One of the oldest chandleries in the UK, Arthur Beale, is to close its shop doors in Shaftesbury Avenue after 150 years of business at the premises. The chandlery has suffered with the impact of the Covid-19 lockdowns and says it can no longer warrant paying the rents that a central London shop demands. “We were left in a very precarious financial state as a result of the pandemic and were unsure if we were going to survive at all,” said a spokesman. “We have no choice but to leave and move on to pastures new.” In addition, two new investors, Hugh Taylor and James Keef have taken over the business and will inject capital and management expertise into the company.

Hugh has a commercial background in marketing and previously ran an ecommerce wine business. James has had an international career in finance and lives in Sweden. Alasdair Flint will continue to be a shareholder and a director of the company. The company has leased a new warehouse in Buckinghamshire and will continue to sell products online. In addition, its clothing range will be expanding. The directors are also looking to the future and hoping to have some form of London presence again by Christmas. The business was established as a rope maker more than 400 years' ago.

Boat shows are back in the UK With the UK slowly emerging from lock-down, I’ve noticed a lot more people smiling in the street and giving friendly greetings to each other. People are emerging from a very long winter in hibernation and almost blinking in the sun as they climb out, taking in their surroundings and enjoying being out and about again. And the country’s marine industry also seems to be emerging from hibernation, with countless new products being launched over the last few weeks and numerous new distributor signings. My inbox has been very busy with positive news from companies experiencing record orderbooks and record turnovers or investing in new or larger premises. It’s been a welcome change from the last few months when everyone kept their head and did everything they could to keep their business running smoothly. While it’s clear there are no doubt countless bumps still to be traversed, there is a lot more positivity around. There are still hurdles to be overcome – not least of which are supply issues and price increases, both of which are being blamed on Brexit and Covid in equal measure and I’ve heard of several unhappy boatbuilders as a result. However, returning to a positive note, this month saw the welcome return of boat shows to the UK in the form of MDL’s South Coast Boat Show, the first to be held for more than a year. From a buyer’s perspective, the show provided the perfect way to view a short list of boats, with the refreshing ability to compare different craft while also being able to touch and feel. While sellers, marketeers and buyers have adapted to video tours, sitting in front of a computer screen, everyone agrees there’s nothing like jumping onboard and seeing a craft in the flesh. And with appointments booked in advance, there was plenty of time to take a look at the individual boats without being worried about a queue of others also wanting to take a look. While the adverse weather may have put some people off attending, it was positive to hear that nearly 700 appointments had been booked by 500 potential buyers for the three-day show. For those exhibiting, it was great to talk to people face to face, knowing that those attending were - for the most part - serious buyers and for those viewing it was good to see not only the new designs and new developments that have continued to take place throughout the pandemic, but also have the time and space to be able to do so. MDL should be congratulated with its format that was made as Covid safe as possible - and for putting on the event. It’s clear the format works and is here to stay. Roll on the rest of the summer and more boat shows, the return of face-to-face networking and maybe, just maybe proper greetings again and the ditching of masks. Something else to look forward to?

Regeneration plans for the Rock Ferry Waterfront include a 24-hour marina, watersports centre and refurbishment of the pier and slipway. The Rock Ferry Waterfront Trust aims to raise sufficient funds through the 'Save our Slipway Campaign' to repair and upgrade the Grade II listed slipway on the River Mersey, near Birkenhead. “Our development proposals will give visitors much improved access to the river for a wide range of water related and other recreational activities,” said the Trust. Built in 1820 by ferry owner and operator, Thomas Morecroft, the slipway is still used by the Royal Mersey Yacht Club, Tranmere Sailing Club, fishermen and the community. The Ultimate Boat Company (UBC) has chosen sustainable material, DANU, as the composite of choice for its mixed double-handed offshore keelboat aimed at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Paris 2024 aims to be the first carbon neutral games and governing body World Sailing has stipulated that 90% of the weight of an Olympic boat needs to be recyclable by 2028. If selected for the inaugural event UBC's 'Olympic 32' will be the first composite racing yacht to achieve this - four years early. UBC has partnered with French design house, Finot-Conq Architectes and offshore yachtsman, Mike Golding OBE to develop the new yacht. “Our world urgently needs to find more sustainable and circular solutions, and DANU represents a major step forward,” he said. “The Olympic 32 is a one design yacht that's 100%

Strong, light and sustainable Named after the earthmother goddess of the Tuatha Dé Danann, DANU is comprised of a combination of styrene-free resin and sustainable fibres producing a material said to be stronger and lighter than glass fibre and less brittle than carbon fibre. Licensed by its patent holder, Exo Technologies, DANU's production method uses less raw material and reduces production waste. At end of life, the constituent components can be reversed to their virgin state, making DANU a fully recyclable product.

