BHG AND WILLOW MARINE ARE SOLD

ELECTRONICS BHG Marine and Willow Marine have been sold to Lymington Marina for an undisclosed sum.

BHG and Willow Marine were owned and run by father and son team David and Paul Martin. David - who has spent 62 years working in the marine industry - will now retire, with Paul staying on as consultant to both businesses.

Both BHG Marine and Willow Marine - trading as BHG Service - will retain all staff and existing operations.

The Lymington BHG site will move from its Bridge Road home in Lymington over the next few months to a new showroom in Bath Road.

“It was a difficult decision to sell the family business,” said Paul. “We are relieved and reassured that we have found another family-owned company, who recognise our expertise and reputation and who will retain the company names and brand and retain our loyal staff.”

Dominic May of Lymington Marina added: “David and Paul Martin have spent a lifetime building up a brilliant

business and we thank them both to entrusting its future to us.

“The BHG and Willow purchases take us into product areas which we don't currently offer to our customers.”

BHG Marine specialises in the sales, service and parts for Yamaha outboards, Jeanneau motor craft, Zodiac inflatables and RIBS. The company also distributes PropGuards and Hurley Davits in Europe and Turboswing and Motortoter and the Linder range of aluminium dinghies and canoes in the UK, employing 13 staff.

Willow Marine services and repairs all brands of outboard motors and small craft, inboard diesel engine servicing and maintenance. The company also distributes Rigiflex boats in the UK and employs eight people.

Lymington Marina is a subsidiary of Berthon.

The sale was facilitated by First Peninsular Marine.

“We will build upon the solid foundations laid over many years and continue to develop the business promoting sustainable future growth,” said Graham.

“With our engineering and business background, we'll pick the very best of certain motorsport discipline and technology and apply it to the boating environment.

“We are setting our sights on becoming a world class high-technology business that manifests itself in a number of different ways.

“In some ways, it will be hardware through the type of tooling employed. In other ways, it will be services and solutions delivered through optimised efficiency. Primarily, it will still be people with knowledge, skill and application.”

MORGAN MARINE BOATYARD IS SOLD Morgan Marine boatyard based in Brightlingsea, Essex, has been sold to father and son team Graham and Oliver Miller.

The business has been owned and run by Ric and Steve Morgan for more than 45 years and has 15 staff.

“Having spent many years building the business to its current standing and responsible for employing over 15 staff as well as serving many loyal customers, we wanted to ensure that any potential new owners were looking to continue our legacy as well as move the business forwards,” said Ric and Steve.

Graham has spent the last 20 years in a senior management position at Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix, Formula One team.

Oliver joined Morgan Marine last year and prior to that spent five years building Mercedes race cars.

Show is very refreshing The RYA Dinghy Show held in association with Yachts & Yachting and Suzuki returned to Alexandra Palace earlier this month for two days of everything dinghy related.

Official figures show that almost 8,500 dinghy enthusiasts gathered to share knowledge, see the latest innovations and buy kit for the forthcoming season.

And these figures also show that the show successfully reached a new audience and generation of sailors with around 25% of attendees aged 15 or under - very refreshing to see.

The youngsters were encouraged no doubt by the many interactive activities laid on by the organisers including a treasure hunt, a trapeze rig where youngsters could have a go at hiking and a sailing simulator.

There was even a beginners’ trail aimed at those new to sailing. It all seems pretty obvious but does make you wonder why other shows can’t put on similar attractions.

Walking around the show there certainly was a very enthusiastic and upbeat atmosphere – in fact the show was buzzing on both days. Cash tills were ringing and the sailors were keen to see and learn more about the latest boats and products on show.

And it’s clear that the boatbuilders are starting to do their bit to encourage a much-needed younger audience into boating.

One – Maverick – says its mission statement is to bring new people to the fantastic world of water sports in any way possible. And their bright green Italian designed and British made craft – that can be used as a dinghy, windsurfer, stand up paddleboard or for stand-up sailing had many people talking – possibly the colour helped…

Maverick director, Mark Knight, told me the design was developed to make it easy for people to get onto the water, whatever their chosen discipline - what a fantastic idea. The craft was actually launched last September at Southampton and has received a lot of interest. One craft with different setups – it can’t get much easier.

