This month’s cover features the Patrol 16 WP SAR, the latest addition to the Baltic Workboats SAR vessels fleet. Patrol 16 WP SAR has been specifically designed to operate in rough conditions and she is based on a successful 16-metre wave-piercing hull design. She has a hydraulic platform on the aft deck, which is helpful in retrieving people from the sea. On both sides of the Patrol 16 WP SAR wheelhouse there are rescue davits with winches and rescue nets. The wheelhouse of the vessel is designed with a 360° view, and there is also a lookout position behind the wheelhouse with an engine and jet controls to guarantee that the captain has the best overview of the situation.

Fallen blades
Wind farm owner and operator Ørsted said all restrictions on sailing around its Anholt offshore wind farm had been lifted two days after a rotor with three blades fell into the sea. No one was injured when the rotor became detached from the nacelle and fell, and Ørsted said in a statement that investigations were ongoing with SiemensGamesa, the turbine manufacturer, into the cause of the malfunction. The 400MW wind farm was completed in 2013, when it was Denmark’s largest.
Cold ironing
The Danish port of Aarhus will be supplied with a Shore-Link portable power system for cruise liners, the CMS Cruiser, to deliver power to cruise vessels when at berth. Shore connection, or cold ironing, is becoming more widely adopted and in Californian ports is mandatory. In Europe, all ports will be required to have cold ironing provision by the end of 2025, according to the platform Science Direct. Estonia-based Shore-Link is working with Danish integrator PowerCon to install the system, which should be in operation in spring 2023.
Ocean stressors
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission has published a scientific summary for policy makers to use as a reference to the ‘stressors’ it says are happening in the sea. The paper aims to coordinate action to understand the cumulative effect on oceans of occurrences like pollution, sedimentation and acidification, and how effects can be tackled. The Scientific Summary on Multiple Ocean Stressors is part of the UN’s 2021-2030 ‘Ocean Decade’ initiative.

CARS DAMAGED ON RORO FERRY MAIDEN VOYAGE Cars were damaged on the maiden voyage of a RoRo passenger ferry between the Norwegian port of Kristiansand and Dutch port of Eemshaven, Dutch media reported. The NL Times said the MS Romantika was ‘significantly late’ arriving in Norway, where the low quay meant cars and
campers could not drive onto the ship without damaging their undersides. “Passengers had to drive their vehicles onboard in a zigzag pattern, and wooden planks were used, but in the end these caused more damage,” the news platform said, quoting radio station RTV Noord.
In response to the damage, Bart Cunnen, CEO of Holland Norway Lines, was quoted by NL Times as saying the problem was due to miscommunication about the quay’s height, but that damages would be reimbursed. He also announced that Broekmann Loistics had been appointed freight agent for HNL.

SCHOTTEL STRENGTHENS GRIP ON PROPULSION Propulsion firm Schottel has bought a majority stake in system integration specialist firm Elkon, a Turkish specialist in marine electrical system integration, the firms announced at the NorShipping trade fair in Norway. The deal has been done in a move for Schottel to become a bigger player from a strategic point of view, said CEO Stefan Kaul. “With Elkon a renowned and very successful supplier of electrical power system engineering, design and integration for vessels, we will be able to achieve this,” he said. “We will expand our portfolio to include everything regarding the generation, distribution, storage and management of electrical energy on board vessels. Schottel will become a complete system supplier for electrical and green propulsion.” The firms say that energyefficient propulsion concepts, hybridisation and electrification can now be offered in a
complementary way, with an overlap in new build and conversion. The two firms have already been contracted independently on the same projects several times, said Elkon managing director Ertuğ Yaşar. ”They involved virtually every possible vessel type, from tugs and ferries to offshore vessels,” he said.

in Sweden
Danish underwater technology supplier MaArtney will expand with a new office opening in Sweden this month.T he new office will open in Mölnlycke, near Gothenburg. So far the Swedish market has been served by the company’s head office in Denmark, with Marine Survey acting as distributor in Sweden to create ’a sold base, branding the MacArtney portfoiio within underwater solutions such as underwater connectivity and data acquisition’, MacArtney said. But while the market has been served well, the extnsive marine and offshore activities along Sweden’s coastline have prompted a firmer foothold in the country to better supporet not only renewable and defence activiites but also ocean science intiatives, which will involve industrial, academic and scientific institutions. “The Swedish market has grown rapidly in the last couple of years, especially in terms of large-scale projects, resulting in a growing volume of orders for products such as our connectors, winches and underwater systems,” said Emil Andersson, who will lead sales efforts in Sweden, where he is from. ”The potential for spin-off business is enormous, which is why we are scaling up.”
BRIEFS Better vessel reports Fourteen organisations have called for a new standard in vessel reporting to improve data quality and improve efforts to decarbonise. ‘Today’, which includes ZeroNorth, aims to evolve noon reports into holistic vessel reports to support optimisation. “Data quality is a critical factor in underpinning voyage, vessel, bunker and emissions optimisations for vessels in the global fleet,” said Søren Meyer, CEO of ZeroNorth.

Kaj Takolander Port of Helsinki
An ambitious plan to develop the Port of Helsinki will be aided with the appointment of a new VP for Passenger Services. Port of Helsinki management have hired Kaj Takolander as vice-president of Passenger Services. He is also now a member of the port’s management team. Takolander has moved from Viking Line, where he was sales director, having risen through the ranks from head of Sales and Marketing with the company. Before Viking Line, Takolander was head of Passenger Services at Finnlines. “The Port of Helsinki is the busiest passenger harbour in Europe, and it is facing major developments that will be complex and challenging,” said Takolander. “In this position, I get to make an impact for the future. Nothing could be more exciting and inspiring.” Takolander will have his hands full in passenger services as the Port of Helsinki in January 2022 started a major development programme alongside the city itself, which involves changing operations at four harbours at the port. At the moment, pasenger traffic from Tallin and Stockholm is split between two of the port’s four West, South, Katajanooka and Vuosaari harbours. The project aims to centralise port operations so that all passenger and vehicle traffic from Tallin, in Estonia, will be dealt with at the West Harbour and all Stockholm traffic will go through the Katajanokka terminal. Vuosaari Harbour is to be developed for cargo traffic, the Port says. The size of the harbour area in the South Harbour will be reduced, allowing the city of Helsinki to develop the area, which will include a harbour tunnel connecting the Wet Harbour with Länsiväylä. Kaj Takolander’s position involves intense participation in the Port’s Development Programme 2030, which will lead to functions and traffic being rearranged in the city centre. He will begin his new position in May.

PROFILE
Richard Mills
Kongsberg Maritime Kongsberg is embracing subsea surveillance, with its newest model HUGIN Edge bringing the latest in technology to all sectors, from bathymetric survey to wind farm maintenance, habitat mapping to seabed characterisation and defence applications. Extensive hydrodynamic modelling together with Kongsberg Maritime’s carbon monocoque design and a refined low-drag hull shape are some of the reasons why the company’s latest brightly coloured autonomous underwater vehicle is being hailed as the most advanced AUV yet. “The traditional HUGIN that’s been around for about 14 years in its current form is a really modular vehicle so it’s configurable for a number of applications,” says Richard Mills, VP of Marine Robotics sales, presenting the HUGIN Edge at the recent Oceanology International exhibition at London’s Excel centre. “Rather like a pick-up truck. Then you have the HUGIN Superior, which has the best of everything you can throw at a single platform – four-day endurance, 6,000m depth. “The HUGIN Endurance has 15 days’
endurance, a 2,200km range – and the newest one, Edge, is the smallest of the family.” Edge is less than four metres long and weighs just 300kg, with batteries providing the power supply. It has been configured for ease of deployment from all platforms and offers new sonar design, providing 3D sensing capabilities for improved trajectory planning and directional collision avoidance, couple with traditional forward-scanning methodology. It is also equipped with open interfaces that can be integrated with third party planning and mission management tools. While operators may want to supervise as the machines go about their business, they are more and more opting for putting them in the water and ‘letting it do its thing’. Mills says, aided by its in-mission adaptive execution, which allows Edge to make decisions autonomously and replan how it executes its mission depending on information gathered by sensors from the surrounding environment. The general arrangement includes the next generation of Kongsberg’s synthetic aperture sonar, a high-frequency multibeam

echosounder and a swappable camera or sub-bottom profiler. This configuration has been designed to cover most geophysical survey requirements, as well as mine countermeasures, rapid environmental assessment and search & recovery, as well as the survey of critical national infrastructure. HUGIN Edge is designed to operate from Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs), small surface vessels and from shore. ”HUGINt has evolved into the most successful commercial off-the-shelf autonomous underwater vehicle ever made,” says Mills.