LACK OF CO ALARMS CONTRIBUTES TO DEATHS A number of avoidable errors including a lack of alarms contributed to the deaths of two sailors from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the findings of the Marine Accident Investigation Branch. On 4 December 2019, the bodies of two men were found on board motor cruiser Diversion whilst moored on the River Ouse in York. Skipper Ronnie Holmes and his friend Stephen Hewitt had been enjoying an evening with work colleagues before spending the night on board. Both were confirmed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Following investigation by the MAIB, it was found that a catalogue of errors had compounded a leak from the boat's dieselfuelled cabin heater

exhaust. Firstly the heater's exhaust silencer was not designed for marine use. Its connection to the exhaust pipe system was not gas tight and it had not been checked by a professional heater installer, nor serviced. Secondly the cabin ventilation system did not meet the requirements of the Boat Safety Scheme

meaning that the levels of carbon monoxide might have increased in the cabin at a faster rate. Lastly, the two men were unaware of the danger they faced because a carbon monoxide alarm had not been fitted. Similar accidents have occurred in the past. In 2014 and 2016 seven sailors died from carbon

monoxide poisoning in four separate incidents. Three of the boats were without an alarm, whilst the one on board the fourth did not work. A safety bulletin highlighting the importance of installing carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on boats with enclosed accommodation spaces was published last year.

The pandemic may still be churning, but business was brisk at the 2021 Palm Beach International Boat Show, writes David Schmidt. When the pandemic struck, few expected yacht sales to boom. Rather, many Americans, myself included, reckoned that Chicken Little was finally right. How (happily) wrong we were. The 2021 Palm Beach International Boat Show proved that in the yachting world, the sky is rising. “One clear indicator of the show's success was in boat and product sales,” said Andrew Doole, president of US Boat Shows at Informa Markets, which runs PBIBS. “Several exhibitors at this year's show have reported sales triple those from 2019, which is an outstanding metric considering there is limited inventory in the boating industry right now due to blockbuster sales in 2020. The show was a testament to the demand for products among boating enthusiasts.” Not bad, considering that the 2019 PBIBS generated $227.5 million US dollars in total sales. While final numbers for new-boat sales across the US for January and February are not available at the time of this writing, the preliminary report was positive. According to Vicky Yu, NMMA's senior director of business intelligence, newboat sales cooled slightly in early 2021, but were still 15% above 2020 levels. With US vaccine rollouts hitting pace, all signs are pointing to strong sales on the Pond's port side for the foreseeable future. Stay tuned for a deeper dive into new-boat sales next month. 6 | MAY 2021

QUEEN'S AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE RESCUE POLE

Reach and Rescue has received the Queen's Award for Innovation for its long-reach telescopic water rescue pole - an invention which has saved more than 50 lives since its introduction in 2020. Said to be the only one of its kind in the world, the rescue pole enables the emergency services and members of the public to quickly rescue someone in the water without

endangering themselves. The pole was developed in response to UK Fire and Rescue Services' need for effective water rescue equipment designed to keep the rescuer safe. “Creating innovative and bespoke rescue equipment designed to keep operatives safe is at the heart of what we do,” said Reach and Rescue director Jo Taylor MBE. Reach and Rescue's

lifesaving public-access water rescue system - the Portsafe - features the pole securely stored with an emergency throwline board. Numerous systems are located at high-risk public waterways across the UK. What does winning a Queen's Award mean for the team? “With the Queen's Award for Enterprise being an internationally recognised accolade, the marketing potential for us is phenomenal,” said Reach and Rescue's marketing manager Stuart Glover. But it is the lifesaving aspect that the team is most proud of. “How many apprentices out there can say that the work they do actually saves people's lives,” said apprentice Karen Shaw. “It's amazing.”

How I got into this industry... I was away on holiday and my mum saved the job pages from the local paper as she had spotted an advert for a production assistant and PA to the managing director at Oyster Yachts. I joined Oyster over 20 years' ago and I haven't looked back since. Best advice I’ve ever received... My first boss at a local construction firm told me 'do not assume as it makes an ass out of you and me' and it's always stayed with me. In our industry in particular, assumptions can lead to expensive mistakes.

One thing the industry needs less of is... Abandoned GRP hulls. As an industry we must look seriously at what to do with yachts when they reach end of life. Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... 'no offence, but...' is always followed by something offensive. Don't hide behind a criticism, just say it how it is. Best place I’ve been... I love Thailand; the people, the food and the opportunity to recharge. Don't worry about... The small things that go wrong or don't turn out as you expected. Life is too short and as Covid has shown us, we all need to be adaptable.

Interview by Alice Driscoll

Favourite meal... Salmon with some fresh vegetables or salad. You also can't beat a good slice of banana cake. One thing I couldn’t live without... La Roche-Posay sunscreen face spray is an essential for boat show season. How I cope with stress... I run, practice yoga and generally keep fit. You need a lot of energy in this business. It's important to switch off and have time for yourself. Something about you that people might be surprised by... I have eight rescue chickens.

UK expansion for Freedom Boat Club US-headquartered Freedom Boat Club is to expand to the UK with its first location here due to open this summer. The new club will be located at Trafalgar Wharf in Portsmouth, with membership sales currently underway. The club investment is part of Brunswick-owned Freedom Boat Club's expansion strategy in Europe, which already includes locations in France. “We believe the UK and Europe is a prime market for the growth of Freedom Boat Club,” said Jason Worthy, vice-president of boating services EMEA. “This is the first in what we expect to be multiple new locations in and around the United Kingdom. We are excited to introduce our award-winning Brunswick brands and the Freedom Boat Club model to boaters across the UK.” According to British Marine, UK boat sales rose by almost 10% in 2020, demonstrating that boating in the region continues to grow in popularity. With Freedom Boat Club entering the region, consumers who want to enjoy the water without owning a boat will have more opportunity to do so. Freedom Boat Club of the UK is now Freedom's sixth corporate owned territory, joining Southwest Florida, Southeast Florida, Raleigh, North Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina and Chicago, Illinois in the US.