Another talking point was Topper International’s new, larger rig. The sail is still in development mode with hopes to have it ready and launched by the summer.

The aim, International Topper Class Association commodore, Bill Brassington told me, is to encourage older children to continue sailing and to stop people thinking of Topper as a just a youth boat.

And maybe even the parents running their children around to various open meetings and championships might even have a go themselves.

On the subject of encouraging people into sailing and making it easy for them, congratulations must go to Royal Torbay Yacht Club that was awarded Club of the Year, recognising its efforts to encourage people into the sport including providing dinghies at a reasonable cost for members to hire.

To sum up the show, I would say it’s how things should be done – kit and boats to buy coupled with the chance to learn and have a go - roll on next year.

Sunseeker has announced a new high-performance day boat, the Hawk 38.

The boat has been developed in conjunction with Italian based Fabio Buzzi Design that has produced the hull and deck.

The new boat is due t o be shipped to the UK in April in time for a summer launch. Finishing will be completed by Lymington

based Supermarine Powerboats.

The craft will be capable of 62 knots ‘out of the box’ with standard twin Mercury R400 outboards mated to Mercury Racing Digital Zero Effort throttles.

vibration and noise transmission to a minimum.

Features include inflatable Hypalon 866 STAB tubes fitted as standard, four FB Design racing seats with shock absorbing mitigation, multiple areas of built-in storage and a choice of paint finishes and upholstery.

The Simrad navigation system includes a 16in Evo 3 touch screen MFD with GPS and wi-fi capability giving access to a CZone DC switching system to allow integrated control of all essential systems including lighting, batteries, pumps and LED navigation lights.

In addition, the Lumishore LED lighting package is controllable from the Simrad screens. The new boat means Sunseeker will now have 13 models in its range.

BURMESE TEAK IS ‘STOLEN GOODS’ SAYS EIA administered by the stateowned Myanmar Timber Enterprise (MTE).

The fraud tainting the Myanmar's nominally legal teak trade is simple - once logging quotas have been acquired, the highest quality grades of teak are supposed to be returned to the government for the MTE to auction off but instead are systematically mis-graded and illegally channelled into private hands.

All Burmese teak in the European market is likely to be illegal, according to a report by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).

The report states that for three decades, the international trade in Burmese teak has been riddled with crime and highlevel corruption, driving conflict and human rights abuses in Myanmar. A twoyear undercover investigation by the Londonbased agency has exposed just how corrupt the trade is.

“The bottom line is that Myanmar's teak trade is effectively a criminal enterprise and all teak exports to Europe are unable to comply with the European Union Timber Regulation,” said Faith Doherty, EIA forests campaigns leader.

Mercury Marine is celebrating its 80th anniversary throughout 2019 with events around the world. In 1939, E. Carl Kiekhaefer bought a bankrupt engine manufacturing plant in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

Now, Mercury Marine has 7,000 global employees.

SYTT APPOINTED BY HENSHAW WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates Sally Helme, group publisher, Cruising World, Sailing World and the NOOD Regattas gave her annual State of the US Sailing Industry presentation at the Miami International Boat Show.

Key observations from the 2019 presentation showed that in 2018 imports represented 28% or 1,471 of the total US market of 5,297 new sailboats. In the 'Heart of The Market - 30ft to 59ft' imports were down 16% to 339 units while domestic production was up 13% to 327 units. Imports now represent 51% of this market segment. 50% of imports over 20ft were multihulls.

Domestic sailboat production enjoyed a modest gain, up 244 units or 7% to 3,826. It is worth noting that 3,382 of these sailboats are under 20ft and 1,499 of them are 11ft or under.

Multihulls represented 25% of overall domestic production in 2018, primarily under 30ft.

Included in the presentation were details of sailboat brokerage sales in 2018 provided by YachtWorld and compiled from member brokerages in SoldBoats.com. These showed total unit brokerage sales were down again to 4,794 units from 5,171 in 2017 with every size range down.

This is the fourth straight year of declines, down 13% overall since 2014.

Bareboat chartering numbers showed that the industry lost 11,110 bareboat sailing charter weeks due to hurricanes. The emergence of 243 powerboats into this market is also attracting attention.

