A boat rental and water experience marketplace has reported record business growth in 2021, achieving 700% year-on-year growth from January to April. GetMyBoat, which is supported by strategic investment partner, Yanmar, is currently reporting an annual run rate in excess of US$158MM, putting the company on track to send more than one million people boating before the end of the year. The Covid-19 pandemic has created a dramatic increase in the number of people taking to the water, and the company expects bookings to double during the busy summer months. To meet demand, GetMyBoat has also brought on thousands of new boat operators and is helping them find new customers and grow their fleets. “There has always been a significant desire for boating

experiences, but last year really amplified the need for customers to get out on the water quickly, easily, and safely,” said Bryan Petro, chief operating officer. “Due to travel limitations and lockdowns that continue in other parts of the world, I'm excited to say we have not yet come close to tapping our full potential. Many global markets are still at least partially closed, and we expect that our business will further increase in the coming months as more locations ease restrictions." GetMyBoat connects renters and boat operators directly through its app and offers boats in more than 9,300 destinations globally.

Volvo Penta acquires majority stake in ZEM Volvo Penta is expanding its capabilities in the electric market by acquiring a majority stake in the marine battery and electric driveline solutions supplier ZEM. ZEM has 12 years of market experience and a strong track record in Norway, said to be the most mature marine e-mobility market in the world. “Marine electromobility has a unique set of requirements,” explained Peter Granqvist, chief technology officer, Volvo Penta. “There are very specific considerations of utmost importance around the installation environment, safety, the use case itself as well as the current lack of charging infrastructure."

Electromobility ZEM's core team has a background in electromobility that dates back to 1993. In 2009, ZEM was founded as an advisor to the maritime and offshore sector to design battery and hybrid solutions and the company now serves the ferry, offshore supply vessel, high-speed passenger ship, lifeboat and aquaculture sectors. ZEM will remain operating under its current brand led by long-term chief executive, Egil Mollestad. ZEM will continue to grow its battery and complete driveline business with plans for the two companies to create complete packages together in the future.

Shattering the glass ceiling

It must have been heart-breaking for Tracey to have to sell Maiden at the end of the race as she couldn’t afford to keep her. And it must have been even more heart-breaking to find her in 2015 in a sorry state. However, never one to accept defeat, Tracy showed her determination again and raised the funds to buy and restore Maiden. Now, through her work as a global ambassador for the empowerment of girls through education, Tracy and her team are highlighting the plight of girls worldwide who don’t have access to education. With the tag line ‘Empower a Girl, Change the World’ The Maiden Factor is raising money for this worthy cause – a basic human right - with Tracy showing just what can be achieved if enough effort and passion are put in. And with a tour around Britain a possibility for later this year, many more of us will be able to see and experience The Maiden Factor first-hand. From having been dubbed a ‘tinful of tarts’ by the legendary Bob Fisher, Tracy and her crew have overcome sexism and adversity and paved the way for many more females to break into the marine and sailing world, something most of us will agree can only be a positive. And if anyone wants to support Tracy and The Maiden Factor further, she’s always on the lookout for sponsorship…

New boating facilities are to be developed at Red Bridge, Ballymahon on the Inny River, Shannon navigation. In a joint collaboration, Waterways Ireland, Fáilte Ireland and Longford County Council will develop the facilities, following the publication of the Shannon Tourism Masterplan. The project is one of a number of new developments that are being advanced and funded through a collaborative and partnership arrangement between Waterways Ireland, Fáilte Ireland

and local authorities. The development will consist of new boating facilities with eight berths, a canoe launch area, car parking and ancillary land-based facilities. Open up access It will expand the capacity for mooring cruise boats along the Shannon and open up access for hire boat users Ballymahon and the eastern shores of Lough Ree. “We manage and maintain some 8,500 metres of jetty space at over 52 locations along the Shannon navigation. Some

locations are extremely popular, and the jetty provision cannot cater for the demand,” said Éanna Rowe, regional manager, Waterways Ireland. “An investment programme in new jetty provision has been developed by Waterways Ireland and a number of new facilities are now being introduced at specific locations with the support of Fáilte Ireland and in the case of the Red Bridge by Longford County Council.”

WORK ON INVERNESS WATERSIDE HUB UNDERWAY A project is underway to create a waterside hub in Inverness with space for employment, hospitality and community facilities. Ground-clearing work is under way for the £5.2 million Carse Hub venture beside the Caledonian Canal at Muirtown Basin, which Chris Breslin, head of regeneration and enterprise for lead investor, Scottish Canals, believes will bring lasting benefits to the city. The two phase project will see two new buildings constructed, firstly The Treehouse, a flexible development with space for offices, workshops and community groups followed by The Boathouse housing a canalside café,

I was privileged to listen to a presentation by the inspiring Tracy Edwards MBE this week, learning more about her project, The Maiden Factor. Tracey and her all-female crew were the first to sail around the world in 1989 – 90 as they took part in the Whitbread Round the World Race, despite the fact that Tracy and her crew were told on numerous occasions they couldn’t do it, However, with bucket loads of determination, the team didn’t break the glass ceiling but shattered it, proving the doubters wrong, as they finished the race in a smaller boat than many of their male counterparts, won two of the legs and came second overall. Tracy says taking part in the race and showing the world what could be achieved was ‘something she had to do’. “We showed how sailing is a level playing field,” she said.

as well as new facilities for boating customers and storage space for local water-based clubs. This major regeneration project will improve access for both Merkinch and South Kessock residents and the wider community, with improvements to towpaths and footpaths and links with the Merkinch Nature Reserve.