RACEIX WORKS WITH SPACE AGENCY Irish early-stage marine technology firm, Raceix, is working in conjunction with the European Space Agency (ESA) Space Solutions Centre Ireland on a next-generation sharedpositioning system for the recreational boating sector. On-water testing will run throughout the summer in Ireland and in North America. Following the pilot programme, the technology - Marine-Traffic Awareness platform (M-TAP) - is expected to be rolled out internationally later this year. “At present recreational boaters are poorly supported by situationalawareness technologies,” said Aidan Foley, Raceix CEO. “The current AIS system is far from ideal for this sector due to its slow updating times and requirement for having specific hardware on board, so we firmly believe that our technology delivers a more usable and understandable solution.”

8 Testing of Raceix's technology will take place this summer

He added: “With no roads on the water other boats can appear from anywhere at any time, heading in any direction. Our solution can remove unexpected surprises while also providing a robust and understandable level of situational awareness.”

The platform being developed by Raceix aims to revolutionise the recreational boating sector across the globe by deploying technology to replace outdated methods that are no longer fit for purpose, added Peter Finnegan, ESA Space

Solution Centre Ireland manager. M-TAP is part of a larger Raceix solution, 'BoatingOS'; as a consequence of the upsurge in interest in marine-leisure during the Covid-19 pandemic, the decision was made to fasttrack this element.

COCKWELLS CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding in Cornwall is celebrating its 25th anniversary with its eye on expansion. The company's recent purchase of The South West Shipyard, between Falmouth and Penryn, will enable it to meet demand and build larger vessels up to 65ft. The company is the originator of Duchy Motor Launches which range from 21ft to 60ft and also produces custom-built John Berry, also known as John Primrose, who carried out maintenance works to boats in Devon, has pleaded guilty to a string of sexual offences. The charges - of making indecent images of a child, possession of indecent images of children and voyeurism - relate to offences committed between 2006 and 2014 in Swindon. He had filmed women and girls without their knowledge over a period

brand Hardy Marine, to expand its portfolio further. Cockwells will continue

to offer the original, Hardy designs, with founder and MD, Dave Cockwell and leading hull designer, Andrew Wolstenholme also redefining the Hardy 42 and Hardy 50. The first Hardy 42 to be launched from the Mylor Creek Boatyard will be the company’s first hybrid diesel-electric boat. A digital switching system is incorporated to enable full-remote control for ease of handling.

SEXUAL OFFENCES GUILTY PLEA of a decade. At his house, police discovered a camera hidden in the bathroom ceiling that was linked to a motion sensor device. Berry was also said to have filmed up an underage girl's skirt on a bus. Digital forensics officers also found folders of images or videos relating to five women and girls taken up to a decade before. The court heard there were 150 indecent images in

category A, 100 in category B and more than 2,700 in category C. The files included 83 videos in the most serious category - A which includes depictions of child rape and showed children as young as three. In court, Berry admitted he was 'addicted' to taking videos of unsuspecting people. The offences came to light when a woman complained to police that

he'd tried to pay her son to video her while she slept. The claims led police to the home 36-year-old Berry shared with his mother where they discovered the images and camera. Berry, now of Totnes Road, Paignton, must register as a sex offender and remain subject to a sexual harm prevention order for life. He told the court he had taken courses aimed at halting his interest in underage girls.

BUSINESSMATTERS WILL SILSBY: Technical Officer with the Association of Taxation Technicians

The Super Deduction defined Very simply, the Super Deduction is a new temporary allowance which gives a greater and faster level of tax relief on qualifying expenditure incurred between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2023. For most expenditure on plant and machinery, it works by treating the company as if it had spent an extra 30% on the item and then allowing tax relief on the whole of that uplifted amount in calculating the tax bill for the year of expenditure. So, with a 19% tax rate, the Super Deduction is designed to reduce a company's tax bill by some 24.7% of the actual cost of the qualifying item(s). But the allowance isn't available to all businesses; it will only be available to those which are subject to Corporation Tax. And nor will it be available to a company ceasing activity. The Super Deduction only applies to items which are treated for tax purposes as plant and machinery. For many businesses, this is likely to cover most of their expenditure and simple examples include anything from a laptop to a doubledecker bus. In contrast, a building or structure, or something intangible cannot be plant or machinery and will not be eligible. A special provision in the legislation means that any expenditure incurred as a result of a contract which was entered before 3 March 12 | MAY 2021

on 50% of the actual cost instead of just 6%. Unlike the Super Deduction, this does not increase the value of tax relief over the life of the asset, but it does significantly accelerate the relief.

Credit: Treasury Flickr

The Chancellor's Budget Day announcement of a new style of capital allowance which will allow companies to reduce their taxable profits by 130% of the cost of new equipment has attracted a lot of interest But it's also raised a number of questions.

SUPER DEDUCTION A FINANCIAL MARVEL?