The number of sailboats was down 8% to 3,287.

Superyacht Tenders & Toys has been selected by inflatable supplier Henshaw to handle sales of all its superyacht transom fenders.

The two companies will collaborate on initial concept designs and the team from SYTT will template a transom prior to production to ensure the fenders align to the yacht's contours.

“As superyacht design continues to evolve and owners look for new and stand-out hull designs, transom fenders are becoming more complicated,” said Josh Richardson, SYTT MD. “Templating a yacht in person is key to ensure the fenders perfectly fit each individual transom.”

Paul Heys, co-founder and MD of Hamble-based yacht sales company Key Yachting Ltd, has died at the age of 62.

Paul was on holiday in Martinique with his wife Marie-Claude and came into difficulties while swimming.

Paul was born in Plymouth and trained as a boatbuilder with Marine Projects, moving to the Hamble area in his early twenties.

Over the years Paul sold many brands of yachts, but he is most renowned for fathering the 'J Boats' family in the Solent with hundreds of these race yachts now dominating events such as Cowes Week.

David McLeman, longterm owner of various J Boats paid tribute to Paul: “Paul was a wonderful man, sailor and friend,” he said.

“Paul introduced so many people into our sport. He was always so generous with his time, always going the extra mile to support both experienced sailors and new owners with their boats.

“His passion for racing led to the development of strong class associations including the J/70 and J/109 classes where I had the pleasure of working closely with Paul. His loss will be felt deeply by the global sailing community."

Paul's family and the team at Key Yachting say they have been 'utterly overwhelmed' by the significant volume of messages of love and support they have received.

Paul's legacy is characterised by the continuous stories and anecdotes recounted by everyone who knew him.

Kerry joined MDL in 2000 as an administrator, moving up to head of operations. Over the past 12 months she has been managing Hamble, Southampton and Chichester Harbour Marinas, as well as finding the time to study.

New distribution Ocean Safety has taken on UK distribution of MOB Lifesavers.

The MOB Lifesaver has been developed by Duncan Wells to aid recovery of a casualty from the water. It consists of a 3m length of 3mm dayglo coated ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene rope that incorporates a handle and is attached with a strap hitch knot to a lifting becket in a lifejacket.

Hempel has signed to be title sponsor of the Sailing World Cup Series 2019-2022, as well as the Youth Sailing World Championships 2019.

BRIEFS New concept RS Sailing has introduced an open sailmaker format for its RS21 class racing. And while RS admits historically the open sailmaker format often leads to large increases in the cost of purchasing sails it hopes to address this with a new concept.

RS will provide sailmakers with detailed class rules and build specification for all sails.

Users’ concerns Basic facilities such as clean water, rubbish and portable toilet emptying dominate canal users' concerns according to a recent survey conducted by the Inland Waterways Association. The Gaptracker survey invited responses on topics such as clean water availability, rubbish and portable toilet emptying, showers, electric charging points and recycling facilities.

Basic facilities attracted 84% of all comments with nearly two thirds expressing a desire for more amenities.

NEW BASE FOR ANGLO WELSH WATERWAY HOLIDAYS Anglo Welsh Waterway Holidays is to start offering canal boat hire from Whixall Marina, close to Shropshire's Llangollen Canal.

The Bristol-base hire boat company already offers a choice of 160 boats from 11 boat yards across England and Wales and will offer the new base from April 2019.

Slowdown Beneteau’s global recreational boat market is showing a slowdown with expected growth of +2% compared with +3 to +4% in 2018. This is affected by the inboard motorboat segment’s slowdown – down 3.2% across all hull lengths.

However for the financial year 2018 -2019, the order book as of January 31, 2019 is up +4.1%.

Title sponsor HPi Verification Services is to be the title sponsor for the 2019 edition of British Marine's new trade show to be held in Southampton on March 26 - 27. HPiVS is a notified body which means it issues certificates on behalf of the European Commission for products that need a CE mark in order to access the European market. CANAL REOPENS TO BOAT TRAFFIC The Forth & Clyde Canal is due to reopen to boat traffic this spring - the first time in more than a year.