Chris Breslin pointed to a successful similar development on the Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow. “Since we began investing in the north Glasgow canal, around 15 years ago, it has drawn in hundreds of millions of pounds of additional investment,” he said. “That starts to change how the whole area is viewed and perceived, giving the whole area an uplift,” he added. Working on the project alongside Scottish Canals are the Scottish Government, Highland Council, NatureScot and Sustrans. All funding, around £3.4 million, is in place for phase one with fundraising for phase two ongoing.

NEWS Maritime expert and prolific author of books on seamanship, Dag Pike, has died on 28 May at the age of 88. Dag's reputation in the maritime world was peerless, his 65 years at sea resulting in expertise in a huge range of disciplines including navigation, powerboat racing, search and rescue and safety at sea. He was perhaps best known for his work on developing RIBs, devising the concept and building an early prototype whilst he was Inspector of Lifeboats for the RNLI in the early 1960s. Rescued at sea himself 12 times, Dag had considerable personal experience of search and rescue operations which he put to use when writing his Royal Ocean Racing Club Manual of Safety and Survival. He was the author of more than 25 papers and 40 books on topics ranging from electronics and navigation to weather forecasting, surveys and safety at sea.

Dag navigated and piloted some of the fastest boats in the world culminating in him winning the World Offshore Powerboat Championship in 1988. He also navigated Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic Challenger on its Blue Ribband

record-breaking fastest Atlantic crossing by powerboat in 1986. Dag was also a regular expert witness, appearing in both civil and criminal courts advising on subjects such as navigation, assessment of conditions and collisions on cases involving including insurance companies, the

Treasury and HM Customs and Excise. Dag was still working at the age of 88, producing copy for Boating Business's sister magazine Maritime Journal and putting the finishing touches to his latest book 'Work and Patrol Boats', due to be published by Mercator Media.

Design consultancy, Optima Projects, has commissioned Cape Horn Engineering to help develop a new range of electrically powered cruising boats with RCD Cat B Offshore rating. The boats' twin electric drives will reduce energy consumption compared to conventional motors, ensuring a full day's cruising at eight knots and a top speed of 14 knots. Capable of extended ranges of more than 100 miles, the boats will be self-sufficient for weeks away using a combination of solar PV charging, small diesel generation or hydrogen fuel cell.

been very flexible in their approach, adapting the scope of work depending on the results of each analysis,” said David Kendall, Optima Projects MD. “This enabled a higher degree of optimisation that would be possible through tank testing with a similar budget,” he said. Cape Horn ran a series of CFD simulations in varying

sea-state conditions and boat speeds to inform best design for the hull and exact position of spray rails. Foil assistance for reducing drag and motion was also investigated. The resulting design is an 11m hull length with 3.7m beam, spacious cockpit, two double cabins, fully equipped galley and optional hard top. It is hoped that the new boats will help create a more sustainable leisure marine industry with a lower cost of ownership and environmental impact.

BRIEFS Wave impact A new powerboat manufactured by Ultimate Marine & HCB will be fitted with Sea Sure’s SHOCK-WBV P series seating. Designed, tested and manufactured in Southampton, the SHOCK-WBV P series units on board the new HCB53 Suenos Sea Dreams use shock absorbers manufactured by FOX Factory to reduce shock caused by wave impact. SHOCK-WBV has three iterations, each coming with the choice of two shock absorber options. The C-series is specifically for commercial vessels, the P-series for pedestals and R-series for RIBs.

Solar addition MDL Marinas has added solar panels to the Saltmarsh Building at its Cobb’s Quay Marina. Earlier installations at MDL’s Hamble Point and Ocean Village marinas have generated nearly 150,000kWh from April 2020 through to February 2021 – the equivalent of planting 1,500 trees per year. Energy from the 100 Solar Edge panels is used on site, with any unused electricity returned to the grid. MDL has further plans for a similar scheme at its Shamrock Quay and Saxon Wharf sites and has also recently launched MDL Fitness, a new range of green gyms where the fitness equipment converts human kinetic energy into electricity.

Following Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding's acquisition of Hardy Marine's assets last year, the company has launched its first Hardy 42. The 31st Hardy 42 is also the first of the Hardy brand of all-weather motor yachts, designed by Andrew Wolstenholme, to incorporate hybrid propulsion and a digital switching system for control and monitoring of the vessel’s systems via the 16in Raymarine displays in the wheelhouse and flybridge helm positions. Cockwells will continue to build the Hardy 42 to its traditional design but the company has also designed two new models - the Hardy 45 and Hardy 53 with detailed specifications due to be launched at this year's Southampton International Boat Show. Original design The new Hardy 45 is based on the classic Hardy 42 hull; it has two ensuite state rooms: one VIP guest suite

NEWS Mylor Yacht Harbour is embarking on its latest project - building a Sunbeam to the specification of the 1920s originals but made of GRP, not wood. The project comes 20 years after the master shipwrights of Mylor Yacht Harbour built a trio of classic wooden Falmouth Sunbeam yachts. The hull of 'Tilly' has been moulded on the Isle of Wight from Alfred Westmacott's original 100-year-old design. “Mylor Yacht Harbour has had a long-term relationship with these beautiful boats - building three wooden ones, fully restoring several others and the ongoing maintenance of many of the original fleet,” says Ollie Graffy, whose project it is to bring her to Cornwall. “When the opportunity arose to get involved with building a modern version that has all the grace and style of

boat that has such great history.” And he explained that the qualities a traditionally built vessel will be maintained, but the boat will benefit from easier maintenance and a lower cost of ownership. The project is aimed at heling to secure the longevity of the class going forward.

