PRINCESS YACHTS TO BE SOLD?
News
Lessons learnt Production expands BoatLife sponsor Death investigation pages 1-9
Seawork Preview Princess Yachts could be put up for sale with reports stating asset managers at Macquarie have been hired by the boatbuilder’s owners to find a buyer for the company. The news follows a number of valuable yachts worldwide being seized by governments around the world as part of sanctions against Russian owners. In a statement, Princess said it has intensively invested to renew and grow its product range and its shareholders are now considering starting discussions with potential investors to provide financial support for its further growth plans. “Princess is now firmly Britain’s largest luxury boat builder, and the demand for Princess models has never been stronger with retail sales exceeding 300 boats a year and a near $1 billion forward order book stretching well into 2024,” said the statement. The statement said the boatbuilder is at full capacity with

a primary focus on expanding facilities and employment to respond to the unprecedented level of demand. As part of its growth plans, the boatbuilder wants to double the capacity of its South Yard facility to increase its product offering. L Catterton and its predecessor entity has backed the business since 2008. During the pandemic, Princess negotiated a cash injection from its controlling shareholder as well as a refinancing of its debt. The boatbuilder saw a difficult 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic with turnover reduced to £244m during 2020 from its 2019 turnover of £314. In November 2021, Princess announced it was looking to expand production capacity following the rise in demand for its boats.

20% more to try boating A new sustainable product showcase area is just one of the enhancements planned for this year’s Southampton International Boat Show. The designated area will enable exhibitors to show and promote their eco-friendly products in one central place in the show. The sustainable theme continues the push on sustainability from show organisers, British Marine (BM) with 2022 being the fourth year of its environmental charter which aims to minimise the impact of the show on the environment. The show – taking place a week later than usual – will
have a layout similar to that of 2021, with the entrance again at Westquay, leading to an enlarged watersports and dinghy zone. Other initiatives include plans to get an additional 20% of people on the water. “We’re going to do this by providing more means to get people out onto the water,” explained BM CEO, Lesley Robinson. “Last year people could only turn up on the day which is not practical for some families. We’d like to be able to release some spaces and allow people to book in advance.” Early bird ticket sales for the show have now closed, with more than double sold compared to 2019 – pre Covid.

PADDLEBOARDERS DEATHS LESSONS LEARNED The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is hopeful that lessons learnt after the tragic death of four paddleboarders will be in place before the UK holiday season starts. The branch has launched its investigation into the incident in October last year when the paddleboarders died whilst attempting to cross a weir at Haverfordwest on the River Cleddau in Wales. “The sheer enormity of this tragedy selected it for attention and, inevitably, lots of safety lessons emerged as the layers were peeled away,” said Captain Andrew Moll OBE, Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents in the MAIB’s 2021 annual report. “It will be a few months before the report is published, but engagement with stakeholders has so far been excellent and I am hopeful that many safety improvements will be in place before the main UK holiday season.” Recommendations in 2021 The MAIB made 35 recommendations to 23 separate bodies in 2021, of which 77.1% were accepted, although some are yet to be implemented. The Royal Yachting Association and the Professional Yachting Association have issued safety lessons learnt to owners and operators in the commercial motor yacht industry sector after a motor yacht collided with a moored yacht near Cannes, France with the loss of one life. Issues found included unsafe navigation and recreational drug use by the crew. Boat owners were urged to install and maintain carbon monoxide monitors after two friends died on board the motor cruiser,

Diversion, whilst moored on the River Ouse in York in December 2019. A safety bulletin was published but no further recommendations were made. As a result of the investigation into the death of a 15 year old girl on board the RIB, Seadogz, in Southampton Water in August 2020, all UK operators of high speed commercial recreational craft were urged to review their risk assessments and ensure they complied with the voluntary code of practice for such craft.

The MAIB reports a positive response to their recommendations and is confident appropriate action has been undertaken. Finally, Padstow Harbour Commissioners and Wadebridge Boating Club were advised to make changes to navigation aids and documentation after a motor cruiser capsized on a doom bar in Camel Estuary, Cornwall with the loss of one life.
95 YEARS FOR FOX’s The Suffolk boatyard is celebrating 95 years in business. Fox’s Marina & Boatyard started out in the 1920s when Charlie Fox began making sailing dinghies from a small shed on the banks of the River Orwell. Since then, the Ipswich based company has established itself as a leading yacht refit and repair facility, with a 15-acre boatyard which offers complete in-house services including skilled engineers and craftsmen, boat handlers, riggers, electricians and fabricators. The yard has two travel lifts, rated to 70T and the
latest production and workshop facilities. It offers bespoke refit projects for sailing and motor yachts up to 25 LOA. Previous projects have ranged from a refit of HRH The Queen’s, jubilee rowbarge, Gloriana, to state-of-the-art carbon racing machines. Fox’s is a long-standing partner of Oyster Yachts, providing commissioning, rigging and refit of new and pre-owned Oysters. Many of the company’s staff are long-serving employees, including Ralph Catchpole, service manager, who is also celebrating his 50th anniversary at the company this year.

