The pace quickens

There seems to be less talk about the benefits of embracing green technology and the opportunities they present and a move to actually installing and developing them

A lot has happened since the spring issue, the global community is upping the pace in terms of mass vaccination and it seems we are finally learning the best ways to live and work and perhaps even prosper, while living a new normal.

The same can be said of the ports industry, which over the last few months seems to have taken several leaps forward. Not least there seems to be less talk about the benefits of embracing green technology and the opportunities they present and a move to actually installing and developing them.

That at least has been the consensus coming from both the ESPO and IAPH conferences in which ports and the whole port ecosystem have talked about a brave new world.

The move towards the better utilisation of waterways and the regionalisation of cargo to save on time, cost and emissions continues.

This is largely due to the ports and logistics firms continuous improvement philosophy to create supply chain efficiencies. In this issue we look at one such example, the brand new waterways route set up by P&O Maritime Logistics and DP World at Turkey’s Yarımca port.

Alternative power is an issue we revisit in this issue.

This time we take a trip to San Diego where the next big item on the port’s “to-do” list is to double shore power.

The Shore Power Capital Improvement Project will be the latest project in the port’s clean air quest to break ground, setting precedent for future port redevelopment in San Diego and across California.

Doubling shore power will mean two cruise vessels calling at San Diego can plug in at the same time – a big deal for this type of alternative power which has traditionally been slow on the uptake because of cost.

Another important component of every issue of GreenPort is a focus on the latest green equipment available and this time we take a look at air pollution monitoring.

It’s an area which is moving quickly in line with the progress being made in digitalisation.

Monitoring devices now involve real-time data access and storage using the cloud which allows viewing, analysing and exporting the data collected by any device, offering detailed information and advanced processing.

High tech stuff.

The last few months have been fast paced but we can expect the second half of 2021 to be even quicker as the world works towards opening up more.

Ships will soon be able to bunker eco-friendly fuel at a New Zealand port. Ports of Auckland (POAL) subsidiary Seafuels and BP have reached an agreement to use Seafuels' bunker barge Awanuia to deliver MARPOLcompliant Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Marine Gas Oil (MGO) to ships in the Auckland port. This agreement will help ensure New Zealand is able to meet its international obligations under Annex VI of the MARPOL convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, by providing international and domestic vessels calling New Zealand with MARPOL compliant fuels.

New Zealand joined MARPOL in 1998 and is due to sign up to Annex VI from late 2021.

Electric tractors Electric tractors will help reduce the environmental footprint of a new Ivory Coast container terminal. Gaussin has secured a €9.9m contract with the Port of Abidjan's Côte d'Ivoire Terminal (CIT), jointly operated by Bolloré Ports and Maersk subsidiary APM Terminals, for 36 APM 75T HE electric tractors, 24 powerpacks and six charging stations.

Green hydrogen Green hydrogen energy is being pursued by an ambitious Australian port.

TasPorts has signed an option agreement with Australian Fortescue Future Industries regarding land and operating access for its proposed 250MW green hydrogen plant at the Port of Bell Bay in Tasmania.

Anthony Donald, chief executive officer of TasPorts, said: “The signing of this agreement supports the organisation’s commitment to work with proponents and customers to enable new and emerging industries."

Sweden's first inland shipping barge shuttle service is up and running to aid sustainable transport.

The container barge shuttle service started operations on inland waterways between Stockholm Norvik Port and the Port of Västerås on 1 June.

“We are highly in favour of inland waterway transport. This provides us with a unique opportunity for more efficient transport options in the Stockholm region, reduces congestion on our roads, and provides our shipping companies and cargo owners with additional possibilities,” explained Fredrik Lindstål, chair of the board of Ports of Stockholm.

Sweden AB (BTSA) is helping introduce the service to Sweden.

The cargo shuttle service is the first example in Sweden of what is known throughout the EU as the fifth mode of transportation, using smaller EU class vessels on inland waterways.

PORT-CENTRIC LOGISTICS Investment in port-centric logistics solutions that support sustainable supply chains is growing.

DP-World-owned P&O Ferrymasters has partnered with Genk Green Logistics to build a 10,000 square metre state-of-theart warehouse near Belgium's Port of Genk, further enhancing its panEuropean rail, road and warehousing network. The warehouse will be constructed on a carbon neutral site and designed to meet the 'excellent rating' of BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method).

The new facility - strategically located near the port which is in the heart of Flanders' industrial belt - is equipped with high end Warehouse Management Systems and will enable customers to increase efficiency, have better visibility of their goods and expand storage capacity in their end-toend supply chains.

The warehouse is ideally positioned to accommodate the

import and export of goods requiring storage for international deep-sea routes and to the United Kingdom via both the English Channel and North Sea. The site's multimodal transport links, which include access to the Albert Canal and direct barging to DP World's terminal at Antwerp, will facilitate existing customers' export of high-value industrial products to consumers throughout Europe and via onward connections to Russia, China and the US.

Shipowners can now benefit from green hull cleaning in South Korea. HullWiper Ltd has partnered with HullWiper Korea, based at the Korea Maritime and Ocean University in Busan, to offer environmentally sustainable and quick hull cleaning to vessels calling at the country's main ports.

“Extending the HullWiper family into Korea makes perfect sense,” said Simon Doran, HullWiper MD. “Korea has industry leading newbuild shipyards and is a major location for all types of shipping from RoRo to LNG.”

Super-sized trains Two UK deep water ports say they're the first in the country to handle super-size freight trains. The DP World ports at Southampton and London Gateway are now handling Freightliner's new 775 metre intermodal container trains helping cement the critical role of Britain's smart logistics hubs in the international supply chain. “The emphasis on rail across both ports takes 300,000 trucks off UK roads each year, bringing significant environmental benefits and we expect this number to continue to grow,” said Ernst Schulze, Chief Executive of DP World in the UK.

Zero-emission Zero-emission trucks at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are on the increase. A collaboration between Nikola Corporation and California port trucking company Total Transportation Services Inc. (TTSI) includes vehicle trials and a Letter of Intent (LOI) to order 100 Nikola Class 8 battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) semi-trucks.

100% CONTAINER TRACEABILITY The technology, deployed in partnership with Microsoft Consulting Services, will fuel the introduction of AI-based container smart tracking solutions that will ensure 100% traceability of all handled containers at the Khalifa Port terminal, as well as the potential to launch an autonomous vehicle system.

Real-time operational monitoring is making port calls more efficient.

The ports of Gävle and Rauma have been using a port activity app for sharing operational key timestamps among port call actors since November 2020, as part of the EfficientFlow project, co-financed by the EU. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is helping sustainably transform a Middle Eastern port.

Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) and Microsoft have partnered to enhance container tracking and autonomous shuttle capabilities at ADT's Khalifa Port Container Terminal (KPCT) through the deployment of Artificial Intelligence Services of Azure, Microsoft's Cloud.