ROCK ARRIVES FROM NORWAY FOR SOUTHSEA FLOOD DEFENCE Super dense rock from Norway is being shipped to Southsea for major flood defence work Thousands of tonnes of rock have begun to arrive on the beach at Southsea as part of major flood defence works that will stretch 4.5km along the south coast of England. The £130 million (€156 million) work, funded by central government, is being done in a joint venture between Boskalis Westminster and engineering contractor Volkerstevin (VSBW). A total of 140,000 tonnes of rock will be shipped to the coast from Norway over the two years that the work is expected to take. “The rock used in the flood defence has to meet specifications ensuring it will last for at least 100 years; the granite we use has to be very dense and very durable, plus procuring it has to be economically viable,” said customer engagement officer Jeannette Moyse.
The rock used in the flood defence has to meet specifications ensuring it will last for at least 100 years; the granite we use has to be very dense and very durable, plus procuring it has to be economically viable
‘‘
“The granite we are using from Norway best meets all our requirements, and although there may be granite rock closer it may not meet the specifications for performance that the flood defences need.” The rock is delivered by coaster to the shore and stockpiled for access during the work, which is of course tidal dependent. A working platform is built out to sea, and long-arm excavators place geotextile material as a base for the rocks to be placed on to maintain stability.
Smaller rocks are then moved into position as a core, with larger rocks, each weighing about four tonnes, placed on top in a way that they interlock and cannot move. The work is currently being carried out along a stretch of coast where in February 2014 a storm damaged sea walls. In 2016 there was significant flooding during the so-called ‘Storm Angus’. These areas will be protected by a 600m stretch of ‘rock armour’ that will go out to sea for about 35 metres, Moyse said. “The impact of global warming and climate increases the flood risk at Portsmouth, which is low lying, and as a result, rising sea levels are a cause for concern,” said Moyse. “Also climate change does result in more frequent and stronger storm events, further increasing the chance of flood events.” Boskalis has also been contracted to carry out protection and replenishment works along 40km of coast from Togo to Benin in West Africa. Fifteen groynes will be installed and six existing ones refurbished, and 1 million m3 of sand will be deposited along the coastline.

UK MISSING OUT ON ‘MASSIVE OPPORTUNITY’ By ignoring the potential of tidal energy, the UK is missing an open goal, say stakeholders in the sector The UK government is missing out on a ‘massive opportunity’ to solve an energy crisis that is seeing electric and gas bills more than doubling across the country, say stakeholders in the tidal energy sector. The British Hydropower Association says the government has ‘all but ignored’ the potential of tidal range and run-ofriver technology in its British Energy Security Strategy, which was published on April 6. In it, investment for nuclear, wind, solar, oil and gas is announced – but tidal energy does not get a single mention. In an article first published for the Maritime Foundation and recently updated for Maritime Journal (read the full article here), Rear Admiral Rob Stevens lays out the case for tidal energy’s capacity to address energy shortages in a green, reliable and cheap way. Stevens is the chairman of Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC), a 30MW commercial tidal stream project just off the south coast of the Isle of Wight. The project, which has received all the necessary planning consents, should begin operating in 2025, generating enough electricity to power thousands of homes, he says. “The tidal streams around our coast have the potential to provide a continuous source of green energy to the UK,” he says. “The realisation of that power source would also fulfil an immediate strategic need to boost our indigenous supply of electricity as we shift away from fossil fuels in the run into Net Zero by 2050. “British tidal turbine companies such as Simec-Atlantis, Orbital Marine Power, Nova Innovation, QED Naval, HydroWing, Sustainable Marine Energy and others have between them invested over £500 million (€650 million) in developing operational tidal turbines. This investment, along with government innovation grants, sees them poised to start full commercial production with their now-proven tidal turbines, the most capable in the world.” Stevens says the engineering potential is vast, with the necessary manufacture and installation of turbines, underwater structures, moorings and power cables breathing new life into post-industrial ports. According to an OREC (Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult) study, UK tidal stream industry could generate a cumulative benefit to the UK by 2030 of £1.4bn and support a total of almost 4,000 jobs.
reductions they have eked out of their small-scale developmental deployments have added a granularity to the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC) study of 2018, which predicted that at-scale turbine deployments would make tidal cost competitive by 2030. The next step could place Britain at the forefront of the tidal industry, presenting an industrial opportunity similar to that of the offshore oil industry in the 1970s and wind in 2000s. “The government’s policy trumpets its determination to achieve its energy objectives by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and imported energy – and yet totally disregards the UK’s most reliable and predictable energy sources,” says the UK Hydropower Association. “Within three to seven years the seven tidal schemes currently being planned would deliver more than 10GW of generation capacity predictably and reliably – and some 10 years before any of the planned nuclear plants will be in operation. “Wind and solar energy can do much of the heavy lifting to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, but the supply of energy from these sources is intermittent. What the country needs is a baseload to fill any generation gaps and it needs it soon.”
8 PTEC tidal flows - static
8 The AR500 Tidal Turbine sitting on the deck awaiting installation 2
The Danish example A good example of how such a policy could deliver for the UK is the Danish government investment in wind energy; the £690 million (€830 million) they invested in wind energy between 1980 and 2000 had by 2014 generated a turnover of £10.6 billion (€12.7 billion) with exports of £6.4 billion, and the creation of 29,000 jobs. By 2016 Denmark’s wind energy exports were higher in value than the UK’s defence industry exports. The British companies are similarly well positioned to capture a significant proportion of the global market share for tidal energy (estimated to be £76b by 2050). The cost

Other additions It’s not just the fuel that adds to the environmental cleanliness of the vessels, the company said. “An energy-efficient air conditioning system ensures minimal energy consumption and the heat recovery system of the engine head saves additional energy,” TT-Line says. “The optimised hull, including a specially designed bow, and special shaft seals with extensive waste management conserves resources and only environmentally friendly cooling water additives and cleaning agents are used. “Plastic products are avoided as far as possible. In general the central aspect in the selection of suppliers is the environmental friendliness of the solutions.

DUAL-FUEL POWERED TANKERS DELIVERED TO TERNTANK Swedish tanker operator Terntank has accepted delivery of two hybrid fuel tankers at Gothenburg Port within two weeks of each other Tern Island and Tern Fors were designed by Terntank and Kongsberg Maritime and built at China Merchants Jinling Shipyward. The first was accepted at the port on February 11, the second on February 25. Both are fuelled by LNG or LBG (liquid biogas), and are able to operate at port using a DC Link system to connect to power at Gothenburg Port – which is believed to be the first port in the world that can connect tankers to electricity. The mechanism means the tankers can reduce their auxiliary energy consumption during port operations by 99%, Terntank says, and the battery packs provide an energy reserve for power generation, limiting unnecessary parallel running of generators and provides a blackout prevention function that keeps the electrical network alive.
Both are fuelled by LNG or LBG (liquid biogas), and are able to operate at port using a DC Link system to connect to power at Gothenburg Port – which is believed to be the first port in the world that can connect tankers to electricity The vessels are being hailed as green because they emit no greenhouse gases or carbon particulates during port operations. The main engine, boiler and auxiliary engine can reduce their environmental impact and perform safe operations running on biofuels. “By combining the optimised hull and rudder design with
dual fuel capability, when utilising 30% biogas, in comparison to a same sized conventional vessel, Tern Fors reduces emissions by 70% of CO2 and almost eliminates the emissions of sulphur oxide (99%), of particle emissions (99%) and nitrogen oxide (99%),” says the company. Tern Fors has also been installed with a digital system by Kongsberg that optimises the vessel’s voyage by constantly adjusting its speed so that its arrival time can be controlled to the point that it can send a virtual NOR and move directly into port without having to drop anchor and wait to berth. “This digital solution offers enhancement to the ‘Just-inTime’ management, which is continuously being developed, providing vessel-to-cloud data infrastructure capturing and aggregating quality data in respect to the vessel’s overall operation,” Terntank says. “The data gathered ranges from engine and piston performance, hull build-up, to even contact with ice. This data is then utilised to allow efficient and proactive maintenance, evidently leading to reduced emissions.” Each vessel has a cargo capacity of 16,500 m3 and will be commercially operated by the Finnish North European Oil Trade in the Baltic Sea area.