This month saw some grim figures emerging with regards to the UK’s economy. Wages for the period from February to April 2022 fell in real terms compared to the same period in 2021, leaving people with less money in their wallets. And then there’s the issue of fuel costs jumping dramatically, alongside food and energy costs also rising. It all paints an unattractive picture when it comes to the next few months and the signs are already pointing towards the leisure marine sector slowing down. The industry has enjoyed historic growth over the last couple of years with new boat owners coming into the sector during the pandemic and spending their money on refurbishing their craft. Everyone knew the boom times couldn’t last forever and there would inevitably be a slowdown and a reset, but these predictions didn’t take into account the additional factors the UK is now facing with the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia playing their part. Speculation is that this may be the reason the UK’s largest boatbuilder, Princess Yachts, could be put up for sale. The boatbuilder says it is at full capacity and wants to expand its production capacity and is considering starting discussions with potential investors to further its growth plans, but it’s still an unsettling time for the many suppliers whose equipment goes onto the luxury yachts. Staff vacancy rates remain high with employers struggling to recruit across all areas. Supply chain issues and price rises also continue to dominate – two of the factors blamed for the cancellation of this year’s Scotland’s Boat Show. Organisers say increasing infrastructure costs, a critical shortage of boats available for sale and supply issues are to blame for the show not taking place – a decision that has left exhibitors feeling disappointed and let down. For them, having a place to show their wares is critical. On a brighter note, other boat shows and exhibitions are continuing to take place, with everyone I’ve spoken to eager to continue getting out and about to meet their customers. Regional and niche shows continue to grow in popularity with marina companies continuing to expand their offering. And manufacturers are continuing to innovate and develop new products and services – with sustainability at the forefront. As I write, Seawork, Europe’s largest commercial trade show, is around the corner with a raft of new products due to be shown. This will be the first time the physical show has taken place after the Covid pandemic, and the industry is showing it’s keen to get together again. It remains to be seen how much of a reset there will be, but one thing is for certain though; we know that the marine industry is resilient and adaptable and will inevitably make its way through the current predicaments.

BOATBUILDING COLLEGE TO CLOSE International Boatbuilding Training College Portsmouth is to close. The college opened in 2015 and has trained more than 100 students in the art of boatbuilding, with many going on to have careers in boatbuilding, boat restoration, and allied industries. In a statement, the college said the decision to close was due to falling student numbers and rising costs that had made it too difficult to continue. “The decision to close has been a very difficult one to make and has not been taken lightly,” said the College. “We understand that this will be upsetting news for many who hoped to study with us in future years.” Current students will graduate as planned but no further students will be enrolled and the College will close completely in March 2023.
The statement continued: “We are immensely grateful to Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust, who rescued the College when it fell into financial difficulties in 2017. “They have raised funds, invested in our team and provided practical support throughout the
last five years. We wish to thank them and our amazing staff for all the hard work and dedication to traditional wooden boatbuilding that they have demonstrated.” The College’s base, Boathouse 4, will remain open as a hub

A stag party on the Droitwich Canal ended in chaos as one boat sank and another crashed. River Canal Rescue was called upon to carry out a salvage operation after the canal was closed for several hours. The stag party had hired three boats from rental company ABC Boat Hire but after an alleged drinking session on the first day, one boat was left stranded in a lock at a 45-degree angle and taking on water after those aboard are thought to have fallen asleep.
It is thought that the group tried to pass through the lock but were unable to get out through either being in the correct state to be operating the gates or not being aware of how to operate them. Once in the lock the water around the boat began to drain, causing one end to be caught on the cill and the other to descend, leaving it stuck at a 45-degree angle, a RCR spokesperson said. As a result of the blockage, the water levels in the canal rose and several nearby roads were flooded. Another of the hired boats is believed to have been involved in a collision with a privately owned boat. The police have confirmed they are not investigating. ABC Boat Hire said a full handover had been carried out before the group set off.

How I got into this industry... My father Nick started Swallow when I was still at school. I always had a keen interest, working for the business in the holidays and for a year out between university and a “proper job”. I managed three years in said job, before quitting to work for Tony Castro for a year, then finally biting the bullet and joining Swallow full time, as Dad wanted to semi retire. Best advice I’ve ever received... Hold your breath when picking up dog mess.