Engineering works to modernise and upgrade the Twechar and Bonnybridge lift bridges on the canal have started, works that will include designing and installing a new hydraulic system and lifting cylinders, installing a bridge deck levelling and monitoring system as well as maintenance access platforms.

The works have been made possible thanks to £1.625m additional funding from the Scottish Government. They are being carried out by Scottish Canals.

The festival - in its 25th year - is thought to be the UK's largest outdoor event with around 200,000 visitors attending.

Club of the Year Embracing modern facility development has helped Royal Torbay Yacht Club win the 2019 RYA and Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year Award supported

by Gallagher. The club was one of 11 finalists selected by the RYA awards panel and crowned by the public vote. The trophy was presented by British Sailing Team sailor, James Peters.

The club was also awarded the ‘Fantastic Facilities’ recognition.

Marina awards Plymouth Yacht Haven has been awarded Coastal Marina of the Year (over 250 berths) in the Yacht Harbour Association Marina of the Year awards. MDL's Torquay Marina was runner-up. The Coastal Marina of the Year (under 250 berths) award was won by Buckler's Hard Yacht Harbour with Pool Quay Boat Haven runnerup. Inland Marina of the Year was won by Church Minshull Aqueduct Marina with Caen Hill Marina runner-up. The winning marinas are voted for by their berth holders.

Foiling motorboat Beneteau has launched and tested its concept foiling motorboat. The move follows on from the boatbuilders’ Figaro Beneteau 3 production foiling sailing yacht and took nine months for the teams from Groupe Beneteau, working with design partners in France, to conceive, design, develop and build. The boat has a hull length of 9.7m and has been infusion-built using low-emission, weightsaving technology.

VORTEC MARINE EXPANDS WITH NEW BASE Vortec Marine has opened a new office and workshop facility at Swanwick Marina, adding to its existing locations at Gosport and Port Solent.

All three sites offer services from carpenters and riggers through to shipwrights, engineers and a project management team overseeing refit and maintenance work.

The company has also announced the appointment of Richard Burlingham as director who joins Vortec Marine following 11 years as general manager at Universal Marina.

In a further move, Bainbridge has extended the cut-off time for next-day deliveries. Orders placed up to 4.30pm will now be processed and consigned on a next day service, a process that the distributor says has been enabled by an ongoing warehousing streamlining project.

LOCK USAGE IS DOWN 11% Lock usage along the Canal & River Trust's 2,000 miles of waterways was down 11% in 2018 compared to the previous year.

The Trust's Annual Lockage Report for 2018 states lock usage was affected by the long hot summer and water resources shortages, which led to a number of lock restrictions and canal closures.

On canals where there

were no closures or restrictions, there was very little change in lockage and some increases were seen.

Altogether there were 3947,417 lockages recorded across 1586 locks.

Hillmorton Lock two and three on the Oxford Canal was the busiest on the network with 8,621 lockages, followed by New Marton Lock on the Llangollen Canal with 7,866 lockages.

The least number of lockages - 30 - was recorded at Graving one on the Shropshire Union Canal.

The work of volunteer lock keepers, present at 111 registered lock keeper sites with almost 140,000 hours of lock keeping recorded, was also highlighted.

Lockage is defined as lock usage through the filling and emptying of a lock chamber, which in turn allows the movement of water and passage of boats.

GUARANTEEING FUTURE BUSINESS Consumers have many legal rights they can fall back on should they ever feel that they have been wronged writes Adam Bernstein. The most significant piece of legislation for traders to be aware is the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (CRA) as it lists many of the statutory rights attaching to consumers.

Under the Act, consumers have the right to expect, among other things, their goods to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If the goods do not fulfil these standards, consumers can ask for a full refund, a repair or a replacement of the product from the retailer.

But in addition to this statutory right, many retailers and manufacturers extend an additional layer of protection in the form of a guarantee.

NO OBLIGATION Matthew Gough, a partner at law firm Eversheds Sutherland, says that while there is no obligation on retailers or manufacturers to

offer consumer guarantees, once offered they must comply with certain legal requirements.

“Guarantees must be set out in plain and easily understandable language and they must state that the consumer has statutory rights in relation to the goods and that those rights are not affected by the guarantee,” he says.