Ahmed Al Mutawa, CEO of ADT, said: “By driving innovation through the implementation of Artificial Intelligence and automation, Abu Dhabi Terminals is committed to modernising our port environment, while also dramatically reducing our carbon footprint, and costs, as well as turnaround times for those accessing Khalifa Port.”

Pilots and VTS in the archipelagoes between Sweden and Finland have tried a solution that gives a much earlier heads-up for meetings in the narrow fairways. Pilots can adjust speed sooner and optimise the meeting points, choosing places where the fairway is relatively wide.

Torbjörn Henriksson, project manager, explained: “We have had a diving company doing major work in the harbor area.

They set the new Port Activity App to send automatic notifications 30 minutes before ship arrival, which gave them plenty of time to get divers out of the water before having ships maneuvering nearby. Our solution that was designed to improve efficiency has suddenly become a safety device as well.”

A Spanish port has installed a pioneering system of solar panels that can be walked and driven on.

Valenciaport has installed the panelling, which carry energy back to the grid, at the north dock of the Port of València and can be used both in pedestrian areas and in areas of occasional traffic.

"These types of sustainable innovative solutions are [the realisation] of Valenciaport's conviction to be a catalyst for driving initiatives that accelerate implementation,” said Federico Torres, head of ecological transition of the Port Authority of Valencia.

“In this case, it helps us to analyse the production capacity and the sites where it can be installed, such as the accesses to buildings or the new passenger terminal.”

8 The array will cut emissions by 5.7 tonnes of CO2 per year

The solar floor is 100% walkable with a design integrated that guarantees anti-slip, with regenerative properties and a greater resistance than concrete making it resistant to loads, impacts and scratches.

The array has an energy production equivalent to half the annual consumption of a threeperson household cutting emissions by 5.7 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The project, implemented by the start-up Solum, is part of the SuperLabPorts initiative and is cofinanced by the Valenciaport Foundation with the support of the PAV within the framework of the EIT Climate-KIC Accelerator Valenciaport is also making progress in the installation of solar roofs in Valencia and Gandia, the installation of a wind power plant and the electrification of the docks of the Port of València.

ELECTRIFICATION MOVES CLOSER Hydrogen and lithium-ion power may move ports closer to total electrification.

This is the message from Hyster Europe, as it prepares to update on its zero-emission container handler and reachstacker projects at the TOC Global Showcase.

Capacity Trucks to jointly develop electric, hydrogen, and automationready terminal tractors.

The collaboration brings together Capacity's terminal truck platform with Hyster's lift truck electric powertrain technology and hydrogen fuel cells. The Hyster solution in development has lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel cell power integral to the design, rather than as a retrofit option.

“Importantly, the opportunities for hydrogen fuel cells are a key factor in this development, as this is a particularly interesting area for ports and something we've been progressing since 2017,” said Mr Nieuwland.

LITHIUM-ION POWER Hyster continues to develop container handlers and reachstackers powered by lithium-ion batteries, either alone or combined with a fuel-cell range extender, as part of a several funded projects for end users in the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Valencia.

A new generation of energyefficient mobile harbour cranes are aiding sustainable port operations.

Konecranes' Generation 6 cranes are engineered for electric power and can also run on battery power, cutting fuel and maintenance costs and helping customers meet low-carbon targets. The cranes can service any type of vessel and any kind of cargo, in any location.

“These cranes represent the best of Konecranes in terms of technology and durability, and thus also strongly support our commitment to sustainability,” said Konecranes president and CEO, Rob Smith.

Hydrogen tractor A green powered tractor is testing the potential of hydrogen as a cleaner port fuel. The trial of the Terberg hydrogen-powered terminal tractor and mobile hydrogen filling station at PSA Antwerp's Europa Terminal is the terminal's latest trial of green technology.

The tractor will be deployed to move containers around the terminal for two weeks under the auspices of the Hydrolog project, a demonstrator set up by the Flanders Institute for Logistics (VIL).

Next generation RTG There's a next generation RTG on the block which promises highly productive and eco-efficient container handling. Kalmar's new generation rubber-tyred gantry crane (RTG) equips five models with a stronger, lighter and simpler modular design and more intelligent features. “We've implemented hundreds of improvements using the latest technologies based on feedback from our customers,” said Marko Rasinen, product manager, Kalmar.

FASTER WATERWAYS TRANSIT THROUGH RUSSIA A logistics firm is setting up a fast, green river-sea route connecting Central Asia directly with Turkey.

MULTIPLE ADVANTAGES The Turkey - Caspian line is being set up by P&O Maritime Logistics with the support of DP World Yarımca and several other DP World group companies, will provide regular container based shipping between these markets for the first time.

It will put P&O Maritime Logistics in a good position to facilitate even closer trade connections between Turkish businesses and the region through DP World Yarımca with direct shipping via the Russian river systems into Aktau and Turkmenbashi ports in the Caspian Sea. The new line utilising P&O Maritime Logistics' Multi Carrying Vessel (MCV) will mainly transport containerised products such as industrial machines, construction materials, textiles, cosmetics, white goods, and marble, while additionally offering a convenient service for breakbulk and project cargo.

It's expected that at least two more MCV type vessels will be outfitted and classed for container carriage for the new line's launch in the coming months.

And it's a win win arrangement for both logistics firm and terminal operator.

The service will make the terminal more attractive for existing customers and help to attract new ones.

“The new Turkey - Caspian line between Turkey and the Caspian Sea makes the movement of goods more streamlined and less costly,” said Kris Adams, CEO of DP World Yarımca.

“With our knowledge of the trade networks between these countries, we are aiming to support our customers to be more competitive in these markets” He added that with trade booming between these regions, the opening of a new sea route will undoubtedly be a boon to firms operating in these markets.

investment of US$550 million. It has been labelled as the first and only specialised port in the İzmit Gulf, catering to purposeoriented container transportation business and using the most cutting-edge technologies in its operations.

DP World Yarımca's advanced reporting portal provides customers with various services and data including container inquiry, berth and vessel program, vehicle appointment, storage calculation, verified gross mass and service requests.

Having recently added a number of leading LCL companies to its customer portfolio, the terminal offers a fast LCL cargo service from any Far Eastern port to İstanbul thanks to its 4,000 sqm indoor warehouse.

The terminal itself is equipped with super-post panamax quay cranes and environmentally friendly electrified rubber tyred gantry cranes (e-RTGs) used for yard handling activities.

BIOFUELS MOVE TOWARDS COMMERCIALITY Marine biofuel has proved its commercial viability during a bunkering trial in Singapore.