PHASE ONE OF NEW MARINA COMPLETED Work is set to begin on the next stage of the new Winchburgh Marina on Scotland's Union Canal after the basin was filled with water, marking the completion of phase one of the development. The marina has a capacity

of around 5,000 cubic metres and when complete will include 20 marina berths together with new leisure and commercial spaces. The second phase will include further landscaping, pontoons, moorings and a facilities' building.

The final development phase will see a further 29 moorings added along the Union Canal to the north of the marina. Once complete, the new marina will offer traditional canal side housing and 20 new berths for residential berthing.

BRIEFS Go ahead Cannes Yachting Festival is set to go ahead in September, with almost 600 boats and 430 exhibitors registered so far. Work is underway regarding health procedures; monitoring and controlled access to the show will be in place depending on the regulatory framework set by the government at the time of the show. Presentation of a health pass could be mandatory for visitors taking part in the event. The festival is due to take place from 7 to 12 September 2021 in Cannes.

AMERICAN CURRENTS New-boat sales remain strong in the USA as the economy bounces back from the abyss, writes David Schmidt. The Biden administration has been at the helm for four-plus months, the US population is seeing ever-higher vaccination numbers, and the economy is steadily rebounding. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association's recently published New Powerboat Registration Report, sales of new powerboats were up 34% in February 2021, compared to this same time period in 2020. NMMA data also shows that new-boat sales have been averaging 31,000 inked deals per month since the summer of 2020. Personal watercraft sales were up 77%, year-on-year, while pontoon, watersport and jet boats also experienced double-digit growth in this same period. While these are big numbers, NMMA also reports that sales were down 21% from January 2021 to February 2021. “New powerboat sales remain elevated coming off of record growth in 2020 and it is likely we'll see new powerboat sales in the range of 2017-2019 levels in 2021,” said Vicky Yu, NMMA's senior director of business intelligence. “Not quite at the record levels of the last year, in some part due to headwinds caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and supply-chain disruptions resulting in a production backlog impacting already lean inventories.” It will be interesting to see if supply-chain concerns trigger price hikes within the marine industry, as have recently been seen in other sectors of the American economy. 6 | JUNE 2021

Marine finance lender, Promarine Finance, has seen a 71% increase in the number of finance deals in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. The company has seen the biggest demand driven by motorboat finance during this time with a 180% increase in the number of motorboat mortgages in Q1 2021. There has also been a 150% year-on-year increase in finance deals for RIBs for the same

This highlights the growth in leisure boating in the UK

How I got into this industry... A Royal Navy career was thwarted by (bad) eyesight. A seasonal job at Seamark Nunn's Chandlery in Suffolk developed into a fulltime role. The business grew significantly being early online adopters. Best advice I’ve ever received... I've been fortunate to work alongside some of the industry's best talent and some great mentors. The advice and philosophy of Andy White (founder of Ctruk Group) always resonates. His advice 'work smarter, not harder' has been particularly propitious with working challenges. One thing the industry needs less of is... Old men. Rather, it needs more young blood and gender diversity, both within the industry and in leisure participation. I've enjoyed working with Maritime UK in piloting the Women in Maritime Charter at work , but my local sailing clubs would definitely benefit from more youth of all genders.

Interview by Alice Driscoll

Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... We are a small team and fortunately not too corporate, so do not suffer from a plethora of buzzwords. I'm glad the English language has words that come in and out of fashion. Best place I’ve been... Whitewater rafting on the Zambezi, Victoria Falls. The rapids names such as 'Devils Toilet Bowl', 'The Washing Machine' and 'Oblivion' to name a few very accurate descriptions, and definitely the best lifejacket testing I've done in my time in the water.

Multi-Tool. I have a garage and two sheds full of tools, but my first go-to is always the multi-tool. Probably the Boy Scout in me still... How I cope with stress... My first stress-level coping mechanism is smiling, which generally instantaneously allows me to have perspective and re-focus. My end of day release is a walk by the river or into the woods. Luckily both are on my doorstep. Of course, in the summer getting on the water helps also.

Favourite meal... Mauritian beef and papaya curry, home-cooked with vegetables from our allotment. This combines my heritage with thoughts of sea, surf, and warmth, with the satisfaction of tasty homegrown veg. It is truly sunshine on a plate.

Something about you that people might be surprised by... I spent time in an African prison, after being falsely accused of being part of a group of diamond-smuggling clergymen, after unfortunately getting caught up in the Congo War in a haywire overlanding trip. No crimes had been committed, and we were looked after very well by our 'hosts'. The details are best discussed over a Guinness when boat shows resume.

One thing I couldn’t live without... My Leatherman Wave

Solar power manufacturer sold Dometic has expanded its position in the mobile solar power market - a strategic priority for the company - with the acquisition of Zamp Solar. This is the fifth acquisition announced by Dometic this year. “Zamp Solar complements our earlier acquisitions in mobile power solutions and brings unique in-house design and manufacturing expertise,” said says Juan Vargues, Dometic president and CEO. “Our strategy for profitable expansion in mobile living is built on a combination of organic and acquisitive growth.” He added: “The market demand for sustainable and effective off-grid mobile power solutions is rapidly increasing as more and more people spend time outdoors using a vehicle or boat as the base.” Zamp Solar products include solar panels, charge controllers, power boxes and various solar kits and make use of recycled contents. In 2020, Zamp Solar's sales were approximately US$14 million with a good operating margin and strong organic sales growth. The company, based in North America, was founded in 2010 and has 50% of its net sales in the service and aftermarket sectors. It has approximately 65 employees.

