REVISED AND ENLARGED LAYOUT FOR SIBS 2021 Southampton International Boat Show returns this month with an enlarged site hosting more than 350 exhibitors and more than 500 craft. Show organiser, British Marine, has redesigned the layout with five zones each featuring different types of watersports activities. The event will see several new companies exhibiting alongside well-established international brands and boatbuilders. “From anchors to almanacs, boat hooks to boat shoes, shackles to superyachts, waterskis to watermakers, this year's show really does have everything for everyone, and all the support and guidance from our exhibitors and members who are just keen to re-engage in a safe way, with customers old and new,” said Lesley Robinson, BM CEO. This year also sees a higher level of experiential involvement for visitors with capacity to get on the water increased by 30%. Over the ten days of the show, there's more than 14,000 opportunities for visitors to get a float on everything from dinghies, kayaks, sups through to RIBS, powerboats, sailing yachts and even a Tall Ship. “The success of a show is on creating an all-inclusive experience for everyone, and also attracting the right type of customer for every exhibitor, whether it's the ultra-high net

Boomtime continues for boating The latest figures from America show new power boat sales have remained strong with new registrations up 24% on a rolling 12-month period through to May. The figures reflect the continued interest and demand that just about everyone – both on the other side of the Atlantic and on this side - has been seeing over the past year. Sales have been strong across the board, from wake sport boats, day boats to cruisers and shipments of boats have also been strong. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s Monthly Shipment Report, wholesale shipments of new boats rebounded in May, up 12% on a rolling 12-month year-on-year basis. The figures are without doubt positive and reflect the robust position boating is currently in and show the progress that has been made getting new people into boating, helped in the UK by initiatives such as On the Water that promotes and highlights the benefits of on-water activities and encourages people to have a go at watersports. Across the water in the US, a study carried out has shown that those almost 60% of those looking at Boat Trader, YachtWorld and boats.com websites were firsttime buyers. The study also showed the company’s rate of conversion rose to 17.5% - meaning that one in every six sales leads submitted on a Boats Group portal converted to a boat sale. This is an amazing figure that continues to reflect that once consumers have informed information, together with good customer service, they are keen to spend their savings on getting onto the water. And it’s been shown that people are also buying boats quickly, with the American study showing nearly half buying craft within 90 days of their first search and 67% purchasing within 180 days of their first contact. The challenge now for the industry will be to capitalise on this behavioural change and ensure that those who are new to water activities stay and continue to enjoy them. Nurturing these new customers will be critical as we all work towards sustaining interest over the next few years once other actives including foreign holidays and travel abroad return. It’s something British Marine has been working on, with this month seeing the return of Southampton International Boat Show – this year with a new look and format and enlarged footprint. The show will provide more chances than ever before for visitors to get out on the water on a variety of craft. More than 14,000 opportunities are available for visitors to get afloat on everything from dinghies, kayaks, SUPS through to RIBS, powerboats, yachts or a Tall Ship. And there’s also a new Community Day, with its discounted tickets for locals, aimed at encouraging even more people to have a go at boating. It’s been boom time for a few months now; the next few months will be critical in sustaining interest and ensuring that bust does not necessarily follow.

HELM was acquired earlier in the summer by boat hire and yacht charter company, Borrow A Boat. Both companies will jointly exhibit at the Southampton International Boat Show.

Candela has unveiled a new electric outboard with a revolutionary design which the company claims is four times more efficient than its rivals. The C-POD electric pod drive features a completely submerged motor with two propellers, reducing maintenance, increasing efficiency and giving an almost completely silent boat ride. “What would be the best boat propulsion one could imagine?” asked Gustav Hasselskog, Candela's founder and chief executive. “Here are some ideas,” he continued. “Electric, completely silent, without oil changes and with an almost unlimited lifetime. Add to that almost no losses
NEW ELECTRIC OUTBOARD WITH UNDERWATER MOTOR
8 The C-POD has a revolutionary design which splits the thrust between two propellers
- converting most of the energy to thrust." Torpedo-like In most boat engines, the motor is typically situated in a box above the waterline, transferring thrust to the propeller through shafts, gears and bearings. The
C-POD eliminates the need for this by mounting two electric motors under the water in a torpedo-like socket, directly powering its two propellers. This brings the benefits of a ready-made cooling system from the water, almost silent operation and greatly reduced wear and tear with more than 3,000 hours of maintenance-free operation. “For the average leisure boat user, this means you can just use the motor and forget about the usual hassle with service and winterisation,” said Gustav.

