Forster, CEO at The Workboat Association said: My own connection with Norman came soon before the time he received his Lifetime Achievement Award at Seawork 2013, Norman was still actively surveying vessels all over the world at this point. He was tasked to visit a couple of vessels that my company owned in North Wales, the then Manager of our company was having serious problems getting authorisation for a visitor to access the site to see the vessels (even if it was on official duty). After arriving at the Port, Norman calmly said “Leave it to me, I’ve been in this business a long time”, he drove away. 10 minutes later he was spotted walking in full PPE and with a Harbour Master’s escort across the other side of the Port towards the vessels: “first job done” he said as he smiled back and waved, ready to board the vessels.

Thank you so much for talking to me, I cannot believe I actually met the man who invented the Multicat!!

Since playing a more active role in the Association, first as a Committee member, then as CEO, my relationship with Norman quickly grew into one of a mentor towards his under-grad.

Norman wasn’t a person to waste time, car journeys or time spent in his home-office were made up reliving important historical lessons connected to the Offshore Contracting Industry, facts about why certain processes have to happen in particular ways, providing me with personal contacts and backgrounds to expand my network and of course a lot of dreaming about the good ol’days. This education has been very important to me.

Norman moved from Belfast to the River Mersey in his youth, his family back home also in the maritime industry at the famous Harland and Wolff Shipyard. When I informed him at the start of this year that the Association had sponsored an

area of woodland [Storeton Woods, Bebington] close to the River Mersey, he paused, his tone lifted and he quickly started recalling lots of memories of spending his leisure time in and around the woods.

At Seawork last year myself and Norman hosted a “Workboat Industry FAQ” session with some Apprentices currently studying for a career on Workboats. He told them the story of how for many years he had managed the operation of a small workboat, permanently chained to a small pontoon, which he used in dredging projects to move the cutting heads around sites [as seen on a large painting in his office]. When the time came to take the workboat out of the water for survey, Norman explained “after 24 hours of blood, sweat and tears trying to remove the chains and associated connections, it became obvious this was going to be a one-way process!”. A member of Damen Shipyards said to him “With some trialling, we might be able to fit some drive-legs directly onto the pontoon if you think it could be worth the investment?”, “Well” Norman said “soon after it was launched it was fitted with a small shelter, mainly to protect the controls; right there we had the World’s first Multicat”.

One of the Apprentices said to me after the event “Thank you so much for talking to me, I cannot believe I actually met the man who invented the Multicat!!”

I am sure Norman would have been more modest!

To those that worked with him, Norman Finlay was a true Professional. To anybody who knew Norman, he was an honest Gentleman.

We offer our greatest sympathies to his Wife and Children; Alison, Fiona and Heather. All of whom have become a part of the Association and its members lives over the last 25 years.

Norman, as we watch you depart port for the last time, we lower our flags to half-mast in memory of a man that has supported so many of us to become who we are today. You’re leadership, encouragement and passion has been the driver that has set the foundations for our industry.

POWER AND CONTROL FOR KARACHI’S LATEST FOURSOME Turkish tugbuilder Uzmar has announced the signing of a contract with Karachi Port Trust, Pakistan for four newbuild RAstar 3200W Class Terminal / Escort Tugboats.

The contract for the four 32 metre RAstar 3200W Class Terminal / Escort Tugboats was signed over a video conference on August 18th.

The contract was signed between Admiral Mr Jamil Akhtar HI, Chairman of Karachi Port Trust and Mr A. Noyan Altuğ, Uzmar’s Chairman of the Board.

KNOW-HOW Mr Noyan Altuğ highlighted the importance of the relationship between Uzmar and Karachi Port Trust stating: “We are not only selling vessels but more importantly we are selling our know-how, our detail engineering and our expertise in building state-of-the-art vessels beyond usual industry standards.

Our after sales service also makes us different and better in the market. As Uzmar, we are very happy to meet with our friends in Karachi Port Trust and excited to be able to sign this contract during these challenging times of global pandemic.”

The new Uzmar-built Robert Allan-designed RAstar 3200W Class Terminal / Escort Tugs will be 32 metres in length, specially designed to meet the highest sea keeping capability, maximum stability for escort manoeuvres at speeds up to 10 knots with the new sponsoned RAstar hull form. Tugs will be able to operate with a bollard pull of 75 tonnes (ahead and astern) and will be able reach up to 13 knots free running speed.