The RYA is highlighting the need for good safety practices after the Marine Accident Investigation Branch issued its interim report into the collision between a navigation buoy and a RIB in Southampton Water in August 2020 which resulted in the death of 15 year-old Emily Lewis. Investigations are still ongoing into the fatal accident which is thought to be the result of Seadogz' skipper failing to see the buoy in time. Commercial RIB tours and similar are becoming increasingly popular. Most high-speed craft are certified by the MCA but the conduct of operations and safety management are largely self-regulated. Code of practice In 2010, in response to an MAIB investigation report, the 'Passenger Safety on Small Commercial HighSpeed Craft & Experience Rides Voluntary Code of Practice' was first published. Tributes are being paid to sailor, journalist, editor and instructor, John Goode, who died aged 71 on 15 May after a short illness. John helped train thousands of sailors though his Southern Sailing School as well as reaching many more though his books and articles. He was editor of Sailing Today from 2001 to 2007 where he was known as a relentless perfectionist with a fondness for salty language. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said that 'UK Yachting had lost one of its characters' whilst marine surveyor, Ben Sutcliffe-Davies said that John had 'left his footprint all over the industry'. Born in Gloucester, John went to sea at the age of 14, on board the Leander Class Frigate, HMS Arethusa. He became a Merchant Navy navigation officer, before he returned to the UK and began teaching.

TALL SHIP ZEBU A WRECK AFTER IRISH SEA STORMS 8 Tall Ship Zebu grounded on the sea wall in Holyhead

A historic tall ship has been declared a wreck after being battered by a storm in the Irish Sea off Anglesey. Tall Ship Zebu had become grounded on the sea wall in choppy seas off Holyhead on the afternoon of 15 May. She had come into port two days earlier because of unfavourable wind conditions meaning her journey south to Bristol was unsafe. Initial assessments of Zebu showed less damage than feared and hopes were high that the ship could be saved, but further storms dashed those hopes. “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I must announce that Tall Ship Zebu suffered further heavy damage today,” said a statement on 21 May. “Winds from the south up to 70 miles per hour hit Holyhead and jeopardised Zebu's already vulnerable position. “Captain Borrett and the master marine surveyor

were at the scene whereby it soon became apparent that she has suffered further

8 Tall Ship Zebu grounded on the sea wall in Holyhead devastating damage,” said

the statement. The 100 ft Zebu was the world's first historic tall ship to have an electric auxiliary propulsion system, swapping her old engine for an electric flux motor powered by rechargeable batteries. Built in the 1930s, she was used for festivals and training to keep alive the heritage and history of tall ships.

REVOLUTIONARY HULL DESIGN FOR UBC The Ultimate Boat Company (UBC) has launched a new range of high-speed powerboats designed by naval architect, John Moxham. John’s career includes designing military craft and creating the UK's fastest RNLI lifeboat, the E-Class Mark I. He was at

the forefront of using GRP for boats and has worked with brands such as Avon, Ribeye and Scorpion. UBC’s hull technology features hydraulic lift generated by manipulating water flow beneath the craft to create better manoeuvrability, performance and stability and enabling the

helm to maintain a constant visual on the horizon. The hulls are manufactured from DANU, a sustainable composite material which the company is also using on its Paris 2024 Olympic hopeful, the new 'Olympic 32' keelboat. The new range comprises five models from 8.5 to 16 metres.

BRIEFS Clarification The UK government and European Commission have clarified the rules and likely costs involved around recertifying second-hand boats following the UK’s exit from the European Union. Recertification depends on a number of factors and will incur a cost that could be between £500 and £5000, depending on the size and type of the vessel.

Distributor Sustainable cleaning product company Ecoworks Marine has appointed Nautic Sales & Marketing as its Italian distributor.

Ratification The World Sailing Equipment Committee has unanimously ratified RS Sailing’s application for International Class status for the RS21 keelboat. This decision enables the RS21 Class to host a number of international level World Sailing endorsed events including World Championships.

Safety on the water is the number one priority and we are in support of the RYA's 'education rather than legislation' philosophy. That's the message from Chris Feibusch, director of global marketing and communications, Wescom Signal and Rescue UK, manufacturers of Pains Wessex, Aurora and Comet flares. His comments follow the RYA's call for the end of the compulsory carriage of flares by recreational boaters on vessels over a certain size - https://www. boatingbusiness.com/ news101/industry-news/ flare-carriage-is-outdated - made in response to a consultation by the Department for Transport (DfT) on future arrangements for the safe disposal of marine pyrotechnics. “The current arrangement whereby flares can be taken to selected Maritime & Coastguard Agency stations for disposal expires