One thing the industry needs less of is... Ultra-conservative customers. Boat builders big and small don’t innovate enough, in large part because they are wisely afraid of the boat buying public and their scepticism of anything new. Only a real boat geek could tell a Princess from a Sunseeker, or a Bavaria from a Beneteau, and I think the waterfront is a more boring place as a result. Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... My kids use the word ’like’ in every other sentence. Does that count?
Best place I’ve been... Some of our local beaches here in West Wales. Don't worry about... Things you can’t do anything about right now Favourite meal...Pizza One thing I couldn’t live without...Pizza. Oh yeah, and my family How I cope with stress... Safety company to expand factory Spinlock is to expand its production facility in Cowes, Isle of Wight, by 40%. The additional space alongside the existing production facility will allow the company to source and hold more component stock, add in-house processes with new machinery and grow its finished product output. “Spinlock has a strong record for investing across all areas of the business,” explained CEO Chris Hill. “This action will help us meet this significant growth in demand from these new markets such as watersports, fishing and commercial marine as well as with new countries.” And he explained how Spinlock has been growing over the last 15 years in both its control and protect product categories, with exports contributing more than 85% of sales. The design and manufacturing company has been searching for additional space for some time and says the area next door to its existing factory is the ideal solution. Chris added: “Over the course of the last 12 months, with a steady increase in our production staff and coupled with investment in new machinery and tools has allowed us to maintain good lead times, improve efficiency and where possible counter rising production costs.” In 2019, the company doubled the size of its base with the purchase of Cowes police station. Redevelopment will begin this summer with the opening of a new design, sales and marketing studio.

MOTOR CRUISER DEATH INVESTIGATION
Photo: Norfolk Constabulary
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has warned of the dangers of a lack of experience piloting large motor cruisers after a woman lost her life on the Norfolk Broads. In August 2020, a member of a family group on board the motor cruiser Diamond Emblem 1 fell overboard when the boat made contact with the embankment wall opposite the Great Yarmouth Yacht Station. She became entangled in rope and the propeller, suffered multiple injuries and drowned. The MAIB identified a number of key factors contributing to the tragic accident, notably a lack of adequate guardrail, an incorrectly set helm position changeover level, a lack of proficiency in understanding dual helm controls and inadequate documentation. “Large motor cruisers with sophisticated controls are becoming increasingly common and are often driven by members of the public who have limited
or no proficiency in boat handling,” said Andrew Moll, chief inspector of marine accidents. “It is imperative that complex multi helm controls incorporate appropriate technical features and indications to minimise the likelihood of an inadvertent loss of control. Adequate protection around exposed deck areas is equally important in ensuring that no one falls into the water.
8 Diamond Emblem 1
“Furthermore, handovers, including in-water demonstrations, and hire boat documentation need to be complete and rigorous in order to ensure that hirers have sufficient proficiency to safely handle the vessel in their charge.” An urgent recommendation has been made to the Association of Inland Navigation Authorities to strengthen
requirements around MOB prevention, handovers and engine control systems within the Hire Boat Code. A number of recommendations have been made to the Broads Authority to review its licensing provisions and retain records demonstrating compliance with the Recreational Craft Directive. The owner of Diamond Emblem 1 has been urged to revise its handover procedures, provide appropriate documentation to hirers, assess the risks around MOB incidents and dual helm controls and ensure that safety critical controls are easily identifiable. The Boat Safety Scheme has also been recommended to review its requirements for hire boats with multiple helm positions.

BUSINESSMATTERS ADAM BERNSTEIN: Freelance Financial Journalist
In a time of rising cost individuals are especially keen to make purchases as affordable as possible, writes Adam Bernstein. Cheques are history and cash is declining leaving debit and credit cards to take up the slack. The problem is that the former card requires funds in an account to make a purchase and the latter usually offers up to 56 days to pay - and requires a credit check. But there is an alternative that the sector needs to consider, and it’s known as ‘buy now pay later’ – BNPL. An unregulated instalment payment option, invariably with no hard credit search, it seeks to make products more affordable with interest and charge free purchases. BNPL has enjoyed explosive growth in recent years. As The Guardian highlighted last October (2021), UK consumers spent more than £4bn using BNPL and an estimated 7.7m Britons have balances that average £538 for each borrower. Labelled ‘the future of millennial finance’, it’s very popular with the under 30’s and those on tight budgets; it’s estimated that by 2026 this form of finance could be worth £40bn a year. There are many providers that include Klarna, Clearpay, Laybuy and PayPal. Retailers will, it appears – noted The Guardian – “happily pay lenders generous commission in return for those higher sales. [An] investor said double-digit commission rates were not uncommon in the industry. For lenders, handling payments has shifted from a cost centre to a profit centre.” But BNPL isn’t without its problems. There’s a growing