Additionally, Matthew adds that: “The guarantor must ensure that the contents of the guarantee are clearly set out, including the essential details for making claims under the guarantee, the name and address of the guarantor and the duration and territorial scope of the guarantee.”

If the goods are offered within the UK, the guarantee must be written in English.

DELIVERED Contractually, Matthew says that “the guarantee takes effect at the time the goods are delivered or as an obligation owed by the guarantor with the conditions

set out in the guarantee statement and in any linked advertising.”

Guarantees should not be confused with extended warranties - an arrangement under which a customer pays a fee to receive services and spare parts over a specified period of time. These arrangements legally amount

statutory rights and remedies or contain terms which are otherwise unfair,” he explains.

“When drafting guarantees, traders and manufacturers must achieve minimum compliance with legislation and ensure consumers are not misled into thinking that statutory rights have been removed.”

Guarantees must be set out in plain and easily understandable language and they must state that the consumer has statutory rights in relation to the goods and that those rights are not affected by the guarantee to a separate contract, subject to consumer legislation in the normal way.

As Matthew points out, those giving guarantees must make sure that the level of protection offered under a guarantee ensures at least the same protection as that recognised by law.

COMPLIANCE “The guarantee must not limit or exclude the consumer's

According to Competition and Markets Authority unfair terms guidance, a guarantee which offers more restrictive rights than a consumer has under law may be challenged as unfair and therefore potentially unenforceable.

This would include guarantees which offer lesser protection, either because the benefits are less or because their availability is

made subject to special conditions or restrictions.

Such restrictive wording could mislead consumers into assuming that it represents the full extent of their rights and cause them to refrain from exercising their statutory rights.

LIFESPAN Many manufacturers offer a guarantee for the lifespan and quality of their products.

This guarantee creates a legal obligation between the manufacturer and the customer, even where that manufacturer is not directly selling the goods. However, the retailer who sold the product would still owe the consumer their statutory rights under the contract for the sale of goods.

Concluding, Matthew says that “if a consumer has rights under a guarantee provided by either the manufacturer or the retailer, it is up to the consumer to decide whether to exercise their statutory rights against the retailer or the manufacturer as the provider of the guarantee.”

BREXIT CHERYL HOWES: Owner of Kate Boats

UNCERTAINTY IS CAUSING EVEN MORE DAMAGE Cheryl Howes, owner of Warwick-based narrowboat hire company Kate Boats, a family run firm, is of the view that the UK now needs to leave the EU: “Whichever way I voted, which at this stage is completely irrelevant, the national vote was to leave and as such that is what needs to happen and in some sort of managed way.”

For her, the idea of another vote or crashing out in a manner that will cause huge damage to the economy doesn't bear thinking about.

“The hugely damaging

aspect at this moment is the uncertainty of what is ahead of us.

“Everyone around me has had enough of the whole subject and just want the politicians to sort it out.”

And it's easy to see the reason why - Cheryl comments that 'bookings are currently running at around 15% down on last year, we are up on overseas bookings from non-EU countries, down on bookings from other EU countries and down on UK bookings'.

The effect of this is that Kate Boats has 'halted

our slow and steady expansion that has been going on for years and seen us rise from nine boats to 27 boats over 19 years we are waiting to see what happens next'.

Luckily, she has not seen her costs affected by Brexit, but adds 'at this point we could move into a discussion on the costs of minimum wage increases, erosion of wage differentials and costs of workplace pensions, but that is another subject'.

believes Cheryl. She says that 'the feeling that I get amongst small businesses around me, both in the boating industry and outside it, is that life is not easy'. The view is that 'people generally seem to have put future plans on hold and are waiting to see what happens next'.

Going forward, Cheryl

is of the opinion that Brexit won't hurt the marine sector in the long run. As she explains: “I think that once we have got through whatever happens next things for our industry won't be much different. We have a great product and tourism into the UK and within the UK is unlikely to be impacted hugely.”

Digital Yacht has teamed up with SIMY to create what is believed to be the world's smallest AIS MOB beacon.

The AIS MOB100 Beacon incorporates a 72 channel GPS and AIS SART transmitter.

It measures 115 x 40 x 22mm and weights 95g and is designed for manual activation or can be attached to an automatic inflation lifejacket, automatically activating when the life-vest inflates.