BIOFUEL CUTS CO2 EMISSIONS As part of the trial on 4 April, Oldendorff Carriers' 2020-built 81,290 deadweight tonne dry bulk carrier Kira Oldendorff was refuelled with “drop-in” advanced biofuel blended with conventional fossil fuels by the Marlin Tiga tug. The advanced biofuel, supplied by GoodFuels, reduces CO2 emissions by 8090% well-to-exhaust compared with HFO/VLSFO, and uses sustainable waste and residue streams as feedstock.

The key objectives of the biofuel bunkering trial included understanding the behaviour of the fuel including emissions, assessing engine and vessel operational performance during the trial, as well as exploring the technical and commercial merits and challenges of biofuels as a marine fuel. The trial will enable the development an informed strategy on the structural supply and use of biofuels to support BHP's key shipping routes.

Global resources company BHP, German shipping company Oldendorff Carriers, and advanced biofuels pioneer GoodFuels, with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have conducted the first marine biofuel trial involving an ocean-going vessel bunkered in Singapore.

Captain Daknashamoorthy Ganasen, MPA's senior director (Operations and Marine Services), said: “Singapore is committed to the environmental sustainability of the shipping industry. We welcome interested parties to cooperate on the research, development and piloting of clean marine fuels in reducing the impact of shipping on the environment.”

Kira Oldendorff, chartered to BHP, was chosen for the trial as appropriate modifications to the vessel were easily carried out to burn the biofuel blend efficiently. Monitoring instruments were installed to capture the trial data as accurately as possible.

Trialling cleaner biofuels

FIRST TRIAL OF ITS KIND “During the trial over approximately six months, Toyota Tsusho Petroleum will verify technical matters, such as the oxidation and storage stability of biofuels, and acquire knowledge by measuring ship emissions,” explained Toyota Tsusho. “If these initiatives lead to procurement and regular use of biofuel, which is expected to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, this will contribute to solving issues in the maritime transport industry toward decarbonization.”

This is the first time that biofuel has been

bunkered in Singapore and by a Japanese company, noted Toyota Tsusho. TTP will supply biofuel for ships derived from waste cooking oil and vegetable oil to bunker barges.

The trial will take place April-September 2021.

TTP is also supplying biofuel produced in Europe and sold by GoodFuels, a biofuel

producer in the Netherlands, for foreign ships at the Port of Singapore.

In October 2020, Toyota Tsusho began supplying LNG to ships using Ship-to-Ship bunkering for the first time in Japan and has worked on initiatives toward replacing ship fuels (heavy oil and light oil) with alternatives.

REGIONAL PORTS TO BENEFIT FROM SUPPLY EFFICIENCIES Short sea shipping and regional ports will benefit from improved supply chain efficiency

That is the view of the panel of shipping professionals that came together to debate the economic, political and environmental considerations affecting the sector at Coastlink LIVE. “Shipping is often beaten by a big stick, but the pandemic, Brexit and the recent example of the Suez ship blockage have served to remind the world of the significance of the global supply chain,” said Nick Lambert, co-founder and director of NLA International Ltd. BOUNCE BACK Alex Veitch from Logistics UK gave an overview on the trends seen in short sea shipping over the last year.

In all, he said, when it came to Brexit, there has been very little disruption to the sector due to a 'monumental effort' of the supply chain to get ready.

But challenges he said would come with the introduction of stricter border controls in January 2022.

Overall, he said, shipping and exports were bouncing back but we need to wait until later in the year to look at how the industry may have changed.

He pointed to how Ireland has moved to sailing to Europe directly rather than through the UK but said: “It's too early to say with clarity if there is any modal shift to these types of sailings.”

MODAL SHIFT? Alan Platt, CEO, John Good Group, said that the recent challenges have come with both positives and negatives.

In a negative sense, stock piling, administrative burden and the negative effect on the labour market post-Brexit have been very real challenges.

But in a positive sense, the industry has been forced to move from a “Just in time model to a just in case model” improving supply chain resilience and embracing technology and digitisation, which has improved efficiency greatly.

Both Brexit and the pandemic have led to move to more unaccompanied short sea freight cross-channel. There has been an increase in road freight prices which have benefitted the sector, as well as an uplift in container volumes.

It's a picture reiterated by Stephen Carr, group commercial director, Peel Ports, who talked about the growth in unaccompanied RoRo routes, plus new and existing LoLo routes and a growth in feeders.

THE FUTURE The biggest discussion point revolved around what's next for the sector and here regional ports should listen up.

The biggest take home was that regional ports could have plenty of opportunities borne out of Brext and the pandemic.

There was a general consensus that there will be a move to less congested ports and a switch to unaccompanied cargo over the next few years.

Smaller ports will need to find their niche and get ready to take advantage of opportunities that may come their way.

EU road freight costs and the subsequent uplift in SSS container volumes will help suppliers, transporters, operators and ports reduce their carbon footprints in future.

“Transporters want to move cargo as close as they can to their origin and destination and will use regional ports to minimise road freight,” says Mr Carr.

“The marketplace is now in favour of regional ports, this will make supply chains more efficient and help drive down emissions.”

Regional ports can look no further than to the big international players for tips on how to do this.

Justin Atkin, port rep for the UK and Ireland at the Port of Antwerp, said: “In Antwerp we have exceptional intermodal connectivity with the wider European market via short sea, barge and rail. All of these modes of transport will help reduce road miles and improve supply chain sustainability.”

FINAL WORD There was an overwhelming sense that the future is bright for both short sea shipping and regional ports, which traditionally have always struggled to carve their niche of the business away from the big players.

Perhaps there is a silver lining to come out of the struggles of the last few years after all.

MAKING THE EU FIT FOR 55 AND GREEN REVOLUTION On 14 July we will not only be commemorating the French Revolution, but also be bearing witness to a green revolution in Europe, writes Isabelle Ryckbost, secretary general, ESPO On this day, the Commission intends to launch a bunch of proposals to make Europe fit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% in 2030. Together with the goal to make Europe the first carbon neutral continent by 2050, the fit for 55-target is included in the European Climate Law, which turns the Green Deal ambitions of the Commission into EU law.

Many of the fit for 55-proposals will be affecting ports directly, or have indirect effects on the business of ports.

As part of the package, the Commission will present a new proposal, the so-called FuelEU Maritime, to stimulate the demand of clean fuels in shipping. The Commission will review - and strengthen the current Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Directive, in order to improve the availability of infrastructure for alternative fuels.

For ports, the proposals will tackle LNG and onshore power supply, review of the Energy Taxation Directive, including the taxation of both conventional marine fuels and renewables, will also be part of the fit for 55. We further expect a proposal for including the maritime sector in the EU Emission Trading System (ETS) and a proposal to introduce a carbon levy on imports of certain goods, including steel, cement and electricity, that come from countries that do not have equivalent climate regulations in place.