BNPL – AN ACRONYM FOR SUCCESS?
concern in official circles that the unregulated nature of BNPL is causing problems for many. Some are racking up BNPL debts that they cannot afford; those failing to keep up with payment are now accumulating charges or, in some cases, seeing their credit file impacted with loans or mortgages being denied following debt collection action. Notably, mid-February (2022), TransUnion said that from Summer 2022, BNPL transactions will start to appear on credit files. The move will record missed payments and conversely, help those with ‘thin’ credit files build up a credit profile as they make consistent payments. But problems aside, BNPL has the potential to be a very valuable tool for firms looking to enhance their popularity among the buying public. The benefits of BNPL It’s important to remember that BNPL seeks to promote a frictionless buying experience for users; the
more ‘stop’ points that there are in the buying process, the greater the likelihood of a shopping basket being abandoned. For retailers, BNPL offers a way of selling more goods while being paid up front – all with protection from repayment risk and fraud. It opens doors to more people, especially to those that do not possess a credit card. BNPL is very convenient way to access financing; there are no separate application forms, no application fees, and minimal additional processing time, and most providers have simple-tounderstand repayment plans and terms; customers can buy with ease in just a few clicks after first registration. And as is obvious, the ability to spread cost – especially if interest free – is a wonderful sales conversion tool which makes customers more likely to make a purchase, especially a large one, if they can pay over time; it’s the reason why interest free credit appeared a
few decades ago. But in contrast to that, as before, BNPL carries no hard credit check. In practical terms, the consumer shops as normal. But when they get to an online checkout, alongside traditional payment options like credit/debit card and PayPal, they’ll also see a ‘Pay with [BNPL provider]’ button. A quick eligibility check is run, often in the form of a surface inspection of the shopper’s credit history, and the BNPL provider will either approve or reject the customer. Alternatively, for instore purchases, some BNPL providers offer a digital payment card for a user’s smartphone. Choosing a BNPL provider The question for retailers, then, if they want to offer this form of finance, is which BNPL provider to choose? The answer to that will depend on what is sold, its price, and the seller’s customer base. BNPL providers, like banks, offer different products with different
repayment periods from weeks and months to years. Those selling higher value goods will do better with a provider that offers payments over six or more months. Just as customers carry different repayment risks and therefore different credit histories, so some BNPL providers operate minimum and maximum credit limits. This means, by definition, seeking to tie up with a provider that will offer customers enough credit for a purchase to be made. And integration with ecommerce systems isn’t an issue either. The two biggest operators, Clearpay and Klarna, offer integration and a bespoke service if necessary. To conclude To an extent, anything that helps firms generate more revenue is a good thing. BNPL is going to see regulation in time. However, for the moment, it is an option that independents cannot not afford to ignore; rivals haven’t.

NEW LIFESAVING EQUIPMENT AT SEAWORK MARKETING KATE MOSS The Knot Agency The cost-of-living is rising at pace and running a business is nerve-wracking. People are tightening their belts with reduced disposable income. However, there is an opportunity to become stronger and defy the market. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking. 1) Re-evaluate customer segmentations – understand their new financial positions. 2) Plan – what is realistically achievable during this turbulent period? 3) Keep communicating – don’t go quiet. 4) Customers don’t like price rises. Consider putting together product bundles or offers so customers feel they are getting value for money, whilst enabling you to recoup your costs. 5) Monitor the internet. Keep an eye on market prices to make sure you stay current. 6) If you sell online, consider shipping costs as these often sway a customer’s purchase. 7) If selling b2b, consider consignment stocks. Maintaining brand presence when retailers may be looking to reduce stocks will give greater exposure on the shelves and lead to higher purchases. 8) Rather than reducing your marketing activity such as by cutting print advertising, look to reduce wastage and become more efficient – you still need to think about the future of the brand. Cutting spend now is likely to reduce brand strength in the future. Think creatively in these challenging times and build your business so potential customers embrace your brand now and forever.

HISTORIC BOAT TENDER WIN Landau Marine has won a tender to build a replica of a 1916 Coastal Motor Boat (CMB). The tender - issued by Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust – is for CMB 4, one of 12 40ft boats that were originally ordered by the Admiralty from the boatyard of John I. Thornycroft & Co on the River Thames in January 1916 with the boats being delivered eight months later having been built under great secrecy with trials carried out at night. “We literally cannot wait to get out teeth stuck into the project in late summer,” said Landau MD, Ben Metcalf. “It really is the film never made… (so far).” He added: “MBs were designed as a torpedo boat that could manoeuvre at high speeds in shallow waters. “They were 40ft in length (44ft including torpedo rails) with an 8.5ft beam. They were powered by a single 250BHP Thornycroft V12 petrol engine capable of reaching a top speed of 35 knots.”
8 Calypso Instruments sensors will be among the products on show by MCI at Seawork
The boats carried a Lewis machine gun and a single 18in torpedo in a trough aft of the cockpit with the boat’s design allowing it to be steered clear of the torpedo’s tracks if both the boat and the torpedo travelled at the same speed. CMB 4 was initially based at Dunkirk, operating as part of the Dover Patrol, and took part in raids on Ostend and Zeebrugge. In 1919 CMB 4, commanded by Lieutenant
Augustus Agar, was used on Secret Service operations in the Baltic. “CMB 4 is of national significance as a rare survivor of an important wartime innovation. “Her hydroplane design with its skimming dish hull and sleek lines enabled her to pass across the surface of the water at high speeds, while still having good seagoing qualities,” explained Ben. “This enabled her to

be used as an attack vessel capable of making a fast get-away. “Once finished the CMB Landau are building will be the only working vessel of her type in the world and a little bit of important maritime history will have been brought back to life.” 8 Landau Marine will be on stand E51 at Seawork.
CONSISTENT ONBOARD CONNECTION Poynting’s latest WaveHunter antenna will be on show at Seawork 2022. The new antenna is a development based on Poynting’s experience garnered from its current line-up, the evolution in cellular connectivity and the feedback received from the marine market, explained Andy Banting, commercial marine sales manager for UK distributor C A Clase. “The Poynting WaveHunter is the best performing 5G antenna dome ever designed to be installed on vessels,” he said. The antenna has been designed so 4/5G routers can be mounted inside. This design allows data