2021 will be ineligible as the expenditure is treated as made before 1 April 2021 regardless of when payment was required. Some items of plant or machinery are specifically excluded from eligibility. Common examples include cars; used and secondhand assets; and plant or machinery which is leased out to another. Practical effects of the Super Deduction Before delving into the effects of the Super Deduction, all businesses are already entitled to an Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) which enables them to get tax relief on the whole of their qualifying expenditure for the year of purchase, up to an annual limit. Until 31 December 2021, the AIA limit is £1m, but is scheduled to reduce to

£200,000 from 1 January 2022. The higher limit means that a company spending £500,000 before 1 April 2021 on plant or machinery will (without the Super Deduction) get a tax reduction at 19% on that amount - so £95,000. If that same level of expenditure was incurred after 31 March 2021 and qualified for the Super Deduction, the tax reduction would instead be £500,000 x 130% which, at 19%, gives a tax reduction of £123,500 - so £28,500 more. At higher levels of qualifying expenditure, the Super Deduction creates a disproportionately greater benefit. A separate Special Rate As already noted, some items of plant and machinery are not eligible for the Super Deduction. This includes all items of capital expenditure which

are treated as 'special rate' assets. These assets include integral features of a building, long life assets, thermal insulation and solar panels. Under the general capital allowance legislation, the annual Writing Down Allowance on these items of plant or machinery is just 6% rather than the normal 18% meaning that these 'special rate' assets are written off more slowly for tax purposes. If a company incurs qualifying expenditure on these types of asset in the two-year period starting on 1 April 2021, they cannot qualify for the 30% value boost explained above, but (provided that the particular assets are not specifically disqualified) the company is entitled to new Special Rate Allowance. This provides tax relief for the year of expenditure

Tax losses Companies can normally carry back losses from one accounting period to the previous accounting period so that the profits of that previous period are reduced. This enables a repayment of Corporation Tax for the previous period. Because of the pandemic, the Chancellor has announced that losses arising in a company's accounting period which ended between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2022 can be carried back for two further years. Such a loss carry-back could enable a company that had depressed profits to still receive early tax relief. It would, however, be important to consider the alternative of carrying the loss forward, particularly if that might result in tax relief at 25% instead of 19%. Lastly, an important consequence of both the 130% Super Deduction and the Special Rate Allowance is that part of the tax reduction will be clawed back if the relevant asset is subsequently sold. In summary With the complexities set down, it's not hard to see that it is essential for any company to take appropriate professional advice in advance to ensure that the Super Deduction or the Special Rate Allowance works as expected.

ELECTRIC NARROWBOAT PROPULSION TRIAL Ortomarine is holding an electric propulsion performance trial for narrowboats, aiming to show that green technology for inland boating is a viable option. During the trial on 29 May, said to be the first in the UK, a variety of all electric and hybrid boats will spend a typical cruising day of eight hours navigating the River Severn and Droitwich Canal. Data gathered using the company's Ortomate system will be analysed to compare performance

such as handling, speed, acceleration, braking and consumption, benchmarked against Here We Go Again, a traditional diesel-powered narrowboat. Taking part in the trial will be three serial hybrids, two parallel hybrids and three diesel-powered narrowboats. Along with comparing the performance of electric propulsion, data will also be gathered on the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil as a fuel with two boats going head-to-head, one using

8 The trial will start at Worcester on the River Severn ending at Droitwich Spa Marina on the Droitwich Canal

conventional red diesel and the other using HVO fuel supplied by Crown Oil. Retro-fitting electric propulsion to dieselpowered craft is difficult and costly and HVO diesel could prove to be the solution. This trial hopes to show that HVO diesel can match the performance of conventional red diesel whilst reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%.

The first phase of work to build a new marina on the Union Canal in Winchburgh, West Lothian has completed with the construction of the marina basin. Development now turns to further landscaping of the area, as well as pontoons, moorings and a facilities building. Local school children joined John Hamilton, the chief executive of Winchburgh Developments, to release water back into the canal. “It was great to see so many community members come and see this next stage in the marina development bringing the Union Canal back into full use,” he said. Winchburgh Marina is the first new marina to open on the Union Canal since 2014 and will eventually include 49 berths as well as bars, restaurants and luxury

canal-side apartments. The new marina comes as the canal approaches its 200th anniversary, having been originally built between 1818 and 1822. Catherine Topley, chief executive of Scottish Canals, said that the new marina demonstrated the commitment to regenerating the country's canal network. “This fantastic development will create new and exciting opportunities for people to live and work on our canals for years to come,” she said.

The Broads Authority has prosecuted a further three boaters for navigation bylaw offences on the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads. The prosecutions were for failing to navigate with care and caution and of breaking the speed limit. The former owner of a blue speedboat with the name/model 'Stingray' (now sold) has been convicted of three offences relating to incidents at Reedham and Norwich on the River Yare in May and July last year. The Magistrates imposed a fine of £330 for each of the three offences (£990) a victim surcharge of £33 was applied, and full costs of £1,045 ordered (total costs of £2068). A 28-day collection order was made. In addition, two boaters were convicted of several counts of failing to navigate with care and caution, and of breaking the speed limit. The offences took place on a white speedboat, at Irstead and Ludham on the River Ant in September last year. The Magistrates imposed fines of £200 for combined offences, a contribution to costs of £200 and a £34

victim surcharge was applied (total costs of £434 each). Again, 28-day collection orders were imposed. Senior ranger for compliance and safety, Jon Hopes worked on preparing these cases for court. “We will continue to raise awareness of the

importance of keeping to speed limits and navigating with care and attention,” he said. “We hope that these cases act as a deterrent to others and we encourage all river users to help keep the National Park a safe and special place for everyone to enjoy.”