ESPO SUPPORT From the start, ESPO and its members have been supporting the Green Deal ambitions and have expressed the commitment of European ports to be partners in delivering the green transition. In that sense, we support efforts to increase the uptake and use of clean fuels and new technologies for shipping. For the same reason, ESPO supports a review of EU energy taxation in order to incentivise the use of clean fuels and considers it important to put a price on maritime carbon emissions through the EU ETS.

The different proposals must work together and should favour a pragmatic goal-based approach to greening the maritime sector Some elements are important to take into consideration to make these proposals work for ports. Such an approach would recognise that ports in Europe are very diverse and would avoid developing one size fits allproposals. Let me give the example of the onshore power provisions. While most ports are stepping up investments in onshore power, not all ports have access to the grid capacity needed (especially not renewable electricity) and some ports might have customers that favour the use of other solutions that are equivalent to OPS. The forthcoming proposals should

recognise these differences and grant stakeholders a certain degree of flexibility to allow them to develop their own pathway to greening.

At the same time, the competitiveness of Europe's ports should be safeguarded. In that respect, the ETS maritime proposal should find a solution to prevent the deviation of transhipment calls from certain EU ports to neighbouring countries in order to circumvent ETS. The same logic applies to the taxation of marine fuels, where introducing a tax on conventional fuels could jeopardise bunkering in European ports without any benefits in terms of emissions. We believe the new Directive should first rather encourage the deployment of alternative fuels through providing an EU-wide permanent tax exemption for OPS and other renewables.

Finally, ports can only become fit for 55 if the EU is ready to “fund for 55”. Many of the investments that will have to be made and facilitated by ports to green the shipping sector will have only a very slow and low return on investment for the port. The port authority is in this case not the polluter but is shouldering wider responsibility as a mission driven maritime stakeholder. It will therefore be important for ports to be able to rely on public funding and support to comply with the upcoming requirements for alternative fuel infrastructure in ports.

The fit for 55 package should provide ports with the tools to help deliver greening in the sector, where additional EU funding (including potential revenues from a maritime EU ETS) is needed for both the retrofitting and development of vessels and land-side investments in alternative fuels infrastructure.

One thing is clear: Getting all policymakers and stakeholders on the same page on these different issues won't be easy. We better get fit for a busy autumn.

Thanks to fast-moving advancements in reduced (or zero) emission technologies, San Diego and other ports do not have to choose between environmental quality and economic growth. With the right approach, maritime industries can be entirely compatible with cleaner air and a healthier environment for everyone who lives, works, and plays on and around San Diego Bay. The Port of San Diego has been investing in and deploying new technologies to improve overall air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the region in support of our communities, environment, and regional economy. At the direction of the Board of Port Commissioners, the port is now taking a more strategic approach to identify projects that will improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to transition to more efficient, modern, and sustainable maritime operations.

DOUBLING SHORE POWER The Shore Power Capital Improvement Project is a multimillion-dollar effort to expand existing power infrastructure in the Port of San Diego's electric shore power system, including the Broadway Pier and B Street terminals.

Doubling shore power at these two cruise terminals will mean two cruise vessels calling on San Diego can plug in at the same time. This will help to further improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions because the ships will not have to run their diesel auxiliary engines while in port.

San Diego port first installed shore power at the cruise terminals in 2010, making it among the first ports in California to have shore power available for cruise ships and beating by nearly four years a state regulation to reduce diesel particulate emissions from at least 50% of cruise calls. The shore power system currently only supports a single cruise vessel at a time. Planned expansion of shore power at the terminals will double existing capabilities, reducing the time and number of vessels that idly produce pollutants by up to 90%. Construction of these improvements is expected to begin later in 2021.

ALTERNATIVE POWER

SETTING STATE PRECEDENT The conversation surrounding greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in California dates back nearly twenty years. AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act, introduced the first benchmarks for emissions reduction in 2006. In the fifteen years since, regulations surrounding transportation emissions have only expanded. In August 2020, CARB updated the “atberth” regulations, requiring ports and vessels to reduce pollutants while docked by utilising a CARB-approved control measure or plugging directly into electric shore power.

While regulations are driving change in many areas, the Port of San Diego is proud to be an early adopter of increased shore power. The Port of San Diego's shore power expansion meets and exceeds these new regulatory standards and will be operational before the compliance deadline of 1 January 1 2023.

Early compliance and robust shore power facilities at B Street and Broadway Pier cruise terminals will also potentially introduce new business opportunities for the port area. While the cruise industry has been on hold pending compliance with

the Covid-related Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Framework for Conditional Sailing Order, the port is enthusiastic about the cruise lines returning in the fall.

The port's cruise sector has a tremendous economic impact on the region, growing from US$82 million to $131 million between 2014 and 2018, supporting everything from retail and hospitality to security and logistics. The completion of the shore power expansion will allow the port to support our cruise partners in an efficient, high volume and safe manner when the time comes. Every cruise ship that homeports in San Diego brings an estimated two million dollars to the local economy.

In addition to having the infrastructure available for nearly every cruise ship to run off electricity while in port, the port is also installing a solar-powered microgrid at its Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal, adding more public electric vehicle chargers on the bayfront, and more.

2022 AND BEYOND The Port of San Diego has plotted a sustainable course guided in partnership with the community. The completion of the shore power expansion project is just the beginning of a suite of electrification projects on the horizon including: 4 New shore power system with at least two shore power outlets by 2025 at the National City Marine Terminal, the port's automobile and lumber imports terminal; 4 An additional shore power outlet by 2031 to the existing two shore power outlets at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal, the port's bulk, breakbulk, and specialty cargo terminal; 4 More vehicle and cargo handling equipment electrification at our cargo and cruise terminals; 4 Additional public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along the bayfront; and 4 Infrastructure improvements including a 700KW solar photovoltaic system with storage and microgrid at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal.

CARB regulations that require essentially all cruise ships calling on California ports to use shore power beginning 1 January 1 2023. Having two shore power outlets at the cruise ship terminals will result in at least a 90 percent overall reduction of harmful pollutants such as NOx and Diesel Particulate Matter as well as a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Such remarkable projections beg the question: why didn't ports across California adapt their energy capabilities sooner?

The answer is likely tied to cost - electric energy infrastructure is expensive and, until state authorities signaled changes to regulatory standards late in 2019, there was little obvious interest outside of the Port of San Diego.

On the federal level, there are and have been grant opportunities, but to say they are very competitive is an understatement. So, despite revenue losses due to the pandemic and because it is essential that we move forward on this shore power expansion project now, we found the money within, making some budget moves to allocate US$4.1 million to the project and committing US$500,000 from our Low Carbon Fuel Standard Credits fund generated from our existing cruise shore power system.