How I got into this industry... I worked part-time in the family business, BHG Marine from the age of 13 and although vowing never to get sucked in, and after a few jobs elsewhere and a year travelling overseas, I joined full time in 1990 until we sold the business in 2019. Best advice I’ve ever received... don't be too concerned about what your competition are doing - focus on what you do and make it better than the rest and keep pace with market changes and adapt accordingly. Learn from the past and always look forward. One thing the industry needs less of is... negativity - I've worked plenty of boat shows where it's all doom and gloom from the exhibitors, which ultimately affects the visitor

Brexit - just an absolute mess whatever your viewpoint is. Best place I’ve been... I'm lucky to have travelled a fair bit, but if I have to name one, then Heron Island on The Great Barrier Reef, Australia - just stunning and an archetypical small tropical island with the best snorkelling, fishing and diving. Don't worry about... never worry about what you can't control - it's pointless. Focus on the things you can change and worry about them! Favourite meal... having lived on the coast all my life it has to be a cold seafood platter with a

Family and friends are also incredibly important to me. How I cope with stress... a very long wild walk and a glass of something strong. Something about you that people might be surprised by... having had management roles for 20+ years, I like making things, but my speciality is brewing beer, cider and fermenting, pickling and cooking with locally foraged plants. I am also competent in the kitchen and do most of the cooking at home.

RYA launches zero carbon by 2050 plan The Royal Yachting Association has launched ambitious plans outlining how the boating industry can achieve zero carbon by 2050. The report, 'Pathways to Zero: The RYA's Vision for a Zero Carbon Recreational Boating Sector by 2050' has been developed to deliver on the RYA's Sustainability Strategy, launched last year, to significantly lower emissions in the leisure marine sector. “The development of this report follows wide research across the sector, analysis of sustainability forecasts, as well as speaking with RYA members and marine businesses,” explained Phil Horton, RYA environment and sustainability manager. “The report outlines the key areas where we have identified a need for change, many of those actions included will be relatively easy fixes. However, other actions will require investment, whether that be in time or funding." The report includes more than one hundred individual actions, such as moving to more sustainable fuels throughout the leisure marine industry and facilitating electric propulsion. Sailing events and venues will be designed with sustainability a key focus including using renewable energy where possible and encouraging the use of public transport for spectators. The RYA will also continue to lobby government and work with other sporting bodies.

HanseYachts has unveiled a new motorboat brand aimed at sports-minded sailors in the weekender segment, the third to carry its 'Made in Germany' label. Developed in cooperation with yacht designer Bill Dixon, the new RYCK brand is named after the river that flows through Greifswald, where the brand was conceived and designed, connecting the main production site of HanseYachts to the Baltic Sea. "The very name of HanseYachts comes from the extremely successful Hanseatic League, in which Greifswald played an important role,” explained chief executive Dr Jens Gerhardt. “We continue the shipping, trading and boatbuilding traditions of this city and are constantly developing them further. The choice of name closes another circle for us, but also represents a declaration of loyalty from HanseYachts to this region."

MAN DROWNS AFTER MOTORBOAT SINKS The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has asked the leisure marine industry to remind small boat owners and users to familiarise themselves with safety procedures following an investigation into the drowning of a man with learning difficulties. On 31 May 2020, the 12m leisure boat Globetrotter sank in just five metres of water during a sea angling trip off the coast of
Fleetwood, England. The vessel's owner, his 40-yearold son and a friend all entered the water. None were wearing personal flotation devices and, despite the efforts of the crews of two other boats, the owner's son lost his life. Following its investigation, the MAIB concluded that Globetrotter was not in a seaworthy condition and had not been
properly prepared for a trip to sea. Despite being an experienced boat user the owner had little appreciation of risk and had inadequately planned the trip, neglecting safety procedures such as the wearing of personal flotation devices. Application A new planning application has been lodged to build a town with almost 2,000 homes and a marina on the site of a former North Sea oil and gas fabrication yard. The proposed development at Whiteness, on the Moray Firth near Ardersier, was given the green light in principle in 2007. However, planning permission has now expired and developer Ardersier Port, which separately has approval to resurrect the 741-acre site as a working port, has sought to renew it. Planning officers have recommended to councillors that permission be granted in principle.