’their performance exceeded expectations, thanks to their Turbodrive 400 HC waterjets’. The waterjets come with a good reputation, having equipped the 80 interceptor boats of the Indian Navy in 2013 and having been in operation ever since.
The company says it is one of the most efficient, lightweight propulsion systems available today, with a light integrated gearbox contained in the waterjet housing. Castoldi’s unclogging system can also be installed alongside, together with the ACES electronic control system. The ferries will be used to act like a system of public buses to take locals from island to island in a transport network much needed by the islanders. Gulf Craft has operated in the Maldives for 20 years, providing almost 80% of the archipelago’s water transport services, including coast guard, emergency services and leisure boats as well as public transport.

Sembcorp Marine has built the first of three new battery-operated RoPax ferries for Norwegian ferry operator Norled. All three are based on a design from LMG Marine, a Sembmarine subsidiary, and have been optimised to Norled’s specific requirements for energy efficiency. “To serve efficiently as a ferry vessel, the design took into consideration the vessel’s operational profile and schedule, as well as design imperatives of passenger safety and comfort, and conducive working conditions for ferry staff,” said Tan Heng Jack, Sembmarine’s head of specialised shipbuilding. The 82.4m ferries feature quick connection shore charging plugs, auto-mooring and efficient hull, propulsion and heat recovery systems. Normal operation will be courtesy of the zero-emission lithium-ion batteries for a service speed of 10 knots, but a switch to diesel back-up is possible if required. The batteries will be recharged using hydroelectric power. The multi-deck, double-ended ferries, each with a capacity for 300 passengers and crew as well as 80 cars or a combination of up to 10 cars and 10 trailer trucks, will service Norled’s shortsea Hella-Vangsnes-Dragsvik route in Norway.
“The demand for passenger ferries is anticipated to increase owing to a wide range of factors including the emerging trend of ferries as a viable alternative transport, development in marine fuel technologies, and inclination of consumers towards luxury marine

POWER & PROPULSION Norsepower will install two rotor sails on what is believed to be the world’s biggest short sea RoRo vessel, the MV Delphine, which transits between the UK, Ireland and Europe. Operated by CLdN, the vessel has a cargo capacity of close to 8,000 lane meters, and Norsepower estimates that the two 35m x 5m tilting rotor sails will achieve a fuel and emission saving of between 7-10%. It is the seventh vessel so far to be fitted with Norsepower’s rotor sails, and the third to include the tilting function. They work by detecting when the wind is strong enough to deliver fuel and emission savings, at which point they start automatically. The technology is around ten times more efficient than a conventional sail because more lift is produced with a much smaller sail area, the company says. Norsepower says its rotor sails can be retrofitted on existing ships as well as on new vessels. They are a modernised version of the Flettner rotor, a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind power to thrust a ship. The optimal number and size of sails are based on the size, speed, and operating profile of the target vessel, so Norsepower makes a range of sizes to accommodate.

“Seeing the interest grow in our tilting Rotor Sail design demonstrates how the industry is looking for proven, flexible solutions to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce fuel costs across a range of vessel sizes and operations,” said Norsepower CEO Tuomas Riski. “With fuel becoming increasingly expensive, making savings will also have a huge impact on commercial success. Working with CLdN and its ambitious team is an opportunity to demonstrate what our technology has to offer

to continue strengthening the environmental and commercial performance of its fleet.” In November 2021, Norsepower signed an MoU with Kongsberg Maritime to facilitate the addition of wind propulsion to the Norwegian group’s integrated power and propolsion systems. The MoU allows for ship owners and shipyards to choose between fully integrated systems or standalone products. “By teaming up with Norsepower, KM adds wind propulsion to its portfolio of strategies to facilitate greener operations, aided by its controllable pitch propeller solutions, which can easily manage the variable power delivered by Rotor Sail systems,” said Kongsberg.

POWER & PROPULSION A medium-range tanker is using new propulsion technology that could help ships achieve IMO 2050 targets. Swedish designer FKAB’s propulsion technology, which combines LNG with steam to produce hydrogen, could help ships achieve IMO 2050 carbon reduction targets. The hydrogen directly fuels the internal combustion engines and fuel cells, and all CO2 produced is captured by splitting the LNG molecules. Because the hydrogen is created onboard, it means the tanker does not require portside hydrogen infrastructure, instead using fuel cells that have specifically been developed to produce more power in propulsion and fewer emissions. A joint project between technology giant ABB and Greek hydrogen and energy firm Helbio, the system has been given approval in principle by classification organisation RINA. RINA says it is the first to receive approval for using viable technology that achieves the IMO 2050 decarbonisation targets. Because the design means hydrogen use can be progressively increased in a vessel, ships adopting the technology can qualify for a higher Carbon Intensity Index (CII) ranking set by the IMO.
NEW PROPULSION TECHNOLOGY MEETS IMO 2050 TARGETS
8 RINA Tanker
“To meet CO2 reduction targets, shipping is faced with the challenge of having solutions which either rely on fossil fuels, but which still require technology to mature, or on new, zero carbon fuels, the availability of which is still far from being guaranteed,” said RINA Greece Marine technical director Antonios Trakakis. “This new design enables the use of hydrogen as a fuel today without the need for bunkering and storage on board and
exceeds IMO 2050 targets for 70% reduction of carbon intensity.” All equipment can be fitted on deck, which means ship owners can convert existing vessels. From 2023, certain CII requirements will take effect for all cargo, RoPax and cruise vessels above 5,000 GT. These will include having in place an approved enhanced Ship Energy Management Plan that shows how CII targets will be achieved.

NEW POWER PACK CONVERTS WASTE HEAT TO ELECTRICITY Alfa Laval has unveiled a new power pack capable of converting waste heat directly into electrical power
Photo: Alfa Laval
The E-PowerPack reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, helping owners and operates meet marine industry decarbonisation targets. “Alfa Laval is pursuing a wide range of technologies to support decarbonisation, both independently and with partners,” said Lars Skytte Jørgensen, vice president technology development, energy systems, Alfa Laval Marine Division. “Fuel cells and many other innovations are in the pipeline, but the first critical step is to leverage the existing energy on board.” Launching on 5 April via webinar, the E-PowerPack is a self-contained solution that can generate electricity from many different heat sources on board. These include exhaust gas waste heat, which accounts for 50% of the energy from combusted fuel, but also liquid sources at lower temperatures, such as engine jacket water. Regardless of which fuels are used, fleets can use the E-PowerPack to reduce their fuel consumption, emissions and costs. On vessels where moving to low-sulphur fuel has created a surplus of steam, the E-PowerPack will transform the excess into a free source of power. The E-PowerPack will also be vital as energy recovery becomes key in transitioning to green methanol and ammonia. “Savings that offset fuel costs are only one part of the picture, since methanol and ammonia are both more expensive and less energy-rich,” said Danny Ingemann, head of sales. “For the amount of fuel they carry to be feasible, vessels will need to utilise all of the energy that methanol and ammonia contain. The E-PowerPack will be a vital part of achieving the energy balance.” 8 Alfa Laval’s E-PowerPack converts waste heat directly into electrical power
Heerema Marine Contractors have been awarded a contract for the transport and installation of the Dogger Bank C offshore substation off the northeast coast of England. The massive offshore wind farm will see the substation for phase 3 delivered by Heerema. Owners SSE Renewables, Equinor and Eni made the award as part of the third and final phase of the Dogger Bank project, which means total energy generating capacity will be 3.6GW combined with Dogger Bank A and B. This should be enough to supply 5% of the UK’s electricity demand, the owners say, powering six million homes.