With cruises being critical to San Diego's tourism economy, this is a good investment and is just one of the port's many clean air projects on the horizon. Planning, commitment, and action are the keys to the port's sustainability efforts, and we continue to be leaders in terms of innovative reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

SERIOUS ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY With increasing stakeholder expectations and regulations, we’re at a pivotal point in the debate around sustainability, writes Richard Hepworth, president, Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure Impending regulations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Greenhouse Gas Strategy 2050 continues to grow the conversation both in volume and reach, so do initiatives, such as the World Ports Sustainability Program and the Environmental Ship Index.

As the events of 2020 took hold, the shipping and maritime industries faced a shift in focus to short-term viability, before bouncing back from Q4 onwards. With that, came a boom in shipping, resulting in more ships, more delays and more congestion. Nonetheless sustainability goals continue to be placed under the spotlight to ensure they stay on track amidst the fluctuation. New research, carried out by Trelleborg's marine and infrastructure operation, mid-pandemic, reveals how the maritime sector is responding and provides insights and analysis into the way ahead.

THE VALUE OF SUSTAINABILITY It has become apparent that sustainability remains a key consideration for businesses. 82% of organisations surveyed in Trelleborg marine and infrastructure operation's recent 'Serious About Sustainability' Report, ranked sustainability as 'very important' to their business. When it came to setting performance targets, 37% of respondents cited using the United Nations Social Development Goals (UN SDG) to guide them. These focus on building resilient infrastructure, promoting sustainable industrialisation and fostering innovation.

Overall, there is a positive mindset within the industry and a recognition that sustainability is an opportunity. In fact, 76% of respondents have introduced new sustainability initiatives in the last three years, from developing sustainable products, to appointing a dedicated sustainability practice lead, for example. This marks a major industry shift and highlights a link between sustainability, operational efficiency and business success.

However, there is still progress to be made. The 24% of respondents who claimed not to have adopted any new sustainable approaches could find themselves at a disadvantage commercially if they fail to adapt. The calls for environmental and sustainability criteria to be incorporated into procurement and commercial processes are increasingly important and necessary, as evidenced by both the industry's actions and customers' expectations. According to the ESPO Environmental Report for 2020, seven out of ten European ports take climate change into account when developing new infrastructure projects. Through the development of durable infrastructure, sustainability goals can be supported more practically and fundamentally. Trelleborg's report found that sustainability is considered key to long-term value creation

Promoting sustainable infrastructure – both within the port environment and on-vessel – provides a number of benefits, such as increased port uptime

and reputation, as opposed to regulation, appears to be the major driving force for change. Of those surveyed, 81% prioritised sustainability as integral to the strategic approach of their business and 56% emphasized long-term value creation over short-term performance. This signifies that putting sustainability at the heart of operations is key to the success of those businesses. As a result, these corporations can more readily meet global challenges head-on and embrace opportunities for growth. Encouragingly, despite experiencing any of the global effects of COVID-19, 45% of respondents say they will press ahead and increase their focus on sustainability.

MARINE HEALTH MONITORING FIRST New Zealand's Napier Port has launched the first marine cultural health programme (MCHP) of its kind in the country - and possibly unique in the world, writes Dave MacIntyre Working in partnership with indigenous Māori to protect the local marine environment, the programme provides real-time monitoring of the state of health of the Ahuriri (Napier) marine environment and will lay the foundation for the future restoration and enhancement of this area, which is important to the mana whenua (people of the land) of Te Matau a Māui (Hawke's Bay).

The area contains taonga (places of cultural value), is the home of Pānia Reef (a site of cultural significance as the embodiment of the sea maiden Pānia) and Moremore Maitaitai Reserve. Pānia Reef is also an important site for gathering kaimoana (seafood).

The CMF monitors health by using two metrics. Mana Moana represents the health and wellbeing of the Ahuriri marine ecosystem, and Mana Tangata represents the strength of connection of mana whenua to the marine environment.

The health of each metric is measured through a “family tree” of key and sub indicators, and the health of each indicator is determined through qualitative and quantitative data which collectively assess the overall health of the Ahuriri area and its people. This data is available to the public in real-time on a marine cultural monitoring website.

Napier Port's environmental monitoring programme includes dive surveys, buoy data on water clarity, fishing surveys and marine mammal observations. Hawke's Bay Regional Council's coastal monitoring programmes adds inter-tidal reef monitoring, coastal water and recreational water quality, shellfish monitoring and sediment analysis.

HOLISTIC APPROACH What began as a community consultation in 2016 when planning for the new 6 Wharf evolved into a cultural impact assessment that recommended cultural monitoring of the Ahuriri marine area.

This led to the creation of a steering committee in 2019 consisting of representatives from 11 different marae (Māori tribal meeting places) and hapū (sub tribes), which has shaped the MCHP. At the heart of programme is a new Cultural Monitoring Framework (CMF), that balances Western science and a Māori worldview in order to provide a holistic representation of ecological and cultural health of the marine environment.

The MCHP is managed by Te Kaha Hawaikirangi, Napier Port's Pou Tikanga (cultural advisor) and Environmental Advisor.

He says designing the programme from scratch has been a big challenge, but working closely with mana whenua, marae and hapū has created a new innovative programme that speaks to the rich cultural traditions of Ahuriri, its people and environment.

“Our Cultural Monitoring Framework is also designed so other mana whenua or indigenous peoples can replicate the framework. It provides a means to measure and input information of importance in a way that provides an overall indicator of health.”

Michel de Vos, Napier Port's General Manager Infrastructure Services, says buy-in from local hapū was achieved by engaging from the beginning of the project and then throughout the process of forming the consent application and ultimately the application and hearing.

“With the cultural marine health monitoring right from the start we supported the idea and proposed it as a condition in our consent application. I think it is fair to say this is a New Zealand if not world's first and we did not really know what the end product might look like, so there was a big leap of faith on all sides," he says.

“I think everybody should be proud of the result."

Construction on 6 Wharf commenced at the start of 2020 and is due to be completed at the end of 2022.

MEASURING POLLUTION GETS HIGH-TECH Many technological solutions related to seaports have emerged in recent years and, in particular, many tools have been developed to measure pollution from maritime activity, writes Mikel Iceta, Kunak

MONITORING ADVANCES Enormous advances are emerging in this type of technological solutions for monitoring and measuring air quality, both indoors and outdoors and many products are being launched on the market.

These air quality devices are cheaper, easier to use and less bulky than traditional equipment and allow real-time monitoring of local air quality that can affect the health of citizens.

However, the data and measurements provided by many of these products are of questionable quality and the lack of accepted performance specifications for air sensors is leading to confusion among purchasers as they are unsure of the current accuracy of air sensors, how to operate them and assess whether they are fit for purpose.

This is why there is a need to establish standards and technical specifications and a methodology for analysing the performance of these types of sensors.