And he explained that going above the boating speed limits increases boat wash and damages the river banks through erosion. Wash from speeding vessels can cause damage to moored vessels and capsize smaller craft, such as kayaks and canoes.

ECO AWARENESS DSM Group is encouraging customers to save or return the company's plastic rope reels as part of its focus on sustainability, social responsibility and reducing carbon emissions. The company has created 'Eco-Cycle', a project to bring together initiatives relating to the environment and formed a focus group which discusses ideas with input from employees and customers. “I do believe that sustainability can be easy to market and talk about, but it takes a lot more thinking about to make sure a sustainable product or idea is really sustainable,” explained Nigel Saddington, group partner at DSM which hopes to become a carbonneutral company. “It's no good producing a product that is made using a sustainable source if the final product has a shorter life span, lower performance level, higher price, and also consumes

A REPUTATION FOR QUALITY AND TECHNICAL INNOVATION At Marlow Ropes, their mission for sustainable manufacturing has been taken to the next level with the introduction of our Blue Ocean range made from sustainable materials. With more than half of all of Marlow’s standard products made using either Blue Ocean recycled yarn (which uses waste plastic bottles as feedstock), or Biobased Dyneema (which uses pulp and timber waste as feedstock) in the production process, these sustainable materials have significantly reduced Marlow’s reliance on fossil fuel-based resources. Marlow’s pioneering sustainability mission in the rope-making and Leisure Marine industries began with the launch of the award-winning Blue Ocean Dockline which gained a Special Mention at the 2019 DAME Awards and won the Pittman Innovation Award in 2020. Since then, Marlow’s focus has been on switching over other polyester based products to the Blue Ocean yarn, with further progress made with the launch at the start of 2021 with the all-purpose, best-

selling Blue Ocean Doublebraid. An ideal solution for ecoconscious cruiser racer sailors and boat-owners. Marlow’s unrivalled thirst for innovation means that they are the first rope-maker to introduce a sustainable range of products that don’t compromise on quality. But, it’s not just the products, their Blue Ocean manifesto is an overall company-

wide commitment towards achieving their environmental and sustainable objectives, which allows the Company to stay focused and measure their changes and initiatives. The Blue Ocean trademarked logo is an assurance to customers and end users that Marlow are conducting their operations in an environmentally conscious framework. This includes transport emissions from its suppliers. “Our approach to partnerships starts with wanting to work with like-minded organisations that share our vision and align with our values and goals,” said SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts. “Kuehne+Nagel is the perfect example of this; they are innovators and leaders in their industry.” Kuehne+Nagel will work with SailGP to support the global logistics of its multi-continent race calendar with sustainable shipping methods including alternative fuels. In addition, Kuehne+Nagel will provide visibility on all shipping-related emissions through its Seaexplorer platform, a tool that will enable SailGP to select more efficient transport routes for future seasons. For the shipping emissions that can't be removed or reduced, Kuehne+Nagel will offset the remaining carbon footprint via verified offsets. Sir Russell added: “Our global platform enables us to work together to identify and test innovations that could inspire new sustainability standards for logistics in the events industry and showcase how suppliers can take responsibility for the carbon footprint of their services as well as help us to come closer to our own goal of being fully powered by nature by 2025.”

ECO AWARENESS The market for renewables that disappeared after the 2011 crash is back with a vengeance with boaters more aware of the environment and micro-renewables. “The government is pushing us all to go green, not just the land but the sea as well,” said Teresa Auciello, MD of renewable energy company Marlec. “Back in the 2000s, everyone was planning to kit their boat out with wind turbines and solar panels. “This disappeared after the 2011 crash, however two years' ago, we got the conversation back with people kitting their boats out again.” And she said that wind and solar are always recommended as this will produce maximum power. Some of the most popular products are SunWare Textile solar panels that have a marininsed fabric back with a marine screw allowing the panel to be fixed onto a bimini or awning. Features include high-performance crystalline solar cells and mating Tenax fasteners. SunPower semi-flexible panels are lightweight, easy to install and have

The Windship auxiliary power system with each rig consisting of a three-wing rigid aero foil sail of 36m to 48m in height, designed to provide a significant thrust to propel a ship forward. “We're looking at the technology and taking it into another industry,” explained Windship director David Barrow. “The foils will provide enough power to make a substantial reduction in fuel cost - around 30% and emissions reduction.” A 20th scale model has been built and studies have been carried out with Lloyds using wing computer fluid dynamics and also at Southampton University, both of which confirm the 30% fuel saving. “The most powerful systems use wings,” added David. “The other major

LEISURE MARINE TECHNOLOGY TO BE USED FOR SHIPS advantage we have is that we're able to put three wings on one mast which gives us the ability to have a very low centre of effort compared to single-masted technology.” The company is also looking at solar panel systems which can be placed across the ship's surface, further reducing the power requirement from the engines. A carbon capture system could further remove CO2 to produce an emission free ship. The foils are stowable on deck to aid cargo handling. The company is currently in discussions with shipping companies and investors with the next stage being full size testing.