It requires just a 1cm downward movement created by the strap and lifejacket inflation to auto activate and deploy the spring antenna.

When activated, it sends the MOB casualty's current location as an AIS transmission.

Optional devices can also automatically sound an audio alarm to alert the crew and coastguard and monitoring stations can also pick up the signal which is identified using a unique signal as a MOB distress situation.

The AIS range is typically 5-10NM depending upon sea conditions; when activated, the MOB position is sent eight times a minute as a priority AIS SART message. A strobe LED flashes to aid night time recovery. If activated accidentally, the MOB100 can be physically reassembled and reset.

It has a seven-year battery that will operate for at least 24-hours continuously when activated and is waterproof.

CONCEALED FRAME RECEIVES PATENT The new Series 16 concealed frame from Seaglaze is hidden behind the glass to give a bonded-glass appearance, whilst maintaining window integrity.

The product is one of a number of enhancements Seaglaze has developed to improve both the aesthetics on board and make installation easier.

“We've been developing new frames and installation techniques,” said MD Alastair Clayton. “We received the patent for the frame in January. It's available as a fixed window that clamps in so its quicker to fit and doesn't need printing of an inner frame. As a result, its cheaper than the hidden frame.”

MARINE ENVIRONMENT While both of these are available in the domestic and industrial markets, work is still required for them to be suitable for a marine environment says Alastair.

“We carry out a lot of R&D with Pilkington and what we're finding is where there is a niche in specialist glass produced for buildings and supermarkets, it hasn't yet moved into marine,” he said.

“Across the industry there's new technology that's there and inherent risks. We need to work out how to introduce it to the marine industry.”

SUPPLY AND SERVICE IS FOREMOST FOR QUICK Working in close collaboration with customers is just one area where Quick believes it adds value.

The Italian manufacturer of nautical equipment designs and manufactures lighting solutions using the latest styles alongside advancing technology, explained Andrew Sims, Quick UK MD. “Manufacturing in house enables us to control the whole production process, maintaining product quality,” he said. “Supply and service is always foremost.”

The lighting range covers downlighters, courtesy, wall, reading, retractable, underwater lighting and controllers.

“While we have an unprecedented range of lighting, to meet market demands we have always worked closely with our

customers who we view as partners,” said Andrew.

“This involves developing full lighting plans in liaison with the builders' interiors team or external designer and if required, customising fixtures. Where necessary we will develop new product lines to solve a request.”

And Andrew added that the lighting market in the UK is changing, moving away from a price sensitive issue, to instead become a key, technical part of an interior finish.

“For instance, LED recessed anti-glare fixtures that give a much more designed effect are becoming popular." he said.

“These are now developed as our Palladio range, which we continue to add to at a pace.”

Interform Marine will display its MarinePod range of electronic enclosures on Stand A11 at the BM Expo.

Manufactured in the UK at Interform's factory in High Wycombe, MarinePod offers a range of waterproof enclosures for marine electronic equipment.

ASAP FAREHAM CELEBRATES A YEAR ASAP's newest branch in Fareham has celebrated its one-year anniversary since opening.

Being ASAP's first ECP supported depot, the first year has been a learning curve for the business that has traded from the same premises for more than 27 years, but manager Tom Stott says he's been very pleased with the positive feedback received from new and existing customers.

“My first year as branch manager has been very enjoyable,” he said. “Getting to know our local customers and representing ASAP at exhibitions is very rewarding especially when you realise all the hard work is paying off.

Robert Braithwaite, CBE, DL, founder of Sunseeker International, has died aged 75.

He had successfully fought prostate cancer and bowel cancer but lost a battle with Alzhiemers.

Robert began his career servicing outboard engines before completing an engineering course and apprenticeship.

Throughout the sixties, Robert worked at Friar’s Cliff Marine that became Poole Powerboats in 1969.

The company sold various brands of boats including those from American boat builder Owens Cruisers.

However it was when Owens Cruisers decided its craft would no longer be distributed to Europe and the UK operation was to close that Robert saw an opportunity.

EARLY DESIGNS After raising cash, he negotiated a deal to acquire their boat moulds – despite Poole Powerboats never having built any seagoing craft before.