Two industry partners are joining together to create a new simulator system for the UK’s floating offshore wind sector. Kongsberg Digital and the UK’s University of Plymouth are combining simulator technology and R&D expertise to provide offshore wind project teams and crew with facilities to verify, test and optimise floating offshore wind projects. “This simulator could be a game-changer in the future deployment of floating offshore wind technology. As the sector expands, we need to develop innovative and effective ways of installing the technology in new and challenging environments,” said Professor Deborah Greaves OBE, Professor of Ocean Engineering and director of the Supergen Offshore Renewable Energy. Hub Kongsberg’s K-Sim DP will be used to simulate, test and optimise flaoting offshore wind projects. ”I believe our partnership with Kongsberg and the opportunity to learn from their experience and expertise can make significant strides in helping us to achieve that.” Real-time simulation Vital to this project is a state-of-the-art Kongsberg Dynamic Positioning (DP) simulator, which will soon be installed at the university’s campus. The K-Sim DP simulator is built on the Kongsberg DP technology and will allow for thorough studies, mission planning, training and assessment of crew, where various challenging scenarios can be evaluated and optimised in a safe environment. K-Sim DP will be used to simulate, test and optimise marine operations throughout the lifecycle of FLOW installations. This will provide key insights into solutions that will increase efficiency in both installations and operational maintenance, increasing safety and cost-effectiveness for the companies involved.

UK sets new offshore wind targets Trade body RenewableUK has welcomed the government’s new energy strategy. A new target of 50GW offshore wind by 2030 will include up to 5GW of floating wind projects under the Energy Security Strategy published by the UK government in April 7. Trade association RenewableUK welcomed the strategy, which sets targets to reduce the UK’s dependence on gas. By 2030, 95% of UK power should come from low-carbon sources, the policy says, with fossil fuel generation to shrink from the current 40% to just 5%. The target will be achieved with more wind, solar and renewable hydrogen, says RenewableUK. To meet these looming deadlines, the government says it will reform the planning system to allow consents to be made within a year.
“The Prime Minister’s ambitious new strategy puts the rocket boosters under the UK’s transition to renewable energy and will cut consumer bills,” said RenewableUK’s Chief Executive Dan McGrail. “The new targets mean that our world-leading offshore wind industry will do the heavy lifting in getting Britain permanently off the hook of gas power by boosting our nation’s home-grown energy supply. Reforms to speed up the planning system and how quickly we connect new offshore wind are essential to meet these new ambitions. “Producing renewable hydrogen using electricity from wind will provide valuable flexibility to our future clean energy system, replacing gas in a wide variety of sectors like industry, transport and heating.”

SALVAGE ROUND-UP With the often extended nature of operations, news of salvage activities often takes time to filter through and five of the world’s major contractors have provided updates of their work
Boluda Boluda is known for its shiphandling towage services, which position it ideally for emergency response duties. Such was the case when the tanker DHT Mustang was drifting dangerously towards the north dock extension at Algeciras. Boluda’s tugs VB Ceballos, VB Juangonzalez, VB Titan and VB Tron responded and in 45kn winds, heavy rain and reduced visibility pushed the tanker back on course and escorted it safely to the shelter of the harbour. Salvage response generally involves protecting property and the environment but its role in saving life must not be overlooked. When a tourist catamaran broke in two and was wrecked a mile from the port of Cartagena, 33 passengers including children were immediately in peril. Boluda’s tug VB Glacial arrived within minutes, soon joined by VB Anibal, VB Asdrubal and VB Brio and other local vessels and with passengers clinging to wreckage with only the vessel’s port side above water, a tragedy was averted with all passengers saved. One of Boluda’s tug masters said it was the most distressing and difficult situations he had experienced in a 30-year career. Five Oceans Salvage Athens-based Five Oceans Salvage reports two major operation towards the end of 2021. A wreck removal contract was awarded when JSRY Floating Dock 1 sank in Jeddah. A team of 15 along with an array of salvage equipment successfully refloated the dock four months after the sinking, using a combination of pumping and pressurising. The dilemma of finding suitable tugs when needed with some urgency was faced by Five Oceans when, under a LOF contract, it was tasked to assist the 8,300teu container ship Archimidis, disabled 150nm off Acapulco. The nearest suitable tug GH Challenger was 2,500nm, or eleven days’ steaming, away and with Archimidis drifting to within 30 miles of land, Mexican authorities released the port tug Mextug Duero to slow the vessel’s drift until the arrival of GH Challenger.

Ardentia Marine’s salvage commitment includes exclusive supplier of emergency response services to Spain’s Salvamento Maritimo (SASEMAR) and the Cabanas A Coruña-based company reports five response and wreck removal operations in 2021. Its first 2021 contract involved refloating the grounded fast ferry Bentago Express in Gran Canaria using external airbags. Next, when the factory trawler Baffin Bay sank in Port of Vigo following a fire the vessel was refloated by Ardentia using submersible pumps and external buoyancy. In July two crawler cranes lifted the cargo vessel Nazmiye Ana, which capsized in Port of Castellón with the vessel lowered to a designated scrapping area in an eight week operation. Ardentia responded after another fast ferry, San Gwann, grounded on the islet of Es Malvins Pla off Ibiza. The ferry was refloated and towed to Ibiza within 40 hours of Ardentia’s arrival. Finally in 2021, two cranes were used to refloat the trawler L’Etel, which had sunk in the port of Ribeira two years earlier. Once on scene, the larger tug took over from Mextug Duero and towed the vessel to Cristobal, Panama.

Resolve Marine Last month, MJ reported on Resolve Marine assisting a container ship in difficulties in Strait of Juan de Fuca. On the other side of the world meanwhile it has been carrying out debris removal operations from the wrecked X-Press Pearl off Sri Lanka. A specialised DP vessel with large heave-compensated crane was mobilised from Singapore to the container ship, which sank following a fire in May 2021. Tsavliris Salvage Tsavliris Salvage is known for its rescue tow activities and two recently reported incidents could be viewed as routine but often not so. When the laden container ship Alion experienced engine breakdown in the Arabian Sea, 320 miles east of Socotra Island, Tsavliris dispatched the AHT Teja from Duqm, Oman to assist. The vessel’s compliment included four armed guards for passage through a high-risk piracy area. After adverse weather prevented an immediate towing connection Alion was towed to Sharjah where port tugs assisted in navigating the congested anchorage area before being safely berthed. Further east, Tsavliris dispatched the AHT Lanpan 26 when another container ship, Navios Nerine, suffered machinery problems off Singapore. With assistance from four port tugs, Lanpan 26 connected with the vessel, which was then towed to Batam, Indonesia for repairs.