Protect against corrosion with graphene paint Marchetti Tech has launched a new line of graphene-based sustainable primers and paints to improve performance and durability in the boating industry. Changes in production processes have helped Typhoon International minimise its impact on the environment. Among the changes is the introduction of recycled fabrics and components across Typhoon's new 2021 range of clothing, wetsuits and drysuits. “It is important that we can provide technical and highly functional products for people who are active both on and off the water,” explained Pauline Nolan, UK leisure sales manager for Typhoon International. “At the same time, we are working diligently to minimise Typhoon's impact on the eco-system.” One example is the company's new Tech polo shirts and t-shirts manufactured from recycled materials. In addition, the neoprene that is extensively used in the company's wetsuits, boots, gloves and hoods is Reach compliant, meaning the chemicals used in production are safe for the environment. Reach compliance is also being applied to other products across the Typhoon range including the company's packaging. Tags and bags are now non-plastic while products as diverse as Typhoon's new Mersea Dry Roll Top bag and the company's mask and snorkel sets are sold in re-useable cloth draw string bags. SEABINS ARE PART OF SUSTAINABILITY PLAN Superyacht refit shipyard MB92 Barcelona has collected 570kg of waste - the equivalent of 65,000 33cl plastic bottles - over the past year thanks to two sea bins installed in its facilities. The waste included everything from industrial plastics, bottles, cans, packaging, disposable PPE such as masks, textiles to organic ocean waste. The MB92 Seabin project began in 2019 and forms part of the water quality improvement objective of the shipyard's sustainability plan. It is estimated that, in a year without the global pandemic, the figure could have been as much as 780kg. The sea bins work by moving up and down with waves, collecting waste that passes through. Water is sucked from the

surface using a submersible water pump that is capable of displacing up to 25,000 litres per hour and passes

through a collection bag inside the sea bin itself. Each unit plugs into an electrical outlet that, once

activated, enables the water to be pumped out while retaining the debris within the sea bin bag.

Large scale testing of methanol as a marine fuel will soon begin at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre in Aalborg, Denmark. The project, funded by the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program, brings together Alfa Laval and MAN Energy Solutions with the Danish Technological Institute, Technical University of Denmark and biofuel producer Nordic Green. It will explore the possibility of running four-stroke, 2 MW diesel engine on methanol without modifications or another pilot fuel. “At present, combusting methanol requires a pilot ignition with fuel oil,” explained Lars Skytte Jørgensen, vice president technology development, Alfa Laval Marine Division. “If methanol from renewable sources could be burned directly in standard compression engines, it would offer a shortcut to carbon-neutral shipping." Burning methanol in an unmodified diesel engine requires new engine software which must be developed through engine testing and work with combustion modelling. Early tests of the concept on smaller engines showed promising results leading to a small-scale experiment at Alfa Laval's centre, using a single cylinder of the centre's 2 MW marine engine. The centre is now ready to move on to wider testing and is awaiting a delivery of green methanol produced from waste sources by Nordic Green. Once the fuel arrives, the first task will be determining how to handle the highly volatile liquid at scale before broader tests of methanol in the unmodified engine commence in April. They come with a choice of separate or integrated antenna control unit and a modem powered by ST Engineering iDirect. Intelsat partners have tested extensively over the last year using the new 45cm antenna platforms; the KNS C4 qualified in January 2020, and the Intellian V45C qualified in January 2021. Additionally, sea trials were conducted earlier this year on board the Esvagt Innovator, an emergency response and rescue vessel. “This is a great application,” said Kim Martinsen, chief executive and cofounder of Seasat, a Flex45 beta launch solution partner. “Our compact and lightweight antenna is easy to install, and the flexibility of Intelsat's service allows end customers to quickly and easily dial bandwidth up or down to meet their real-time needs.” 26 | MAY 2021

NEW LOW TACK FURLERS

LESLEY ROBINSON British Marine CEO Helping to drive the diverse range of activities undertaken in the leisure marine industry, British Marine has launched an exciting new initiative to support members looking to obtain funding for business activity. Creating a new, additional membership benefit, the funding portal assists and better informs British Marine members about the funding landscape both generally and to ensure, given the pandemic, that they can take advantage of both UK government and nongovernmental support. The funding guidance offers a step-by-step guide to correctly identify and apply for current funding opportunities, whether that be for research and innovation, training, export, manufacturing, general business, or other activities. Showing the value of the initiative, Robert Parton of Aqueduct Marina has already used British Marine to investigate funding prospects and comments: “Following the excellent British Marine Expo presentation with the Knowledge Transfer Network, Aqueduct Marina has found two collaborative partners with whom we are actively applying for Government Innovation grant funding to help develop a 'green' canal boat.” Making the funding landscape more navigable and accessible than ever before to British Marine members, the Funding Portal is well-timed, as we look to move on from the pandemic and Brexit. 28 | MAY 2021

Bamar has developed a new range of manual foresail furlers that are characterised by a low tack fitting above the deck drum. The Flat Tack Furlers are matched to the company's classic BMG 30, 40 or 50 racing furling foils. They have been designed to be easy to use, lightweight, compact and needing little maintenance. Bamar has developed the shape and construction of the top winding drum after much testing during ocean regattas around the world. As with the company's GFM Crociera series, the operating mechanism works with free-running Torlon ball bearings sitting within a machined, solid aluminium race. The furlers are available from British distributor IMP.