(router and infrastructure dependent) and a range of up to 100 Km (installation location and infrastructure dependent). There is the facility for routers to be housed inside the antenna with only ethernet and power cables required and a peak gain of 11dBi which is maximised by minimal cable loss as the cables are only 75cm long. In addition, the antenna provides polarisation in both horizontal and vertical -45 and +45 degrees and it is salt-spray protected, low pressure water jets protected and impact protected. The antenna weighs 45kg and measures 75cm x 65cm. 8 C A Clase will be on stand F31.
Among the products highlighted by Marine Components International at Seawork will be BSB’s range of A60 fire dampers. BSB Engineering Services is a UK-based manufacturer of control products for air, fire and smoke with the A60 range carrying all the major international certifications including approvals from the US Coast Guard (USGC) Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the European Marine Directive (MED). A60 fire dampers are available in either marine grade stainless or galvanised steel. HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
8 Eberspaecher’s Hydronic D4E heater is particularly popular in the inland waterways market
Heater can reduce output seamlessly Eberspaecher’s Hydronic D4E and D5E heaters are two of the company’s most up to date diesel fired water heaters. And says Tim Fleckney, director of UK distributor Espar, the heaters are particularly popular in the inland waterways market. “They are also used offshore in small vessels for heating and domestic hot water, and in larger vessels for heating domestic hot water,” said Tim. “When compared to the older, outgoing Hydronic D4WSC and D5WSC, the new heater’s capability to reduce its output seamlessly right down to a very low 1.3kW makes it ideal for heating domestic hot water only.” He added: “Although we could use the old heaters to do this, we had to wastefully dump a fair bit of heat as the lowest these went down to was 2.4kW.” The Hydronic Hydronic D4E is a 12-volt heater with an output of between 1,300 to 4,300 watts and an electrical power consumption with the water pump of 23 to 45 watts. The maximum fuel consumption is around half a litre an hour. The heater is suitable for boats around 19ft to 29ft. The Hydronic DSE is a 12 or 24-volt heater with a heat output of up to 5,000 watts and an electrical power consumption with the water pump of 50 watts maximum. It has a maximum fuel consumption of 0.59 litres per hour and is suitable for boats up to around 42ft.

POWER CONSUMPTION IS REDUCED With their ultra-low energy consumption, Frigomar’s air conditioning systems are becoming the new standard for boat builders and owners looking for higher performance and a reduced carbon footprint, says Advanced Yacht Systems MD, Rod Boreham. The low energy consumption means the systems can be run routinely off an inverter, changing the power supply to a boat needing air conditioning. “Reducing the power consumption of one of the thirstiest systems on a boat clearly makes good environmental sense,” explained Rod. “It also makes the boat builders life easier as it reduces the size of the power source needed to run it alongside other systems.” Among the boatbuilders using Frigomar systems is Ocean Shipyard that fits the

HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING Recoheat stove heat recovery is an energy efficient heat recovery system for a wood burning stove. The system increases the effective heat output of a stove and heat transfer around a home, resulting in less fuel being burnt and less CO2 production. “Modern stoves are efficient, producing more heat with less fuel but they can be made even more efficient,” explained Will Burrows of Recoheat. “Standard convectionbased heat circulation means the heat they produce is quite localised, particularly if the stove is set into a chimney breast or area where the flow of air across it is reduced.” Recoheat is a fluemounted heat recovery unit that uses a 37-watt air pump that pumps heat around a house. An element – based inside the flue - is heated by the flue gases as they pass up the chimney
NEW ADJUSTABLE FLUE SYSTEMS from the fire which in turn heats up the coil so when air is pumped through the unit, it is also heated – to around 500°C. “This makes it expand and accelerate so that it comes out as a hot jet of air above the stove which can be felt more than a metre away,” said Will. The latest product update from the company is the production of adjustable flue sections which will enable the system to replace a section of flue. The top can then be dropped down to give access to the heat exchange coil for cleaning and inspection. “The aim is to further simplify installation and maintenance, as well as improve the visual quality,” said Will.

Third generation heater launched Eberspaecher’s third generation Airtronic air heater is due to be available later this year. The Airtronic 3 will be available from 2 to 8kW with all the product variants incorporating Eberspaecher’s brushless motor as well as stepless heat output control and an optimised metering pump for quiet operation. The redesigned combustion chamber gives greater flexibility in installing the heater and the new heat exchanger has been developed to provide better flow ratios within the heater itself and therefore, higher efficiency. The modified positioning of the temperature sensor has further improved the temperature control. Sensor-controlled sequences make the startup phase more efficient than previous models. The Airtronic 3 heaters come with the electronic interfaces CAN (12/24V), LIN (12V), and S+ (12/24V) and an integrated barometric pressure sensor optimises consumption levels. Depending on requirements, the Airtronic 3 heaters have different control systems including EasyStart Pro which allows the pre-heater to be controlled using the permanently installed operating element. Digital control via Eberspaecher’s EasyStart Web is also available through a digital device. The heater can also be integrated into pre-existing systems via various interfaces. The exterior has also been re-designed.