Air quality devices are not a direct substitute for existing analysers or reference networks, but are suitable for other applications such as complementing existing monitoring systems, for source identification and characterisation, for research, etc.

Kunak is actively involved in the development of the future EU Technical Specification (WG 42) on "Performance evaluation of air quality sensors".

We believe it is important to promote the development of this standardisation. In this way, any manufacturer of air quality

Air quality is a key factor in improving the management and image of a port. Maritime transport is "one of the most valuable assets" in almost any economy and its contribution to GDP is enormous, as well as the generation of direct and indirect jobs, as Martin Dorsman, Secretary General of the ECSA, pointed out in 2018.

One of the fastest growing activities is related to holiday cruises and, consequently, their environmental impact derived from the type of fuel used in the ships, whose main emissions are sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5 and PM10), in addition to those generated by ferries and freight transport.

In addition, noise and environmental pollution generated both by the ships themselves and by passengers or port activity (vehicle traffic, loading and unloading of goods, etc.) is particularly relevant.

Taking into account all of the above and seeking greater sustainability, green ports are emerging with force, which aim to minimise the environmental impact on the atmosphere, resources and marine biodiversity and the nearest inhabited areas.

To this end, a fundamental measure in the framework of these sustainable ports is the continuous and real-time atmospheric monitoring through the deployment of air quality meters, which allow port authorities to detect the presence of hot spots, establish early warnings of high pollution levels and adopt databased measures.

EQUIPMENT

A practical example of the benefits of this solution is the project that Kunak is carrying out in collaboration with Labaqua for the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) through the installation of 25 devices that monitor pollution and noise levels in five ports of the Balearic Islands (Palma, Alcúdia, Eivissa, La Savina and Maó).

NETWORK OF SENSORS Thanks to this network of sensors, it is possible to know the origins and magnitudes of pollutant and noise sources in order to study proposals that contribute to improving the quality of life of users and citizens through an early warning system and thus be able to take decisions in advance.

The objective of the APB is to analyse the data obtained by the sensors and provide an assessment of the qualitative correlation between port activity and environmental pollution, based on objective data and through scientific rigour.

In order to meet this objective, a solution for environmental monitoring of ports was developed with the following functionalities: 4 System for the generation of periodic reports with the sending of 1 daily report on the state of air quality in the study area.

4 Early detection of episodes of increased pollution and reduction of response time to 96%: by means of a system of alarms, alerts and statistics in real time.

4 Increased correlation of pollution episodes with maritime traffic and port management.

4 More than 1.5 million air quality data per month.

4 Improved perception of environmental performance.

4 100% compliance with the target on complaints or denunciations received for air pollution reasons (target 4; received 0).

4 100% compliance with the objective on complaints or denunciations for noise pollution (target 7, received 5).

4 Compliance with the objective of reducing the pressure of port operators' activities on air quality.

KUNAK AIR PRO Since we launched Kunak AIR Pro at the end of 2020 the reception has been tremendously positive and there have been many customers (current and new) who have shown great interest in knowing the product and implementing it in their projects in countries like Denmark, Guatemala, India, UK, Spain.

In addition, we are working for the coming months in different projects in other countries, so we are very happy and the growth expectations are very remarkable.

We have spent many months developing this product to be able to respond to the main needs of the market and of any air quality project, anticipating the future demands of customers, companies and administrations.

The response from customers could not have been more positive. A large majority have expressed their satisfaction with the ease of installation, the practical system of interchangeable cartridges, the integrated display that shows immediately if everything has been installed correctly, the careful design and the quick start-up and delivery of high-quality data without requiring prior calibration.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES At Kunak we are committed to the continuous improvement of our products and services.

Currently, we are working on a reduced and more compact version of Kunak AIR Pro focused on projects that do not require the measurement of so many pollutant gases, which we hope to have ready in the coming months.

On the other hand, we continue to work on the development of other products such as our Kunak Cloud platform, which is already in version v2.1.0, the improvement and update of the K101 datalogger and the upcoming launch of a new Gateway, in order to respond to the needs of our customers.

In 2020 Kunak obtained the certificate of registration in the Registry of Carbon Footprint, compensation and carbon dioxide absorption projects from MITECO (Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Government of Spain).

To this end, Kunak has calculated the company's carbon footprint and has created a plan to reduce emissions and protect the environment and mitigate climate change by implementing changes in consumption and responsible driving habits.

DECARBONISING PORTS USING GREEN PLANNING In this Q&A GreenPort talks to Richard Marsh, partner at law firm BDB Pitmans, about ports' routes to decarbonisation How was the decarbonisation exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic?

It is clear from speaking to port users and operators that A the past year has been extremely difficult; revenues have been significantly hit and, for many, there has had to be a primary focus on business survival.

So, it is understandable that company decarbonisation measures and plans may have taken a back seat, particularly where capital expenditure is involved. But notwithstanding the pandemic, there will be a strong push from the government to incentivise and require sector and corporate decarbonisation; in fact only last month the government confirmed that it will commit cutting carbon emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels, and will adopt the 6th carbon budget proposed by the Committee on Climate Change which, for the first time, will include international shipping and aviation emissions.

Provided that economies recovers well from the Covid pandemic, ports will hopefully come to the conclusion that expenditure on decarbonisation measures now will result in long term savings, as well as having considerable collateral benefits, such as strengthening public relations, contributing towards corporate social / ESG responsibility and assisting with employee relations, retention and attraction.

Each port's decarbonisation strategy will very much A depend on the size of its estate, the nature of its operations and the extent of 'free space' (including roof space) that can be used for infrastructure such as solar panels, wind turbines etc. Although not a legal consideration, it is absolutely vital for a port's decarbonisation strategy to be driven forward by a passionate and dynamic individual or team or, otherwise, to outsource part or all of the strategy creation / implementation to external consultants.

Jerry Clarke at Portsmouth Port is a perfect example of this necessary role. We, BDB Pitmans, are using an external environmental consultancy to help us to both measure our baseline carbon footprint and also devise decarbonisation strategies; a law firm is obviously very different to a port, but I believe that seeking at least initial strategy advice from external experts is an excellent use of money and time.

We are currently advising on a wide range of solar farms, hydrogen projects and pipeline developments; we understand the issues that crop up on both port and energy developments.

marquee measures or large capital projects; Jerry Clarke from Portsmouth Port explained the huge range of decarbonisation measures that he is responsible for developing and implementing, and several of the measures do not require significant capital expenditure 4 Even measures that one might think require significant upfront capital expenditure can be implemented with a range of financing options so as to spread the cost. This was demonstrated by the electrification options (private wire networks, smart grids and controls) being rolled out by Vattenfall Network Solutions.