NEW TECHNICAL GEAR FROM NORTH SAILS North Sails has introduced a new range of technical foul weather gear and deck wear that has been designed alongside technical clothing designer Nigel Musto. The clothing comprises four ranges of outerwear, all constructed using GORETEX Pro waterproof and breathable membrane for different types of boating. “For decades, the North Sails team has sailed a lot of miles wearing all sorts of fair and foul weather gear,” said Ken Read, North Sails president. “These new clothing lines incorporate our combined experience with that of one of the most successful technical sailing clothing designers in the world, Nigel Musto.” The outerwear consists of an Ocean range, an Offshore range, and Inshore range and a GP Aero range. To compliment the outer-layers, North Sails

has also launched technical mid-layers, softshells, shirts, trousers, shorts, luggage and accessories. The clothing will be constructed in a new TightWeave face fabric, a smaller weave that has been developed to stop water absorption and penetration. 4DL four-layer durable laminate will replace

Towergate researches its policies Towergate has launched its refreshed marine policies, after spending much of 2020 gathering insight from cover and claims data to identify what customers want from their boating insurance. The company says the research covered all types of craft from a paddleboard, motor cruiser to a narrowboat owner, and showed customers required transparent cover which has the ability to be customised to their specific needs. The new policies are all now on an 'all risk' basis as opposed to previous named perils insurance cover, which Towergate says means customers will have fire, vandalism, damage, theft transit (for boats under 30ft), salvage charges and third-party liability of £5 million as standard cover. In addition to this, for large motorboats, contents cover is also now included as standard due to the popular uptake in people living aboard a boat. On top of the standard cover, customers can customise their policy with 11 separate extensions to meet their boating and lifestyle requirements such as liability limits, full race pack and liveaboard cover. “In the marine insurance market, we have seen many of our peers move to cover which is on an all risk basis in recent years, but never to the lengths we have created,” said Adam Summersby, area director, lifestyle niche. “We believe our new products will support not only new customers, but our existing customers too - as marine specialists, we have designed these new products to provide scalable cover to all boating enthusiasts.”

New induction hob from GN Espace GN Espace has introduced its new Three Zone Built-In Induction Hob, one of a new range of ultra-high spec electric cookers aimed at boat owners looking for the feeling of home. The Three-Zone hob has features designed to make on-board cooking easier. Functions include a 2.5kW boost function, auto-simmer, a dual zone bridge function for large fish-kettle cooking, as well as Melt, Keep Warm and Simmer settings. Electric induction cooking is growing as a popular alternative to gas - there is no need to refill gas bottles or worry about potential leaks and hazards in confined spaces, explained a GN Espace spokesperson. Each zone has been developed to heat up as quickly as a gas ring. The hob is powered from a battery via a DC-AC inverter and is 97% energy efficient. A pot detecting feature heats only the pot and automatically switches off when it is removed. The Three Zone Built-In Induction Hob is designed to complement the new GN Espace built-in OceanChef oven. The hobs are recyclable.

NEW QUICK GYRO COMPLETES THE FAMILY Quick Spa, has launched its latest gyroscopic stabiliser. The X10 is suitable for boats from 35ft to 45ft and completes the Italian company's stabiliser range. “Gyroscopic stabilisers sales in the nautical market are constantly increasing,” said Michele Marzucco, president and CEO of Quick Spa. “For this reason, Quick Spa has been working hard to meet the owners and shipyards' needs, introducing

a high performing model with reduced dimensions and weight. “We are proud of this important result achieved, the X10 model completes our large family now made up of 12 models.” The gyro features a mass revolving around a horizontal axis which the company says results in less mechanical stress, less friction and therefore lower heat output.

The system is naturally dissipated so does not require additional water pumps or seawater inlets. It has a plug and play installation and is suitable for 12V and AC systems. The gyro has a noise level of less than 70 decibels Quick's gyro range goes from the X2 to the X56 which is suitable for boats up to 250 tonnes. 8 The new X10 gyro is suitable for 12V and AC systems

CORETEK BASE PROVIDES EXTRA LAYERING Strong pre-sale demand for Epsilon anchor

Hammond Drysuits' new CoreTek Base layer is designed to be worn next to the skin to provide extra layering for cooler days. The top, made of 100% polyester, is also suitable to be worn on its own on warmer days. Features of the CoreTek Base include a snug fit, 30 | MAY 2021

brushed fabric for maximum comfort and a longer length. “Our three-piece undersuits, CoreTek and CoreTek X, have been well received by customers since their launch in 2018,” said comments Chris Hammond MD of Hammond Drysuits. “Customer feedback has resulted in us reviewing the

layers in order to extend the temperature range they are effective in. As our clients sail and scuba dive around the world, water and air temperatures vary, and this is the layer we have been missing from our product range.” The top is available in unisex sizes small, medium, large, X-large and XXL.