The Ruskin Museum and the Campbell family have made a final appeal to Bill Smith for the return of Donald Campbell's recordbreaking Bluebird K7. The Campbell family gifted Bluebird to the Coniston Institute & Ruskin Museum in 2006 which then passed it to Bill Smith for restoration. Despite repeated requests, he is yet to return the boat, instead threatening to break it up and insisting that parts used to repair it belong to him. “Enough is enough,” said Donald's daughter, Gina Campbell. “I want my father's boat in the wing that was designed to house it without further delay. Both I and the rest of the family gave Bluebird K7 to the Museum and we back them wholeheartedly in their efforts,” she added. LEGAL ACTION AGAINST BOAT OWNER The owner of a large unpowered boat used as a houseboat, who failed to comply with directions to move the barge from Environment Agency (EA) owned public moorings on the non-tidal River Thames, has been warned about the consequences of breaking the law. The EA prosecuted Stephen Crowe after his boat named Hope IV was moored to EA owned riverbanks in Surrey for periods far longer than the maximum 24 hours allowed on that part of the Thames. A court heard how it had become necessary for the EA to begin issuing formal enforcement notices in May and June of 2019 directing Crowe to move his vessel from an EA shortstay mooring site on the riverbank at Walton-on Thames in Surrey. His failure to then regularly move the 85-ft unpowered boat led to a further formal enforcement notice being issued in July 2019 directing Crowe to A 12-month extension to the start date for the new post-Brexit certification rules for CE products has been confirmed by the Government. The extension means CE marked goods can continue to be placed on the market in Great Britain until January 1 2023, and has been welcomed by the RYA. The UKCA marking, which came into effect on January 1 2021 can be used now, but in most cases, businesses will have more time to adjust to the new requirements. Legal proceedings The EA began legal proceedings after a Harbour Master Notice of Directions was not complied with. “We strongly advise all boat owners whether buying or bringing a boat on to the river, to give serious consideration to the size
and type of vessel and how to comply with landowner mooring requirements before committing to owning and keeping a boat on the river,” said Colin Chiverton, environment manager for the River Thames at the EA. At Staines magistrates' court on 23 July, Stephen Crowe, now of London Road, Kingston-upon-Thames, pleaded guilty to an offence

new legal requirements and to ensure that the correct procedures are in place,” said Howard. “We will continue to liaise with Government and British Marine as guidance develops.”