GERMAN COAST GUARD TUG ENTERS FULL SERVICE The appetite for European coastal states to operate government-funded Emergency Towing Vessels remains strong with capable and readily available tugs able to intervene in incidents that risk life and environmental damage when commercially available towage and salvage assistance is not immediately to hand. In March 2021 Boluda Deutschland GmbH announced it had been awarded a contract to provide towage and rescue services in the Baltic by the German Federal Waterway and Shipping Administration, the contract formally commencing on 21 February 2022. Since then, the tug designated for the contract and the most powerful in Boluda’s fleet, the 48.8m long, 104tbp Bremen Fighter, has been in service based in the port of Sassnitz on the island of Rügen, where it performed maritime salvage operations under command of the German Federal Waterway Authorities on an interim contract basis. With all the administrative procedures completed and with its new colour scheme, Bremen Fighter is now in full operation sailing under the German flag. Bremen Fighter is one of several similar anchor-handling tugs of varying power configurations built by Mützelfeldtwerft GmbH, Cuxhaven between 2004 and 2009 and seen regularly in European waters. Built to a popular design, Bremen Fighter started out life as the Primus with Harms Bergung Transport with Unterweser Reederei GmbH later becoming involved as ship manager and operator until it became Bremen Fighter in 2011 under Boluda ownership. Two near sisters, Pegasus and Centaurus, still retain their original name with group ownership still listed as Harms

Sanmar surpasses 300 vessel completions Turkish shipyard Sanmar has a record number of vessels gaining certificates this January. January was a special month for Turkey’s Sanmar Shipyards, who had a record number of vessels gaining their class certificates, including six tugs and two pilot boats. The latest deliveries also take the total number of completions for Sanmar over the 300 mark, now standing at 302, a figure that will of course rise. Production will be boosted further this year when Sanmar’s newly acquired third yard becomes operational for construction of the new Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) ElectRA tug. Four of the six January arrivals are Sanmar’s Kocaçay class ASD tugs, which as standard carried yard-designated names while under construction, in this case Kocaçay IV, V, VI and VII for eventual Pakistani

owner PQA and to be renamed Gharo, Malir, Korangi and Pipri when delivered. While Sanmar-exclusive RAstar 3200SX escort/terminal tugs, the quartet have slightly different machinery arrangements, the first three each having two 2,350kW main engines while vessel number four is slightly more powerful with 2,525kW engines. Seven Kocaçay class examples are currently listed as under construction or delivered, the first and second in the series being Odin of Thor and Scapa of Thor, delivered to Orkney Islands Council in 2020. PQA also bought two Sanmar pilot boats PB Heer and PB Sassi as part of the deal. The final two of the six completions are Boğaçay class, RAL-designed compact RAmparts 2400SX tugs. Halcon III (built at Boğaçay XLVIII) delivers 70tbp and will operate in Chile for SAAM
Towage. The second, built under the name Boğaçay XLIX and now renamed Med Capella for MedTug, has a bollard pull of 60t from twin 1,765kW engines and current data shows it located in Antwerp. In separate news Sanmar has reported that SAFEEN Group, the marine arm of AD Ports Group, has acquired a RAmparts 2200 Sirapinar class ASD tug to be named Semaih. The contract was signed at the recent Seatrade Maritime Middle East event in Dubai. The 50tbp tug will be powered by Caterpillar 3512C Tier II main engines and join SAFEEN Group’s 20-strong tug fleet with delivery due in Q1 2022. SAFEEN Group’s fleet includes three other Sanmar-built tugs: Al Shaheed, Al Hili 1 and Al Jimi 1, RAL Rascal 1800 class 32tbp ASD tugs delivered between 2016 and 2018.

KOTUG MOVES COCOA BEANS EMISSIONS FREE
Credit: Kotug
Kotug has gained a notable contract moving cocoa beans on the Netherlands inland waterways using its zero-emission E-Pusher tug and barge combination. MJ has reported previously on Kotug’s “game-changing” range of E-Pusher modular and scalable electric pusher tugs featuring swappable battery containers. The range comes in three sizes: small, medium and large; and while the first application involved an E-Pusher type S transferring garbage, construction materials and retail products in the municipality of Leiden, this development involves first use of the E-Pusher type M along with four barges. The contract is with global food and agricultural commodity supplier Cargill and involves the transport of cocoa beans between Amsterdam, the world’s largest cocoa import port, and Cargill’s cocoa facility at Zaandam, on the North Sea Canal roughly halfway between Amsterdam and IJmuiden. Cargill will be the first company with this fully-electrified industrial arrangement for inland shipping, achieving what Kotug describes as “more resilient and sustainable supply chains” in support of the worldwide energy transition and modal shift from road transport to waterways. The E-Pusher
8 Kotug’s latest E-Pusher reference will transport cocoa beans in Amsterdam
type M can push barges with up to 4,000 tons of cargo. At the heart of the operation are the swappable battery containers supplied by Shift Clean Energy including battery swapping and charging stations provided by Shift. The containers use its ESS battery systems ranging from 70kWh to 6MWh, depending on the size of pusher tug. Battery systems may well be zero-emission from the point of use, but of course one has to
consider the source of electricity when charging and Shift’s PwrSwäp solutions are charged through clean power generation from biogas, hydrogen and other renewable sources either on the vessels themselves or at Shift’s dedicated energy stations. The swappable power system maximises uptime for vessel owners. Ard-Jan Kooren, Kotug International president and CEO, said: “We launched the E-Pusher concept in 2021, and the smaller type, the E-Pusher S (the CityBarge One) is already successfully deployed in several inland waterways and cities. ”I am very proud that an international company like Cargill is our first customer for the E-Pusher type M. The vessel is designed for transportations like these and guarantees zero-emission logistics and a significantly improved efficiency. As a result, we can support a broad range of industries to turn a part of their supply chain emission-free without extra costs.”

EXPLORING SCHOTTEL’S DIGITAL PRODUCTS The fitting out of the engine room, including propulsion systems for new tugs, used to involve mainly mechanical and electrical components throughout. The opportunities provided by digital technologies both afloat and via improved connectivity ashore are summed up by Alexander Neideck, Schottel’s product manager automation and digital products: “Basically, we are creating a virtual image of the propulsion system on land, providing insights into the system. This information can then be used to plan operational and strategic deployments better.” Functioning as a fault monitoring system, data are continuously stored, warnings and alarms generated if certain limits are exceeded. Analysis is largely carried out independently on board and viewed on an integrated control panel and can also be sent automatically to the IoT platform MariNet via encrypted connection, with cached data transferred automatically or manually later if there is no stable internet connection. ProData, another application and part of MariNet, allows data to be viewed online from anywhere, providing information on operational conditions and equipment status and the opportunity to plan strategic fleet deployment maximizing vessel potential. A condition monitoring service (ProCMS) uses an algorithm to monitor measured values and identify acute signs of wear or damage to specific components at an early stage, thus minimising risk of consequential damage. The final item to mention in Schottel’s digital toolbox is VibCheck. This mobile system allows the manufacturer’s service engineers to check the condition of the propulsion

When propulsion specialist Schottel provides news of references for tugs, digital elements are usually part of the order – time for a closer look at this transition into the future
system by carrying out vibration measurements on the installed units. The data is transferred manually ashore to be analysed by experts allowing more targeted maintenance planning and spare parts logistics, especially for older vessels. Tug owners are generally keen to extract long life spans from their investments, life-extension projects often making them unrecognisable from when new. Whether it is a new vessel or has been in operation for years, says Schottel, its digital services offer a wide range of benefits that can improve troubleshooting, strategic maintenance planning or optimise fleet management.

Early 2022 a busy period for Smit Salvage Smit Salvage has been called to assist in a nunber of salvage operations this year. Peter Barker picks out the main ones. Smit Salvage was contracted to assist with assets mobilised from Spain and the Netherlands to assist with the Felicity Ace fire that MJ reported on in March. A salvage team was airlifted to the ship and a towing connection established with Boskalis’ AHT Bear. Other assisting tugs were reported as: ALP Guard, Dian Kingdom and VB Hispania. The ship’s crew were picked up by another vessel and landed ashore by Portuguese navy helicopters. Two weeks later however, Felicity Ace gave up the struggle and sank. Smit was involved in another ship fire

when contracted to assist the passenger/ roro vessel Euroferry Olympia with 239 passengers and 51 crew on board. The vessel was engulfed by fire while on passage in the Ionian Sea with an intense SAR operation ensuing, where sadly it appears 11 people did not survive the incident. A team of 12 salvors from Smit were assigned to assist in the firefighting operations with further recovery activities continuing with the vessel alongside port of Astakos, Greece. The Dutch salvor is involved in a complex wreck removal operation in Mumbai, where the accommodation work barge Papaa 305 sank after breaking from moorings and alliding with a fixed structure. Smit plans to cut the wreck into around 10 sections to be
lifted by its sheerlegs Taklift 7 with a large hydraulic grab also mobilised to assist lifting pieces from the mud. Also in India, when the bulk carrier Aviator and tanker Atlantic Grace collided, they became locked together and following unsuccessful attempts to separate the two Smit, along with its local alliance partner VMW, were tasked to assist. Bunker fuel was removed from Aviator into two tank barges and after interlocking pieces of steel were cut, the pair were separated. They were towed to a nearby anchorage for dive inspection, the collision impact leaving a 9x9m hole in the side of Aviator, which after some minor epoxy repairs was towed to a nearby port of refuge.