Lewmar's latest anchor is the Epsilon, tested by Lloyds Register and with Super High Holding Power certification. The anchor builds on the design of Lewmar's Delta anchor. It has a winged design consisting of a concaved fluke for optimal resistance and rapid setting. The ballast tipped keel provides holding power; the anchor also has selfrighting geometry and selflaunching characteristics. The Epsilon retains the same shank geometry as the original Delta, ensuring compatibility with the Delta design. “The addition of the Epsilon to Lewmar's extensive anchoring range maintains our

position at the forefront of anchor design,” said Matt Johnston, Lewmar commercial director. “Strong pre-sale demand has shown us, that the Epsilon is exactly what the market has been waiting for. Pre-launch orders are at record levels.” The anchor is available in a range of sizes between 6 - 63kg and in galvanised and stainless steel. It is suitable for both power and sailing yachts from between 20 to 90ft.

pilot cutter frames, to the Southampton Boat Show, where both quickly sold.

Apprenticeship Being unpaid, his father helped him secure an apprenticeship with a builder/joiner and here Dave learnt 'a lot about wood'. Aged 16, he wanted to transfer this knowledge from land to sea and while craning out boats at weekends, Dave asked an owner of a rotten boat if he wanted to pay him to 'put it right'. “I had no idea what to charge but quoted for my time and materials. It ended up being a rebuild and repaint from scratch and six weeks later, I finished a 26ft plywood craft, on time and budget.” Just turning 17, Dave

found that his natural ability to see how things go together was in demand, and with people keen for him to work on their boats, he left his apprenticeship and set up at Bristol docks. “There was no cover, which was hard in the winter, and I had a push bike with a trailer to carry my tools.” Dave lived on his yacht and joined a team building catamaran carbon-fibre multi-hulls. Having upgraded his boat to a Falmouth Quay Punt, Dave soon realised it was unsuitable for the Bristol Channel so sailed it to Falmouth, learnt to drive and got a job building Seastream yachts.

Photo Andrew Wright

During his childhood and teenage years, Dave Cockwell had a welldeserved reputation as the 'kid who could fix stuff'. By age ten, he was handcraning boats out of Bristol docks and at 12, he rebuilt a 'wrecked' yacht, gifted by a family friend. “My father was a plasterer/builder and worked in Bristol docks. He had a converted lifeboat but spent more time renovating it than sailing it.” As a child, although Dave sailed small boats/dinghies and joined the sea cadets, this wasn't enough. As soon as he rebuilt his 17ft yacht, he launched it into the Bristol Channel. “With dad away working in Saudi and mum at home looking after my younger sister, I spent most of my time at the docks helping people with their boats, and whenever people wanted a lift-out, the swing bridge operator would point them in my direction.” Dave left school at 15 and worked as a deckhand on a passenger boat, crossing from Bristol to Flat Holm and Steep Holm, picking up people from Penarth pier. He lived on board and in winter, refurbished the boat.

8 Cockwells builds Duchy motor launches among other craft

32 | MAY 2021

Double-ended Remaining 'for hire' until his mid 20s, these were halcyon days: working on superyachts in Norway during the winter, and in the summer, sailing his newlypurchased 36ft doubledended motor sailor around the south coast and the Scilly Isles, plus partying at festivals in France. In 1996, Dave went back to Bristol, seizing an opportunity to rent a shed in the city's refurbished historic Underfall yard. A year later, he took on an apprentice, secured a bigger shed, rebuilt a 200- tonne slipway out of wood and filled up most of the yard with jobs and boat maintenance contracts for larger vessels and local boats. Employee numbers were now six. By the late 90s, he met his wife, Jo, and they moved to Falmouth, near her family and Dave's former stomping ground. Dave's dream was to build a replica of a Bristol Channel pilot cutter and he combined this with other restoration projects. After being asked to build a replica wooden motor launch, he took this, and the 8 Cockwells has around 110 employees and appears to have overcome any pandemic adversity

Workforce His reputation for quality and fairness spread and orders, and his workforce, grew. By 2010, Dave had moved his boatyard from Falmouth to Mylor, buying the premises from an old friend, Martin Heard. Here, he built a new low-environmental impact HQ and alongside custom boats and Duchy motor launches, produced superyacht tenders, offered re-fit facilities and provided boat storage. With employee numbers around 110 and rising, Cockwells appears to have overcome any pandemic adversity. In September 2020, Cockwells acquired the assets of the Hardy motor yacht brand and in March this year, the South West Shipyard at Ponsharden. Dave's philosophy? “It's all about quality; doing a good job, being fair, honest and making a margin. It's also about channelling profit into your business, knowing your finances and spending within your limitations.” Dave's passion for his business is clear; his believes you should 'want to go to work in the morning, build beautiful things for people and appreciate them'. He's equally keen to concentrate on new design development and problem solving, spend time with his wife and four children, and indulge in some sailing. “In our 25th year, my plan is to continue doing what we do, further improve our range, increase our portfolio and develop the South West Shipyard into a state-of-theart facility.” Not bad for someone who in his early days wanted 'a nice shed'.