EDUCATION NOT LEGISLATION 8 There is no alternative to the specific function of pyrotechnic flares says Wescom Signal and Rescue

at the end of the year,” said Chris. “As part of the DfT consultation a number of solutions are being looked at by a consortium of stakeholders that will hopefully make the whole process easier when the current arrangements end. For recreational boaters, there are already some schemes in place through the chandlery network and there a number of amnesties being organised throughout the season.” He added: “It is extremely important that the issue of

disposal is not be confused with the question of whether flares should be carried or not. Disposal has always been a slightly thorny subject, but pyrotechnic flares remain highly effective and critical safety devices that are perfectly safe if used and stored correctly.” “Currently, there is simply no alternative to the specific function or performance of pyrotechnic flares despite advances in electronic flares or other technologies.” He called for an end to

the negative rhetoric around flares and says he will be working with the RYA to ensure that clear, correct and objective information is made available to allow people to make informed choices based on the function and capabilities of all types of safety equipment and based on the type of activity they are engaging in, whether paddle boarding on inland waterways or cruising offshore. Chris concluded: “This is simply a matter of safety and ensuring that people take to the water equipped with right safety gear. “There is a lot of misinformation around flares circulating that we aim to address over the coming weeks with a series of animations to bust some of the 'myths' that exist.”

Futuristic vessel The inaugural UIM World Electric Powerboat Series - E1 - has officially launched its RaceBird powerboat. The futuristic vessel has been cocreated by SeaBird Technologies and Victory Marine following a validation process. The powerboat is inspired by nature and birds flying low over the water and features an outboard motor, enclosed safety canopy and hydrofoil technology, allowing for minimum drag, reduced wake and maximum energy efficiency.

MORE FREQUENT TAX PAYMENTS?

paying tax on a quarterly, or even monthly basis. Any move to more timely tax payments would bring with it several challenges. While VAT is generally paid quarterly, it is a transactional tax which operates and is calculated in a very different way to income and corporation tax where businesses have expenses to consider, as

well as tax and accounting adjustments. Also, paying tax closer to real time could reduce the funds and working capital available to a business in-year and result in cash flow problems. It's not uncommon for businesses to dip into any cash set aside to pay their taxes in order to smooth over periods where little income is coming in, or to meet an unexpected expense. And then there's the administrative burdens associated with requiring taxpayers to calculate their tax and make reports and payments to HMRC on a more regular basis. The government has stressed that no decisions have yet been made and any such changes would be introduced gradually, and not within this Parliament. The consultation is open until 13 July, and responses, request for hard copies and general queries can be sent to timelypayment@hmrc.gov. uk. See GOV.UK under Call for evidence: timely payment.

charge domestic VAT and report their sales below this threshold in their regular domestic VAT return. B2C sellers dispatching goods from a single EU member state to another will no longer be required to register for foreign VAT and complete VAT filings in each member state they sell to. Instead, they should file a quarterly return under a One-Stop-Shop declarative system that covers the whole of the EU alongside their regular domestic VAT return. Non-EU sellers - from, say, the UK - may also use the One-Stop-Shop system and register as a 'non- Union' business

with a tax authority of their choice within the EU (unless they already have a presence in the EU). They would submit quarterly returns under the One-Stop-Shop system (alongside a regular domestic VAT return) in at least one EU member state. Once the low-value consignment stock relief is abolished, for deliveries of €150 or below sellers will only have to charge VAT at the time of the sale via the One-Stop-Shop; no VAT will be due on import. However, they could still choose to have import VAT collected from the customer by the post office or courier.

A new HMRC consultation, 'Call for evidence: timely payment', is exploring whether income tax self-assessment and corporation tax payments could be made closer to real time. Currently, the selfemployed have until 31 January following the end of the tax year to file their return and settle their income tax bill, with many also making payments on account, based on the previous year's tax bill, in January and July. Smaller companies have nine months and one day to pay their corporation tax bill. HMRC is concerned that this time lag between income arising and tax being due can make it difficult to budget for tax payments. Reducing the time lag could benefit the Exchequer for as well as bringing in tax revenues earlier, it could go some way towards reducing the amount of tax which remains unpaid.

The consultation explores the possibility of increasing the frequency and accelerating the timing of tax payments for both income tax self-assessment and corporation tax. There are currently no formal proposals to make any changes; it is very much an early-stage consultation to look at possible options and the issues that could arise.

HMRC believes that, in order to be beneficial to businesses, tax payments should be frequent and based on an up-to-date view of the taxpayer's current position. Quarterly payments? The consultation proposes that this could result in the self-employed and companies calculating and

NEW VAT RULES FROM JULY 2021 E-commerce is on the rise and the pandemic has moved it on somewhat. But with this increased interest comes the need to understand new VAT rules that come into force on 1 July 2021, writes Adam Bernstein.. Based on the EU's VAT e-commerce package, the measures change the rules for international trade, especially for VAT on sales to private individuals (B2C) via distance selling within the EU and for distance sales of goods imported into the EU. The changes seek to remove the barriers to cross-border online sales and will address 12 | JUNE 2021

challenges linked to VAT as it applies to distance sales and the importation of what is termed 'low-value consignment' relief - items below €22 in value. Currently, those selling goods to consumers in other EU member states need to register for VAT in each applicable state when turnover exceeds a particular threshold - this stifles business through administration. At the same time, the VAT exemption for low value imports is being abused and is damaging member states' tax revenues; essentially, suppliers not established in the EU are supplying goods within the bloc, VAT

free, where the goods are below the low value import VAT threshold. This gives an advantage over suppliers of the same items within the EU. Uniform process To correct these anomalies, from 1 July - postponed from 1 January because of Covid - VAT rules are changing and will alter a seller's reporting obligations. With a new and common VAT threshold of €10,000 throughout the EU, the process should be uniform across the bloc. In summary, those selling less than €10,000 per annum to consumers in other member states must

