BIOGRAPHY By way of an introduction, I started my career in B2B publishing working within the key vertical markets of transport, logistics, IT, agriculture and HR. All involved working closely with relevant trade bodies and associations on helping them recruit and develop new employees to their relevant industries. The insight I gained specifically with the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel Development) led me to be one of the launch directors of totaljobs.com. For the last nine years I then worked at wowcher.co.uk, which I joined at launch. I set up the UK and Ireland sales and analysis operations. Ultimately my team delivered 1000’s of new weekly offers to our 23m subscribers – or quite simply new customers to our clients. All my roles existed to help customers grow their business through candidate and customer acquisition.

JELTE LIEBRAND CEO and Founder of Savvy Navvy

BIOGRAPHY Jelte took part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 2014. He had plenty of sailing experience, but racing from San Francisco to New York was quite a bit different from anything he’d done before. Sailing thousands of miles off-shore, he learnt how difficult navigation can be. Updating charts, downloading weather forecasts, predicting boat speed, avoiding squalls with 50+ knots of wind; it all took hours and hours below deck, plotting courses on a computer whilst hanging on at a 45-degree heel. Jelte became convinced there should be an easier way. He spent two years researching and building the foundation for savvy navvy and in July 2017 he left his job at Google to fulfil his vision of an app built to be in every boater’s pocket - enabling more people to confidently and safely enjoy their time out on the water. Fast forward five years and with more than a quarter of a million users in more than 100 countries globally, savvy navvy is popular with both sailing and motor boaters, and increasingly used by water-sports enthusiasts, such as jet-skiers and kayakers, who want one easily accessible app to confidently plan their routes on the water. SIMON ANSLOW

Partner at VAT Services PKF Francis Clark

BIOGRAPHY Simon heads up PFK Francis Clark’s VAT, Customs & Indirect Tax Team. A broad experience of industry sectors and working with businesses from start-ups through to multinationals enables Simon to provide informed advice and guidance and offer practical solutions and options, from basic compliance and efficiency management, through to complex planning and dispute resolution. A 15-year career with HM Customs & Excise included investigation activity, legal advocacy and the obtaining of considerable technical and practical experience. Simon switched sides some years ago, firstly as a partner in a mid-tier firm and more latterly as a regional VAT director with a Top 10 practice, before joining Princecroft Willis, the predecessor firm of PKF Francis Clark, in 2009 to head up their VAT service. Land, property and construction matters present significant and ongoing VAT issues and Simon has considerable experience in assisting developers, construction firms, landlords and legal advisers in the residential, commercial, healthcare and holiday sectors. An area of particular expertise is that of the marine sector; Simon heads up the Indirect Tax Marine Team that provides the VAT & Customs advisory services to British Marine and its members; a former chairman of British Marine Wessex, Simon remains an active member of the committee and provides ongoing technical assistance to the Insurance Legal Financial Services Association arm of the British Marine Federation. Simon also works closely with sailing and training academies, the UK America’s Cup team, yacht clubs, brokers, boat builders and all areas of the marine sector, whilst maintaining a healthy working relationship with HMRC’s Marine & Pleasurecraft teams to ensure that our clients can receive the best possible service. Simon’s approach is very much about working with the client and what they need, his philosophy being “Taking it back to basics, to understand who does what, for whom, when, where and for how much – first we make it right, then we make it better”. When not plying his trade in the dark arts of VAT, Simon can be found spending time indulging in his other passions – family, films, food and all things cars!