NEW BATTERY-POWERED AIR CON A revolution in marine air conditioning has begun with the launch of battery-powered units that can run from direct current (DC) alone. A boat’s batteries provide DC energy to a variety of onboard devices like lights and electronics. Typically however, high power appliances like air conditioners often still require alternating current from shore power, or the constant use of a generator. Now a new system made by Mabru Power Systems is set to change all that. “We combine high energy efficiency equipment, like air conditioning, with smart ways to store power, like lithium batteries,” explained
Lexi Ossinger, president of American distributor BoatRx. “We also think very carefully about how that power is being generated, from solar, wind, or high output alternators. If tackled the right way, it enables air conditioning without the need for a generator, which is still a relatively recent development.
8 Mabru’s air conditioning units run on 12V DC power
“It avoids noise and emissions, makes the system much more plug and play to use and enables smaller boats with outboard power to fit air conditioning. We can even size the battery bank appropriately to run all night long, if required.”
The battery charger uses either shore power whilst at dock or engine power through an alternator whilst at sea. Li-ion batteries provide high density storage of this energy which is then used to power the 12V air conditioning unit. The system is especially well suited to smaller boats, both power and sail, which don’t already have a generator. Mabru’s 12V heat pump range comprises three models with cooling capacities ranging from 3,500 btu to 12,500 btu. Each has a 70/30 CuNi condenser and can run for up to four hours on a single 28 LBS, MPS 31 series lithium battery.

SUPERYACHT SECTOR FACES CHANGES AND CHALLENGES that are powered solely by diesel. And Oscar Romani at Benetti points out: “It is easier to be born ecoresponsible than become it. “Recycling a yacht will be a key to the future.”

Superyacht stakeholders should be ready to embrace green yachting and prepare for a world without diesel. According to the heads of the world’s largest superyacht builders reducing a yacht’s carbon footprint can be achieved in a number of ways. This could be as simple as replacing diesel with a bio-fuel, changing generators to better fit the vessel’s actual usage, switching to LED lighting or reducing air conditioning which uses a lot of energy. ”And while hydrogen fuel cells are seen as the ideal long-term alternative, although some consider the technology not mature enough, there exist intermediary solutions like methanol fuel cells,” says Jamie Edmiston, chief executive at Edmiston. “In addition, speed remains a major obstacle to decarbonising the luxury yacht sector. Well-designed yachts cruising at a decent speed of 12 knots are less polluting than
many modern superyachts whose power requirements are exponential, as fuel consumption gains a few knots.” “The question is also knowing how to design a yacht that will still be
usable in five or ten years’ time,” adds Farouk Nefz chief of marketing at Feadship. ”What will be the value of a yacht still running on diesel and no longer able to sail in certain very popular areas?”

Large scale renovation In 2021, 668 new superyachts are believed to have joined the ranks of an already large fleet, an increase of more than 3% on the 2020. But it’s an ageing fleet, with the average age of a superyacht now 23 years old. With age comes the opportunity for green renovation. Some yachts have already begun their green transformation incuding S/Y Juliet (43m) and Foftein (30m), which have both switched their engines to hybrid propulsion at the Royal Huisman shipyard in the Netherlands. Aside from propulsion, low energy eco-friendly systems can be retrofitted, for example non-discharge water treatment installations, the use of low impact products for careening, such as low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints or non-biocidal anti-fouling products. Efforts undertaken must continue if pollutants are to be reduced said Michel Buffat, head of aviation and yacht finance, Credit Suisse. It is also essential not to focus solely on new yachts as “deliveries represent only a small part of the total fleet and the emission reduction effect on the overall fleet is minimal. We must integrate the idea that it’s the masses that make a difference.” Industry players agree that action is needed now, a change that involves the whole supply chain in the sector, not just yacht construction.

Siderise (Special Products) has launched Aquafon, developed as a highperformance acoustic treatment for marine engine rooms and bulkheads. The product is designed to offer a moisture-resistant acoustic solution. It has been tested to reduce engine noise transmission into the main cabin and living spaces whilst meeting the requirements of the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) of the MCA Regulations for fire performance. “This helps to preserve the relaxing ambience and protect all on board from the effects of noise, which can induce stress, fatigue, and sleep deprivation,” said a Siderise spokesperson. “Modern yachts are designed to offer unrivalled luxury and power, however, these purposes can come into conflict when engine noise threatens to disrupt the experience of owners, guests and crew onboard.” The acoustic treatment is a flexible resin-bonded glass fibre quilt contained within an anti-dusting fleece. This has been ‘zig zag’ stitched, with an outer acoustic membrane with a surface weight of either 5kg/m2 or 10kg/m2 providing good weight to performance ratio with a reduced thickness. It has a protective reinforced aluminium foil outer layer that is Class ‘0’ rated for a professional finish resistant to oil or fuel ingress. The insulation layer is an efficient thermal insulation material, and the outer foil-faced barrier forms an effective vapour barrier. The product can also be used as an external lining sheet for ducts, pipes and tanks.

