GET IN THE KNOW WITH GREENPORT

Decision-makers from the port community will head to Bruges in October for GreenPort Congress & Cruise 2022

The 17th edition of the conference will be hosted by the Port of Anwerp-Bruges, Belgium from 18-20 October 2022.

“GreenPort is a truly unique event in the port space allowing a niche forum for the discussion of topics that drive environmental sustainability forward in the maritime industry. A must attend for anyone who is looking to take sustainability seriously and move beyond the green washing to real action,” said Matthew Wittemeier, Inform.

Apt host

GreenPort Congress & Cruise 2022 seeks to provide port authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines, logistics operators - with a meeting place to both learn about and discuss the latest in sustainable development and environmental practice.

The conference will cover a range of themes including fuel and energy provision for shipping, fuel and energy for port operations, building sustainable partnerships and green cruise ships.

The 2022 host of GreenPort Congress & Cruise, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, is one of the world’s foremost roll-on/rolloff deep-sea container ports, where at least 40 million tonnes of goods are transhipped annually. The offering of both intraEuropean and intercontinental services makes AntwerpBruges an important access port to the European markets.

Sustainability focus

The merger of Port of Antwerp and Port of Zeebrugge took place in April 2022 and it’s a bonus to be holding this year’s Congress at the port.

As a result of the merger, the ports are now able to strengthen their position within the global supply chain and continue their course towards sustainable growth.

Sustainability already formed a central part of the strategic direction in both Antwerp and in Zeebrugge, but Port of Antwerp-Bruges will set the bar higher.

Combining the industrial cluster in Antwerp and Zeebrugge’s location on the coast will create a unique opportunity to address the future energy challenges in Flanders and the wider region. As such, Port of Antwerp-Bruges will take up a leading position as an import hub for green hydrogen and will play an active and pioneering role in the hydrogen economy.

In addition, the port, in collaboration with its industrial and maritime customers, will continue its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and will examine methods of applying Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage (CCUS) in order to contribute to the transition towards a low-carbon port.