Robert’s early designs were tailored to a handful of customers using revolutionary materials and technology for the time.

The first yacht to launch was the Sovereign 17 in 1971 followed by the Sovereign 20. In 1972, the company exhibited at the Southampton Boat Show where one visitor - Formula One driver Henry Taylor asked for a craft with a full width sunbed.

SUNSEEKER FOUNDER ROBERT BRAITHWAITE DIES instrumental in the move of the London Boat Show to ExCel in 2004.

In 2007 he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, 15 years after being awarded an MBE for Sunseeker’s export efforts.

The CBE was made for services to business and charity in Poole – his personal charity foundation The Autumn Trust was set up for the advancement of health and saving lives, helping people with disabilities and their children.

This failed to put off Robert and his team who set about designing the new boat.

The demands of a growing sports cruiser market soon led to the launch of the Sports 23 and the Daycab 23 and by the late seventies, the company’s yachts were popular throughout the UK and northern Europe.

MEDITERRANEAN MARKET Robert and his brother John, who had by now joined the

business, were keen to expand further and break into the Mediterranean market.

The skills of racing boat and superyacht designer Don Shead were enlisted to create a production cruiser, combining his and the Braithwaites’ vision.

The Offshore 28 was the result, a performance model that quickly sold throughout the south of France, Spain and Germany and launched the company as Sunseeker International.

Robert continued to grow Sunseeker, expanding its shipyards in Poole and creating a wide global distributor network.

JAMES BOND After Sunseeker appeared in four consecutive James Bond films, Robert was asked to appear in a cameo role in the film Quantum of Solace. The scene featured James Bond in a Sunseeker Sovereign 17, one of the company’s first open cockpit speedboats.

Robert stepped down from executive and board responsibility in July 2012 and took on the role of group president saying it was time to take a step back while continuing to help the company in key areas.

He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Metstrade / IBI Boat Builder Awards in 2016. At

the time he stated: “I have dedicated much of my life to this industry and have strived to make Sunseeker the world-renowned luxury brand that it is today.

“As Britain’s biggest boat builder, I am very proud of what Sunseeker International has become over the last 47 years; it is quite an achievement.

“We are continuing to grow worldwide thanks to our investment in new products, shipyard facilities and our people, it is exciting to see what the future will hold.”

A 91.8% stake in Sunseeker was sold to Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group in 2013 for £320m.

“Robert was an inspiration to everyone at Sunseeker and to the wider marine industry, recognised as a boating pioneer, a true visionary and someone who changed the face of boating forever,” said Christian Marti, current Sunseeker CEO. “Robert was not only the company’s founder but the father of the ‘Sunseeker family’ here in Dorset and worldwide through our dealers and clients. He will always live on as the driving force behind our success.”

The funeral will be private followed by a memorial in a few months’ time.

Inmarsat has appointed Peter Broadhurst as its new senior vice president, yachting and passenger, as the mobile satellite communications company continues to expand its presence in the small cruise, superyacht and leisure yachting sectors.

Peter has more than 25 years' experience in the industry and has been involved in the Inmarsat Maritime business since 2014.

He will oversee the ongoing delivery of maritime communications solutions for leisure craft and superyachts through Fleet Xpress and Fleet One. Peter will also continue in his role as senior vice president of safety and security at Inmarsat Maritime.

He said: “I am keen to drive forward the full portfolio of Inmarsat solutions for a variety of leisure yachts, boats and ferries, as well as the speciality cruise sector, at a time when demand for on-board connectivity is growing.�

Dennis began his career in the hospitality and services sector, followed by ten years with General Motors and five years with Ingersoll Rand, developing its sales networks and delivering sustainable growth.

He is also a former commercial director with Morgan Cars. “Fairline Yachts has rightfully earned an enviable position on the world stage, and I look forward to building this reputation further,� he said. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of Fairline's future and I feel confident that my commercial experience as well as my passion for boating will be a real asset to the continued success of this prestigious brand.�

Dennis was born in the Netherlands, where he grew up at the family boating business. This involved moving around the world such as the Far East, USA and Europe.

He did his secondary studies in France and completed a Master of Science and MBA in the US with a focus on international management.