VIMMS is designed to US coast guard spec The Vessel Impact and Motion Monitoring System (VIMMS) from Dyena Systems is designed to monitor crew and vessel levels of shock and vibration during operations in waves and at high speeds. VIMMS includes a helm unit and two remote sensors for measuring accelerations on the vessel structure and at the helmsman's seat. A twin LED display provides simultaneous information on the impacts received by the vessel and crew. Configurable settings allow the operator to set relevant thresholds and real time feedback allows the helmsman to adjust speed or course before limits are exceeded, reducing repeated shock and whole-body vibration exposure to the crew or damaging shock impacts to the vessel and equipment. “VIMMS was developed in collaboration with SHOCKWAVE Seats to the US Coast Guard's specification, providing a system that directly meets their needs,” said James Glover, Dyena Systems MD. “VIMMS is intended to be a stand-alone system, but we can expand the capabilities and link it with our other products if the customer requires additional features.” Other features include a lit indicator if the upper limit is exceeded that requires a manager to reset the unit. Data can be downloaded from VIMMS for further analysis. The IP67 flush mounted helm unit measures only 150mm x 45mm, allowing it to be easily retrofitted to existing vessels. The daylight readable display can be dimmed for night operations. 14 | JUNE 2021

Support from Australia's Queensland state government has contributed to foreign flagged superyachts staying an average of 128 days in 2020. This compares to an average of 73 days in 2019 a 75% increase in the length of stay. The passing of the Special Recreational Vessel Act in December 2019 allows foreign flagged superyachts to charter in Australian waters, that could lead to a further 300% increase of visits over the next three years. “The Queensland state government has supported the industry through their Superyacht Development Strategy,” said David Good CEO of Superyacht Australia. “The state government established a fund that helped Queensland businesses

attend overseas events and for shipyards to meet international compliance standards required for this high level of work.” Private investment He added: “This type of government support has certainly paid off in visitation and encouraged significant private investment in the refit

and maintenance industry in Queensland, which in turn means substantial jobs for marine trades.” Superyacht Australia says the economic impact of the visits was just over AUD$100 million, a 58% increase on 2019's economic impact of AUD$63 million. After Queensland, the highest number of visits

was seen in New South Wales, followed by Western Australia and Victoria. The Northern Territory had the largest size visiting vessel, with a length of 107m M/Y Andromeda. Superyacht Australia believes the increase in foreign flagged vessels visiting will create 11,800 jobs.

LIFT PLATFORM PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCED

Princess gets a lift from Street Crane Luxury yacht builder, Princess Yachts, is using freestanding Goliath cranes from Street Crane Company to produce the new 30 to 40 metre M Class tri-deck yachts. Street Crane, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, is supply three cranes at the South Yard assembly facility in the historic Devonport Dockyard. The main assembly area is serviced by two mirror image Goliath cranes of 16 tonnes safe working load, each spanning 13.75m. They will be joined by 28m span Goliath with single 16 tonne hoist and hook coverage over the whole production area. South Yard is enclosed by a light-weight widespan space frame building with insufficient strength to accommodate overhead cranes and insufficient space for freestanding gantries. Street Crane therefore recommended the floor running Goliaths which have a slim leg design. Street Crane and Princess have a long relationship with cranes from street being used at all Princess manufacturing sites. The company first installed ten cranes at the Coy Pool Factory in 2002 for the building of the V Class sports boats. Princess is not the only luxury yacht builder to use Street Crane. Several other companies have Street Crane cranes on site, as do sports boat builders, ship and submarine builders, naval dockyards, oil rig builders and the marine component industry. 18 | JUNE 2021

Osmotech has announced a partnership with H+B technics. Osmotech has serviced and retro-fitted platform lift systems from H+B technics for several years on a wide range of hull designs. The companies say the relationship has thrived and can now be promoted. “Our clients come to us to improve their vessels and we come up with individual solutions,” said James Coker, Osmotech sales director. “Our relationship is a testament to work we carry out here at Osmotech. Boat owners do not necessarily want to buy new vessels; more and more are making improvements, adding lift systems, stern garages, tender cradles, swim ladder, hydraulic solutions and this is where here at Osmotech we can advise with confidence.” And he said that installing high-low platforms makes

vessels more versatile, allowing clients to launch items such as jet skis off the swim platforms. Recent Osmotech projects include a custom fit high-low platform for a

NEW ELECTRIC DIVISION FOR BESENZONI Besenzoni has added the electric ladder LaScala Elettrica, to its production line-up. The Italian manufacturer has launched a specific production division for its eco-friendly products, BeElectric, having increasingly focused its manufacturing philosophy on this sector. “Respect for the planet and for future generations is also becoming an essential requirement for the entire marine industry,” said a company spokesperson. “This is why Besenzoni is now committing its extensive know-how to reducing the impact of its products on the marine environment, while never straying from the style that has made the brand famous for over 50 years.” Like the electric gangway LaPasserella, LaScala Elettrica does not require a hydraulic power pack, making the system silent and the boat lighter.