Decarbonising ports means tackling market, regulatory, costs and electrification barriers 4 If we are to meet our 2050 Net Zero target all sectors of the economy, including ports, will need continued government support both in terms of a certain and joined up regulatory framework but also financial incentives to assist in the takeup of decarbonisation measures.

This is the view of the British Ports Association (BPA), which has stressed that ports are all very different in the UK with different levels of control over emissions.

Speaking at the recent BDB Pitmans 'Decarbonising Ports: The Route to Net Zero' webinar, Mark Simmonds, director of policy & external affairs at the BPA, said: “There is a level of uncertainty within ports about what the demand for zero-emission fuels might be.”

He explained it's difficult to talk about decarbonising ports, without talking about decarbonising ships. There are also barriers in the market for decarbonising highly specialised port equipment, where electrification hasn't necessarily progressed as much as much as the ports sector would like, or huge costs are involved.

“Where there are electric alternatives for much port equipment, there's huge costs involved, and the cost and more broadly the business case is usually a barrier.”

Productivity is key, the equipment needs to be as productive as diesel counterparts, Mr Simmonds stressed.

The BPA conclude measures to overcome barriers to emissions reduction includes a

green maritime fund, an energy system that supports maritime ambitions, a regulatory environment that provides certainty for lowcarbon investment, a clear technology-neutral indication of direction for industry, and international leadership at the IMO and other multilateral organisations.

TACKLING EMISSIONS Jerry Clarke, pilot and assistant harbour master at the council-owned Portsmouth International Port (PIP) explained the port ensures it undertaking carbon audits (using DEFRA guidance) because “you cannot manage what you do not measure”.

In 2018, PIP produced 50,000 tonnes of CO2 and 60,000 in 2019 with 844 more ships. PIP has installed air quality sensors utilising IOT to measure different polluting sources.

Mr Clarke matches environmental initiatives on the PIP's capital expenditure programme with available funding to give the port the best chance of getting to the implementation stage.

The port secured GB£500,000 funding from the EU Interreg fund to implement ecofeatures in the Linkspan 4 and another GB£500,000 for a seawater heat transfer pump which serves to heat and cool the cruise and ferry passenger terminal, which

also has seawater flushing toilets and air ducts on the roof utilising wind to cool the terminal.

It also secured £500,000 Innovate UK funding to work with Marine South East, Swanbarton and the Energy Catapult to install a dual fuel electric battery which uses machine learning and AI. “It uses port renewable energy and will control the distribution of energy around the port.”

In addition to installing a massive solar array, PIP has an Energy storage system in place and is looking into providing battery power for two ro-ro ferries for two hours alongside or a small cruise ship. He said that the use of split busbars on modern ships could facilitate the use of storage batteries for power in port.

PIP's Solent Freeport bid will see it aim to secure funding to undertake a study/audit into the possibility of using large Energy Storage Systems in conjunction with intelligent energy management systems and grid supply to provide shore power, without massive capital infrastructure projects.

New Brittany Ferries LNG ferries coming to the port in 2022/3 aim to plug-in to shore power.

BDB Pitmans was established in 2018 following a merger between legacy firms Bircham Dyson Bell (BDB) and Pitmans Law.

SMART TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS The Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) has been implementing, albeit with initial mixed results, a smart traffic planning and optimisation transport system, writes Shem Oirere The aim is to address truck congestion and traffic gridlock at its major ports in the hope it will improve efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

NPA, in partnership with Lagos-based Trucks Transit Parks Ltd, launched the truck electronic call up system as the ports' operator sought for “a permanent solution to the problem of truck congestion around Apapa and its environs.”

In addition to improving the movement of cargo to and from the ports of Nigeria, the e-truck call system will contribute substantially to reducing total carbon emissions from trucks and rubber tyred gantry cranes NPA had earlier converted the Lilypond Container Terminal into a holding bay for trucks to support the holding of trucks until they are called up to deliver or pick cargo at the port through the Eto app.

With the introduction of the new system all transporters, trucks owners and truck drivers will be required to download the Eto App before the commencement date to enable them register accordingly.

Cargo owners are required to return empty containers to the ports through the approved holding bays operated by shipping companies that must be using the Eto Platform.

The shipping company will then move empty containers from their holding bay to the port after making necessary bookings on the Eto platform to return empty containers to the port.

REDUCED EMISSIONS This new project, NPA says “will bring order and sanity to the ports access roads,” but it requires transporters, truck drivers, cargo owners, clearing agents shipping companies and all port users to work in cooperation with the port authority.

“Non-compliance to the use of Eto and its guidelines will result in denial of access into the ports, impounding of trucks and withdrawal of registration/operating license,” warns NPA

TRUCK MANAGEMENT Apapa, also called Lagos Port, is presently one of the biggest seaports in Nigeria with five private terminals operators including AP Moller Terminal Ltd, ENL Consortium Ltd, Apapa Bulk Terminal Ltd, Greenview Development Nigeria Ltd and Lilypond Inland Container Terminal, hence the high truck traffic and associated emissions that are also linked to high energy consumption.

NPA introduced the use of a mobile application, Eto, an electronic truck call-up system designed for easy management of how trucks come to and move out of ports and also access to the ports especially Apapa and Tincan ports.

The Eto application is "responsible for the scheduling, entry and exit of all trucks into the ports with effect from 27th February 2021”, according to Ibrahim S. Nasiru Assistant General Manager Corporate &Strategic Communications at NPA.

The high number of external cargo trucks entering the NPA owned ports is likely to surge in response to the growth of Nigeria's maritime industry.

In fact, in the first half of 2019 an estimated 4,420 ships called at the Nigerian ports including carriers for petroleum and gas, liquefied natural gas, dry bulk and container ships.

Moreover, Nigeria imports via the sea rose from US$44, 700 million in 2015 to US$55, 257 million in 2019, while exports served by Nigeria ports increased from US$50, 216 million in 2015 to US$62, 531 million in the same period - a key factor in the increasing deployment of cargo trucks at the NPA major ports.

Other measures, NPA has taken to address the traffic gridlock at its ports include partnering with the private sector to improve the road network leading to and from the ports.

For example, NPA has previously teamed up with Dangote and Flour Mills to upgrade the Wharf road that serves the port of Apapa.

Dangote and Flour Mills provided US$4.3 million for the rehabilitation of the roads to support endeavours to ease the traffic gridlock at Apapa port. Similar initiatives are planned for other Nigeria ports.

The Government of Malta is installing new shore power at Valletta Cruise Port to preserve the local environment and enhance the attractiveness of visiting cruise ships, writes Michele Witthaus

Valletta Cruise Port is the gateway to Malta's capital, welcoming more than half a million cruise passengers each year into a city that is often described as an open-air museum.

“The Grand Harbour is not just a passenger port: it is a multiuse destination,” says Stephen Xuereb, COO of Global Ports Holding and CEO of Valletta Cruise Port.