Assumptions can be very dangerous. While there's a chance that a decision made on a hunch might be correct, there's also the risk that it'll be found wanting and employees are often advised to pursue claims to protect their rights. As we saw last month, employment myths are common. So much so, that Adam Bernstein spoke to two employment lawyers for their views on the scenarios most likely to cross their desks. In the second part of this story, he sought the opinion of Chloe Themistocleous, senior associate, Eversheds Sutherland, to see where she thinks employers go wrong. In her opinion, employment contracts and in particular, the view that if there is no written contract between the employer and employee, there is no contract at all, is top of her most troublesome myths. She states, “this myth may have sprung out of the misconception that the only contracts that are valid are written contracts.” In fact, she adds, “the contractual relationship can be based on what the employer and employee have said to each other and their subsequent course of conduct.” Worryingly for employers, where they have failed to provide clear terms when they were able and obliged by law to do so, employment tribunals often find in favour of the employee. And so, in Chloe's opinion, “employers should be careful to provide a written contract, signed by both the employee and a representative of the employer, when each new employee starts work.” Not having a contract can not only lead to a dispute about the terms but also a claim for up to four weeks' pay for failure to provide written terms. 14 | SEPTEMBER 2021
DEBUNKING EMPLOYMENT LAW MYTHS - PART TWO 8 Chloe Themistocleous is a senior associate at Eversheds Sutherland
Public holidays Next comes the understanding that employees have a right to have the day off on a public holiday and, if they do work, they must be paid more for it. This misconception, in Chloe's mind, comes from the term 'public holiday'. Experience has taught her that employers assume that, as these days are generally considered to be days off, employees have the right to them. The truth, she says, is that “there is actually no statutory right to time off, paid or otherwise, on any public holiday. Employees are entitled to the basic minimum holiday entitlement of 5.6 weeks each year, but how and when this is taken is up to the employer and employee.” That said, an employee's contract may specify that that they are entitled to take public
holidays off or to extra pay for working those days. And if the employer breaches the contract with regards to public holidays, Chloe warns that an employee could bring a claim against them. There is only one solution in her mind: “Ensure that the employer's position on public holidays is consistent between employees and, where possible, see that the position is set out in the employment contract.” References The third myth that Chloe tackles is the view that an employer is not allowed to give an employee a bad reference. While it's possible that employers believe this myth to be true because it can seem easier and less risky than giving a bad reference, there is nothing in law that states that an employer must give a reference for an employee.
However, as Chloe advises, “where the employer does give a reference, it should not be untrue or inaccurate. That said, there is no law preventing an employer from giving a negative, but factually faithful, reference in appropriate circumstances.” But employers must tread carefully she says: “If an employer gives a misleadingly positive reference, the recipient of the reference can bring a claim against the employer for negligent misstatement. Alternatively, if an employer gives a misleadingly negative reference, the exemployee may bring a claim for defamation. To reduce risks, some employers have a policy of only confirming the employee's dates of employment and position with the company, which sidesteps the issue altogether. But this can also
have a negative impact on those employees who deserve a glowing reference. Maternity leave The last myth that concerns Chloe is the belief that employees who are pregnant or on maternity leave cannot be dismissed. The root of this particular myth may lie in the stance that some employers take as they are conscious of not discriminating against pregnant employees or employees on maternity leave. Critically for Chloe, no employee is immune from dismissal. However, she warns “employers must be careful not to dismiss employees because of their pregnancy, pregnancyrelated illness or maternity leave. Such dismissals and redundancies are likely to be automatically unfair and discriminatory, which may lead to high compensation for loss of earnings and injury to feelings.” The only path open to employers is to follow their disciplinary process for these employees in the same way as for any other employee, but with consideration as to whether and to what extent the pregnancy has impacted their conduct or performance. In summary The very fact that employment lawyers invariably have long, and storied, careers indicates one thing - that employers and employees often fall foul of some often-complex rules and procedures. While workplaces disputes will never be eradicated, a proper understanding of the law, will be of greater help than an understanding of myths.

Gyro stabiliser Designed and manufactured to meet the needs of boats from 75ft to 90ft, the new MC² Quick Gyro X75 gyro stabiliser is small but powerful. “Thanks to its power, we are now able to stabilise boats up to 400 tons, differently from the 250 tons covered by the pre-existing range before its entry,” said Andy. If compared to other systems on the market, it is up to 30% smaller, measuring 1005mm in height x 950mm in width x 950mm in depth, added Andy.
NEW VERTICAL RETRACTING THRUSTER Using technology from its power and sailboat docking systems, Lewmar's design team has created a new vertical retracting thruster. The 125VRTT is aimed at the growing pontoon boat market, designed to provide ultimate manoeuvrability without compromise below the waterline. “Docking is always one of the most stressful parts of a day out for any new boater, so the Lewmar system is designed to give confidence and truly allow stress free low speed manoeuvring and docking,” said a Lewmar spokesperson. “Using a vertical retract system, the thruster is retracted into the hull to allow non-displacement hull speeds but can be deployed in a matter of
seconds below 5 knots to offer full control when approaching the dock - whatever the wind and tide conditions.” Thruster features include plug-together switch connectors, a 90-degree drive train featuring hardened and ground spiral bevel gears for maximum efficiency and quiet power transmission. In addition, the five-blade propeller produces equal direction thrust from a single propeller and maintenance is made easier with the Lewmar anode system secured with a large nut. The new thruster received its debut at a recent dealer meeting in Elkhart. 8 The 125VRTT retracts into a boat's hull