NEW ITALIAN FRIDGE RANGE Penguin Refrigeration has added Vitrifrigo’s new C511 Chromelock range to its books. Chromelock is the new series of refrigerators and freezers from the Italian refrigeration company Vitrifrigo. It has the same dimensions as the previous Airlock version, but the door has been redesigned, both from an aesthetic and a functional point of view. The new range is available in anti-fingerprint and anti-scratch matt black finish with soft touch effect,
or in glossy grey laminate with pearl effect. This series is available in a variety of different options - fridge-freezer, fridge only, with door or drawer opening, also with the option of an integral or remote refrigeration unit which can be installed up to 1.5m away. Chromelock’s new door is lighter and is totally built-in, with a side frame which is 42mm thick. It can be customised quickly and easily by using finishing panels with a thickness of 0.8 to 3mm. Chromelock’s new

Superyacht efficiency tool uptake grows Use of the Yacht Club De Monaco’s SEA Index emission rating system for superyachts is continuing to grow. “Our SEA Index community continues to increase,” said Natalie Quevert from Yacht Club de Monaco. “We are broadening our CO2 emissions awareness program internationally, transforming the SEA Index into a more and more accessible tool for all owners and captains wishing to assess the carbon intensity of motor yachts over 40m.” SEA Index can be used as a comparison tool when deciding about the purchase or charter of a yacht allowing clients to choose vessels which are more energy efficient and have less impact on the environment. The confidential rating can also help determine what action is needed going into a refit. Originally launched in 2020, SEA Index assesses the carbon intensity (CO2 emissions per gross tonne/per hour) of motor yachts over 40m based on the power of their engines and generators. It uses a formula derived from IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) but specifically adapted to superyachts. The index also measures the typical operating profile of a yacht - time cruising, manoeuvring and the time spent in berth or at anchor.
LIGHTWEIGHT COMPOSITE HARDTOPS Sunseeker’s hardtops have been getting the Hexcel surface technology treatment. Earlier in the year, Hexcel was chosen to supply highquality ready made parts for the Sunseeker 90 Ocean Luxury Yacht, since then use of the parts has been extended across half a dozen other models in the range. Hexcel HexPly XF surface technology is is primarily used on upper deck structures that have a painted final finish and Sunseeker has been using it as a lightweght composite hardtop for its yachts. ”Whilst Sunseeker lead the way for large scale XF components in the marine market, the technology has since been taken on by a number of other European yards,” Thomas James, marine business development manager, Hexcel, told Boating Business. The lightweight composite hardtop is
manufactured from a combination of HexPly XF and Hexcel HexPly SuperFIT semi-preg. It’s lighter in weight than versions made using resin-infusion processes and it de-molds with a pinhole-free surface that needs minimal preparation to be ready for paint. The result is reduced weight and a paint-ready finish with no need for a

cosmetic barrier coat. This gives Sunseeker more options for customising its colour to the individual needs of its clients. Neither the HexPly XF surface layer nor the following layers of HexPly SuperFIT require time-
consuming debulking steps, significantly reducing lay-up time. In fact, Sunseeker has reported an overall reduction in process time of around 30%, saving three days of manufacturing time per hardtop. The technology was originally developed for the wind industry to reduce the costs of blade finishing, with Hexcel delivering to a number of customers in that market. But it has also collaborated with HP Composites S.p.A to develop carbon fibre Class A body panels for the automotive industry. Hexcel HexPly XF surfacing technology is being extensively used by the Italian component producer to manufacture external body panels and other components for supercars such as Alfa Romeo’s new supersport sedans, the Giulia GTA and GTAm.
NEW SUPERYACHT COLLABORATION London-based design studio Vitruvius Yachts has revealed details of a new 52m custom superyacht collaboration. The superyacht – currently known as Vitruvius N10 - is to be built by the Genoa-based shipyard Tankoa Yachts. The studio is headed up by naval architect and yacht designer, Phillipe Briand, which is designing the yacht for a couple wanting to move into ownership following previous experiences of chartering. “As newcomers to yacht ownership, they had carried out extensive research on
designers and asked if we could support them in their mission,” said Phillipe. “We received an extensive brief four days later which did initially make us scratch our heads and ask: ‘How are we going to achieve all of their requirements for a 52m yacht and stay under 500GT? Since then, we have produced 15 versions and developed the project down to the very last centimetre to make it all fit perfectly, finalising the GA with FM Architettura (interior architecture and design studio).” Another challenge for the project was producing
a large sundeck with ample interior space, as well as ensuring that the yacht maintained stability. Phillipe added: “This is where naval architecture and exterior design must go hand in hand. As we plan the yacht’s design, we always think about its technical viability; the structure of the vessel and how it will be built by the shipyard.”
8 Vitruvius Yachts is designing a 52m custom superyacht
The yacht will have an overall length of 51.5m and will be powered by hybrid propulsion for a range of 4,000 nautical miles. Onboard accommodation will be provided for ten guests across six staterooms. There will also be 250+ sqm of terraces spread throughout the vessel.