8 Spanish sea rescue agency Salvamento Marítimo has celebrated the keel-laying of its new deep sea rescue tug at Zamakona Yards in Spain. It’s seldom that a 200tbp tug appears on the list of orders in these times and this as yet unnamed vessel comes at a cost of €52.5m and is due for delivery in October 2023, destined to become an important addition to the agency’s already extensive fleet of rescue tugs. An interesting feature of the newbuild will be its capability to operate drones in searches at sea, including a flight deck for drones up to 9m and a hanger with simultaneous capacity for two drones. 8 As part of what will be notable deliveries in 2022 Grandweld Shipyard has laid the keels for two of the four Robert Allan Ltd TRAktor 2700-Z tractor tugs to be operated by Kuwait Ports Authority. The keel-laying ceremony was attended by representatives of the owner, shipyard and classification society BV and the tugs, due to enter service in August will have multipurpose capabilities including firefighting and oil spill response and deliver in excess of 50tbp via Caterpillar main engines and Kongsberg Z-drives in tractor configuration with DMT

supplying a hydraulic single-drum towing winch. Typical high-quality accommodation will be provided for eight crew which along with galley and mess are above main deck level. 8 Together with Seychelles industrial and economic company UPCS, French tug builder Piriou Group is establishing a base in Mahé in the Seychelles. The expansion strengthens Piriou’s position in the Indian Ocean following creation of Piriou Réunion in 2018 and involve workshops in Ile du Port in Seychelles Port Authority’s Marine Engineering Centre initially offering its floating ship maintenances to civilian and military shipowners.

HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY
MoU SIGNED WITH UKHO TO MAP WORLD’S ENTIRE SEABED The UK Hydrographic Office has joined an ambitious project to map the ocean floor by 2030 An MoU has been signed that will help to bring about the complete mapping of the world’s ocean floor. The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) signed the agreement with GEBCO, the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans, which has an ongoing project with the Nippon Foundation to completely map the world’s oceans by 2030. The project, Seabed 2030, also intends to compile all bathymetric data into the free GEBCO ocean map. GEBCO is a joint programme underneath the International Hydrographic Orgnaisation and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, and the only organisation with a mandate to map the entire ocean floor. Seabed 2030 has been called a flagship programme of the ‘Ocean Decade’, a UN-backed initiative launched in January 2021 to increase scientific awareness and knowledge of the oceans – which cover 71% of the planet. The mission of the ’UN Ocean Decade: An Ocean Knowledge Revolution in Action’ is to ’catalyse transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, connecting people and our ocean’ while generating the knwledge needed to support a ’well-functioning, productive, resilient, sustainable and inspiring ocean’. Last week, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the UK’s Hydrographic Office and the Nippon Foundation, under which the UKHO promised to provide bathymetric gridded map products and share methods and best practices in technological innovation, infrastructure and solutions for mapping and data management. ”Today marks an important date as we initiate the release of identified data contributions to the project,” said Peter Sparkes, chief executive of the UKHO. “We share the Seabed 2030 vision and blieve that the full mapping of the world’s
ocens is a key milestone in supporting safe, secure and thriving oceans. “Knowing the depth of the seabed is a fundamental parameter for understanding ocean circulation, tides, wave action, sediment transport, environmental change, underwater geo-hazards, cable and pipeline routing, and much more.” “With eight years left until the end of the decade and 80% of the sea floor still to be mapped, UKHO’s data contribution and expertise on ocean mapping solutions will no doubt play a significant role in supporting Seabed 2030 realise its goal for the benefit of humanity,” said pSeabed 2020 roject director Jamie McMichael-Phillips.

UKHO provides S-100 data to Mayflower AS ProMare’s Mayflower Autonomous Ship is the first unmanned vessel to test UKHO S-100 data before it sets sail for Massachusetts. The UK Hydrographic Office has provided S-100 navigation data that is currently being tested on the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS), the first unmanned or autonomous marine vessel to use the data. S-100 will be the base standard for hydrographic data from which applications and uses can be defined; a framework intended to enhance the way data are created, shared and used. Under the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) project, testing is being carried out at sea to see if the ship can read, integrate and use S-100 data before it departs for the US coast. The voyage is two years behind its 2020

date, which would have marked the 400th anniversary of when the original Mayflower set sail from Plymouth with its band of pilgrims, because of ‘a minor mechanical issue’, according to ProMare, the marine research organisation behind the project. Three days into the voyage, the MAS had to return. In September 2021 it was relaunched, and
now preparations are under way to set it on course for Massachusetts, a journey which is estimated to take about three weeks. The 15m trimaran will use solar power to keep it going, with a diesel generator to back it up, and will be navigated with articifical intelligence using its six cameras and 50 sensors. The boat is made of aluminium composite. ”MAS provides a flexible and costeffective platform for deepening understanding of critical issues such as climate change, ocean plastic pollution and marine mammal conservation,” says ProMare. ”In parallel, the development of marine autonomous systems promises to transform ocean-related industries such as shipping, oil and gas, telecommunications, security and defence, fishing & aquaculture.”

SEA-KIT USV EMBARKS TO MAP TONGA VOLCANO An uncrewed surface vessel (USV) is about to leave for Tonga, where it will embark on a voyage to the caldera of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (HT-HH) undersea volcano that erupted on January 15. From the surface of the Pacific Ocean, the UK firm Sea-Kit International’s USV Maxlimer will collect data from inside the volcano mouth - the caldera - where it will remain for about a month. The data collection is part of a project by the Nippon Foundation and NIWA (New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) to look at the undersea impacts of the Tongan eruption. The HT-HH eruption was considered remarkable because of the height of its plume, whose umbrella clouds reached 31km, according to the ESSOAr, the Earth and Space Science Open Archive. The volcano erupted over a couple of weeks, with the final explosion on January 15 obliterating the island. Now NIWA scientists are sailing to Tonga to survey thousands of square kilometres of the seabed around the area, collecting video images of the impact, using NIWA’s research vessel Tangaroa and Maxlimer. The ’Tonga Eruption Seabed Mapping Project’, or TESMaP, is funded by the Nippon Foundation, which has been enabling oceanic projects since 1962. It is currently leading a Seabed 2030 project, which intends to map the world’s entire seabed by 2030. Project leader and NIWA Chief Scientist Oceans Mike Williams said he expected extensive changes to the underwater landscape in the area. “Before the eruption, much of the volcano was above water but now none of it is and the neighbouring islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai were reduced in size,” he said. ”We expect similarly dramatic changes to have occurred in the underwater topography.

The recent Tongan volcanic eruption will be investigated by UK uncrewed surface vessel Maxlimer
“Submarine cable breakages show impacts up to 50 kilometres from the volcano caldera, implying changes to the seabed over an area of at least 8,000 square kilometres. This survey will investigate the impacts of the eruption in the water column and on the seabed around HT–HH.” Acoustic data will be gathered using echosounders to determine the shape and structure of the underwater landscape, including the thickness of ash deposits and the formation of any new bedforms. This data will then be compared ared with previous maps to identify areas for sampling, so that further changes to the area, such as impacts to marine rine life and the seafloor’s chemical composition, can be assessed. ssessed.

HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY
EMPHASISING THE IMPORTANCE OF OCEAN DATA Thousands of attendees can now testify to the fact that ocean data technology is getting better - if not bigger London’s Excel Centre in March hosted the first Oceanology International event since lockdowns made live events impossible, and the overarching theme was the importance of ocean data – obtaining it, Interpreting it, and then acting on it. Take MacArtney’s NOUS underwater surveillance system, for example, which allows real-time viewing of priceless ‘underwater museums’ such as the Peristera, a Greek shipwreck in the Aegean Sea that the country’s Ministry of Culture is protecting by prohibiting diving or snorkelling above it. Dubbed the ‘Parthenon of shipwrecks’, the Peristera sank in the late 5th Century BC in the largest marine-protected area in Europe. Using underwater pluggable electrical SubConn connectors to combine signal and power, MacArtney’s NOUS works on a machine-learned algorithm to provide real-time video of the wreck site streamed via five underwater cameras. Fugro unveils first ROV to be launched from mother ROV Fugro was one of the show’s 447 exhibitors, and one of many to launch their very latest in technology – in Fugro’s case, the first remotely operated vessel to be housed and launched from a mother uncrewed surface vessel. Fugro gave live demonstrations of the 12m Blue Essence USV at the Royal Victoria dock, demonstrating how operators in Aberdeen, the Scottish city 860 miles away from London, could control the launch and recovery of Blue Volta, by Blueye Robotics, the first ROV in the world that can operate via Fugro’s global network of remote operations centres. Designed to withstand harsh conditions, the polypropylene frame protects it and its high-spec range of sensors for inspection and light that Fugro says would not normally be found in an ROV of this size – a mere 1500mm(l) x 650mm (h) x880mm (w). Blue Volta can be launched on a dedicated launch sled and umbilical management system to a maximum depth of 450m, or with simple modifications, as low as 1,000 msw. “We look at the advantages that uncrewed solutions offer, and particularly taking people out of the hazardous offshore environment is the principal benefit,” said Dan Jones, service line director for Fugro in its Aberdeen Inspection, Repair and Maintenance services. “We have an operational limit with the ROV in the water of 10 days – we’ve operated it for approximately six days so far with no fuel requirements – and that gives us access to approximately 100 miles offshore.” The vessel can conduct surface survey of the sea floor to inspect subsea cables, for example, using sonar with ranges of up to 100 metres. Kongsberg’s carbon monocoque design and a refined lowdrag hull shape are some of the reasons why the company’s latest brightly coloured autonomous underwater vehicle is being hailed as the most advanced AUV yet. The machine has been configured for ease of deployment from all platforms and offers new sonar design, providing 3D sensing capabilities for improved trajectory planning and directional collision avoidance, couple with traditional forward-scanning methodology. It is also equipped with open interfaces that can be integrated with third party planning and mission management tools, specifically designed to optimise results. ”Mission objectives may include sounding density or detection probability, enabling the AUV to calculate the actual waypoints, operational parameters and sensor configuration,” says the company. ”In-mission adaptive execution allows HUGIN Edge to make several decisions autonomously, continuously replanning during mission execution as more information about the surrounding environment is gathered by the sensors.” The smallest of the HUGIN family, Edge is less than four metres long and weighs just 300kg, with batteries providing the power supply. Hear VP of Marine Robotics Sales Richard Mills at the Oi event speaking to MJ editor Debbie Mason in our podcast here. “After two years of disruption across the different industries we serve it was hugely satisfying to be able to open Oi in London,” said show director David Ince. “We saw thousands of ocean professionals getting back to the core of our business, face-to-face events.” Oceanology International returns to London in 2024, but next year will also be held in San Diego and Abu Dhabi.

Nexxiot launches upclose cargo tracker Nexxiot’s upgraded sensor can monitor and give real-time visibility of cargo within containers. Digitisation company Nexxiot has launched the latest in its line of monitoring sensor devices, ’Cargo Monitor’, which differs from its existing products by tracking cargo on a much closer scale. Whereas existing products such as ’Globehopper Edge’ are focused on monitoring the position, meovement, handling activities and use of each container while it is shipped, the Cargo Monitor includes a more powerful transceiver, which is placed inside the container itself. It is then able to monitor the transport of higher value and more conditions-sensitive products such as perishables,

BAHRAIN BUYS FOLDING WORKBOAT FOR NAVAL FLEET WorkFloat has delivered a self-propelled foldable work float to the Kingdom of Bahrain to support its growing naval fleet. A floating work platform that can be folded away has been built for Bahrain’s naval fleet.by UK builder WorkFloat. The 12x6m floating platform will be used for support tasks in the port and includes a crane that can lift just under half a tonne at 13m, a deck load capacity of over 10t, a 2t deck winch that can be used for mooring work, a central moon pool for drilling or GI work, full electrics and navigation, bow loading ramps for military vehicles, spud cans for 10m spud legs, a retractable bow thruster and 2 x 70hp Yamaha high thrust outboards that give 7 knots and 1.2t of bollard pull. It is also built to the MCA workboat code and complies with relevant class standards for lifting and stability. The platform can be stowed with all equipment inside a standard shipping container.
WorkFloat won the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ award at Seawork in 2019, which was the last time it could be held in person before lockdowns paralysed the world. The event will be back on in style in June WorkFloat won the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ award at Seawork in 2019, which was the last time it could be held in person before lockdowns paralysed the world. The event will be back on in style in June. ’It is a massive milestone for the business to design, build, deliver and then commission this WorkFloat for the BDF,” said WorkFloat MD and founder Toby Budd.
WorkFloat says it is now designing the next evolution of the system, a modular system named WF1200, which can be jacked up out of the water, will have similar frame structure and floats with a higher payload capacity and bigger crane options. With its modularity the product is closer in design to the firm’s other product, ScaffFloat. “The ability to ‘jack up’ has been driven by demand from existing geotechnical, civils and diving clients,” said Budd. “Being so light and easy to mob, the WF1200 system will be able to provide the benefits of a jack up barge on inland waterways, under bridges, landlocked lakes and lochs and other sites that traditional larger jack up barges can’t access.

ULSTEIN PLEDGES TO FILL HEAVY LIFT SHORTAGE HOLE Ulstein has vowed to fill the shortage of heavy lift vessels which is jeopardising the timely installation of increasingly large next-generation wind turbines Market analysts are projecting a shortage of specialised equipment as soon as 2025, putting the future of offshore wind farms at risk. Ulstein believes its proven, off-the-shelf heavy lift vessels, in particular its HX118 design, can help reduce that risk. “We worked for four years on the development of this design, using our unique ‘Ulstein Blended Design’ methodology, CFD simulations, and knowledge gained from the ALFA LIFT design and Aegir conversion,” said Ko Stroo, lead naval architect and product manager in Ulstein Design & Solutions. “Combining our vast track record in heavy lift vessels with business case analysis and latest installation technologies resulted in what basically is the Mk3 version of our SOC 5000 design.”
We have already received favourable pricings on this HLV design from multiple yards worldwide The ULSTEIN HX118 design is the third evolution of the ULSTEIN SOC 5000 design, of which several vessels are currently in operation or under construction, including Heerema’s ‘Aegir’ and Subsea 7’s ‘Seven Borealis’. AMPELMANN WINS CONTRACT FOR OFFSHORE SUPPORT Ampelmann has increased its level of support for offshore services in the Ivory Coast. Dutch offshore access provider Ampelmann will support maintenance work on a floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) for MMA Offshore, the Australian marine and subsea services company, in the Côte d’Ivoire. An A-type motion compensated gangway has been fitted to MMA Offshore’s MMA Privilege, a FiFi One dynamically positioned DP2 workboat designed for platform commissioning field maintenance tasks and coil tubing operations. It has a Liebherr lattice boom crane for surface-to-platform lifts of up to 50 tonnes and can accommodate 239 people. Ampelmann’s A-type gangway has already been fitted to the ship, which has arrived at location and will ensure. smooth and continuous crew change operations from the bopat to the FPSO, says Ampelmann. Ampelmann says it is well known in the West African offshore energy market, with more than 100,000 transfers having been carried out in the Côte d’Ivoire alone.