Quantum Marine unveils new rack and pinion Following the successful deployment of its MAGLift Rotor, Quantum Marine Stabilizers has launched a new rack and pinion actuator. The new rack and pinion 'R Series' was engineered and refined through the use of computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis and independent model testing, giving existing and new customers a system with significant operational advantages. Suitable for both newbuilds and retrofits, the new system is said to have a more compact footprint compared with traditional hull units with fins which gain a wider range of motion, improving zero speed performance. There is less wear and tear on the stabilizer system giving an extended vessel maintenance schedule of 15,000 hour for main bearing replacement and the unit is said to run more quietly as a result of the even distribution of torque on both sides of the gear wheel. The hydraulic cylinders can be rebuilt in place and there is an automated, mechanical locking pin and a manual locking pin to support maintenance operations and any emergency situations. Rapid acting relief valves protect the hull unit and hydraulic system should the vessel encounter any unexpected impact, broaching or slamming loads. SEPTEMBER 2021 | 15

When a specified time interval has elapsed and the helmsman is holding a steady course, SafeHelm2 re-engages the previous automatic steering mode. SafeHelm2 includes Furuno's Helm Movement Autopilot Control and Power-Assist Steering. The package includes all of the adapter fittings required to add the SafeHelm2 sensor to any hydraulic helm vessel with a new or existing reversing pump system and works with Furuno NavPilot 300 or NavPilot 711C autopilots with no additional software or hardware upgrade. In addition, Furuno has introduced two kits for importing external video sources into the NavNet TZtouch3 line of Multi Function Displays (MFDs). The VI-CSH8L kit allows for importing of video from the CSH8LMK2 Omni Sonar. The kit can also import video from the Furuno CH250 or CH300 Sonars, or from any source that outputs VGA video. The second kit, the VI-HDMI, has been developed to import streaming video from sources such as DVD/ BluRay players, PCs, and other electronics that offer HDMI output. SEPTEMBER 2021 | 19

GARMIN UNVEILS NEW ICE FISHING BUNDLE MARKETING KATE O’SULLIVAN is MD at ADPR
Approach Empathy and compassion should be central to your approach. We all learnt to be a little kinder during the pandemic and this is something that's (hopefully) here to stay. Whether it's with employees, customers or suppliers, leading with empathy will help build more successful companies, now and in the future. A crisis plan should be put in place. This situation has taught us the importance of being prepared for a crisis, even when you can't predict what might happen. Give yourself the best start by creating a crisis strategy. Identify what could go wrong, outline the potential threats and have an action plan so that you can be practical, effective and fast-acting if needed, minimising the damage to your business. 20 | SEPTEMBER 2021
Garmin International has unveiled a new chartplotter and transducer bundle with Panoptix LiveScope sonar. The LiveScope Ice Fishing Bundle LI is powered by a lithium battery said to weigh one-third of comparable lead acid batteries and offering up to 65% more battery life. “Garmin was the first to deliver live-scanning sonar technology to ice anglers, transforming the way they
pinpoint and follow schools of fish below the ice,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “Now with a lithium battery, powering your LiveScope has never been easier.” Everything you need for ice fishing Equipped with everything needed for hardwater fishing, the LiveScope Ice Fishing Bundle LI

Now that it's looking like, finally, the worst of the pandemic is over, some things will go right back to the way they were before, writes Kate O'Sullivan. But there are some more fundamental changes that look set to stay. Here are some key communications lessons. Customers and clients value honesty and transparency. This means being accountable, apologising when needed and delivering on brand promises. Internal communications are as important as external communications. One of the positive aspects of Covid-19 was that brands finally realised how important their staff are.