acknowledges that the challenging aspects of business never come easy. “Knocking on the first door with a pole in my hand trying to re-educate professionals in male dominated industries was something of a challenge.” And she says wryly: “Fluttering eyelids didn’t always work, so I had to educate myself in their world and then develop, this just being the reality of innovation, manufacturing and sales.” And she acknowledges that she never set out to be in sales or even a business owner, so persistence and patience is something she has learnt over the years some orders have taken five years to come to fruition. To work and develop in any area of business she notes that you must: “Educate yourself, join the appropriate organisations and use their knowledge network, but above all else network, network and network some more, oh and have lots of persistence.” In terms of help with developing ideas and physical product Jo 8 The Reach and Rescue pole can be used to rescue people or objects from the water
acknowledges that she had a great deal of help from government business startup groups but also adds: “I also met a great guy, Andy Sims, who taught me a lot about the industry and made some introductions into the marine world through his Marine Manufacturing Showcase stand.” But she says the philosophy she follows is simple: ‘If you want it, you can do it’, though she is quick to add: “You do need a lot of dedication and hard work though. Don’t let opportunities slip and keep learning and educating yourself. Place yourself in the right environments and learn from the experts and respect their knowledge.” Outside of innovating Jo has been a voluntary water rescue technician and supports the water rescue charities around the UK.
8 Jo was awarded an MBE for safeguarding emergency service workers
She also became a mother at an older than average age – which she describes as her fulltime hobby. “This business opportunity has enabled me to travel the world have fun, make money, and meet amazing people who I still learn from, whilst also being a mother.” And Jo is determined she’s not going to slow down any time soon with plans to keep innovating and developing new products to complement the company’s range.

Promarine Finance has appointed Julie Crang to its senior management team. Julie joins the marine finance company after a 20-year career in marine sales. “Moving into marine finance has allowed me to stay in the industry I love, whilst setting me a challenge in a new, exciting direction,” she said. “I’m helping like-minded people get on the water by listening and understanding their individual situation. Financing a boat is a massive decision for most so offering a friendly, personal service is right up my street.” Stuart Austin, Promarine director added: “Business is growing due to a significant increase in interest in getting out on the water within the UK. It’s an exciting time to join us and Julie’s experience in the marine industry is sure to bring added value to both the Promarine team and its customers.” Baltic Safety Products has appointed Neil Harrison as head of business – commercial marine, for its professional range of lifejackets, buoyancy aids and flotation clothing. Neil will be based in Scotland and will work alongside Ian Clark, Baltic’s head of business who is based in Hamble and with the Baltic global sales team in Sweden. “Having worked and been active within the marine industry since leaving school, I am delighted to be joining such a wellknown and well-respected company as Baltic,” said Neil. “I am passionate about marine safety, and to have the opportunity to work with Baltic, a company recognised for their innovative, high-quality products and service excellence in this sector, for more than 45 years now, is something I am very proud to become a part of.” Ian added: “It’s great to have Neil on board here at Baltic. Fastmount was recently acquired by Auckland-based Nautical Group Holdings (NGH) and Gregg will be succeeded by newly appointed general manager Keith Pratt. “It has been an incredible journey to lead Fastmount to where it is today,” said Gregg. “It has been nothing but fun to grow the business alongside our distributors and customers over the past 18 years. “I’ve been working closely with Keith for the last six months to hand over the keys, and I’m confident that he and the NGH team have what it takes to bring Fastmount to the next level.” The company designs and manufactures hidden panel mounting for superyacht interiors and has 38 global distributors.

Craig has 15 years’ experience in the marine sector, most recently as divisional director of Rutherford Marine in Johannesburg, distributor of Mercury outboards and MerCruiser inboards. She joins the company from offshore energy support vessel operator Seacat Services, where she led the crew management team. During this time, she also served as interim president of Brunswick Boat Group. “Neha has an exceptional track record of delivering results that drive outstanding performance across the enterprise,” said Ryan Gwillim, Brunswick Corporation CFO. “As our company continues to grow, having one leader to oversee these three critical financial functions and partner with the subject-matter experts in these areas will strengthen our finance organisation and broaden Neha’s skills and responsibilities.” Brent joined Brunswick in 2002, holding a variety of internal audit, financial reporting, and controller roles as well as his most recent role, vice president of investor relations which he has held since 2020. “Brent has been an incredible asset to Brunswick for 20 years and this new role will allow him to round-out his already broad finance leadership skillset,” said Gwillim. “Brent will work very closely with the enterprise finance team, focusing his attention on helping Boat Group execute its robust growth strategy.” Ian Walker has joined the management team of North Sails.