In September 2021, a huge offshore oil discovery was made in the area by Italian energy firm Eni, with potentially 2 billion barrels of oil and 2.4 trillion cubic feet of associated gas. A well has been drilled about 60km off the coast in about 1,200m of water, using a Saipem 10,000 drill ship that reached a depth of 3,445m in 30 days, Eni said. Subsequent exploitation should mean a huge boost for offshore energy services, but while Ampelmann confirmed it was working for oil and gas operations, it refused to say who the operator was.

VESSEL REPAIR & MAINTENANCE
WORLD’S LARGEST CONTAINER SCRUBS UP TO EXPECTATIONS Alfa Laval has monitored the performance of its new exhaust scrubbers over eight months on the world’s largest container vessel.
8 Alda Laval’s PreSOx exhaust scrubbers were fitted on the world’s largest container vessel Ever Ace
Swedish scrubber manufacturer Alfa Laval says the performance of its new design PureSOx scrubbers has matched expectations on the world’s largest container ship over eight months at sea. The Ever Ace, owned by Evergreen Marine, has two scrubbers with a shared water cleaning system, which Alfa Laval says provides maximum reliability with a minimal footprint. It was the first of 12 vessels to get the scrubbers in Evergreen’s A Class, which comprises container vessels of up to 24,000 TEU capacity. They are powered by a main engine of 60MW and five auxiliary engines of 4.5MW each. The two scrubbers, one for the main engine and the other
for the auxiliary engines, can operate in open or closed loop and require effective cleaning of the closed-loop circulation water. This is provided by a shared water cleaning system, based primarily on high-speed centrifugal separation. “The limited gas load during a short shipyard sea trial was not enough to test the full WCS cleaning capacity, so Alfa Laval experts followed Ever Ace during a September journey from the UK to Germany and the Netherlands,” said Alfa Laval. “Along the route, the WCS could be observed during longer periods with high engine loads. Cleaning performance was high throughout the voyage, even when much larger amounts of circulation water reached the WCS.”
One container ship repaired in four ports Corroded scrubber pipes on four vessels have been repaired by Belgian underwater repair firm Hydrex. In one case Hydrex engineers followed the vessel to four different ports so that it could carry out the work without affecting the ship’s schedule. In total, six corroded pipes were replaced on three container vessels and a tanker, with each new pipe coated with the Ecospeed coating manufactured by Hydrex sister company Subsea Industries. The coating can be applied in advance as long as no welding needs to be done near to the coated area, or in situ once the welding has been done.
44 | APRIL 2022
8 One of six scrubber pipes repaired by Hydrex
Hydrex is keen to carry out repairs without interfering with the ship’s schedule, and in the last container ship’s case, engineers had
to carry out the work in four different ports – Dunkirk, Le Havre, Antwerp and Rotterdam. The pipe was examined and had a cofferdam installed in Dunkirk, before sailing for Le Havre, where divers and technicians loaded up the new pipes and equipment. In Antwerp the damaged scrubber pipe was replaced with a new Ecospeed-coated one, and finally in Rotterdam the cofferdam was removed and a final check carried out. All pipe replacements were built at Hydrex’s warehouse in Antwerp and installed by the firm’s certified wet and dry welders and technicians.

“Climate change, circular economy, new energy sources will dramatically affect the naval business model and drive innovation in an inprecedented manner,” the company says. ”This creates enormous possibilities for designers, shipbuilders and -owners.”
A water injection dredger has been launched at the Neptune Marine shipyard near Dordrecht in the Netherlands. Jan De Nul’s new Pancho, based on an existing Neptune workboat, is destined for the Argentine dredging market, hence its Spanish name. A second water injection dredger from the same shipyard, with the same dimensions and characteristics, has been ordered by Jan De Nul. “The knowledge and experience of the newbuilding department within Jan De Nul is impressive, and it was inspiring to come up with a dredger in a short time, based on an existing workboat design, that will distinguish itself in the market through its dredging performance and robustness,” said Martijn Schouten, sales manager at Neptune Marine’s shipyard business.

the soil material to move. This technique is especially suitable in areas with recent sediment deposits or for moving fine sand over shorter distances. “The experience with our existing fleet of water injection dredgers taught us that there was a need for a more compact vessel to reach the smaller corners in ports and rivers,” said Jan Van de Velde, head of Newbuilding at Jan De Nul. “However, despite her compact character, the Pancho has a depth range of more than 20 metres! Perfect for maintenance dredging,” he added. Jan De Nul has five water injection dredging vessels in its fleet, including the Pancho and its sister vessel currently under construction. Pancho is scheduled to begin deployment in March.

EMSA STRENGTHENS SUPPORT AROUND SOMALIA AND LIBYA The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has agreed to step up its support EU Naval Force operations around Somalia and Libya The agency has signed two co-operation agreements under the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy to strengthen maritime awareness around Somalia and Libya. Operation Atalanta aims to tackle piracy and protect vulnerable vessels and humanitarian shipments off the coast of Somalia, while Operation Irini seeks to enforce a UN arms embargo on Libya. “By cooperating with EMSA in the areas of maritime security and surveillance, multiple sources of ship specific information and positional data can be combined to enhance maritime awareness for the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) in places of particularly high risk and sensitivity,” says EMSA. Both operations have already been in force for some time, but the agreements both give more access for the EU Naval Forces to EMSA’s surveillance platforms.
By cooperating with EMSA in the areas of maritime security and surveillance, multiple sources of ship specific information and positional data can be combined to enhance maritime awareness for the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) in places of particularly high risk and sensitivity
‘‘
Operation Atalanta has been active since 2011, and at the beginning of the year was expanded to include illegal activities at sea, such as weapons and drugs trafficking. “EMSA is providing EU NAVFOR with access to an integrated maritime monitoring solution which offers the possibility of consulting vessel position data, central reference databases and earth observation products,” says EMSA.
“This is integrated with EU NAVFOR data – such as vessel risk level based on vulnerability assessments – creating a specifically tailored maritime awareness picture. The new agreement extends the longstanding collaboration with EU NAVFOR for an indefinite period and is an example of how EMSA is serving maritime security and law enforcement communities worldwide.” Operation Irini was begun in March 2020 to implement an arms embargo against Libya using aerial, satellite and maritime assets. “The new cooperation agreement allows for access to EMSA’s Integrated Maritime Services platform and in particular to the agency’s Automated Behaviour Monitoring (ABM) capabilities,” says the agency. “These services help EU NAVFOR officers to keep a close eye on Libya’s ports as well as to monitor the flow of maritime traffic in the area and target specific vessels for inspection based on suspicious behaviour picked up by the ABM tool,” EMSA says. The European Maritime Safety Agency is a decentralised agency belonging to the European Union.

Permanent security tugboat supplied for River Elbe A permanently present tugboat is in place to secure the section between Brunsbüttel and Hamburg’s federal state border for the first time. The tugboat, FAIRPLAY-35, has been supplied by tender winner ARGE Küstenschutz, part of the Fairplay Towage Group. In late 2021, a tender was drafted by the Elbe-North Sea Waterways and Shipping Office (WSA Elbe-Nordsee) for a permanently present tugboat to harbour in
Stade-Bützfleth, be available 24/7 and able to take off on a mission within 15 minutes. The FAIRPLAY-35 was stationed on the Elbe from April 1 with the Brunsbüttel-Elbe control centre holding mission control and right of instruction on behalf of the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV). ARGE Küstenschultz won another two tenders from the WSV to supply emergency tugboats for the North and Baltic Seas. Nordic and Baltic operate on the basis of an emergency vessel concept that was

implemented by the federal government in 2001. It provides that multi-purpose vessels operated by the government are stationed in strategically selected locations along the German coast of the two seas so that a damaged ship can be reached within two hours. An additional land-based towing assistance team of four is also available and can be winched aboard a damaged vessel from a helicopter in case of emergency.