Water purifier debut at SIBS
Nautor's new Swan 48 will be on display at the Southampton International Boat Show this September. Designed by Germán Frers, the 14.75m fast cruiser/racer features a glass and foam core sandwich, vinylester resin, vacuum infusion, plus is postcured with a gelcoat finishing. The Swan 48 also includes two composite 100% watertight bulkheads, standard 9mm teak on sideways, cockpit and platform and a Maxi style toerail, with space for principal deck gear. Germán Frers explained that “the new design shows no distortion on the stern sections, the deck beam has been carried all the way back to the transom in combination with a twin rudder arrangement”. Design advantages include a positive control shallow rudder draft and extra sailing length. The hull is optimised to give max performance
heeling at 20 degrees, leaving the boat comfortable in any condition. The twin rudder configuration enhances the balance of the boat, preventing the broaching tendency and offering sensitive steering at full heeling angles. At the same
time, the reduced draft of the double rudder blades increases the cruising ability. For racing, a Performance Package, which includes performance keel, carbon mast allowing semi-square top mainsail, longer bowsprit and updated deck gear, is available on the option list.
The mast well aft brings several advantages: a good balance between mainsail and jib, the latter being able to give good power sailing downwind, the possibility to set four different forestays - furling gennaker, Code 0, jib and staysail, and a manageable mainsail.
How it works In development for several years by the Towcesterbased manufacturer, the system uses the latest intelligent ultraviolet LED technology to produce pure, clean drinking water that is to NSF 55 Class A Standards. The UV LED light is directed at the flow of water in the system, using a specific wavelength of light which changes the structure of the viruses and bacteria. This light affects the wall of the pathogen's cells causing irreversible damage to the DNA and RNA in a process known as thymine dimerisation. The cells cannot recover or reproduce and so are rendered ineffective and the water safe to use. 24 | SEPTEMBER 2021

eco-friendly LaPasserella electric gangway and LaScala electric bathing ladder at Southampton Boat Show 2021. Introduced to the market earlier this year, the gangway and bathing ladder use the latest electronic technology to make the products lighter, more efficient, quieter and more environmentally-friendly. The platform is available with either a synthetic teak or a woven rope surface, has LED lighting and can be operated from a smartphone using the Besenzoni Control Device App or via the standard remote control provided. Timage will also launch its new Sentry range of intelligent control systems including a new MFD lighting control system and Bluetooth remote switch.

The Sentry Remote Switch and Sentry MFD App - which enables onetouch and remote control of electrical systems on board - will also be demonstrated. In addition, the Powerwings steering column
digital switching system from Gussi Italia will be shown on the Timage stand. Powerwings is designed to give users control over systems on board. The paddles connect into the NMEA 2K system on board and can be used to control a wide variety of components in a similar
fashion to the stalks found behind the wheel in the automotive sector. Equipment that can be controlled via the paddles include Timeage's Gallinea windscreen wiper systems, audio such as Rockford Fosgate products, trim tabs, navigation screen functions and engine controls.
NEW CLASSIC AND DAY BOAT ZONE New for this year's Southampton International Boat Show, is a dedicated Classic and Day Boat Zone, with a myriad of craft all in one place, from new day boat designs to restored classics. Among the displays will be a Cornish Crabber Shrimper 21, a classic design yacht featuring modern technology with an electric pod drive motor from ePropulsion and a carbon mast. Also on show will be the restored 1946 Osbourne Day Cruiser from Dennett Boat Builders, alongside Star Yachts' brand-new Bristol 6m open launch, a retro styled wooden yacht with an integral swim platform. Combining the look of a traditional yacht with high-performance sailing, Swallow Yachts will display its BayCruiser 23 and BayRaider Expedition. The craft incorporate a water ballast system and carbon masts, making them lighter on the water and enabling them to be trailer sailed.
“The Classic and Day Boat Zone is for the boat lover and enthusiast,” said Lesley Robinson, CEO of show organiser Lesley Robinson. “It's where age old skills of craftsmanship and restoration combine and where owners, builders, riggers, and enthusiasts all get together to show off their craft, display their skills, share stories, and plan their next adventures.” For those who enjoy watching traditional woodworking skills, Willow Bay Boats will be demonstrating their craftsmanship by building a clinker dinghy on their
stand during the show. This year will also see several boat-owners' groups and associations at the show, including the Atalanta, Legend, Nicholson 32, Hunter, Westerly and the Old Gaffers Association, which will display a modern gaffer - the Gaffling - a 13ft 13in modern interpretation of a gaff rig from designer Andrew Wolstenholme. There will also be the chance to have a go on the water onboard some historic and restored craft including the 1919 Tall Ship Morgenster and the round the world 72ft racing yacht, Global Challenger.