The mission was to connect like minded people to the unknown sport for the first time and the sublime sheltered waters of Falmouth Bay was Wesup’s greatest facilitator. Sean pioneered adventure SUP in the UK and paved the way for the expansion of peoples ideas on the full scope of the sport. He set a number of world firsts that include becoming the first person to SUP the entire 242 miles of rugged Cornish coastline, unsupported and in just 7 days. He was the first to Wild SUP the entire width of Scotland through the 142 mile Caledonian Canal and he was the first to paddle the entire remote wilderness of Sognefjord which is Norway’s longest, deepest and narrowest fjord system. He also established the first SUP retreat in Montenegro and has spent a decade guiding paddlers in some of the most stunning environments on the planet. He also established the Wesup Sanctuary Foundation whiched uses SUP to promote positive mental health and the Wesup Academy to train the generation of quality, center ready SUP instructors. As SUP began to rise in popularity by 2016, Sean built an innovative shipping container conversion that became the most stylish, modern watersport center in the country and its success was revolutionary for the business and the sport. That shipping container module became ‘Wesup HQ’ - an out of the box activity center that could be fully developed off site and delivered anywhere in the world, plugged in and played out at any worthy waterside spot. Now spanning 3 South Coast counties and operating one of the fastest growing leisure, lifestyle & hospitality business in the UK, Sean is now helping the maritime industry and associated businesses to capitalise on the opportunity of SUP as the fastest growing and most accessible water sport of all time.

Alasdair is Chairman of the technical group within EU Commission’s official forum (RSG) tasked with providing formal interpretations on legislation and standards related to the Recreational Craft Directive and represents the UK on several ISO committees, helping to draft the next round of industry standards for small craft. As such, he is recognised internationally as a leading expert in the field of boat compliance and is widely consulted by governments as well as industry. Despite his role as CEO, Alasdair very much likes to be out and about in boat yards and still conducts a number of regulatory inspections of small craft every month. When not working he enjoys sailing holidays around the world whenever possible.

British Marine Conference. Health benefits of Blue Space DR WILLIAM BIRD CEO of Intelligent Health

BIOGRAPHY William has helped transform the health of millions of people across the UK through innovative initiatives he has developed. As a family GP, he began to get his patients more active by setting up the first Health Walk scheme in April 1996. This led to him creating the Green Gym one year later as he realised that companionship and contact with nature were major driving forces in keeping people active. As CEO and Founder of Intelligent Health, William developed the hugely successful Beat the Street programme which has encouraged more than 500,000 people across the world to get moving and improve their health. William’s leadership has grown the company from just three employees to an innovative industry leader in promoting physical activity. Ever since he was a child, William has been fascinated by the connection between humans and their environment, so it was inevitable he would set up a company whose aim to improve health through community interventions. Dr William Bird said: “Our bodies are meant to be active, and we’re designed to be connected to nature. We’re hunter-gatherers and our bodies currently exist in an alien environment of being indoors all the time and living under artificial lights and so on. Owing to this, our bodies respond with chronic inflammation which leads to cancer and long-term illness. “The technology behind our programmes is an enabler to make the game simple and accessible to a whole population. The real aim of the game is to get people moving and connect them to their place.” William has worked as a GP since 1991 and has been awarded ‘Innovation Doctor of the Year’ in 1996 and ‘Innovation Team of the Year in 1997’. In 2015, he was voted as one of the top 30 most influential conservationists in the UK by BBC Wildlife Magazine, named by The Independent as one of the top 100 people making Britain a happier place, and in 2010 was appointed MBE for services for health and physical activity. He has worked for the World Health Organisation to develop a physical activity strategy for the Middle East which is now being implemented in many of the countries there and also worked on an innovative project for the Met Office, developing Health Forecasting that has resulted in heat health forecasts, cold weather forecasts and forecasting workload for the NHS. As a result of his substantive knowledge and experience in nature, health and physical activity, William is also heavily in demand as a speaker: delivering addresses to many conferences and organisations including Yale University, American Medical Association, British Medical Association, Local Government Association and The Wildlife Trust. He adds: “I like to think way beyond the current constraints of normal healthcare; developing innovative projects that will have a lasting and meaningful change for the health and wellbeing of entire communities.”

BIOGRAPHY I have ticked off quite a few sectors of the marine industry in the last 21 years but have been part of it my whole life. At Southampton Institute I studied (yes, studied) Maritime Leisure Management. During university I worked for Sunsail and then a chandlery. After university a career in boat sales seemed like a great idea and, as a member of ABYA, I worked on the Thames and the South Coast before moving into the world of Finance with Lombard and, more recently, insurance with Haven Knox-Johnston (although it was in it’s brief stay as MS Amlin at the time). I am also chairman of the PSA with British Marine, love cycling and walking my dogs with my family.