“The port is home to many residents, the workplace of many others and a place of relaxation for locals and tourists alike: There are age-old historical sites, walking promenades, entertainment zones, office buildings and even beaches in this strategic port,” says Mr Xuereb. “Thus, any activity within the port is a juggling game which requires careful planning and management.”

SLASHING EMISSIONS Impressive new shore power facilities will add to the existing drawcards of Valletta over the next few years, helping reduce cruise ship emissions in the port. Mr Xuereb explains: “This is a project spearheaded by Infrastructure Malta and the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Transport Malta and supported by Valletta Cruise Port with investment to the tune of €49.9 million. Valletta's Grand Harbour will be one of the European leaders in shore-supply provision for cruise ships.”

Work commenced in November 2020, and is ongoing on a number of quays around the port. The project will result in major air quality improvements with drastic reductions in emissions in the Grand Harbour. “This innovative system will make it possible to reduce the emissions of pollutant gases by over 40 tons a year, the equivalent of continuous circulation of over 4 million vehicles,” says Mr Xuereb. “Specifically, the port will be able to reduce SOx, NOx, CO2 and PM emissions.”

This project will ramp up the port's capacity to meet ambitious targets for reducing the port's carbon footprint. The carbon dioxide emissions reduction will have a positive impact

on the Grand Harbour's carbon footprint, helping Malta reach its greenhouse gases reduction targets.

It is estimated that Malta will save millions in costs linked to the measurable consequences of air pollution, such as savings on medical expenses related to respiratory illnesses and other related conditions, savings on air pollution mitigation measures to protect the natural environment, savings on infrastructure maintenance, including cleaning and restoration of building facades and improvements in agriculture.

Other welcome benefits include reductions in noise pollution and vibrations. “By switching off their engines during their stay in Malta and switching to shore power, ships will be able to cut most of their noise pollution and related vibrations, contributing to an enhanced quality of life in this area for residents, workers and visitors.”

It is estimated that Malta will save millions in costs linked to the measurable consequences of air pollution, such as savings on medical expenses related to respiratory illnesses and other related conditions As an added bonus, the shore power project will indirectly help in the conservation of historic buildings in the area.

“Millions of Euros are invested annually in the restoration of the numerous historical buildings and fortifications surrounding the Grand Harbour,” says Mr Xuereb. “This project is also contributing to the long-term conservation of these invaluable buildings.”

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE The cruise industry leaves a huge economic impact on the Maltese economy. In 2019, direct expenditure by the cruise industry locally amounted to €83.36 million of which €31 million was expenditure by cruise passengers and €52 million expenditure by cruise lines. Valletta Cruise Port, also through the Valletta Waterfront destination, is committed to carrying out its activities responsibly, with the aim of leaving a positive impact on the local community.”

This has been appreciated by both passengers and the cruise trade at large, culminating in over 900,000 passenger movements in 2019.”

Participation in certification systems for sustainability is an important part of the organisation's sustainability strategy.

Valletta Cruise Port is in the process of implementing an Environmental Risk Management System (ERMS). In addition, its environmental and conservation policy is in compliance with ISO 14001:2015, which Mr Xuereb describes as “a baseline requirement for almost all national and international 'green port' accreditations”.

Good relationships with stakeholders in the city and surrounding region are also critical to the success of Valletta Cruise Port's sustainability strategy. “The Malta Cruise Network Forum, comprised of key local stakeholders, meets on a frequent basis to plan forward, in the spirit of cooperation and responsiveness that is beneficial to all parties. The forum also aims to pre-empt any potential challenges and brings together the Tourism Ministry, Malta Tourism Authority, Valletta Cruise Port, Transport Malta, and the Malta Police, involving other parties directly as required.”

Looking to the future, ongoing projects like the shore-to-ship electricity project will help Malta in fulfilling international and European objectives, from MARPOL Annex VI, Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), Noise Emissions (WHO), Directive 2012/33/EU and Directive 2014/94/EU to the Blue Growth Strategy.

8 The Shore-to-Store project will assess the operational and technical feasibility of the hydrogen trucks in a heavy-duty setting

Ammonia will be explored as a clean shipping fuel with a new collaboration.

Commodity trading firm Trafigura Pte Ltd and Yara International ASA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development and promotion of the use of ammonia as a clean fuel in shipping and to explore possible opportunities to work together on green and blue ammonia fuel infrastructure and market opportunities.

“This agreement is another good example of cross-industry collaboration to develop and promote zero-emission fuel in the form of clean ammonia for the shipping industry,” said Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, President of

Yara Clean Ammonia. “Building clean ammonia value chains is critical to facilitate the transition to zero emission fuels by enabling the hydrogen economy - not least within trade and distribution where both Yara and Trafigura have leading capabilities. Demand and supply of clean ammonia need to be developed in tandem.”

Under the MoU, Trafigura and Yara intend to establish themselves in the ammonia value chain by collaborating in the supply of clean ammonia by Yara to Trafigura Group companies, exploring joint R&D initiatives for clean ammonia application as a marine fuel, and developing new clean ammonia assets including marine fuel infrastructure and market opportunities.

HYDROGEN TRUCK FEASIBILITY Under the S2S project, more than a dozen public and private sector partners have teamed up for a 12month demonstration of the zero-emissions Class 8 trucks, which can each travel 300 miles on one

charge of hydrogen. The project will be expanded to include five more hydrogen-fuelled heavy-duty trucks, two battery-electric yard tractors, and two battery-electric forklifts.

FUNDING The vehicles' duty cycles will consist of local pickup and delivery and drayage near the Port of Los Angeles and short regional haul applications in the Inland Empire.

The project is designed to assess the operational and technical feasibility of the vehicles in a heavyduty setting, as well as to expand infrastructure to support hydrogen throughout California.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is supporting the project with a grant of US$41.1m.

Project partners are contributing the remaining US$41.4m in financial and in-kind support.

Hydrogen-powered trucks will help California decarbonise.

The five new fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and two hydrogen fuelling stations have been launched as part of the US$82.5m Shore-to-Store (S2S) project by partners including the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Hueneme.

Port of Los Angeles executive director, Gene Seroka, said: “This project is a model for developing and commercializing the next generation of clean trucks and cargo-handling equipment for the region and beyond.”

Waterfront Shipping said it has been operating methanolfuelled ships for over five years.

Paul Hexter, president of Waterfront Shipping, added: “When appropriate safety measures are followed, we know that methanol is safe to ship, store, handle and bunker using procedures similar to

conventional fuels.” Mr Castelein said that the bunkering demo provided further evidence of methanol as a low emission, safe and simple to handle clean fuel that offers a pathway to a lowcarbon future. Methanol produces up to 15% lower carbon emissions during combustion than traditional fuel oil.