PROFILE
RAY BADMINTON SMG Europe MD
For SMG Europe MD, Ray Badminton, his career was always going to focus on computers and electronic devices - it's in his genes. In the 1970s, Ray's father Bert was one of the UK's first computer sales people and as a child growing up in the New Forest he was fascinated by Bert's accumulation of computer circuits and dial-up machines. “My father used to bring home devices for me to play with and my natural curiosity prompted me to rip them apart and then leave them lying on the floor.” A business studies and maths degree at Warwick University followed and despite toying with the idea of becoming a business accountant, the lure of technology and sales was too strong. Experience Ray joined GEC in 1981, launching modems for the consumer market, gaining experience in sales, marketing and distribution. A few years later he moved into data communication and networking products for the company and then moved to Racal in Hook. In the early 90s, Ray joined Microsoft. “It was when technology was really beginning to take off and Windows 95 was coming onto the market. I went to Seattle for the launch which was a great experience.” A stint at Dell computers followed, but having seen his father set up his own computer sales business, Ray decided he too wanted to be an entrepreneur. In 2000, Ray set up EVO Distribution, launching the Memory-Map navigation software system. “Similar to Google Maps now, I spent a year asking OS maps for a licence to sell digital maps to
solve and recommend customer solutions.” SMG distributes around 60 brands and Ray is excited about the new tech coming onto the market. “We're missing METS, so actively search for products and brands that are ahead of the technology curve.”
consumers.” Perseverance paid and Ray's company was the first to offer OS digital maps. With the help of his wife Charlie they ran the business out of their bedroom in Milford-on-Sea. Niche Within four years, having discovered a niche in the market, the business and employee numbers grew to 30. “Our USP was that we could produce OS maps for land, as well as sea and air aviation charts, which meant Memory-Map was in high demand.” Ray appointed SMG to distribute Memory-Map and after a 15-year partnership, Ray and SMG's previous MD, Chris Northmore, decided to merge their businesses. “Chris wanted to take a step back and become chairman, and I was keen to see how I could move the business forward.” After becoming MD of the UK's largest marine electronics distributor in November 2015, Ray was quick to upgrade SMG's technology, systems and
processes; a move that paid dividends when the pandemic hit. “As we were already on the 'cloud', our tech was transportable and staff could take PCs and desktop IP phones home, ensuring we maintained service levels.” Sales target While the early stages of the pandemic prompted sluggish sales, during the summer months of 2020, sales soared. “Everything went mad and in a short period of time we smashed our yearly sales target.” Ray also focused on

boosting expertise at the Plymouth-based business, appointing staff to explain the systems to SMG's marine electronics customers, and opening a new showroom and training facility in Portsmouth. “I'm keen to compliment the skills of our brilliant workforce with people from outside the industry who bring in new ideas, technology and methods of working. This ensures our marine electronics expertise adds value and we're a company that can problem-
Technology Discussing his career highs, Ray, says it's selling: “Whether a small sale or big deal, I enjoy being able to deliver the right technology for our customers.” And as usual for most people grappling with tech: “The lows are when it doesn't work as expected - but our guys are good at working out what's needed to put it right.” Lessons learnt over the years? “Attention to detail always delivers results. It's important to create a good impression which is why I like our documents to have the correct spellings, colours etc.” In 'his day', Ray was a passionate windsurfer: “As well as the south coast beaches. I was one of those guys clogging up the airport baggage areas travelling with huge amounts of gear to far flung places seeking sun, sea and most importantly wind.” He also enjoys sailing, having taken a career gap year prior to running his own business, to pass his Yachtmaster exams. “Whenever I get on a boat now, people ask me for technical support, so I end up playing with screens, rather than sailing.” The business, twin nine year-old daughters and a Spaniel/Weimaraner cross have temporarily curtailed most personal activities, but Ray wouldn't have it any other way. “It's about being there and supporting your family.” 8 Ray's father Bert was one of the first computer sales people in the UK