International Maritime Security Associates (IMSA), has developed a suite of cyber security software tools and services for the maritime industry. The company has launched the capability to conduct basic shipboard network vulnerability assessments without sending personnel onboard. “This capability is necessary in today's current COVID environment,” explained Corey Ranslem, CEO of IMSA. “We know it isn't always easy, practical or cost eSffective to send people onboard a vessel to conduct a cyber security assessment, so we've developed this amazing remote assessment tool. “Through this tool, our cyber specialists can conduct a remote assessment at about half the cost of sending personnel onboard.” Compliance And he explained that the tool will help with IMO 2021 cyber security compliance along with protecting passengers, crew, and cargo. The tool is part of a larger suite of cyber security tools IMSA has developed to support vessels and maritime facilities with expanding their cyber security defences. Some of these cyber security tools are part of the company's ARMS software platform. Through ARMS, IMSA can monitor a vessel's critical systems and networks remotely in realtime through its security operations centre. JUNE 2021 | 19

Eberspächer water heaters for new narrowboats

OCEAN FOOTPRINT PARTNERS WITH FLOW MARINE

Canal boat specialists have chosen Eberspächer water heaters for installation on board their new narrowboats. Boating Leisure Services and Heyfordfields are just about to complete a bespoke 70ft narrowboat and have chosen an Eberspächer Hydronic II M8 biodiesel heater to work alongside traditional radiators. All of the company's boats use Eberspächer Hydronic heaters. Beacon Park Boats have recently launched a new luxury vessel for hire on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in South Wales. Like the company's existing offering the new Falcon will be fitted with Eberspächer Hydronic heating. Another boat in Brecon's fleet, the Owl, has a second Hydronic system to heat a Jacuzzi on the foredeck. Eberspächer water heaters work independently of the engine and therefore offer the double bonus of pre-heating both the vehicle's passenger compartment and engine. In summer the same technology can be used to provide pre-cooling. Controlled by a digital timer or radio remote control, the heaters are integrated in the cooling water system of the engine. The thermal energy gained is absorbed by the vehicle's own heat exchanger and distributed into the interior as warm air through existing air vents. The engine is warmed up with the residual heat in the cooling water.

Ocean Footprint has partnered with Flow Marine Systems in Florida to assist in developing marine air conditioning solutions having been taken on as sales agent for Flow Marine for the UK, Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australasia. Ocean Footprint has employed Brian Arend based in Fort Lauderdale as global sales and technical support manager to help develop the brand. As part of the partnership and in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ocean Footprint has launched a range of fan coils that have evaporators made entirely from copper. The coils have a slot for the mounting of a UV air sterilisation system with the capability of killing 99.99% of viruses and germs. “A recent study by Southampton University

shows that copper alone has a 93.9% reduction of the virus within five minutes, whereas a stainless-

steel surface can remain infectious for well over an hour,” explained Ocean Footprint's Peter Harrison.

“The Lancet has suggested that the virus can survive up to seven days.” The fan coils are compatible with all other manufacturers' controls and are backwardly compatible, easy to install and developed to offer piece of mind to vessels operating as charters, providing safer environments. Ocean Footprint has a full range of chillers for chilled water systems that can be supplied to class rules as standard and can be built in multiple configurations to fit into tight spaces. Ocean Footprint has offices in Melbourne, Hainan, Hanoi, Rotterdam, Wilton UK, and Fort Lauderdale and can offer worldwide support for Flow Marine products.

NEW HOSE FROM ASAP SUPPLIES ASAP Supplies has introduced a new range of air conditioning and ventilation hose - Seaflow insulated ducting. The range is designed to greatly reduce condensation and heat dispersion. It also offers space saving benefits, unlike traditional air conditioning which contains bulky thick glass wool insulation, making it difficult to work with, explained Natasha Caston, head of marine marketing for the Arleigh Group, ASAP's parent company.

8 Seaflow insulated ducting offers space saving benefits

Seaflow insulated ducting is designed with a polyolefin resin film inner tubing and a cover containing an insulated coating in netted

and closed cell foam polyethylene. The design allows for easier installation and improved performance.

Available sizes from stock are 76mm, 102mm, 127mm and 152mm in 10m coils, with other sizes available on request.

NEW DC POWERED AIR CON Frigomar's range of selfcontained air conditioning units will soon be available in 24V and 48V DC, made possible by the company's inverter drive electronics technology. The ability of Frigomar units to run at a low 200W or less in eco mode, means that running off a DC power source need not involve a high current draw. “This will be of benefit, for example, on a catamaran, where solar panels can be significant in size and power, and the engines can be equipped with modern alternators for more efficient engine powered charging regimes,” explained Rod Boreham of UK distributor Advance Yacht Systems. Four models will available in the 24V and 48V power formats: 7,000 BTU, 10,000 BTU, 12,000 BTU and 16,000 BTU. The units will share the

INCREASED REFURB DEMAND FOR TAYLORS Blakes and Taylors is one of the oldest companies within the marine industry dating back to 1789. The company has not needed to change the range or products in decades, instead it is seeing a rise in older units - some even dating back to the 1940s - being returned for refurbishment. “Sales of the classic heaters and cookers are stronger than ever with new units and spare parts being sold worldwide,” explained Dan Henderson, technical sales manager. “However, another rapidly expanding part of the business is the refurbishment of older units.” He added: “All of the heaters and cookers are manufactured using the same components as they were 50 years' ago so it means that the spares are readily available to refurb an older unit. “Owners are sending them back to us to get them refurbished; they look like

a new unit when they are returned.” The company is starting to use more modern manufacturing methods to add further detail to the heaters and cookers with its newest HURCO CNC able to machine

HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING Energy Solutions has supplied a Technicold air conditioning system to the Dunkirk Little Ship, Llanthony. The steel, 77ft 5in in length vessel was built in 1934 by Camper & Nicholson as a gentleman's yacht for Lord Astor of Hever Castle. She is currently based at Gillingham Marina where she is undergoing a complete restoration. Energy Solutions has provided many of the power electrical products for the restoration from Energy Solutions, including the air con system. Existing spaces “The restoration project of Llanthony delivered the marina a certain set of challenges - the vessel is quite narrow and it was important to keep the updates as authentic as possible - so the improvements needed to be hidden in existing

TECHNICOLD CHOSEN FOR DUNKIRK LITTLE SHIP spaces wherever possible,” explained Paul Holland MD, Energy Solutions. “One of the benefits of the Technicold system is that it is modular, so it could be tailored to fit within the space, therefore delivering brilliant efficiency alongside space saving installation.” Technicold systems are tailored to the larger yacht market with features including electronic temperature control, raw water inlet, a raw water copper-nickel condensing coil, compression isolation mounts, a low-pressure switch and a manual reset high pressure switch.

Three RiteAire Marine (RAM) dehumidifier units have been installed in a Westport 85 motor yacht to improve ventilation onboard. One RAM unit was installed in the attic above the helm station to reduce the amount of air coming into the yacht via the fresh air makeup system's intake. The second RAM unit was installed in a cabinet in the Westport's dining salon, with air vents added in the salon. A utility space under the stairs leading to the forward staterooms was used for the third RAM unit. The project involved designing and installing a custom air ducting system to connects to the Westport's own ducts. Dry air The combined system now routes RAM-generated dry air throughout the yacht's interior. The RAM system works by drawing moist air in through an optimum point in the boat, lowering the humidity by 30% per pass. Dry air is then distributed around a vessel via ductwork which then mixes with moist air and recirculates back to the dehumidifier unit. The cycle repeats automatically removing humidity, moisture, VOCs, odour, and mould spores from the yacht air until the set point on the humidistat is reached.

PROFILE

DARREN ROWLANDS CEO and founder of Sonihull

8 Darren Rowlands away from the boardroom

These days Darren Rowlands is more likely to be spotted in a ship owner's board room than on a boat, but he is working to redress that balance. At 55, Darren has already had three successful and very varied careers. Darren followed his father into the military at an early age then went on to a job in the West Midlands Police where he was a senior detective in the force's Criminal Investigation Department. Darren recognises these roles as being key to the development of the disciplined business skills that he has used since. “Military and police service both teach the essence of learning. Namely, reacting to a situation and adapting your plan to achieve your goal. These skills are transferrable and can help in a surprisingly broad range of business situations.” On leaving the police, Darren set up a construction firm that specialised in highend building projects, which soon gained a reputation for creating bespoke, luxury homes for the bourgeoning professional athlete clients of the Midlands and Warwickshire. It is during this period in the early 2000s that Darren joined a fellow entrepreneur and founded NRG Marine, to develop and manufacture a novel device that used the power of ultrasound to keep weeds and barnacles off leisure boats. Hardest market “Looking back at the early days of the company, when we were simply looking for an environmentally sustainable way preventing bio-fouling in the leisure boating sector, we really did choose the hardest possible market to establish 26 | JUNE 2021

“As vessel size increased, our systems were being used on aluminium and steel structures where substrate densities are much more consistent and our long-term installs were performing even better than in GRP installations.” In the last seven years, Sonihull has become a go-to solution for ship owners looking to protect their ships' niche areas from marine bio-fouling. Important areas in terms of hydrodynamics and vessel efficiency, like bulbous bows, box coolers and propellers can all be protected from marine bio-fouling with Sonihull's technology. As for the future, Darren is sure that it is green. “We are now selling our Sonihull ECO brand into the leisure boating sector.

ourselves in and prove efficacy. Our technology requires a solid uniform material to support good transmission of ultrasound. You soon discover that GRP, the most common material used in leisure boats, is probably the most difficult material to achieve this with.” “Boat manufacturing techniques are improving all the time, but no two leisure boats, even series builds, are ever exactly the same - just ask any good surveyor. The quality of lay-up and the microscopic consistency of material can vary significantly from boat to boat.” Six years of R&D later, the company went to market with its Sonihull range of products, designed to keep weeds and hard fouling off boats without toxic chemicals or poisonous biocides. “It was a steep learning-curve but, actually, I think the challenges

presented by small GRP structures has given our product a real edge as far as product development is concerned.” Game-changer With the challenges of GRP installations solved, the company has become a leading ultrasonic antifouling manufacturer, creating a high-tech HQ in Coventry and establishing satellite offices on three continents.

By 2010, results from the leisure boating sector soon spread to larger vessels and superyachts, with more complex systems. “It became evident that the leisure boating sector was part of a much bigger picture,” remembers Darren. “What started as a desire to maintain performance and reduce maintenance costs in leisure craft, has mushroomed into a gamechanger in a variety of industry sectors.”

Transitioning “Like all sectors where fossil fuels are used, the leisure boating industry is transitioning to a lowcarbon future. As new fuels, power storage and delivery systems are developed and vie to become financially viable, the fundamentals of marine bio-fouling will remain. Weeds and molluscs will colonise surfaces and make them more difficult to move through the water. This will never change.” “Preventing fouling on any vessel surface in contact with water - hull and propellers in particular - makes the single biggest contribution to lifecycle vessel efficiency, fuel consumption and carbon footprint. Regardless of if you're running a 19ft speed boat or a half-million tonne tanker.” 8 Darren Rowlands after a hot install in a superyacht engine room
